Endtown is a science fiction webcomic of furry interest created by artist Aaron Neathery.

Premise
It's the end of civilization as we know it. A pandemic of a mutagenic virus followed by a global war fought with disintegration weaponry has left much of the planet Earth a desert of fine powder and what remains of humanity fragmented into humans, animal-like mutants and bloodthirsty monstrosities with lots of teeth.

The surface, still teeming with the mutagenic agent, has become the domain of the Topsiders; well-organized, technologically advanced, and heavily armed un-mutated humans intent on exterminating mutations of any kind in order to clear the way for the eventual resurgence of a new, genetically clean humanity.

Faced with annihilation, mutants and "impure" humans have retreated to various types of shelters to form communities and hope to win, or at least survive, what may prove to be mankind's final war.

Endtown is the continuing story of one of those communities.

Backstory
In the near future, conflicts between various countries results in all of them launching a variety of weapons at each other all at once. The resulting unpredictable combination of side effects wiped out the majority of the population and turned most of the Earth's surface into a wasteland. The survivors were divided up into roughly two groups: those who became mutants (or were immune to mutations), and those not yet exposed to the mutagen. The first group, collectively known as "mutants", either roam the surface raiding city ruins for food, or live in survival bunkers. One such bunker, located a mile underground, is Endtown. The second group are the "Topsiders", highly prejudiced "pure humans" who live in an undisclosed location(s) and hunt mutants with the goal of ridding the planet of them. The Endtown story revolves around one group of mutants attempting to survive under these conditions.

The Endtowners, as they call themselves, spend most of their time in the underground city, with occasional forays to the surface to scavenge for food. Because of the effects of the post-War radiation, most protein-based foods have turned to dust, leaving only those items still in cans. At the time in which the story is set, six years after The End, cans of beans are all that remains in the ruins reachable by foot. Endtowners only have a synthetic "vitamin cake" and beans to live on. The lack of variety in their diet drives many of the Endtowners to desperation.

The mutagenics' effects do follow clear rules described by the author, though from the outside the effects appear unpredictable. Humans are often turned into monsters, though the luckier ones can become animals. Species shown so far include a Rhinoceros, several breeds of cats, mice, crabs, fish, dogs, cows and at least one worm. The more bizarre but benign mutations include a hunchback with a fish head that falls off (and presumably grows back), and the Oracle, a precognitive pool of water. There is a series of canals in Endtown to support the water supply and sewage carry-away, as well as providing the aquatic species a place to live. On the surface of the planet, the Topsiders wear sealed suits to protect them from the tainted atmosphere. If the suit is damaged, the victim begins to mutate within seconds.

In the story, Endtown is described as a form of commune where the inhabitants provide various services in return for housing and food. Most services are along the lines of working at a cafe, or acting as a doctor, police officer or main entrance gate security. Greater rewards are offered for Topside scavenging missions, but the odds of not surviving one of these missions is very high.

Topsiders hunt mutants as part of their eugenics campaign for two known reasons: to eliminate them from the planet and to put their brains into machines such as the transport vehicles, blaster guns, and robot tracking devices called "Multi-Use Terrestrial Trackers" (AKA: "mutts").

Story arcs
* A Fistful of Beans - Introduction to the universe of "Endtown". Al and a partner are topside raiding a store for supplies when the partner attempts to join the Topsider ranks, with fatal results. Al returns to Endtown by himself and must face the wrath of the mob for bringing back more beans. His friend Prof. Mallard has to step in to sell the Endtowners on the benefits of the hated legume.
* Gustine's Quest - Gustine suffers from the fear that she will turn feral as a rampaging 700-pound rhino, and asks an oracle for advice. This results in her and her partner, Al, traveling to the ruins of Hillside City to obtain the fruit of a tree that can solve her problems. Along the way, they befriend Petey and run afoul of the pixel creatures (AKA: Dittos) that have been tormenting Sparkplug Sanders.

:While fighting Sparkplug, Al needs to rescue Gustine and is killed in the process. Gustine then uses the fruit to save Al, and thus is satisfied in staying as she is. On the way back to Endtown, Gustine, Al and Petey are attacked by Topsiders. Petey is left behind, and Al and Gustine are set up to look like spies leading the Topsiders to Endtown.

:This leads to an investigation by Capt. Flask intended to find the two as traitors. However, a second trip to the surface reunites Flask and Petey with the revelation that the two used to be partners before Petey was turned into a truck. The arc ends with Petey getting a new body, Al and Gustine being declared innocent, and Flask brooding on her sins.
* The Ballad of Holly and Wally - Wally is a rambling man-cat satisfied with fending for himself in the wastes of Topside. An encounter with Topsiders changes his life and ultimately he is forced to enter Endtown, where he is jumped by two inhabitants hoping to steal any fresh food that he may be carrying. Left with a cerebral contusion, Wally is brought to a hospital by Holly, a mouse waitress who is the only one in Endtown willing to stand by his side. Wally is conflicted about being a human trapped in a cat body and Holly attempts to help him come to terms with his instincts. They find themselves attracted to each other at the end.
* Countdown - The Topsiders build a rocket near Endtown to launch a spy satellite. Knowing that an "eye in the sky" would spell certain doom for the Endtowners, Security Chief Flask assembles a small suicide squad consisting of herself, Petey and wildcard Wally, to sabotage the rocket. However, things get complicated and Flask ends up hijacking a flying ship to crash it into the Topsider outpost instead.

Characters
Humans
* Albert Anderson - A tall, lean, lanky black-haired male. Al is one of the few people to have kept his human form after being exposed to the mutagen. He starts out as the main lead in the story, scavenging one of the ruins for food. He lives with Gustine, and is friends with Professor Mallard. Al is resourceful and a quick thinker.
* Sam "Sparkplug" Sanders - Formerly an engineer working for Apex Industries in Hillside. He's the one that realized that Amesworth Radiation had military capabilities. He also refused to proceed on the work any further and was removed from the project. He then focused on finding a way to make himself and his family immune to the radiation. Unfortunately, he was a little too late, having bombarded himself with some kind of energy just before his partner, Agnes, and their daughter, April, were mutated. He is shown having killed the monster Agnes had become, after she had eaten April. He's then essentially immortal following The End, living alone in Hillside, being tormented by the "dittos" which keep replaying his memories for him every night. Sparkplug is last seen falling from a building several hundred feet up and is presumably killed by the impact.
* Petey - A Human brain that had been "wiped" and wired into a Topsider transport vehicle. Initially, he was pretty satisfied with being a truck. He was given his name by Al, derived from "Personnel Transport" (PT). He has virtually no memories of his past life, but he does at least recognize "Blackie", and was eventually put into Professor Mallard's robot to be taken to Endtown. He is currently insanely strong, and can fly using his "hat" and wheel "propellers". When told that Flask was going to wipe out an entire Topsider colony as a "gift" for him, Petey balks at the idea of killing young children and noncombatants, even if they are the enemy. Rather than bonding in any way with Flask, Petey has fallen in love with another Transport.
* Aaron Marx _ Has been described in email conversations with Neathery as being his Tom Bombadil character. So far, very little is known about Marx beyond that he travels in a ship dangling from a balloon, salvaging scrap from the surface. He can walk on air using "string theory", "has no need for sleep" and is able to exert control over dittos. He appears to be an unmutated human wearing 1800's formal wear and spats.

Mutants
* Gustine Greene - A 700 pound rhinoceros suffering from schism syndrome. Because she has not yet adjusted to being a rhino with poor eyesight and little patience, Gustine consults an oracle for advice on how to turn back human. She is then given a quest to go to Hillside for the fruit of a plant that supposedly has mystic properties. At the end of the arc, she remains a rhino. In a flashback (2009-05-19 strip) she is shown to have been a short, stocky black woman prior to The End.
* Professor Nikolai Xavier (N.X.) Mallard, Ph.D - duck and the resident mad scientist responsible for keeping Endtown running and for creating the hand-cranked blasters used by the Endtowners to protect themselves Topside.
* Capt. Philomena (Blackie) Flask - Flask is a humanoid size cat that started as the chief of Endtown security in the series. She is ruthless, unforgiving, and driven by nightmares of her life prior to coming to Endtown. In the 01/18/12 strip, she is identified as the ex-chief architect of the Topsider's spy satellite rocket project, making her a former Topsider and engineer/scientist. She was killed by an exploding gun, and reawakened in an intermediate state where she was relocated by Marx in the 2012-8-16 strip. Flask revealed to Marx that Petey was formerly a mostly-human man who was being experimented upon by Topsiders before she secretly freed him; the two fell in love and she resolved to take off her biosuit (she had been disgusted of remaining a Topsider), joining Petey outside and allowing him to puncture her suit while she slept. When she woke and had taken off her helmet, Petey had disappeared, and Flask was found and taken captive by Topsiders who then tortured and surgically removed her tail. In response, she injected her captors with the Mutagenic virus, turning them into monsters while she escaped. She applied for the job of Endtown security chief, and she ultimately found Petey's brain, finding out that Petey had been taken captive by the Topsiders and stripped of his body (Neither her nor Petey's prior faces have been shown as of yet). After telling her story, Marx restores her tail and removes the "cancer" of her torture.
* Jacob (Jake) Jackrabbit - A reporter for the Endtown newspaper, is also the leader of an anti-human association. His fear and loathing of humans (mutated or not) mirrors that of the Topsiders towards anthros. Jake holds "self-acceptance seminars" which are really recruiting sessions for his lynch mob. In Jake's association, changing one's last name to that of one's anthro type shows that you've come to terms with being an anthro.
* Wally Wallechinsky - A cat suffering from schism syndrome living in the ruins Topside, with something of a death wish. He tries to keep to himself, but is forced into coming to Endtown, where he gets jumped by two mutants desperate to get whatever food he brought from the surface. Hospitalized with a cerebral contusion, he is tended by Doc Chase and Holly, and relieved of his syndrome symptoms by Holly. The two of them fall in love. In a flashback starting with the March 28, 2012, strip, we learn that Wally had been an engineer with Apex, designing schools in the battle zone bordering Hillside, and that all Apex employees eventually carry a gun in the field as soldiers.
* Holly Hollister - A 30-year old female mouse working as a waitress at an Endtown cafe. She unexpectedly finds herself being responsible for helping Wally after he gets hospitalized. Holly is a fast runner and fully adapted to her life as a mutant ("after having discovered the joys of Camembert"). She helps Wally adjust to being a cat, and the two of them fall in love. She then follows Wally Topside for the mission in the "Countdown" arc.
* Linda Kowalski - A Human female Topsider team leader of Beta 51 that eventually mutates in to a koala. Little is known about her personal life yet, other than that she has a son (living in Pine Valley, Dome 3). She had been partnered with "Doug", a 17-year-old Topsider that had been blasted by Flask. Flask then proceeded to attempt to torture her by puncturing a weak spot near the ear protector of her suit to turn her into a rampaging monster to kill. However Wally stunned Linda in time, allowing her to mutate, unconscious (thus supporting "Cooper's Rule" that unconscious people turn into anthros) into a koala. Linda was unaware that the rocket she and Doug were guarding was a fake.
* Jim - A former Human male topsider that voluntarily became a mutant (Raccoon) willingly to save his life partner, Sarah.
* Sarah Battle - A former Human female topsider that voluntarily became a mutant (Reptile) to use the the mutants accelerated healing power to cure her of Cancer.

Monsters
Monsters range from what appear to be pools of goo, to things like a big octopus and really large hungry shapes. To date, only one type of monster has been identified by name.

* Dittos or pixel monsters - Microscopic creatures that act like semi-intelligent monitor pixels. When millions of them work together, they are capable of displaying any image they want as either an illusion, a mirage or a hallucination. Images can be of other monsters, vehicles, people or of simple, vast open space. As shown in the Gustine quest arc, dittos live in "nests", and are susceptible to raygun blasts. As shown in the flashback sequence with Sparkplug Sanders, dittos can read people's memories and play them back in full 3-D. So far, they have not demonstrated the ability to produce sound. Topsider Personnel Transporters identify them as "vermin" and have protection systems in place for killing them.

Locations
So far, the Endown story has taken place primarily around the Endtown bunker, meaning that little is known about the rest of the planet. There are essentially 5 locations or entities that have been highlighted as of April 4, 2012.

* Endtown - One of many mutant outposts that have sprung up following The End. It is a bunker 1 mile underground, with at least one entrance elevator somewhere in the unmarked Great Waste.

* The Great Waste (AKA: Topside.) _ These are the dust-filled barren lands that cover the planet, at least in the area around Endtown. "Topside" is the term used by Endtowners to distinguish activities outside of the bunker. We have not yet been told what the Topsiders call themselves, or what they call the areas outside of their own colonies. There are various ruins scattered across The Great Waste containing intact buildings and/or roads.
* Hillside - Hillside was actually one large country sprawling across this part of the continent. Endtown is located within the Hillside boundaries. When the number of spontaneous mutations started escalating, all warring countries accused the others of being the source cause and launched their weapons at each other, triggering The End. Sparkplug Sanders was living in one of the suburbs of Hillside that had remained relatively intact after The End. The 2010-01-21 strip shows that one of Hillside's opponents was the Eastern Alliance.
* Bordavia - Bordavia was a warzone neighboring Hillside. Wally Wallechinsky was an engineer working for Apex Industries stationed in Bordavia prior to The End, helping design new schools. He was also assigned as a soldier to patrol the area with other members of his group.
* Apex Industries - A multinational conglomeration with factories in Hillside. Their logo was a triangle with a small circle inside, and their slogan was "Apex, making the world safe". Sparkplug Sanders worked for Apex as a researcher and was the one to harness Amesworth Radiation for use in blasters, disintegrators and Zero Bombs. Wally Wallenchinsky also worked for them as an engineer designing new schools in Bordavia. Apex drones fighting "rebels" then destroyed the school for Wally to rebuild. Apex also produced the large-scale disintegrators used at Pep Cola stadium for "cleansing" the sporadic mutations that surfaced in Hillside leading up to The End. The field suits used by Wally and his fellow soldiers in Bordavia are similar to those used now by Topsiders, and the Apex logo closely resembles that of the Topsiders' reversed triangle inside a large circle. Part of Sparkplug Sander's flashback takes place in the Apex offices in Hillside.

Weapons
Although the warring countries at The End used many different kinds of weapons, only two have been described in the story so far.

Amesworth Radiation, a form of radiation harnessed by the inventor Sam Sanders for Apex Industries. Amesworth radiation is used in ray guns and disintegration beamers. As mentioned in the comic, if the radiation is strong enough it will disintegrate anything. At lower levels it only affects organic matter. (Twinkies are thus identified as inorganic). It is named after its discoverer - Dr. Eden Amesworth, who Sanders may have actually met at one time.

The Mutagenic Virus has not been explained in any detail so far and may not actually be a virus. This is the thing that turns humans into mutants, and is present throughout the planet. Generally it is referred as "the mutagens". It's questionable as to whether the mutagens were initially intended as a weapon, or if it was accidentally leaked from somewhere. If a human is unconscious when exposed to the mutagens, they turn into an anthro. If awake, they morph into a monster.
Threyon is a chocolate-brown feline anthro who likes to chat and draw.

He became fascinated with the subject of furry art after joining FurryMUCK, and has been slowly improving his drawing skills. Threyon also founded and maintains the Furry Skypers community on LiveJournal, a place for furs who use the Skype instant message and voice chat program.
Character
The character Threyon was first created in January of 2004 on FurryMUCK, usually appearing in the form of a small anthro feline and has a penchant for females with large breasts. Though childlike in appearance, he is most assuredly an adult, though he has been known to take advantage of this, especially around females with maternal inclinations or those with an affinity for cuteness. He is also known as Threyon Plasma on Second Life and has accumulated many characters on the MMORPG World of Warcraft. He can usually be found on the Doomed Kitties guild on the US server Zul'jin, along with his guildmates David Koppenhaver and Drake Fenwick of The Brothers Grinn.

Second Life is an online virtual world consisting of hundreds of interconnected large-scale areas populated by interactive avatars, whose players may choose to take any form they can create or purchase. The major form of short-distance transportation is flight, while transportation between areas is typically performed through teleportation; both abilities are innate. The "main grid" is restricted to those 18 or over, as some regions contain strong violence or sexual content. A teen version for those 13 to 17 is also available.

Second Life has over 642,000 registered users and 282,000 active users as of September 8, 2006; logged-in users range from 3,000 to 8,000 at any one time. The system is funded through a combination of account subscriptions and "tier" (a form of land value tax). Users have the option to own or rent land parcels in a variety of sizes - as in real life, some owners may zone their land to restrict certain activities, such as commercial development. Business in the game's virtual currency (exchangeable for real-world funds) is encouraged by the Linden Research, and a variety of content vendors have sprung up to meet demand.

The furry fandom has a major presence in Second Life, with multiple areas devoted to providing accommodation, entertainment and creative services specifically for members of the furry community. Themes range from the pedestrian to the bizarre, although trees are common in furry haunts. Each user can create their own objects from the inbuilt primitives, but the majority of users rely in part on objects created and sold by others. These include body parts for avatars, accessories, vehicles (which may be purely aesthetic or provide extra functionality), toys, pose balls for avatar animation, and scripts to provide extra features (like "push" and "shield" defensive/offensive capabilities).

On September 8th 2006, Linden Lab reported via a security bulletin (which was also emailed to all SL users) that the servers holding player account information had been attacked using a zero-day exploit. According to Linden Labs, this attack on the servers may have begun as early as September 3rd and they only noticed an increase in activity on the 6th which they then quickly locked out. Their investigation showed that the attack allowed a significant amount of customer account information to be downloaded such as credit card numbers, PayPal transaction ID's, real life names, Second Life names, account passwords, and contact information.

As part of their effort to improve the security of their servers, Linden Lab had invalidated the passwords (assuming they were already compromised) of all Second Life users and has required said users to reset their passwords. Linden Lab further mentioned that while the compromised payment information was encrypted, no encryption is unbreakable given enough time and computing power. They had thus stated that if any SL user believed themselves to be the victim of credit card fraud, they (the user) should contact their credit card company.
Outline
Second Life was started in 2003 as a project by "Linden Research, Inc." doing business as "Linden Lab".
Second Life's primary attraction has always been the level of customization; from the ground under your feet to the clouds in the sky. This was quite literal since the game's developers intended for the user to be able to create the world to their desire, as is quoted in the Second Life overview on its site:

:"Second Life is a virtual world - a 3D online persistent space totally created and evolved by its users. Within this vast and rapidly expanding place, you can do, create or become just about anything you can imagine. Built-in content creation tools let you make almost anything you can imagine, in real time and in collaboration with others."

Second Life is considered by some to be a variant of the Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, or MMORPG for short. The true answer to the question "is it such a game?" is "yes and no" - Second Life is technically not a role-playing game by itself.
Also, unlike other role playing games, there is no goal to reach, no levels to gain, no enemies to defeat, therefore it isn't a game at all. It is more a MUSE: Multi User Simulated Environment.
Rather, it is a platform that allows games and worlds to be built within its framework. It is better classified as a richly graphical multiple user chat kingdom (MUCK) rather than an MMORPG. Some go so far as to just call it a metaverse, which isn't that far of a stretch. Membership requires a credit card or SMS-capable cellphone, both for security reasons and because each region has its own content rating, from PG to Mature (which can be very mature at times).

Second Life has become one of the popular forms of online entertainment for members of the furry fandom; at last count there were over 500 furries registered as Second Life users, and the true number is probably several times that by now. This arose out of the fact that the avatars, humanoid objects representing the user, are very customizable and the game's disposition for allowing users to create anything has made the concept of a virtual "fursuit" possible. These consist of a variety body parts which are attached to the user's avatar. These parts include tails, wings, legs, and so on - some have even made complete sets that resemble mythical beasts such as dragons, complete with scripted flame effects. Such avatar addons can be sold by their creators, who retain the ability to control distribution of their objects as part of their copyright, enforced by inbuilt copy restrictions. Some choose to give works away for free, for apparently altruistic or promotional purposes.

The high interactivity is also a plus for online social networks - as a result, various furry communities began to pop up in the game and are now a sizable force in the virtual world. In the October 2005 issue of Computer Games, "Furries" (used as a proper noun) were noted as a major userbase in Second Life in an article about the use of MMOs for self-actualization.

Signing up for a new account no longer requires a credit card or an SMS-capable cell phone. Also, current members have the option of changing their billing information in the members area so their membership fees can be deducted through PayPal.

Age policy
rating-nc17-button2
As with most social environments on the Net, there is no way to tell inside the game how old someone really is. The game's Terms of Service state quite clearly you must be over the age of 18 to enter the "main grid" of Second Life. If anyone is found to be under 18 in the main grid, they will be banned from the game and all money and inventory will be forfeit. It is generally assumed that almost all players in the main grid are over the age of 18.

Second Life rates the individual sections of the game as Mature, or PG, with other possible ratings. These ratings help moderate the behaviour of people that populate the various sections of the game, as they won't tolerate someone breaking the PG rating by performing a Mature-rated act in a PG-rated zone. The rating system is not in place to keep children out of areas in SL; it is there because many adults don't want to be exposed to adult material during their time in the game or to take a break from it for a time by visiting a PG sim. Luskwood is a prime example of a furry PG sim, safe from displays of naked hermaphrodites with a huge phallus and even bigger breasts parading around as one might see in a mature furry sim like Worlds (technically they are not supposed to be visible from a casual flyover).

Teen Grid
rating-14-button2
Late in 2005, Second Life created a separate version of its game designed with teens in mind, strictly separating those 18 years of age or greater from those 17 and under. Server-side tracking differentiates teen users from adult users, sending teens to the Teen Grid instead of the main grid. The Teen Grid has different rating policies than the main version; being made for teenagers, none of the regions are rated Mature and nothing may exceed the general PG13 to PG17 rating spans.
Environment and Economy
Costs and land ownership
Membership of Second Life falls into one of two categories: "Basic" and "Premium". Basic accounts are free to create and incur no monthly fee. If you wish to have more than one account however, secondary accounts (Alts) incur a one-off fee of US$9.95, which may be paid with a credit card, or a positive PayPal balance.

Basic accounts are subdivided into "verified" and "unverified". A verified account means that the user has submitted a credit card, PayPal account, or telephone number to verify their identity. However, users may create an account without any verification of their identity. This was a highly unpopular move that sparked protests. In response to this, Linden Labs added the ability to prevent unverified users from entering a parcel of land, and introduced an option to the LSL function llRequestAgentData() to return an agent's payment status as one of:

* No Payment Info on File
* Payment Info on File
* No Payment Info on File AND Payment Info Used (Only Beta/Lifetime users fall under this status)
* Payment Info on File AND Payment Info Used

The fears of "open registration" were that it would lead to an influx of minors on the main grid - both opening Linden Labs to potential lawsuits and its users; and allow griefers to quickly and freely create a new account as soon as one account is banned for their misdeeds.

Premium accounts come at a rate of US$9.95 each month, with discounts for paying quarterly or annually -- $22.50, and $72, respectively. The premium accounts come with the privilege of owning 512 square meters of land, known as 'First Land'. This is approximately 1/256 of 1 simulator, or "not much". They also come with a weekly stipend of L$400. The ability to acquire additional amounts of land bring an additional charge, called land tier.

* US$195.00/month: 65,536 square meters - Entire Region
* US$125.00/month: 32,768 square meters - 1/2 Region
* US$75.00/month: 16,384 square meters - 1/4 Region
* US$40.00/month: 8,192 square meters - 1/8 Region
* US$25.00/month: 4,096 square meters - 1/16 Region
* US$15.00/month: 2,048 square meters - 1/32 Region
* US$8.00/month: 1,024 square meters - 1/64 Region
* US$5.00/month: 512 square meters - 1/128 Region

These are the official Linden rates - it is possible to find island owners (see below) who will sell or rent land for lower rates, usually with some restrictions as to its use. It is also possible to get low-cost rented accommodation with no specific land ownership, and to own land without a premium account through a "group" to which the land is deeded. Many users own no land or accommodation at all - it is not required for object ownership, although object creation can be another matter.

Land, once purchased, may be traded between users at market rates. Large contiguous plots of land (or even relatively small plots of land in a busy place) can often sell at a hefty premium. Linden's tier remains the same whatever the selling price.

Referrals
Each user who joins Second Life gets an unique referral link. Giving this link to people who have yet to sign up, and getting them to do so used to credit the user with a certain amount of Linden Dollars -- the in-world currency. Since late January 2006, only premium account signups will result in a bonus, of L$2500, staggered over a three month period, where you get L$500 on the spot, another L$500 after one month, another L$500 after two months, and the final L$1000 after three months, to prevent gaming of the premium account referral bonus.

Currency
Users can buy or sell their Linden Dollars (L$) from within the game using the Lindex money market run by Linden Research. There are also third-party exchange services.

Exchanges can be performed with any number of Linden Dollars. The Lindex calculator will give you an idea of what you'll be receiving as a result of your sale. The amount that you receive as a result of your sale gets placed into your account, where you may have it applied to anything you owe for your account if you are a premium user, or may have it sent to you via PayPal for a US$1 charge. For larger amounts, you may also have a check mailed to you for a fee - US$5 if you're inside the United States, or US$15 for locations outside of the United States.

There are some furs who extract do this with the earnings from their businesses (custom avatar creation, generic avatar vending, etc.), turning it into profit that allows them to do whatever they want to pay for, up to, and including starting their own islands. Historically-speaking, the L$ is a relatively volatile currency prone to bouts of inflation. It can therefore be a good idea to remove any significant sums from the game, unless they are to be spent quickly in-game.

Islands and other locations
Islands are user-owned simulators within Second Life. You can buy your own island but the price to play is pretty steep: $1250 for start up costs and a server (you don't own the server itself though and due to multiple CPU servers, you are effectively buying space on a single CPU for your island), as well as $195 a month tier. Islands, as opposed to the mainland, get a dedicated processor to run on. Mainland sims (regions) may have to share resources with up to 3 other neighboring regions. An additional benefit is that purchasing an island allows you to contact the Linden Concierge directly with questions, bypassing the standard technical support lines and forums.

Prior to the creation of islands, every simulator belonged to a large land mass. Regions of these simulators sometimes ended up dedicated to specific groups, including the furry fandom.

There are currently a number of furry-owned or themed islands and regions in Second Life:

;Luskwood

* Luskwood consists of two sims/regions, Lusk and Perry, with some elements spilling into Clara; PG-rated, though not heavy on rules, Luskwood (started in mid-2003) is the oldest Furry-themed area in SL. Though not an island in practice (it resides on the SL mainland) these regions are wholly owned by the Luskwood group, and can be considered its own furry-themed area. It is home to Luskwood Creatures the first Furry avatar makers on SL. Luskwood builds many varieties of furry avatars, and is considered a sister-sim to, and administered by some of the same folks who run Taco.
:Luskwood

; Taco
* Currently owned and run by Arito Cotton of Luskwood fame.
* This sim currently has a Mature rating label, though it is asked that you keep the blatantly mature items far, far away from ground level.
* This sim has a slightly cartoony feel to it, and is the home of Dwellget, a department store that heavily parodies the USA based retail store chain, Target_Corporation.

; Worlds

* FurNation Worlds is a group of seven simulators (Prime, Alpha, Vista, Aqua, Reia, Omega, and Kitsune) run by the crew at FurNation.
* Each of their simulators seems to serve a particular purpose.
** Alpha appears to be the residential area;
** Vista and Omega appear to be sandbox areas;
** Prime is the welcome area and hub for everything in the area.
**There was a seventh (private) sim attached to the south of FNW, Istaria Prime, which is not related in any way to it.
*On April 5, 2006, Istaria Prime moved to the Fur Valleys sim conglomerate, followed by former FN sim Tria on April 7, becoming Masquerade Valley in the process.
*On May, 2006, Kitsune (formerly Kitsune Valley, from the Fur Valleys sim conglomerate) moved in, along with Aqua, which took Trias spot.
:FurNation Worlds

; The Forest

* The Forest was the first Furry oriented island in Second Life.
* This sim had an abundance of trees, but towards the end of Spade Richlieu's management, trees were a bit too bare in many spots to really own up to its name.
* This sim suffered from severe lag issues in the beginning, as it was a prime hangout to many furs, which led to the island being full at peak times. This distinction was taken later on by the FurNation Worlds.
* Sibe was banned from this simulator for reasons unknown; this made big news within the furry circles of Second Life, and it wasn't long before many wanted to know why. This ban has long since been repealed, probably during Anshe's acquisition.
* In its first months, The Forest it earned at least one dwell award (money previously given to people who rake in the most dwell - or butt hours - each month by Linden Research). The entire island earned one of the awards for January 2005, which offset the first month's island fee by about half in this case.
* The Forest eventually came under Anshe Chung's ownership. She soon added Tiger Creek to the south of The Forest as a residential area for furs to purchase or rent land. In March 2006 a second residential island was added, Bunny Bay. Revenues from Tiger Creek and Bunny Bay go towards paying for The Forest's tier.
* The Forest, Tiger Creek and Bunny Bay are part of what many call AnsheLand (mostly out of dislike for its owner - its proper name is actually Dreamland), a chunk of 55 linked islands located west-north-west of the North Continent of the main Grid.
* As of late May 2006, The Forest has suffered a crisis of administration. Disagreements between Anshe and the Forest Guides led to the replacement of the latter with a set of Dreamland administrators. Meanwhile, the Guides removed all their content, including the vast majority of the trees.
* At the start of June 2006, the Guides moved to a new sim in the north Fur Valleys region, Serenity Woods.
:The Forest

; Fur Valleys

* Sometimes simply known as The Valleys, this grouping of sims is located in the island cloud, southwest of Anshe Chung's Dreamland, and northwest of Furnation Worlds.
* The first sim in this region was founded in November 2005 by Costello. Since then, the region has grown, with the addition of new islands, generally all owned by different individuals. These include:
**Fox Valley, owned by Redfox Costello
**Wolf Valley, owned by Mako Minogue
**Tiger Valley, owned by Foxkin Impfondo
**FlyinTails Airfield, owned by Effsey Nelson
**Rabbit Valley, owned by the Kenzo Clan
**Dragon Valley, owned by Foxkin Impfondo
**Masquerade Valley, formerly Furnation Tria, owned by kodi Sachs
**Ryu Valley, owned by Foxkin Impfondo
**Isteria Prime, owned by Crawler Woyseck
**Serenity Woods, moved in early June 2006, run by the former Forest Guides of The Forest
**Critter Valley, moved in late June 2006, owned by kodi Sachs
**Silverymoon, owned by Angel Fluffy
**Zeta Valley, owned by Wolphin Fluffball
**FurPleasure, owned by AOD Enigma
* The Fur Valleys also now contain four ocean sims (also known as void sims), all owned by Foxkin Impfondo, including:
**Kitsune Sea, run by Autumnfox Vesperia
**Strianic Ocean, run by Stria Teazle
**Onyx Ocean, run by Fara Heart
**Dragons Void, run by djomnifusion Snickerdoodle
* Two sims moved out of The Valleys region in May 2006, Kitsune Valley (now FurNation Kitsune, of the FurNation Worlds sim conglomerate) and Fae Valley (which joined with Meeting Island and became Raccoon Hill, but has since vanished); these were owned by Alynna Vixen).
:Fur Valleys

; Abbotts Aerodrome

* Abbotts Aerodrome bills itself as "the most famous airport in Second Life". Occasionally referred to as Abbotts Furrodrome, Abbotts is among the most fur-friendly airports in Second Life. The Aerodrome features free demo flights, a skydiving center, A.I. flights, and shops owned by some of the leading aircraft designers in Second Life. Founded by Apotheus Silverman and Cubey Terra in 2004, Abbotts Aerodrome is a center for aircraft development and skydiving.

;Gay Yiffy Club
* Gay Yiffy Club is a popular furry nightclub, partially due to the open and welcoming atmosphere for every species, gender or alignment (even though its name suggests to cater only to gay male furs). Originally built by Senjin Soothsayer and managed by Kiroja Fluffy and Darkfoxx Bunyip. It's not even an island SIM, yet it's traffic surpasses most islands. The club is commonly referred to by its abbreviation GYC and thanks it's popularity mostly to the very active staff containing dancers, DJs and Bartenders. The club features dancefloor, bar, darkroom, stage, pool, private rooms, lounge area and a separately located shopping area.
Unlike other clubs, public display of intimacy is not frowned upon, and even encouraged.
:Gay Yiffy Club

; Rainbow Tiger
* Originally a dance club owned by Spike Nico and an adjoining mall owned by Shadow Garden in the Cleary region, Rainbow Tiger has expanded onto a full island. Rainbow Tiger currently has: Club Rainbow Tiger, a large dance club with live DJ's spinning tunes regularly as well as a large 3 story mall, swimming pool, events center, casino, and an exercise room. It is also the primary retail location for OrcaHorse, owned by Fore Odets. Rainbow Tiger has been awarded Developer's Incentive awards twice by Linden Lab since its creation. A second island named Rainbow Stallion was added at the end of March 2006, and is being developed as a residential area. Both sims are rated 'mature', and are open to all species.
:Rainbow Tiger

; Tartarus Island
* The new home of The Fur Dungeon, a club that once existed on the mainland. Underwater dungeon areas and an array of domes (including, presently, a mall and movie dome) complement the club itself. Created by Musuko Massiel.

; The Wild
* Furry Myst themed island owned by Shaun Wallaby.

; Cub Conclave

* An island for babyfurs. Features a castle, a mini mall, a marina, a bathhouse, a spaceship and Club Softpaws among other things. Founded and owned by Raven Welesa
:Cub Conclave

; Prometheus
* Mature-rated furry-themed island sim run by Sabvriel Padar. Mostly residential, with several houses nestled amid beautiful landscaping and apartments for rent up in the sky. Also hosts a small shop for vendors, and Club Synergy.

; Coonspiracy
* Southwest corner of Noonkkot sim, a hangout for raccoons, gators, swamp foxes, and the like.

; Meeting Island
* Mature-rated furry-themed island sim run by Pounce Teasle. Raccoon Hill, formerly Fae Valley from the Fur Valleys sim conglomerate, was added in May, 2006, but has since vacated. Meeting Island is best known for the furry escort establishment, The Seven Tails Brothel.

;Lost Furest

*After ownership of the original Forest was passed from Spade Richlieu to Anshe Chung, four furs decided to make a new home for themselves, thus the furry sim "Lost Furest" was born in 2005. It's now called home to many furs who seek a relaxing atmosphere.
*This island sim is "Mature" rated and correctly named Sables Dalliez >Lost Furest<.
*Visitors usually are thrown off by the sim's name, expecting trees and foliage yet finding an island full of sand. The name actually represents the act of being at rest or as we call it "Fur-Rest".
*Home to the Lost Creatures furry avatars, founded by two creators Cheetah Kitty and Daisuke Tokugawa.
*Awarded Developer's Incentive awards three times by Linden Lab and has recently become a heavy traffic area, earning the islands name in the top 20 most popular places often.

Collecting donations for Island upkeep fees is a popular activity on islands, furry or otherwise.
"Second Life Furry" logo
In (early 2006?), a "furry admin" meeting for all furry and/or furry-friendly sims' administrators or owners was held to discuss several unifying strategies regarding the fandom population in world (Inferniel Solvang was the lead fur for this particular encounter.) Of the many proposals, one was the creation of a common, official symbol or logo for identifying purposes for sim or fur.

The final design, a SL logo inspired image, came to be thanks to the design of SL furry artist, Yiffy Yaffle. The logo can be viewed on most of the older furry sims, with propagation to newer ones going at a slow, but steady rate.

Video
As of version 1.6.0, Second Life now hooks Quicktime, if it is installed on the user's system, to provide an interface that allows one to watch movies within the client itself. A very fast connection is suggested in this case, as you will be streaming world data and a video at the same time. If Quicktime is not installed, the user will be reminded that Quicktime is needed to watch video within the client when they enter a parcel with video.

A number of furs use the video feature to watch the Funday PawPet Show on their land.

Some users have taken advantage of this new feature to bring forward a new business: Movie Rentals. One may rent adult movies from a couple of the businesses in Second Life, for the express purpose of being able to watch pornography on their land for a couple of hours.

Preview Grid
As Linden Lab draws closer to a potential release, be it a sub-version upgrade, or a full point-release jump, they release preview versions of the client, to allow all interested parties to test the new client and its features. This is extremely important to builders, scripters, and texturers, as knowing how the new software will handle their works is very important.

The Preview client is run on a separate grid from the current client, which means there are less people to interact with. Most of the people available test their wares, making sure they won't have to do a full rebuild or rescript for the next version, as well as reporting bugs.

Technical advice
Due to the amount of data that is sent between the client (you) and the servers, Second Life requires broadband internet of 1Mbps or better, at least 512MB of computer RAM, and a CPU faster than 800MHz, though the bare minimum will not be as pleasant an experience. Linden Lab suggests that you invest in hardware that will exceed the minimum specs. There are also specific graphics card requirements due to the game making use of a certain OpenGL standard. The system requirements for interested people is listed at the Second Life website partially, and more exact requirements can be found inside its technical support area.

Although it is not impossible to use a dial-up connection with Second Life, nearly every option of the game requires serious cutting back; close to the bare minimum. This makes the experience flatter and less pleasant, with lag so heavy that movement is difficult and awkward with occasional stop-frame style "clipping" animation. Walking forward one step, for example, might occasionally result in sliding forward more then a yard or two before being snapped back to your intended position in a rather sudden jerk, or scenery change. Sometimes, said movement could make you sink through the ground or pass through other objects (like a wall) before the snap-back occurs. Then you find you need another of the regular 24MB to 25MB updates to play. There aren't many dialup users on Second Life as a result.

Second Life has been dealing with issues over ATi's video card drivers for quite a while. It has become practice on the forums to suggest to ATi users to pick up the Omega Drivers, a set of user-modified drivers recognized by ATi (according to their author) as "the best-modded drivers in the Internet". These Omega Drivers enable features that Second Life can use which aren't easily enabled in the default drivers.

Fansites
Linden Lab's policies regarding the use of trademarks on Second Life fansites are loose, provided the following stipulations are met.

* There is no attempt to pass off a fan site as Second Life or Linden Lab itself

* The following legal text is present on all Second Life related pages: "Second Life® and Linden Lab® are registered trademarks of Linden Research, Inc. No infringement is intended." this must include the ® circles though can be any size the website creators see fit.

Alicia Retban is a small fennec that frequents FurryMUCK, Tapestries MUCK, and Furcadia. She has been in the furry fandom since June 2003.

Character Information
* Age: 10
* Height: 2'6" (0.76 meters)
* Weight: 38 lbs (17 kg)

Alicia seems to be a very simple, outgoing girl. She sports pink hair (usually tied back in a ponytail), green eyes, and a black-tipped tail. Contrary to the usual markings of a fennec, her fur is a flat shade of light tan. Depending on the artist, this color can range from a light peach hue to sandy yellow and even to a burnt sienna color.

Alicia's normal clothing usually consists of a white T-shirt, an orange vest, and neon green parachute pants held up by a purple sash tied at the side. When it is required, she may wear sandals made of sandalwood.

Alicia has no parents (or at least, no reference is made as to family members, dead or alive), and it is inferred that she is homeless.

Personality Quirks
Alicia's bouncy, overtly cheerful nature has been noted as being somewhat superficial -- She has hardly ever shown any emotion aside from that of zeal or boredom. It is possible that she may possess ADHD, the claim of which is only further enhanced by her repeated showing of a short attention span. This rarity in depression can also possibly be attributed to Sunnydale Syndrome.
She also has a history of interjecting her speech with various light, foxlike noises (Variations of the false word, "Mrf") in a fashion not unlike that of moogles' use of the word "Kupo". Unlike the latter however, it has been admitted by her that this is not a word--Merely a habit.

Trivia
* Alicia Retban's last name is an anagram of the word 'Banter'.
* The missing left sleeve traces its roots to the very first piece of artwork done of the character, by JJKitsune. In drawing it, he was working from a Furcadia sprite, and thus did not have any real details with which to work from. Once the non-colored image was complete, her player noticed that Alicia's shirt was missing a sleeve on the left side, due to JJ having to constantly redraw the arm. The player turned down an offer to fix it, claiming that it "looked cool and original". Despite countless attempts to incorporate it into her canon, it has always reverted to this simple fact.
* Alicia's nationality has gone under debate numerous times. Contrary to popular belief, she is not Arabic, and her player claims that she speaks with a light Californian accent. Her overuse of the word "like" substantiates this claim, although the majority of slang words used that are seemingly made up and have a tendency to rhyme ("neato cheeto", "yippy skippy", etc) only further cloud the mystery.
Threyon is a chocolate-brown feline anthro who likes to chat and draw.

He was first created in January of 2004 on FurryMUCK, usually appearing in the form of a small kitten. He became fascinated with the subject of Furry art and has been slowly improving his drawing skills.

He has met many friends there, including Phalla, Roxikat, Shippa, and Sslaxx, to name only a few. In FurryMUCK, he currently shares an apartment with his roommate Shippa in the ParkView Tower.

Most of his early works of art were spacescapes, but he has slowly learned to draw Anthro art thanks to lessons from Piccillo's teachings.
Threyon//en.wikifur.com/wiki/User:ThreyonUser:Threyon2005-11-09T21:42:30Z
Threyon: The beginning...
