Hengeyokai (変化妖怪, shapeshifting spirits) are a group of mythological Japanese creatures that include tanuki, kitsune, bakeneko, and nekomata.

Hengeyokai are also a playable race in Dungeons & Dragons that can shapeshift between human form, animal form, and anthropomorphic form.[1] They are sometimes mistaken for lycanthropes. Hengeyokai are divided into subraces according to what species their animal form is: carp, cat, crab, crane, dog, drake, fox, hare, monkey, tanuki, rat, or sparrow.[2]
