History
The proposal for an alternative art gallery to Yerf, with differing content and admission standards, was first made on the Yerf message boards in the autumn of 2003. This suggestion met with considerable support, and the code, rules and appearance of the gallery were developed over the following months, initially under the working title of "Dook", which was changed to "ArtVark" for obvious reasons. :) The site's message forums went live on 10th September 2004, the first applications were accepted on 12th September 2004, and the first picture was uploaded on 16th October 2004. ArtVark is hosted on Tet Solfire's eponymous server.

It was announced in November 2005 that ArtVark would be put into "hibernation" - no new applications are to be accepted, but the existing galleries will remain open until the site can be brought back to full operational status.

Art policy
ArtVark is a site for non-adult work; sexually-suggestive and violent images are prohibited. Originally, ArtVark had a strict policy of restricting its content to furry images, with human characters being forbidden. However, this proved unpopular, and the restriction was removed in May 2005.

One controversial aspect of ArtVark is its rating system. All applicants had their work assessed using a detailed numerical scale, and each sucessful artist is given a grade of B, B+, A, or A+ depending on their score. This grading system lead to criticism on charges of "elitism", and the complex review system did, on occasion, lead to delays in artist's applications being processed. There were also bruised egos and outrage from some fans when the Grading System was altered so that four artists who had been previously accepted with a B were now rejected with a C.
Swandog (aka Xenia Eliassen) is a fantasy/furry artist, a 33yo mom of 2 boys, is married to Sayh, lives near Oslo, Norway (though was born and raised a Texan) and has been a furry/otherkin all her life, but never knew there was a term for such, until she discovered the fandom several years back. She has had a gryphon personal furry/fursona since the late 80's (a bald eagle/wolf mix back then), which later evolved into Swandog, the mute swan/saluki sighthound gryphon, due to her passion for swans and salukis, and the fact that being a predator never quite suited her, in spite of her gryphon obsession. She is a furry lifestyler and is relatively active in the fandom, but sticks to small groups of online and local friends she knows, being rather shy. She is also a fursuiter, and is currently having her fursuit made by ScribbleFox of OneFurAll.com. She runs the Norpaws, Eurofurs, Fursonals and FurryReaders communities on LiveJournal, and occasionally attends Anthrocon and hosts furmeets like CabinCon. She has several online galleries can be contacted through any of them (her Deviantart gallery is the one most updated and her homepage has the most art).

WikiFur is soon to have its Community Portal redesigned to provide more functionality, communication and organisation for projects within the wiki. As such, the Community Portal is going to be given a new name.

What is that name? Well, we don't know yet and we'd like you to vote on the suggested names! You may vote once for each name you approve of (apart from your own). Voting will continue until the 2000th article, or a clear majority, whichever comes first. For the Village Pump, I suggest that we call it 'The Park.' I mean, how many furryMUCKs make a park of some sort the central area? ===Criteria for the new name===
The name should be something furry related and it can also be a little humorous too if you want. The WikiFur: namespace remember doesn't have to be official like the main article namespace. It can also run on a little theme if you want as we are also going to have a forum and discussion area within the Portal (akin to Wikipedia's Village pump), you can suggest a name for that area too if you wish to accompany your suggestion.

If you want some examples, WikiNews has "The Watercooler"; Memory Alpha, the Star Trek wiki, has "Ten Forward"; the Homestar Runner wiki has "The Stick".

Process for picking a new name
The process for picking a new name will be as follows:
#Enter your personal suggestion below, sign your edit to show who you are, these will be checked against the edit history of this page.
#Once enough submissions are in, a vote will be held for the favourite name.
#The favourite name will be selected and development on the new Portal will begin.
We are aiming to have the new portal up in time for the 2000th article so get your entries in now!

World Tree

Tevildo: /* Contributing artists */ Um - spelling again, this time done properly :)

World Tree is a role-playing game set in a world where several species of mostly-anthropomorphic beings (the primes) are the norm. It was created by Bard Bloom and Victoria Borah Bloom and released in 2001. It was nominated for Best Anthrompomorphic Game and Best Anthropomorphic Published Illustration in the 2001 Ursa Major Awards.

World Tree's focus is species and civilization. It is not by design a "hack'n'slash" RPG; although combat plays a part, intelligent role-playing is likely to get you just as far (or further) in most campaigns. Similarly, the creative use of spontaneous magic - available to virtually everyone, including all eight prime species - can be a deciding factor.

World Tree civilization is not unlike human civilization - there are cities, guilds, merchants, schools, and even prostitution (with a twist). However, the pervasive nature of magic, the lack of abundant metals and the diversity of species on the World Tree necessarily dictate a few changes.

The world
World Tree is set (naturally) on a gigantic tree, with branches tens of thousands of miles long and hundreds of miles wide. The main trunk itself is two hundred miles in diameter - the area of the topmost nine branches is called Ketheria, and is the home to prime civilization. Lower branches become progressively colder, bleaker, and more monster-ridden (for increasingly terrestrial definitions of "monster" - the prime definition is "not a prime"). It is not known if there is a root to the World Tree, but if so, it is likely to be hundreds or thousands of branches down.

The gods
The World Tree (along with all its inhabitants) was created by seven gods (the Verb gods), who are assisted in running it by fourteen other gods (the Noun gods). They are the source of magic in the world - the appropriate verb gods are invoked for the action to be performed by the magic, and the noun gods for the things it is to operate on. For example, a Creoc Pyrador spell to create heat or flame would involve Virid and Flokin respectively.

It is an accepted fact that the gods exist. They are mostly seen only through their magic; some occasionally take a more active role in the world.

Prime species
Most inhabitants of the upper branches of the World Tree are members of one of eight prime species:

*Cani are doglike; fiercely loyal, with a love for hierarchy
*Herethroy are cricketlike, with hard shells and usually placid natures
*Orren are otterlike; water-loving, carefree, and prone to wild rushes of activity
*Rassimel are raccoonfolk; obsessive, yet social (with those who share their obsessions)
*Khtsoyis are crude, levitating cephalopods, with a penchant for violence and petty crime
*Gormoror are bearlike; rough and honourable to a fault - think Klingons, but furry
*Sleeth are non-anthropopmorphic felines, about the size and temperment of panthers
*Zi Ri are rare, elegant, oft-feathered, immortal, dragonlike hermaphrodites

Herethroy, Cani, Orren and Rassimel are the most numerous species, with Khtsoyis, Goromoror, Sleeth and especially Zi-Ri being rarer. Cani, Rassimel, Khtsoyis, and some Orren prefer the cities, while Herethroy, Gormoror, Sleeth and the lazier Orren tend to stay outside.

<div style="clear:both" />

Contributing artists

Though he is best known for his depictions of hyper-endowment, it is also worth noting the attention to detail that goes into the artwork, and also, just as importantly, the humour. Doug is also known for his quick wit and love of word play. The unnofficial unit of squickage, the milliWinger, is named after him.

There is a rumor that suggests him as an animator for the acclaimed Nickelodeon's cartoon series, Spongebob Squarepants. This rumor is incorrect to a point, as he has indeed worked as an offsite freelance BG artist for the same company for their "Dora the Explora" and "Angry Beavers" shows.

Doug Winger presently resides in Santa Ana, California, USA, with fellow artists Steve Martin and Bob Guthrie.

To squick is to offend, surprise, exasperate, or shock any person (usually) not related to the furry fandom, with extreme displays of unacceptable furry behavior, which would sometimes include overt sexual acts.

These incidents normally occur during events where furs and mundanes come in contact with each other in large numbers. One example is furry conventions, where they must mingle in the same hotel facility hosting the event. Even though some furries take pride in "squicking the mundanes," this type of behavior is not condoned by the majority of the fandom, or convention staff.
If any of David's friends or people who knew him would care to add some details about him and his life, it would be appreciated. Looking at some of the old Usenet postings, he plainly had a large number of people who cared about him, and I'm sure his life was enriched by that.--Duncan da Husky 20:12, 7 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Therianthropy

Tevildo: /* Beliefs and origins */ Link fixed

Therianthropy is a generic term for any transformation of a human into another animal form, either as a part of mythology or as a spiritual concept. The word is derived from Greek therion, meaning "wild animal", and anthrōpos, meaning "man".

Modern subcultural use of the term
Beliefs and origins
In recent times, a subculture has developed that has adopted the word therianthropy to describe a sense of intense spiritual or psychological identification with a non-human animal. Members of this subculture typically refer to themselves as therianthropes or therians. The word weres was also common at one point, in reference to shapeshifting creatures of legend such as werewolves, weretigers and the like, but is less common these days. One reason for the waning use of the term "were" might be the growing awareness of the fact that it simply means "man", and not "part human, part --", as it is too often assumed to mean by writers of fiction.

The Usenet group alt.horror.werewolves was founded in 1992, and in its earliest days the members discussed fictional shapeshifters. Some posters began to publicly claim that they considered themselves to be partially non-human animal. A number of these people were only joking, but enough people were serious about it that it became a trend. Others who professed the same beliefs soon joined the group. The earliest therians called themselves lycanthropes, but as that word more accurately describes wolf-people, therianthropes was chosen as a more inclusive term.

Those within this subculture who identify with a spiritual understanding of this phenomenon may believe that they have the spirit or soul, in whole or in part, of a non-human animal, and their beliefs often overlap to some extent with aspects of shamanism or totemism. Some also draw inspiration from stories of shapeshifting in Celtic, Norse and Native American myths, among others. The term spiritual therianthropy is often used to differentiate this definition of therianthropy from others.

Those who prefer a psychological explanation may simply describe it as having a non-human animal side to their personality or nature, with some believing that it may be due to some sort of unusual neurophysiology, as is thought to be the case with syndromes like attention deficit disorder and autism. Others believe that their genes are partially non-human, but this explanation is unproven, scientifically implausible, and not favored by many. Most of those who support the explanation of atypical neuropsychology, however, do not appear to regard it as innately dysfunctional.

In either case, the identification with the non-human animal may be partial, as in those who regard themselves as having both human and non-human attributes, or complete, as in those who regard themselves as essentially non-human animals in human bodies. The terms species dysphoria and transspeciesism have occasionally been used to refer to the latter phenomenon, in parallel with the concepts of gender dysphoria and transsexuality.

Most therians identify with a single type of non-human animal, but there are some who identify with more than one &mdash; sometimes related animals, as in several different species of feline or canine, for example, but sometimes completely dissimilar animals. Those who identify with all members of one family &mdash; for instance, someone who claims to have characteristics of all felines &mdash; is called a cladotherianthrope. The species of non-human animal with which a particular therian identifies is sometimes referred to as that person's theriotype or phenotype. The term phenotype was originally more common but has fallen into disuse because it also refers to physical appearance.

The majority of therianthropes identify as feline or canine, often big cats and wolves (see a survey here), but there are also reptiles, avians, other mammals, and insects. Some skeptics argue that, because of the preponderance of large carnivores, most therians are only faking and are purposefully choosing impressive animals for ego-based purposes. There are also some individuals who identify with mythical species (e.g. dragons, elves, gryphons, centaurs and so forth), but those who fit more in the otherkin community than the therian community.

Therianthropes may describe their nature manifesting in terms of their cognitive processes, their outlook on life, their inner reactions and instincts, their senses, or through their physical body, though claims of actual physical variations from the norm tend to be regarded with skepticism both within and outside the subculture. The human and non-human aspects of the self may co-operate or conflict, leading to happiness or unhappy dysfunction, and may take much self-discovery to begin to understand or accept. Because this is a personal self-perception, the ways in which a person describes his or her self-identification as a therianthrope vary considerably.

A controversial aspect of therianthropy is the subject of shifting (a shortened word for shapeshifting), which generally refers to any manner by which a therianthrope's nature may become evidenced internally (to themselves) or externally to others. Few people within the subculture doubt that shifts of mental and emotional perception may occur, some therianthropes also claim to experience a physical change to their appearance, a subject known as physical shifting ( or P-shifting). Many in the therianthrope subculture doubt physical changes actually occur. The overwhelming majority of those outside of the culture deny that any real shifting, mental or physical, occurs.

Subculture
Therianthropy as a subculture does not have any central dogma or tenets, nor any recognized authority. However, those who have been around for a long time are generally listened to, though less out of any perceived spiritual authority than simple acknowledgement of experience. The word greymuzzle is often used tongue-in-cheek to describe these people.

While there is no offline social organization, there exist a community of therians with many diverse outlooks on the concept, including Christians, Pagans, and atheists. As could be expected, disagreements are frequent, and the many online forums and chat rooms of the community each have their own "atmosphere," ranging from total acceptance to scornful cynicism. There have been intermittent "real-world" gatherings, referred to as howls, but their purpose is primarily social.

Therianthropy vs. clinical lycanthropy
Spiritual therianthropy is not automatically the same as clinical lycanthropy, a mental illness in which an individual believes he or she belongs to or can change to another species. While some therianthropes believe they can take on the mindset of their "other side" in what is referred to as a mental shift, they believe that they retain control during these transformations and are no greater danger to themselves or others. The term contherianthropes is sometimes used for those who do not claim to mentally shift but believe they have human and non-human sides which are mixed up into a single unchanging whole.

Therianthropy vs. furry fandom
Therianthropy should not be confused with the Furry Fandom, though some intermixing of the groups does occur. As a general rule, to an extent, therianthropes are more focused on the sense of an animal within, an animal side to their nature, or spiritual concepts; by contrast, furries are more commonly focused on furry art and/or role-playing related to anthropomorphic non-humans. There is some overlap with those who identify themselves with each group or view the other positively, as well as those in each group who view the other negatively. For instance, some furries view therianthropy as "taking it too far," while therianthropes may assert that furries are frivolous and don't pay attention to the true nature of animals.

Megaplex is a regional furry convention held in Orlando, Florida. The convention began in March, 2002, as Pawpet Megaplex; the convention officially dropped the "Pawpet" from the name with Megaplex 3 in 2004.

The convention's goal, as stated in its mission, is to "provide for our membership a celebration of interactive arts and performance, with a primary focus on anthropomorphics and fantasy". In this regard, much of Megaplex's programming has focused on fursuiting, puppetry, improvisation, and other types of performance. The convention had live performances from acapella group Toxic Audio in 2003 and 2004, and hosted the Potpourri of Puppets, a regional puppetry event, in 2005.

History
Pawpet Megaplex came into being as a replacement for Furry Spring Break, which was held in 2001. FSB was unable to secure hotel space for a second convention in 2002, and folded. In its stead, Pawpet Live Experiences, Inc. was incorporated, and plans were put into overdrive to create a replacement convention. With only three months to plan, the convention committee managed to pull it off, and the first Pawpet Megaplex was held on 8-10 March 2002, at the Ramada Resort and Convention Center in Orlando, FL.

For Pawpet Megaplex 2 (21-23 March 2003), the convention moved to the movie-themed Sheraton Studio City Resort, closer to Universal Studios Florida. The convention had its first guest of honour, Susan Rankin, also known as "Sue Deer" and the creator of the A Doemain Of Our Own webcomic. This was also the first year Toxic Audio appeared.

Megaplex 3 (19-21 March 2004) returned to the Sheraton Studio City, with guest of honour Trace Beaulieu, of MST3K fame (Dr. Clayton Forrester, Crow T. Robot). The convention's theme played heavily on the fact the name of the con could be abbreviated to "MP3"; this was seen in promotional materials, as well as on-site artwork and the con book.

With Megaplex 4 (11-16 March 2005), the convention moved into larger quarters at the Sheraton World Resort, right next door to the SeaWorld Orlando theme park. The guest of honour was professional puppeteer John Kennedy. As part of the convention, Orlando's Potpourri of Puppets was hosted on Sunday night. The convention's theme, taking into account the move and the fact Interstate 4 goes through Orlando, was a "road trip".

The fifth anniversary Megaplex will be held at the Sheraton World Resort on 17-19 March 2006. The con's theme salutes the B-movies of days gone by, lending MP5 the subtitle of "...The Horror!". Events and guests are still being finalized at this time.

Staff
Megaplex's Board of Directors is chaired by Karl F. Meyers. The rest of the Board includes:

* John "K.P." Cole - Programming Director

Tevildo: Spelling, etymology

Anthropomorphic is a word meaning "like a human." It is used to describe a well-known concept called anthropomorphism: ascribing human characteristics to a non-human being or object. Typically, this is used in reference to deities, which are usually given the form of humans. However, the word can apply to any non-human thing, including animals, plants, and inanimate objects.

Fairly recently, the furry fandom has co-opted the word for their own use. In the fandom it is used solely for one thing: bipedal animals. Such upright-walking furries are usually called anthro or morphic for short, and art featuring furry characters is sometimes called anthro art. This is somewhat ironic, as anthro is actually short for anthropo, a prefix that literally means "having the face of a man."

Visually, there are several trends that are often used in the furry version of anthropomorphism, including, but not limited to:
* Human form
* Human mental capacity
* Animal trappings (fur, paws, digitigrade or unguligrade legs, vaguely or completely animal sex organs)

A more proper word for an animal/human blend is zoomorphic, but most furries are unaware of this term.

Tevildo: Typo corrected

We all know that WikiFur is great, but if we want it to get even greater we need to continue to get new people involved with the site. Put simply, if they don't know about WikiFur or why they should visit and contribute, they won't. This leads to the dreaded p-word . . . promotion!

Objectives
Specifically, our objectives should be to get people to:

* Link to WikiFur from their websites
* Link to WikiFur articles on pages about relevant topics
* Talk about and link to WikiFur on forums, perhaps including it in their signatures
* Promote the idea that WikiFur is "the" place to come for information about the furry fandom, at least as a starting point

All of these things can be done by you right now, so get cracking. ;-)

Really, though, we need to encourage others to follow our example. To get people to do this, we need to give them an excuse to talk about WikiFur, and give them material to use when they do.

Statistics
Another important part of promotion is the use of figures to demonstrate WikiFur's growth. A some people are impressed by size, and "WikiFur has X hundred thousand words" tends to make these people think it must be a worthwhile project. Here are some pages that can help:

* WikiFur:About, statistics section
* WikiFur:Stats in comparison
* WikiFur:Statistics Record

Writing and featuring good articles
Probably far more people are impressed by quality articles that are fun to read, yet also informative, and which present their topics in an unbiased tone. This is where featured articles come in. Identification and promotion of the best of WikiFur sets the standard for other articles.

Of course, it's important to actually come on here and create and improve such articles, too! People won't stick around a site where there's no content, and search engines don't think too highly of stubs, either. Fortunately we seem to have made a good start there. :-)

Ideas
WikiFur Digest (tentative name)
The most important thing to do is to get people interested enough to click a link to WikiFur. To do this we should give them highly interesting tidbits and lots and lots of links for them to click through to find out more. People do click those links - Special:Popularpages has those pages linked to from elsewhere right at the top.

I have personally had very good results by posting a semi-regular progress report in the form of a digest - see From the Creatures Wiki. I think this could work well for WikiFur, too.

WikiFur:WikiFur Digest

2000th article celebrations
I think we should try and do as much as possible for this, if possible. We've been quiet for a while now (probably too long), so we should have a lot to say. Plans include a redesign of the front page and community portal, and renaming of the latter.

WikiFur:Promotion/2000th article celebration

Furry-themed adverts
We've got to be able to do something like Wikipedia's ads. Maybe something to appeal to the geeks in the fandom involving fursuits, plushies and/or computers? Or the PafCon sign? We could use them to link to featured articles or to the front page. --GreenReaper 06:13, 7 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Past promotions
* WikiFur - A home for the furry community - the idea that started it all . . . but it only took us to 100 articles
* WikiFur: By and for the furry community - this really got the ball rolling, posted in several LJ communities

Promotional artwork
It should be obvious, but if you put something in here, expect it to be used by other people to promote WikiFur, most likely without specific attribution.

Freefall is a popular webcomic written and drawn by Mark Stanley and hosted at Purrsia. It is a humorous science fiction story detailing the misadventures of the starship Savage Chicken and its crew: Sam Starfall, a lovable alien con artist; Helix, a childlike robot; and Florence Ambrose, a genetically engineered "Bowman's Wolf" (i. e. an anthropomorphic canine).

Stanley began writing and drawing the strip on March 30, 1998 as a feature for the occasional furry zine, Yarf!, with the intent of telling the actual story behind the characters. The comic is updated three times a week, and it celebrated its thousandth strip in August 2004. It is in black and white, but the first 388 strips are also available in fan-colored versions. Some characters from Freefall also appear at the Cross Time Cafe.

Plot outline
The plotline focuses on the life of Florence, a hard-working and honest technical engineer, after she is hired to work for the shady, less-than-ethical Sam. Since the beginnings of the strip, Florence has worked to repair Sam's spaceship and actually get it flying again -- while at the same time trying to keep her sanity in the wake of Sam and Helix's trouble-making.

Sam's reputation as a no-good low-life is known far and wide across the curiously named colony planet "Jean", where the story takes place, even to the point where the local authorities know that if anything bad goes wrong in their society, Sam probably had a hand in it. Sam wears a humanoid environment suit with a goofy face, but he has hinted that his true appearance is squid-like.

Freefall's plot has been criticised by some as slow-moving. The comic's seven years (in 2005) of thrice-weekly strips has so far covered only a few days' activity in the story.

Trivia
Robots in the Freefall universe are sometimes programmed with the same Three Laws of Robotics that Isaac Asimov made famous in his stories, but their artificial intelligence is well developed, and they have a lot of autonomy, which helps them cope with a universe that has other intelligent species besides the humans and robots from Asimov's stories. It is implied that "Three Law Robots" are not created anymore, and modern AI's have more sophisticated safeguards.

A running gag throughout the comic is the reaction of the robots when they first meet Florence. Since the Bowman's Wolf is a brand new species, the Freefall robots do not recognise her, and their first reaction is invariably to throw their arms out wide and shout "doggy!". The effect can be "kinda freaky" when a lot of them do it at once. But despite this childlike behaviour, the Freefall robots have developed a great respect for Florence, especially after she risked her life to rescue two robots from destruction during a hurricane. Because the memories of most of the robots on "Jean" are networked together, all the robots on the planet are now aware of Florence's deeds and are desperate to help her in any way they can.

Freefall is noted as being one of the more scientifically accurate science fiction web comics available today. Author Stanley has stated he intends to keep the science in the comic as realistic as possible without relying on deus ex machina (or "magic") devices such as "warp drive," "artificial gravity," or "transporter beams."

An in-joke for Star Trek fans is that the Savage Chicken's registry number is 1071-CCN - the reverse of the Starship Enterprise's NCC-1701.

Gene Catlow is a furry comic strip by Albert Temple and Tawana Gilroy. The authors are often featured in the comic as their fursonas, Gene Catlow and Catswhisker.

Plot
The plot takes place in a fictional universe where not only humans are intelligent, but also furries and a species referred to as animen. Also as the plot moves along, many forms of technology gain 'self-awareness'. In that universe, humans used to be the dominant species, having furries as their pets (or slaves). However, in an economic revolution, furries achieved autonomy and could have their own economically and politically stable country.

The comic runs in that scenario, reconstructing these events and dealing with some of the "loose ends" of that situation. Subjects like prejudice, racism, tolerance, power and forgiving are dealt with. Later on, animen are introduced as major characters of the plot, bringing further explanation of the plot's past and present.

Tevildo: /* Pornography in furry fandom */ Added quantitive, if old, statistics

Pornography is a word commonly used to describe sexually explicit imagery in artwork, photography, film, and writing. In its original definition, it meant "writing about prostitutes" and was derived from the ancient Greek term for a writer who chronicled the lives of prostitutes. The word was first used in English in the 18th century.

The exact scope of what is called pornography is not well-defined: some people would classify all nude figures as pornography, while others only consider photographed or filmed sex acts pornography. Most people take a more moderate approach, considering the intent along with the content of the work. A common method for deciding if a work is pornographic ("obscene") is the Miller test.

Within the furry fandom, most explicit artistic or written depictions of sexual acts are considered pornography. Images or descriptions of single characters or groups of characters not explicitly engaging in sex acts but prominantly displaying sexual organs (especially in a state of arousal) are also often considered pornographic. Pornography featuring furry characters is called furry porn or "yiff."

Pornography in furry fandom
Within the furry fandom, pornographic art and writing is common. There are a wide variety of online furry art and writing archives that allow or encourage pornographic art and stories, including Yiffstar, VCL, and FurAffinity. Age-restricted areas are popular in furry MUCKs, and the first adults-only furry MUCK, Tapestries MUCK, is the most popular furry MUCK by attendance.

Furry pornography is often stereotyped as homosexual, but this is frequently not the case. While the percentage of bisexual or homosexual furries appears to be higher than that in the general population, a majority of furry pornography appears to be heterosexual. A detailed survey by Tevildo of postings to the fur.artwork.erotica newsgroup between April and December 2001 revealed 45.6% of pictures to be "gay" themed and 48.9% to be "straight" themed.

Furry pornography commonly depicts species popular among the furry fandom, as many furry porn artists enjoy depicting their own personal fursonas in sexual activity, either with a fantasy mate or the fursona of a person to whom they are attracted in real life. Some pornographic artists draw generic characters as well, though these are usually species chosen for their sexual characteristics or stereotyped promiscuity, such as foxes, wolves, and horses.

Fetish imagery catering to various paraphilias seems to appear with significant frequency in furry porn. BDSM, vore, pregnancy fetish, costume play, infantilism, inflation, rape fetish, and other fetishes are often depicted in furry pornography, though the characters engaging in these fetishes are invariably anthropomorphic animals. Most of these are not specific to the furry fandom, but merely furry expressions of them.

Transformation, in which humans turn into animals or furries transform into a different type of furry, is also popular in furry porn and regular furry art alike. While fetish porn is frequently attested to be unusually common in furry fandom, it is, again, impossible to obtain a precise percentage of fetish pornography compared to other forms of furry pornography.

Controversy
Often, members of the fandom and critics alike speculate that adult content makes up the majority of the fandom. The opposite point of view, voiced, in particluar, in 2 Sense shows, claims that this is caused by the cognitive bias: since pornography is not tabooed in the furry community, its relative percentage may be even smaller than in the mundane world, but the fact that it gets more exposure makes it appear to be a larger chunk.

No scientifically credible estimates of the exact percentage of pornographic content compared to family-friendly content in the furry community exist to date.

The Yerf Newsgroups were a Usenet-like hierarchical set of chat groups created to provide both Yerf members and non-affiliated users with specific topic areas, protected from the rest of Usenet (In short, based on the same reasons for which the Furrynet hierarchy was created.)

The news server came online in early 1999, after parting ways with the old news.purrsia.com server, with the help of Tugrik d'Itichi, which facilitated the allocation space for the Unix machine hosting it, plus the necessary bandwidth to run it, with Farix and Revar providing hardware and personnel support. Scotty Arsenault was in overall charge of the whole project, after taking over Ratman's duties (he would be graciously endowed with the title of "Honorable Founder," for all the work he committed to the project up to this point). Later on, Dingo and Dusty were added to the staff.

This server, and the groups contained within, were used to discuss matters relating to both Yerf artists, visitors, and the furry community in general in a civil forum (in theory.) (Their opinion, not Wikifur's.) There was little moderation and many flamewars broke out over issues of Burned Fur alignment and personal drama, but there were also fun bandwagons wherein the artists would draw their characters reacting to other Yerf artists' characters. Unfortunately, it ceased operations in July 2002, being retired in favor of a web forum format. The intended idea of archiving the old newsgroup postings "in the near future" were put on long hold, then permanently, with the crash, on December 27, 2004, of the Yerf main server, which resulted in the total data loss of all information within, including the archived news server.
