'''Father of the Pride''' (often abbreviated '''''FOTP''''') is a computer-animated television series from [[Wikipedia:DreamWorks|DreamWorks]] (the studio behind ''[[Madagascar]]'', ''Shrek'', and ''Shrek 2'').

The show deals with the mostly off-stage antics of a family of white lions who are performers at [[Wikipedia:Siegfried & Roy|Siegfried & Roy's]] magic show in Las Vegas.

The show premiered on August 31, 2004 on American Television. It was cancelled after its first season on the air. As of 2011, ''Father of the Pride'' was never syndicated. It is currently unknown when the show will return with new seasons and episodes.

DreamWorks released the DVD box set of the entire series on June 7, 2005. The box set contains all 14 episodes, including 3 episodes that haven't been aired before the release of the DVD, including the pilot (original and revised version), as well as commentaries and "The ''Lost'' Tale", an unanimated episode, presented with voice acting, sound and story boards. Out of the 3 unaired episodes (original pilot, Stage Fright and The Siegfried & Roy Movie Fantasy Experience Movie), all but the original pilot aired after the release of the DVD.

The show won the 2004 [[Ursa Major Awards|Ursa Major Award]] for Best Anthropomorphic Dramatic Series.

==Plot==

King [[Simba (The Lion King)|Simba]] and Queen [[Nala]]'s daughter [[Kiara]] is born and will be the next monarch of the Pride Lands.

As a young child, Kiara goes off exploring the Pride Lands, and decides to look in the Outlands, the place in which [[Scar]] and the hyenas once lived. She meets [[Kovu (character)|Kovu]], a dark lion who will be Scar's heir. The two form a friendship almost immediately, but they're both caught by their feuding parents [[Zira]] and Simba. They are then separated until adulthood.

By then, Kovu has been brainwashed to be an assassin to take out Simba so that the [[Outlander]]s can reign once more. A part of the plan to murder Simba involves getting his trust, so [[Nuka]] and [[Vitani]], Kovu's siblings, set the Pride Lands ablaze while Kiara is hunting. Kovu must then go on a staged rescue to gain trust from Kiara and Simba. In the process, Kiara and Kovu recognize and remember each other, but Kovu is still intent on murder. Simba isn't at all swayed by Kiara's rescue, but he allows Kovu to at least follow him home.

The next morning, Simba goes down to the water hole for a drink, alone, but Kovu is watching him and getting in the ready position. However, Kiara is very much awake, and informs Kovu that he promised to teach her hunting last night. Grudgingly, Kovu goes with her to practice. While demonstrating on how to be sneaky, he stumbles upon [[Timon (character)|Timon]] and [[Pumbaa]], and the two being carefree, playful clowns, he gets caught up in a game and realizes that he cares about Kiara and can't kill Simba.

Simba eventually warms up to Kovu, and while taking a private walk with him in the devastated grassland which the Outlanders burnt, the two are ambushed. Simba assumes that it was organized by Kovu, who is later banished. During the fight, Nuka is killed and Kovu is ostracized from his own pride.

Shortly afterwards, a war breaks out between the two prides. Kovu wants to run away, and Kiara states that they have to go convince their prides to at least have peace. They manage to stop the fighting, but Zira still wants Simba, as well as those who oppose her, dead. She accidentally falls off the cliff on which they're fighting and drowns in the river below.

==Biography==
Simba is the son of [[Mufasa]] and [[Sarabi]], the monarchs of the pridelands at the beginning of ''The Lion King''.

===Childhood===

As a child, Simba was a somewhat reckless, naive, optimistic, and very enthusiastic prince. He boasted frequently about being "future king" as opposed to merely a prince, and, perhaps unintentionally, pestered his jealous uncle [[Scar]].

His best friend was Nala, who would often get in trouble with him, especially when they decided to ditch Zazu, who was watching them at the time, and explore the Elephant Graveyard which Scar told Simba about, knowing he would want to go there to test his bravery.

The Elephant Graveyard later became known as the Outlands after the [[Outlander|dark lions]] were banished there in the [[Simba's Pride|second movie]].

At the time, the Elephant graveyard was home to thousands of hyenas, and three of them, Banzai, Shenzi, and Ed, were expecting the cubs. By now, Zazu had caught up with the kids, and the hyenas decided to send him off via a steam jet. Zazu reported the incident to Mufasa, who promptly chased off the hyenas.

Scar then decided to bump off both Mufasa and Simba, this time through a wildebeest stampede. Once again, he set up Simba and the hyenas, and signalled for the hyenas to initiate the stampede. Mufasa was again informed of the danger of his child, and while rescuing Simba, got himself into a fatal situation. While trying to get Scar to help him, Scar punctured his claws into those of Mufasa's, and then released him. Mufasa fell into the stampede and was crushed, and Scar told the traumatised cub that Mufasa's death was his fault and that he should run away. Scar then set the hyenas after him.

Simba escaped the hyenas, was then assumed dead by all, including the hyenas, and ran across the desert until he was taken in by [[Timon (character)|Timon]] and [[Pumbaa]]. Simba adopted a nihilistic philosophy, and lived in isolated bliss with his newfound friends.

===Adulthood===

Finally, the turning point came in Simba's life when he met up again with Nala, while trying to chase her off from killing Pumbaa. Simba was told of what was going on back home under Scar's rule, but due to his "Hakuna Matata" philosophy, he refused to return, although he would be king. He finally got into a bitter argument with her and offended, he left to be alone in the grassland at night.

[[Rafiki]], who had found out that he was alive, found Simba and decided to annoy him, possibly delirious from joy, and when Simba asked him who he was, countered the question with "The question is, Who are '''you'''?"
Simba admitted to not being so sure anymore, Rafiki took this as a perfect opportunity to make Simba take responsibility for what was rightfully his kingdom. He was escorted to a small pool and told that his father lived in him.

Mufasa then appeared, as a ghost in the sky, to command Simba to take responsibility and left him shortly afterwards, leaving Simba to make up his mind. Simba then returned to the Pridelands.

Upon return, he found out that a drought had occurred, and regardless, Scar refused to let the pride leave. What's more, the hyenas, the natural enemy of the lion, had taken over. Simba finally found Scar abusing his mother. Enraged, Simba revealed himself and was unrecognised by his family, who believed him to be Mufasa coming back for revenge.

Scar realised that Simba was in fact alive, and then decided to tell the pride that Simba was the one responsible for Mufasa's death. A thunderstorm began, and Scar had Simba dangling from the jutting edge of Pride Rock. Like he had killed Mufasa, Scar dug his claws into Simba's, and finally revealed that he was the killer. Further enraged, Simba jumped back up and engaged in battle, finally throwing Scar off the edge. Scar was then consumed by the hyenas he had just betrayed when trying to pin Mufasa's death on them after admitting it to Simba.

Simba then became king and had a daughter, [[Kiara]], with Nala. (For discussion on some of the non-canonical identities of the cub, see the section entitled ''Who was the cub?'' in the article on [[Kiara]].)

===Reign===

Simba banished the dark lions, who became known as Outlanders, to the Elephant Graveyard for supporting Scar. The hyenas ran off, probably due to lack of support.

Due to his paranoia of losing Kiara, Simba became uptight and overprotective. One day in her early childhood, Kiara had gone off to the Outlands, and Simba had to go rescue her, where he met Scar's mate/fangirl [[Zira]], who taunted Simba with the implication of the death of another cub. Simba merely took his daughter and left, and did not meet up with Zira again until some years later.

When Kiara finally became an adult, Simba reluctantly allowed her to go on a hunt alone. Up until then, he would always send out Timon and Pumbaa to watch her, which he did again while Kiara was hunting.

After the Outlanders, [[Nuka]] and [[Vitani]] had set the grassland on fire and [[Kovu (character)|Kovu]] began his staged rescue, Simba noticed that Kiara was in danger and went off to get her, meeting Kovu, who at the time had been trained to assassinate him. Simba, reserving judgment of Kovu, allowed him to follow him home.

After finally gaining enough trust for Kovu to take a personal walk with him, Simba was ambushed by the Outlanders. Assuming Kovu had set it up, Simba regained his hatred towards dark lions, and banished Kovu.

The death of Nuka, who had been crushed by a log Simba hack kicked on him, stirred up enough hatred from the Outlanders for a war to break out. '''Scar''' (also known as '''Taka''') is the main antagonist of ''[[The Lion King]]'' and a minor antagonist in ''[[The Lion King II: Simba's Pride]]''. He is [[Simba (The Lion King)|Simba]]'s uncle and [[Mufasa]]'s younger brother. Unlike his brother, Scar is small and thin, and his mane is black. There is a scar over his left eye. In his youth, Scar was known by the name of "Taka"--Swahili slang for "trash" or "dirt". In the book ''A Tale of Two Brothers'', he is depicted as being very jealous of his brother Mufasa. The source of this envy is the fact that Mufasa was chosen as heir over Scar. In the book, it is also revealed that Scar's friendship with [[Shenzi (The Lion King)|Shenzi]], [[Banzai]], and [[Ed]]--the trio of [[hyena]]s who were his henchmen in ''The Lion King''--lasted from his adolescence. Even as an adolescent, Scar was feared by the trio.

In ''A Tale of Two Brothers'', the Pridelands is in a terrible drought. In order to handle such matters, [[Ahadi]] breaks a promise he made to Taka to take the adolescent lion hunting. Taka becomes embittered and flees to speak with Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed, and there he hatches a plan to make Mufasa look like a fool, believing that if Mufasa appeared inferior to Taka, Ahadi would rescind on his decision to appoint Mufasa as heir. Taka lures Mufasa to the waterhole, where Boma, a Cape buffalo, is hoarding all the water for himself. When Mufasa tries to reason with Boma, Taka interjects with an ultimatum: Boma should clear out, or challenge Mufasa to a fight. Boma becomes enraged and attacks Mufasa, but Mufasa is rescued by Rafiki. Taka, unfortunately, becomes the target of Boma and his herd. Taka is hit in the face by one of the buffalo's horns and knocked unconscious, but before he is killed, Ahadi appears with various other animals and stops the fight. Thereafter--because of the scar on his face--Taka is branded with the moniker "Scar".

==Adulthood==

Scar's jealousy of Mufasa carried over into his adulthood. During Mufasa's reign, Scar became an aloof pridal member whose presence seemed tolerated by most.

When Simba was born--quelling any chances of Scar gaining the throne--Scar's envy grew. He began to scheme ways of killing off his nephew and brother. It was Scar who tricked Simba into venturing to the Elephant Graveyard. There, Simba; his betrothed, [[Nala]]; and the majordomo, [[Zazu]] were almost killed by the hyenas Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed. They were rescued by the timely arrival of Mufasa, which angered Scar. Once Mufasa had taken the others out of the Elephant Graveyard, Scar went back, and with the hyenas, he discussed his plans to kill Mufasa and Simba both.

Not long after the incident at the Elephant Graveyard, Scar lured Simba into the Gorge by telling him that his father had a surprise for him. He left Simba at the bottom of the Gorge and snuck off to signal the hyenas, who were waiting with a wildebeest herd on the cliffs above. While Simba ran for his life, Scar returned to Pride Rock and told Mufasa that Simba was in danger. Mufasa rushed to his son's aid and succeeded in getting Simba out of the way of the herd, but when he tried to climb to safety himself, Scar intercepted him on the cliff face. Mufasa pleaded for his brother's help, but Scar instead flung him off the cliff. Mufasa was trampled to death by the wildebeest.

When Simba returned to the bottom of the Gorge and found the body of Mufasa, Scar guilted Simba into believing that he was responsible for the death of his father and urged him to run away. Simba did so, and Scar sent the hyenas after him. However, Simba managed to escape into a patch of thorns, and the hyenas left him for dead.

Scar returned to Pride Rock and delivered the news that Mufasa and Simba were both dead. With no other heirs in place, Scar was able to claim the throne.

==Reign==

Scar's first order of business as new king was to give the hyenas free range of the Pridelands. He also banned the mention of Mufasa's name.

Specific events during Scar's reign are sketchy at best. It is speculated that during this time, he fathered [[Nuka]] and [[Vitani]] with [[Zira]], though it has never been confirmed that Vitani or Nuka are his cubs. Neither Zira nor the two cubs appear in ''The Lion King''.

Scar's rule lasted for quite a long time--up until Simba's ascension to adulthood. During that time, thanks to Scar's irresponsible management, the Pridelands became over-hunted and barren. The pride members began to voice their desire to follow the herds to greener, more prosperous areas, but Scar would not listen. Food became so scarce that even the hyenas--Scar's avid supporters--began to murmur against him.

During this time, Nala fled the pride. Some speculate that her reasons for leaving stemmed from a confrontation she had with Scar, in which Scar attempted to make her his queen. This idea is supported by ''The Lion King on Broadway'' show, in which Scar makes overtures towards Nala during the song ''The Madness of King Scar''. However, when Nala explains her escape to Simba in the movie, she cites a desire to "find help" as her reason for leaving the pride.

When Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed complained to Scar about the lionesses not hunting, Scar demanded an explanation from [[Sarabi]], whom he had demoted from queen to huntress. Sarabi tried to explain to him that the herds had moved and that the pride should leave Pride Rock, but again Scar refused. Enraged, Sarabi compared Scar to Mufasa, and Scar struck her across the face. In that moment, Simba appeared and confronted Scar. It was then that he learned the truth of Mufasa's death, and when the lionesses heard, they rallied around Simba. The hyenas backed Scar, and a battle ensued.

Simba chased Scar up to the pinnacle of Pride Rock, where Scar pleaded for his life, telling Simba that the hyenas were the ones who plotted Mufasa's death. Simba agreed to spare Scar if he would run away. However, Scar opted to attack Simba instead. In the struggle, Scar was flung off of Pride Rock. There, the hyenas--who had heard him try to slough the blame of Mufasa's death off on them--turned on Scar and killed him.

==Legacy==
In the second movie, ''[[Simba's Pride]]'', it is alleged that before his death, Scar was able to father [[Nuka]] with [[Zira]] before he died. Some speculate that [[Vitani]] is also the offspring of this pairing, but it has not been confirmed. Despite having a cub of his own flesh and blood, Scar "hand-picked" [[Kovu (character)|Kovu]]--another one of Zira's offspring--as his heir before his death. In ''Simba's Pride'', Nuka reveals that--despite a striking resemblance to Scar--Kovu is not Scar's son.

After Scar's death, Zira and some of her fellow lionesses were banished from the Pridelands by Simba. They became known as [[Outlanders]], and they remained loyal to Scar. This has raised some controversy, because in ''The Lion King'', all the lionesses fought on Simba's side.

:I don't have sources I can point to, but I'm pretty sure at least some of those ideas were accurate. A couple of them (Nuka's last words and Zira committing suicide) were among several lines/scenes that were in the pre-release version of the film that a number of people saw but which were dropped late in the production, apparently in an effort to make the movie more kid-friendly (most serious TLK fans thought the movie would have been better if they had been left in). Chaka/Shani was widely disseminated (though I don't recall where it originated), and when Cheech Marin (Banzai) was doing interviews in support of the movie "Tin Cup" he stated that one of the other projects he was working on was recording lines for "Simba's Pride". I remember hearing of "Binti" but don't recall whether it was in connection with TLK itself or "Simba's Pride". ''Shark Tale'' takes place in the underwater world of South Side Reef, a crowded metropolis where streams of fish surge between coral skyscrapers, police dolphins deal with traffic chaos caused by an overturned mackerel, lobster-trains scuttle along elevated tracks, and such business as Coral Cola, The Gup, and Old Wavy operate.

One of the inhabitants of the reef is Oscar, a lowly tongue-scrubber who works at Sykes' Whale Wash, where whales move along an assembly line having barnacles removed and their skin and teeth scrubbed clean. Oscar dreams of riches and fame beyond his humdrum life.

Arriving late for work, Oscar finds that he's already punched in on the time clock, and realizes he has been helped out by Angie, the angelfish receptionist and cashier at the Whale Wash with whom he is a close friend. He stops by her office to thank her and chat, and exasperates her with his latest get-rich-quick-scheme: bottled water.

Meanwhile, in a sunken ocean liner off the reef, Whale Wash owner Sykes – a porcupine blowfish – is nervously meeting with Don Lino, a great white shark and head of the reef mafia. Lino explains that he's retiring and is handing over control of the reef to his two sons Lenny and Frank. Sykes can understand the choice of the mean, bullying Frankie, but scoffs at the thought of passive, kind-hearted Lenny running the reef. Lino loses his temper and orders Sykes out, telling him that he'll have to start paying protection money if he doesn't want something to happen to his Whale Wash.

As the day progresses, Oscar bemoans his existence shoveling slime in the gaping maw of an endless line of whales. A prank turns unpleasant when a whale is accidentally hit in the eye with a jet of soap and thrashes about in pain. Oscar closes the emergency clamps to hold the whale immobile and squeegees the soap from the whale's eye, shortly before Ernie and Bernie – two Rastafarian jellyfish, and henchmen of Sykes – arrive and hurl him into Sykes' office. To raise the cash to pay of Don Lino, Sykes is calling in his IOUs and Oscar owes him five thousand clams, to be paid back my tomorrow. Oscar protests that is impossible, but Sykes tells him to bring it to the racetrack tomorrow, or else. As Sykes leaves, Bernie stings Oscar in the eye as a warning.

That evening, Oscar mopes on Angie's balcony as she tends to his swollen eye. She can't understand why Oscar always gets himself into these situations, nor his obsession with trying to live at the top of the reef. Oscar recalls his late father, a tongue-scrubber at the Whale Wash for 25 years. Oscar had always thought that working at the wash was the greatest job anyone could do until he took his father's scrubbing broom to school for show-and-tell, and got laughed at. After that, he desperately wanted to be a somebody. Angie tries to explain to him that he doesn't need to live at the top of the reef to be a somebody, and, feeling sorry for him, she tries to help him out by giving him a pink pearl – a precious gift from her grandmother. Oscar is reluctant to take such a valuable object from her, but Angie insists, saying it will get him the money he needs to pay back Sykes.

In the meantime, the great white sharks are dining on Lino's ship. Don Lino, Lenny, and Frankie occupy a table in the corner. Lino praises Frankie for being a killer, but he expresses concern about Lenny, about whom he has been hearing things. The boldness of the wager attracts the attention of gold-digging femme-fatale Lola, half-lionfish, half-dragonfish. When Sykes turns up with Ernie and Bernie, he is livid that Oscar has placed a bet with the money he is owed, and Lola, realizing that Oscar isn't the millionaire she imagined, she quickly loses interest in him, calling him a nobody.

In the race on which Oscar has bet, Lucky Day gets off to a bad beginning when his starting gate jams and doesn't open. However, he manages to smash through it and – astonishingly – not only manages to catch up with the pack but begin to draw ahead. The last length sees Lucky Day and Fishfingers neck and neck, before Lucky Day puts on a burst of speed and pulls ahead. A win for Lucky Day seems certain until he wobbles and trips, tumbling in a heap just short of the finish line. Oscar sees his dreams of begin rich and famous evaporate, and Sykes, inflating in anger, tells Ernie and Bernie to find the deepest, darkest hole in the ocean.

Ernie and Bernie take Oscar out into the wasteland surrounding the reef, and, with Oscar tied to a rock, torture him with their glowy stingers. At the same time, Frankie and Lenny approach from the direction of Lino's ship. Frankie tells Lenny it doesn't come any easier than this, and instructs him to eat Oscar. Ernie and Bernie flee as Lenny approaches. Lenny psyches himself up to eat Oscar, but can't go through with it, and tries to fake it by biting through Oscar's ropes and thrashing his tail to stir up a cloud of silt to hide Oscar's escape. But Oscar is confused by Lenny's attempt to save him, and is still there, looking baffled, as the silt settles.

Frankie declares that he has had it up to here with Lenny, and, with a growl, launches himself after Oscar. Just as Frankie catches up with Oscar, he's unexpectedly hit from above by a falling anchor. Horrified, Lenny tosses the anchor aside and cradles his dying brother. Feeling responsible for what happened, Lenny swims off distraught, leaving Oscar along with Frankie’s body when Ernie and Bernie return. Realizing he can become famous, Oscar lets them believe he killed the shark.

Back at the Whale Wash, Oscar is soon telling an increasingly embellished story about what happened, and soon the media is reporting the story. An interview with reporter Katie Current is interrupted by Sykes, who declares himself Oscar’s manager. Oscar is a little dubious, but he and Sykes agree to a 50/50 partnership.

Things are somber back on Lino's ship as Frankie's funeral is held, attended by members of the Five Families – the great whites, hammerheads, leopard sharks, killer whales ([[Orca_(species)|orcas]]), and swordfish (or sailfish). At the wake afterwards, Don Feinberg, the aging don of the leopard sharks, tells Lino about the Shark Slayer, about whom the word is getting around. Lino determines to find out who this shark slayer is.

In the meantime, Oscar rockets to stardom, and holds a lavish party in his new penthouse apartment at the top of the reef. Angie arrives and Oscar shows her the breathtaking view from his balcony. He seems on the verge of proposing to her when they are interrupted by Lola. Now that Oscar really is a somebody after all, she's determined to make him her own, and leads him away from Angie. Back inside the apartment, there is panic as the cry goes up that there are two great whites on the edge of the reef. Oscar reluctantly leaves to take care of the sharks.

With the beginning of a plan forming in his mind, Oscar returns to the storage shed to find Lenny.

She tells Oscar to tell the truth and Lenny to go home. Neither like the sound of this, and Lenny devises a plan to stage a public fight in which he "dies", thereby solving both their problems.

Things take a slight turn for the worse when Lenny, chasing after Oscar, gets a little enthusiastic and accidentally swallows Oscar whole. Realizing what he has done, Lenny begins to gag, on the verge of throwing up. Oscar, inside Lenny's mouth, calms him down and "forces" open Lenny's jaws in a appearance of superhero-like strength. The chase resumes, and, after being "thrown" through a jumbotron screen, Lenny plummets screaming to his "death" down a crevice. In the aftermath of the fight, Lola sidles up to Oscar and gives him a lingering kiss in front of the television cameras. Angie, watching the live news reports back at the Whale Wash, is scared.

In the storage shed afterwards, Lenny is busily painting himself blue. When his shark snout squashed with rubber bands and his gills hidden behind a scarf of caution tape, he intends to pass himself off as Sebastian the Whale-Washin' [[Dolphin]]. When Oscar returns, Angie is furious about Oscar kissing Lola, and asks him if he really believes she would be interested in him if he wasn't rich and famous. Oscar replies that at least she treats him like a somebody, and that no one loved him when he was a nobody. Hurt, Angie yells that she did. Oscar is taken aback, and Angie tells him that, to her, he was a somebody, but now she just sees him as a sham. Oscar tries to mend the situation, but Angie tells him to go away. Oscar leaves sadly, leaving Lenny to comfort a weeping Angie.

Oscar glumly swims around the reef, visiting old familiar places and fondly remembering the fun parts of his simpler life before becoming the Shark Slayer. Returning to his penthouse apartment, he ignores the party going on inside, and, alone, down on the reef from the balcony. He realizes that Angie's right, and when Lola joins him from inside, he tells her that he doesn't think things are going to work out between them. Furious that anyone would dare to dump her, Lola slams him repeatedly against the plate-glass window.

Oscar arrives at the Whale Wash the next day determined to make up with Angie, but he finds out through Sykes that she hasn't turned up to work. A phone call from Luca, Lino's octopus consigliere, reveals that she has been abducted, and that if he doesn't want to see her sleeping with the fishes (the dead ones), he had better present himself at a sit-down in one hour. Oscar resolves to rescue her. Lenny, now working at the Whale Wash in his guise as Sebastian, says he can't just waltz in there and say, "Hi Pop! I'm a dolphin!". Sykes is doubly scared to realize his new employee is Lenny and Oscar isn't a real shark slayer. Oscar muses that the sharks don't know that.

Oscar, Sykes, and the still-disguised Lenny attend the sit-down. Whilst waiting for Lino to arrive, a very nervous Oscar realizes the members of the Five Families are actually terrified of him. Lino enters and regards the fish who has killed both his sons. When he teases Oscar by revealing Angie wriggling on a serving platter, Oscar tries to say he barely knows her. Lola emerges from the shadows and declares he's bluffing, after which Oscar says Lino has nothing, and tells Lenny to take her out – in a flash, Lenny swims down the table and swallows Angie whole (in fact, holding her safe in his mouth). Oscar teases the sharks and he almost gets away with it, but the taste of Angie on his tongue is making Lenny nauseous and he vomits over the meeting table. Hearing Lenny say, "I couldn't take it! The taste was killin' me!", Lino realizes the dolphin at the end of the table is his son. He is bewildered, yet relieved, that Lenny is still alive, then embarrassed about how the situation makes him look in front of his mob underlings, and finally furious that Oscar has not only took Frankie away, but also turned Lenny into a dolphin.

With surprising speed, Lino throws himself at Oscar with the intent of eating him. Oscar escapes from the ocean liner and lures Lino to the Whale Wash, where he tries to trap him in the emergency whale clamp, but in the confusion, he pins Lenny instead. Continuing to play cat-and-mouse with Lino, Oscar eventually traps the great white in the middle of the Whale Wash's various robotic sponges. A gathering crowd, including a TV crew with Katie Current, hails Oscar as a hero once again and lift him aloft, chanting his name. Angie sees everything's going to go on just as before, and, having had enough, begins to swim away. Seeing he's about to lose Angie again, Oscar screams an admission that he isn't a real shark slayer. He explains to Lino that an anchor killed Frankie and that neither he nor Lenny had anything to do with it. Lino can't understand why Lenny would then run away, and Lenny miserably explains it was because he always wanted him to be more like Frankie, and that he could never be the shark he wants him to be. Oscar admonishes Lino, telling him everyone loves Lenny just the way he is, and why can't he? He further tells Lino he shouldn't make the same mistake he has, and lose someone important. Lenny looks hopefully at his father, who relents, and asks to be released so he can forgive his son. Oscar withdraws the traps, and Lino hugs Lenny. As this happens, Oscar is approached by Angie, and he awkwardly tells her than he has realized he didn't need the top of the reef, and everything he wanted was already in front of him. She asks him about being a somebody, and he sheepishly tells her that he's a nobody without her. Angie throws her arms around Oscar and kisses him, to the crowd's approval. After the kiss, Oscar tentatively questions Lino about what will happen to him after this, but Lino, having regained his son, seems willing to call it a truce. Asked by Katie Current what he's now gonna do, having lost everything he lied so hard to achieve, Oscar looks thoughtful.

The movie ends with Oscar now one of Sykes' partners at the Whale Wash. Over a lengthy musical number, we see the Whale Wash workers dancing as they clean the incoming whales. Lenny and Lino arrive and greet Angie in the cashier's booth, telling her they have bought some new customers – the various members of the Five Families. In the closing scene, Oscar and Angie share a kiss atop a revolving sign near the Whale Wash.

Things take a slight turn for the worse when Lenny, chasing after Oscar, gets a little enthusiastic and accidentally swallows Oscar whole. The chase resumes, and, after being "thrown" through a jumbotron screen, Lenny plummets screaming to his "death" down a crevice. He is bewildered, yet relieved, that Lenny is still alive, then embarrassed about how the situation makes him look in front of his mob underlings, and finally furious that Oscar has not only took Frankie away, but also turned Lenny into a dolphin.

Lenny looks hopefully at his father, who relents, and asks to be released so he can forgive his son. Oscar withdraws the traps, and Lino hugs Lenny. As this happens, Oscar is approached by Angie, and he awkwardly tells her than he has realized he didn't need the top of the reef, and everything he wanted was already in front of him. She asks him about being a somebody, and he sheepishly tells her that he's a nobody without her. Angie throws her arms around Oscar and kisses him, to the crowd's approval. After the kiss, Oscar tentatively questions Lino about what will happen to him after this, but Lino, having regained his son, seems willing to call it a truce. Asked by Katie Current what he's now gonna do, having lost everything he lied so hard to achieve, Oscar looks thoughtful.

The movie ends with Oscar now one of Sykes' partners at the Whale Wash. Over a lengthy musical number, we see the Whale Wash workers dancing as they clean the incoming whales. Lenny and Lino arrive and greet Angie in the cashier's booth, telling her they have bought some new customers – the various members of the Five Families. In the closing scene, Oscar and Angie share a kiss atop a revolving sign near the Whale Wash.

''Shark Tale'' takes place in the underwater world of South Side Reef, a crowded metropolis where streams of fish surge between coral skyscrapers, police dolphins deal with traffic chaos caused by an overturned mackerel, lobster-trains scuttle along elevated tracks, and such business as Coral Cola, The Gup, and Old Wavy operate.

One of the inhabitants of the reef is Oscar, a lowly tongue-scrubber who works at Sykes' Whale Wash, where whales move along an assembly line having barnacles removed and their skin and teeth scrubbed clean. Oscar dreams of riches and fame beyond his humdrum life.

Arriving late for work, Oscar finds that he's already punched in on the time clock, and realizes he has been helped out by Angie, the angelfish receptionist and cashier at the Whale Wash with whom he is a close friend. He stops by her office to thank her and chat, and exasperates her with his latest get-rich-quick-scheme: bottled water.

Meanwhile, in a sunken ocean liner off the reef, Whale Wash owner Sykes – a porcupine blowfish – is nervously meeting with Don Lino, a great white shark and head of the reef mafia. Lino explains that he's retiring and is handing over control of the reef to his two sons Lenny and Frank. Sykes can understand the choice of the mean, bullying Frankie, but scoffs at the thought of passive, kind-hearted Lenny running the reef. Lino loses his temper and orders Sykes out, telling him that he'll have to start paying protection money if he doesn't want something to happen to his Whale Wash.

As the day progresses, Oscar bemoans his existence shoveling slime in the gaping maw of an endless line of whales. A prank turns unpleasant when a whale is accidentally hit in the eye with a jet of soap and thrashes about in pain. Oscar closes the emergency clamps to hold the whale immobile and squeegees the soap from the whale's eye, shortly before Ernie and Bernie – two Rastafarian jellyfish, and henchmen of Sykes – arrive and hurl him into Sykes' office. To raise the cash to pay of Don Lino, Sykes is calling in his IOUs and Oscar owes him five thousand clams, to be paid back my tomorrow. Oscar had always thought that working at the wash was the greatest job anyone could do until he took his father's scrubbing broom to school for show-and-tell, and got laughed at. After that, he desperately wanted to be a somebody. Angie tries to explain to him that he doesn't need to live at the top of the reef to be a somebody, and, feeling sorry for him, she tries to help him out by giving him a pink pearl – a precious gift from her grandmother. Oscar is reluctant to take such a valuable object from her, but Angie insists, saying it will get him the money he needs to pay back Sykes.

In the meantime, the great white sharks are dining on Lino's ship. Don Lino, Lenny, and Frankie occupy a table in the corner. Lino praises Frankie for being a killer, but he expresses concern about Lenny, about whom he has been hearing things. Lino plucks a live shrimp from his shrimp cocktail and demands that Lenny eat it in front of him. Lenny refuses and helps the shrimp escape to freedom out the window. Lino is furious and tells Frankie to take Lenny out to show him the ropes – Lenny is going to learn how to be a shark, whether he likes it or not.

The next day, Oscar has pawned Angie's pearl and arrives at South Side Racetrack with the 5,000 clams. Overhearing two fish discussing how the next race is rigged to allow long-shot seahorse Lucky Day to win, Oscar rashly bets all of Sykes' money on it. The boldness of the wager attracts the attention of gold-digging femme-fatale Lola, half-lionfish, half-dragonfish. When Sykes turns up with Ernie and Bernie, he is livid that Oscar has placed a bet with the money he is owed, and Lola, realizing that Oscar isn't the millionaire she imagined, she quickly loses interest in him, calling him a nobody.

In the race on which Oscar has bet, Lucky Day gets off to a bad beginning when his starting gate jams and doesn't open. However, he manages to smash through it and – astonishingly – not only manages to catch up with the pack but begin to draw ahead. The last length sees Lucky Day and Fishfingers neck and neck, before Lucky Day puts on a burst of speed and pulls ahead. A win for Lucky Day seems certain until he wobbles and trips, tumbling in a heap just short of the finish line. Oscar sees his dreams of begin rich and famous evaporate, and Sykes, inflating in anger, tells Ernie and Bernie to find the deepest, darkest hole in the ocean.

Ernie and Bernie take Oscar out into the wasteland surrounding the reef, and, with Oscar tied to a rock, torture him with their glowy stingers. At the same time, Frankie and Lenny approach from the direction of Lino's ship. Frankie tells Lenny it doesn't come any easier than this, and instructs him to eat Oscar. Ernie and Bernie flee as Lenny approaches. Lenny psyches himself up to eat Oscar, but can't go through with it, and tries to fake it by biting through Oscar's ropes and thrashing his tail to stir up a cloud of silt to hide Oscar's escape. But Oscar is confused by Lenny's attempt to save him, and is still there, looking baffled, as the silt settles.

Frankie declares that he has had it up to here with Lenny, and, with a growl, launches himself after Oscar. Just as Frankie catches up with Oscar, he's unexpectedly hit from above by a falling anchor. Horrified, Lenny tosses the anchor aside and cradles his dying brother. Feeling responsible for what happened, Lenny swims off distraught, leaving Oscar along with Frankie’s body when Ernie and Bernie return. Realizing he can become famous, Oscar lets them believe he killed the shark.

Back at the Whale Wash, Oscar is soon telling an increasingly embellished story about what happened, and soon the media is reporting the story. An interview with reporter Katie Current is interrupted by Sykes, who declares himself Oscar’s manager. Oscar is a little dubious, but he and Sykes agree to a 50/50 partnership.

Things are somber back on Lino's ship as Frankie's funeral is held, attended by members of the Five Families – the great whites, hammerheads, leopard sharks, killer whales ([[Orca_(species)|orcas]]), and swordfish (or sailfish). At the wake afterwards, Don Feinberg, the aging don of the leopard sharks, tells Lino about the Shark Slayer, about whom the word is getting around. Lino determines to find out who this shark slayer is.

In the meantime, Oscar rockets to stardom, and holds a lavish party in his new penthouse apartment at the top of the reef. Angie arrives and Oscar shows her the breathtaking view from his balcony. He seems on the verge of proposing to her when they are interrupted by Lola. Now that Oscar really is a somebody after all, she's determined to make him her own, and leads him away from Angie. Back inside the apartment, there is panic as the cry goes up that there are two great whites on the edge of the reef. Oscar reluctantly leaves to take care of the sharks.

Panicked, Oscar returns to his now-nearly-empty apartment where Sykes is on the phone trading insults with Lino. Lino asks to talk with Oscar and tells him he's going to tear him fin from fin. After Sykes leaves, Oscar finds Lola has been waiting for him. She assures him that all he has to do is show the sharks who’s boss and they'll leave him alone. With the beginning of a plan forming in his mind, Oscar returns to the storage shed to find Lenny.

King [[Simba (The Lion King)|Simba]] and Queen [[Nala (The Lion King)|Nala]]'s daughter [[Kiara]] is born and will be the next monarch of the Pride Lands.

As a young child, Kiara goes off exploring the Pride Lands, and decides to look in the Outlands, the place in which [[Scar]] and the hyenas once lived. She meets [[Kovu (character)|Kovu]], a dark lion who will be Scar's heir. The two form a friendship almost immediately, but they're both caught by their feuding parents [[Zira]] and Simba. They are then separated until adulthood.

By then, Kovu has been brainwashed to be an assassin to take out Simba so that the [[Outlander]]s can reign once more. A part of the plan to murder Simba involves getting his trust, so [[Nuka]] and [[Vitani]], Kovu's siblings, set the Pride Lands ablaze while Kiara is hunting. Kovu must then go on a staged rescue to gain trust from Kiara and Simba. In the process, Kiara and Kovu recognise and remember each other, but Kovu is still intent on murder. Simba isn't at all swayed by Kiara's rescue, but he allows Kovu to at least follow him home.

The next morning, Simba goes down to the water hole for a drink, alone, but Kovu is watching him and getting in the ready position. However, Kiara is very much awake, and informs Kovu that he promised to teach her hunting last night. Grudgingly, Kovu goes with her to practice. While demonstrating on how to be sneaky, he stumbles upon [[Timon (character)|Timon]] and [[Pumbaa]], and the two being carefree, playful clowns, he gets caught up in a game and realizes that he cares about Kiara and can't kill Simba.

Simba eventually warms up to Kovu, and while taking a private walk with him in the devastated grassland which the Outlanders burnt, the two are ambushed. Simba assumes that it was organized by Kovu, who is later banished. During the fight, Nuka is killed and Kovu is ostracized from his own pride.

Shortly afterwards, a war breaks out between the two prides. Kovu wants to run away, and Kiara states that they have to go convince their prides to at least have peace. They manage to stop the fighting, but Zira still wants Simba, as well as those who oppose her, dead. She accidentally falls off the cliff on which they are fighting and drowns in the river below.

Some time after Simba is forced to flee from his home, she finds him with [[Timon (character)|Timon]] and [[Pumbaa]]; Simba and Nala's relationship turns romantic. Along with help from [[Rafiki]] and the ghost of Simba's father, [[Mufasa]], she convinces him to go back to challenge his uncle [[Scar]] for Pride Rock.

Simba and Nala later produce at least one cub, [[Kiara]].

Critics of this label point out that, although Lenny behaves in quite an effeminate manner, his sexual orientation simply does not arise one way or the other in the movie. What is true, however, that Lenny's vegetarianism is an excellent allegory for homosexuality – he is initially in the closet, afraid to admit it to anybody and is especially afraid that his father will never accept him for who he is. He wonders if he is the way he is because something is "wrong" with him, and eventually "comes out" by confiding with a friend.

''Shark Tale'' takes place in the underwater world of South Side Reef, a crowded metropolis where streams of fish surge between coral skyscrapers, police dolphins deal with traffic chaos caused by an overturned mackerel, lobster-trains scuttle along elevated tracks, and such business as Coral Cola, The Gup, and Old Wavy operate.

One of the inhabitants of the reef is Oscar, a lowly tongue-scrubber who works at Sykes' Whale Wash, where whales move along an assembly line having barnacles removed and their skin and teeth scrubbed clean. Oscar dreams of riches and fame beyond his humdrum life.

Arriving late for work, Oscar finds that he's already punched in on the time clock, and realizes he has been helped out by Angie, the angelfish receptionist and cashier at the Whale Wash with whom he is a close friend. He stops by her office to thank her and chat, and exasperates her with his latest get-rich-quick-scheme: bottled water.

Meanwhile, in a sunken ocean liner off the reef, Whale Wash owner Sykes – a porcupine blowfish – is nervously meeting with Don Lino, a great white shark and head of the reef mafia. Lino explains that he's retiring and is handing over control of the reef to his two sons Lenny and Frank. Sykes can understand the choice of the mean, bullying Frankie, but scoffs at the thought of passive, kind-hearted Lenny running the reef. Lino loses his temper and orders Sykes out, telling him that he'll have to start paying protection money if he doesn't want something to happen to his Whale Wash.

As the day progresses, Oscar bemoans his existence shoveling slime in the gaping maw of an endless line of whales. A prank turns unpleasant when a whale is accidentally hit in the eye with a jet of soap and thrashes about in pain. Oscar closes the emergency clamps to hold the whale immobile and squeegees the soap from the whale's eye, shortly before Ernie and Bernie – two Rastafarian jellyfish, and henchmen of Sykes – arrive and hurl him into Sykes' office. To raise the cash to pay of Don Lino, Sykes is calling in his IOUs and Oscar owes him five thousand clams, to be paid back my tomorrow. Oscar protests that is impossible, but Sykes tells him to bring it to the racetrack tomorrow, or else. As Sykes leaves, Bernie stings Oscar in the eye as a warning.

That evening, Oscar mopes on Angie's balcony as she tends to his swollen eye. She can't understand why Oscar always gets himself into these situations, nor his obsession with trying to live at the top of the reef. Oscar recalls his late father, a tongue-scrubber at the Whale Wash for 25 years. Oscar had always thought that working at the wash was the greatest job anyone could do until he took his father's scrubbing broom to school for show-and-tell, and got laughed at. After that, he desperately wanted to be a somebody. Angie tries to explain to him that he doesn't need to live at the top of the reef to be a somebody, and, feeling sorry for him, she tries to help him out by giving him a pink pearl – a precious gift from her grandmother. Oscar is reluctant to take such a valuable object from her, but Angie insists, saying it will get him the money he needs to pay back Sykes.

In the meantime, the great white sharks are dining on Lino's ship. Don Lino, Lenny, and Frankie occupy a table in the corner. Lino praises Frankie for being a killer, but he expresses concern about Lenny, about whom he has been hearing things. Lino plucks a live shrimp from his shrimp cocktail and demands that Lenny eat it in front of him. Lenny refuses and helps the shrimp escape to freedom out the window. Lino is furious and tells Frankie to take Lenny out to show him the ropes – Lenny is going to learn how to be a shark, whether he likes it or not.

The next day, Oscar has pawned Angie's pearl and arrives at South Side Racetrack with the 5,000 clams. Overhearing two fish discussing how the next race is rigged to allow long-shot seahorse Lucky Day to win, Oscar rashly bets all of Sykes' money on it. The boldness of the wager attracts the attention of gold-digging femme-fatale Lola, half-lionfish, half-dragonfish. When Sykes turns up with Ernie and Bernie, he is livid that Oscar has placed a bet with the money he is owed, and Lola, realizing that Oscar isn't the millionaire she imagined, she quickly loses interest in him, calling him a nobody.

In the race on which Oscar has bet, Lucky Day gets off to a bad beginning when his starting gate jams and doesn't open. However, he manages to smash through it and – astonishingly – not only manages to catch up with the pack but begin to draw ahead. The last length sees Lucky Day and Fishfingers neck and neck, before Lucky Day puts on a burst of speed and pulls ahead. A win for Lucky Day seems certain until he wobbles and trips, tumbling in a heap just short of the finish line. Oscar sees his dreams of begin rich and famous evaporate, and Sykes, inflating in anger, tells Ernie and Bernie to find the deepest, darkest hole in the ocean.

Ernie and Bernie take Oscar out into the wasteland surrounding the reef, and, with Oscar tied to a rock, torture him with their glowy stingers. At the same time, Frankie and Lenny approach from the direction of Lino's ship. Frankie tells Lenny it doesn't come any easier than this, and instructs him to eat Oscar. Ernie and Bernie flee as Lenny approaches. Lenny psyches himself up to eat Oscar, but can't go through with it, and tries to fake it by biting through Oscar's ropes and thrashing his tail to stir up a cloud of silt to hide Oscar's escape. But Oscar is confused by Lenny's attempt to save him, and is still there, looking baffled, as the silt settles.

Frankie declares that he has had it up to here with Lenny, and, with a growl, launches himself after Oscar. Just as Frankie catches up with Oscar, he's unexpectedly hit from above by a falling anchor. Horrified, Lenny tosses the anchor aside and cradles his dying brother. Feeling responsible for what happened, Lenny swims off distraught, leaving Oscar along with Frankie’s body when Ernie and Bernie return. Realizing he can become famous, Oscar lets them believe he killed the shark.

Back at the Whale Wash, Oscar is soon telling an increasingly embellished story about what happened, and soon the media is reporting the story. An interview with reporter Katie Current is interrupted by Sykes, who declares himself Oscar’s manager. Oscar is a little dubious, but he and Sykes agree to a 50/50 partnership.

Things are somber back on Lino's ship as Frankie's funeral is held, attended by members of the Five Families – the great whites, hammerheads, leopard sharks, killer whales ([[Orca_(species)|orcas]]), and swordfish (or sailfish). At the wake afterwards, Don Feinberg, the aging don of the leopard sharks, tells Lino about the Shark Slayer, about whom the word is getting around. Lino determines to find out who this shark slayer is.

In the meantime, Oscar rockets to stardom, and holds a lavish party in his new penthouse apartment at the top of the reef. Angie arrives and Oscar shows her the breathtaking view from his balcony. He seems on the verge of proposing to her when they are interrupted by Lola. Now that Oscar really is a somebody after all, she's determined to make him her own, and leads him away from Angie. Back inside the apartment, there is panic as the cry goes up that there are two great whites on the edge of the reef. Oscar reluctantly leaves to take care of the sharks.

Hiding in a bed of kelp from the sharks – who are out searching for the Lenny – Oscar finds the missing shark also lying low. Lenny begs Oscar to take him home. Oscar is appalled by the notion, but when Lenny learns that Oscar has lied about killing a shark, he blackmails Oscar into helping him, pointing out that if he has to go back to Lino, soon everyone will know what really happened to Frankie.

Oscar reluctantly agrees to help, and hides Lenny in a storage shed near the Whale Wash. Oscar sets a few ground rules, worried about what will happen when Lenny gets hungry. Lenny tells him not to worry, he's different from the other sharks. When pressed for details, Lenny reluctantly admits to Oscar he is a vegetarian. He complains that his father will never accept him for who he is, and piteously whines, "What's wrong with me?". Oscar assures Lenny he wishes all sharks were like him, but then learns Lenny's father is head of the shark mob and realizes how much trouble he is in for taking the credit for Frankie's death.

Panicked, Oscar returns to his now-nearly-empty apartment where Sykes is on the phone trading insults with Lino. Lino asks to talk with Oscar and tells him he's going to tear him fin from fin. After Sykes leaves, Oscar finds Lola has been waiting for him. She assures him that all he has to do is show the sharks who’s boss and they'll leave him alone. With the beginning of a plan forming in his mind, Oscar returns to the storage shed to find Lenny.

What he does find is that Angie has discovered the fugitive shark, and he has confessed everything to her. She is furious that Oscar has lied to everybody, especially her. She tells Oscar to tell the truth and Lenny to go home. Neither like the sound of this, and Lenny devises a plan to stage a public fight in which he "dies", thereby solving both their problems.

The plan begins well, with Lenny terrorizing the reef until Oscar arrives and punches him through a billboard. Things take a slight turn for the worse when Lenny, chasing after Oscar, gets a little enthusiastic and accidentally swallows Oscar whole. Realizing what he has done, Lenny begins to gag, on the verge of throwing up. Oscar, inside Lenny's mouth, calms him down and "forces" open Lenny's jaws in a appearance of superhero-like strength. The chase resumes, and, after being "thrown" through a jumbotron screen, Lenny plummets screaming to his "death" down a crevice. In the aftermath of the fight, Lola sidles up to Oscar and gives him a lingering kiss in front of the television cameras. Angie, watching the live news reports back at the Whale Wash, is scared.

In the storage shed afterwards, Lenny is busily painting himself blue. When his shark snout squashed with rubber bands and his gills hidden behind a scarf of caution tape, he intends to pass himself off as Sebastian the Whale-Washin' [[Dolphin]]. When Oscar returns, Angie is furious about Oscar kissing Lola, and asks him if he really believes she would be interested in him if he wasn't rich and famous. Oscar replies that at least she treats him like a somebody, and that no one loved him when he was a nobody. Hurt, Angie yells that she did. Oscar is taken aback, and Angie tells him that, to her, he was a somebody, but now she just sees him as a sham. Oscar tries to mend the situation, but Angie tells him to go away. Oscar leaves sadly, leaving Lenny to comfort a weeping Angie.

Oscar glumly swims around the reef, visiting old familiar places and fondly remembering the fun parts of his simpler life before becoming the Shark Slayer. Returning to his penthouse apartment, he ignores the party going on inside, and, alone, down on the reef from the balcony. He realizes that Angie's right, and when Lola joins him from inside, he tells her that he doesn't think things are going to work out between them. Furious that anyone would dare to dump her, Lola slams him repeatedly against the plate-glass window.

Oscar arrives at the Whale Wash the next day determined to make up with Angie, but he finds out through Sykes that she hasn't turned up to work. A phone call from Luca, Lino's octopus consigliere, reveals that she has been abducted, and that if he doesn't want to see her sleeping with the fishes (the dead ones), he had better present himself at a sit-down in one hour. Oscar resolves to rescue her. Lenny, now working at the Whale Wash in his guise as Sebastian, says he can't just waltz in there and say, "Hi Pop! I'm a dolphin!". Sykes is doubly scared to realize his new employee is Lenny and Oscar isn't a real shark slayer. Oscar muses that the sharks don't know that.

Oscar, Sykes, and the still-disguised Lenny attend the sit-down. Whilst waiting for Lino to arrive, a very nervous Oscar realizes the members of the Five Families are actually terrified of him. Lino enters and regards the fish who has killed both his sons. When he teases Oscar by revealing Angie wriggling on a serving platter, Oscar tries to say he barely knows her. Lola emerges from the shadows and declares he's bluffing, after which Oscar says Lino has nothing, and tells Lenny to take her out – in a flash, Lenny swims down the table and swallows Angie whole (in fact, holding her safe in his mouth). After the kiss, Oscar tentatively questions Lino about what will happen to him after this, but Lino, having regained his son, seems willing to call it a truce. Asked by Katie Current what he's now gonna do, having lost everything he lied so hard to achieve, Oscar looks thoughtful.

The movie ends with Oscar now one of Sykes' partners at the Whale Wash. Over a lengthy musical number, we see the Whale Wash workers dancing as they clean the incoming whales. Lenny and Lino arrive and greet Angie in the cashier's booth, telling her they have bought some new customers – the various members of the Five Families. In the closing scene, Oscar and Angie share a kiss atop a revolving sign near the Whale Wash.

''Shark Tale'' takes place in the underwater world of South Side Reef, a crowded metropolis where streams of fish surge between coral skyscrapers, police dolphins deal with traffic chaos caused by an overturned mackerel, lobster-trains scuttle along elevated tracks, and such business as Coral Cola, The Gup, and Old Wavy operate.

One of the inhabitants of the reef is Oscar, a lowly tongue-scrubber who works at Sykes' Whale Wash, where whales move along an assembly line having barnacles removed and their skin and teeth scrubbed clean. Oscar dreams of riches and fame beyond his humdrum life.

Arriving late for work, Oscar finds that he's already punched in on the time clock, and realizes he has been helped out by Angie, the angelfish receptionist and cashier at the Whale Wash with whom he is a close friend. He stops by her office to thank her and chat, and exasperates her with his latest get-rich-quick-scheme: bottled water.

Meanwhile, in a sunken ocean liner off the reef, Whale Wash owner Sykes – a porcupine blowfish – is nervously meeting with Don Lino, a great white shark and head of the reef mafia. Lino explains that he's retiring and is handing over control of the reef to his two sons Lenny and Frank. Sykes can understand the choice of the mean, bullying Frankie, but scoffs at the thought of passive, kind-hearted Lenny running the reef. Lino loses his temper and orders Sykes out, telling him that he'll have to start paying protection money if he doesn't want something to happen to his Whale Wash.

As the day progresses, Oscar bemoans his existence shoveling slime in the gaping maw of an endless line of whales. A prank turns unpleasant when a whale is accidentally hit in the eye with a jet of soap and thrashes about in pain. Oscar closes the emergency clamps to hold the whale immobile and squeegees the soap from the whale's eye, shortly before Ernie and Bernie – two Rastafarian jellyfish, and henchmen of Sykes – arrive and hurl him into Sykes' office. To raise the cash to pay of Don Lino, Sykes is calling in his IOUs and Oscar owes him five thousand clams, to be paid back my tomorrow. Oscar protests that is impossible, but Sykes tells him to bring it to the racetrack tomorrow, or else. As Sykes leaves, Bernie stings Oscar in the eye as a warning.

That evening, Oscar mopes on Angie's balcony as she tends to his swollen eye. She can't understand why Oscar always gets himself into these situations, nor his obsession with trying to live at the top of the reef. Oscar recalls his late father, a tongue-scrubber at the Whale Wash for 25 years. Oscar had always thought that working at the wash was the greatest job anyone could do until he took his father's scrubbing broom to school for show-and-tell, and got laughed at. After that, he desperately wanted to be a somebody. Angie tries to explain to him that he doesn't need to live at the top of the reef to be a somebody, and, feeling sorry for him, she tries to help him out by giving him a pink pearl – a precious gift from her grandmother. Oscar is reluctant to take such a valuable object from her, but Angie insists, saying it will get him the money he needs to pay back Sykes.

In the meantime, the great white sharks are dining on Lino's ship. Don Lino, Lenny, and Frankie occupy a table in the corner. Lino praises Frankie for being a killer, but he expresses concern about Lenny, about whom he has been hearing things. Lino plucks a live shrimp from his shrimp cocktail and demands that Lenny eat it in front of him. Lenny refuses and helps the shrimp escape to freedom out the window. Lino is furious and tells Frankie to take Lenny out to show him the ropes – Lenny is going to learn how to be a shark, whether he likes it or not.

The next day, Oscar has pawned Angie's pearl and arrives at South Side Racetrack with the 5,000 clams. Overhearing two fish discussing how the next race is rigged to allow long-shot seahorse Lucky Day to win, Oscar rashly bets all of Sykes' money on it. The boldness of the wager attracts the attention of gold-digging femme-fatale Lola, half-lionfish, half-dragonfish. When Sykes turns up with Ernie and Bernie, he is livid that Oscar has placed a bet with the money he is owed, and Lola, realizing that Oscar isn't the millionaire she imagined, she quickly loses interest in him, calling him a nobody.

In the race on which Oscar has bet, Lucky Day gets off to a bad beginning when his starting gate jams and doesn't open. However, he manages to smash through it and – astonishingly – not only manages to catch up with the pack but begin to draw ahead. The last length sees Lucky Day and Fishfingers neck and neck, before Lucky Day puts on a burst of speed and pulls ahead. A win for Lucky Day seems certain until he wobbles and trips, tumbling in a heap just short of the finish line. Oscar sees his dreams of begin rich and famous evaporate, and Sykes, inflating in anger, tells Ernie and Bernie to find the deepest, darkest hole in the ocean.

Ernie and Bernie take Oscar out into the wasteland surrounding the reef, and, with Oscar tied to a rock, torture him with their glowy stingers. At the same time, Frankie and Lenny approach from the direction of Lino's ship. Frankie tells Lenny it doesn't come any easier than this, and instructs him to eat Oscar. Ernie and Bernie flee as Lenny approaches. Lenny psyches himself up to eat Oscar, but can't go through with it, and tries to fake it by biting through Oscar's ropes and thrashing his tail to stir up a cloud of silt to hide Oscar's escape. But Oscar is confused by Lenny's attempt to save him, and is still there, looking baffled, as the silt settles.

Frankie declares that he has had it up to here with Lenny, and, with a growl, launches himself after Oscar. Just as Frankie catches up with Oscar, he's unexpectedly hit from above by a falling anchor. Horrified, Lenny tosses the anchor aside and cradles his dying brother. Feeling responsible for what happened, Lenny swims off distraught, leaving Oscar along with Frankie’s body when Ernie and Bernie return. Realizing he can become famous, Oscar lets them believe he killed the shark.

Back at the Whale Wash, Oscar is soon telling an increasingly embellished story about what happened, and soon the media is reporting the story. An interview with reporter Katie Current is interrupted by Sykes, who declares himself Oscar’s manager. Oscar is a little dubious, but he and Sykes agree to a 50/50 partnership.

Things are somber back on Lino's ship as Frankie's funeral is held, attended by members of the Five Families – the great whites, hammerheads, leopard sharks, killer whales ([[Orca_(species)|orcas]]), and swordfish (or sailfish). At the wake afterwards, Don Feinberg, the aging don of the leopard sharks, tells Lino about the Shark Slayer, about whom the word is getting around. Lino determines to find out who this shark slayer is.

In the meantime, Oscar rockets to stardom, and holds a lavish party in his new penthouse apartment at the top of the reef. Angie arrives and Oscar shows her the breathtaking view from his balcony. He seems on the verge of proposing to her when they are interrupted by Lola. Now that Oscar really is a somebody after all, she's determined to make him her own, and leads him away from Angie. Back inside the apartment, there is panic as the cry goes up that there are two great whites on the edge of the reef. Oscar reluctantly leaves to take care of the sharks.

Hiding in a bed of kelp from the sharks – who are out searching for the Lenny – Oscar finds the missing shark also lying low. Lenny begs Oscar to take him home. Oscar is appalled by the notion, but when Lenny learns that Oscar has lied about killing a shark, he blackmails Oscar into helping him, pointing out that if he has to go back to Lino, soon everyone will know what really happened to Frankie.

Oscar reluctantly agrees to help, and hides Lenny in a storage shed near the Whale Wash. Oscar sets a few ground rules, worried about what will happen when Lenny gets hungry. Lenny tells him not to worry, he's different from the other sharks. When pressed for details, Lenny reluctantly admits to Oscar he is a vegetarian. He complains that his father will never accept him for who he is, and piteously whines, "What's wrong with me?". Oscar assures Lenny he wishes all sharks were like him, but then learns Lenny's father is head of the shark mob and realizes how much trouble he is in for taking the credit for Frankie's death.

Panicked, Oscar returns to his now-nearly-empty apartment where Sykes is on the phone trading insults with Lino. Lino asks to talk with Oscar and tells him he's going to tear him fin from fin. After Sykes leaves, Oscar finds Lola has been waiting for him. She assures him that all he has to do is show the sharks who’s boss and they'll leave him alone. With the beginning of a plan forming in his mind, Oscar returns to the storage shed to find Lenny.

What he does find is that Angie has discovered the fugitive shark, and he has confessed everything to her. She is furious that Oscar has lied to everybody, especially her. She tells Oscar to tell the truth and Lenny to go home. Neither like the sound of this, and Lenny devises a plan to stage a public fight in which he "dies", thereby solving both their problems.

The plan begins well, with Lenny terrorizing the reef until Oscar arrives and punches him through a billboard. Things take a slight turn for the worse when Lenny, chasing after Oscar, gets a little enthusiastic and accidentally swallows Oscar whole. Realizing what he has done, Lenny begins to gag, on the verge of throwing up. Oscar, inside Lenny's mouth, calms him down and "forces" open Lenny's jaws in a appearance of superhero-like strength. The chase resumes, and, after being "thrown" through a jumbotron screen, Lenny plummets screaming to his "death" down a crevice. In the aftermath of the fight, Lola sidles up to Oscar and gives him a lingering kiss in front of the television cameras. Angie, watching the live news reports back at the Whale Wash, is scared.

In the storage shed afterwards, Lenny is busily painting himself blue. When his shark snout squashed with rubber bands and his gills hidden behind a scarf of caution tape, he intends to pass himself off as Sebastian the Whale-Washin' [[Dolphin]]. When Oscar returns, Angie is furious about Oscar kissing Lola, and asks him if he really believes she would be interested in him if he wasn't rich and famous. Oscar replies that at least she treats him like a somebody, and that no one loved him when he was a nobody. Hurt, Angie yells that she did. Oscar is taken aback, and Angie tells him that, to her, he was a somebody, but now she just sees him as a sham. Oscar tries to mend the situation, but Angie tells him to go away. Oscar leaves sadly, leaving Lenny to comfort a weeping Angie.

Oscar glumly swims around the reef, visiting old familiar places and fondly remembering the fun parts of his simpler life before becoming the Shark Slayer. Returning to his penthouse apartment, he ignores the party going on inside, and, alone, down on the reef from the balcony. He realizes that Angie's right, and when Lola joins him from inside, he tells her that he doesn't think things are going to work out between them. Furious that anyone would dare to dump her, Lola slams him repeatedly against the plate-glass window.

Oscar arrives at the Whale Wash the next day determined to make up with Angie, but he finds out through Sykes that she hasn't turned up to work. A phone call from Luca, Lino's octopus consigliere, reveals that she has been abducted, and that if he doesn't want to see her sleeping with the fishes (the dead ones), he had better present himself at a sit-down in one hour. Oscar resolves to rescue her. Lenny, now working at the Whale Wash in his guise as Sebastian, says he can't just waltz in there and say, "Hi Pop! I'm a dolphin!". Sykes is doubly scared to realize his new employee is Lenny and Oscar isn't a real shark slayer. Oscar muses that the sharks don't know that.

What is true, however, that Lenny's vegetarianism is an excellent allegory for homosexuality – he is initially in the closet, afraid to admit it to anybody and is especially afraid that his father will never accept him for who he is. He wonders if he is the way he is because something is "wrong" with him, and eventually "comes out" by confiding with a friend.

''Shark Tale'' takes place in the underwater world of South Side Reef, a crowded metropolis where streams of fish surge between coral skyscrapers, police dolphins deal with traffic chaos caused by an overturned mackerel, lobster-trains scuttle along elevated tracks, and such business as Coral Cola, The Gup, and Old Wavy operate.

One of the inhabitants of the reef is Oscar, a lowly tongue-scrubber who works at Sykes' Whale Wash, where whales move along an assembly line having barnacles removed and their skin and teeth scrubbed clean. Oscar dreams of riches and fame beyond his humdrum life.

Arriving late for work, Oscar finds that he's already punched in on the time clock, and realizes he has been helped out by Angie, the angelfish receptionist and cashier at the Whale Wash with whom he is a close friend. He stops by her office to thank her and chat, and exasperates her with his latest get-rich-quick-scheme: bottled water.

Meanwhile, in a sunken ocean liner off the reef, Whale Wash owner Sykes – a porcupine blowfish – is nervously meeting with Don Lino, a great white shark and head of the reef mafia. Lino explains that he's retiring and is handing over control of the reef to his two sons Lenny and Frank. Sykes can understand the choice of the mean, bullying Frankie, but scoffs at the thought of passive, kind-hearted Lenny running the reef. Lino loses his temper and orders Sykes out, telling him that he'll have to start paying protection money if he doesn't want something to happen to his Whale Wash.

As the day progresses, Oscar bemoans his existence shoveling slime in the gaping maw of an endless line of whales. A prank turns unpleasant when a whale is accidentally hit in the eye with a jet of soap and thrashes about in pain. Oscar closes the emergency clamps to hold the whale immobile and squeegees the soap from the whale's eye, shortly before Ernie and Bernie – two Rastafarian jellyfish, and henchmen of Sykes – arrive and hurl him into Sykes' office. To raise the cash to pay of Don Lino, Sykes is calling in his IOUs and Oscar owes him five thousand clams, to be paid back my tomorrow. Oscar protests that is impossible, but Sykes tells him to bring it to the racetrack tomorrow, or else. As Sykes leaves, Bernie stings Oscar in the eye as a warning.

That evening, Oscar mopes on Angie's balcony as she tends to his swollen eye. She can't understand why Oscar always gets himself into these situations, nor his obsession with trying to live at the top of the reef. Oscar recalls his late father, a tongue-scrubber at the Whale Wash for 25 years. Oscar had always thought that working at the wash was the greatest job anyone could do until he took his father's scrubbing broom to school for show-and-tell, and got laughed at. After that, he desperately wanted to be a somebody. Angie tries to explain to him that he doesn't need to live at the top of the reef to be a somebody, and, feeling sorry for him, she tries to help him out by giving him a pink pearl – a precious gift from her grandmother. Oscar is reluctant to take such a valuable object from her, but Angie insists, saying it will get him the money he needs to pay back Sykes.

In the meantime, the great white sharks are dining on Lino's ship. Don Lino, Lenny, and Frankie occupy a table in the corner. Lino praises Frankie for being a killer, but he expresses concern about Lenny, about whom he has been hearing things. Lino plucks a live shrimp from his shrimp cocktail and demands that Lenny eat it in front of him. Lenny refuses and helps the shrimp escape to freedom out the window. Lino is furious and tells Frankie to take Lenny out to show him the ropes – Lenny is going to learn how to be a shark, whether he likes it or not.

The next day, Oscar has pawned Angie's pearl and arrives at South Side Racetrack with the 5,000 clams. Overhearing two fish discussing how the next race is rigged to allow long-shot seahorse Lucky Day to win, Oscar rashly bets all of Sykes' money on it. The boldness of the wager attracts the attention of gold-digging femme-fatale Lola, half-lionfish, half-dragonfish. When Sykes turns up with Ernie and Bernie, he is livid that Oscar has placed a bet with the money he is owed, and Lola, realizing that Oscar isn't the millionaire she imagined, she quickly loses interest in him, calling him a nobody.

In the race on which Oscar has bet, Lucky Day gets off to a bad beginning when his starting gate jams and doesn't open. However, he manages to smash through it and – astonishingly – not only manages to catch up with the pack but begin to draw ahead. The last length sees Lucky Day and Fishfingers neck and neck, before Lucky Day puts on a burst of speed and pulls ahead. A win for Lucky Day seems certain until he wobbles and trips, tumbling in a heap just short of the finish line. Oscar sees his dreams of begin rich and famous evaporate, and Sykes, inflating in anger, tells Ernie and Bernie to find the deepest, darkest hole in the ocean.

Ernie and Bernie take Oscar out into the wasteland surrounding the reef, and, with Oscar tied to a rock, torture him with their glowy stingers. At the same time, Frankie and Lenny approach from the direction of Lino's ship. Frankie tells Lenny it doesn't come any easier than this, and instructs him to eat Oscar. Ernie and Bernie flee as Lenny approaches. Lenny psyches himself up to eat Oscar, but can't go through with it, and tries to fake it by biting through Oscar's ropes and thrashing his tail to stir up a cloud of silt to hide Oscar's escape. But Oscar is confused by Lenny's attempt to save him, and is still there, looking baffled, as the silt settles.

Frankie declares that he has had it up to here with Lenny, and, with a growl, launches himself after Oscar. Just as Frankie catches up with Oscar, he's unexpectedly hit from above by a falling anchor. Horrified, Lenny tosses the anchor aside and cradles his dying brother. Feeling responsible for what happened, Lenny swims off distraught, leaving Oscar along with Frankie’s body when Ernie and Bernie return. Realizing he can become famous, Oscar lets them believe he killed the shark.

Back at the Whale Wash, Oscar is soon telling an increasingly embellished story about what happened, and soon the media is reporting the story. An interview with reporter Katie Current is interrupted by Sykes, who declares himself Oscar’s manager. Oscar is a little dubious, but he and Sykes agree to a 50/50 partnership.

Things are somber back on Lino's ship as Frankie's funeral is held, attended by members of the Five Families – the great whites, hammerheads, leopard sharks, killer whales ([[Orca_(species)|orcas]]), and swordfish (or sailfish). At the wake afterwards, Don Feinberg, the aging don of the leopard sharks, tells Lino about the Shark Slayer, about whom the word is getting around. Lino determines to find out who this shark slayer is.

In the meantime, Oscar rockets to stardom, and holds a lavish party in his new penthouse apartment at the top of the reef. Angie arrives and Oscar shows her the breathtaking view from his balcony. He seems on the verge of proposing to her when they are interrupted by Lola. Now that Oscar really is a somebody after all, she's determined to make him her own, and leads him away from Angie. Back inside the apartment, there is panic as the cry goes up that there are two great whites on the edge of the reef. Oscar reluctantly leaves to take care of the sharks.

Hiding in a bed of kelp from the sharks – who are out searching for the Lenny – Oscar finds the missing shark also lying low. Lenny begs Oscar to take him home. Oscar is appalled by the notion, but when Lenny learns that Oscar has lied about killing a shark, he blackmails Oscar into helping him, pointing out that if he has to go back to Lino, soon everyone will know what really happened to Frankie.

Oscar reluctantly agrees to help, and hides Lenny in a storage shed near the Whale Wash. Oscar sets a few ground rules, worried about what will happen when Lenny gets hungry. Lenny tells him not to worry, he's different from the other sharks. When pressed for details, Lenny reluctantly admits to Oscar he is a vegetarian. He complains that his father will never accept him for who he is, and piteously whines, "What's wrong with me?". Oscar assures Lenny he wishes all sharks were like him, but then learns Lenny's father is head of the shark mob and realizes how much trouble he is in for taking the credit for Frankie's death.

Panicked, Oscar returns to his now-nearly-empty apartment where Sykes is on the phone trading insults with Lino. Lino asks to talk with Oscar and tells him he's going to tear him fin from fin. After Sykes leaves, Oscar finds Lola has been waiting for him. She assures him that all he has to do is show the sharks who’s boss and they'll leave him alone. With the beginning of a plan forming in his mind, Oscar returns to the storage shed to find Lenny.

What he does find is that Angie has discovered the fugitive shark, and he has confessed everything to her. She is furious that Oscar has lied to everybody, especially her. She tells Oscar to tell the truth and Lenny to go home. Neither like the sound of this, and Lenny devises a plan to stage a public fight in which he "dies", thereby solving both their problems.

The plan begins well, with Lenny terrorizing the reef until Oscar arrives and punches him through a billboard. Things take a slight turn for the worse when Lenny, chasing after Oscar, gets a little enthusiastic and accidentally swallows Oscar whole. Realizing what he has done, Lenny begins to gag, on the verge of throwing up. Oscar, inside Lenny's mouth, calms him down and "forces" open Lenny's jaws in a appearance of superhero-like strength. The chase resumes, and, after being "thrown" through a jumbotron screen, Lenny plummets screaming to his "death" down a crevice. In the aftermath of the fight, Lola sidles up to Oscar and gives him a lingering kiss in front of the television cameras. Angie, watching the live news reports back at the Whale Wash, is scared.

In the storage shed afterwards, Lenny is busily painting himself blue. When his shark snout squashed with rubber bands and his gills hidden behind a scarf of caution tape, he intends to pass himself off as Sebastian the Whale-Washin' [[Dolphin]]. When Oscar returns, Angie is furious about Oscar kissing Lola, and asks him if he really believes she would be interested in him if he wasn't rich and famous. Oscar replies that at least she treats him like a somebody, and that no one loved him when he was a nobody. Hurt, Angie yells that she did. Oscar is taken aback, and Angie tells him that, to her, he was a somebody, but now she just sees him as a sham. Oscar tries to mend the situation, but Angie tells him to go away. Oscar leaves sadly, leaving Lenny to comfort a weeping Angie.

Oscar glumly swims around the reef, visiting old familiar places and fondly remembering the fun parts of his simpler life before becoming the Shark Slayer. Returning to his penthouse apartment, he ignores the party going on inside, and, alone, down on the reef from the balcony. He realizes that Angie's right, and when Lola joins him from inside, he tells her that he doesn't think things are going to work out between them. Furious that anyone would dare to dump her, Lola slams him repeatedly against the plate-glass window.

Oscar arrives at the Whale Wash the next day determined to make up with Angie, but he finds out through Sykes that she hasn't turned up to work. A phone call from Luca, Lino's octopus consigliere, reveals that she has been abducted, and that if he doesn't want to see her sleeping with the fishes (the dead ones), he had better present himself at a sit-down in one hour. Oscar resolves to rescue her. Lenny, now working at the Whale Wash in his guise as Sebastian, says he can't just waltz in there and say, "Hi Pop! I'm a dolphin!". Sykes is doubly scared to realize his new employee is Lenny and Oscar isn't a real shark slayer. Oscar muses that the sharks don't know that.

Oscar, Sykes, and the still-disguised Lenny attend the sit-down. Whilst waiting for Lino to arrive, a very nervous Oscar realizes the members of the Five Families are actually terrified of him. Lino enters and regards the fish who has killed both his sons. When he teases Oscar by revealing Angie wriggling on a serving platter, Oscar tries to say he barely knows her. Lola emerges from the shadows and declares he's bluffing, after which Oscar says Lino has nothing, and tells Lenny to take her out – in a flash, Lenny swims down the table and swallows Angie whole (in fact, holding her safe in his mouth). Oscar teases the sharks and he almost gets away with it, but the taste of Angie on his tongue is making Lenny nauseous and he vomits over the meeting table. Hearing Lenny say, "I couldn't take it! The taste was killin' me!", Lino realizes the dolphin at the end of the table is his son. He is bewildered, yet relieved, that Lenny is still alive, then embarrassed about how the situation makes him look in front of his mob underlings, and finally furious that Oscar has not only took Frankie away, but also turned Lenny into a dolphin.

With surprising speed, Lino throws himself at Oscar with the intent of eating him. Oscar escapes from the ocean liner and lures Lino to the Whale Wash, where he tries to trap him in the emergency whale clamp, but in the confusion, he pins Lenny instead. Continuing to play cat-and-mouse with Lino, Oscar eventually traps the great white in the middle of the Whale Wash's various robotic sponges. A gathering crowd, including a TV crew with Katie Current, hails Oscar as a hero once again and lift him aloft, chanting his name. Angie sees everything's going to go on just as before, and, having had enough, begins to swim away. Seeing he's about to lose Angie again, Oscar screams an admission that he isn't a real shark slayer. He explains to Lino that an anchor killed Frankie and that neither he nor Lenny had anything to do with it. Lino can't understand why Lenny would then run away, and Lenny miserably explains it was because he always wanted him to be more like Frankie, and that he could never be the shark he wants him to be. Oscar admonishes Lino, telling him everyone loves Lenny just the way he is, and why can't he? He further tells Lino he shouldn't make the same mistake he has, and lose someone important. Lenny looks hopefully at his father, who relents, and asks to be released so he can forgive his son. Oscar withdraws the traps, and Lino hugs Lenny. As this happens, Oscar is approached by Angie, and he awkwardly tells her than he has realized he didn't need the top of the reef, and everything he wanted was already in front of him. She asks him about being a somebody, and he sheepishly tells her that he's a nobody without her. Angie throws her arms around Oscar and kisses him, to the crowd's approval. After the kiss, Oscar tentatively questions Lino about what will happen to him after this, but Lino, having regained his son, seems willing to call it a truce. Asked by Katie Current what he's now gonna do, having lost everything he lied so hard to achieve, Oscar looks thoughtful.

The movie ends with Oscar now one of Sykes' partners at the Whale Wash. Over a lengthy musical number, we see the Whale Wash workers dancing as they clean the incoming whales. Lenny and Lino arrive and greet Angie in the cashier's booth, telling her they have bought some new customers – the various members of the Five Families. In the closing scene, Oscar and Angie share a kiss atop a revolving sign near the Whale Wash.
