LiveJournal Land, featuring the Furry Forest

LiveJournal is simple to use, yet very customizable and powerful personal blogging tool made using open-source software. It encompasses millions of users and offer a free sign-up option for basic journal features.

LiveJournal started as a hobby project, but when it hit a popularity boom the developers didn't expect, it turned into a business (though the administrators didn't want to call it one), and users were given the option of paying subscription fees for extra customizability and features which went into server maintenance, bandwidth costs, and accommodating the growing user base (many of them furries).

There is a list of furry LiveJournal communities.

Service Interruptions

This is a running tally of known issues that have occurred in the past or have just recently ocurred which do not relate to normal maintenance.

  • May 2 to the 3rd, 2006: At about 4PM PST, Six Apart (Livejournal's new parent company since January 2005) became the target of a Distributed Denial Of Service attack. The assault has affected all of Six Apart's domains and servers, resulting in intermittent accessibility and a network outage that lasted most of the day. It has been cleaned up and the site is again available. It was later revealed that the nature of the attack was not strictly directed at SixApart but at the anti-spam firm Blue Security which had a blog hosted by Six Apart's TypePad service. The traffic was directed to the TypePad blog which overloaded the system resulting in the aggrivation of the DDOS downtime.
