Anthrochat is an IRC network which was founded by Simba in March 2004. As of March 2008 it has seven servers (five in the USA, one in the UK and one in Germany) and an average of about 430-450 connected users.

History
Portions of this section will probably be merged into a separate page detailing the FurNet/Anthrochat split.

Simba founded Anthrochat in response to the differences of opinion between himself and the administration of FurNet. In late 2003/early 2004, trolls, usually congregating in the channel #safurs, were dealt with by forcible disconnect. This quickly degenerated into a series of challenges to IRCop authority and subsequent network-wide bans of large swaths of users that were found objectionable by FurNet administration.

Simba, an IRCop of FurNet at the time, disagreed with this form of administration and argued for the right to freedom of speech on IRC. FurNet's administrators did not agree, Simba was removed from duty as an IRCop. FurNet administration published the FurNet Code of Conduct

Simba put out a call for volunteers to create a new, uncensored IRC network which became known as Anthrochat. Anthrochat's Mission Statement is essentially to be an unmoderated, uncensored medium where the IRCops' sole responsibility is to ensure the physical integrity of the network. Censorship, social mores, and personal tastes are relegated to the channel operators of individual channels, and no network-wide enforced decency standards or code of conduct exists. FurNet continues to enforce common decency standards, which some consider subjective to the views of the IRCops online making them at the time. To this day, feelings about the whole split are somewhat sore, and users typically identify with one network or the other, though some connect to both simultaneously.

Anthrochat presently runs a version of the UnrealIRCD server using Anope services. The change in codebase from what Furnet was using was received so positively, particularly because of the vhost feature that allows users to request customized hostmasks, that Furnet itself has mimiced Anthrochat's lead by instituting the same IRC daemon and services package.

From the network's founding in 2004 until the end of 2006, Anthrochat's userbase remained at an average of approximately 250-300 connected users. Usage increased over the course of 2007, and in January 2008 there were an average of approximately 384 users connected.

Criticism
Anthrochat has also been criticised for its lack of rules. A frequent complaint is that the network's laissez-faire attitude allows malicious users to abuse IRC features to harass new users, who do not know how to deal with these problems. The inaction on the part of the administrators is perceived as irresponsible by some Anthrochat regulars, who do not wish to see the network descend into anarchy. A perception held by some users is that the network has become a haven for internet trolls.

As an example, #atrium, the entry channel for the web-based client, is routinely patrolled by users who verbally attack and scold newbies that have just joined. Although the channel is also populated by users who try to help the new players adjust to the sudden violent outbursts, it still causes many prospective members to leave the network immediately. Simba nonetheless maintains a no-ban policy on the channel. More recently, trolls have begun to hijack the nicknames of new users when they quit. Following this, when those users reconnect, they are disconnected from the network repeatedly by the nickserv 'ghost' command. Administrators have been unwilling to combat this, and have generally suggested to the affected users that they should just choose another nickname.

FurNet (IRC)

Taris Quickpaw: Added #furryEmpire to list

:For other definitions of FurNet, please see the disambiguation page.

FurNet, a major furry IRC network, was created to replace Yiffnet after it was shut down in 2001. It is the most popular furry IRC network at present - between 1534 and 2000 users are connected to its seven servers at any one time (as of 2009 June 27). With its large user base and a wide selection of established channels (856-904 visible channels and 927-975 reported channels during 2009 June 26 and 27), it tends to attract the majority of furs new to IRC.

FurNet's web site includes a list of European, American and Australian servers which you can connect to, and links to suitable software for a variety of platforms.

For political reasons, the channel #furry, which one might expect to be a premier channel on a furry IRC network, is often virtually empty and idle, a victim of the dispute which led to the formation of Anthrochat.

Taris Quickpaw:

Again, as noted before, Taris Quickpaw was the initial article creator; yours Taris, comes from an un-matching IP, and keeps removing those two lines. If indeed you are the real "Taris Quickpaw", please send one of the Sysops a verifiable email stating such. Hope this helps - Spirou 06:33, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Im not entirely sure how to do that. what email should i send, and if i'd created an account before, i dont remember it, or the password... 8 September 2009
