Wow, Wiki pages are awesome because you can just put anything on them. It's just a massive blank space. :)

Hi, name's Herbius, real name is Jonathan Poncelet. I'm sixteen years old, live in the UK (south-east England, to be precise) and am currently preparing for GCSE exams in little over a month. My screen name comes partly from [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightfire James Bond: Nightfire] ([X6], after me and a couple of friends made a small group to be able to identify ourselves online) and the other half is courtesy of a friend who suggested it in order to link in with [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbie that VW Beetle from those films], after which the name just stuck. I don't have any connection to anthropomorphic cars particularly (is that even the right term?) but the name's become so common in anything I do online that it's turned into my general ID.

I very much enjoy computer gaming (specifically James Bond games, since I'm something of a Bond addict, and games by [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valve_Corporation Valve]; I won't go into my opinion right now apart from saying that, through experience, anything less than Valve-quality isn't worth me playing); what I spend most of my time on, though, is developing custom content for games so that myself and others can enjoy it. My favourite pastime is mapping for games such as Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead, and I've done a little C++ programming here and there in an attempt to learn the language, which has achieved some success. I'm also a member of the [http://no-heroes.com No Heroes] gaming group, and believe me when I say that you won't find a more inclusive or better-run group on the net.

My other hobbies include cycling, trampolining from time to time, writing and recently (thanks to WikiFur and others) drawing. I also like meeting up with friends and generally having a good time. I'm into electro/dance music such as [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simian_Mobile_Disco Simian Mobile Disco] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvin_Harris Calvin Harris], amongst some other more obscure artists who tend to turn up on albums such as [http://www.amazon.co.uk/Clubbers-Guide-Electro-Explicit/dp/B0030BIYSQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1270744428&sr=8-2 this].

----

One of the things I pride myself on is being able to understand others' points of view. I'm a predominantly scientifically-minded person, an atheist, and people like [http://www.badscience.net Ben Goldacre] make a lot of sense to me. However, everyone's human and everyone believes in something that makes sense to them: topically, while I agree that from a Western perspective Islamic extremism (I don't like the scaremongering "terrorism" connotes) poses a threat to countries like the UK and USA, I can also see why Muslims in the UK and elsewhere feel the need to protest against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, since it's their home countries (or countries home to their religions) that are being invaded. If we as Westeners were living somewhere else and found out that America and England were being invaded by foreigners to take our resources, chances are we'd be pretty angry about it, too.

In the same way, I try and understand why people with a certain point of view hold that view. Some vegetarians, for example, don't eat meat because they feel it is better for the animals to live a full life rather than be slaughtered for our consumption. I'm not a vegetarian (mainly because I'm not great with eating vegetables in general :P) but that doesn't mean that I hate vegetarians and all they stand for: the ideas are sensible and it's totally up to you as to whether you follow them or not.

What I really do hate is when a person or group of people either forces their view down your throat or puts you in gridlock so that you can't escape from it. Personally I think this is an extremely dangerous practice because it prevents people from forming their own opinions or making their own descisions, and I'll give a relatable example: whether the Devil does or does not exist. In my opinion, a perfectly legitimate argument is that one person believes that the Devil exists and is tempting people in the world to do wrong, another person believes that the Devil is the concept of the part of human nature to do evil and a third person believes that the Devil does not exist and is merely an object that humanity can blame their flaws and wrongdoings on. These are all perfectly acceptible views on the issue and I'm absolutely fine with them; where the problem comes is when the fourth person comes in and says that the Devil's primary mission is to convince people that he does not exist, and so that anyone who doesn't believe he exists is a fool who is being taken advantage of. It's the classic situation of "My view is right and everyone else is stupid"; it's putting yourself above everyone else in supposedly a higher moral position, so others feel obliged to go against what they might otherwise agree with and join one particular side of an argument. It's the absolute opposite of inclusivity and does nothing to promote understanding between people, which is why I will never have anything to do with any group or organisation that thinks this way, including religions.

==So what does all this have to do with being furry?==

Really this has just been a long introduction as to why I've turned up here. I discovered furrydom after researching what the word "furry" meant when someone posted it in a YouTube comment, and came across the WikiFur encyclopaedia. After reading up on various articles I felt there was something in the nature of the fandom that I could identify with, since I'm an animal "liker" (not quite a "lover" where they're my world and take presidence over my life, but I have a pet cat and can certainly identify with animal ways of life), and was also intrigued by the various bits and pieces of controversy surrounding the whole scene. I like how there are so many different areas of the fandom and how welcoming and inclusive it is; I can draw the art (just about, although I'm getting better); I'll give the "yiff" side a miss; I can empathise with the therian views and really like the concept, although personally I could never religiously follow it; I'm not too much of a fursuit person; I enjoy the feeling of belonging to something where you can meet people with the same interest, and overall I just find the whole thing really friendly and fascinating. I'm hoping I can bring a scientific, initially outsider viewpoint to the interpretations and help to convince all the apparent critics that, really, it's not that bad after all.
