Talk:YiffNet

From WikiFur, the furry encyclopedia.
Jump to: navigation, search

This page follows in the grand tradition of wildly inaccurate histories of YiffNet. I'm not sure there's a single correct detail. A partial list:

1. You've got the capitalization wrong. YiffNet, not Yiffnet. Just look at the logo you appropriated.

1a. As long as we're on capitalization, you've added a spurious one to Elkay.

2. Nothing "drove the regulars" to create their own network, certainly not script kiddies. Brian and I happened to be playing with IRC servers at the same time, and decided to connect them together on a lark. And if you think registration services had anything to do with the original YiffNet, you're out of your gourd.

3. The list of servers and when they were added has been pulled out of someone's ass. Anyone remember the Sun 3/280 in my dorm room?

4. Not only was I never "elected" to control the admission of new servers, nobody was elected to do anything at all, ever.

5. The network was not shut down due to arguments between the operators.

I recommend you nuke the page from orbit. It's the only way to be sure. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 65.172.228.254 (talkcontribs) 20:22, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

You are welcome to edit the page and make any corrections you feel are necessary yourself. That is the nature of Wiki*. As for the capitalization of the title, I just googled on "yiffnet" and found it capitalized both ways, but YiffNet seems to be somewhat more prevalent. Since renaming an article has to be done by an admin, I'll go ahead and take care of it. --mwalimu 20:41, 17 Oct 2005 (UTC)
As mwalimu says - it's wrong? So fix it! :-)
(oh and we didn't appropriate it - it's still where I found it for everyone else to use :-). --GreenReaper(talk) 01:58, 18 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Brian: YiffNet was a joint effort between Chris and I, I've still got the logs of the conversation where we linked the first two servers together after compiling the code. I'm not sure you've got the right date listed, I'd have to check those logs.

Addendum 27-May-2010: Whoever fixed it up did a better job than I would have. No further objections, Your Honor.

So, nobody's touched this page in nearly a year? Does anyone have it in their watch list? Does anyone care?

Personally, I miss the old #Furry and the people I used to know there. After seeing this rather bleak entry on the Wiki I thought I'd do a little work with it. I never mastered the encyclopedic style so feel free to cut the mush and sentiment where deemed necessary.

To address Elkay's objections:

1. Capitilization of "YiffNet" has been fixed, and the "appropriation" of the YiffNet logo falls under fair use.
1a. Capitilization of "Elkay" has likewise been fixed.
2. I found some stuff relating to the beginnings of YiffNet and I've presented it more as you've described.
3. No, I don't remember the Sun 3/280 sitting in your dorm room and I doubt many others do either. Feel free to tell us about it along with any other historical facts that would be of interest. As for the server history, I don't know where it came from but it's nowhere near accurate. Since it would be of little interest to the average reader even if it were accurate, I'll cut it from the article. I might be able to put a better one together later but no promises.
4. I don't recall anyone ever being elected to anything either. That wasn't your way of doing things. Consider it scratched.
5. Nobody seems to know why you shut down the network but there is a lot of speculation. I seem to recall Harik suggesting you did it to show the users that you were God because you ran the server. That doesn't sound like you at all but it damned sure sounds like Harik. Kyrn said in one of his web pages that you probably did it because you were tired of the headache. That sounds more like you.

I just finished adding what I intend to be a "lead" for the article. Four paragraphs that tell the overall story and give only the most important information about the subject. I didn't mention YiffNet's roots in EFNet as I plan to cover that in another section.

I've covered the points in Elkay's dispute above so I removed the dispute template. It can always be put back if Elkay isn't satisfied with the re-write, but frankly I'd be surprised if he even came here again.

The list of servers was nowhere near complete and grossly inaccurate. The link at the bottom pointed to pages that also had a lot of misinformation on them. I've removed both. As I mentioned earlier, a complete and accurate history of servers would be difficult to compile and of very little interest to anyone other than the server owners.

I talked to Aeto about using his real name in the article and he declined.

After talking to Simba of AnthroChat I decided to remove the referance to Harik and AnthroChat. AnthroChat was a split from FurNet and not from YiffNet.

Brian: I can't speak for Chris, but I certainly understood what the name YiffNet implied and had no problem with the using it for the network. There was an informal understanding that some activities be confined to invisible channels, and for the most part the users did just that, without the admins caring. Consenting adults, etc. We did try to keep #furry itself from becoming a public cesspool, up to and including banning people from using the network if they couldn't find it in themselves to behave. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 65.107.175.241 (talkcontribs) .
