The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) is a large, mostly plant-eating African mammal in the family Hippopotamidae whose name is Greek for "river horse". However, they are not horses nor pigs which is what they most closely resemble. Instead they are closely related to cetaceans, aka whales and dolphins. It is one of only two extant species, the other being the endangered pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis).
