In 1984, it was announced the mascot for the Centennial would be a sea otter.
The public was asked for suggestions with a “Name the Centennial Sea Otter Contest”. The winning entry was ‘Tillicum’, suggested by a Mr. Painter, who received a grand prize of a book about sea otters, an aquarium membership and a Walkman.
