The coyote (Canis latrans) is a species of canine native to North America.
The coyote means "barking dog", and a member of the Canidae family, and a relative of the domestic dog and wolf. Coyotes are only found in North America. Coyotes may occasionally assemble in small packs, but normally hunt alone.
Coyotes live an average of about 6 years in the wild. The word "coyote" derives from the Náhuatl (from the Aztec word cóyotl).
Coyotes and furry[edit]
The coyote seems to be a comparatively uncommon species in the fandom,[citation needed] constituting slightly more than 1% of the public personals on personals website Pounced.org (47 coyotes / 4467 total public personals on 2009 October 31).
However coyotes are one of the most popular phenotypes of furries, with coyotes tied for 21st place in WikiFur categories in 2007 November and at 19th place at Pounced.org in August 2006.[citation needed]
