The Raccoon Gang
The Raccoon Gang is a semi-furry experimental music group from Dundee in Scotland. Originally a trio, the group's memebers consisted of Keeny Fox, under the alias of Mark "The Fox", along with Craig "The Adventurer" and John "The Colourless".
Mark is the only member that is a furry. The band occasionally has periods of hiatus, as Craig is not a serious poet and Mark is also a member of a more serious band, as well as his preoccupation with a solo project. John's last song with the band was in April 2007, and in November the same year it was officially announced he was no longer part of the group due to his constant attendance at Cambridge University. The group have decided to carry on as a duo as before until further notice.
They notably hold a friendly rivalry with fellow experimental band F#, who are a four-piece hardcore jazz band.
Style
Formed in the late summer of 2006, The Raccoon Gang play freestyle electro-pop fused with elements of rock and hip-hop. Amongst the band's unique traits is their spoken word style lyrics which are performed over the top of their songs. The band do not perform live, but have released videos onto YouTube.
The Raccoon Gang recorded their first three albums live and on the spot: the first was made on an old tape recorder and the following two on a Fostex multitrack. They have since produced more polished material with separate tracks. All their material cost practically nothing to make and produce since it was done quickly in the members' own time.
The group have so far recorded six albums and one compilation. Because of their deliberately extreme low-budget, they give away their music for free, no longer putting out CD's on a whim and instead allowing people to download their songs from the Internet.
Their track I'm Not A Freak (which appears on their third album) is a song which is about furries, but it is not a popular track with the members themselves. Ironically, the group seldom mentions furries in their songs.
Mascot
One of the band's leading features is their mascot, a cartoon raccoon named Robin. His appearances have changed over the early months. Originally drawn as a feral raccoon, Robin evolved into a more "Toony" look, wearing a green and orange sweater and dark brown jacket. Later on, he appeared to have reverted back into a more animal-like appearance, wearing a yellow bandana.
Mentioned in many of the band's songs, Robin also has a younger sister named Rebecca, who is first seen on the artwork of the Gang's fifth album. He also has an older brother called Ryan who was forced out by the family and adopted by an evil character. Not much is known about him (apart from being an anti-hero), and it is likely he will have a bigger role in a future album.
