Ten Thousand Miles Up is a short story set in the Hayven Celestia universe by author and artist Rick Griffin.

Plot[edit]

Captain Ateri, a Geroo (kangaroo-like alien) of the generation ship The White Flower II is assigned to scout out the dead planet C18-3 with the hopes of finding it suitable for terraforming.

The crew of a Ringel (raccoon/ringtail) pirate ship which had been tailing them throughout the journey contact him with an offer; to steal the terraformer from right under the noses of his Krakun (dragon) masters, an offer that could play into Ateri's own desires of freedom for himself and his crew. On the very same day, Ateri's old Krakun administrator is replaced by a new one, with orders to scuttle the terraformer at the first sign of theft.

Novelisation[edit]

Griffin has since adapted (at the encouragement of fellow author Gre7g Luterman to expand the story setting) the original short story into a three-part retelling entitled; The Final Days of the White Flower II. Part one; Traitors, Thieves and Liars and part two; The Captain's Oath have been published, with the latter winning the 2021 Ursa Major Award for Best Novel. The (as yet) unnamed third part is still in the midst of being written.
