Convention or party?[edit]

The question has been raised - should this be classified as a short convention or a long party? This year's event does last over two days - but it only ever occupies one area at a time. It has no evidence of dealership or defined accommodation, though Foxberance claims there is an "affiliated hotel". It does have events, but most revolve around fursuits or 2, both of which were part of last year's a party as they were last year. There are some other things listed as "activities" which are yet to be confirmed. At the same time, it is likely to be the largest event in the UK this year. What do you think? --GreenReaper(talk) 07:49, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

I say Convention because:[edit]

This is the current list of confirmed events during the two days with more to be confirmed closer to the event:

  • Meet and greet
  • Fursuit Commonwealth games.
  • Fursuit dance
  • Fursuit photo Shoot
  • Evening Boat Party
  • 2 Gryphon Performance
  • London Treasure hunt
  • Art Gallery
  • UKfur Awards

These events are operating in a number of locations. The main venue is split in to two main areas allowing for multiple events to run along side each other. RBW is proud to be hosted in the home of the commonwealth and a great city. We have a number of events that are planned outside so that visitors can explore and learn about London and the LondonFurs.

My second piece of evidence is this, As 50% owner for the RBW organization I KNOW what our convention is doing. The convention is currently in talks with The Mad Hatter Hotel to secure a discounted rate for attendees for RBW and using them as the 2007 affiliated hotel. Of course it is buisness sense not to disclose all detail and unconfirmed details which is why no official statement has yet to be made. Even though GreenReaper has put in dispute whether this is infact true, further evidence can be seen that the organizing team are working to secure this deal is found here: UKfur Forum discussion It is also prudent to note that this discussion was ongoing before this article was in dispute.

My third piece of evidence would be the current ticket sale figures. Out of the possible 150 tickets 131 have been sold as of 17th June 2007. With almost 6 months to go until the event this is already the biggest furry event the UK has ever had. The event for 2007 also includes a convention booklet outlining details surrounding RBW, our aims, stories and art, and interviews with our Guest of Honors.

Finlay my final piece of evidence is the definition of the word Convention Vs. The word Party

Wiki is about Fact not fiction

We are a convention. We have a small hotel, we do have 3 different simultaneous 'tracks' for people to take part in, 3 high status Guests of Honors, we have 2 _CONFIRMED_ vender's, and sold over 100 tickets for 2007 with a further 50 soon to be sold if current sale trends stick.

We have taken the same form of convention as successful UK Anime conventions in the UK by having affiliated hotels and not a specific residential hotel. This model works well in the UK due to the high price of prime London hotels, venues and other factors that make the traditional (but not the only) _FURRY_ conventional model possible.

As of the 20th July 2007 the website will be wholly updated to represent these facts and give more in-depth information regarding RBW, its guests, its vision towards the future, mascots, competitions, and how the company, increased staff, and event has changed over last 3 months from party to convention.

Why is it so important that we AREN'T a convention! I mean we aren't gonna start saying were the first because - that title belongs to Therians, whether or not it deserves the title as a convention is neither here nor there but i know spiritually to the fledgling UK fur scene at the time (of which i was one of them) it was the first. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Foxberance (talkcontribs) 00:31, 5 July 2007 (UTC).

My 2p's worth[edit]

Just to stick my oar in here, regardless of the dictionary definition of the word convention (just for the record, the Oxford English Dictionary defines it as "4. An assembly or gathering of persons for some common object; esp. a formal assembly met for deliberation or legislation on important matters, ecclesiastical, political, or social."), in the Furry community, it's generally taken to refer to a residential event.

There's also the small matter of the hotel in question not actually being able to accommodate everyone who attends as it's only got 30 rooms. Admittedly, not everyone will want to stay overnight, however.

At the end of the day, however, whatever you call it, RBW is clearly a success, and I look forward to seeing their plans for 2008's event once they've finalised things. --SouthPaw 08:08, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
