The Best of Fur! Award is a defunct monthly award that was issued to "exceptional furry-owned websites" between November 1996-April 1997. The awards were hosted by AberDeen Foxx (sometimes referred to as 'Deen Foxx), owner of The Furry Side, a webpage that indexed large numbers of furry websites.

History[edit]

1996[edit]

The first mention of the Best of Fur! Award originates from a post on the furry Usenet newsgroup, alt.fan.furry dated November 13, 1996. In this post, AberDeen Foxx announces the winner of the November 1996 Best of Fur! Award, AP Entertainment Animation, the art and animation website of artist, Andrew Powell.[1]

The second Best of Fur! Award was given to Tanais the Fox's personal webpage on December 10, 1996. The site featured an Aboriginal Australian theme with a glyph-like kangaroo, fox, and didgeridoo on the homepage, and contained both stories and music written by Tanais himself.[2] Also listed on the page were resources pertaining to Shamanism and Totemism.

1997[edit]

1997 was the second, and ultimately final year that the Best of Fur! Awards were administered. What had been a steady monthly award schedule became irregular before disappearing altogether early into the year. The first Best of Fur! Award of 1997 was awarded to the webpage of AfterFox, AfterFox's Looking Glass on January 7, 1997.[3] The site contained various pieces of artwork by AfterFox in addition to a section describing how their 3D renderings were made and possibly a future RPG game that was in development.

After the January iteration of the Best of Fur! Award, no further awards would be given until April, with no reason behind the Awards' 3-month disappearance being provided. The fourth and final Best of Fur! Award was given to the official webpage for the then-unreleased Monolith Productions game, Captain Claw on April 17, 1997 with AberDeen stating that: "The great thing about this game is that the characters are all furry!"[4] Later in the announcement, AberDeen stated that The Furry Side would be moving to "its new company web-site. . .in about a month." However, after the April Best of Fur! Award, no more seem to have ever been given.
