Fennix[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] is a fictional alien species created by Ketrai

Overview[edit]

Fennix are cowardly creatures, they try to avoid conflict, and will rarely engage in close combat. They have a high sense of self preservation. If given the chance they reproduce rapidly, parasitic breeding allows them to mate with almost any creature. Because of this form of breeding, a number of sub species and interesting mutations have emerged. Fennix are volatile creatures, they are even the cause of a disease, nicknamed "the infernal plague"

Habitat[edit]

The home planet of the Fennix species is called Gorgon Myriad IV. It is a desert planet, mainly consisting of savannah’s and sandy wastes. The surface contains a large number of oasis.

Biology[edit]

Fennix have 3 major kinds of bacteria contained within their body which are the cause for its abilities.

  • Digestion bacteria - The fennix has multiple bacteria some for helping the break down nutritional edibles, these bacteria are able to breakdown almost anything with a high nutritional value, like meat and plants, harder elements like wood/sand/stone or dirt will not be broken down by these bacteria.
  • Fuel bacteria - The second type of bacteria refines water and burnable substance, mostly carbon, into some kind of thin flammable liquid. It gets compressed and stored in a sack within the body.
  • Sludge bacteria - The last kind refines burnable matter into some kind of flammable sludge, also compressed and stored in a sac. When the sac doesn't get emptied for a while, its contents will be refined into a hard lump, alike to coal but harder and with a longer fire lifetime. The fennix will excrete this lump.

fennix have a reinforced throat, covered in a soft flexible coat which lowers the impact of sharp objects. This soft coat is a form of mucus, coating the walls of their intestines. In their throat they have an ignition mechanism, this gives them the ability to breathe fire or ignite the sludge whilst throwing it up. Fennix have a high body temperature.

The fennix also have biolumniscent bacteria living on their body, providing a mild glow.

Reproduction[3][edit]

The mating season for fennix lasts between one to two weeks. Fennix will go into a state of heat and only breed during this period, only rarely will they breed outside of this period unless in captivity. There are two ways for fennix to reproduce. Fennix produce both sperm and very small parasitic organisms which function like foetus. Male fennix can mate conventionally with female fennix, with pregnancy typically lasting around 20 days. A litter consists of 4-6 fennix, in rare cases where the litter only consists of one or two fennix, the pregancy will last around 55 days. Fennix only develop partially inside of the mother, then they will be brought to a corpse or carcass to carry out the rest of their development by living inside of the corpse. The developing fennix are capable of biting with their sharp teeth, which are similar to those of adult fennix, only more fragile. They typically spend 20 hours to two days inside of the corpse or carcass. When pregnancy lasts 55 days, they will not have to be placed inside of a corpse. This method of breeding accounts for 40% of all newborn fennix. Breeding with canine or vulpine and even female species via this method is possible, but only for male fennix mating with female creatures.

The second method of breeding involves male fennix breeding with other creatures. As long as they are in a state of trauma, or fear, and don’t really resist the mating process, and as long as they are not cold blooded they will qualify as suitable partners for reproduction. The male fennix will insert a parasitic foetus, which will typically reside in the stomach for around a week. They also adapt partial DNA string to a mucus covering their body in order to confuse the immune system of the host which allows them to not be seen as a threat to the host body. These parasites easily mutate, adopting genes and traits from their host. After a week they will leave the body by puncturing the stomach and biting a way trough skin and flesh to get out of the body, typically killing or injuring the host. Fennix cannot breed with other fennix in this way, due to the strong stomach acid of fennix caused by their different kinds of bacteria.

Most of the fennix are born out of parasitic scenarios, 60%. In this situation the ratio is 25% female, 75% male, rounding up for a male percentage of 45% in the total population. The genetic code for fennix goes as follows. Males have a genetic identifier of XX, the females have a genetic identifier of XY, with Y being the key identifier. as the young rudimentary pups gets inserted in their host, They will all have the 2 pairs of identifiers XX and XY this would normally result in half male and half female. However, when the genetic identifier Y of a female gets damaged, the X identifier will be chosen instead, resulting in a male being developed instead of a female. The environment for parasitic scenarios is volatile, genetic damage occurs frequently, and results in the X of the identifier being chosen more often than the Y indentifier.

An example of damage.

XX XY => (Xm Xm) (Xf Yf) => (Xm Xf) (Xm Yf)

Depending one the state of the 3 X'es 2 of the identifiers will be discarded.

XX or XY will remain, if the Y is damaged the X will be chosen, since the Y is the weakest of the identifiers, it is often damaged and will result in the XX being chosen.

Due to this method of breeding, the ratio of male/female is 70/30. Only 15% end up being females during conventional breeding and 25% end up being male. In parasitic breeding 45% ends up being male, and 15% ends up being female.

Physiology[2][edit]

The body of a fennix resembles that of a red fox. The tail of the fennix is big, consisting mostly of fur, and has a rounder shape. Fennix have a primary colour, commonly dark red. The secondary colour, which covers the underbelly and the tip of their tail is usually yellow, and houses the glowing bacteria. The teeth of fennix consist out of 2 parts, which function together. The first part is a hard core made out of crystallized bone, with the sharp edge of the teeth being only a few atoms thick. This core is covered in hyaline cartilage, a substance similar to bone. It is slightly elastic, when the fennix applies pressure to it for 4-5 seconds, it will move aside, exposing the hard core, allowing the fennix to bite with a force of 150.000 pounds per square inch, enough to bite trough titanium. Fennix body size commonly ranges from anywhere between fennec fox dimension and european red fox dimensions. The eye colour is commonly dark green.

Survival techniques [1][edit]

Fennix are a dominant species on Gorgon Myriad IV, they have an umber of techniques to survive.

  • ’’Bacteria’’ - Most predators will not attack fennix due to the dangerous bacteria in their body, they have become aware of the dangers trough trial and error. Fennix bacteria can infect organisms with the infernal plague, a deadly disease which causes their skin and flesh to be digested into sludge.
  • ’’Fire breathing’’ - Fennix can spit and ignite the fuel within their body, creating a torrent of flames mainly to scare of assailants, but it can be used to set them on fire as well.
  • ’’Sludge spitting’’ - Fennix can spit and choose to ignite the sludge within their body. If not ignited, it causes an acid like burn, as it eats trough the skin, infecting the target with the infernal plague. When ignited, it will stick to the skin and burn slowly but fiercely, causing big open burnt wounds.

Fennix typically live of corpses and carcasses in order to feed themselves.

Sub species[5][2][edit]

There are many different kinds of fennix due to mutations.

Snowflake Fennix[edit]

These fennix live in the Arctic and other colder places such as pine tree forests and birch forests. Their fur pattern is usually white as a primary colour, with blue for secondary areas, such as the glowing tip of their tail. Uncommonly the colours can be reversed as well. These fennix use their sludge to create small camp fires to keep warm. They use any wood they can find, pile it up, and ignite it. They also commonly stay in caves, keeping the cave warm. They prefer to eat moss to create more sludge. Their favourite kind of food is mushrooms, they will even ignore their sense of self preservation in order to find these on dangerous mountain ledges.

Pink Fennix[edit]

This is a very rare variant and not much is known about it.

Contagious Fennix[edit]

Their fur pattern is moss green as a primary colour, and lime as a secondary. These fennix appear from heavily diseased corpses due to parasitic reproduction. They have trouble breeding themselves. These fennix ooze sludge from their skin, they emit a putrid smell and spread all kinds of diseases. When there is too much sludge in their fur, they will shake to remove some of it, causing diseases to be spread more easily as they spread their sludge this way. These fennix will not breathe fire as there is a great risk of igniting their fur which is covered in flammable sludge.

Anthropomorphic Fennix[edit]

This sub species is rare, it is more known in the fictional universe within it exists than the other fennix species. They often die due development, and need specific circumstances in order to appear, such as parasitic reproduction trough anthropomorphic creatures or ape like creatures. They can carry out full pregnancies unlike other fennix without difficulty. They can learn easily due to an advanced humanoid level of intelligence.

Winged Fennix[edit]

These fennix appear from parasitic reproduction with winged hosts. This variant has only been reported once, and is not able to fly.

Armadillo Fennix[edit]

Also reported once, it is slower than most other variants, carrying a heavy shell on its back. It gets exhausted easily, has trouble finding food, mating, and surviving in the wild.

Wreck Rat Fennix[edit]

A variant encountered in and around spaceship wrecks. Through evolution they have become familiar with these wrecks and started to live of them, breaking them down slowly. They especially enjoy consuming the cargo of shipwrecks.

Night Stalker Fennix[edit]

This variant comes out at night, and lives in various cave systems. Their fur pattern is commonly black as a primary colour with yellow as a secondary colour, they also appear in the colours of the most common variant of fennix, dark red and yellow. They often have yellow or red eyes. These fennix only require 0,5 to 1,5 seconds in order to expose the sharp edge of their teeth. They will bite and mark prey in the dark with bioluminescent bacteria that emit a strong scent. This will attract other predators who will kill the marked prey, leaving a carcass for this variant to feed upon. These fennix often live in packs, the alpha has a mutation that causes them to have very sharp claws which they will use offensively. If another fennix gets born with this mutation, it will avoid revealing this until it is old enough to challenge the alpha and become the new alpha.

Giant Fennix[edit]

A giant fennix which originates from parasitic reproduction with one of the giant predators on Gorgon Myriad IV. Has only been recorded once.

Very Small Fennix[edit]

A very small fennix which originates from parasitic reproduction with a beetle. It has great difficulty to survive and is preyed upon by insects.

Snake Fennix[edit]

The only recorded case is that of a stillborn fennix, which originates from parasitic reproduction with a snake. The fennix was unable to successfully adopt the venomous capabilities of the snake, causing it to poison itself during development.

Folklore and Human Interaction[4][edit]

The natives of Gorgon Myriad IV believe that fennix are the children of their goddess, and that they protect them from evil and the darkness of the night. It is said that the goddess comes to visit her children every dawn.

The lumps excreted by fennix are often found and fashioned into jewellery.
