Furcation has been pitched as an event for those seeking an alternative to the convention format and for those who are looking for a cheaper and more relaxing event to attend.

2016
Pricing
Tickets for Furcation 2016 started from £47.00 rising to £159.00 depending on the chalet option chosen and number of people sharing. Furcation 2016 also offered an attendance only ticket which gave unlimited access to the event for £20 for the entire weekend.

History
Furcation was originally scheduled to take place over September 11-14, 2015, at Warrens Holiday Village in Clevedon, North Somerset, England. Due to difficulties with the planned venue, the convention was cancelled for 2015 with the staff expressing the hope to put together an event for 2016.

Furcation 2016 took place over the weekend of October 14-17 2016 at the John Fowler Combe Martin Beach holiday park in Combe Martin. The event attracted 90 registered attendees . The event has received good reviews from both attendees and the venues own staff who have liked the relaxed nature of Furcation and it's balance between events and social time.

Venue
Noting a rise in the number of start-up conventions in the UK, the Furcation organisers wished to step as far away as possible from traditional furry conventions. Hence, instead of being based in a hotel, Furcation looked towards the exclusive use of a holiday camp for the duration of the event.

For 2016, Furcation was based at the Combe Martin Beach Holiday Park in North Devon owned by John Fowler Holidays.

Scotiacon (pronounced "Sko-sha-con"; previously ScotiaCon) is a UK furry convention, the first to be held in Scotland.

History
Scotiacon was originally planned to be held around Easter 2010. with ThrashWolf as chairman, Ixis as co-chair, Zenon as treasurer and Kanibal responsible for the website development. It was to be held at the Ramada Jarvis hotel, Inverness, with three ticket types - the basic attendee "MacRegular" for £55 and two enhanced options - the "MacPremium" priced at £65, and the "MacSponsor" priced at £99.

*During COVID, online game meets took place on the AberFurs official Discord, including VRChat furmeets as well as Jackbox Games nights.

Post-Covid
*November 2021 - In-Person furmeets resume after Covid-19 Lockdown ends. Skuval and Maxii join the staff team and Patches steps down to focus on university studies.

*January 2022 - Patches reintroduced in staff to assist with moderating Discord and Telegram.

*September 2022 - Meets become consistent, monthy events. A relationship is formed with local venue The White Horse and meets start taking place there.

*January 2024 - Vendetta joins the staff team. AberFurs perform a social media push, creating Twitter and Instagram accounts and adding social media links to WelshFurs to boost visibility.

*April 2024 - The White Horse cancels AberFurs' booking with less than a day of notice, ending the relationship. Meets continue to take place over the summer on the beach.

*October 2024 - Indoor furmeets restart as AberFurs find a new furmeet location at Yoko's Why Not Bar.

*Aardwolf Proteles cristata (insectivore);
*Brown hyena L. Parahyaena brunnea (scavenger);
*Spotted hyena L. Crocuta crocuta (pack predator); and
*Striped hyena Hyaena hyaena (scavenger, omnivore).

General information
Hyenas throughout history have been feared by humans. Early on, the hyenas were seen as evil manipulative animals who had the ability to imitate human speech and lure out the poor victim to later eat it. The laughing noise of the Spotted hyena was found incredibly eerie and supported the beliefs of the native Africans that they could speak human language. The Striped Hyena was believed to provide magic and healing powers through eating of their brains and wearing their fur during rituals.cn

When the hyena was discovered by various civilisations through history, scholars struggled to classify the animal. Strabo in Geographica wrote "it is not a wild beast, but rather a domesticated animal, for it shows no signs of wildness."

Also characteristic for the hyenas are their manes. However, the Spotted hyena have no significant mane but more of tuft along the neck and have slightly round-shaped ears. The Striped hyena, Brown hyena and Aardwolf make their manes erect to increase their size when frightened, scared, excited, threatened or aggressive.cn

The most-known trait of the bone-cracking hyenas (Spotted, Striped and Brown hyenas) is their incredible strong jaws that can crunch bones and glass with ease, and thus they can eat all of their prey, kill prey with an instant bite, and find tasty treats when rooting around in garbage. However, the Aardwolf is the only member of the family that neither hunts nor has the aforementioned trait. Instead it eats insects, like termites.cn

Conservation Status
Hyena conservation has been largely successful, with the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species listing the Aardwolf and the Spotted Hyena as "Least Concern" and the Brown Hyena and Striped Hyena as "Near Threatened"

Hyena facts
*Despite their apparent similarity to canines, hyenas are technically more closely related to felines, being within the suborder Feliformia.
*The Spotted hyena (L. Crocuta crocuta) is also known as the Laughing hyena and is the most common and populous species of hyena, covering most of Africa.
*Spotted hyena females are difficult to distinguish from males, due to their strikingly similar genitalia, including females' false scrotums. This has led to many anthropomorphic hyena characters who are, or are assumed to be, hermaphrodites.
*While the Striped hyena (L. Hyaena hyaena) is mainly a scavenger, it also eats small rodents, eggs, tiny lizards, fish, berries, fruit and the occasional vegetable. On the dark side, the Striped Hyena has been known of attacking young humans in India and eating them. However, it is believed that it is, just like in many other animals' cases, a lack of other edible food. Usually, the Striped Hyena is very shy and withdrawn around humans.
*The name for Hyena is pretty much the same in most languages in the world, with spelling difference of "Hiena", based om the Latin word for them (Hyaena). The exception is in India, where they are called "Hundar".
*Spotted hyenas are not good pets. Although a few people in Africa in Asia find hyena cubs in nature and raise them as pets, these animals generally appear to be extremely unhappy as adults. They must often be muzzled at all times to not harm people or property. These 'pet' hyenas can't survive in the wild, because they can't hunt. Upon reaching adulthood, many of them must therefore be euthanized.cn
*Aardwolves are the smallest members of the hyena family. Unlike the other members of the family, they do not hunt or scavenge. Instead, they feed on insects, like termites.

Hyenas in animation
*Shenzi, Banzai and Ed in the animated film The Lion King by Disney are villains and minions of Mufasa's brother Scar. They are supposed to be Spotted Hyenas but show traits of the Striped hyena (such as slanting back, long necks, visible mane and long pointed ears). The film has received criticism for comparing hyenas to a plague or a burden of nature (when Scar took over with the hyenas the land turned grey, dark, empty of food and miserable) and comparing them to Nazis (the Be Prepared marching-scene is heavily based of SS-marches that were held in the former Third Reich of Germany).cn
**There is a clan of good spotted hyenas in animated series The Lion Guard based on The Lion King. Hyenas in this clan live in the Outlands, but they respect Circle of Life. Their leader is a young female named Jasiri. One of the enemies of Kion and his team include Janja, but later reforms in the third and final season.
*In The Little Jungle Book cartoon series by Disney, a striped hyena shortly appeared in an episode escaping from a forest fire together with the other jungle creatures. It was not shown to be villainous.
*In Noah's Island, an European animation series, four hyenas lived on Noah the Polar bear's moving island. They appeared to be Striped Hyenas save for one of the cubs who had spots. They were not villains through and through but could be a bit of troublemakers and occasionally picked on the resident poodle.
*In "Simba - King of the Jungle", an Italian animated series heavily based on Disney's movies, mixing The Lion King, Jungle Book and Bambi all in one, had instead of "Tabaqui the Jackal" Tabaqui the Striped Hyena, who was cowardly, a scaredy-cat and the only one looking up to Shere Khan and was the only lackey, but lacking of courage. He made no real impact on the story, besides sucking up to Shere Khan, stuttering, getting smacked and spying on Simba and Bambi.
*Har Har from the Hanna-Barbera series Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har is a hyena.

Hyenas in comics
Hello! I've been wondering with the influx of furries moving to Bluesky (which is all over my twitter feed at the moment, I'm there as well) wether it would be worth creating a template for Bluesky? I'd create it myself but I'm unfamiliar with the syntaxing. Vendetta (talk) 07:04, 7 November 2024 (EST)

Furcation is a furry convention that takes place at Warrens Holiday Village in Clevedon, North Somerset, England.

The event attracted 90 registered attendees of which, 48 opted to Sponsor. The event raised £530 for their nominated charity, Secret World .

Aberystwyth Furs is a part of WelshFurs.

History
*AberFurs was founded initially as a Telegram chat by Zuki in early 2018, where the group existed in an online-only state until late 2019.
*The first official meet was held on November 16th 2019, with a small get together at the Aberystwyth Pier Arcade. There were three attendees.

*The second meet was held a month later, on December 14th, 2019. This included the first AberFurs fursuit walk, through the Aberystwyth Promenade. This meet had five attendees. Kitty WK and FedoraGoat joined the staff team. Small-scale furmeets continued until the 21st of March 2020, where events were suspended due to Covid-19.

During Covid
*AberFurs information was first added on the WikiFur WelshFurs page on April 23rd 2020.
