==Disclaimer==

I need to vent a little, so this is going under my user page. None of what I say here is to be considered official policy of WikiFur.

==People who don't want to be listed on a Wiki==

Since this Wiki was started, I've seen a few complaints from people who don't want to be listed on here. Here are some of the complaints we've gotten, and my feelings on them:

* '''"I don't want to be listed here, delete my entry!"''' - Sure, we ''could'' delete your entry, but there will still be links to it. It would only be a matter of time before some other well meaning person clicks on a link for your name, gets the edit screen, and writes an entry.

* '''"How dare you violate my privacy by writing about me"''' - Chances are, whatever information was put here about you was freely available via Google. If you don't wan't things about you making their way to this or other websites, then don't put them on the Internet in the first place.

* '''"Don't link to my Live Journal, that's private!"''' - If you are writing entries in your [[Live Journal]] that are public, then it is ''far'' from being private. In fact, anyone in the world can read your journal. If you really want privacy, then I suggest that you start locking down your journal entries. Don't get pissed at us because ''you'' do not understand how the web works.

* '''"Don't like to my Live Journal / Website, that's illegal!"''' - No, it's not. I suggest you read [http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,35306,00.html this article from Wired] where a judge ruled ruled that linking to other websites is not illegal. I also recommend reading the judge's ruling from the case of [http://www.gigalaw.com/library/ticketmaster-tickets-2000-03-27.html Ticketmaster Corp., et al. v. Tickets.Com, Inc.] for further details. Get a clue before you start making baseless legal threats.

* '''"There's inaccurate information here, I demand you correct/remove it!"''' - Clearly you have never used a Wiki before. See that link at the top that says "Edit"? Click it and fix the problem. Jesus.

* '''"I have a long history of being a jerk/ripping people off/being a pain in the ass. I don't want my entry to mention that"''' - I'm still undecided on this one. On one hand, I would like to see people who are jerks have it documented and pointed out so that the rest of the community knows about them. On the other hand, do we really want to call attention to people who misbehave, when our time can be spent on more productive things? For now, I think the best solution is to resolve individual issues on the talk pages of any such articles. I'd like to hear what others think on this.

To sum up my feelings, I think that really irks me is when people show up and scream about an entry that was made about them, seemingly unaware of the issues pointed out above.

Now, as for constructive solutions, we have created a template called <nowiki>{{Protected-Excluded}}</nowiki>. If there is a page about you that you would like to see removed, we can cut out the existing contents, drop that template in, and protect the page so that no one else may edit it. That will effectively prevent anything from being written about you on this Wiki.

Comments are welcome. Please leave them on this page's Talk page. If you are replying to someone else's comment, remember to use a colon (:) for each level of indenting.
:Just my 2¢: I think that "be complete" and "be bold" should be left behind at Wikipedia, in favor of "be considerate" and "be accepting." [[User:Almafeta|Almafeta]] 15:33, 24 Aug 2005 (UTC)

I disagree, we should be as complete as possible, we need to document this fandom, so when it goes in a new direction, we can keep an eye on the past. --[[User:Alohawolf|Alohawolf]] 00:11, 26 Aug 2005 (UTC)

::I agree (with [[User:Almafeta|Almafeta]] though, it doesn't hurt to be considerate. In cases where it's "I want to hide this bad thing I did in the past"... well, maybe said things shouldn't have been done in the first place. However, when it's "They're linking to my work's site" or "They posted my real life address" (or even name in some cases) I don't see why there has to be an all-or-nothing approach. I read on the discussion of the subject here that User pages may be locked so that only one person can edit them. That to me seems quite fair; maybe I do want to share my furry side with the world, yeah, but there should be a way to avoid sharing the part of my life that doesn't concern Furry, if I don't want to. --[[User:Tundu|Tundu]] 14:02, 29 Aug 2005 (CST)

I think it's dependant on if the wiki wants to be /about/ furry fandom, which would mean documenting everything, even the stuff some people don't want to be known about them or their stuff (multipule usernames, backstory in which they were a total drama magnet, etc), or /for/ furries, in which case "I don't want you writing about me" is a valid, if stupid, complaint.

I'm pretty obviously for the former. --[[Image:xaxtiny.png]][[User:Xax|?]] 19:25, 29 Aug 2005 (UTC)

A Centaur is a creature from [[Greek]] Myth, generally portrayed as a being with the full body of a large [[horse]] with the upper torso, arms and head of a human located approximately where the horses' head should have been. They were considered barbarians, but certain Centaurs, notably [[Chiron]] were viewed as unhumanly wise. Some earlier images of Centaurs show them with four human legs rather than the horsebody.

There are few mythological tales of female Centaurs, and there are other Centaurs found in different cultures. In [[Anthropomorphic]] or [[Furry fandom]], there are many variant types of Centaur, often with greater or lesser amounts of animistic appearance. In this case, Centaur becomes a more generalized term referring to a hexapedal creature possesed (usually) of two manipulative appendages and four locomotive limbs, though even this can vary significantly.
Although originally intended as an adult-only location for "herms, taurs, and <nowiki>[their]</nowiki> friends," the location has changed to a generic PG-13 place where there is rarely a herm or taur in sight.

The theme is generially archaic, although how it is archaic varies: English, American, French, and Japanese features are freely combined in the descriptions. Although it was once the most popular location on SPR, it has now been replaced once more by [[Knuth Park]].

==In-setting background==
The 'setting' of the Flagon's Tale is an alternate-reality Earth. The building that the Tale is currently in was built as a kiln in late 19th century. The builders -- a [[beaver]] and his [[herm]] wife -- were not approved of by the community.

A few generations after the building was abandoned, it was renovated and turned into a tavern.
Since this is going unanswered in the Category talk:People section, I'm going to take this here. :>
I'd like to take initiative to start removing information that's too personal-- such as the likes and dislikes of a person, who they're friends with-- in order to make the people pages sound more informational and less like the person is advertising themselves to other possible friends or love interests. Not saying that these are bad, but inapropriate for something like this wiki, which is supposed to be an online encyclopedia.

{{Wikipedia|Otter}}

'''Otters''' are aquatic or marine [[carnivore|carnivorous]] [[mammal]]s, members of the large and diverse family [[Mustelidae]], which also includes [[weasel]]s, [[polecat]]s, [[badger (animal)|badger]]s and others. There are 13 [[species]] of otter in 7 [[genera]], with a distribution that is almost worldwide.

Otters represent a relatively small percentage of [[fursona]]s in the [[Furry Fandom|fandom]].

==Physical characteristics==
Otters have a dense layer (1,000 hairs/mm², 650,000 hairs per sq. in) of very soft underfur which, protected by their outer layer of long [[guard hair]]s, keeps them dry under water and traps a layer of air to keep them warm. Unlike most marine mammals (seals, for example, or [[whale]]s), otters do not have a layer of insulating [[blubber]], and even the marine [[sea otter]] must come ashore regularly to wash its coat in fresh water.

All otters have long, slim, streamlined bodies of extraordinary grace and flexibility, and short limbs; in most cases the paws are webbed. Most have sharp claws to grasp prey but the short-clawed otter of southern Asia has just vestigal claws, and two closely related species of African otter have no claws at all: these species live in the often muddy rivers of Africa and Asia and locate their prey by touch.

==Species==

===Northern River Otter===
The '''[[northern river otter]]''' (''Lontra canadensis'') was one of the major animals hunted and trapped for [[fur]] in North America after contact with Europeans. They are one of the most playful and active, making them a popular exhibit in zoos and aquaria, but unwelcome on agricultural land because they alter river banks for access, sliding, and defense. River otters eat a variety of fish and shellfish, as well as small land mammals and birds. They are 3 to 4 feet (1 m) in length and weigh from 10 to 30 pounds (5 to 15 kg). They were once found all over North America, but are rare or extinct in most places, although flourishing in some locations.

Otters are a protected species in some areas and some places have otter sanctuaries. These sanctuaries help sick and hurt otters to recover.

===Sea Otter===
The '''[[sea otter]]''' ''Enhydra lutris'' is found along the Pacific coast of North America. Their historic range included shallow waters of the Bering Strait and Kamchatka, and as far south as Japan. Sea otters have 1 million hairs per square inch of skin, a rich fur for which they were hunted almost to extinction. By the time they were protected under the 1911 Fur Seal Treaty, there were so few sea otters left that the fur trade had become unprofitable.

They eat shellfish and other invertebrates, and are frequently observed using rocks as crude tools to smash open shells. They are 2.5 to 6 feet (1 to 2 m) in length and weigh 25 to 60 pounds (30 kg). Although once near extinction, they have begun to spread again starting from the California coast.

===Maxwell's Otter===
A sub-species otter ''Lutrogale perspicillata maxwelli'' (Maxwell's otter - named after British naturalist Gavin Maxwell) is thought to have lived in the Tigris-Euphrates alluvial salt marsh of Iraq. It has been suggested that this may have become extinct as a result of the large scale drainage that has taken place since the 1960s.

===[[European Otter]]s===
Otters are also found in Europe. In the [[United Kingdom]] they were common as recently as the 1950s, but are now rare due to the former use of chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides and as a result of habitat loss. Numbers reached a low point in the 1980s, but with the aid of a number of initiatives, by 1999 numbers were estimated to have recovered to just below 1,000 animals. Under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan it is hoped that by 2010 the otter will have been reintroduced to all the UK rivers and coastal areas that it inhabited in 1960. [[Roadkill]] deaths are now one of the significant threats to their reintroduction.
If both are publicly used, write the nickname and use a redirect (<nowiki>#REDIRECT [[NickName]]</nowiki> on its own) to point the real name to it.

The language, itself, was created in 1972. It was based on Adams's experience with the Arabic language. Many furs have given themselves names based on the Lapine language.

Many of the words are uniquely adapted to the lapine existance. For example, ''narn'' means pleasant to eat, ''silflay'' means to go aboveground to eat, and ''tharn'' means to be hypnotized with fear.
Fox fursona

Xax: +cat +link to List of most popular phenotypes

The fox is a common [[fursona]] chosen by furries. This may be due to the frequent anthropomophization of the fox in literature such as in Aesop's Fables, and movies such as Disney's Robin Hood. In addition, the fox is part of popular figures of speech, such as "the fox guarding the henhouse", "crazy as a fox", "she's a fox", etc. Whatever the reason, according to [[Pounced.org]], the [[fox]] is the second [[List of most popular phenotypes|most popular phenotype]] (after the [[wolf]]).

As the fox is portrayed frequently and in a myriad of ways, this may give it broader appeal, and make it easier for people to associate with; hence, its popularity as a fursona.

In the aforementioned media, the fox is portrayed as mischevious and cunning (Aesop), or heroic (Robin Hood), but in furry fandom, the fox is such a universally popular character that it is in no way restricted to those traits. In fact, furries choosing the fox as their fursona typically fall into one of the following three categories:

'''I. Realistic''' -- Often chosen by those who desire a quiet, introspective, and perhaps shy persona. This is likely due in part from observing the mannerism of the fox in its natural habitat, and observing its quiet beauty in photographs.

'''II. Toony''' -- Although the fox is seldom portrayed as a buffoon in popular media, many furries choose to portray the fox in a silly manner. Toony fox fursuits are popular, as is playful online roleplaying. Furries may run over a fox with a steamroller, whilst chatting on [[Anthrochat]]. Furries who carry their affinity for sports over into their character would fall into this category as well.

'''III. Yiffy''' -- As with any other species, a percentage of furries wish to emphasize an adult sense of playfulness in their character, and the fox is no exception. Often foxes are chosen by those who consider themselves submissive as well.

Since the fox enjoys such widespread popularity as a fursona, occasionally multiple furries with fox fursonas will choose the same name, which causes confusion. Indeed, on popular servers with many users, a fox furry may be unable to obtain the user name of choice, and may be forced to add one or more numbers after the username to differentiate from other users. This is probably the source of the assertion that "foxes are numbered", but in reality, they are not yet identified by sequential enumeration.

Foxes, in old religions, were associated with gender changes. (For example, [[kitsune]] were traditionally depicted as being able to turn into an old man, a young woman, or a mature fox, as desired.) It may not be coincidental, then, that (according to Pounced) the fox is the most common phenotype among [[transgender]]ed furs, with almost 1 in 6 being vulpine.

Anthropomorphicism is a well-known and oft-used concept, used in ages past to provide a human face to (most oftenly) the divine. Fairly recently (from a geologic standpoint), the [[furry fandom]] has co-opted the word for their own use.

While "anthropomorphic" covers a wide ground of possible uses, (you can make anything that is not human anthropomorphic, including inanimate objects) in the fandom it is used solely for one thing: [[linking for emphasis|bipedal animals]].

Visually, there are several trends that are often used in "anthropomorphicism-lite," including, but not limited to:
* Human form
* Human mental capacity
* Animal trappings (fur, paws, [[digitigrade]] or [[unguligrade]] legs, vaguely animal sex organs)

A more proper word for "a human in animal form" (or vice versa) would be [[zoomorphic]], but most furries do not know that word even exists.
