The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) is a species of tri-colored canine that lives in Africa. It is also referred to as the African hunting dog, Cape hunting dog, African painted dog, painted dog, painted wolf, painted hunting dog, spotted dog, or ornate wolf. Their diet consists of meat and they also hunt large birds, especially ostriches. They can also hunt other animals, including antelopes, zebras, buffaloes and warthog and catch them by chasing them to exhaustion. Other predators, such as lions and hyenas, sometimes steal the prey that the wild dogs catch and the former of which can also kill them. African wild dogs have a unique blotchy coat pattern, have big round ears, and are also the only canid species to lack dewclaws. Like other species of canids, African wild dogs regurgitate food for their young and also live in packs.

The African wild dog is a fairly popular species on multiplayer worlds based on The Lion King, perhaps in part due to the species's striking and highly individual appearance.

African Wild dogs are endangered animals. Threats include poaching, diseases, habitat loss and competition with larger predators such as lions.
