"Whose Lion is it Anyway?" or "Whose Lion" is an improv panel hosted by Alkali Bismuth and SemJay. The panel got its start at Midwest FurFest 2006 when the panel was hosted by SemJay and Dronon. Dronon was unable to make Midwest FurFest the following year, so SemJay picked Alkali as his replacement. Alkali and SemJay have hosted the show together ever since. When Alkali and SemJay cannot make it to a convention together, the one that's going will host the show alone, but with the help of close friends. The original show at Midwest FurFest 2006 had about 60 attendees; more recently at Anthrocon 2010 over 300 people attended. Dronon occasionally hosts (or co-hosts) improv panels sporadically as opportunity permits (frequently at Furry Migration), although not always under the "Whose Lion" banner.

Like the name suggests, the show is based off of the television show "Whose Line is it Anyway?", except in this version the entire audience is encouraged to participate. Some people just come to watch, but many join in on the various games. "Whose Lion" is always scheduled late at night and is considered an 18+ panel due to adult humor and language.

Whose Lion has been at every Midwest FurFest since 2006. In 2009 they added Furry Connection North and Anthrocon to their list of conventions and in 2010, IndyFurCon was added. They also managed to have a show at Further Confusion 2010 despite a misunderstanding with the convention. The panel has also experimented with streaming their shows over the internet.

Games played
Throughout the two to three hour panel, there are many improv games played. Normally, SemJay and Alkali will come up with a list of games to play before the show, but if there is time they will take suggestions from the audience. These games are sometimes played differently from how they were originally intended to be played. The following is a list of some of the games played.

*Questions Only - Audience members form two lines and go head to head in a game where you are only allowed to speak in questions. As soon as a person says something that isn't a question, or takes to long to respond, they are buzzed out and the person behind them in line takes their place. "Questions Only" is a very good warm up game and is generally the first game played at "Whose Lion".
*What Are You Doing? - Audience members line up in two lines and person from each line goes up at a time. One person will start acting something out (e.g. tying their shoes) and when the second person asks "What are you doing?" they say something completely different from what they are doing (e.g. mowing the lawn) and the second person has to start acting that out. The first person exits the stages and the person behind them in line goes up. They ask the second person "What are you doing?" and again that person will tell them something totally different and the third person will act it out, and so on. Like "Questions Only" it is a very good warm up game.
*Props - Audience members create different things with the provided "props" (which are usually made of left over fursuit construction material). they can use one or both props to create a scene/object.
*The Dating Game - One host or audience member is sent out into the hallway and 4-5 "dates" are hand picked from the audience. Each 'contestant' is given a personality or quirk to act out. When the person in the hallway comes back, they have to ask the 'contestants' questions "dating show"-style, and then try to guess who they are supposed to be.
*Party Quirks - One host or audience member is sent out into the hallway. Again, 4-5 "guests" are picked out the audience. They are each given a quirk that the "Party Host" (the person in the hallway) will have to guess. If a party host is having a hard time guessing, sometimes a panel hosts will pretend to call the party host in their home to give them hints.
*World's Worst - Before the show, a helper will go through the audience as everyone is filing into the panel. One of the things they ask if for ideas for "World's Worst" (e.g. world's worst kindergarten teacher or world's worst furry convention theme). When it's time to play this game, anyone who wants to participate stands up front and waits for the various World's Worsts to be read. If they have an idea for the joke, they step forward and act out their version of what the think the "world's worst" is.
*Whose Line - Two to four participants pick two pieces of paper out of a hat and are given a scene to act out. Each slip of paper has a short phrase on it, but the participants are not allowed to read what's on it until they incorporate the slips into the scene. In "Whose Lion"'s version of the game, the phrases on the slips of paper are actually things Alkali and SemJay have said throughout the convention. The lines are almost always out-of-context which leads to hilarious scenes, and the audience questioning the humorous phrases.
*Sex Degrees of Separation - If you haven't been to a Whose Lion panel, chances are you haven't played this game. Sex Degrees is a game that got it's beginnings when SemJay was in high school. A friend of hers came up with the idea, but never made set rules for it. At AnthroCon 2010, with her friend's blessing, SemJay brought the game to life. Using a similar idea to the Six Degrees of Separation theory, this game proves that you can link any subject to something sexual. In the game, Person 1 will come up with a subject that is totally unrelated to sex. Person 2 will pick a subject that is related to Subject 1, but not related to sex. This pattern is followed until the 6th person, who has to come up with something that is related to both subject 5 and sex. Subject 6 is the ONLY subject that can be about sex. Each group of six gets three turns, and must switch around between turns so Person 1 and Person 6 are not the same.

Other
*Barnyard
*Two Truths and a Lie
*60-Second Fairy Tales
*Alphabet
*Actor's Nightmare
*Sit, Stand and Lean
*Irish Drinking Song
*Sound Effects
*Horatio Caine One-Liners
*Superheroes

Dronon's games tend to include some of the above as well as:

*Murder Chain - Only by using gestures and speaking in nonsense words, Person A has to convey three pieces of information to a Person B: a location, a profession, and a method of death. Person B then kills person A. Except now it's Person B's turn to convey it to Person C, and so on. (The participants wait outside the performance room to avoid spoilers.)
*Colliding Realities - Two people, each thinking the sketch is located in a different place, and they don't know what the other person's location is.
*Five Words - Two people start off with a vocabulary of only one word they can say, and gradually get more until they have five.
*Crisis Situation - Participants form two lines. The two people at the front present each other with a crisis and an unrelated object, then must solve the other person's problem using their own object.
*Scenes from a Hat - Odd sketch title suggestions are collected and acted out.
*Word-at-a-time Expert - A group of people on stage pretend they're a single person with an unusual area of expertise. The audience asks them questions, which they reply to, each person taking turns by saying one word each.
*Slide Show
*Group Sculpture
*Film Styles
*Commercials
*Living Props

Dronon's games tend to include some of the above as well as:

*Murder Chain - Only by using gestures and speaking in nonsense words, Person A has to convey three pieces of information to a Person B: a location, a profession, and a method of death. Person B then kills person A. Except now it's Person B's turn to convey it to Person C, and so on. (The participants wait outside the performance room to avoid spoilers.)
*Crisis Situation - Participants form two lines. The two people at the front present each other with a crisis and an unrelated object, then must solve the other person's problem using their own object.
*Zip, Zap, Zoop - A concentration-based, tag-like game involving a lot of pointing. Players are eliminated as they make mistakes until a show-down with the last three people.
*Scenes from a Hat - Odd sketch suggestions are collected ahead of time, drawn from a hat, and acted out.
*Word-at-a-time Expert - A group of people on stage pretend they're a single person with an unusual area of expertise. The audience asks them questions, which they reply to, each person taking turns by saying one word each.
*Old Job, New Job - A person has a new job, but what they used to do at their old job still has a lingering effect on their work.

The: replying to Spirou

I'm wondering if this page and a couple of others are factual/relevant and could be worked into other already-existing pages. I've been in the fandom since the early 90s and I don't remember any organized group rallying themselves under a banner called TBOF or SOF or any consistant, well-defined use of the phrase Golden Age of Furry Fandom. There were certainly individuals and people who were friends with each other who shared attitudes about the fandom, and had individual ideas and maybe a personal ideology, but to call them ideological groups seems to be trying to label vague clusters of individual attitudes as something more sinister.

When I do online searches for these terms, all I find are Usenet newsgroup posts made years later, and it feels like an attempt at ideological historical revisionism. It's like picking out all the people who didn't like cats in the fandom and saying, "Then there was an ideological group called ACF (Anti-Cat Furries) who would frequently talk about how cats simply held no appeal to them." In the current fandom we've still got people who are don't like this or that aspect of the fandom - that's a given constant - but most of them don't organize themselves into anything coherent and the people who disagree with them don't create acronyms for something that isn't there.

Where the pages are factual is that there were people who took issue with various aspects of the fandom and sometimes aired their opinions in a derogatory way. But I don't see a point in having a Wikifur page devoted that kind of thing unless it was really something major. Like Richard Chandler's essay, that was major, that could have its own page, because it indeed caused a large disturbance in the pond.

Essentially I think we should remove the TBOF and SOF acronyms because the groups didn't exist, but some general attitudes did, and we should mention differences in attitude in pages where they're appropriate. The History page already sums it up succinctly: "A schism which had been developing in the fandom for some years ..." and "Backlash appeared from various other parties ..." etc. Maybe add a general description of growing disgruntlement over the 1990s to the Burned Furs page, citing individual complaints without making up groups to put them under.

As for "Golden Age of Furry Fandom", I don't mean to say the term was never used, but I think everyone who used it (or some other term like it) all had different conceptions of "the good old days" - maybe replace the Golden Age page with one called "Nostalgia in Furry Fandom", or eliminate it entirely. The zine and comics fans of the late 80s didn't like the new wave of FurryMuck people coming into "their" fandom; the "fandom is about art" people didn't like the wave of lifestylers, and so on and so on. I've heard pre-2000 fursuiters complain about people jumping on the fursuiting bandwagon for popularity and attention, that they don't respect the art of public performance, and so on and so on. It never ends. :-)

So yeah, TBOF, SOF, Golden Age of Furry Fandom, Furry Renaissance - all these pages seem to be largely pointing at each other and could just as easily be summed up on already-existing pages that differences of opinion existed through the history of the fandom. They largely seem to be made-up terms that have never seen widespread use. Why they're here, I don't know, but it feels more like individual, non-neutral opinion to attribute specific stuff into the fandom's history that were typical disagreements that you get in any fandom's internal politics. - The 12:12, 6 May 2011 (EDT)

:"Essentially I think we should remove the TBOF and SOF acronyms because the groups didn't exist, but some general attitudes did" - Not quite. The group did exist, on AFF, ICQ, Usenet, Furrymuck,... All thought small footprint on that era, they were a discussed, and know as part of the past of the furry fandom. They did not have the large presence that the net could have promoted (Burned furs, CYD, etc,...)., but its small presence does not indicate the whitewashing from the lore of furry because they not "really something major". - Spirou 22:21, 6 May 2011 (EDT)

::Tl;dr They existed, as I viewed them personally, including their creation (and for some) their demise - Spirou 22:26, 6 May 2011 (EDT)

:::Well, I take a bit of offense at having the term "whitewashing" used. I was on FurryMuck, AFF and Usenet since 1992 (but not ICQ) and I simply don't remember anyone using those terms. If you say you encountered them, I'll trust your word, as other edits you've made around the wiki show you've been in the fandom for a long time as well. Either my memory's become selective over time or I skipped over wherever the terms appeared. - The 00:17, 7 May 2011 (EDT)

Notes
*On the 1st night of the convention, Nov 21st 2008, everyone from both the hotel and Convention Center were forced to evacuate after the fire alarms were set off, indicating a possible fire. After an investigation, it was found someone decided to smoke in their hotel room which was designed as a non-smoking area, unintentionally causing the smoke detectors to set off, which in turn set off the fire alarms in both venues. Everyone was eventually allowed back in after standing outside in the frigid 28 degree weather for up to half an hour.

*Due to space limitations, the Artists Alley had somewhat fewer tables than were available the previous year. A lottery system, which had been successfully implemented the previous year and was similar to that used for Anthrocon's Artists Alley, was used to distribute seats in the Alley.

*The art show featured 1,066 works by 68 artists. 524 pieces were sold, with 53 going to art auction. Total revenue from the show was $22,928.
Midwest FurFest (MFF) is an annual furry convention based in Illinois which has been running as a separate entity since 2000.

Midwest FurFest got its start as the furry track for Duckon, a Chicago-based science fiction convention. The furry track was started at Duckon 3 in 1994 and was headed up by Robert King. The track grew larger each year and it was estimated that by Duckon 8 (1999) between one-quarter and one-third of the attendees were there due to interest in the furry track.

The track ran into problems because it was running out of room to expand without costing other parts of Duckon programming space and time. It was decided that the best course of action was to spin off into a new convention.

Thus Midwest Furry Fandom, Inc. was created and Midwest FurFest was born, to take place in November 2000, on
the weekend before Thanksgiving (a date that became traditional). The parting was amicable, and Duckon lent a good bit of expertise and manpower to help make the first year of Midwest FurFest a success.

Since then, the convention has grown from 388 attendees in 2000 to 2,040 in 2009, making it the 3rd largest furry convention. It has raised over $92,000 for various wildlife charities.

Midwest FurFest is a production of Midwest Furry Fandom, Inc., which holds Midwest Furfest and furfest as service marks.

History
2000
For its inaugural year, Midwest FurFest (typically abbreviated as MFF) made its home at the Sheraton Chicago Northwest, in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Robert King served as chairman, and many of the popular elements of the furry track at Duckon made appearances: Artists Alley, The Furry Variety Show (in its traditional Friday-at-midnight timeslot), and the Saturday evening dance. MFF also endeavored to carry on Duckon's fine tradition of a well-stocked con suite, making sure its attendees were well-fed and happy. MFF was proud to welcome Robert and Margaret Carspecken, Rapid T. Rabbit, and Derrick Dasenbrock as its initial Guests of Honor. In its first year, a total of 388 fans turned out to welcome furry fandom's newest convention. MFF's attendees showed their generosity by helping to raise $3,522 for the three designated charities that year: Wolf Park, Valley of the Kings big cat sanctuary, and Chicago House.

2001
In 2001, Robert King was again chairman and MFF was once again at the Sheraton Chicago Northwest. 511 attendees helped to push the boundaries of the meeting space there to close to bursting. 2001 also saw the premiere of 2 the Ranting Gryphon in his first convention performance ever. Guests of Honor included Mary Hanson-Roberts, Jessica Willard, and Matt McCullar. Uncle Kage served as auctioneer to help the charity auction raise $6,800 for Animals for Awareness.

2002
The next year was a big jump for the convention, both in attendance and space as MFF moved a few miles south to the Hyatt Regency Woodfield in Schaumburg, Illinois. The new location was a huge hit among the 685 attendees, with its close proximity to Woodfield Mall, many restaurants, and other amenities. Jim Doolittle (aka Aureth) took the reins as convention chairman. Animals for Awareness was once again the chosen charity, and the charity auction and contributions at their table raised a total of $6,088. Programming continued to expand, assisted by Guests of Honor Ursula Husted, Ysengrin Blackpaw, and D.C. Simpson.

2003
Aureth again chaired the convention in 2003, still at the Hyatt Woodfield. Thomas K. Dye, M.C.A. Hogarth, and DBruin were the Guests of Honor. The charity auction and donations to Animals for Awareness totaled $6,500 that year. 800 furry fans turned out that year, establishing a steady growth curve for the convention. At the end of the convention, Aureth followed the "two years and out" tradition established by Robert King and turned the reins over to Dan Hauschild (aka Takaza J. Wolf). Mary Jo Pehl of Mystery Science Theater 3000 appeared.

2004
2004 was another banner year for MFF at the Hyatt Regency Woodfield, with 959 attendees. A new charity, Furry Friends Foundation, was the recipient of $7,000 raised by donations, the charity auction, and a unique, one-time-only joint show featuring Uncle Kage and 2 the Ranting Gryphon together on stage for almost two hours. The Guests of Honor that year were Ursula Vernon, ScribbleFox, and David Gilbert. This was the first year that MFF reached outside furry fandom for a Guest of Honor and Mr. Gilbert wrote afterwards that he had a fantastic time.

Gene Breshears, Tincrash, and Kenket were the Guests of Honor in 2005. The convention continued to grow, breaking the thousand-furry mark for the first time with 1,066 in attendance. Wildlife in Need, a small wildlife rehabilitation organization, was the recipient of $6,800 in donations. The highlight of the Charity Auction was the auctioning off of an evening with 2 and Uncle Kage entertaining the winner and their friends in a private performance; in the end, two groups who were bidding against each other pooled their funds and the performance went for $650. This was Takaza's last year heading the convention, as he passed the chairmanship over to Linnaeus for 2006. It was also announced that Midwest FurFest would be returning to the Hyatt Regency Woodfield in 2006.
The theme was Midwest FurFest County Fair. 1,422 people were in attendance. Fursuit parade attendance was at 213 participants, a record at the time. The Charity Auction raised $5570 for the Safe Haven Wildlife Refuge, not including donations. $13,048.96 in all was raised for the refuge.
Linnaeus chaired the convention again, which took place November 16-18, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency Woodfield in Schaumburg, Illinois. The Guests of Honor included illustrator and artist Erika "Chilly" Rosengarten, artist and costumer Jill0r, and author Will Sanborn. The theme was Critters on the High Seas. Attendance was 1,689, and the fursuit parade had 286 participants. Midwest FurFest was held from November 21st to November 23rd in 2008. Duncan da Husky was the convention chairman, and the convention moved to a new venue: The Westin Chicago North Shore in Wheeling, Illinois. The theme was North to Alaska.

Total attendance was 1,992, and over $15,000 was raised for their charity, Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy. The Art Show generated $22,928 in revenue.

2,040 attended the 10th anniversary of MFF, to which all previous guests of honor were invited. No complaints were voiced at the feedback session, but art show sales also suffered from the economy, despite an increase in the number of pieces. An experimental theatrical event - Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind - gained a positive reception, while $12,971 was raised for the charity KARE For Wildlife.

At closing, it was announced that the convention would move to the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Rosemont, Illinois in 2010.

* The hotel was being used at the same time by an Amway convention.
* The security manager of the hotel took a great dislike to Confurence, and when a maid found a cartoon-style fake plastic bomb on Scott Malcomson's bed, the police were summoned. For the remainder of the convention, all CF4 attendees had to show their con badges whenever they entered the hotel. The convention had no desire to use the Red Lion Inn again.
C-ACE, founded in 2002 as the Canadian Anthro and Cartooning Expo, later known as the Canadian Art and Cartooning Expo then simply as "C-ACE", was a convention that took place usually in the early summertime in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

C-ACE was relatively small with a learning focus on all kinds of artistic material: visual art, writing, costuming, music and others, in anthro and other genres. The convention maintained a "clean" rating, requiring artwork and other materials to be of PG-13 at the very most; yiff art was not allowed.

History
C-ACE 2002
The first C-ACE took place August 16-18, 2002 at the Courtyard Ottawa Downtown with an attendance of 110 people. Though the venue would later change twice, the event was always held in Ottawa. The Comic Artist Guest of Honour was Shawntae Howard, the Instructor Guest of Honour was Scott Ruggels. Two Newcomer Guests of Honour were also announced, for up and coming Canadian artists Amy Pronovost and Anya Schwartz. "Sketch Pad Lounge" proved a popular hangout.
This was the last time it was called the "Anthro and Cartooning Expo", though a large part of the convention continued to attract furries. The artist guests of honour were Spunky and Heather Bruton..This was almost as many attendees as 10, and a little over 100 more than a new convention in California known as Further Confusion.

The charity auction raised $3,600 for the Great Valley Nature Center.
Albany AnthroCon 1997 was the first Anthrocon, held 3-6 July, 1997, at the Omni Albany Hotel in Albany, New York.

The convention was originally scheduled to be held at the Desmond Albany Hotel, closer to Albany International Airport; however, it was discovered in June 1997 that the convention's contact at the hotel -- who had, at that point, resigned to move out of state -- had not made the appropriate arrangements, and the hotel was not in a position to host the con. The convention was almost cancelled before hard work on the part of Chip Unicorn led to the move to the Omni.

The Guests of Honour for AAC 97 were Daphne Lage, Watts Martin, and David L. Pulver.

The convention drew 500 attendees in its first year, despite the hotel shift. Pre-registration before New Year's Day 1997 was a mere $15, with quad hotel rooms $75/night.
The new convention chairman this time was Duncan da Husky.

* Theme: North to Alaska
* Attendance: 1992
* Fursuit parade: 358

Guests of Honor
The Guests of honor were fursuit performer Lucky the Evil Dog, artist Darc, writer Matt Sowers of Code Name: Hunter, and artist Foxfeather.

Convention charity
The convention raised $15,000 for the convention charity, Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy.

Location
The date and the location of the convention were reserved for the closing ceremonies of Midwest FurFest 2007., where it was announced by a video created by Cheetah that the convention would be moving to a new venue, as function space at the Hyatt Regency Woodfield was limited, attendance had grown rapidly, and the main hotel and its overflow were getting tight on rooms.

The new location is approximately 15 miles from the old venue. It has significantly more function space, although fewer rooms. The dates and room rates are locked in for three years, although both the convention or hotel have the option to cancel the contract each year.
