ConFurence 2003 (or according to the old numbering scheme, ConFurence 14) was the final furry convention in the ConFurence series. It took place from April 25 - 27, 2003 at the Hilton Burbank Airport & Convention Center, Burbank, California, U.S.A.
- Theme: "The Furry West"
- Attendance: 470[1]
- Guests of Honor: Dark Natasha, Theresa Mather, Ruben Avila, Leslie Fish, and Roy D. Pounds II.
Events[edit]
Events included the ConFurence Filk Contest, the winners: for theme "Coyote Yodel", by Michael Payne; Audience Choice: "Wolfie Shorts", lyrics by Ian Martyn MooglePower.[2]
"Homesteading"[edit]
In a bid to cover the hotel room block, those staying at the con hotel were offered free memberships and some sponsor perks.[3]
Media coverage[edit]
There was an incident at ConFurence 2003 when the television crew from The Man Show showed up and began filming and trying to interview people. Disgruntled fans speculated that convention chairman Darrel Exline had "sold out" because the ConFurence Group had fallen short of its room block and owed the hotel thousands of dollars. However, Darrel Exline insisted that this was completely false.[4] Dr. Samuel "Uncle Kage" Conway of Anthrocon defended Exline in the unfortunate turn of events; it turned out that it was really the hotel that insisted on a location fee to be paid by The Man Show for the rights to film there. Incidentally, none of the money that was paid to the hotel was used to help settle the ConFurence Group's debt.[5][6] The footage filmed by The Man Show was never aired.
