The Lobby at Luskwood, the primary hangout for many

Luskwood, founded sometime in the end of 2003, was the first widely known furry gathering area on Second Life. It was forest-themed more than furry-themed but its founders (and most of their friends) were furry and so Luskwood became a refuge from both anti-furry sentiment and, primarily, the club/mall/casino craze that was beginning to make open spaces in SL a true rarity. Its forest/park/trees theme seems to be what inspired the later 'forest themed furry area' craze in SL. It is one of the oldest mainland theme builds still in existence.

Luskwood currently spans over 100,000 sqm in three mainland sims (Lusk, Perry, and Clara) and is a PG rated area. It is an open-build zone and is a good quiet place to get away from the craziness of some of the M-rated furry areas on SL.

Luskwood is perhaps most well known for its furry avatars which are some of the highest quality and most detailed in the game. Arito Cotton, one of its founders, was the first player to construct a furry avatar with primitives in the style that is currently common, and this led to the founding of Luskwood Creatures. In the long-ago-past they did custom work exclusively but as the furry population exploded they began selling vended avatars, with what appears to be great success.

The Luskwood founders are highly accessible and are usually available to talk about just about anything, and there don't seem to be any 'rules' outside of common courtesy. They occasionally hold parties DJed by Arito Cotton where they give away an obscene amount of in-game money for no reason at all. The amount given away seems to be directly proportionate to how drunk Arito is.

Overall, an interesting place from a historical perspective, as its founders were at least partially responsible for making furry 'happen' in SL.
