Anthrocon, or just AC, is a furry convention held yearly during the summer in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. It is one of the largest furry conventions, with an attendance of 13,644 in AC 2023.

History
The convention was founded in 1997 as Albany AnthroCon, which itself an offshoot of the Furry Halloween parties held by Aloyen Youngblood; when attendance pushed triple digits, he decided to book a hotel, and organized it as a convention in 1997 with the aid of local friends, Points, Rigel, and others. In its first year, it had approximately 500 attendees.

In late 1998-1999, the chairmanship of the convention was transferred to Dr. Samuel Conway by Points, and they formally organized the group as Anthrocon Inc., and later renamed the convention to "Anthrocon", and relocated it to Pennsylvania. Its first venue was the Hilton Hotel of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania in 1999 and 2000. Due to a rapid increase in attendees, it was forced to relocate to the larger Adams Mark Hotel of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2001, where it became the largest furry convention ever held, with 1,457 attendees.

Attendance continued to grow, and by 2004 it was 2,406. Attendance in 2005 dropped slightly to 2,373, due in part to higher parking fees, and a different and unfamiliar hotel, which was the Wyndham Franklin Plaza in downtown Philadelphia, and possibly due to Hurricane Dennis's effect on the southern United States which closed many airports and prevented people from traveling.

Attendance increased again in 2006 with the move to the David Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, reaching 2,489. In 2008, total attendance reached 3,390. In 2010, it increased with 4,238 attendees and four official convention hotels. Growth for the convention has historically averaged 14% yearly.

Since 1997, the Anthrocon Charity Auction has donated a total of $240K+ to local charities.

Security for the convention has been provided by the Dorsai Irregulars from 2002 until 2019.

Current location and timeslot
Due to the unforeseen sale and closure of the Adam's Mark Hotel in November 2004, AC chose the Wyndham Franklin Plaza in Philadelphia as the site for 2005 and announced that they would be moving there for the next year. In 2006, Due to scheduling conflicts, the convention had to temporarily leave its normal July timeslot and was held on June 15-18. In 2007, it was held July 5-8 at the same location.

The 2006 move to Pittsburgh was envisioned by AC's Board of Directors before the sale of the Adam's Mark Hotel took place, due to AC's increasing attendance. AC began soliciting people's opinions about moving to Pittsburgh in October 2004. At the time, the convention was already too big for any affordable hotel in Philadelphia, and the Adam's Mark had the most convention space of any hotel of its size in the city before its demolition. The closing of the Adam's Mark simply moved those plans up a year.

While some were opposed to the move, most were supportive of it. Many attendees who supported the move lived out of Pennsylvania and the move made little difference to the trip there.

Leadership
The chairman of the convention is Dr. Samuel Conway (also known as Kagemushi or Uncle Kage by attendees), who oversees AC's operations with the help of staff and volunteers who donate their time and energy throughout the weekend to assist the multitude of small tasks that arise.
Incorporation and Trademarks
Anthrocon, Inc. was incorporated as a non-profit organization on June 25, 1998, and registered as a 501(c)(7) social and recreation club in the state of Pennsylvania (entity 2823650). This classification differs from the 501(c)(3) status of Midwest Furry Fandom and Anthropomorphic Arts and Education, most notably, donations are not tax-deductible to their donors, but in return, the company has more flexibility about its operations, and more leeway to restrict access to non-members, since it's not a club.

Applications to register the word "Anthrocon" and the 'Anthrocon paw' as US trademarks were filed on September 18 and November 12, 2006. According to these filings, the word "Anthrocon" was first used on February 1, 1997, while the paw logo was used from June 30, 1998, onwards.
Anthrocon, or just AC, is a furry convention held yearly during the summer in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. It is one of the largest furry convention, with an attendance of 13,644 in AC 2023.

Trivia
* The choice of Toonseum was made with consultation of the furry community via a LiveJournal post by Rigel. It has so far been the only (fandom-approved) exception to the "animal-related" charity rule.
Anthrocon (AC) is a furry convention held yearly during the summer in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Formerly the world's largest furry convention, with an attendance of 7,544 in AC 2017. Later during that same year, it was surpassed by MFF.

In late 1998-1999 the chairmanship of the convention was transferred to Dr.

The 2007 move to Pittsburgh was envisioned by AC's Board of Directors before the sale of the Adam's Mark Hotel took place, due to AC's increasing attendance.

Many attendees who supported the move lived out of Pennsylvania that the move made little difference to the trip there.

Leadership
The chairman of the convention is Dr. Samuel Conway (a.k.a. Kagemushi or Uncle Kage by attendees), who oversees AC's operations with the help of staff and volunteers who donate their time and energy throughout the weekend to assist the multitude of small tasks that arise.
Incorporation and Trademarks
Anthrocon, Inc. was incorporated as a non-profit organization on June 25, 1998 and registered as a 501(c)(7) social and recreation club in the state of Pennsylvania (entity 2823650).

According to these filings, the word "Anthrocon" was first used on February 1, 1997, while the paw logo was used from June 30, 1998 onwards.
He is originally from Philadelphia, PA, so it was only a matter of time before he returned to his home state to visit for Anthrocon.

Scott "Talyn" Williams has been fandom-aware since 1997, but was not physically active in local group or convention activities until 2004.

In 2008, he became co-lead of the Logistics department for Anthrocon, responsible for the physical belongings owned or rented by Anthrocon during its convention period, which he ran alongside Cryo Cyberwolf.

In 2022, he become the Director of Convention Operations of Anthrocon as the position became available, there was no backfill, it required occupancy, and the remainder of Operations staff were too smart to accept the position.

While department operations generally have made things smoother and less stressful for all others involved in the Anthrocon operation, there is the rare occurrence as told by Uncle Kage, where a cart of "STUFF!" was left behind in a service corridor due to a miscommunication between departments. Logistics now goes to great lengths to ensure this event does not repeat itself. Despite this, the moniker "STUFF!" remains present and is now a lighthearted alternate name for the department.
Talyn is a former moderator of 757-Furries, a fur group local to the Hampton Roads, Virginia, area. His primary duty was to oversee the other moderators, stepping in when one is unavailable or requires additional input on any given situation, or when press exposure occurs with local media, and aid with event planning. He stepped back from his duties in January 2016 due to increased workload and work travel in his professional life.
Anthrocon is the world's largest furry convention, with an attendance of 5861 in 2014. It is held each summer in Pennsylvania, USA.

History
The convention was founded in 1997 as Albany AnthroCon, itself an offshoot of the Furry Halloween parties held by Aloyen Youngblood; when attendance pushed triple digits, he decided to book a hotel, and organized it as a convention in 1997 with the aid of local friends Points, Rigel and others. In its first year, it had approximately 500 attendees.

In late 1998-9 the chairmanship of the convention was transferred to Dr. Samuel Conway by Points, and they formally organized the group as Anthrocon Inc., renamed the convention simply "Anthrocon", and relocated it to Pennsylvania. Its first venue was the Hilton Hotel of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania (1999 and 2000). Due to rapidly increasing membership numbers it was forced to relocate to the larger Adams Mark Hotel of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2001- when it became the largest furry convention ever held, with 1,457 attendees.

Attendance continued to grow: by 2004 it was 2,406. Attendance in 2005 dropped slightly to 2,373, due in part to higher parking fees, a different and unfamiliar hotel (the Wyndham Franklin Plaza in downtown Philadelphia), and possibly due to Hurricane Dennis's effect on the southern United States which closed many airports and prevented people from traveling.

Attendance again began to increase in 2006 with the move to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the David Lawrence Convention Center, reaching 2,489. In 2008 total attendance topped three thousand at 3,390, and in 2010 exceeded four thousand with 4,238 attendees and four official convention hotels. Growth for the convention has historically averaged 14% a year.

Since 1997, the Anthrocon Charity Auction has donated more than $86,000 to animal-related charities.

Security for the convention has been provided by the Dorsai Irregulars since 2002.

Current location and timeslot
Due to the unforeseen sale and closure of the Adam's Mark Hotel in November 2004, Anthrocon chose the Wyndham Franklin Plaza in Philadelphia as the site for its 2005 convention. In 2005, Anthrocon announced that they would be moving to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for the 2006 convention. Because of scheduling conflicts, the convention had to temporarily leave its normal July timeslot and was held June 15-18 in 2006. The 2007 convention was held July 5-8 at the same location.

A 2007 move to Pittsburgh was actually envisioned by Anthrocon's Board of Directors before the sale of the Adam's Mark Hotel took place, due to Anthrocon's increasing attendance. Anthrocon began soliciting people's opinions about moving to Pittsburgh in October 2004.

Many attendees who supported the move lived so far away from Pennsylvania that the move made little difference to the trip there.

Current leadership
The chairman of the convention, Dr. Samuel Conway (nicknamed Kagemushi or Uncle Kage among attendees), oversees the operations of the Anthrocon with the help of staff and a number of volunteers who donate their time and energy throughout the weekend to assist the multitude of small tasks which arise.

Anthrocon, Inc. was incorporated as a non-profit organization on 25 June 1998 and registered as a 501(c)(7) social and recreation club in the state of Pennsylvania (entity 2823650). This classification differs from the 501(c)(3) status of Midwest Furry Fandom and Anthropomorphic Arts and Education - most notably, donations are not tax-deductible to their donors, but in return the company has more flexibility about its operations, and more leeway to restrict access to non-members (in fact, it is expected to, as otherwise it is not a club).

Applications to register the word "Anthrocon" and the 'Anthrocon paw' as US trademarks were filed on 18 September and 12 November 2006, respectively. According to these filings, the word "Anthrocon" was first used on 1 February 1997, while the paw logo was used from 30 June 1998.

Talyn (also known as Talyn Harper when his full name is used, or Talon Garinger on Furcadia) is a grey wolf/husky hybrid living in Norfolk, Virginia, USA.

Talyn has been fandom-aware since 1997, but was not physically active in local group or convention activities until 2004.
Talyn is also a moderator of 757-Furries, a fur group local to the Hampton Roads, Virginia, area. His primary duty is to oversee the other moderators, stepping in when one is unavailable or requires additional input on any given situation, or when press exposure occurs with local media.
Information deletion
Why was the following line rolled back? "Uncle Kage also has been confirmed to own a character named [information deleted]." --Verix 09:56, 17 Aug 2005 (UTC)

:Because it is a rumor. Check the history of the edits. If it has been confirmed the real, quote a credible soure. --Wesha.

::Or better yey, don't! ;-) I have reasonable cause to believe that the individuals behind each name do not want them to be associated with one another. Whether or not it is true that they are one and the same, if the player wants the character to be separate, we should respect that unless there is an overriding need for them to be associated (see Sibe for an example of that). I do not know of such a need in this case.

::WikiFur is already being indexed by search engines, and it is important that we consider the potential effects of that on people's ability to remain anonymous. We don't want to hurt people. --GreenReaper 13:32, 17 Aug 2005 (UTC)

:::'Once you've opened can of worms, the only way to contain them again is to use a larger can'. If you can egoogle (ego + google) enough already, why worry about yet another article? I always said it's quite stupid to attempt to seal a crack in a dam with your thumb. --Wesha.

::::Ahh, but a thumb is all I have. I can but try. :-) Besides, this place gets a lot more traffic than places you mention, and not only by those specifically searching for information. --GreenReaper 08:21, 21 Aug 2005 (UTC)

The way I see it, Kage is so open about this connection that it's going to be added to his page every few changes. You might want to lock it to prevent this being a long term change/revert cycle. --71.36.244.185

:I don't personally know how open he is about any connection that there might be between the characters concerned. However, if it is not his wish that this connection be advertised online (and given the evidence I'll assume that until told otherwise by him), then I will endeavour to ensure that that happens. If that means reverting it every so often and leaving an explanation on the user's page, so be it. I would rather leave the page open for other useful edits that might be added than stop any edits being made by non-admins. Moreover, protecting a page just makes people wonder why it's protected, which defeats the whole point. :-)

:I'd note that anyone who does add it would be going against the wishes specified as a comment in the wiki text itself. --GreenReaper 08:14, 21 Aug 2005 (UTC)
A Jack cameo?
Very recently an arc in the comic strip Jack was put up which featured a cockroach in a labcoat (or what looked like one) delivering a small speech at a wedding, even having a drink of wine from a martini glass and being called Kage by name by the groom and the bride. I am not sure however, if this would be placed in this article or in the Jack comic article.

The arc in question which features what might be a cameo starts on this strip and so far goes up to this one. It adds a little humor as Giza thought it was an unusually accurate portrayal and especially since Kage couldn't remember what he said in the speech after he finished saying it, probably because he might have been drunk. --Markus 14:42, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

:I think it would be most appropriate in Jack, perhaps along with a list of the other cameos present in the comic, but I could see it being mentioned in passing here as well (it's probably not the only comic for which this has happened). Considering the comic's theme, I'm amazed he managed to go five pages without dying in some horrible manner. ;-p --GreenReaper 16:14, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
:It already does. My personal opinion is much the same as it was five years ago: if they are not widely linked online, they should probably remain that way unless there is a clear reason to link them.
:This page is about the macro wolf character. For the video game character, see Rouge.

Rogue is a giant wolfmorph (or megawolf) character created in the 90's. His main occupation is eating people, after smashing their domiciles. Acted as a completely separate and individual character from Kage, he is also, as a character, a writer - or rather, he dictates, and other people write.

In his past, Rogue was mainly used as a character on FurryMUCK.

Fursona and Fursuit
Rogue stands around 90 feet (27.43 m) tall and has bright yellow eyes. His fur colors move in a pattern of gray with white tips along the top and back of his head and along the entire backside of his body. His chest fur is white, while shades of orangish-brown are sandwiched along the sides of his body and face between the two other colors. Separate from this pattern, his paws are completely white up to the elbow mark.

A fursuit was made with the same coloring style and is shown in photography on his Fur Affinity page, along with being worn at various conventions.

Other Sites
Rogue is surprisingly web-savvy, having kept a home page for many years - it passed 100,000 hits in January 2001, 200,000 in August 2002, and 500,000 on 6 April 2005. Since December 2004 he also has a LiveJournal. His Homepage has not been updated since the 12th of January, 2008.

Trivia
He has made consistent claims to have coined the actual term "Macrophilia", of which Rogue's website and character are examples.
Dr. Samuel Conway, also known as Kagemushi Goro or Uncle Kage (IPA: [kɑ ˈgɛ]) is Chairman of Anthrocon, and regularly attends many other furry conventions. He has been a guest of honor at numerous conventions, both in and out of the furry world, including Albany Anthrocon, Feral! 2001, ConClave, Duckon, Eurofurence 8 (2002), and I-CON. He holds a doctorate in chemistry from Dartmouth College, and is a professional scientific researcher.

The many faces of Uncle Kage
Furry fan
Uncle Kage's name is actually an abbreviation of Kagemushi Goro, or the Samurai Cockroach, his selected fursona (kage mushi is Japanese for shadow bug; this is in turn a pun on the Japanese term kagemusha). Kage has also claimed that his cockroach fursona is also part wolf. In 2001, Uncle Kage went incognito to Mephit Furmeet 5 as "The Unknown Furry", wearing a cheaply-designed fursuit, including a mask made from a paper bag.

Kage was introduced to furry fandom by Jim Groat at Noreascon in 1989. He became a regular of FurryMUCK in 1991 and still spends time there in the evenings.

Chairman
Uncle Kage has been the chairman of Anthrocon since 1999, after his invitation as a guest of honor in 1998. Under his leadership, Anthrocon was incorporated and moved from Albany to Philadelphia, where the convention tripled its attendance in a period of 7 years.
Kage remains the public liaison for Anthrocon, handling such things as public relations, hotel contracts, finances and even damage control, as well as many numerous other activities before, during and after the convention.

As the chairman of Anthrocon, Uncle Kage has a distinct hatred of Target since they purchased and closed the Adam's Mark Hotel in Philadelphia in late 2004, forcing Anthrocon's move to Pittsburgh in 2006 and making him find a backup hotel for 2005. This hatred was demonstrated at Megaplex 5 when, visiting 2, The Ranting Gryphon, in the Dealer's Den, he received a package of sandwich crackers; upon hearing they were Target brand, he pulverized the crackers within with repeated karate chops in an uncharacteristic show of rage.
Storyteller
Uncle Kage is well known for his storytelling, always told with a glass of wine in hand, often based on everyday experiences - Uncle Kage's Story Hour is a popular addition to the schedule whenever he is present at an event. The Story Hour often involves a few humorous anecdotes from his own personal experiences. His stage name was the result of his first storytelling experience at ConFurence in 1994, and is a derivative of his fandom name Kagemushi Goro.

He is regularly invited to tell his stories as a guest of honor at other conventions, both within and without the furry fandom, including I-CON, Eurofurence, ConClave, and Camp Feral!. ===Auctioneer===
Uncle Kage also manages to make charity auctions fun, to the detriment of the wallets of many con-goers. Sometimes co-auctioneering with 2, the Ranting Gryphon, Uncle Kage is very rarely seen auctioneering without his trademark glass of wine, although he has been known to exchange it for water (or Japanese sake) on occasion. He also is known to express displeasure at people who bid in multiples less than five.
One of his most famous auctions was the sale of the "last brick" from the recently demolished Adam's Mark Hotel in 2006.

He has also published several short stories under his proper name of Dr. Samuel Conway. Most of these were in titles printed by Sofawolf Press, although his best-known work Tweaked in the Head can be found in the anthology Flights of Fantasy, edited by Mercedes Lackey (Daw Books, 1999).
