The primary character of the comic. Nicknamed '''Shay''' by her roommate. Shayla is a tomboy with a healthy libido and a free spirit. She's petite and rather flat, which is used for comedic effect on occasion (she's been taken for a guy). She has a sense of humour, is crass and direct and is persued by her boss, Trevor amongst others. She's openly a swinger though she doesn't advertise that fact.

===Cindy===
Shayla's former roomate. While also a mouse, she is very flirtacious and sometimes even airheaded, doing things that make Shayla's temper break through the roof often. Their cohabitation ended in comic 44 when their apartment burned down. (Later revealed to be the result of Cindy's negligence.) Cindy is currently living with a pair of furs named Jack and Brian.

===Bealzabub===
Shayla's brother. Where Shayla is pink, this character is teal. The color differences were described as the family's heritage being from the "Painted Desert" where there are so many colors all over the place that blending in meant being unusual colors as well by evolution. This also confirmed that the colors were not dyes.

===Yuriko===
A spotted cheetah most likely. Not really a primary character, but a recurring one who has a twin sister (of a solid dark color). She and her sister share the same house and also share Bealzabub.

===Trevor===
An equine and the owner of a coffee shop that hides a porn studio in its basement. Shayla's current employer. Trevor is completely obsessed with Shayla and often offered suggestions in that regard. Trevor became Shayla's new room mate as of comic 50.

*Trevor gives Shayla a job in his coffee shop, but he also offers her fifty dollars for every time she sleeps with him. To this offer, Shayla makes a comment about a lawsuit ready to go, though she takes the job in the shop while refusing the secondary offer. Shayla later gets confused for a male by a friend she knew. This later ends with the friend getting his head stuck in a garbage disposal for delivering a very offensive insult about her in comparison to other women.
*When Shayla discovers the studio through a forgetful comment about putting a box of supplies in the basement, Shayla gets a breakdown of the offer she was given before and ends up sharing it with Cindy. Though it was put as a joke, she mentions how the paycheck breakdown would itself come to five thousand dollars a month, a sum which makes Cindy act on impulse to sign up as an amateur porn star at the studio.
*Shayla's brother comes down to visit with a motorcycle to drop off so she won't be late to work anymore. However, he arrived mainly to meet Yuriko in person and subsequently her twin sister when a lunch turns into a more personal meeting.
*Shayla's apartment burns down, forcing her and Cindy to live with Trevor. It also results in the first time we see Shayla get seriously drunk enough to pass out after making a pass at Trevor and her defensive statement to his refusal that she was not drunk.
*Bealzabub learns, much to his total shock, that both Yuriko and her twin sister are pregnant. This causes his parents to come down to give him a piece of their minds, or at least his mother intends to do that. The situation is somewhat diffused when he directs his mothers rage at his sister instead of himself through a clever mention of how her boss is also running a porn studio, a manuever his father states was a wise move and that he learned well.

The title "High Orbit" appeared as a series title in the outlaw station's programme guide. At the same time, Deal Whitley had been considering a futuristic sequel to his campus [[Wikipedia:Slice of life story|slice-of-life]] character comedy comic series ''[[Opporknockitytoons]]'', so the idea of connecting the two series seemed a natural to [[Steve Gallacci|Albedo's editor]]. Thus ''High Orbit'' is supposedly a story within a story, a science fiction soap opera airing on WRAB pirate television.

The overall scenario of High Orbit is of a funny-animal Earth, just after the turn of the next century, and life in Clarke orbit. The setting is the Zenna Henderson HEO Habitory Facility, part of the USA One station. One plot thread involves an attempt to close down funding to a deep space observatory attached to a station, while a second involves the culture clash between the relatively promiscous orbital community and their more prudish terrestrial visitors. The second thread involves some amount of sex and nudity, and was the first publication of such in ''Albedo''.

At the same time, Deal Whitley had been considering a futuristic sequel to his campus [[Wikipedia:Slice of life story|slice-of-life]] character comedy comic series ''[[Opporknockitytoons]]'', so the idea of connecting the two series seemed a natural to [[Steve Gallacci|Albedo's editor]]. Thus ''High Orbit'' is supposedly a story within a story, a science fiction soap opera airing on WRAB pirate television.

The overall scenario of High Orbit is of a funny-animal Earth, just after the turn of the next century, and life in Clarke orbit. The setting is the Zenna Henderson HEO Habitory Facility, part of the USA One station. One plot thread involves an attempt to close down funding to a deep space observatory attached to a station, while a second involves the culture clash between the relatively promiscous orbital community and their more prudish terrestrial visitors. The second thread involves some amount of sex and nudity, and was the first publication of such in ''Albedo''.

The major characters are descendants of, or made their first appearance in ''[[Opporknockitytoons]]'', a fannish strip by Deal which first appeared in ''[[Rowrbrazzle]]''.

The production of ''High Orbit'' was constantly hampered by Deal's poor health, and only three issues of the comic were produced.

The first 12 page issue was inked by [[Steve Gallacci]] and ran in Albedo #6.

The second issue was ten pages in Albedo #7, inked by [[Steven Montano]].

The third issue wasn't ready in time for Albedo #8; Deal printed an apology letter and two pages of rough pencils. The ten page instalment that ran in Albedo #9 was co-scripted by [[Robert Carspecken]]. It was intended for it to be inked by Steven Montano, but published instead in pencil form.

Following customers build up Arcturus' alter ego in different ways until he manifests himself as the yet unnamed Xero.

A typical story arc involves the two being contacted by some poor bastard who has wrecked their life and want to back it out, afterward you either love, pity or hate the party. It is a common occurrence that Hunter will kill the person as they are trying to back out, but the 'Autumn' and 'Battered Woman' arcs reflect irony and change with this structure to arouse pity by the end.

After a customer who is dying from cancer is terminated, SFH finds out she was in remission and Arcturus quits to get a job at a concession stand. He quickly realizes his mistake and rejoins Hunter who presents him with armbands that had been worn by Xero and asks who left them, forcing Arcturus to name his other half and allow him free reign during their jobs.

Initially planning for the comic to serve as an excuse to say to customers everything he couldn't in real life, ''Concession'' soon evolved on its own as the characters became more than just sarcastic, satirical tools.

==== The Jansen Tribe ====

The large family of which Angie and Thonnen are a part has a very lengthy history. The family can trace its roots back to Africa, to where the modern-day dinosaur species originates.

The Jansen Tribe bases its customs off the example made by its religion, Church of the Animal Christ, which focuses on family loyalty and respect. It is an elder-based system, with the ruler of the family being the oldest female, who surrounds herself with a council of personally-chosen elders. This tradition dates back to their African roots, where tribe elders would keep control over the movement of family members, the organization and distribution of crops, etc. The tradition stands mainly as a formality in modern times, but the elders are still to be treated with great respect, and they are still to organize family meetings and make decisions regarding the family's assets.

The family owns a number of businesses, picked up through years of buying stocks and forming partnership deals. Most of the companies are owned collectively by the elder council, but a few companies are held exclusively by the elder female. Ownership passes on to the female's heir in the event of death.

One species featured in the Concession universe are known as ''Dinosaurs''. Two main characters, Thonnen and Angie, are of this race. The dinoaurs are based on the theory that ancient dinosaurs evolved into birds, with these modern equivalents having gone in reverse, thus explaining the lack of [[Avian|avians]] in Concession.

The dinosaurs are very similar to the lizards that also populate the comic's world. Their most striking visual feature are the brightly-colored feathers on the head of the females. The color of a lizard can range between green, yellow, and brown (albinism exists, and certain African tribes have, rarely, yielded blue children) with most lizards browning as they age. Various skin patterns exist, usually in the form of stripes or spots. Their feathers have more color range and have been known to be nearly any hue, though red and purple are the most common.

The dinosaurs, based on birds and lizards, have no external genitalia and only one opening that serves as both their reproductive and excretory opening: this is known as the [[Wikipedia: cloaca|cloaca]]. This, plus the lack of breasts in females (as egg-laying creatures, they don't have mammary glands), gives the creatures a very vague sexual dimorphism. The only outwardly-physical difference are the feathers, found only on females past the adult age. As children, all dinosaurs have feathers on their head, arms, and tails. These feathers are lost once puberty is hit.

The lizards of Concession are very similar to the dinosaurs in that they are egg-laying, cloacal creatures. The main differences between lizards and dinosaurs are the feathers and the skin. Lizards have scales, whereas the dinosaur's skin is rough but scaleless.

Immelmann spent three years working at a concession stand, eventually quitting out of fear of going absolutely insane. During that time, he filled a small notebook full of comical experiences that either did happen or should have happened. Initially planning for the comic to serve as an excuse to say to customers everything he couldn't in real life, ''Concession'' soon evolved on its own as the characters became more than just sarcastic, satirical tools.

The comic's world is inhabited by both [[human]]s and furries, through the former rarely appear and it is implied that the two rarely interact. Similarly, lizards and sea-dwellers tend to live separately from the furrier mammals.

==== The Jansen Tribe ====

The large family of which Angie and Thonnen are a part has a very lengthy history. The family can trace its roots back to Africa, to where the modern-day dinosaur species originates.

The Jansen Tribe bases its customs off the example made by its religion, Church of the Animal Christ, which focuses on family loyalty and respect. It is an elder-based system, with the ruler of the family being the oldest female, who surrounds herself with a council of personally-chosen elders. This tradition dates back to their African roots, where tribe elders would keep control over the movement of family members, the organization and distribution of crops, etc. The tradition stands mainly as a formality in modern times, but the elders are still to be treated with great respect, and they are still to organize family meetings and make decisions regarding the family's assets.

The family owns a number of businesses, picked up through years of buying stocks and forming partnership deals. Most of the companies are owned collectively by the elder council, but a few companies are held exclusively by the elder female. Ownership passes on to the female's heir in the event of death.

One species featured in the Concession universe are known as ''Dinosaurs''. Two main characters, Thonnen and Angie, are of this race. The dinoaurs are based on the theory that ancient dinosaurs evolved into birds, with these modern equivalents having gone in reverse, thus explaining the lack of [[Avian|avians]] in Concession.

The dinosaurs are very similar to the lizards that also populate the comic's world. Their most striking visual feature are the brightly-colored feathers on the head of the females. The color of a lizard can range between green, yellow, and brown (albinism exists, and certain African tribes have, rarely, yielded blue children) with most lizards browning as they age. Various skin patterns exist, usually in the form of stripes or spots. Their feathers have more color range and have been known to be nearly any hue, though red and purple are the most common.

The dinosaurs, based on birds and lizards, have no external genitalia and only one opening that serves as both their reproductive and excretory opening: this is known as the [[Wikipedia: cloaca|cloaca]]. This, plus the lack of breasts in females (as egg-laying creatures, they don't have mammary glands), gives the creatures a very vague sexual dimorphism. The only outwardly-physical difference are the feathers, found only on females past the adult age. As children, all dinosaurs have feathers on their head, arms, and tails. These feathers are lost once puberty is hit.

The lizards of Concession are very similar to the dinosaurs in that they are egg-laying, cloacal creatures. The main differences between lizards and dinosaurs are the feathers and the skin. Lizards have scales, whereas the dinosaur's skin is rough but scaleless.

At Anthrocon 2009, Immelmann ran an hour-long panel about ''Concession'', in which he discussed the comic's history, the nature of Joel's powers, Matt's fetish, and the comic-making process, among other things. The comic's themes of sexual tolerance have been met with some harsh criticism. Story arcs ''Smells Like Children'' and ''Metastasis, Part Three'' involved strong themes of pedophilia. During most of the arc the characters involved express extreme distaste for the subject — at one point, a lead character even gets into an argument with a true pedophile who is defending their choice of lifestyle. Immelmann spent three years working at a concession stand, eventually quitting out of fear of going absolutely insane. During that time, he filled a small notebook full of comical experiences that either did happen or should have happened. Initially planning for the comic to serve as an excuse to say to customers everything he couldn't in real life, ''Concession'' soon evolved on its own as the characters became more than just sarcastic, satirical tools.

==== The Jansen Tribe ====

The large family of which Angie and Thonnen are a part has a very lengthy history. The family can trace its roots back to Africa, to where the modern-day dinosaur species originates.

The Jansen Tribe bases its customs off the example made by its religion, Church of the Animal Christ, which focuses on family loyalty and respect. It is an elder-based system, with the ruler of the family being the oldest female, who surrounds herself with a council of personally-chosen elders. This tradition dates back to their African roots, where tribe elders would keep control over the movement of family members, the organization and distribution of crops, etc. The tradition stands mainly as a formality in modern times, but the elders are still to be treated with great respect, and they are still to organize family meetings and make decisions regarding the family's assets.

The family owns a number of businesses, picked up through years of buying stocks and forming partnership deals. Most of the companies are owned collectively by the elder council, but a few companies are held exclusively by the elder female. Ownership passes on to the female's heir in the event of death.

One species featured in the Concession universe are known as ''Dinosaurs''. Two main characters, Thonnen and Angie, are of this race. The dinoaurs are based on the theory that ancient dinosaurs evolved into birds, with these modern equivalents having gone in reverse, thus explaining the lack of [[Avian|avians]] in Concession.

The dinosaurs are very similar to the lizards that also populate the comic's world. Their most striking visual feature are the brightly-colored feathers on the head of the females. The color of a lizard can range between green, yellow, and brown (albinism exists, and certain African tribes have, rarely, yielded blue children) with most lizards browning as they age. Various skin patterns exist, usually in the form of stripes or spots. Their feathers have more color range and have been known to be nearly any hue, though red and purple are the most common.

The dinosaurs, based on birds and lizards, have no external genitalia and only one opening that serves as both their reproductive and excretory opening: this is known as the [[Wikipedia: cloaca|cloaca]]. This, plus the lack of breasts in females (as egg-laying creatures, they don't have mammary glands), gives the creatures a very vague sexual dimorphism. The only outwardly-physical difference are the feathers, found only on females past the adult age. As children, all dinosaurs have feathers on their head, arms, and tails. These feathers are lost once puberty is hit.

The lizards of Concession are very similar to the dinosaurs in that they are egg-laying, cloacal creatures. The main differences between lizards and dinosaurs are the feathers and the skin. Lizards have scales, whereas the dinosaur's skin is rough but scaleless.

This tradition dates back to their African roots, where tribe elders would keep control over the movement of family members, the organization and distribution of crops, etc. The tradition stands mainly as a formality in modern times, but the elders are still to be treated with great respect, and they are still to organize family meetings and make decisions regarding the family's assets.

The family owns a number of businesses, picked up through years of buying stocks and forming partnership deals. Most of the companies are owned collectively by the elder council, but a few companies are held exclusively by the elder female. Ownership passes on to the female's heir in the event of death.

One species featured in the Concession universe are known as ''Dinosaurs''. Two main characters, Thonnen and Angie, are of this race. The dinoaurs are based on the theory that ancient dinosaurs evolved into birds, with these modern equivalents having gone in reverse, thus explaining the lack of [[Avian|avians]] in Concession.

The dinosaurs are very similar to the lizards that also populate the comic's world. Their most striking visual feature are the brightly-colored feathers on the head of the females. The color of a lizard can range between green, yellow, and brown (albinism exists, and certain African tribes have, rarely, yielded blue children) with most lizards browning as they age. Various skin patterns exist, usually in the form of stripes or spots. Their feathers have more color range and have been known to be nearly any hue, though red and purple are the most common.

The dinosaurs, based on birds and lizards, have no external genitalia and only one opening that serves as both their reproductive and excretory opening: this is known as the [[Wikipedia: cloaca|cloaca]]. This, plus the lack of breasts in females (as egg-laying creatures, they don't have mammary glands), gives the creatures a very vague sexual dimorphism. The only outwardly-physical difference are the feathers, found only on females past the adult age. As children, all dinosaurs have feathers on their head, arms, and tails. These feathers are lost once puberty is hit.

The lizards of Concession are very similar to the dinosaurs in that they are egg-laying, cloacal creatures. The main differences between lizards and dinosaurs are the feathers and the skin. Lizards have scales, whereas the dinosaur's skin is rough but scaleless.

One species featured in the Concession universe are known as ''Dinosaurs''. Two main characters, Thonnen and Angie, are of this race. The dinoaurs are based on the theory that ancient dinosaurs evolved into birds, with these modern equivalents having gone in reverse, thus explaining the lack of [[Avian|avians]] in Concession.

The dinosaurs are very similar to the lizards that also populate the comic's world. Their most striking visual feature are the brightly-colored feathers on the head of the females. The color of a lizard can range between green, yellow, and brown (albinism exists, and certain African tribes have, rarely, yielded blue children) with most lizards browning as they age. Various skin patterns exist, usually in the form of stripes or spots. Their feathers have more color range and have been known to be nearly any hue, though red and purple are the most common.

The dinosaurs, based on birds and lizards, have no external genitalia and only one opening that serves as both their reproductive and excretory opening: this is known as the [[Wikipedia: cloaca|cloaca]]. This, plus the lack of breasts in females (as egg-laying creatures, they don't have mammary glands), creatures a very vague sexual dimorphism. The only outwardly-physical difference are the feathers, found only on females past the adult age. As children, all dinosaurs have feathers on their head, arms, and tails. These feathers are lost once puberty is hit.

The lizards of Concession are very similar to the dinosaurs in that they are egg-laying, cloacal creatures. The main differences between lizards and dinosaurs are the feathers and the skin. Lizards have scales, where the dinosaur's skin is rough but scaleless.

This arc revealed how he was kept bound in a straightjacket, was raped by a doctor or orderly, and was prematurely released thanks to his sister, Miranda. While Immelmann is normally portrayed as a wolf/rabbit hybrid, in 'At the Heart of it All' he has also been featured as a Pangolin, a Martian, and even a [[Wikipedia:Tentacle erotica|Hentai Tentacle Monster]]. At Anthrocon 2009, Immelmann ran an hour-long panel about ''Concession'', in which he discussed the comic's history, the nature of Joel's powers, Matt's fetish, and the comic-making process, among other things. The comic's themes of sexual tolerance has met with some harsh criticism. Story arcs ''Smells Like Children'' and ''Metastasis, Part Three'' involved strong themes of pedophilia. During most of the arc the characters involved express extreme distaste for the subject — at one point, a lead character even gets into an argument with a true pedophile who is defending their choice of lifestyle. The first chapter begins with Huska getting thrown into an apparent prison cell. She has a cellmate, Richard, whom she is familiar with. He refuses to share his blankets at first, so she must try to sleep on a wooden bed.

When dinner comes around, Huska attempts to snatch Richard's bowl of gruel with little success, but manages to steal his bed and blanket. He tries to work his way into the blankets with her, but she fends him off with a kick. He pounces her and ties her up in a blanket. He tries to slip off her pants, but she requests he kiss her first. They share a kiss without incident, and then he offers to untie her if she promises to follow his orders. She agrees. He distracts her and gets back into his bed with his blanket.

She wants the blanket too, so he asks her to undress and get naked. She complies, getting nude and then crawling into the blanket with him. He feigns disinterest in anything further, so she rolls over and snoozes, but soon he grasps her and pulls her into a spooning position. For a time she dreams, but soon she is awakened by him, naked and aroused. The two proceed to make love on the wooden bed, with romance apparently growing between the two.

The second volume is currently pending printing; a few preview pages are available on Fur Affinity as well. The third volume has been completed, thus finalizing the series.

* Did you notice that on page 8 of pre-production version of the comic, Richard mentions that Huska is tied up with the sheets, but that notion completely disappeared in the paper version? The key is one of the previous Richard's phrases that got changed as well. The original Russian phrase behind it could be ambiguously read in one of two ways: "I'll be fine with just ''a'' blanket", or "I'll be fine with just ''one'' blanket". The first interpretation suggests that Huska was tied with the sheets, and the second one would call for the second blanket -- in fact, the one the whole fight started over. This mistake was caught and corrected during editing.

The Darsai have a magical ability to create purple weapons of glowing fiery energy with which they fight their enemies.
They are associated with the magical elements of Fire and Steel.

===Tsung-Dao===
The Tsung-Dao have a [[reptile|reptilian]] appearance and a culture similar to feudal Japan. They seek order in the world, and worship a number of gods who were once Tsung-Dao but achieved enlightenment.
They are associated with the magical elements of Life and Steel.

===Ano-Chee===
The Ano-Chee are [[fox]]-like in appearance and have a culture similar to some Native American cultures. They worship the spirits of their ancestors, and possess the magical power to bring the dead back to life.
They are associated with the magical elements of Life and Nature.

===Nymus===
The Nymus are a [[bird]]like race, with wings on their backs with which they can glide, as well as arms. They have a culture somewhat like ancient Greece, and worship 14 gods, one for each magical element.
The Nymus are associated with the magical elements of Light and Air.

===Junlocks===
The Junlocks resemble [[wolves]] and have a culture based on ancient Gauls and Britains.
They worship the sun and the moon as their gods.
Many Junlocks have become very bitter at the hardships their people have suffered in passed wars.
The Junlocks are associated with Life and Ice.

Other races have been mentioned in passing but have yet to be described in detail.

===The Nameless Race===
Little is know about the Nameless Race. They do not resemble any recognisable animal as their bodies are entirely covered in armour and clothing which is attached to their bodies and cannot be removed, though their blood is green. The Nameless seem to be incapable of speech, though they can roar in anger or pain.
Some of them have elongated helmets, which may hide a snout, though not all have this. One has so far appeared who was massively taller then the others. The relationship between the different kinds of Nameless that have appeared has not been made clear.
The Nameless are controlled by the Fourteen Evils (only one of whom, The Speaker, has been seen so far), who in turn answer to a being known as The King in the West. The nature of The King in the West has not yet been described.
The Nameless are described as coming "from the West" which, from the map of Vellastrom, seems to imply they come from across the sea.
The Nameless are associated with the magical elements of Death and Darkness.

==Characters of Harkovast==

===Quinn-Tain===
Quinn-Tain's race is unknown, as he has yet to be seen fully, except from behind. He describes himself as being of the Wizards of Eldex, though whether this is the name of his race or an organisation of which he is a member is not yet clear.
He dresses in a red cloak and hood, wooden armour and carries two large wooden swords.
He claims to be leading the defence of Harkovast against the Nameless.

===Scatterpod===
An Ano-Chee shaman and an ally of Quinn-Tain. She wears a large headdress of multi coloured feathers and her skills in magic allow her to raise the dead, though it is not yet clear if there are any limits on her ability to do this.

===Ki===
Ki is a Nymus assassin, who was brought back to life by Scatterpod. Scatterpod thought that resurrecting him was a dangerous idea, because she considers Ki an immoral and uncontrollable killer, but she agreed to do it for Quinn-Tain.
Quinn-Tain has stated his desire for Ki to hunt down and destroy the agents of the Enemy for him.
Ki is arrogant and confident. He dresses in black, with a dark mask and sash across his body.
In battles he makes use of two sickles and small blade launchers built into his gloves.
He is said by Quinn-Tain to be a master of Dark magic. He has used this to teleport short distances.

===Sir Muir===
Sir Muir is an aging Darsai knight. He is heavily scarred, and wears damaged armour with a torn tabard. He seems to be somewhat confused, prone to losing track of what he is doing, getting distracted during battles and telling long rambling stories, which make very little sense. This is possibly due to a long journey under the hot sun that he took just before his first appearance in the comic, due to his age, or due to injuries he may have sustained. In spite of this, he has shown himself to be a skilled warrior, and very brave.

===Shogun===
Shogun is a Darsai who has decided to live his life as a Tsung-Dao, following the teachings of their religion and their culture.
He is a powerful Samurai who uses a sword called the Hidden Fang. This magical katana has a blade which disappears entirely into the handle when it is not in use.
He also has a mechanical left hand and forearm. This was built by the enigmatic Lel and is said to be impenetrable and have a 'grip that is absolute'.
Shogun has an angry manner and gets quite defensive if someone describes him as a Darsai.

===Chen-Chen===

He describes himself as a humble preacher man and claims to serve the one true God. His speech is often in the style of powerful sermons about his faith.
He has been shown to has persuasive powers, commanding an angry Junlock to drown himself (the Junlock complied) and also causing the other Junlocks to believe what he was telling them and wish to serve his god (despite The Speaker having just killed one of their friends).

'''Harkovast''' is a fantasy [[webcomic]] written and drawn by Daniel Stribley, and colored by his wife Julie.
The comic is notable for being drawn and coloured largely by hand, using pens and coloured pencils.
It is rated Mature on [[Drunk Duck]] due mainly to numerous depictions of bloody violence.
The comic is accompanied by a forum on which the authors gives additional information on the background of Harkovast.

The story is about a world known as Harkovast (from which the comic gets its name) and the wars fought by its inhabitants against a dark army from the West known as The Nameless.
Up to this point, the story has taken place on the Continent of Vellastrom.

Each nation in Harkovast is a different [[species]], each of which has its own culture and resembles a different animal.

==Nations of Harkovast==

===Darsai===
The Darsai have a [[cat]]like appearance and a culture similar to medieval Europe. They worship a war god called Thane and a healing goddess called Hevalla. They are renowned for their brave knights, who live and fight by elaborate codes of [[Wikipedia:Chivalry|chivalry]].
The Darsai have a magical ability to create purple weapons of glowing fiery energy with which they fight their enemies.
They are associated with the magical elements of Fire and Steel.

===Tsung-Dao===
The Tsung-Dao have a [[reptile|reptilian]] appearance and a culture similar to feudal Japan. They seek order in the world, and worship a number of gods who were once Tsung-Dao but achieved enlightenment.
They are associated with the magical elements of Life and Steel.

===Ano-Chee===
The Ano-Chee are [[fox]]-like in appearance and have a culture similar to some Native American cultures. They worship the spirits of their ancestors, and possess the magical power to bring the dead back to life.
They are associated with the magical elements of Life and Nature.

===Nymus===
The Nymus are a [[bird]]like race, with wings on their backs with which they can glide, as well as arms. They have a culture somewhat like ancient Greece, and worship 14 gods, one for each magical element.
The Nymus are associated with the magical elements of Light and Air.

===Junlocks===
The Junlocks resemble [[wolves]] and have a culture based on ancient Gauls and Britains.
They worship the sun and the moon as their gods.
Many Junlocks have become very bitter at the hardships their people have suffered in passed wars.
The Junlocks are associated with Life and Ice.

Other races have been mentioned in passing but have yet to be described in detail.

===The Nameless Race===
Little is know about the Nameless Race. They do not resemble any recognisable animal as their bodies are entirely covered in armour and clothing which is attached to their bodies and cannot be removed, though their blood is green. The Nameless seem to be incapable of speech, though they can roar in anger or pain.
Some of them have elongated helmets, which may hide a snout, though not all have this. One has so far appeared who was massively taller then the others. The relationship between the different kinds of Nameless that have appeared has not been made clear.
The Nameless are controlled by the Fourteen Evils (only one of whom, The Speaker, has been seen so far), who in turn answer to a being known as The King in the West. The nature of The King in the West has not yet been described.
The Nameless are described as coming "from the West" which, from the map of Vellastrom, seems to imply they come from across the sea.
The Nameless are associated with the magical elements of Death and Darkness.

==Characters of Harkovast==

===Quinn-Tain===
Quinn-Tain's race is unknown, as he has yet to be seen fully, except from behind. He describes himself as being of the Wizards of Eldex, though whether this is the name of his race or an organisation of which he is a member is not yet clear.
He dresses in a red cloak and hood, wooden armour and carries two large wooden swords.
He claims to be leading the defence of Harkovast against the Nameless.

===Scatterpod===
An Ano-Chee shaman and an ally of Quinn-Tain. She wears a large headdress of multi coloured feathers and her skills in magic allow her to raise the dead, though it is not yet clear if there are any limits on her ability to do this.

===Ki===
Ki is a Nymus assassin, who was brought back to life by Scatterpod. Scatterpod thought that resurrecting him was a dangerous idea, because she considers Ki an immoral and uncontrollable killer, but she agreed to do it for Quinn-Tain.
Quinn-Tain has stated his desire for Ki to hunt down and destroy the agents of the Enemy for him.
Ki is arrogant and confident. He dresses in black, with a dark mask and sash across his body.
In battles he makes use of two sickles and small blade launchers built into his gloves.
He is said by Quinn-Tain to be a master of Dark magic. He has used this to teleport short distances.

===Sir Muir===
Sir Muir is an aging Darsai knight. He is heavily scarred, wears damaged armour with a torn tabard. He seems to be somewhat confused, prone to losing track of what he is doing, getting distracted during battles and telling long rambling stories, which make very little sense. This is possibly due to a long journey under the hot sun that he under took just before his first appearance in the comic, or due to his age, or due to injuries he may have sustained. In spite of this, he has shown himself to be a skilled warrior, and very brave.

===Shogun===
Shogun is a Darsai who has decided to live his life as a Tsung-Dao, following the teachings of their religion and their culture.
His is a powerful Samurai who uses a sword called the Hidden Fang. This magical katana has a blade which disappears entirely into the handle when it is not in use.
He also has a mechanical left hand and forearm. This was built by the enigmatic Lel and is said to be impenetrable and have a 'grip that is absolute'.
Shogun has an angry manner and gets quite defensive if someone describes him as a Darsai.

===Chen-Chen===

== Premises ==

BF Funnies is a spin-off of the BFCC (Big Furs Community College) stories in the story archives of [[Bigfurs.com]]. At first, there wasn't a concrete storyline. It was just a series of funny Sunday Morning-style comic strips based off of various characters and their antics seen mostly around the communities of Bigfurs.com and [[Macrophile.com]]. Since gaining a bigger following, there has been more of a storyline with a few story arcs. One of the major hooks of the comic was that you never knew who to expect to show up, as the artist liked to draw the people she knew into the comics on a regular basis.
