Micah

M.C.A. Hogarth, also known as Micah or Poomah (full name Maggie C. A. Hogarth‎, née M. de Alarcon), is a female artist and writer who lives in Florida, USA.[1]

Fandom involvement[edit]

M.C.A. Hogarth was a guest of honor at Midwest FurFest in 2003, and again in 2009. She is a greymuzzle, with her earliest known work appearing in Yarf! #0 in 1989.

Micah also built TKI&I Clothiers and Jewelers, a room on FurryMuck with over 200 descriptions of clothing and jewelry. Her Basilica on that muck later became the source for the roleplaying Muck Genesis, which she administrated until 1996.

She has invented several fantasy species, the Jokka,[2] the Ai-Naidar, and the Le'enle.

Writing[edit]

Cover of Spots the Space Marine

Micah's short story In the Line of Duty was the winner of the 2003 Ursa Major Award for Best Anthropomorphic Short Fiction. Her short story 'Rosettes and Ribbons' appears in Sofawolf Press' Best in Show.

Additional short stories have appeared in Sofawolf Press's Anthrolations ('Butterfly' in #1, 'Dark Lighthouse' in #3 and 'The Blade to Your Hand' in #5). Other fiction also appeared in Yarf!, Pawprints, Morphic Tales and in general SF/F magazines Strange Horizons, The Leading Edge and Oceans of the Mind. Her stories about Alysha Forrest were collected and published as a book entitled Alysha's Fall by Cornwuff Press in 2000.

Her latest short fiction has been collected in two books, The Aphorisms of Kherishdar and The Admonishments of Kherishdar and concern a caste-based society of vaguely feline aliens, the Ai-Naidar. The first Jokka novel, The Worth of a Shell, was released in 2009. Her 2010 project is Spots the Space Marine, a serialized military SF novel. Her current releases and projects are detailed on her website's bibliography page.

"Space Marine" controversy[edit]

In mid-December, 2012, Games Workshop lodged a complaint with Amazon.com about Hogarth's novel Spots the Space Marine (a near-future military science fiction novel about real marines). Games Workshop indicated that the work infringed on their trademark of the words "space marine", and, as a result, Amazon blocked sales of the book.[3][4][5]

This led to an internet backlash from commentators such as Cory Doctorow[6] and the digital rights group, the Electronic Frontier Foundation,[7] who questioned the right of Games Workshop to trademark the term.[8] Subsequently, Spots the Space Marine reappeared on Amazon, and Games Workshop issued no further legal action.[9]
