Plot[edit]

Fruits Basket follows the life of high-school student Tohru Honda. Following the death of her mother, Tohru lives in a tent in a nearby forest that is actually property of the Sohma family. When her tent and possessions are destroyed by a landslide, Tohru is taken in by the Sohma family, becoming their housekeeper in exchange for room and board. Tohru soon discovers the Sohma family's secret: the thirteen members of the family are possessed by the 12 animal spirits of the Chinese Zodiac, plus the spirit of the cat who was, according to legend, left out of the Zodiac. They are cursed to transform into animals when embraced by members of the opposite sex, or when under stress.

Part comedy-part drama, as the series progresses, Tohru learns of the hardships and hurts faced by the inflicted Sohmas, and through her own generous and loving nature, helps heal their emotional wounds. After living with the Sohma family she begins to like, then love, all of the Sohmas, and sets out to break the zodiac curse.

Characters[edit]

Tohru Honda, an orphan girl, is taken in by the Sohma family. Each member of the Sohma family transforms into a different Zodiac animal when they are hugged by someone of the opposite sex or when they are under extreme stress. While they are transformed, they can still talk like humans.
