ConFurence
ConFurence was an annual American furry convention, and the first recognized furcon in furry fandom's recorded history.

ConFurence was also the longest running annual furry event in until Eurofurence 16 was held in September 2010.

Overview
Initially headed up by two SoCal furries, fandom organizers Mark Merlino (convention chairman) and Rod O'Riley (programming), control was transferred to Darrel Exline after 10.

Starting in 1989 as a test-run called "0", it was usually held at the end of January in various venues around southern California, particularly in Orange County, where it was cheaper to book hotel space at that time of year.

ConFurence ran for a further fourteen years, reaching its zenith in 1998 (9) with over 1200 attendees. Attendance dropped sharply after this, due in varying parts to a schedule change, a change of venue (100 miles from the main Southern California population centers), competition from Further Confusion and other Furry cons, and the dot-com bust. It ended with 2003 and was succeeded by Califur in 2004.

History
The convention started as an offshoot of the traditional Sci-Fi / Fantasy / Anime model which would include a hotel at reduced group rates, a furry-specific programming track located in the general event areas of the hotel, and followed with social gatherings and room parties in the evening.

With the rise of ever-more-popular furry parties occurring at various other conventions both in the Bay Area and SoCal, at one point, Rod had the idea of "Let's put on a show." Plans for the fandom's very first convention then began.

Dr Pepper, a non-furry, but a supportive fan, coined the name. True, it wasn't a big deal, just a simple sentence: "Hey Mark, about that new convention you're thinking of, how about calling it 'Confurence'?"fact But hey, someone had to.

With the success of the first test con, plans were put into effect for an actual, organized furry gathering the following year. ConFurence was born.

Change of ownership
During the final staff meeting, Mark Merlino announced that after CF10, he would be stepping down as convention chairman. Nominations and a staff-wide vote was cast. Darrel Exline was voted in as the new head of the convention starting post-CF10. The rights to the ConFurence name were transferred from Mark to Darrel for US$1. The rights and merchandise for cons 1-10 remained Mark's property, while the name "ConFurence" and all future events after 4 April 1999 became the sole property of Darrel.

Darrel changed the administrative make-up of the convention, creating an umbrella company called Group which would be the overall entity in control of several subgroups and events: ConFurence, CritterConDiego, and ZonieCon.

A change of venue to the Burbank Hilton was announced. All three subsequent ConFurences were held there. The numbering of the conventions was altered to follow the trend set by other entities to a yearly indicator. ConFurence 13 became 2002, and similarly for the one following in 2003.

Decline
[[File:BlackSheets10-ConFurenceMailboxBooks.jpg|right|thumb|210px|Mention of ConFurence in alternative sexuality 'zine Black Sheets #10, "Bestiality and Glamour" sparked claims that CF ran an ad in a fetish magazine.]]
Depending on who you ask, what happened next to the convention is up for debate. Convention attendance continued to decline. Many debate as to the reasons why this occurred; among the debated factors were:

* Reputation - Two types of people regularly complained about ConFurence. Half complained it was too wild; the other half complained it wasn't wild enough. When Darrel Exline accepted the duties of con chair in 1999, he admitted he considered himself a Burned Fur , and Burned Fur member Hangdog began spreading the rumor that Burned Fur was "running" Confurence. When furry lifestylers started expressing reservations about attending Confurence and deciding not to attend, Burned Fur member Mitch Marmel remarked that Confurence was "surviving and thriving without them." ConFurence eventually gained a stigma as "Burnedfurence" and never recovered. Darrel Exline did not declare he wasn't a Burned Fur until 2001.

:Although the entire staff of Confurence pre-Darrel practically remained the same, except for a few new staff who came in from LASFS, the idea that the convention lost members due to Darrel's political and social affiliations remains a possibility.
* Date and venue - During 9, Rod O'Riley announced that the convention would be changing its venue to San Diego, and the date would be changing from late January to mid-April. It was at this point that Mitra, Whitefire, and others immediately began to plan a convention that would be more convenient to the Bay Area, since San Diego was distant for the majority of Californian furs to travel. This became Further Confusion.

:The change of CF's date was also a shock, as many had planned their schedules according to the January pattern. Additional bad timing came from the fact that 10 happened on Easter weekend, which many complained would make it impossible for them to travel. Later ConFurences did not occur on the holiday weekend, but attendance continued to decline. FC was a major contributing factor: they scheduled themselves in ConFurence's old January timeslot, giving the northern Californian attendees a local con that fit many people's schedules.

:In the following years, moving ConFurence north to Irvine and Burbank did nothing to improve registration. Many said that with the dropping attendance, the Burbank Hilton began to look like a "Ghost Town". The hotel had a full-fledged convention center adjacent to the main tower, large enough to handle 1000+ attendees; many people complained that the large venue made the convention seem even smaller than it was, and that running into friends and acquaintances was made more difficult in the huge space. While the actual attendance did not drop all that sharply, the venue itself made it seem that way.
* Price - The price of the convention steadily rose, and those only wanting partial or single-day memberships were met with fewer amenities and still higher prices. The idea of trying to push people into getting a full membership failed as those casual attendees who knew they would not be able to attend all 4 days would be spending much more money for a 2-day (weekend) registration. Some resorted to simply hanging out in the lobby and at room parties in people's personal hotel rooms, rather than pay for the rising price of a shrinking convention and programming track. The collapse of the economic dot-com bubble in California may also have been a factor.
* Depreciation - Following 9, the next two years witnessed a sharp increase in the number of furry fans finding out about the fandom, which led to a rise of regional Furry Conventions nationwide. Conifur Northwest, Mephit Furmeet, Furry Spring Break, Feral!, and ZonieCon (to name just a few) suddenly sprung up, and the need for furs to travel cross-country diminished.

:Whatever the case, Darrel announced that 2003 (14) would be the final ConFurence, and that the name and event, while remaining his sole property, would cease to exist and operate. In the program book, Darrel explained some of his motivations for keeping the convention alive, admitting to mistakes and things he could have done better. Debates about his chairmanship continued after the end of the ConFurence, pointing out he had allowed television crews to attend during the final year.

:The demise of ConFurence led to the almost instantaneous rise of Califur, with a similar staff to ConFurence, to be held the following year.

Mascot(s)
ConFurence's official mascot was a female marten named Sydney Fisher.

Programming
Programming at a typical con consisted of several tracks that ran simultaneously in different event rooms within the hotel. There would be a main stage/auditorium which would easily seat a few hundred people, which would be the stage for special guests, art auctions, pet auctions, fursuit contests, and the Cabaret Fur Le Dance being prime examples of main events. Also, the room would double for nightly social dances, such as the Fursuit Dance, and the ever-popular Purple Nurple Live.

Smaller rooms would hold SIG panels (Special Interest Groups), usually regarding species-specific discussion, art panels, question-and-answer sessions between attendees and special guests, and other general meet-ups.

There was a ConFurence Filk Contest every year.

Controversy
NPOV
As the furry fandom rapidly increased in fans, and with the rise of furry-specific MU*s, convention attendance rose sharply over the following years. For many, ConFurence would mark their first experience at convention-going.

By 8, the general attitude toward ConFurence was that it was a "wild party" and that things got out of control at times. Rumors flew around, depending on who said them and who believed them, of strange and funky occurrences amongst guestsfact. This ranged from two reports of semen found in elevators, guests running about in revealing clothing (one report involved an attendee wearing a Dixie cups in a lewd manner, though Gary Burke attempted to debunk the report that it was actually a Dixie cup ), wild room parties where increasingly unthinkable acts were occurringfact, and an increasingly offbeat programming trackfact, including a live "slave" auction, later renamed the pet auction: a re-creation of a pastime on several MUCKs such as FurryMUCK and Tapestries.fact

Other accusations include the owners' alleged attempts at increasing con attendance by offering "Free memberships to FurryMUCK members". fact Mark's own words on the subject put a bit of perspective on the issue: "That would be totally stupid! It wouldn't be a practical business move. And yes, ConFurence was a business. I would lose money. Plus, how on earth would I know if it's really them? It's absurd!" fact

The FurryMUCK rumor was likely started due to a misunderstanding the special badges for online personas that were given out at Confurence 3. As noted in the ConFurence Progress Report #3 in the January 1992 issue of In-Fur-Nation: "FurryMUCK participants (And other virtual/network personalities): Be sure to pick up your 'Hi, I'm Virtually _____' badges at Registration -- If you're daring :>"

ConFurence
ConFurence was an annual American furry convention, the first major furry convention to ever exist and generally considered to be what started the modern furry community as we know it.

Overview
Apart from being the first furcon in furry fandom's recorded history, it was the longest running annual furry event in until Eurofurence 16 was held in September 2010.

ConFurence
ConFurence was an annual American furry convention and the first major furry convention to ever exist.

Overview
Apart from being the first furcon in furry fandom's recorded history, it was the longest running annual furry event in until Eurofurence 16 was held in September 2010.

Controversy

History of Lulz.net

2026-10-23T23:27:58Z

Wolfmanfur: /* Final shutdown */

The following covers the history and controversies of the image board Lulz.net.

2006 server move
On July 25, 2006, in preparation to moving the site to a new server, WTFur's splash page was replaced by cho0b with a fake notice from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, National Security Agency, MPAA, and the RIAA, "informing" the viewer that:

With the addition that their IP has been logged, and to:

Clicking on "Piracy Doesn't Pay" lead to a placeholder image board on the server (/temp/,) with the title /pedofur/. Finally, until the move was completed, all hosted images were archived in a single RAR image, and uploaded to the The Pirate Bay, a BitTorrent tracker.

The original "takedown" image can be found at Vxbinaca.beevomit.org, under the section "7/24/06 FBI Takedown joke page."

Relocation changes
The board re-appeared on August 25, 2006 as "Lulz.net." A European server was also chosen due to more lax copyright rules overseas, which meant that what little of a DNP copyright protection "WTFur" had could now be completely disregarded.

Controversy
Single board approach
Many visitors to Lulz take issue with the board's "hands-off" approach to posting and moderation, allowing all manner of media content (PG to X, straight, gay, vore, scat, cub art, etc...) to be posted mixed, side-by-side on the site's single board.

Though controversial, the moderators defend this choice by reasoning that it will expose users to art or artists they would not have seen otherwise, and that because users are prone to complain about posts in categories no matter how finely they are divided, dealing with those complaints in a single board only saves the moderation team a great deal of time. And so, any future requests by users to subdivide the content of the board into smaller categories, will, as stated before (see "Policies and content",) be ignored.

Moderators' actions/inactions
Furthermore, there have been accusations of the moderating staff standing idly by in the past as a direct result of these policies, when threads have been posted that users object to, but do not necessarily break any of the site's rules, or the moderation team is slow to remove spam or invasion posts from the page. Though there have been requests by a small group of users to take down threads featuring cub or commercial work, such as work by Palcomix, the moderation team does not appear to remove such material.

Cub art
When questioned in particular about 'cub porn' and the policy on the site of such material after one of many such threads caught the eye of CrushYiffDestroy, the moderators of the site responded with the following:

These policies have been in place since Lulz's inception, and, for better or worse, remain unchanged to this day.

Admin split, board shutdown
On November 30, 2006, Arcturus cut-off cho0b's access to the WTFur server, under the assumption he had given mod password access to the /furi/ board to what was thought to be "many random people." The act was largely considered damage control by the moderation team at the time, as the new user or users with this password deleted the bans in place on the page for posters of kiddie porn, bestiality and guro, and immediately afterwards banned several of the more frequent tripcode-using users.fact

cho0b, confused as to why he could not login to any of his sites, redirected the Lulz.net domain name. That night, Arcturus purchased the domain name Sidechan.net, and setup the DNS to point it at what was currently lulz.net, transferring all of the content from it to the new site, while deleting all data owned by cho0b hosted on his server for the websites WTFux.org, digital-jihad.net, w-t-c.info, 4-20.info, and a few others.fact

After cho0b inquired about the reason he did all this, Arcturus responded that it was because "You fucked with me."

Sidechan gets hacked
Only a week before Sidechan went down, cho0b (using the pseudonym jihad) said the following to Arcturus at the end of a lengthy discussion:

[jihad] i mean it might be good to think it over, you might be a bit steamed up right now
[jihad] don't want to make any rash decisions :)
[Arcturus] Is that a threat?
[jihad] why would i need to threaten you?
[jihad] it's not like i have all your information or anything like that

On January 7th, 2007, Sidechan was hacked by someone posting by the name "jihad" (believed to be cho0b), and all of the boards were wiped clean of their content, with an advertisement for lulz.net popping up on /furi/ before sidechan went down completely.

2007 (back on line)
Lulz came back on line the same day Sidechan was hacked in January 2007. The set-up is still a single board approach and a lack of a DNP.

The front-page sported a temporary photoshopped version of the Sidechan logo, with name changed to "lulz.net" (using the Disney font,) and sidechan's mascot Downsy "head-fisting" the persona of 4chan's moot.

Additional changes (3/22/07 - 5/31/07)
*sticky threads finally implemented
*management panel totally reworked
*collapsed threads stay collapsed when you leave the page and come back
*janitor panel reworked (janitors cannot ban or sticky/unsticky threads; can delete posts/images)
*added choice to return to the current thread or go back to the main thread list after posting

*mods can now close a thread so that it cannot be posted to
*Sexyfur.com/Jeremy Bernal media posting ban
*Lulz.css style sheet completely revamped
*Post form reworked
*Collapsible threads implemented
*Original post thumbnail larger than reply thumbnails
*Added working janitor moderation panel
*A "Dramawiki" is implemented. Its intended use is to create articles relevant to furry dramas threads originating on the site.

Onta's DMCA notifications and DreamHost cancellation of services
On March 9th 2011, Lulz.net host (DreamHost) banned the Lulz domains from their servers due to several DMCA notes. It was confirmed later on that these notes were submitted by Onta

Lulz would later come back online an unspecified date, but before or around April 21th.

Final shutdown
Activity on the website would slowly fizzle out in 2025 and by September 15th the server became unreachable and would remain so to this day.

It is not clear what happened as that shutdown was sudden, unexpected, and there were no announcements beforehand. Multiple factors may have played into the website's shutdown.

Policies and content
This board does not feature a Do Not Post list, though polite takedown requests from said people are usually heeded (impolite or impatient takedown requests from artists are often disregarded). However, due to pressure from furry artist Jeremy Bernal, who has filed repeated DMCA takedown notices for WTFur,fact posting of his art or other media from Sexyfur.com is considered a bannable offense.

As it was with WTFux, its main furry directory image is a singular topical board called /furi/. This allows all manner of media topics to be displayed, ranging from clean art to adult material, to straight to gay sexual content, to vore, scat and cub art, all posted side-by-side, in additon of various shock images, often not related to furry or zoophilia.

Because of this, there have been several requests by users to subdivide this master board into smaller categories, using a model similar to other imageboards such as Fchan. The official stance of the moderation team is that requests of this nature will be ignored, and when questioned about this decision, ex-moderator Mellis responded:

Problems with the page
Hello, I would like to point a couple of problems I have with that page:

-This page isn't representing the whole community of the furries in Israel, but only a specific branch which is called Israeli Furs/ILFurs.

-This page isn't Wikified, and needs to have significant changes.

-This page is full of irrelevant information, but lacks lots of important information at the same time.

-This page isn't neutral or even objective in any way, and is completely disputable.

I'm attaching the application to Spirou: User_talk:Spirou

This is a group union page, not a community page. Therefore, any attempt to represent all of the community of Israel is wrong and can lead to discriminating other Furry groups in Israel.
Catwell (talk) 08:52, 5 May 2025 (EDT)

There’s an improvement
The page looks much more representative, more clean, and more wikified .Good job. It will be enough, for now.
:The article needs more edits still, my edit plate is overflowing, so I can only do minor edits moving forward. The main issue is duplication, too much redundant info and internal links, so it will take a bit to finish it "completely" (as "complete' as living document can get). - Spirou (talk) 01:21, 6 May 2025 (EDT)

Clarification Regarding the Israeli Furs Article
In the interest of transparency and proper editorial process on the Israeli Furs page, the following points are offered to clarify the situation and community history:

1. Prior Community Consensus
Before the recent updates I made, there was an established consensus within the community that Kovuah and Steps the Raccoon would serve as the primary editors of the page. This decision was based on longstanding trust granted to them by many in the Israeli furry community, in recognition of their consistent involvement in both historical documentation and wikifur pages' content editing.

2. Communication with Catwell
Catwell was informed of this consensus and was asked by Kovu not to restructure the article. However, it was also explicitly offered that he could submit neutral wording to include his group(s) within the article. Rather than collaborate on phrasing, he chose not to provide text and eventually removed information about his own group of his own volition. Nobody restricted him from inclusion, only that changes should preserve a neutral tone and respect the broader community’s legacy.

3. Respecting Collective History
The page is not the "property" of any one group. However, there is a shared expectation among the general community that the article should preserve the collective legacy of the Israeli furry fandom. The aggressive removal or rewriting of legacy content based on subjective interpretations undermines those expectations.

4. Willingness to Collaborate
All relevant community groups are welcome to be listed, provided their descriptions are written in a neutral, factual, and respectful manner, and do not alter or erase the broader legacy of the community.

The page has been edited to further emphasize this statement beyond Catwells personal subjective feelinsigng to this. - Jazzing

Removal of Furry Fellas a 2nd time out of Catwells own volition
The curator will be consulted on this, since this page discusses the general local fandom, this will be be put into a discussion with the curator.
The article can't indulge Catwells on and off whims each time he feels he wanna be removed and then readded only to "fix" everything in his image.

Request for removal and exclusion
Hello,

I would like to formally request the full removal of all references to me from the “Israeli Furs” article, as previously done and later re-added without my consent. I am no longer part of the ILFurs community, and I’ve had no involvement with it for nearly two years.

Furthermore, I strongly object to being portrayed — directly or indirectly — as part of this article, or to having any group I’m part of represented by it. The group I currently belong to (Furry Fellas) is a completely separate community and has no connection to ILFurs, its admins, or the group discussed in this article.

There is no single, unified furry community in Israel. Any claim or implication that there is one centralized group is factually incorrect. Several independent groups exist, including ones that may use similar names, such as “Israeli Furs”, “ILFurs”, “Israeli Furries”, and “IL FurMeets”, but they are not affiliated with each other and should not be treated as such.

I therefore ask the following:
1. That this article only represents the specific group it is currently about, and that does not claim to represent the entire Israeli furry community.
2. That other groups using similar names be given their own separate articles, titled according to their group name, platform, and launch year (e.g. Israeli Furries (Telegram, 2021) ).
3. That my personal involvement and identity be fully excluded from this article in accordance with WikiFur’s Personal Exclusion Policy.
4. These editors refrain from generalizing about “the Israeli furry fandom” as if it is one entity — unless consensus among the current groups is established, which is not the case.

I have parted ways with ILFurs and its leadership due to mutual distrust and ongoing conflicts, and I ask that my separation from them be fully respected on this platform.

Thank you for your attention, and I am willing to verify my identity if necessary.

Follow-up Statement regarding “Israeli Furs” article
I would like to provide further personal context regarding my request for full exclusion from the “Israeli Furs” article and my concerns about how it is currently being managed.

From my experience, the administrators of the ILFurs group — particularly Jazzing and Arnavichii — have shown authoritarian, possessive, and exclusionary behavior regarding edits to this article. They treat the page as their own property, despite it supposedly being a neutral and open representation of the Israeli furry community.

When I was new to the community, Jazzing told me not to “touch the article if I don’t want problems.” When I asked why, he simply said, “Just don’t touch it.” I no longer have records of that conversation, as I deleted our chats after deciding to cut ties with him for personal and emotional well-being.

On another occasion, related to a Wikipedia mention of the Israeli furry community (at a time when I was still part of ILFurs), Jazzing publicly ridiculed me in front of the group, claiming I “didn’t do it properly” without explaining how, and openly shamed me. I didn’t save the conversation, but I believe it is still archived within their Telegram group.

Most seriously, after I recently made edits to the WikiFur article to clean it up and organize it better (after it had been neglected for a long time), I received the following threatening message from Arnavichii, which I have translated here in full:

⸻

“I wanted to talk and understand your perspective, like I usually do, but if this is your attitude then there’s no point.

So listen, sweetheart — you don’t get to make my staff work around the clock on the Wikipedia page while also answering me only when it suits you.

Stay away from the Wikipedia article. Leave it alone.

Your group is already listed there. Don’t make further edits — it doesn’t look good, it’s not well received, and it undermines all the work we’ve put in.

If you ruin our work again, I’ll make sure your reputation is known abroad, too.

On every platform, not just Wiki.

You’ll make my team work harder?
You’ll make community members feel afraid?
You’ll make our platforms look sloppy or disrespectful?
You’ll make fun of us?

You’ve reached a point of no return with me — after three years of me being patient with you and trying to cooperate.

You’re not getting any more cookies from me. That’s not a threat, just a promise.

And you can say whatever you want now, or as usual, delete the conversation afterward. What I’ve written is what’s going to happen if you keep going this way.”

⸻

The tone of this message speaks for itself. While he initially approached me politely, after I made it clear that I was not interested in continuing communication with him, he became aggressive and explicitly threatening.

This is not acceptable behavior in a collaborative and open environment, and it reinforces why this article cannot remain under the de facto control of individuals like this.

I urge WikiFur to take this seriously and ensure that the article is not used as a personal tool by one group to dominate or silence others within the Israeli furry community.

Thank you for your continued attention to this matter.

Wolfmanfur:

WIP
Hey there I'm wolfmanfur a cartoon fanatic and furry eccentric. I've been apart of the furry fandom since 2008 or 2009, maybe earlier. I was an active furry on Google Plus and Deviantart until it shut down and the other went to shit with its awful community. Now my oldest surviving account of being a furry is furaffinity, it dates back to 2016. I go by many names, but Wolfmanfur (current), Wolfy "Wolfer" Wolfgang (my youtube username due to forced "firstname lastname" over there) and Latex Umbreon (possible future name I reckon with) are names I wanna be addressed by. Any past name other than these I don't wanna be reminded of them, thank you.

They are listed by theme or fetish and I try to put artists closer together if they share a similar artstyle or have similar themes going on

Wolfmanfur:

Favorite artists
Fa doesn't give folks enough freedom to list or order artists I watch, heck i can't even sort favorites into folders the way i want unlike Deviantart and Pixiv which both have this feature! The favorite artists field is also limited.

They are listed by theme or fetish and I try to put artists closer together if they share a similar artstyle or have similar themes going on
