The Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis), also known as the red jackal, Abyssinian wolf, Simien fox, and Simien jackal, is a species of canid. Ethiopian wolves resemble jackals and coyotes in appearance, in size and build, but are actually more closely related to the northern Gray wolf. They are considered the most endangered canid species and are found only in the mountains of Ethiopia which is located in Africa, in two small and distinct ranges.
Ethiopian wolves have a pack structure, usually consisting of more males than females. They hunt during the daytime, typically alone, with rodents as their main prey. They have been known to cooperatively hunt lambs and other small mammals.
The Ethiopian wolf is generally reddish-brown in color, with white counter-shading on muzzle, throat, and underside, and black markings.
Despite the severely limited geographic range of Ethiopian wolves in the wild, they are quite often played on The Lion King multiplayer worlds. Characters' social and pack behaviour tends to be assumed from analogy with the closely related, and far more familiar, wolf; this can extend to coloration, with individual roleplaying characters described as black or grey. White individuals are also played; The Lion King MUCK's Shekwon pack, for example, was led by a white female.
