Chester Ringtail
Chester Magreer, aka Chester Ringtail, the famously flamboyant Ringtail (Cacomistle), is a character created by Terrie Smith and made popular in the furry comic Havoc Inc..
Chester is an extremely popular character in the fandom and has appeared on occasion in stand-alone works, as well as numerous pin-ups. Heyblibber and Whitepelt have fursuits based on Chester.
Chester's place in the fandom goes back to 1989, as seen in an early picture of him posed against a vanity mirror.
His story to date spans several publications, Midnight Sonata, Tales of the Tai Pan Universe, and Havoc inc.
Sadly, pieces of his story have been lost to time. At that time the internet was not prevelant enough to allow for preservation.
These are the highlights that survive.
His life began set against the sweeping backdrop of the intergalactic demon wars, which had been raging on for a long time, with no real ground gained. This war of attrition fostered a breeding ground for nefarious, cruel and immoral activity. During that period slavery and piracy were an ongoing threat.
Chester MaGreer was captured and taken into slavery when he was still very young. He would end up being used and mistreated as a sex slave, or catamite, by various underworld figures including Count Lukash Bakari the wolverine. This smuggler and criminal held the title of nobleman from the Brass Dominion planet. Count Bakari "owned" Chester for a period. During this time Chester, (known under aliases Bustafer or Carbonel) was subjected to various "conditioning" tortures.
Fortunately he was never physically mutilated, but he was neurologically tormented by procedures referred to as constraint neurotomy and amatoplasty. These helped ensure better compliance and passivity in slaves. The condition of slavery itself was given the cheerful titles of "vocational indenture" or "contractual welfare."
Another purpose of the procedures was to make the slaves more sexually malleable. This was explained in "Danger is His Middle Name", from Tales of the Tai Pan Universe issue #38.
Chester was repeatedly raped and abused during his time as a slave.
Far from being beat into submission and broken, brave Chester fought back and killed his "owners". The last people to put the ringtail in chains without his consent died for it.
Placed in jail, he managed to escape and take out a few guards in the process. Issue #11 of Tales of the TaiPan universe displays a wanted poster of Chester on the cover, bearing the designation "reward, dead or alive".
Chester MaGreer would go on to join and eventually command a pirate crew of his own. Enemies fell before him, and he showed no mercy to those who sought to participate in oppression or injustice.
The ringtail was good at evading capture and had a good run. Eventually he was captured, and sentenced to be executed. His beauty and charm carried no weight with his judges, nor did his tragic past. In a twist of luck, a previous love interest intervened on his behalf. This was a princess, who's father happened to be not only a powerful monarch, but also in the high command of the Allied Mammalian government.
Chester MaGreer's death sentence was commuted to compulsory military service in the AMF on a battleship. It was on this same vessel that Chester would meet Ural Christophe Deck, who became the ringtails boyfriend, closest companion and eventual business partner.
After witnessing the hopelessness of the war, with its seemingly pointless death and destruction, eventually the entire crew decided to go AWOL. Not long after this, an armistice was declared, meaning they were now free of any obligation anyway.
Chris and Chester, were deeply in love by now, each filling a deep need for the other. Although not nearly as traumatic as Chester's early years, Chris was no stranger to pain and loneliness.
Together they bought a large space ship of their own -The Half Moon- and began Havoc Inc shipping. The eponymous title of the comic series. Havoc Inc last released an issue in 2019, just prior to covid. In it the story arc concluded from issue #9, which dated from 2001.
Chester's sartorial influence is very much the 1980's, along with his classic sense of cool.
Chester presents as effeminate and flamboyant, one of the original femboys in the fandom. This image is somewhat deceiving. A military combat veteran in the Allied Mammalian Federation, he was also a mercenary and pirate. He will meet any threat with lethal force if the need arises.
Chester Ringtail should always hold a special place in the fandom, and not be forgotten. His determination and struggle against profound trauma and adversity to find happiness. His bravery fighting against oppression. His unbroken spirit. Chester MaGreer has a depth of character not seen very often in the fandom. More than a pretty face, this ringtail serves as an inspiration.
From the earliest days of the Fandom to now, there's never been anyone like Chester.
