Rowrbrazzle

Ventifax: added quote from Fred Patten. upd: #93 is coming

Rowrbrazzle (also known as Brazzle) is an amateur press association (APA) magazine devoted to funny animal cartoon illustration, that for a long time was a bulwark for furry fandom. The word is a misspelling of "rowrbazzle!", an exclamation used at times by the characters in Walt Kelly's comic-strip "Pogo".

History
Rowrbrazzle was co-created by Marc Schirmeister and John Cawley in 1983 as a result of the cessation of its predecessor, Vootie, with the first issue being distributed to its first contributors in February 1984. Fred Patten took over as an official editor five years later, and as served in this position for the last 17 years, until he had to step down in 2005 due to illness. Mike Curtis, Edd Vick, Michael Susko and others are currently serving as interim editors until a new permanent editor is found.

The first issue was distributed to the association membership in February 1984, it is still published as of July 2006 (with over 90 quarterly issues so far), and it is continuing its uninterrupted 20+ year run. Number 93 is due the Spring of 2007, in a continuing uninterrupted run of 24 years. Rowrbrazzle is always looking for new members. Furry writers and artists are invited to contact any of the interim editors.

Significance
Fred Patten, onetime editor of Rowrbrazzle, had this (biased) view of 'Brazzle's significance:
:"My thesis is that furry fandom coalesced out of sf fandom and comics fandom, blending elements from both of them and achieving its own critical mass in 1983/1984. The first clear signs of the independent furry fandom were the creation of its first apa, Rowrbrazzle, and the decision by some fans to self-publish furry comic books because there seemed to be enough fans of stories with talking animals to support them (as distinct from earlier attempts to self-publish comics which had to hope for sufficient sales from the general public alone.)
:"...
:"Rowrbrazzle started in February 1984. Since it was specifically an apa for writing and drawing funny animals as a genre and discussing the new fandom that was forming about them, it is a handy landmark to say that 'furry fandom existed at this time.'"

Gnuff

2007-04-03T05:28:22Z

Ventifax: del Wikipedia categories

Gnuff is a Danish comic book series about an anthropomorphic dragon who lives in a city with his wife Gnellie and his son Gnicky. They keep their wings hidden (they are compact enough to be concealed under their clothing) and generally try to live quietly, being considered 'outsiders' in a Carl Barks-like world of contemporary funny animals.

Gnuff first appeared in the Scandinavian fanzine Sejd (#12, 1974). Over the years, creator Freddy Milton has written and drawn many feature-length stories, resulting in a series of full-color albums, a regular Sunday-page newspaper comic strip, and appearances in Critters.

The Gnuff stories often revolve around social and environmental concerns. In an interview in Amazing Heroes #129, Milton said, "My dragons openly depict the problems of minorities. they have to conceal their old culture (their wings) to make it in our society. Also, they are a species on the decline. These are the reasons why they appeal to me."

The Adventures of Captain Jack

2007-04-03T05:17:51Z

Ventifax: upd. w/ info from endangered Wikipedia pg

The Adventures of Captain Jack is a funny animal comic book created by animator Mike Kazaleh, and published by Fantagraphics Books. It about the misadventures of a shady private starship captain, and his misfit crew.

The series was enhanced by Kazelah's smooth, animation-influenced artwork, reminiscent in style to that of Chuck Jones.

It has been collected as The Collected Captain Jack and More Collected Adventures of Captain Jack, both from MU Press.

Plot-lines
The crew's adventures have included encounters with a crazy wizard and his giant pinball machine, the farm planet of Janet's father, Herman's near-death experience (where God is shown to actually be the almighty dollar), the attempted rescue of lost astronaut Stanley Tomcat (who doesn't want to be rescued), a planet of TV-hating housewives, and more.

Cast
The comic's characters include Captain Jack, the self-assured, gray-furred cat captain of the starhip Glass Onion; Herman Feldman, crewmember dog (who actually likes "space food"); Beezlebub (sic), Herman's tiny, demonic sidekick (who is invisible to the rest of the cast); and Adam Fink, an android dog who usually gets stuck with the heavy lifting. Later, they are joined by Janet (a raccoon), a farmer's daughter who falls in love with Herman, and viceversa.

Rhudiprrt, Prince of Fur

Ventifax: upd Teri Sue Wood link, corrected name of her homesite

wikify

Rhudiprrt: Prince of Fur is a comic book created by Dwight Decker and Teri Sue Wood and published by Mu Press.

Premise
The story begins with the death of an elderly and lonely veteran, Warren Schaeffer, whose cat died soon before him. In the afterlife threshold, Warren meets a guardian spirit who tells him of his passage to Heaven, but Warren balks when he learns that his cat, as an animal, is excluded from there.

In the resulting argument, a cat goddess named Ilura intercedes and offers an alternative for Warren over the objections of the guardian spirit. Warren accepts and he is taken to the cat afterlife, where cats are reborn into a humanoid primitive civilization. The goddess takes Warren to witness the assassination of a birth defective prince Rhudiprrt. At the moment of his death, Warren is installed as the prince's body's replacement consciousness and charged with the duty of advancing the cat civilization in some undefined way.

Now, as Rhudiprrt and temporarily unable to speak, Warren must adjust to his new life and face the political intrigues he has found himself in.

Characters
Comic status
After Wood left the series with issue 6, a new artist came on board, but the lost momentum was never regained and after some behind the scenes turmoil, publication ground to a halt with issue 9. Years later, Teri Wood resumed the title on her own, writing and drawing issues 10-12. Despite poor sales Mu Press has committed to publishing a conclusion to the story in a promised graphic novel to be written and drawn by Wood. The status of this resolution project is uncertain. Wood in 2006 has announced she is for now concentrating on recovering from health problems.

Teri Sue Wood

Ventifax: same stub I put on Wikipedia. really, do I have to create all the comic artist pages in the world myself?

Teri Sue Wood, also credited as Teri Wood, Teri S. Wood, & T. S. Wood, is a comic book writer/artist. Her work includes the Amazing Heroes strip "The Cartoonist", the graphic novel Wandering Star, & Rhudiprrt, Prince of Fur.

Due to personal & health problems, she dropped out of full-time comics-creating in the late 1990's, abandoning her long-planned project Darklight after only three issues.
