I did precipitate a little in the Furry War. Take my advice and just sit there and look at them as they try to bother you. It will make them frustrated and they will give up in time.
I make my own fursuits. I have made a cat by the name of Onyx, a faun named Tully, and a merman by the name of Dylan Addison. I am working on XyLII the leopard. I also made a suit from a large inflatable toy, he is Airrex the inflatable T-rex.

XyLII: removed broken external link

Tommy and PJ is a webcomic created by Oren Otter and part of his Intense Universe. In the early stories of its current format, Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes was apparently a major influence.

More Information on Tommy and PJ in the author's own words may be found here.

The concept
The story takes place in the middle of the 21st century. Man has achieved the stars, made alliances with alien races, and begun colonizing other worlds. Tommio Tomias and his parents are of a plant-like humanoid species called vegetalien--ultimately descended from humans, but that is a long story for another article. They recently moved to the planet Procyon 4 to aid the colonization effort while Venus is being terraformed.

The strip actually began in a rough hand-drawn format whose story differed from the canon of the second format, which was created for the internet.

Tommy and PJ is a spinoff of "The Chronicles of Procyon", a series of stories by Oren Otter set in the Intense Universe. As of this writing, none of these stories have been publicly released. However, these stories, along with corresponding art, is set to be released on the internet in the near future.

The Characters
Tommy is the young, adventurous, and headstrong son of Xanthus and Daphne Tomias. He has a wild imagination and is prone to attempting wild stunts based on ideas as they pop into his mind, without thinking them through first.

PJ began life as a plush toy womprat who was Tommy's imaginary friend. He is a lot more level-headed than Tommy, but still willing to follow Tommy enthusiastically on his adventures. In short, he and Tommy are inseperable. As time went on, PJ's personality became so well-developed that he was "brought to life" in a story arc which introduced the self-aware robot characters Vocalizer and Magneta. This was, in fact, a throwback to PJ's character as introduced in the earlier format of the comic strip, mentioned above.

Zuni is a horse-like cavalier, the daughter of Tommy's next-door neighbors. She has a somewhat domineering personality and a rather short temper, but has nonetheless enjoyed Tommy's company since they met.

Paul was introduced as "the boy with bionic feet". Little is known about him, except that he has had the prosthetics for as long as he can remember (they were recently upgraded). Upon meeting Tommy, PJ, and Zuni, he became fast friends and has since joined the gang on nearly all of their exploits. He is a more sensitive character than Zuni, possibly owing to his physical difference.

Stories
Some of the most memorable storylines include the Christmas adventure, in which the kids try to deliver letters to their respective "Santas" (and discover the planet Procyon is serviced by a pangolin), and the recent storyline in which Tommy and Zuni's friendship is strained by a disagreement.

Recent developments
Since pencilling duties were taken up by Ashen Fox in September of 2004, Oren has been evolving the characters in a more mature direction, giving them new and different experiences as they actually grow older.

Ashen, in the course of his tenure as artist, has become sufficiently confident in his drawing skill that in October 2005 he decided to begin inking the strip by hand and coloring it digitally, returning the strip to full color.

OtterTunes is a Shoutcast radio network run by Oren Otter and his friends. It features a wide variety of material, including about 30% comedy, but also featuring electronic music, jazz, classical, oldies and more.

It is also the home of two "web-sonics", internet-based audio plays. These are Otter Island and TF&F Help Desk. OtterTunes is always on the lookout for other websonics to add to its lineup.

OtterTunes began as ROVR Radio - the in-house music system for OtterBooks.

OtterTunes was turned into a Shoutcast station in order to showcase the work of intependant musicians and comedians, expanding upon the mission of OtterComics to showcase to work of comic artists.

The station also serves as the online home of the Riverside Players, a group of voice actors who perform a number of shows, both furry and non-furry.

Deejays
OtterTunes employs a large number of interesting characters, both real and fictional, as deejays. These include a fair mix of human and furry.

* Sirajul: the hip hindi.
* Mujibur: Sirajul's pal who can't has a silly honking voice when he's wearing his retainer.
* Fuzzybutt: A squeaky little hamster who loves Jazz and hates mushy stuff.
* The Disgusting Twisted Imp: Host of the "Evil show", in which he plays songs about dismemberment, nazis and cross-dressing lumberjacks. All in good taste, of course. The imp may or may not be a rabbit in real life.
* Rashad the Excitable: A hyperactive black man whose mouth works faster than his brain.
* Doctor Mellow: Host of the Mellow Show whose hypnotic voice is most instrumental in sending listeners to slumberland.
* The Whale: Host of the whale song show. In some of the whale songs, his voice can be heard issuing a warning that if one listens to whale song too long, one might just become a whale.
* Zeppo the Rat: A pet rat who steals his owner's broadcasting equipment and broadcasts his own show filled with furry comedy songs.
* Chaos Otter: The slightly shy, stuttering otter who also appears in Journey to the Bottom of the Multiverse.
* DJ units 13.1 and 13.2: Two computers who battle for supremecy as they host the Tech Block.
* Cute Pink Bunny: A pink female bunny who hosts an hour of love songs and has a thing for Stinky Bob
* Stinky Bob: A opossum who hosts the Redneck Hour and has a crush on Cute Pink Bunny.
* Biff and Cliff: Two stupid jocks who host the comedy block.

Oren Otter (or Oren the Otter, a.k.a. Eric Vary) is a story writer and (mostly comic) artist, focusing on the topic of transformation. He is creator of The Changing Workplace, Oren's Monastery and Otter Island, among many others.

A prolific writer and cartoonist, Oren's first comic to appear online, The Changing Workplace, was based on people at TSA as well as references to The Blind Pig or SCABS storylines and of course Metamor Keep. His second major comic strip, Tommy and PJ (now drawn by Ashen Fox) was based on the highly complex Intense Universe, which includes concepts for some of his lesser-known projects, as well. In addition to a very hectic comic strip schedule, he now heads up a webcomic syndicate called Moonbase Comics, incliding Pandora Comics and is the proprietor of the Otterbooks Bookstore. He is also the operator of the webcomics emporium, and is currently the head artist of Intense Comics, a team of artists and operators who produce more than 20 comic titles including Room For One More, Magimals, Castle Horsetooth, Orwell's Gas Station and The Fluffles.

He also is a devout Christian, and uses Oren's Monastery as a kind of ministry outlet. In fact, this comic has given rise to the online church known as the Christian Furry Fellowship, of which Oren is now the pastor.

As a character, Oren plays two roles. In Otter Island, Oren is an otter who has been transformed into a human by an evil tree-spirit and led to believe that he has always been human. As his memory slowly filters back, Oren dreams of his life as an otter and creates a comic strip in which he is one. After three years, Oren is returned to the Island and his original body.

In The Changing Workplace and other comics, Oren is a human who has been turned into an otter and despite finding the change an improvement, finds adapting to life as an otter challenging.

Oren's relatives include his daughter Amanda, a plush toy who walks and talks and has her own series; his sister Felice who draws the comic Knight Shift; Nephew Xan the Armadillo; his furry godchildren Frost, Martin, CJ and Kyle; and Lee Vary, author of Orwell's Gas Station about life in a truck stop.

Along with the many comics on the Moonbase Comics site, is Orin's shoutcast radio station "OtterTunes".

Castle Horsetooth is a webcomic created by Oren Otter and Eala Dubh, the creative team behind the comic Room For One More. It was introduced in issue #1 of the webzine Anthro, in 2005, and as of 2007 is mirrored on its own site on the Moonbase comics webportal.

Background
The comic is a zany comedy featuring stylized characters, puns, and cultural references in the tradition of The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, the TV series from the 1960s. Oren gave a nod to Ward's work by naming the kingdom in which the primary characters live "Jaywardia."

Characters
To date, there are three principal characters and a number of supporting cast, as follows:

Fluren - A knight in shining armor. Handsome but not very well-built, enthusiastic but inexperienced and hopelessly naive.

Briarwood - Fluren's faithful steed. The more level-headed one of the pair. She also happens to be a funny animal and prefers to walk upright.

Morrison - A minstrel bat with enormous thick Penfold glasses and a propensity for speaking in Olde English thees and thous. In the tradition of winged funny-animal characters, his wing-claws double as makeshift fingers.

Cason and Yzma - A 'rival' knight and horse team. Cason is supremely arrogant in his superiority; Yzma, put bluntly, is a slut. Briarwood and Yzma cannot stand each other, Cason and Fluren would doubtless do likewise if Fluren wasn't so blissfully unaware.

The Duke - Fluren's 'boss' at Castle Horsetooth. Accompanied by his own retinue of courtiers, including Chuckles the jester (a manic mouse), Rufus the guard captain (a long-eared dog with prominent brows), Potts the cook (a rat with a thick Peter Falk voice), Chancellor Aldershot (an owl), and an unnamed court wizard presently turned into a mushroom.

Other inhabitants of the castle include:

Durins - an older, heavily moustached knight whose clear grasp on any given situation usually goes unreceived by the naive and innocent Fluren.

Redmane - Durins' horse, a personal friend of Briarwood.

Janric - an friendly, eager young knight with sleepy eyes.

Ivan - The overly-muscled strong-man of the knights.

Og the Frog - A frog who lives in the dungeon and brews tea from moat scum. Og is said to be descended from goblins.

Leolar - The leader of the blackbird choir.

Gribbich - The kindly moat monster.

Dragon - Yes, that's his name. He pretends to be fearsome and dark, but he's actually a softie who loves plush animals.

Story
Castle Horsetooth is a spinoff of Room For One More, occurring in the same location but many years in the past. Both comic series are set in the locale of what in the real world would be Fort Collins, Colorado. Many readers will recognize the familiar shape of the famous Mt. Horsetooth in the background of Room For One More. Castle Horsetooth, located near what would eventually become Frye's mansion, sits directly in front of the tooth-shaped summit.

In its first story, the comic is followed the old song "Sing a Song of Sixpence" detective-style, involving a put-upon baker and his nervous breakdown at the hands of a choir of songbirds.

The current story, as of this revision, follows a brand new interpretation of the song "Ring Around the Rosie", as a mysterious plague hits the castle in the middle of a gardening competition.

Magimals is a webcomic by Oren Otter, distributed by Pandora Comics, as well as a role-playing game.

The basic theme of Magimals began as a spoof on Battling Monsters games such as Pokémon and Digimon. in fact, the original idea was to be a comic depicting Oren's adventures as he played Pokemon. Nintendo, naturally, was not very receptive of the idea, so Oren, working with his nephew Xan the armadillo, created their own battling monsters system, calling it "Magimals" for "iMAGInary aniMALS". The main character was named Taji Sato in honor of Pokémon's creator, Satoshi Tajiri.

The game and comic became so much fun that they soon became a serious system in their own right.

The Background
Magimals is set in a reality similar to that of Otter Island or Journey to the Bottom of the Multiverse. In it, the multiverse is divided into several parallel universes.

The story starts millenia ago, when powerful creatures called titans roamed the multiverse freely. Innocent at first, their territotial battles soon began to decimate entire worlds. This was a major annoyance to the faeries who were beginning their exploration of the multiverse. In response, Oberon, King of the Faeries had the titans rounded up and locked away in different dimensions in groups of twenty.

In one particular universe, the titans settled in out of necessity, and the world around them was soon permeated with the ambient energies which their cosmically charged bodies released. Many years later, humans arrived in this dimension and colonized it. The animals quickly began to mutate, aligning with the elemental energies of the titans. Plants often did the same, becoming animate beings. even rocks, artificial objects and pieces of trash began to eveolve into life forms.

Since then, the world has divided into four nations: Wunno, Tyuwo, Threen and the Foro Islands. Each has approximately 200 varieties of magimal, including 100 unique species, for a total of 500 different kinds.

Each magimal conforms to one of twenty different elemental types, these being earth, fire, air, water, metal, sonic, lightning, wood, chemical, crystal, dream, space, ancient, fairy, brute, plain, yin, yang, junk and plastic.

The Games
The magimals RPG consists of five modules, the first four based on the four nations and the fifth a secret yet to be released.* The card game allows players to battle one another using magimal cards they have collected, as well as special items, foods, techniques and characters from the comic.

*At the time this article is being written, the RPG modules 1-4 are not yet available to the public.

The Comic
Magimals season one follows Taji Sato and his faithful companion, Dolby the Tweeter as they travel around the land of Wunno attempting to collect research specemins for zoologist Ephraim Sycamore. During his travels, Taji faces off against the occultic group known as Team Gerbil, as well as more pleasant characters such as Helga the groomer, Harv the treasure Hunter, Fleas the species dysphoric and Jinki, who claims to be from a parallel dimension.

Otter Island is a story world created by Oren Otter. Although it includes stories and art by other contributors, its main expression is through a combination of images and comic strips presented by Pandora Comics.

The Pre-history
The story of Otter Island begins with Oberon, King of the faeries. When the king became possessed of a wanderlust and desired to explore the multiverse, he had his people construct a system of interdimensional gateways powered by the magic which flows from the higher dimensions. When Oberon came to our dimension, he found it uninteresting and continued on his way.

Oberon's gate continued to function long after his departure and the the magic which powered the gate soon suffused the island on which it had been placed. This island became a sort of mecca for all manner of wizards and sorcerers. At one point, the entire magical community set off on an expedition through the gate. They were never heard from again.

Many years passed and the island which had been suffused with magic was now saturated with it. This magic caused it to become a living entity. However, it also caused the mutation of eels living in the reef. The eels became were-eels and using their human forms, conquered the island. These creatures, the nageels, were savage and cruel. Filled with an intense loathing, the island used all of its energies to drive them back into the sea.

Then one day, a river otter who had become lost at sea washed ashore, barely clinging to life. The island took pity on the creature and nursed it back to health. That otter became a fast friend of the island, and was such a delight that the island began to call telepathically to other otters.

Otter Island, which has come to strongly resemble an otter itself, is home to many species of otter, including kushtaka, microlont, star otter and cookiesnitcher.

Enemies
On another plane of the multiverse lives a tree spirit named Nexicul. Once a harmless oaksidhe, Nexicul's tree became so large, its roots so deep, that it began to soak up the very energies of the biosphere. Soon it had subsumed the entire world and the inhabitants thereof had become zombies- puppets controlled by the creature who had absorbed their life force.

Nexicul has since gone on to spread himself through the multiverse. His interest in Otter Island is simple. It lies between him and a world now devoid of magic, which offers him ideal laboratory conditions in which to test new magics and thus expand his power even more.

Other emeries include the marauding astruchin, the voracious tetranids and the greedy spiders from the low dimensions.

In response to these threats, Otter Island has joined an multi-dimensional alliance which includes a federation of elves, a world of androids, Rat City, Insectivore City and even a sentient restaurant.

Life on the Island
Otters who live on the island benefit in many ways. First, the ambient magic increases their intelligence, giving them the means to greatly enhance their own quality of life. It also allows them to instantly understand any language they see or hear.

Otters native to the island have their own language. This language is real and is reccomended for study by anyone wishing to build foreign language skill, as it is very simple, yet helps one to understand the mindset of a totally foreign people. (The Transformation Studies institute will soon be offering a course in Islandish.)

Otter Island is ruled by a king and queen who actually have very little to do with running things. The king deals with the outside world, making alliances and trade agreements, and serves as a military leader in wartime. The queen is in charge of the coastal patrol (a standing army consisting of one champion from each village) and insures that everyone has a means of contributing to society.

The economy of Otter Island can be described as an ideal communist society. There is no money. Everyone contributes to society in his or her own way and in exchange is permitted free access to all the goods and services which others offer. While this plan has always been disastrous in human societies, the non-materialistic nature of otters at their willingness to respect others' freedom makes it work.

There are ten villages on the island, each with unique characteristics and surrounding lands. They are the Kushtaka Village with it's hills of ice, Chanel Village with the sandbar and forest, Fjord Village, with its cliffs and orchards, Marsh Village with its swamp, River village with its meadows and markets, Reef Village with its islands, Lagoon Village on the shore of the shallow lagoon, Lake Village with lake and castle, Fish Farm Village with its gardens and sports arena, And lastly, the Star Otter Aerie atop Mt. Sploosh.

Fun places to visit on the island include Mt. Sploosh, a natural indoor water park; the Hot springs, the art museum, the Maxwell Memorial, and of course, Oberon's Gate.

Prominent characters
Among the most prominent characters on Otter Island are...

* Oren - the magician of transformation. He has no actual powers, but has made a thorough study of TF magic. Amanda the plushie lives here with her father, as does his apprentice, Frost.
* Sam - The conjurer. Born a human with the magical talent of conjuring, Sam experimented with other types of magic. In a spectacular blunder, Sam permanently turned himself into Oren's nearly identical twin. He is now married to a sea cat and has an adopted son named poof-poof.
* Tak - the jovial fruit farmer. Tak loves fruit and could easily eat as much as he grown.
* Blalok - The teacher, and best friend of Tak.
* Sayna - The athlete. Often seen hanging around with Tak and Blalok, she is the most physical of the bunch.
* Zarro - Formerly a gardener, Zarro is now ambassador to at large.
* Fgori - An alien of the kendru species, Fgori was unique among her people in that she actually likes otters. Now she lives among them.
* Alinor - Kept for years as Fgori's pet until she discovered that he was actually a sentient person. Alinor is a navigator, but as a microlont, stands about three inches (76 mm) tall.
* Cafe - The sentient restaurant. Cafe communicates by exchanging bits of matter which carry thoughts with them. He sometimes accompanies otters on their excursions by placing his personality into a bag of lozenges which interact with the otters by creating a mental projection.
* Jarna - a young female river wolf who likes to sing... but doesn't do so very well.
* Kahuna - a sea otter who doesn't quite understand the inhibitions river otters have concerning sex.
* Pan - The aged ambassador to Cafe.

Radio show
Otter Island has expanded into audio territory via a monthly internet program, the Otter Island Radio Show, produced by the amateur dramatics group, the Riverside Players, with theme music by Chama C. Fox as of Episode 4: Aftershocks. Seven episodes have so far been produced, ranging in duration from 25 to 40 minutes.
I prefer the feline and "aquatic" species but I like almost anything furry. While XyLII is my main fursona, I could not stop at just one. As Dylan Addison, am an administrator on Seatails, a forum about and for mermaids and mermen.
I did precipitate a little in the Furry War. Take my advice and just sit there and look at them as they try to bother you. It will make them frustrated and they will give up in time.

I make my own fursuits. I have made an ipotane named Methodios, and a merman by the name of Dylan Addison. I am working on XyLII the leopard.
Mermaids are non-furry per se, even of the addition of an animal appendage. They are more creatures of mainstream lore, mythology and fantasy Spirou 23:43, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
:Other mythological creatures have been featured here of similar lot. With a tremondous rewrite that ISN'T an import of Wikipedia, this could reasonably stay.--Kendricks Redtail 03:47, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
::Mermaids are humans with fishlike tails, not anthropomorphic fish. I don't think they are appropriate for an article in WikiFur. -- Sine 03:54, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
I would like some clarification as to why the centaur, selkie, sphinx, demon, etc. are acceptable as furry species and merfolk (mermaids, and mermen) are considered as not furry. Centaurs are the some proportion human as mermaids are and they are not anthropomorphic. A sphinx is less human but still mainstream. A selkie is considered by most to be a variety of mermaid. Mermaids are depicted in art in many if not most furry art archives and sites in one form or another. Please read the second sentence in Furry.

I personally know four furries that have characters that are mermaids or mermen, counting Dylan Addison a merman character of mine. Dylan has swam along with a mermaid at RCFM and MFM. We seemed to be accepted as just two more furry characters there.

I would like to create a “Mermaid” page that will introduce the species, describe there part in the furry fandom (characters, participation in furry events, etc.) and informs those interested in where to look further into this subject. Alternately, I would like a reasonable explanation as to why one combination of human and animal is considered different than another if it is the consensus of this group that a page about mermaids (including mermen) doesn’t belong here.XyLII 23:35, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

:I think XyLII raises a good question. When the article on Mermaids was deleted I did wonder why the article on Centaurs remained. If mermaids are "humans with fishlike tails, not anthropomorphic fish", could it not be said that centaurs are "humans with equine bodies, not anthropomorphic horses"? (Just my opinion, but I'd call mermaids "furry enough" for inclusion.) --Higgs Raccoon 00:46, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

::Inclusion of an animal component does not necessarily a make a humanoid furry. A Mermaid, just like a Satyr, Vampires, the Birdmen from Flash gordon, etc, are just that, humanoids with animal features, creatures from the long established world of mainstream mythology or science fiction,...

::Everytime we include one of type of beings into Wikifur, we always ended up in this situation/discussion,... some are easy to dismiss (Yeti's,) other toe the line (Centaurs, which brought a good point by somebody in IRC of their correlation to Chakats, pseudo-anthromorphs and furry... I now wish I had saved that discussion,) and then, the ones that have everybody scratching their heads on which way to go with them,...

::In this case, Mermaids =) As before, it's a general consensus that decides on the article merit, and I'm just going with my prior point against them (Sine makes a good point about this, too,)... Centaurs, I'm 50/50 on them, Silkies and Sphinxes, I can easily see them on the same level as Kitsunes (Japanese demon,) and, as per Demons, if they can be Human, why not Anthropomorphic too? =) Spirou 01:51, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

:::Hm. Personally, I think of centaurs as included in furry not because they are themselves necessarily furry (they're much more on the "mythological" side), but due to the long furry association created by people having made myriad different types of much-more-indisputably-furry taurs based on them. Had that not happened, I don't think they'd be appropriate either. Mermaids don't really have the same kind of association. Silvermink 04:24, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

::::So far this is the same situation that occurs when you get ten furs in a room and ask them what furry is. You get anywhere from twelve to fifteen similar but different answers.

::::The position that mermaids and mermen are too mainstream can also include all animals that have been in existence outside the furry fandom. All animals have more written about them by regular humans than furries. Other than the hybrids and Chakats, which are based on real animals and therefore too much outside the fandom, the only truly furry species that I know of is the purple furry eater, Ooga Chaka, by that definition. I thought we, as a group, were supposed to be working toward being accepted by the mainstream. This seems to me to help hold the separation between them and us.

::::The position that they are part animal but not furry and are too much fantasy, goes against the texts already within WikiFur. The second sentence in Furry is “Predominantly, it pertains to an interest in anthropomorphic animals and/or mythological or imaginary creatures which possess human or superhuman capabilities.” According to this definition, technically Spiderman is furry by the fact he is part radioactive spider by DNA transfer through a bite. Anthropomorphic? No. Imaginary creature with superhuman capabilities derived from being made part arachnid? Yes.

::::I personally am for the inclusion of any species or hybrid that is any part animal even if they have the outer appearance of being fully human. I thought WikiFur was about making knowledge of all things furry available to anyone interested for the present and the future. At RCFM, a few furries liked and wanted to get or make there own mertail. It had never occurred to them to look for one or for the information about mermaid tails on the internet just because they never knew they were available. I know one that now has a character that is a mermaid.

::::As to the Yeti, yes they are furry. Vampires, depends on the definition. Are they were bats or just humans that live from consuming blood? I notice there is a werewolf species. Why not were bats under the label vampire if that is how they feed?

::::I am sorry if you don’t agree with me in this. I will go along with the consensus of the community no matter what it is. Do we continue with this discussion or have we decided yes or no?XyLII 07:30, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

"Do we continue with this discussion or have we decided yes or no?." Some decisions may take a while, as all editors that may wish to make a point are not available/ready/online for a decision. If no consensus have been reached after 30 days, its brought back up for debate again at that time, and every 30 days after if necessary,... Patience is key sometimes - Spirou 10:28, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
:My opinion is that there is interest within the furry community, so it's a legitimate topic for inclusion here. Example: --Rat 10:31, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
::I'm concerned about the conflation of something that a furry is interested in with something that is in itself furry. As discussed some while back on :Category:Furry pilots, just because people who consider themselves furry are interested ins oemthing doesn't make that activity, or hobby, or interest furry.
::While I cannot argue that the defintion of furry which XyLII offers is true for XyLII, to me it is far too broad. My own defintion of furry is, I think, actually somewhat narrower than the usual (I can't say than the consensus) and makes a distinction between animal and nonhuman, with the latter rarely coming under the heading of furry. -- Sine 18:38, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
:::I was using "Spiderman" as an example of a character that fits the established definition of furry in WikiFur and not my own. It is an extreme stretch of that definition but I think out of a large group of furs that a few would at least consider it. I am seeking consistency. Are we to follow our own writings or some unwritten rules that I am unaware of? We have The Furry Book of Style and other help pages for how to write about something but nothing other than the pages of WikiFur to look to for defining what to write about.XyLII 01:46, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Horses are a very common species of animal in the real world. Domesticated horses play an important role in the human history. The adjective referring to horses is equine.

Physical characteristics
Horses are large, heavy, hoofed mammals. They are herbivores, and feed by grazing, commonly on grass.

Despite their large size and weight (up to 2500 pounds, or 1134 kg), horses are generally thought of as gentle creatures; however their hooves can cause great damage by kicking or trampling.

The fur of a horse is mostly very short, forming an almost skintight covering, except on the head and back of the neck, which grows long into a formation called the mane; and the tail, which is specialised in horses for protecting the rear from flies: it has a bunch of long, very fine hairs which are swiped to disturb the flies. Horse tails are prized for their silk-like hairs.

Breeds
The horse is largely a domestic animal, and has been bred for centuries. The species which produced the horse no longer exists in the wild, although some wild horse species exist.

Horses have been selectively bred to enhance various qualities, enabling them to fulfill various roles in their work for humans. Draft horses are bred for power, and are thus large and heavy; show horses are bred for grace and beauty; race horses, for speed.

Anthropomorphic horses
In furry artwork, anthro horses are often represented with hooved hands - either as full hooves that are somehow able to manipulate objects, or as more humanoid hands with hooflike nails.

A babyfur is a member of the furry fandom who enjoys roleplaying younger characters. They may also be an Adult Baby and/or Diaper Lover (collectively known as AB/DLs), or is otherwise involved in Infantilism. There are many different types of furs in the babyfur community, each focusing on different aspects and roles. Like furry in general, babyfur culture involves a good amount of role-playing (either light or heavy), both online and in the real world.

The community has been growing more and more popular since the mid- to late 90's. While the community itself is still part of the furry fandom as a whole, it is large enough to present sufficient leaders, politics and drama to give the community a nearly independent feel to it.

Role playing babyfurs will most often take on the role of a furry character in his/her infancy or childhood. Common roleplaying themes include "cute" clothing (onesies, footy pajamas, overalls, diapers) and a child's environment such as a nursery or day care center, complete with cribs, high chairs and babyish decor. A few babyfurs lucky enough to afford the privacy and devotion will set up adult nurseries to role play as children in real life. A sexual subset of this type of roleplaying is known as ageplay.

[[Image:Rieva-little.JPG|thumb|350px|right|Babyfurs in a Nutshell.<br\>Art by LoupGarou , character by Rieva]]

Terminology
Babyfur roles
There are a few sub-groups within the babyfur community which are often described with the following terminology :

*Babyfur : Used to describe the group as a whole, however, specifically it referrers to someone that roleplays as younger, up to the human equivalent of toddler age, characters. Baby paraphernalia is most likely to be involved for this group and role played speech is often either in gibberish or very basic speech.
*Lilfur (littlefur, kidfur) : This is a person that roleplays as a child character. Characters identified as lilfurs tend to between their toddler and teen ages. Diaper and other baby paraphernalia may or may not be involved. Role played speech is usually more refined at this point, but still somewhat juvenile.
*Diaperfur : This is a person that roleplays as an adult character that still either requires or choose to wear diapers. Role played speech and actions are consistent with an adult. The person may also roleplay an adult character that is mentally regressed back to a younger state, but still has an adult physical form.
*Sissyfur : This is commonly misunderstood as a person that roleplays a male character, either adult or child, that is forced to dress and act as a young female character. Truthfully, a sissyfur is anyone, male or female, that enjoys regression leaning toward a very feminized and sissified look and attitude.
*Caretaker : As the name suggests these are the people that roleplay caretaker characters, a 'mommy' or 'daddy' figure for other babyfurs.

Many people don't identify with one single group, but can change roles depending on the situation and who they are interacting with. It's also not uncommon for complex lineages (for example siblings, parents, etc) to be set up among other babyfurs so that roles can be defined.

Definition of AB/DLs
These are general non-furry terms but are useful to understand in this context.

*Adult Baby (AB) : A person that enjoys regressing back to being a baby. Beyond regressing using physical or environmental changes (such as diapers, clothing, and settings), they also mentally regress, taking the mentality of a baby. These are the equivalent to 'babyfurs' or 'lilfurs' when crossed with furry. Teenagers who are Adult Babies will sometimes refer to themselves as Teen Babies (TBs).

*Diaper Lover (DL) : A person that enjoys regressing back to being a baby, but limits the regressing to an environmental change (such as wearing diapers or using baby paraphernalia). These people, unlike AB's, will usually not regress physically (adopting a baby form) or mentally. These tend to be the equivalent of 'diaperfurs' in the babyfur community. For some DLs, but not all of them, there is a fetish connection to the diapers and baby play. They will sometimes take the submissive role to a caretaker in sexual play, and the caretaker will take a dominant role.

*Infantilist : Essentially, infantilism regards any person who enjoys regressing to the mental age of an infant or toddler, and may or may not involve diapers and other baby paraphernalia.

Baby things (and why)
From the Adult Baby (AB) angle of AB/DL, regressing individuals prefer to behave and be treated as much like a baby or toddler as possible. To do so successfully achieves in many babyfurs a comforting, secure or blissful feeling. Various paraphrenalia help to satisfy these preferences:

Clothing
Many babyfurs enjoy wearing all sorts of clothing. Some say the cuter it looks, the better it is. Such articles of clothing include the following :
*Overalls
*Shortalls
*Booties
*Dresses
*Onesies
*Pajamas
*Pants
*Footed sleepers
*Mittens
*Bows

Many male babyfurs find they enjoy being dressed as little girls as well, and are sometimes called sissyfurs. The classic baby bonnet (seen frequently in certain Looney Toons episodes) is not very common among babyfurs, which might be attributed to the fact that modern society doesn't find real babies wearing them either.

Plushies and toys
Just like clothing, interacting with plushies and toys is very contributive to the cub experience. Toys range in age from baby toys to toy cars and action figures. As long as cubs get to interact with one another though, toys are not always the focus in a roleplay.

Objects
A toddler's life is not complete without many of the following items. Many babyfurs use these objects in online roleplay and would love to be able to use them in the real world :
*Cribs
*Walkers
*Strollers
*High chairs
*Car seats
*Booster seats
*Pacifiers
*Baby bottles
*Sippy cups
*Talcum powder
*Bubble baths

In addition to physical objects, some babyfurs also find a keen interest in actions like blowing a raspberry, being held, or watching old television shows that are no longer available on TV. Many old children's shows such as 80's and early 90's cartoons on Nickelodeon were the same shows some babyfurs watched when they were little, and reminiscing about them leaves a nostalgic warmth.

Diaper usage (and why)
Diapers are an item frequently used while "cubbing out". Like other aspects of babyfur, this can be done in the virtual world, the real world, or both. There are many babyfurs, however, that while they will wear diapers in online roles, do not in real life. Many babyfurs will wear diapers in real life for a feeling of security and comfort, but will not use them for their intended purpose. At the other end of the spectrum, there are some babyfurs that, either by choice or by necessity, wear and use diapers all the time.

Why babyfurs wear, and possibly use, diapers in the real world is varied. For some, they are forced to wear them because of a medical condition and have no choice in the manner. These people have often blended their real life situation with their furry persona. For others, it is a way they can regress into their furry persona's age. Some others see the diapers as a connection to their furry persona, paralleling a tail or fursuit in the general furry community.

The wearing (and especially the use) of diapers in the real world are at the heart of many issues that some members of the furry community in general have with the babyfurs. For example, it is not generally considered appropriate for a diaper user to soil themselves at convention in the presence of other furry fans - or to put themselves in a situation where this is likely to happen - yet individuals have been known to do this, to the detriment of the group's reputation.

Babyfur behavior
When cubbing out in both the real world and in online roleplaying, the level of connection to the role will vary between each player. Some babyfurs will become so involved and yearn for such an authentic childish mentality that they will use speech impediments and baby talk to communicate. Very few babyfurs make a habit out of using babytalk in the real world, similar to a gay lisp. Depending on the situation, a babyfur could even develop a habit of whining or crying to get what he/she wants from a caregiver or another roleplayer.

In light online role-playing, babyfurs may toddle, crawl and wag their tails playfully while the sounds of crinkling diapers abound. Pouncing, giggling, cuddling, snuggling and tummy rubbing ensue with the maximum possible level of cuteness.

Child-like behaviour, baby animal sounds and an emphasis on cuteness are widespread among furry fans when among themselves, even those who don't call themselves babyfurs and who don't participate in other babyfur activities described here, such as diapers or baby clothing.

While most babyfurs are closely attached to the development of young humans, a different approach can be found in online role-play, where newborn zoomorphic and anthropomorphic characters often grow up at a similar pace as wild animals, doing without accessories such as diapers and learning to walk in a short time. This has the practical advantage of sooner getting into an age that allows interesting role-play even for non-babyfurs when playing a character since birth. As in nature, opinions on when a character can be considered adult vary greatly.

Cubbing Out
"Cubbing Out" is a general term used by the community to describe roleplaying as a babyfur character. This can either be roleplay in the virtual world or the real world. Usually it will involve one or more regressed characters or people interacting with each other or with a caregiver.

"Padding" and "Getting Padded" may also refer to cubbing, in particular regarding to being diapered.

The caregiver's role
Caregivers (or caretakers) are the 'mommy' and 'daddy' figures in the roleplay. For the most part, they interact with other babyfurs as a mother or father would with their child. This can include playing with, cleaning or disciplining the younger character.

Babyfurs at furry conventions
Just like furries in general, babyfurs go to conventions to spend time with friends and express their furriness. For many, that includes their babyfur aspects too. One may see many babyfurs dressed in juvenile clothing and with various paraphernalia because that is part of how they choose to express themselves. To some babyfurs, dressing in such a way is no different than other furries wearing ears, tails or fursuits.

At many conventions, hotel rooms are set up as gathering places for babyfurs to socialize privately. Two of the most notable are the C'ubhouse and Nursery run by LilPup and Snuggems, respectively.

History of the babyfur community
*1995 - Proxima Centauri opens The Nursery on FurryMUCK.
*1995-01-13 - Proxima Centauri runs the first official "AB/DL Furry" convention gathering at 6, though unsuccessful.
*1995-08-04 - BitterGrey opens Understanding Infantilism, then known as "BitterGrey's Den," a website for ABDLs and Furries.
*1996-09-09 - Proxima Centauri officially opens Nursery Tails.
*1997 - Snuggems opens the FurryMUCK DayKare and Bottoms-Up Diaper Company.
*1998-01-15 - Snuggems runs The Nursery, the first successful convention gathering for babyfurs, at 9. The Nursery has been held at 18 furry conventions.
*2000 - #nowhere_grotto is created on YiffNet as an alternative to #babyfurs and #littlepaws. The new channel grows to rival the size of #babyfurs, but falls before #babyfur is created in 2004.
*2001-07 - LilPup runs the first C'ubHouse at Anthrocon.
*2004-07 - Ludwig creates #babyfur as an alternative to #babyfurs, now on FurNet, to allow users to chat with fewer rules and regulations.
*2004-09-13 - The Babyfurs mailing list, having moved to Yahoo! Groups, is deleted by Yahoo! and is revived as "Babyfurs_part2."
*2004-12-11 - Yahoo! again deletes the mailing list, and the group moves to Babyfurs on Smartgroups.
*2006-11-30 - SmartGroups ceases service. Babyfurs mailing list ceases to exist after over six years.

Community leaders and important babyfurs
The following babyfurs are among the most known and respected in the furry fandom, recognized here for their contributions and devotion to the babyfur community:
*BabyTiger has been a member of the babyfur community since 1998, A Canadian Babyfur who has a strong presence at the Canadian conventions such at C-ACE and Anthrofest, organizing and hosting BabyFur gatherings. He also works and helps out with newer babyfurs in the community, making them feel welcomed and lending a paw to any who need the help.

*Karis owns and maintains Karis' Playground , featuring a large collection of babyfur and AB/DL images by artists of all rank. Karis' Playground also offers a store where visitors can purchase prints of babyfur art by various professional artists, including Marci McAdam. Karis was the first person to make babyfur/diaper art available at furry conventions, thus pioneering the community known today as "Babyfurs."

*LilPup and Lil Kitt run and manage the Babyfur C'ubhouse at furry conventions for babyfurs to get together and have fun. LilPup also runs the Online Babyfur Community, a central website that features the Babyfur Proximity Locator (BFPL) for babyfurs to locate one another around the world. Like Swift and Orca, LilPup works to improve the relationship between babyfurs and non-babyfurs at conventions and to help babyfurs maintain a positive reputation in the furry fandom.

*Orca co-moderates the Babyfurs mailing list with SwiftFox. He maintains the Babyfurs mailing list and an external file archive. He routinely reports links to interesting or humorous online articles relating to AB/DLs. Orca is also the famed inventor of the "Orca Stack."

*Proxima Centauri's name is perhaps the first name known to newcomers to the babyfur community as they search to satisfy their newly found interests. Proxima runs Nursery Tails, one of the longest running AB Furry pages, dating back to 1997 (before the term "babyfur" had existed) and featuring thousands of babyfur art, fiction and multimedia files. Though it is in dire need of a new layout, the webpage still runs strong today.

*Snuggems is most known for running the Nursery at Anthrocon, a room devoted to giving to those kids and cubs at heart who need to be cared for. Although it started up first and despite that the two meeting spots have different ratings and features, Snuggems' Nursery has been often been said to view the C'ubhouse as competition.

*Swift Fox has been a member of the babyfur community since its inception in the mid to late 90's. He writes babyfur fiction, has been owner and moderator of several iterations of the Babyfurs mailing list, and hosts several furry and AB/DL events in the Pittsburgh area. (Swift's Den)

Babyfur art and literature
A few of the authors and artists in the babyfur community are :

Artists
*Marci McAdam is the most popular artist in the babyfur community. Although she is not a babyfur herself, her professional abilities and open-mindedness make her one of the best artist around. It is often said that a babyfur isn't officially a babyfur until he has purchased a badge or commission from Marci McAdam. Her babyfur art can be found for sale at her husband's website, Karis' Playground, and her other art is located at Marci McAdam's Furries. Due to her time constraints in doing professional art, Marci is unable to take fandom-related commissions anymore.

*BushyCat appears at several furry conventions and is well known for her humorous-yet-innocent take on babyfurs as well as other alternative genres of furry art. Some of her creations have more human-like qualities than other artists tend to portray in their characters.

*JadeFox is one of the more active babyfur artists in the community, offering special contests and events for fans to participate in. The majority of his work is based on his own character or other babyfurs' characters. His drawings are especially creative and imaginative, bringing out only the most treasured aspects of childhood, as well as very innovative clothing design (featuring several brands and companies of his own devising). Furry Jade Fox

*Kelvin the Lion is a fairly popular artist whose current endeavors include (among others) the progressive webcomic Nivlek, about the adventures of Nivlek the snow leopard who enjoys wearing diapers and eating. Nivlek remains to be one of the more amusing "weird" furry comics out there, and his talent does not go unnoticed. Kelvin's Furry Den

*FangKit has been drawing babyfurs for most of this decade, and continues to improve his artistic talent. His unique style and knack for cuteness and humor combine to make him favored by babyfurs throughout the community. FangKit's Pics

*OzzyFox, a student of animation at the Art Institute of Houston, consistently produces work on a regular basis that ranges from cuddly-cute to controversial and mature. Fox Crib

*IkazuchiFox (commonly known by friends as "Ikajuicy") is found in the definition for "ubercute" listed in UrbanDictionary. He is one of the few amateur babyfur artists with work unique and notable enough to be recognized by the fandom. Although Ikazuchi has not done a sketch for a long time, it is the hope of many furs that he will start drawing again.

*Astolpho, also known to his friends outside the furry community as rootdown, has a technique characterized by light, open outlines, bright pastel colors, and innocent expressions. Some of Astolpho's work is now available at Karis' Playground.

*Cargo Weasel's art leans strongly toward the "DL" side of "AB/DL," showing off mature diaper-related concepts that fit perfectly with his coloring and shading style. His art was featured on a now-defunct mailing list, but can still be found on his website: Cargo Weasel: Art Complex

*Familliar, a relatively new artist to the scene is a regular at the Blue Furry Oekaki board run by Guppy. Already a fan favorite within the babyfur community, Familliar regulary draws pictures of both his own character creations as well as that of his commissioners in his own charmingly creative & endearing way. His artwork can be found at: Familliar's FA website.

*Aramitz's artwork focuses almost exclusively on the "DL" side of commisions for the babyfur community. His unique style is characterised with bold, thick & prominent inking lines set against the subtle use of cell-shaded coloring. Aramitz currently maintains galleries at all the major prominent furry art websites such as: Aramitz's FA website.

Art about babyfurs
Some furry fandom artists have covered the topic of babyfurs, typically taking the same line as external commentators on the entire fandom:

Writers
*CS Fox, also known as Kit Fox and Cyprus Sygial, is possibly the best known babyfur writer in the community. His works are the biggest features in the stories section at Nursery Tails, and since his submissions to Proxima's site he has gone on to host his own website showing off babyfur fiction of his own and by newer babyfur writers. The latest rendition of CS Fox's site, Fox Tales Times, is being completed as this article is written. Its biggest feature is CS Fox's renowned AB/DL RPGM2K-based game, Weston Academy. The website also sports plenty of comics and art related to the RPG.

*Firemane's fiction is prominently featured on CS Fox's fiction page.

*Fieval Mouse's work is still favored by many furs. His stories are roughly 5 years old and are found on Proxima's Nursery Tails, featuring illustrations by Doodles.

*Athalon is another notable furry writer who has written the lightly famous The Milkshake Club.

Babyfur as a paraphilia
Babyfurs and pedophilia
Like other furry fans, babyfurs often exhibit sexual attraction to anthropomorphic animals by participating in TinySex. But because this usually involves adult players roleplaying sexual situations involving prepubescent characters, the question of whether babyfurs are pedophiles often arises.

Babyfurs generally assert that roleplaying as underage characters doesn't imply sexual attraction to such characters. For example, some roleplay as young furries due to a longing to be young again, and have no sexual element to their roleplay.

Of those that do participate in sexual activity, some are interested in (for example) the fantasy of submission to an adult figure. Those who have TinySex with other babyfurs sometimes argue that if there is no adult character involved, the activity is not pedophilia. Others may stress that since characters portrayed are not human, it is not meaningfully pedophilia. Outsiders often disagree, since the activity still involves actual adults taking an interest in prepubertal persons depicted in sexual situations.

This debate applies equally to visual and written depictions of babyfurs in sexual relations, and disagreements are often intense, between those with concerns about pedophilia, those who feel babyfur is distinct from pedophilia (because of players' identification with characters or the species of those characters), and those who don't care who enjoys it just as long as they're not forced to see it.

Babyfurs vs. non-babyfurs
The concept of babyfurs is quite contentious with some members of the fandom. Some furries and non-furries who have identified themselves as babyfurs or were identified by others as being babyfurs may have acted inappropriately at conventions in the past. Such contentious behavior has allegedly included wearing diapers in public without using proper hygiene and trying to push uninterested people into babyfur roleplay, including sexual roleplay. These behaviors are frowned upon by the babyfur community in general, and such incidents, if perpetrated by babyfurs, are done by a small number of babyfurs within a larger babyfur community. The community in general adopted guidelines of conduct for how to act in public after a rash of such alleged incidents at conventions in an effort to police themselves.

Furries who dislike babyfurs may do so for a variety of common points, including:

*Grossed out by the concept of diaper lovers (or, in the aforementioned cases, by the smell)
*Concern that some babyfurs may be pedophiles
*Previous negative experiences with those who identify themselves as babyfurs or were identified by others as being babyfurs.
*Fear that babyfur behavior will be associated as a characteristic of the general fandom, especially in the media

While there is some conflict between babyfurs and the general fandom, such conflicts should not be overstated. The majority of babyfurs and non-babyfurs coexist quite well because the majority of babyfurs do not engage in the more extreme behaviors mentioned here.

Babyfur online
Babyfurs have a well established community full of art, resources, and as many modes of communication as the rest of the furry fandom.

The Perry Bible Fellowship (PBF for short) is a webcomic by Nicholas Gurewitch. It originated in the Syracuse University newspaper The Daily Orange. The comics are short and three or four panels long, and are generally characterized by the juxtaposition of childlike imagery or fantasy with extremely morbid humor, with no set plot. A variety of artistic styles are employed.

PBF is updated once per week (originally on Sundays to correspond with its Biblical title, but now more often on Tuesdays), and has a devoted following. It appears in around a dozen newspapers, including the New York Press, and The Guardian.

Subject matter
A significant proportion of the strips feature anthropomorphic content, although there is no indication whether or not any association with the furry fandom is intended. Furry or not, much of the content is sexually explicit.

History
Aatheus's period
In late 1999, a young college student, Aatheus, built a tiny online auction service as part of an experiment. Using the quite buggy EveryAuction 1.01 program, he designed FurBid, the first all-furry online auction site of its kind. The original purpose was to create a working server environment. His decision to build it around furry was more a matter of taste than it was an attempt to fill a gap in the community. The creation itself was relatively uneventful and on November 8, 1999 FurBid officially opened.

Shortly after opening it was seen by The Dragon De Monsyne at Transform.to, who offered Aatheus hosting space. On November 18, 1999 FurBid was moved to its new host (furrybid.transform.to), where it remained until January 27, 2001 when it was moved to Ezzi Net at the suggestion of Gushi.

During that time FurBid suffered from many internal problems, including great deal of downtime caused by outside sources. Some of the many problems faced included script glitches, hard drive problems, a December 26, 2000 DoS prompted by Somethingawful listing FurBid in its "Awful Site of the Day", and file corruption.

Perhaps the most significant problem was the announcement by Aatheus on December 9, 2000 of the acquisition of furbid.com and loss of the domain to Ragscoon of FurSale who stole it out from under Aatheus due to personal issues between the two and offered to sell it to him on January 20, 2001 for the price of $500.00. This event led to a long time rivalry between FurBid and FurSale.fact

Another significant issue was a complete crash in the summer of 2003 which brought the system down for over a month.

Ayukawataur's period
At Further Confusion 2003, Aatheus mentioned to Ayukawataur his desire to find another administrator to take over FurBid. During this time she was experimenting with the EveryAuction software on her own pet project (the-abcb cafe). Her initial response was quite negative, claiming "You could not pay me enough to take over that kludge".

Aatheus continued his search amongst others he felt would be qualified until he again returned to Ayukawataur just shortly before Further Confusion 2004. They agreed to discuss the issue and at the con he revealed to her in private that he had not found an admin to take over and as such FurBid would be shut down in the summer when he left to pursue more college. She agreed to consider the problem.

After a lunch and gallery browsing meeting in Carmel by the Sea in Northern California, Ayukawataur agreed to take over the administration of FurBid. In February of 2004 she was appointed as Assistant Administrator. Despite her title she was acting the role of Admin. and was using the name Assistant Admin to give the community time to adjust to her presence.

This was not without its share of problems as many members of the community disagreed with her appointment. The drama which took place lasted quite some time and was mostly built around her being involved with a prominent furry artist Kacey Miyagami and claims that a conflict of interest would develop. This has not occurred.

It was revealed she was the administrator in late May of 2004, shortly after the revamp of the Discussion Board with a database driven system. Other projects she worked on during that time were a creation of a FAQ, tightening of rules and the ToS, a mascot contest, and a radical departure from the previous stances on bestiality and pedophilia.

In May of 2005 she retired the old EveryAuction system and replaced it with a modern and more efficient mySQL server which she dubbed FurBid-SF. The SF representing ScienceFiction/Fantasy in an attempt to expand the awareness of FurBid users to other genres.<br>
The opening of FurBid-SF was also not entirely smooth. There were numerous rewrites which took place over the period of many months after launch. To better streamline the code she drafted the skills of Ch'marr and Gushi. During this time she also moved the server from its residence at Ezzi Net to be one of the early systems in Gushi's Colo in Jersey.

Part of her plan included the first successful implementation of associated fees for any of the furry auction houses.

On November 13, 2007, Ayukawataur announced appointing Gushi as a new Assistant Administrator. His duties include primarily programming and debugging.

Fees
There was a great deal of controversy when Ayukawataur announced that FurBid-SF was including paid features. Though minor, many claimed it was unfair, or that she was nothing more than a money hungry tyrant. Over time these claims have subsided and the fee structure has become an accepted function by the majority of the community.

The purpose of these fees was to provide a symbiotic relationship with those who wished to provide support with FurBid-SF's substantial bill. As a reward for this support a user could have better placement or better visibility. It also provided better accounting records for the IRS than just having donations.

According to the Administaur, the basic functions of FurBid-SF, which include listing, bidding, and buying, shall forever remain free to all users. It is only the additional items which will ever have an associated investment.

For a detailed breakdown of the minor charges which are associated with FurBid-SF, refer to http://www.furbid.ws/cgi-bin/auction/fees.pl

The Administaur of FurBid-SF has constantly fought with PayPal for the right to allow her community to use it for paying their FurBid-SF fees. To date she has been unsuccessful in convincing them that paying for an auction service is not the same as purchasing adult oriented items.

Current status
As of late August 2006, FurBid-SF has 12,299 unique registered users. This number grows at a steady rate of an average of around thirty a week. At any given time there are between 900 and 1100 auctions open. Of almost 21,000 auctions listed, almost 18,100 successfully closed with bids.

Mascots
Toward the end of 2001, Aatheus proposed a contest for a Furbid Mascot. The idea was well received, generating five major participants and a total of 501 votes. On January 1, 2002 Aatheus tallied all the votes and gave us all a list of things. The winner was Caribou with her creation Sheckles the Bat with a total of 161 votes. Runner up was Kacey Maltzman with her character Breeze the Spotted Skunktaur with 122 votes. Flinthoof created Jake and earned 102 votes, Iron Badger submitted Fiona with 61 votes and Silverwyvern created Tyler bringing in 55 votes.

Shortly after Sheckles fell to the wayside due many previous commitments of his creator, and in Sheckles' place Kacey created some images that were used on official Furbid merchandise.

On June 17, 2004, Ayukawataur reopened the idea of a mascot for FurBid-SF, or, to be more precise, as FurBid-SF is a community, a group of mascots. Of the many mascot ideas submitted, five were selected by community vote on August 15, 2004. Breeze returned, this time to take the greatest portion of votes (62.04%), followed by Rachele, Faria, Keesa, and Seru.

Although the mascots were originally intended to maintain a presence on FurBid-SF itself and to provide a measure of community spirit, the only work using them so far has been by Kacey Miyagami.

Breeze currently graces the Discussion Board banner and the FurBid-SF main banner.

Conventions
FurBid-SF has no convention presence. The Administaur prefers FurBid-SF gain new members through word of mouth.

At Anthrocon 2004, Jurann, the administrator of FurBuy, approached Ayukawataur with an offer of $50,000 (initially $1,000) "for the rights and ownership to Furbid" to shut down FurBid-SF. She declined, claiming that it was the right of the community to decide which service they wanted to use.

Bans
The Administaur has constantly rejected pressure by a small portion of the community to ban non-synthetic animal fur from FurBid-SF.

Only four persons have been permanently banned from using FurBid-SF.

The Raccoon Gang is a semi-furry experimental music group from Dundee in Scotland.
Originally a trio, the group's memebers consisted of Keeny Fox, under the alias of Mark "The Fox", along with Craig "The Adventurer" and John "The Colourless".

Mark is the only member that is a furry. The band occasionally has periods of hiatus, as Craig is not a serious poet and Mark is also a member of a more serious band, as well as his preoccupation with a solo project. John's last song with the band was in April 2007, and in November the same year it was officially announced he was no longer part of the group due to his constant attendance at Cambridge University. The group have decided to carry on as a duo as before until further notice.

They notably hold a friendly rivalry with fellow experimental band F#, who are a four-piece hardcore jazz band.

Style
Formed in the late summer of 2006, The Raccoon Gang play freestyle electro-pop fused with elements of rock and hip-hop. Amongst the band's unique traits is their spoken word style lyrics which are performed over the top of their songs. The band do not perform live, but have released videos onto YouTube.

The Raccoon Gang recorded their first three albums live and on the spot: the first was made on an old tape recorder and the following two on a Fostex multitrack. They have since produced more polished material with separate tracks. All their material cost practically nothing to make and produce since it was done quickly in the members' own time.

The group have so far recorded six albums and one compilation. Because of their deliberately extreme low-budget, they give away their music for free, no longer putting out CD's on a whim and instead allowing people to download their songs from the Internet.

Their track I'm Not A Freak (which appears on their third album) is a song which is about furries, but it is not a popular track with the members themselves. Ironically, the group seldom mentions furries in their songs.

Mascot
One of the band's leading features is their mascot, a cartoon raccoon named Robin. His appearances have changed over the early months. Originally drawn as a feral raccoon, Robin evolved into a more "Toony" look, wearing a green and orange sweater and dark brown jacket. Later on, he appeared to have reverted back into a more animal-like appearance, wearing a yellow bandana.

Mentioned in many of the band's songs, Robin also has a younger sister named Rebecca, who is first seen on the artwork of the Gang's fifth album. He also has an older brother called Ryan who was forced out by the family and adopted by an evil character. Not much is known about him (apart from being an anti-hero), and it is likely he will have a bigger role in a future album.

I'm sorry for the mess, Sine. I'm Turael from the muck, and we had someone who hadn't been active for years come in and edit the page with some inaccurate information and a few things we felt were uunnecessary. The background blurb is what we use to describe the muck, it's supposed to not make a lot of sense as the muck itself is random and strange. I can replace it with something a bit more ccoherent if you'd prefer, but we're really fond of the description Sedna wrote for us. 72.188.167.235
:No need to apologise! You adding information is much appreciated, and tweaking things into the usual style and format can be done later. (Tidying articles is a task I often find enjoyable.) A bit of a source for the background blurb would be good, maybe just "Written by Sedna". It can stay strange if marked as a quotation, and I think it's not too long to be included in full in the article. -- Sine 18:19, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Furry Weekend Atlanta
Furry Weekend Atlanta, often abbreviated simply as FWA, is a regional furry convention held in Atlanta around Valentine's Day, usually with a similar theme (represented in the conbook and on the con shirt). FWA's mascots are a fennec fox and a rabbit. The convention started in 2004, and most recently occurred on the weekend of February 16 to 18 in 2007. It will next occur the weekend of February 15 to 17 in 2008. It is the 4th largest furry convention.

History
Furry Weekend Atlanta was the logical outgrowth of furry gathering held for years in Atlanta at the homes of various furs. Over the years, as more and more furs showed up in the metro Atlanta area, the gatherings became larger and larger. The idea of holding a furry convention was raised by several members of the Atlanta furry family, first in 2001 when nothing became of it, and then again in 2003. As the result of several planning sessions held in August of 2003, a concrete plan emerged to hold a convention in February of 2004. The name chosen echoes that of Anime Weekend Atlanta.

Furry Weekend Atlanta 2004
About 270 people attended the first Furry Weekend Atlanta at the Holiday Inn Airport North from February 13 to 15 in 2004. The guest of honor was LatinVixen.

Furry Weekend Atlanta 2005
Around 500 people from 32 states and three foreign countries attended the convention from February 11 to 13 in 2005. The guests of honor included Jessie T. Wolf and Fel.

Furry Weekend Atlanta 2006
557 people from 36 states and four foreign countries attended the convention from February 17 to 19 in 2006. The guests of honor included Bill Holbrook and Matt Burt.

Furry Weekend Atlanta 2007
Furry Weekend Atlanta 2007 selected the Sheraton Gateway Hotel as its new venue. The Holiday Inn Airport North had become too small for the size of the convention, and the new facility offered roughly double the space available to the rapidly growing convention. However, the Sheraton itself was sold out before the 2007 convention. The final attendance count was 762, a 37% increase over the previous year. The guests of honor included Strider Orion and Daria McGrain.

Furry Weekend Atlanta 2008
The website for FWA reopened on May 21, 2007, with basic information on Furry Weekend Atlanta 2008. It will return to the Sheraton Gateway Hotel on February 15-17, 2008, with Bonk and Tilt_Longtail as the Guests of Honor.

Organization
Furry Weekend Atlanta is produced by Furry Weekend Atlanta, Inc., a non-profit corporation organized pursuant to the Georgia Non-Profit Corporation Code. Furry Weekend Atlanta Inc., in turn, is headed by an Executive Committee and tasked with operating the yearly convention, and promoting the acceptance and appreciation of the anthropomorphic fandom in the Southeast and throughout the country as a whole. As a non-profit corporation, only funds necessary for the continuing operation of the convention are retained; the remaining funds are donated to appropriate charities.

In addition to operating the convention, Tiger Paw also moderates FLORA, and works to organize the Georgia furry population for entertainment and service.

In accordance with Furry Weekend Atlanta's bylaws, all convention staff meetings are open unless issues being discussed are especially divisive or the good name of a member is being discussed.

Executive Committee
The current Executive Committee of Furry Weekend Atlanta, Inc. consists of:
* Tiger Paw, Chairman/CEO, a businessman from Atlanta.
* Kiran Lightpaw, Director of Operations, a businessman and software engineer from Huntsville, Alabama.
* Santa Fox, Director of Fursuit Events, an IT manager from Atlanta.
* Ulf Formynder, Set/Strike Coordinator, a broadcasting student from Atlanta.
* Tiger Nick, a Graphic Designer from Atlanta.
* Hux, Director of Programming, a businessman and software engineer from Atlanta.

Staff
At the end of every convention, Furry Weekend Atlanta opens its staffing ranks for the next convention season in a meeting held usually following closing ceremonies. Prospective applicants will be able to find out a little about the "behind the scenes" work of the convention, and will be informed how to fill out the application online.

Charities
From 2005 to 2006, Furry Weekend Atlanta's official charity was the Ellijay Wildlife Rehabilitation Sanctuary, located a short distance from Atlanta in Ellijay, Georgia. The sanctuary is a state and federally licensed facility operated by Craig and Debbie Cylke, both of whom are certified in wildlife rehabilitation. To date, the sanctuary’s dedicated staff has educated over 100,000 children and adults through on-site course offerings, summer camps, and mobile education programs. Furry Weekend Atlanta attendees donated almost $4,000 to the Sanctuary in 2006, and almost $3,000 the year before.

The official charity for 2007 and 2008 is Conservator's Center, Inc., a nonprofit organization working for the preservation of target threatened species through scientifically responsible captive breeding, organizing and participating in a coalition of organizations to manage and mediate animal emergency and crisis resolution situations nationally while serving as a resource for the educational and scientific communities.

<!-- Sadly, people tend to want to vandalise this page. Please note that if you do, your changes will be reverted, most likely within a few minutes of doing so. If you have something to say about furry that isn't part of a definition of it, try the discussion page. :-) -->
The word furry has several meanings, dependent on the context in which it is used. Predominantly, it pertains to an interest in anthropomorphic animals and/or mythological or imaginary creatures which possess human or superhuman capabilities. The plural form of furry in all its contexts is furs or furries; the subjects of furry interest are also known as furries.

What it means to be furry
Someone who says they are furry is generally expressing an interest in anthropomorphic animals and/or creatures.

Unfavorable attention from the media has created a negative stereotype of a furry. Contrary to how a Furry is portrayed in pop culture and mass media, how deep or meaningful an interest in Furry is varies greatly from person to person. Also, the breadth of a person's interest in the fandom, and what ultimately makes them furry, is specific to each individual. Below is a list of common interests with which a fur is likely to identify. A furry may be interested in any or all of them, to any degree.

Someone claiming to be furry would also be part of the furry fandom.

Furry's gamut of interests
Cartoons and games
Interest in anthropomorphic animals and/or creatures can be as simple as the many popular furry cartoon characters, known as funny animals. These may include Bugs Bunny, Tony the Tiger, Sly Cooper, Star Fox, etc. However, someone who merely happens to like these characters is not necessarily a furry; the degree and nature of one's interest is relevant here.

Spirituality
Some furs believe they have a spiritual connection to a particular animal which is typically their fursona, but also may be a totem. Strong spiritual believers may often say that they are "an animal in a human body" (and in fact may identify themselves as Otherkin, Weres and/or Therians). Furry lifestylers often fall into this category.

Art and creativity
Some furs may be interested only in the creative aspects of the furry fandom. Furry content, both online and off, is easy to obtain, and available in vast amounts, and furs produce new works regularly. Furry artwork is also done by many nonfurries as well in targeting the fandom. Others may disassociate themselves from the fandom and refer to themselves as funny animal artists. Furries may also enjoy role-playing a particular furry character or fursona, sometimes writing about this character or recording their online interactions for posterity.

Fursuiting
A relatively uncommon practice among furries is to dress up in a costume that is typically designed after a fursona. These "fursuits" are usually worn at conventions, and a few are even designed to accommodate sexual situations.

Sexuality
To some furs, the sexual attraction to anthropomorphic animals is a part of what makes them furry. This is a topic of much controversy, as it has been the subject of early media attention (such as that from Wired Magazine and Vanity Fair), leading to its becoming a common conception of furry community at large. This has spawned a few groups in response (such as the Burned Furs) with a desire to discourage this angle, or create a clear distinction between these furries and the rest of the community.

Other contexts of Furry
From within the fandom, anything classified as an anthropomorphic animal and/or creature could be called a furry. That could be anything from Scooby Doo to various sports mascots to Omaha the Cat Dancer. Since mainstream characters are generally not created with furries in mind, the furry context is presumed by most outsiders to not be present despite subcultural interest.

Any art showcasing anthropomorphic animals is generally considered furry artwork. Artwork that contains furries in sexual situations may be called yiff or spooge art.

Non-furry furries
Anthropomorphic creatures that are also considered to be furry (even with the lack of pelt or fur) include (but are not limited to): dragons and lizards (also known as scalies and herps, respectively,) birds and gryphons (also known as featheries or avians,) and taurs (centaurs being the prime example.)

XyLII: /* Greek mythology and furries */

Greek mythology encompasses the beliefs and rituals of Classical Greece. It was followed for over three thousand years until the establishment of Christianity and Islam. Unlike many ancient religions, most of Greek mythology came from the telling of stories by the ancient Greeks, concerning their gods and heroes, the nature of the world and their own cult and ritual practices. Different versions of the tales have created conflicting stories or combined with each other for more epics.

Greek mythology and furries
Greek mythology has no end of stories and characters that appeal to furries, from human/animal hybrids, to stories of transformations. Some furry spiritualists consider this to be one of the earliest forms of furry.

Examples of Greek mythological creatures that have made their way to furry today include:
*Minotaurs
*Centaurs
*Satyrs
*Fauns
*Ipotanes
*Dragons, such as Ladon and Python and the Hydra
*Chimeras, such as the creature of the same name and the Sphinx
Foxes in Greek mythology
Even furry favorite foxes appear in Greek mythology, most noticably the Teumessian fox, a gigantic fox destined never to be caught, sent by the gods to prey upon the children of Thebes as a punishment. Amphitryon, the stepfather of the Greek hero Hercules, stopped the fox by catching the magical dog Laelaps, who was destined to catch everything it chased. Zeus, faced with an inevitable contradiction in fate (an uncatchable fox being pursued by an unavoidable dog) turned the pair of beasts into stone.
Transformation stories in Greek mythology
Transformation is another common theme in Greek mythology. Many stories were recorded by the poet Ovid in his collection The Metamorphoses, a narrative of over 100 stories from myth and legend. Many stories surround a maiden or a man transformed into a beast often for sex or as a punishment. An example of this is the story of Actaeon, a young prince and hunter who stumbled across the goddess Artemis bathing. Actaeon hid in the bushes and spied on her as she continued to bathe; she was enraged to discover the spy, and turned him into a stag which was pursued and killed by his own hounds.

Another story relates to Io, a beautiful nymph seduced by the god Zeus. When Zeus was caught, he tried to hide Io by turning her into a cow. Hera, Zeus's wife demanded that the cow be given to her as a tribute and Zeus was forced to agree. Hera forced her to wander the earth plagued by a gadfly until Zeus was able to transform her back into human.

Among the oldest werewolf stories are derived from Greek myth. Pausanias wrote that the first king of Arcadia, Lycaon, made human sacrifices to Zeus (some sources suggest cannibalism,) who in turn punished Lycaon by turning him into a wolf. One of the oldest cults in history, attributed to Zeus Lycaeus, has its origins in that story: an annual sacrifice was held in Zeus's honor, in which a man was chosen to become a wolf. If, in ten years, he abstained from human flesh, he was permitted to regain his humanity. Such a cult has since been driven out by more Hellenistic followers of Zeus.

The witch Circe was fond of transforming men into beasts such as lions and wolves. When the Greek hero Odysseus came to her island, she transformed several of his men into pigs.

The Christian Furry Fellowship, led by Pastor Oren Otter, a licensed minister, is an organization with the purpose of promoting the idea that one can be furry and be a Christian at the same time, and of promoting Christianity within the furry community. The group has two assistant leaders ("deacons"): Draco Dei and Ann Vole. Music Director Ashenfox completes the board of elders.

Each Saturday, the members of the CFF gather in chat for a somewhat traditional church service, including hymns (which generally involve the downloading of midis and lyrics), prayer, a sermon and a time of sharing and fellowship. Wednesday meetings are far less formal, existing solely for the purpose of friendly chat. Bible studies are done on the website forums, and occasionally on the group's mailing list as well. The Christian Furry Fellowship, while tending towards baptistic doctrines, is non-denominational. Everyone is welcome, including non-Christians.

The Christian Furry Fellowship also keeps a fund for helping the poor and supports a clothing drive for the Lakota indians each summer.
Goblin Hollow (formerly known as Under the Lemon Tree) is a comic created by Ralph Hayes, Jr., who also produces several other webcomics.

Premise
spoiler
The comic centers around Ben Bruin, who arrives home one day from his job at the "Bullseye" department store to discover he now shares his home with six posse-tulpas, plus later a seventh, small characters each of whom represents an aspect of his personality that he had repressed. They are not usually visible to anyone except Ben and a select few others (including Lily Feldspar, for that matter), but they are able to wreak havoc on Ben's life until he learns to deal with them.

One of Ben's co-workers, Lily Feldspar, soon becomes his girlfriend and the only other person who knows about the tulpas and can see them on a regular basis. Eventually, Ben and Lily get married. After Ben loses his job at Bullseye, they buy an old haunted house and convert it into a video arcade.

Note: The strip archives prior to the opening of the arcade are currently unavailable.

FMV Explosion is a series of "Furry Music Videos" (the name possibly derived from AMV, "Anime Music Video") created by Leon Fauve, each of which is a combination of random furry videos put to random music and soundtracks.

Every furry video is ended by an explosion, and every FMV includes an explosion after the credits. The only Furry Music Video that did not include an explosion after the credits was the very first one, but FMV Explosion - With Credits does include one.

FMV Explosion 5 - Fulla' Fursonality includes the catchphrase "When the normals are away, the furrys come to play" right before the explosion after the credits.

The series was initially going to finish after the 6th edition. However Fauve has now revealed that a seventh is in the works and is to be released soon.

Room For One More is a webcomic created by Brittany Greatbear, also known as Fnaire Antbear; scripted and penciled by Oren Otter; and inked, finished and maintained by Eala Dubh. The comic is the flagship Ottercomics title.

* Website: www.taur.net/~ottercomics/rfom

The main cast
Room For One More stars Fnaire Antbear, an Anteater who was born in South America, raised in South Africa, and who now lives in Critter County Colorado, where she attends college and works as a cartoonist. Fnaire rents a room in a mansion owned by Frye Opossum, a multi-billionaire who works as a baby-sitter for the love of the job. Also renting there is Aroma Skunk, an interior decorator who also attends college.

Supporting cast
Besides the three girls, three young men help to carry the stories. They are Terry the aardvark, a clothing designer with a flair for the ridiculous, Adonis, a lion cursed with limitless physical beauty, and Charles, a cynical raccoon who works as Frye's computer programmer.

Other characters include a large staff of dinosaurs; Aurora and Boyle, a couple living in a treehouse in the front yard; Glorb and Krupp, the closet monsters; and Charity O'Porpoise, a dolphin who once robbed Frye Blind and now manages her charities.

The setting
Frye's mansion, located at 86711 Prospect Boulevard (in what we would know as Fort Collins, Colorado), is such an enormous dwelling, left to Frye by an opossum who was known even during his lifetime as "crazy uncle ned", that there is no telling what one will find within its walls. Discoveries so far include a tropical forest, a shopping mall, a mad scientists' laboratory, an MC Escher room and an interdimensional portal to a world which looks strangely like Xanth.

The world
It is unclear exactly to which multiverse Room For One More belongs, though it may be a part of the Otter Island multiverse.

In the Room For One More world, all mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles are anthropomorphic and intelligent (with a few notable exceptions, such as Fnaire's autistic brother, Fnox). However, there isn't true equality between humans and nonhumans. Critter County Community College is one of the few schools in the world to have an integrated student body with humans and nonhumans equally represented. In other parts of the world, nonhumans are still treated as things, as evidenced by the story of Fnaire's mother, who after being hauled to jail for failing to give up her bus seat to a human, had to be purchased by her husband to get out.

In this world, fur is considered an acceptable covering in place of clothing. This is largely thanks to the unexplained tendency of nonhumans to revert to a G-rated state when certain body parts are not in use. Fortunately, this works for all nonhumans, including the ones without fur.

Because prejudice still abounds in the RFOM world, marriages between two different nonhuman species are accepted, but marriages between humans and nonhumans generally are not. Nevertheless, a number of human hybrids do exist, and are sure to play a big part in upcoming stories.

Related comics
Room for One More has inspired a number of spinoffs, including The Fluffles, "Webcomic U." and Castle Horsetooth.

Journey to the Bottom of the Multiverse, better known as JBM to its regular readers, is drawn by Chaos Otter and distributed by Pandora Comics. It is the story of brave explorers Steve and Wilma, who seek to find the most Kata point in the entire multiverse.

Wilma and Steve are two scientists who discover that the multiverse they live in is actually a series of parallel universes stacked along a 4th-dimensional axis, the bottom-most of which is a chaotic real with a funnel-shaped structire in the middle. They are joined on their journey by Chaos Otter, a fellow who has lived in the realm of chaos most of his life.

Steve and Wilma soon discover that matter and reality are not stable in this new realm, and as things get weirder and weirder, they also discover that they can transform into different types of animals simply by altering their behavior. This skill proves invaluable in getting past such hazards as the carnivorous roctites, demon locust and the savage Julia monsters of Benwa.

In order to insure the success of their journey, Steve and Wilma enlist the help of other locals, including Tina 4, a weasel constructed out of pillows; Biff, the strong mouse and the mysterious Enima.
Tales of the Questor is a furry webcomic by Ralph Hayes, Jr., who is also the creator of Nip and Tuck and Goblin Hollow.

The comic tells the story of Quentyn, a young 'Rac Conan Daimh' (a race of anthropomorphic raccoons) who grows up as a farmer's son in the land of the Seven Villages, a place set in pseudo-medieval times. The Rac Conan Daimh wield a power called Lux which gives them magical abilities such as telekinesis. As a result of abusing this power and misunderstandings between them and the other races in their world, the Rac Conan Daimh have isolated themselves behind a wall of impenetrable mists and swamps. Quentyn has almost no Lux power himself, which leaves him in an awkward position in his community.

Enchanted by the stories he reads of the adventuresome Questors, and disenchanted by his own potentially dismal future, he aspires to live up to the heroism of the characters he idolizes. This is not immediately welcomed by his community, as they haven't needed anyone to fill the office of Questor for well over a century. However, he receives encouragement from a magical white stag who appears to him while he is contemplating his future. Armed with a malfunctioning magic sword - the result of drunkenly stumbling into a wizard's workshop one night - he goes off in search of his future.

Assisted by the wizard Rillcreek and his friend Kestrel, he tries to figure out the nature of both his unpredictable weapon and his adventures.
