Mel or Melfur is an obsolete term once used in the furry community for "male". The equivalent term for "female" was fem, which still has some popularity (e.g. "my fem character is a vixen").
The mel/fem terminology has its origins in science fiction, where it was introduced by the author David Brin in his Uplift Universe. It was further popularized within the early furry fandom by Elf Sternberg's Pendor stories.
This term could be applied as a prefix to a species. For example, on Pendor "melMephit" indicated a male skunk.
