Hey guys. So today I think I found myself to be a furry. I also found out that my sexuality is messed up. So.. I was wondering if WikiFur could help me out with a few questions.

1. I find so many anthrocons and what not. Is being a furry a fetish or how you live? I don't think wagging my tail in public is a good idea, but I'm rather confused as to whether if I'm a furry or not.

2. How many furries have a male on male orientation? Is most of the furry community straight?

3. Do I have to admit I'm a furry? Coming out of the closet as a furry is like telling everyone your fetish.

4. Did furries create hate for themselves? I have no idea why people are uncomfortable with furries. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ibsnooze (talkcontribs) .

1. For some it is a fetish, for others, a lifestyle, others, just a hobby.

2. According to a recent survey, most are straight. But there is also a stereotype that the majority is homosexual.

3. No.

4. Every fandom has hate. For some part, yes, we are to blane. Equivamp 13:42, 1 July 2011 (EDT)

1. Furries are fans of anthropomorphic animals. That means they like the idea of animals who can think like and perhaps look somewhat like humans. They may go to conventions set up to bring similar fans together, and share their interests, artwork, writing and costumes (about 20% of con attendees have the latter). It may also lead to them weaving a furry representation for themselves and using it as an online avatar, and because furries are people (often young people), it can lead to sexual artwork and roleplaying involving those characters. That doesn't mean it's a fetish per-se, but people get so wrapped up with it as part of their identity that they relate to others through it. If you think that you are an animal, or have an animal spirit, that's more therian.

2. See sexual orientation. Surveys vary, but it goes about bi, straight, gay in that order. There is also lots of polyamory and open relationships going on.

3. Don't see much point in making a big thing of it. Would you "come out" as a comic book fan, or a violin player? If you see it as mostly a fetish, then perhaps you might treat it like that, but it doesn't have to be. If you plan to go to a convention, you might want to tell people what it's about by showing them the panel listings.

4. Some people associate furry with bestiality. Some think it's weird. Others like to have someone to hate, and see furries as easy prey. Why do people make fun of geeks at school? They want to feel better than them. --GreenReaper(talk) 13:46, 1 July 2011 (EDT)

That's quite a few questions so I'll try to address at least some of them.
Furry is first and foremost a hobby based on an interest in anthropomorphic animals. For most it is not a sexual fetish, and doesn't even have to involve anything sexual or adult if those aspects of the fandom don't interest you, though clearly they do to varying degrees for many furry fans.
Many furries are only "out" to their fellow furry fans, while others have told their family, non-furry friends, and co-workers/classmates. It all depends on what you're comfortable with. Unfortunately, misconceptions about furry fandom abound among non-furries, and many would rather keep it low key than try to explain (and risk not being believed). As far as how much you want to incorporate it into your lifestyle, that too is a matter of personal preference and what you're comfortable with. There's no more reason to act out or advertise your interest in public than there would be for any other hobby or interest.
Furry fandom does have a noticeably higher incidence of LGBT than the general population, and they are much more likely to be 'out' to their fellow furry fans than is typical in most other settings. Still, there is no shortage of straight furries.
As with any group of people, there is a certain amount of disagreement, conflict, and drama within the furry community, some of it focused around the interest itself. There are also groups who like to troll and generally make fun of furries.
Note that WikiFur is not primarily a social networking site. There are plenty of better sites for that. Best of luck! --mwalimu 14:04, 1 July 2011 (EDT)
