One of the important aspects of Furry culture is species. Each Furry generally picks a species, or invents one, for their character. Species are chosen for a variety of reasons, ranging from a simple desire to be like that creature, to complex spiritual affinity.
Note that the term species is not necessarily being used here in the strict taxonomic sense. Some of the entries here pertain to a category of animal (e.g. canine, reptile), some refer to a single taxonomic species (e.g. tiger, giraffe), and some refer to animals often regarded as a single type of animal but which in fact encompass multiple species (e.g. fox, squirrel).
