However, the word can apply to any non-human thing, including animals, plants, and inanimate objects.
Fairly recently, the furry fandom has co-opted the word for their own use. In the fandom it is used solely for one thing: bipedal animals. Such upright-walking furries are usually called anthro or morphic for short, and art featuring furry characters is sometimes called anthro art. This is somewhat ironic, as anthro is actually short for anthropo, a prefix that literally means "having the face of a man."

A morphic (or morph the Greek word for form, shape) is a furry character that has the body of a half-human, half-animal. Thus it is a character that is anthropomorphic, or human in likeness.

This is in contrast to those that are human only in mind (nonmorphic) and have the body of a real animal. Within the furry community, being morphic usually also implies human sentience, but technically speaking this need not be the case.

Varying Degrees of Morphism
Visually, there are several trends that are often used in the furry version of anthropomorphism, and a morph can range anywhere on the scale between human and animal.

Some furries are mostly animals, running on four legs, but can stand on two legs if they want to. They may understand human speech, but can be unable to speak themselves other than in their 'normal' animal way of hisses/barks/roars/whatever. This group would include all the Hollywood-style werewolves.

The most common furry characters on MUCKs and in furry art are the ones that are about half-half. They generally have the anatomy of a human being, but with paws, animal heads with muzzles, tails and fur. Most every one of these animal features can be varied towards either end of the scale.
As such, some within this group have digitigrade or unguligrade legs native to their species, and some have plantigrade legs the same as humans.
Some have paws with claws, others have fur-covered human hands with fingernails or claws.
Some have human-type hair that can be a different color than their fur, some only have the natural headfur of their animal counterparts.
Even genitals can be entirely human, nearly human or a humanly-proportioned version of the original animal form.

The differences manifest in behavior as well, the vast majority of furries live in a human-like civilization with a human-like culture. Some furries wear clothes and others do not. Some do body- and fur-modifications, such as dyeing the fur or attaching rings and bands to their tails in addition to the common human modifications such as piercings.

At the other end of the scale, the most humanoid ones are commonly found in anime rather than furry culture, or at a point where the two blend together. These furries are almost completely human with real human skin and hair, but they possess animal ears, tails, hands, or feet in any combination.
It started in 1991 with the hugely successful RPG Vampire: The Masquerade. The World of Darkness (WoD) term was born and later other aspects of this world were tagged on:
Each one of these were re-published in a Dark Ages edition that took place in the 13th century. Werewolf alone was also published in a Wild West edition.

Each new year had a theme and the books published in that year were focused on the theme. This brought about new expansion-systems with Hunters, Demons and Angels. Vampire and Werewolf were rewritten with an Eastern theme in the Year of the Lotus cycle and concerned the Asian variety of these creatures.

Unfortunately since all these systems were not planned from the beginning, a lot of discrepancies and often blatant contradictions arose between the five major game systems. Every new edition of every rulebook contained erratas and massive rule-changes to try and streamline the Storyteller System better. In the end it was left up to each individual Storyteller (the WoD RPG-term for Game-Master/Dungeon-Master) to interpret the rules and try to combine the systems. With each step towards a common ground for the systems, the rules, terms, and templates underwent dramatic changes, but at the end of the third edition of the system, everything was still not in place.

The systems were discontinued in late 2003 with an announcement of the Time of Judgement. Each system had Sourcebooks released with ideas, stories and other goodies that would enable players to roleplay the end of the world, a theme that had been hinted at since the very first edition of Vampire: The Masquerade with 'Gehenna'. Each subsequent edition of the rulebooks also made changes in the World of Darkness, pushing the general timeline further towards the end of the world.

In August 2004 White Wolf resumed publishing with a brand new World of Darkness system. The old concept/theme of gothic-punk was abandoned and a new WoD system was created with the theme of Dark Mystery. Instead of five different rulebooks with 40% of the same information in them as was done previously, a central World of Darkness corebook was created and each 'aspect' of the supernatural now has its own supplemental rulebook.
<b>Hengeyokai: Shapeshifters of the East</b> (ISBN 1-56504-338-3) is a World of Darkness roleplaying supplement. It was published as part of White Wolf's Year Of The Lotus cycle, where asian-themed variations were created based on the 'western' settings of the original World of Darkness. As the eastern parallel to Werewolf, Hengeyokai details the Beast Courts of the East. The Courts gather together many different types of shapeshifters in service the the Emerald Mother, their name for the Earth.

Chief among them are the Kitsune fox shapeshifters. Half of the Hengeyokai book is devoted to detailing Kitsune culture and powers. The other main shapeshifters in the Beast Courts are the Khan (were-tigers), Nezumi (were-rats), Hakken (a tribe of werewolf, originally of the White Fangs, Stargazers and Shadowlords tribes, but shown as one collective here), Nagah (were-serpents), Same-Bito (were-sharks), Tengu (were-ravens), Zhung Long (were-dragons), and Kumo (were-spiders).

Hengeyokai allows players to put the various shapeshifters into multi-racial packs called sentai that operate within the east, battling creatures that seek to harm the emerald Mother. In an extreme deviation from its western counterpart, the Hengeyokai are not always set against vampires; indeed, there are cases in which vampires have joined Sentai, their goals joined with the Hengeyokai.

Some of these creatures are also to be found in the Vampire: Bloodlines computer game based on White Wolf's World of Darkness roleplaying game.
Sabrina Online is a comic created by Eric W. Schwartz and follows the life of a skunkette named Sabrina.

* Ran from/to: September 1996 - current

Sabrina is a computer geek who works at the Double Z pornography studio as the graphics designer for the VHS and DVD covers for their movies. Although she works inside a pornography studio, she is shy and does not get involved in the videos outside of making the covers for the movie cases no matter how much her employer (Zig Zag) may secretly wish otherwise. She's 22 years old, has a boyfriend, and has conservative parents as well as a considerably younger sister named Tabitha who appears occasionally.

At home, Sabrina is apartment roommates with Amy. But it has much evolved to a family-friend relationship, as Amy married Thomas, but rather not before giving birth to little Timmy.

This is one of the best known furry comics. Updates are within a few days of the beginning of each month, usually comprising four strips.

spoiler

The plot follows Sabrina through her life in general, and her trials, most of which are social in nature. Her relations with the other cast members can at times turn humorous, such as when her employer drops in to cause her own unique brand of trouble which usually involves some flirtatious efforts to get Sabrina into a more "active" lifestyle - by Zig Zag's way of thinking, anyway. Eventually, Sabrina finds a boyfriend, and one thing leads another, which leads to the bed, in an awkward yet humorous set of strips. Zig Zag finds out through observing Sabrina's behavior the next day and adds even more comical material when she practically makes a scene of her "women's intuition", much to Sabrina's embarrasment.

Situations in the comic do not involve on-camera violence or sex scenes, only light swearing. It does contain "tasteful" nudity (no showing genitals or nipples, they are hidden by fur) and some comical mischief. This is never more accurately depicted than in the fact that Sabrina is never seen wearing normal pants, although she does seem to wear what looks like multiple sets of "pants" that look like her naked lower half (depicted in the strips published in September of 1998). This appears to be accepted without comment by all, including Sabrina's younger sister - assumably others do the same.

Two Lumps is the online comic strip of Ebeneezer and Snooch, two cat brothers who live under the same roof.

Ebeneezer (or Eben) is the calm, rational, cynical and extremely intelligent of the two, while Snooch is more of a fat, constantly bungling feline that eats unedible things and always gets in trouble with Mom, the female owner of the cats and the co-creator of the comic. Consequently Snooch is a lot happier and blissful than Ebeneezer.

Snooch has a tendency in the text-bubbles of the comic to "spell" things as they are pronounced, emphasizing that he rarely has any idea what he is talking about.

The comic is concerned very much with concepts unique to domestic cats, presented with a refreshing floor-height perspective of observational comedy. Such as providing a mathematical measurement for the sulkiness of a cat based on its height relative to its width, how cats communicate with their tailtip-twitching, and other feline strangeness that any cat-owner will recognize.
Created in 2003 by Scott Ramsoomair, VGCats is not a furry comic. However, some may be attracted to it for the primary recurring characters: a pink-furred female cat and a grey and white male cat. Ramsoomair (like Mac Hall's Ian McConville) has been introduced to the furry fandom through erotic drawings of his characters (fairly common fodder on fchan); this has not endared him to the fandom, and he takes occasional jabs at it. These two characters are the reason the comic is called VGCats and it should be noted that the comic itself is humorous parody of video games in general, although it can feature non-game subjects as well from time to time. The manner in which such humor is generated is similar to that of "Penny Arcade", which also pokes fun at video games.

For example, the comic may feature a strip that parodies Metal Gear Solid, or The Legend of Zelda. At other times, it may feature a comic about anime, such as the infamous strip called "Lost In Translation" in which the arist depicts in his own way the process 4-Kids Entertainment takes an original Japanese anime and makes it "Kid Friendly". In this case, the strip used the anime "One Piece" as an example, and the strip itself graphically depics a robot mutilating the main character and dressing him in a pink dress. This mutilation included blood and gore, but not directly as the robot stood in front of the character it was mutilating. This completely obscured all but one of the victim's arms from view, but it did not obscure the depiction of what may have been the character's organs flying through the air.

Due to the cartoonish but sporadically mature nature of the comic, the rating is PG14. The comic does contain swearing and depicts blood on occasion. It also makes what could be considered sexual references and innuendo. The swearing, however, is often limited and most often is tamed (GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY!), but the reader should be advised that there are strips that may potentially offend.

The video game comic was recently e-lawyered by one Jack Thompson. Many lulz ensued.
Faux Pas (pronounced "fox paws") is a comic strip created by Robert and Margaret Carspecken of R&M Creative Endeavors. The name is a play on the phrase "faux pas," a social blunder, reflecting the demeanour of the strip's characters. The central characters are the foxes Randy and Cindy.

Faux Pas originally appeared in a different form in newspaper spot illustrations and one-panel gags in Boulder, Colorado in the late 1970's. The strips and various incarnations of the characters have appeared in newspapers, newsletters, fanzines, comic books, APAs, and art shows since then, but it wasn't until 2001 that they were organized into a coherent series, redrawn by the artists, although utilizing scripts that had been written in the 1980's. A book based on the comic was published in October 2003 by Plan Nine Publishing, and while it sold well while it was in print, the book's run was plagued by printing and production problems and was frequently out of stock. The Carspeckens' contract with Plan Nine ended in September 2005, and the book is now out of print.

The strip won the 2005 Ursa Major Award for "Best Anthropomorphic Comic Strip."

Plot summary
The comic takes place at the mythical Green Mountain Studio Animals, a run-down farm in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Randy and the majority of his friends there are semi-retired animal actors. Although the humans in the series are rarely seen, the animals know that it is to their owners that they owe their existence. The animal characters are anthropomorphic in the sense of having human language and intelligence, but are non-bipedal, effectively similar in anatomy to "normal" animals.

Randy started his life in a pet shop, mistaken for a dog with an odd odor. He soon ended up living at (GMSA) alongside the other animals who were regularly auditioned for a variety of public appearances, such as photos, movies, and television. In spite of being raised in captivity, he found himself in a series of odd predicaments arising from the confusion over his species. He learned to rely on the friendship of some of other animals, including Myrtle DeHen, the ditzy secretary hen. But when GMSA was sold to new owners, Randy found himself sharing the place with dozens of cats, led by Kira Cat, who took him for a big-time cat-toy, even though he was sometimes helped out by the other animal residents.

Then Cindy entered the picture. As a wild-born vixen, she met Randy (while he was on a walk one day with Myrtle in tow), and was soon taken for the tamest ride of her life, finding how Randy lives being raised by humans. Cindy was attracted to Randy, but it turned be a rather odd, funny relationship. Having grown up in the wild where she learned to rely on her natural instincts, Cindy would find it a crazy challenge to get acquainted and develop friendships with the fellow animal residents at GMSA (who until then she would have regarded as meals), all to please Randy. For his part, Randy makes a deal with the cats, led by Kira, to leave Cindy alone, unaware that Cindy is quite capable of dealing with them on her own.

Cindy finds the relationship quite rewarding as opportunities arise from time to time for Randy to share with her some of the things that happen at GMSA. In return, Cindy teaches Randy and some of the others how to use their instincts to help them survive in the wilderness. As confusing as it may be living wild and domesticated, there's never a dull moment with either of these foxes. One question that remains unanswered is whether they'll ever mate and have fox-kits. However, that matter may be brought to the forefront by the appearance of Cindy's sneaky and seductive cousin Dusk, who proves to be a villain of sorts!

Other characters are Stu and Eddie Rabbit, Brisbane Wallaroo, Arthur Horse, and numerous others.

Freefall is a popular webcomic written and drawn by Mark Stanley and hosted at Purrsia. It is a humorous science fiction story detailing the misadventures of the starship Savage Chicken and its crew: Sam Starfall, a lovable alien con artist; Helix, a childlike robot; and Florence Ambrose, a genetically engineered "Bowman's Wolf" (i. e. an anthropomorphic canine).

Stanley began writing and drawing the strip on March 30, 1998 as a feature for the occasional furry zine, Yarf!, with the intent of telling the actual story behind the characters. The comic is updated three times a week, and it celebrated its thousandth strip in August 2004. It is in black and white, but the first 388 strips are also available in fan-colored versions. Some characters from Freefall also appear at the Cross Time Cafe.

Plot outline
The plotline focuses on the life of Florence, a hard-working and honest technical engineer, after she is hired to work for the shady, less-than-ethical Sam. Since the beginnings of the strip, Florence has worked to repair Sam's spaceship and actually get it flying again -- while at the same time trying to keep her sanity in the wake of Sam and Helix's trouble-making.

Sam's reputation as a no-good low-life is known far and wide across the curiously named colony planet "Jean", where the story takes place, even to the point where the local authorities know that if anything bad goes wrong in their society, Sam probably had a hand in it. Sam wears a humanoid environment suit with a goofy face, but he has hinted that his true appearance is squid-like.

Freefall's plot has been criticised by some as slow-moving. The comic's seven years (in 2005) of thrice-weekly strips has so far covered only a few days' activity in the story.

Trivia
Robots in the Freefall universe are sometimes programmed with the same Three Laws of Robotics that Isaac Asimov made famous in his stories, but their artificial intelligence is well developed, and they have a lot of autonomy, which helps them cope with a universe that has other intelligent species besides the humans and robots from Asimov's stories. It is implied that "Three Law Robots" are not created anymore, and modern AI's have more sophisticated safeguards.

A running gag throughout the comic is the reaction of the robots when they first meet Florence. Since the Bowman's Wolf is a brand new species, the Freefall robots do not recognise her, and their first reaction is invariably to throw their arms out wide and shout "doggy!". The effect can be "kinda freaky" when a lot of them do it at once. But despite this childlike behaviour, the Freefall robots have developed a great respect for Florence, especially after she risked her life to rescue two robots from destruction during a hurricane. Because the memories of most of the robots on "Jean" are networked together, all the robots on the planet are now aware of Florence's deeds and are desperate to help her in any way they can.

Freefall is noted as being one of the more scientifically accurate science fiction web comics available today. Author Stanley has stated he intends to keep the science in the comic as realistic as possible without relying on deus ex machina (or "magic") devices such as "warp drive," "artificial gravity," or "transporter beams."

An in-joke for Star Trek fans is that the Savage Chicken's registry number is 1071-CCN - the reverse of the Starship Enterprise's NCC-1701.
<b>Wolf</b> was a video game produced in 1994 by Sanctuary Woods. In this 'edutainment' game, the player took on the role of a wolf, trying to live a successful lupine life. Even such features such as barking, howling, and scenting were included.

The game could be customized: everything from the pack to the world playing in to the species could be changed, for people who wanted to just 'play around' as a wolf in certain situations. In addition, there was mission play, in which the player was challenged to perform certain tasks in about 40 different scenarios -- escape a group of human hunters on helicopter, for example, or successfully raise a litter of pups before the winter came.

The game came in two versions: Floppy and CD-ROM. The CD-ROM version included video and enhanced sound, but was otherwise the same game.

Wolf was so successful that it spawned a sequel, Lion. However, despite the same level of effort being put into the sequel when it came to fact-checking, the sequel was seen as a cheap port of the original, and did not have the same success as Wolf.
Most Danish furries seem to have friendly relations with the closest community to them, the UK furs. They hang out in their chatrooms and visit them in real-life for furmeets. English is also spoken most often in the Danish IRC channel.
Most real-life interaction between Danish furries are in the form of Mini-meets, no conventions exist in the country.
