Miguel Estrugo (full Miguel Ángel Estrugo Hernández), also known as Artie Coon, previously Artie Roo (born October 15, 1972 in Cádiz, Spain[1], died May 28, 2011) in Santiago, Chile, was an European Spanish graphic designer and amateur webcomic creator living in Santiago de Chile, Chile.[2]

Art[edit]

Miguel Estrugo has been drawing webcomics on and off since 1996. His creations include Crock O'Dyle, Alice Otter, Road to Cuckooland and Ferret Wars. He loves drawing funny animals, and his favorite genre is humor, ranging from slice-of-life to slapstick.

His drawing style is strongly influenced by Spanish comic artists from the 60s and 70s, like José Sanchis Grau, Manuel Vázquez and Francisco Ibáñez, and early animators like the Fleischer brothers and Messmer/Sullivan.

Personas[edit]

  • Artie Roo - A short, cartoony kangaroo character created in 1986. He was his creator's personal character and avatar on furry sites and forums from 1995 to 2000, when he was replaced by Artie Coon. He was one of the main characters in Three Apples, a comic published in South Fur Lands between 1997 and 1998, and is now a secondary character in Alice Otter.
He's been featured in some pictures by his author, occasionally on satirical images related with furry fandom's darker aspects, but most of the drawings where he appears are submissions to the Artist's Ambush, that he occasionally visits on FurryMUCK.

Death[edit]

Miguel was prone to disappearing online, ranging from months to year long periods of inactivity. He often deleted work he had uploaded to furry art sites, and had several profiles under different names. As a result of his pattern of behavior, no one was particularly alarmed that he'd been inactive for many years, last posting on some art accounts in late 2010 and early 2011. It was not discovered until late March 2018, when this article was edited by a Wikifur reader, that Miguel had died almost seven years before. According to his memorial page[3], he had been suffering from depression, and was found dead in his apartment from an apparent suicide on May 28, 2011. The news of his death spread among the furry community[4], and his "m_estrugo" Fur Affinity account was marked as deceased soon after.[5]

Trivia[edit]

Miguel Estrugo was born the exact same day as US comic artist Cayetano "Cat" Garza. He was working at the World Trade Center in New York City at the time of the September 11 attacks. On the day of the attack he overslept, and saw the collapse of the towers from the train that was taking him to his destination.[6]
