'''Dean Dodrill''' (also known as '''Noogy''') is a professional animation [[artist]]. He lives in [[wikipedia:Colorado|Colorado]], and is married to [[Elizabeth Dodrill|Elizabeth]], since early-September 2000.

Dean's dream of becoming an animator all started back during his time of junior-high/high school, when he was much inspired by the [[Foxglove]] [[bat]]-[[character]], from one episode of [[wikipedia:Walt_Disney_Television_Animation|Disney's]] ''[[Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers]]'' TV animation series.

He not only began drawing up fan art of Foxglove, but then he slowly began to create his own characters, such as [[Leddinger]], a [[flying squirrel]] dude, and his much beloved pride-and-joy [[Bonnie]], an attractive [[mouse]]-girl, who's created after his own blood-heritage as half-[[wikipedia:Korea|Korean]].

Together, these characters were developed in various film-shorts, such as ''[[Living On A Prayer]]''. The characters were initially created as short-bodied [[rodent]]s. Since then, Dean has very much evolved his characters to have larger, more [[human]]-like [[anatomy]].

==The Jazz Jackrabbit games==

During this time he landed a short-lived job at [[Jagged Edge Studios]](Actually he and his brother created/owned the company Jagged Edge Studios) in conjunction with [[Wikipedia:EpicMegaGames|EpicMegaGames]], where he did animation for the [[Jazz Jackrabbit]] video games. Then when it came to doing ''[[Jazz Jackrabbit 2: The Secret Files]]'', he created [[Lori Jackrabbit]], a yellow athletic femme-[[rabbit|jackrabbit]], being Jazz and [[Spaz Jackrabbit|Spaz]]'s sister. Though those characters live on through fans, Epic ended up failing to balance their books and were forced to lay off Dean.

A third installment of the game, [[Jazz Jackrabbit 3]] (also known as '''Jazz Jackrabbit 3D''' and '''Jazz3D''',) in which Dean worked on the game's artwork and level design, never came to be due to Epic's failure to funding for the project. It would have been developed using the [[wikipedia:Unreal_Engine|Unreal engine]] technology.

Many of their fans/friends are impressed by the entire concept of animating this film, not to mention how heroic the characters ought to be.

As Dean continues to tackle ''Elysian Tail'', he has withdrawn from online activities. He plans an online comeback once his current projects are completed.

Its older strips, which went by the name ''Skippy and Liska'', were also mirrored on [[Yerf]]. The strip's fictitious location, from which the title is taken, is supposedly located in central Alberta, Canada and named after the Canadian World War II fighter pilot Andrew Charles Mynarski.

The strip centers around ''Skippy'', a twitchy but good-natured cottontail rabbit, and his sociopathic red vixen denmate ''Liska''. Liska's character was originally inspired by the character Liska Bystrouska (Czech for "Vixen Sharp-ears") from Rudolph Tesnohlidek's novel ''[[The Cunning Little Vixen]]''<ref>[http://mynarskiforest.purrsia.com/origin.htm Origins of Species] Retrieved December 2, 2008</ref>. He is, nonetheless, very intelligent, and helps to inform the Pevensie children about the prophecy, about the White Witch, and the news that "Aslan is on the move". He likes to poke fun at his wife at every opportunity but there is no real ill-will between them.

'''Mrs. Beaver''' is a stereotype of a working-class housewife. She is anything but lazy, but she seems to have little sense in her head about practical things such as what needs to be packed when one must leave the house in a hurry. The '''Freezing Furs''' were a (now defunct) group that was founded by [[Jurann Foxtail]] in response to the [[Burned Furs]].

Their self-stated purposes were:

*To put a stop to the Burned Fur line of thinking by starting a large support group
*To open a "real avenue of healing and image improvement" for the furry fandom

They believed that the Burned Furs were a hate group who were seeking to rally support for a cleansing of the [[furry fandom]] by discounting and removing elements which the Freezing Furs believed had been part of it since the beginning.

They used very forceful language, for example claiming that Burned Furs wished to "put a bullet in the head of every [[zoophile]], [[plushophile]], [[lifestyler]], anyone who is openly of an alternate sexuality, or anyone who doesn't think their views are the wholesome truth."

This led to many disputes and arguments between supporters of the Burned Furs, Freezing Furs and people who were non-aligned or whom had no interest in the factional infighting.

Many of these disputes occurred on Usenet in the [[:Category:Newsgroups|newsgroups]] [[alt.fan.furry]] and [[alt.lifestyle.furry]].

The group was launched in Spring 1999, and became inactive by the end of the year.

In 1993, Nintendo's feature system, the [[wikipedia:Super Nintendo Entertainment System|Super Nintendo Entertainment System]] (or SNES for short) was blessed with the gift of the [[wikipedia:Super FX|Super FX]] graphics chip. This chip, when installed on certain game cartridges, would enable the system to generate and display polygonal 3D sprites and backgrounds which would be a graphical leap potentially larger than that of ''[[Final Fantasy VI]]'' or ''Super Mario World''. The first game to feature this chip was the premier release of ''Star Fox'', a video game classified as a shooter. It was licensed entirely by Nintendo with the help of Argonaut Software in a contract for three Super FX chip games.

''Star Fox'' was hailed as a marvel of graphics technology at the time, and it took a while for the game to really take off as people dived into its unique world. Nintendo later released a second version of the home game and a limited number of cartridges which were used in the "Weekend Competition". This more competitive version kept track of your score and gave you a limited amount of time in which to play. It also sparked the creation of a wristwatch version of the game which was a promotional item people could get from collecting cereal box tops. [[Comic]]s and [[plushies]] followed and were considered the most important aspect to the game’s universe.

In 1995, demand started rising for another game in the series. Nintendo again started work to create a game superior in quality as much as possible. Their efforts included the introduction of all-range stages for the majority of the game, two additional characters named Miyu (replacing the Andross look alike "Saru" from the alpha) and Fay (replacing a Fara look a like named Lady from another alpha version), new ships and ship transformations, a map in which players could literally fly everywhere, new enemies, and the introduction of Star Wolf. This title was tentatively called ''[[wikipedia:Star Fox 2|Star Fox 2]]'' and held promise as a title that would use the improved [[wikipedia:Super FX|Super FX 2]] chip to control the graphics. This game also included more - and higher quality - synthetic voice clips than its predecessor. However, the release of the [[wikipedia:Nintendo 64|Nintendo 64]] system promised more capability than the SNES and the ''Star Fox 2'' project was scrapped in its final bug-testing stages and thus was never released outside the beta cartridges that were in the company and the demos that were seen at E3.

These few cartridges were eventually turned into ROMS and distributed across the Internet in its original Japanese form. Patches were eventually made and a more or less final version of this beta game was released on the internet. This release had some rumors attached to it. At one time at the E3 expo that it was a feature in, one avid fan tried to steal the cartridge. He never left the booth with it as he was arrested, but Nintendo dropped charges soon thereafter.

Further, Nintendo had sent out eight copies of the full game to major magazines so they could make a review by release day. When the game was canceled, Nintendo asked for the cartridges to be returned. A few magazine companies complied, and a few did not. One of these cartridges showed up at an auction once and sold for over ten thousand dollars due to the rarity of a complete cartridge. It is from one of these cartridges that the ROM circulating the internet was copied from.

Due to the technical completion of ''Star Fox 2'', the third and final game in the contract, Argonaut Software parted ways with Nintendo and returned to its former productions.

===Star Fox 64===

Two years later in 1997, after many discussions from Nintendo and sneak previews, ''Star Fox 64'' was released. This was the first game in the series to use voice actors for real-time dialog, the first ever addition of the Rumble Pack to let players "feel" the game (such as when they got hit by enemy fire), and greater levels of detail along with a rework of the sprites and new vehicles.

The system map split the game into three routes similar to the original game, and unlike the original, it allowed players to change routes depending on their performance in the last mission. This made the game more diverse and expansive than before, since the player could pick a path through the enemy lines to get to the final level which in itself had two possible layouts depending on the attack approach the player took.

Unknown to many players however, were the elements of the game which were carried over from ''Star Fox 2''. Star Wolf, the All Range Mode, and the Wolfen were reused from ''Star Fox 2'' and played a pivotal role in the game, as you could not go through the game without having to go through these things at least once. Each mission also carried a score cap which the player had to meet or exceed to get a medal for that stage, with a requirement that the entire team survive. Collecting all the medals for every stage on the map would unlock an expert mode with more enemies, a smarter AI, and the fragility of the Arwing increased. It also had extras for multiplayer mode which could be unlocked for performing certain tasks; all of this gave the game a decent replay value.

Many people use this game as the definition for what is canon in the Star Fox universe. Star Fox 64 was considered the "test dummy" of what the [[wikipedia:Nintendo 64|Nintendo 64]] could do and was, in simple terms, a remake of the original SNES game.

===Dinosaur Planet===

Started in late 1999, ''Dinosaur Planet'' was intended to be Rare's (a.k.a '''Rareware''') final project for Nintendo before moving on to the [[wikipedia:GameCube|GameCube]] which was called "Project Dolphin" at the time. This game was intended to push the limits of the N64's technology and Rare even had a back story for the game. In fact, they had kept it such a good secret that when they revealed it on the cover of the year 2000 E3 coverage issue of Nintendo Power, the game was closer to completion than many people thought despite the tidbits of information floating around. In fact, they planned to release it in the fourth quarter of 2000.

The game was a tremendous undertaking, having been put on full display at E3 2000 next to ''[[Conker's Bad Fur Day]]'', so people visiting the booth knew the game existed. It was slated to be the largest cartridge released for the N64 with a total size of 512Mb. Stores like Best Buy had already started taking pre-orders for the title.

As the game got closer to being released, people began to feel that something was wrong. There was no advertising for the game, no magazine articles, no previews, not a single thing. The game had more or less evaporated. And sure enough, much like ''Star Fox 2'', the game was at a stage of final bug testing when it was canceled. It seemed that the main character had a resemblance very close to Fox McCloud, a major primary character in the Star Fox series. Also, around that same time Nintendo was working on an adventure game that was to take place on an unspecified planet in the Lylat System. The title wasn't decided and the game wasn't even playable yet so a lot was still in the air. Nintendo wanted to get the game out before the GameCube was launched and unfortunately it appeared that it wasn't going to happen. In their attempts to get the game out, they began to look for complete or near-complete projects that they could convert into what they wanted. Since Rare was a second party, Nintendo had a considerable influence on them and convinced Rare to convert the game into what would later be called ''Star Fox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet''.

Unfortunately, the executives at Rare were torn on the decision. Half the company was for this conversion while half were against it. However, since Nintendo had pulled their title, they missed their launch window for that year and there was no feasible way to market their game in the next year because the GameCube was being released as the replacement for the Nintendo 64. ''Dinosaur Planet'' was thus officially canceled then, and the conversion process began.

Due to increasing stress between Nintendo and Rare at that point, Rare felt insulted that Nintendo hadn't put up any official advertisement effort into their last project: ''Conker's Bad Fur Day''. This was in part due to the fact that the game ran in total contrast to the image Nintendo wanted. Further, the game got little to no publicity because the game's main character was a protagonist who drank, cussed, and urinated in addition to making numerous sex jokes- what little publicity it ''did'' garner was negative. This had soured relations with Nintendo a bit and proved to be a bumpy ride for fans everywhere.

Nintendo wanted the now renamed ''Star Fox Adventures'' to be a [[wikipedia:GameCube|GameCube]] launch title, but it was already 2002 and the system had been out for at least six months. New games were getting hard to come by, just as with the Nintendo 64, and it was not a good image that was being projected.

There had been a few big guns prepared for the fall season which included ''Metroid Prime'' and ''The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker''. They chose to put ''Star Fox Adventures'' into this lineup, although there was a drawback to this kind of power play in that there was almost nothing of value that had been released so far that year except for ''Sonic Adventure 2: Battle''. With everything starting to hit at the same time, Nintendo was competing with itself and ''Wind Waker'' was delayed till 2003. The official reason given for the delay was "translation issues" although unofficially, people believed it was to avoid overshadowing the holiday season.

In the graphical position, ''Star Fox Adventures'' was a masterpiece. The Rare team managed to pull off "fur shading" which let characters have a colored wire frame fur that would react to the environment around them, such as sway in the wind and move their faces and [[tail]]s, something which Microsoft claimed that only Xbox could do and was eventually done on the Xbox in the remake of ''Bad Fur Day'', ''[[Conker: Live and Reloaded]]''. It added a tremendous degree of realism and naturalness to the game that no other game of the time could manage. The cinematic scenes allowed the story to be fleshed out and were choreographed with the animators and musicians to create a movie-like level of quality and depth.

Most of the music for ''Star Fox Adventures'' was ported from the N64 version of ''Dinosaur Planet'' and enhanced in places to allow for the GameCube's additional sound chip. The remaining music was newly composed to be streamed from the disc through live recordings during the cinematics. All of this was managed by David Wise of ''Donkey Kong Country'' fame. Gameplay was like a modified version of the N64 Zelda title ''Ocarina of Time''. Some people complained about that, but others enjoyed it. It was quite a departure from Rare's portfolio of games, which were mostly extensive yet well done item quests.

People wondered why Falco wasn't in the game until the very end of the story and some grew angry about it, demanding to know why he was missing in the first place. In the technical view, there wasn't enough time to work him into the main story, but from the creative standpoint a comic was released by Nintendo of Japan to cover Falco's lack of involvement and to bridge the gap between ''Star Fox 64'' and ''Star Fox Adventures'', which was meant to happen after the SF64 timeline. Unfortunately, it was released after the US version of ''Adventures'' had hit store shelves.

After the release of ''Star Fox Adventures'', Rare parted ways with Nintendo to work under Microsoft and have produced a number of games for both the Xbox and Xbox 360. They have also continued to make a number of smaller titles for the Gameboy Advance.

===Star Fox: Assault===

During a brief conflict with Rare over ''Star Fox Adventures'', Nintendo had been working on a new [[wikipedia:GameCube|GameCube]] title as a direct follow-up of the story from ''Star Fox 64''. They were not planning for the dispute with Rare to end with Nintendo winning the copyrights to Krystal, Tricky, and the other original cast for ''Star Fox Adventures'': this new game was going to be a single-player arcade version of ''Star Fox 64'', yet another remake. However, through luck and their legal department, this game project was scrapped and started over from the ground up. The result was that only one poster for the arcade game was released and only the multiplayer was available for review at E3 2003.

This time around, though, Nintendo contracted Namco to be the new home of Star Fox, and Namco started working on the newest chapter in Star Fox history. Since Nintendo had won the rights to the Star Fox Adventures characters, Namco was able to continue down the path that Rare had begun in Star Fox Adventures, including being able to use Krystal. This caused a setback in the development time and the game was pushed back by at least a year. The new game was to be a story-driven shooter that had ground-based missions thrown into the game's structure and design.

The game's single-player debut made its appearance during the E3 2004 Media Press Conference, and was fully playable on the show floor the very next day. It was proof that Namco could bring the Star Fox franchise together and fans could continue on what is considered one of the longest running and most celebrated space shooters in gaming history. At the time though, the game didn't have a name and it was being simply called ''Star Fox Triforce''. A year afterward, the name was changed to ''Star Fox Armada'' since the game's major focus had been shifted into the story, but it was again renamed simply to ''Star Fox 2'' which was the name of the unreleased SNES predecessor. When fans became confused, it was clarified that this game and the unreleased SNES game had nothing in common except for the name. At E3 2004, the name changed again, this time to ''Star Fox - Coming This Fall''. It was a humorous name, but it conveyed to the fans that Nintendo had no clue what they were really going to call the game.

After one last name change, Namco finally released ''Star Fox: Assault'' to store shelves in February of 2005. It was intended to be released Christmas of 2004, but they had a delay due to fan requests that the game have a LAN mode. This required a total overhaul of the multiplayer engine and thus the option never saw the light of day. Fans had been waiting long enough for the next flight adventure, and Namco was not willing to risk negative publicity and another E3 showoff since there were already two such showings under that game's belt; thus it hit the shelves without the LAN ability. However, some interesting notes about the game point out that the main enemy presence in the story resembles that of the [[MemoryAlpha:Borg|Borg]] from Star Trek. It was a humorous similarity in demeanor and goals.

===Star Fox: Command===
In August 2006, Nintendo released Star Fox: Command for the [[wikipedia:Nintendo DS|Nintendo DS]]. Command marks the first time the Star Fox series has ever been on a Nintendo handheld or had online multiplayer. Developed by Kyoto based developer Q-Games, Command is in many ways a revival of the cancelled Star Fox 2 (Q-Games was formed by many of the ex-Argonaut Software development teams that worked on Star Fox and Star Fox 2).

The story takes place some time after the events of Assault and the Star Fox team has split up, with Fox and ROB 64 being the only remnants of Star Fox left.
A new threat has invaded the Lylat System: the Anglar, a race of [[anthropomorphic]] [[fish]] aliens from the acidic seas of Venom who's intention is to rule the Lylat System by attacking all of the planets in it. When the Anglar attack Fox's homeworld of Corneria, he begins to attack the Anglar forces.

Throughout the game players meet up with both new characters (like Peppy's daughter Lucy Hare) and old ones. (Bill Grey and Katt Monroe make their first appearance since Star Fox 64) The game features various branching pathways which the player can choose at various points in the game. This also marks the first time that you can play as characters other than Fox in single player. The game contains over 30 missions and 9 different endings. Players can only go on one path at the beginning of the game but after getting the first ending the player will gain a "Key of Destiny" which can be used only once each new play-through to go on a different path.

The game is a revival of Star Fox 2 in terms of gameplay as the development team felt like going back to that game and updating many of the gameplay aspects for Command to better fit the Nintendo DS. All aircraft controls (with the exception of shooting lasers) take place on the touch screen while the action itself takes place on the upper screen in all-range mode styled fights.

On an interesting note, Star Fox: Command does contain references and cameos for the F-Zero series (a futuristic racing series also done by Nintendo), which has, in turn, made references to the Star Fox series by way of the character James McCloud, who looks stunningly like the character, though human.

He was presumed killed by Andross, and this death is what motivates Fox during portions of the game. In the SNES comics, James was reported as KIA during the creation of a black hole by the premature detonation of a bomb which Andross made, while in ''Star Fox 64'', James was betrayed by his teammate Pigma Dengar, resulting in his capture. He was then given to Andross who killed him. At the end of ''Star Fox 64'', James' phantom guides Fox out of Andross's exploding base, thus saving him from certain death. He makes an appearance in ''Star Fox: Assault'', with his voice being manipulated by the Aparoid Queen. He next appears as a playable character in "Star Fox Command" in the "Dash Makes A Choice" stage, which questions his actual "death."

* '''[[Fox McCloud]]:''' The main character in the series. Fox is the chief pilot of the mercenary group called Star Fox. He takes his father's death very personally and at times it drives him into irrational fits of rage. When he's not in such a fit, he is a highly skilled pilot and calls the shots for the team. He believes himself to be the best pilot in the system and often tries to one-up Fox, which sometimes backfires and lands him in trouble.

His piloting skills are lacking and he gets enemies on his tail quite often because of his ineptitude at dog fighting- he makes up for this with his technological aptitude, enemy shield analysis during combat, and steadfast courage even when obviously fearful. Most incarnations of him make him appear whiny and irritating, a subject for the fans' occasional comments that he be thrown out an airlock and forgotten. At one point his gender was questioned and a [[VG Cats]] comic was released to make light of it. In ''Star Fox Assault'' however, he takes on a more masculine voice and becomes less whiny, a respite that was welcomed- amusingly, he also tends to get his girl faster than Fox does.

* '''[[Peppy Hare]]:''' A middle-aged [[hare]] which serves as the team's eldest and wisest member. He represents the common sense of the Star Fox team and tempers their skill and eagerness into something useful. After the events of Star Fox 64, he retires from flying to be a mapmaker and consultant to the team, giving advice to Fox and acting as a father figure throughout the series, not just in terms of battle and warfare, but additional wisdom in terms of trust, friendship and (in reference to Fox and Krystal) the importance of love. After the events of Star Fox: Assault, General Pepper steps down from his position as General, and Peppy takes up the reins, generally cited as a determined, wise and beneficial military figure.

* '''[[Krystal]]:''' Originally the Damsel in Distress from ''Star Fox Adventures'', she joined the team after her rescue and became a pilot. Her telepathic abilities were used as a plot device in ''Star Fox Assault'' and it was hinted through the cutscenes of ''Star Fox Adventures'' and ''Star Fox Assault'' that she and Fox are attracted to each other in a romance, though it is only directly mentioned once in ''Assault'' in one cutscene where Tricky and Fox argue over it, much to Krystal's amusement. However, Katt Monroe and her team discovered this plan, and tried to stop him. She even managed to contact Falco for assistance. At this time, Star Fox was called by Shears about Katt and the others, misleading them by saying they were servants of Andross. His deception led to a dogfight between Fox and Falco, while Andross' revival was underway. After some explaining, Fox entered the base in a attempt to stop Shears; but it was too late. Andross had awoken, killed the captain, and attempted to kill Fox. Luckily, they managed to escape and destroy the base. After they left, Andrew Oikonny arrived to save his dying uncle, and instructed him to take him to Sauria.

== Biography ==

According to StraitFox, The inspirations for his character spawned from watching the Disney animated movie ''[[Robin Hood]]'' too much. Straitfox became a furry in 2000, but didn't know what furry was until 2004.

While on vacation in [[Wikipedia:Sweden|Sweden]], StraitFox was inspired with an idea for completing Straitfox: by giving him a [[Wikipedia:straitjacket|straitjacket]], referenced from many copyrighted characters such as [[Wikipedia:List of Who Framed Roger Rabbit characters|Psycho the Weasel]] from ''[[Who Framed Roger Rabbit|Who Framed Roger Rabbit]]'', [[Wikipedia:List of Crash Bandicoot characters|Ripper Roo]] from the [[Crash Bandicoot]] games, and [[Muzzle]] from ''[[Road Rovers]]''; and of course a fellow furry named [[Runtt]] gave him further inspiration from the [[red panda]] (aka '''firefox''').

Straitfox feels that the straitjacket look suits him, but "had mixed reviews from spammers and trolls thinking Stefan makes fun of insanity," saying "It is totally satire, it's not hurting anyone."

It has since become the dominant [[furry]] group in the region and has branched off into cyberspace to [[LiveJournal]] and [[MySpace]] communities, moderated by [[Artemis]] and [[User:AshMCairo|Ash M. Cairo]] respectively, to the [[Second Life]] group, founded by [[Sema JayHawk]] and helped moderated by [[Blazger]] and [[Steel the Warrior]]. Its main website was created in 1998 by [[Aureth]] on his [[Cornwuff Press]] site. Artemis took over as webmaster in 1999; he revamped and ran the site on [[Catbox|catbox.com]] until 2007 when, under the direction of Ash M. The mailing list is primarily used to organize social functions, including two monthly [[LAFF Bowling|bowling]] outings (organized by [[Timoran]], [[Rayven Wolffe]] and [[Blazger]]), which features karaoke and followed by multiple after-bowling parties, including [[SliderCon]] (organized by [[Blazger]]), as well as monthly [[laff:softball|softball]] games in the summer (organized by [[Stevie Maxwell]]), and the annual trip to [[Wikipedia:Noah's Ark Waterpark|Noah's Ark Waterpark]] in the [[Wikipedia:Wisconsin Dells|Wisconsin Dells]] (organized by [[Hakeber]]). The year culminates in a grand [[LAFF New Years Eve|New Year's Eve party]] in [[Wikipedia:Northern Illinois|northern Illinois]]. In past years, that's been organized by various furries, including [[Linnaeus]] and [[Riley West Wolf]], but in 2007, the party split up into various parties, including two main parties located in northern and western Chicagoland. WikiFur's stated mission is to "record information of use to the furry community", in an attempt to distribute it to others. This mission has been widely interpreted, and WikiFur contains articles on [[art]], [[literature]] and other forms of culture both created by and of interest to members of the [[furry fandom]], as well as the people and characters within it, their history and interests, the worlds they inhabit, and much more besides. It can also offer a good introduction to the fandom, although [[Wikipedia:Furry fandom|Wikipedia's article]] is considered by WikiFur's founder to remain the best single page on the topic.

Motives for contributors vary. There are those who simply enjoy collecting and organizing information on anthropomorphic topics. Many are fans of particular topics and wish to help write "the definitive article" on it. Some see WikiFur as a means of "getting the truth out" about contentious subjects like the [[Babyfur]] community, while others value it as a source of information which, while not completely without bias, is at least subject to an element of peer review and modification.

WikiFur did not spring up overnight, but it only took three weeks for it to be featured on [[Something Awful]]. Several people have proposed a '''legal''' right to privacy, but so far have failed to come up with any relevant laws when challenged to do so. The use of legal threats has not helped the case of those requesting a removal.

There is an ever-present danger of bias on WikiFur. The most notable bias is due to the fact that most editors (and all of the most dedicated members) are members of the furry fandom, and the majority are likely to have a positive opinion of it. This can lead to accusations that articles are biased towards the furry fandom's position - and sometimes these accusations are accurate.

There is also little to stop people adding overly-positive information about things they like, or overly-negative (sometimes even downright malicious) information about things they do not like. Such information may or may not be removed by others when it is added; either way, it can cause controversy. Arguments are typically solved by removal of unsourced information, the provision of references, or (in the case of opinion) specific attribution of statements. Sometimes it is suggested that the relative proportions of content that is present in an article may itself put the topic in a [[Wikipedia:False light|false light]] - the usual answer to this is to suggest that the person complaining about it fix it by adding other relevant information.

Some people believe WikiFur can never be a reliable source of information. ==Origin of FENEC and Califur==
FENEC ("Furries Enjoying the Natural Environments of California") was conceived by [[Alohawolf|Robert "Alohawolf" Johnson Jr.]], [[Dawn Britt]], and [[Dennis Carr]] with the initial idea of having a furry-themed campout. While riding home from the southern California [[FurBQ]], Dawn had commented to Dennis and his wife, Karmin, about the lack of other camping events such as [[Feral!]] in Southern California. Dennis pointed this out while chatting on the [[Furnet]] IRC Network, and Robert took charge from there.

As the campout was being planned, additional staffers including [[Glen Wooten]], [[Zee|Zsanene "Zee" Stevens]], [[Trapa|Tank "Trapa" Winters]], [[Drew kitty|"Drew kitty"]] along with ConFurence co-founders [[Mark Merlino]] and [[Rod O'Riley]] were brought on board. With the demise of ConFurence in 2003, Mark and Robert expressed a desire to see a regional convention maintained in Southern California. The decision was made in early autumn of 2003 to plan a traditional hotel-based convention to succeed [[ConFurence 2003]] with [[Califur 0]] the following year.

YS features an "opt-out" toggle to filter out keywords for things that a user may find repulsive has been added making things even easier to browse by simply removing from view anything that meets the "offensiveness" criteria set by the user.

A rating system allows users to vote on a scale between 1 and 5 as to the quality of a work. A separate comments system at the bottom of the work lets visitors leave their thoughts. If a user really likes a piece of work they can add it to their favorites list, or watch the creator to see their future work in a separate view.

In 2006, F.A.P switched to a software that provided a filtered, "image only" view of the Yiffstar Forums. Unlike other 2chan-based boards, F.A.P does not have a [[Do Not Post|DNP list]].

The term predates its use on the Internet, and is believed to have been coined in the late 1980's by those who felt an affinity or connection to the ''fae folk'' and/or ''[[Wikipedia:elf|elves]]'' of traditional mythological culture and folklore. First appearing in use on the Internet in the mid-1990s, the word was intended to imply some form of kinship with an 'other' element outside of a person's biological nature, physical mind and experiences, and [[human]] life.

==Otherkin beliefs==

Otherkin feel they have a sympathetic connection, affinity, or some other form of relation with another animal or being. Traditionally these have been mythological in nature, beginning with fairy and fey folk, elves, and a few other European mythological archetypes. Later, associations with other creatures became common, including [[unicorn]]s, [[gryphon]]s, [[dragon]]s, angelics, and [[demon]]s; as well as "non-living" types such as golems and other inorganics. In time, some people also began to describe concepts for beings which were derived from mythological archetypes, though having unique qualities; fully undefinable or one-of-a-kind kin types appeared as well.

With the unusual nature of the basic otherkin premises, there has been skepticism directed at it along with the proposal that many people adopt the otherkin identity to justify social difficulties - the outcast syndrome - or because they have a delusion and are in denial about their biological humanity. The idea that otherkin believe they are physically non-human in a spectacular way - such as actually being biological dragons - is seen as a pervasive misunderstanding by otherkin themselves, who point out the spiritual and psychological focus of the concept. Some community members believe this confusion arises from those unfamiliar with the concept or having only a sketchy or distorted awareness; comparing it to psychiatric cases such as [[lycanthropy]] and dissociative identity disorder, and concluding that in order for someone to state that they identify as an elf or gryphon, they must be experiencing a form of hallucination or delusion.

Contrary to [[stereotype]]s which have been perpetuated, most who identify as otherkin are fully aware of their biology and human existence. Many otherkin do have particular spiritual and metaphysical beliefs, and as part of those beliefs have discussed elements of a proposed spiritual reality which is not to be confused with the material world. Even if a given person believes, for instance, that on a spiritual plane they may have wings, it is uncommon that they are making a claim about such things that is scientific in nature, or that they exist in what most people might consider the real world.

Despite these points, some dislike the otherkin concept on the grounds that they feel it is abused by individuals who wish to present themselves as special and unique without merit, and that making unverifiable spiritual claims is one way to achieve this. Over time, otherkin has proven to be appealing to a number of people for this reason, and those within the community can be rigorous about screening out 'me too' and 'fluffbunny' adopters of the otherkin moniker. Some otherkin themselves do not consider the Internet Kin community to have much or any validity, saying that it is easy and tempting for a person to claim almost anything within the realm of online anonymity.

Within the loosely defined otherkin community, online or off, there is no consensus as to just what makes a person otherkin. A variety of phenomena have been observed and theorized about which many feel create some sort of affinity between a person and something else. In this light, some see otherkin as related to concepts such as [[Wikipedia:Totemism|Totemism]], which have appeared in human culture since ancient times. There has also been some debate over how potential factors such as [[Wikipedia:Clinical lycanthropy|clinical lycanthropy]] may account for a percentage of the experiences otherkin believe they have had. While many, and some conjecture most, otherkin follow a paradigm of spiritual reincarnation in some form to help explain their state of being, not all otherkin share this, and may view themselves in other spiritual, philosophical, or psychological frameworks. Even among those who believe in reincarnation, there are a wide variety of interpretations.

Another viewpoint is that the term otherkin largely denotes a social network and should not, or can not, be used as a description for individual spiritual beliefs or to describe an particular theory or explanation for phenomenon. Many people use the otherkin community to find discussion for a variety of subjects and to compare subjective experiences without considering themselves to be otherkin in a descriptive sense.

==History of the community==

Although there are spiritual parallels with shamanism and totemism, the modern otherkin subculture appears to trace its roots back to the counterculture of the 1960s. The Silver Elves are one of the more prominent groups in the modern subculture, mainly because of the Magical Elven Love Letters which they have regularly published for over twenty years. In their published compilation of these letters, they write that at the time they began to write them in 1979, ''"it had been nearly two years since the Elf Queen's Daughters had forsaken the dharma of the magic letters"''. This would indicate that the letters of the Silver Elves are a direct descendant of the newsletters released by the Elf Queen's Daughters; furthermore, the Silver Elves themselves profess to have been awakened as elves by that group.

Until the Internet became accessible, the letters were sent out by post and further distributed by their recipients, as well as being printed in various newsletters and magazines. Secondly, several of the common themes in the modern otherkin movement are visible in it, such as the concept that elves have something significant to contribute to the world, and mention of the "Veil to the Otherworld", or the invisible boundary between the real world and the magical world of faerie.

Since it was posted to eleven newsgroups, it also violated Usenet's crossposting etiquette, which was far more strictly observed at the time than it is today. On Usenet itself, the document was universally panned and considered to be either a troll or an attempt to frame an innocent party. ==Otherkin in the media==

The otherkin phenomenon has experienced less exposure in general media than subculture venues such as furry fandom, although it has been noted with increasing frequency in [[Wikipedia:Neo-Paganism|Neo-Pagan]] culture due to crossover of shamanistic and spiritual elements that has brought otherkin to the attention of contemporary pagans.

To date, there has been little formal study or publication of culture and theory relating to otherkin. One of the first reference volumes to deal with the otherkin culture specifically, ''A Field Guide to Otherkin'', by Lupa, was released in April 2007. The book contains the results of surveys distributed throughout the otherkin and therianthropy communities by the author and volunteers.

==Otherkin and therianthropy==

Otherkin bears no small resemblance to [[therianthropy]], and some people consider them the same thing and use them interchangeably. Of these, some might feel there is insufficient difference between the concepts to present them separately, while others might be outsiders who are not familiar with the nuances or history of the ideas and communities surrounding them. However, in tradition to date, otherkin has come to be associated with people who experience an affinity with an animal, creature, or being which might ordinarily be considered mythological, or sometimes entirely unique/alien. In contrast, therianthropy is heavily connected to the affinity for ''existing'', real-world animals which have been observed to live today in nature or to have lived in the past. Typically, someone who identifies with fairies, elves, dragons, gryphons, unicorns, or even angelic or demonic beings might be seen as otherkin. While one who identifies with [[wolves]], [[foxes]], [[bear]]s, [[cat]]s big and small, or [[otter]]s might be seen as a therianthrope.

In some cases, a specific person might consider themselves - if they use a formal term or subculture association at all - a member of either community in spite of their species/entity connection. For example, someone who feels they are a part of the general otherkin community socially might use the term therianthropy to describe the mechanics of their own nature.

==Otherkin and furry fandom==

[[Furry fan]]s appear to be generally aware of otherkin and therianthropy. The practices and viewpoints of many [[furry lifestyle]]rs have some similarity to these ideas; because of this, some lifestylers associate with one or both terms. Likewise, while [[furry fandom]] in general might not have been formed to explore spiritual connections with animals and other creatures, many otherkin and therianthropes find the content and subject matter of furry appealing because of their own interests. In the opposite direction, many [[furry fan]]s discover the otherkin community through the fandom and begin to take part in it as well.

A noticeable number of people within the otherkin community are also furry fans in some capacity and frequently attend events such as furry [[convention]]s in addition to otherkin-specific social events. The philosophy and spirituality tracks at some conventions have hosted otherkin and therian speakers. Panels and discussions on mythology have also attracted otherkin to participate. Otherkin who are artists have used furry conventions to display their work, and those with an interest in make-up and costuming have attended for masquerade contests and dances.

Some otherkin feel that the furry fandom is a more relaxed atmosphere in which to explore ideas of animal and human relations and hybrids, seeing the fandom's lack of core spiritual doctrines as neutral ground. Due to this, some people decide to leave the general otherkin and therian communities in favor of furry. Furry events are sometimes popular as a meeting place with otherkin who are geographically isolated from kin-specific events.

===Controversy within furry fandom===

Opinions vary as to whether or not their association with the fandom is positive, negative, or irrelevant. Some people find the association of furry with things beyond its base definition of the appreciation of [[anthropomorphic]] animals in art and fiction to be inappropriate, ridiculous, or uncomfortable. Because of this, otherkin and therian connections or intermingling with the fandom have taken on a pejorative tint for such people. Much as furry lifestylers are sometimes disliked, otherkin might be made to feel unwelcome or derided by some furry fans.

A large degree of fandom awareness has been spread not only by contact with otherkin within the fandom, but by the adoption of otherkin as another topic with which to portray elements of Furry in humorous or negative light by websites such as [[Something Awful]] and [[Crush! Yiff! Destroy!]]. Due to such framing, otherkin has for some people become a generic term to identify furries who feel there is something more to their animal avatar than [[role-playing]]. Some also point out that a good deal of otherkin awareness has been spread by sardonic humor, which often singles out individuals with the most outrageous behavior or controversial opinions. As a result there appear to be inaccuracies in the knowledge of many furry fans and nonfurs relating to more moderate members of the otherkin community.

In response, others have said in spite of this confusion, there are those who identify as otherkin while putting forth dubious claims and questionable behavior. Because of the effect of visibility from the crowd, it is often the most over-the-top examples that are seen by outsiders, and thus tend to be associated with the entire fandom, not unlike many of the other problems with publicity that furry fandom has endured over time.

==Outside otherkin==

Otherkin is a label to describe personal beliefs, experiences, and traits that occur in a variety of combinations depending on the individual. As there is no consensus on what qualifies as otherkin, not everyone who shares similar beliefs feels the term is appropriate or useful for themselves.

Some who might otherwise describe themselves as otherkin downplay or conceal the affiliation. Citing outbreaks of controversy, individuals have confessed reluctance to reveal the extent of their beliefs for fear of losing status or being ostracized by a particular community, to avoid employment difficulties, or relieve pressure from friends and family.

Transformation is another common theme in Greek mythology. Many stories were recorded by the poet Ovid in his collection ''The Metamorphoses,'' a narrative of over 100 stories from myth and legend. Many stories surround a maiden or a man transformed into a beast often for sex or as a punishment. The comic follows characters Marty, Arthur, Douglas, Paulie, Taye and Ken and their daily lives. The first four issues focus on Marty and his way out of the closet and towards his first love, while later issues develop the other characters.

''Circles'' is published by [[Rabbit Valley]] and is available through their website. There are currently seven issues of the comic as of January 2008. Issue #1 is not readily available, except as part of Vol. 1, which collects issues #0 through #4 ''(pictured)''.

==Setting==
The setting is [[Wikipedia:Boston|Boston]], in the early years of the 21st century. The first issue is dated Spring 2001, and each issue corresponds to one season of time, so the latest issue as of this writing, issue #7, is Fall 2002. The comic deals primarily with six characters inhabiting a house at the fictional address of 6 [[Wikipedia:Alfred Kinsey|Kinsey]] Circle (a pun on the [[Wikipedia:Kinsey scale|Kinsey scale]], where a rating of six means that the subject is exclusively [[homosexual]]).

====Paul "Paulie" Mayhew====
Drawn as a dog (possibly a [[Golden Retriever]], but he has certain features common to other dog breeds as well, so this is unknown). At age 52 at the beginning of the series, Paulie is by far the oldest character. He acts as a sort of patriarch of the Kinsey Gang, a father figure who considers everyone in the house a member of his family. He refers to nearly everyone as "Dear" (an uncommon habit among British gay men). He does not work, having inherited an undisclosed amount of money from his mother's side of the family (Doug often refers to him as "idle rich"). He is the long-time selves-proclaimed husband of Douglas Pope, with whom he inhabits the top floor of the Kinsey Circle house.

Paulie was born in England, to a British father of Scottish lineage and an American mother who was a naturalized citizen. He grew up in England in the 60s, raised primarily by his father and his Aunt Bettina, who moved in following his mother's passing. Along with his first boyfriend, a slightly older boy named Colin, he became a huge fan of the Beatles, and little Beatle-isms find their way into Paulie's dialogue from time to time.

He moved to America in the early 70s and took up residence with his mother's sister in Boston. After her passing, he became increasingly involved in the gay scene, thanks to his involvement with John Brockhurst. Through John, he also became romantically involved with Arthur Korsky, and to a young man by the name of Keith. When a friend of Paulie's by the name of Graham killed himself after being diagnosed with [[Wikipedia:AIDS|AIDS]], he decided he was going to withdraw from his more promiscuous lifestyle to protect himself. At his "going away" party, Arthur hooked up with Keith, and the three of them went home together. Back home, Arthur passed out, Keith made a move on Paulie, and an inebriated Paulie decided that one last fling couldn't hurt. Through this liaison, Paulie became [[Wikipedia:HIV|HIV]] positive.

After a period of shock and mourning, Paulie emerged from his grief and began to try to do things with the considerable wealth he'd inherited from his mother's family. He made donations to various charities, gave to local schools, helped friends get started in business (including John, who bought a gay-themed bookstore called Triangle Books), and started obtaining medicines and treatments to defer the long-term effects of his HIV. He was asked to lecture at several of the schools he'd donated to on [[Wikipedia:Safe sex|safe sex]], and at such a lecture at [[Wikipedia:Harvard University|Harvard University]], he met Douglas Pope. He began a relationship with Doug several months later, and the two have been together ever since. Recently, he has also become an "Uncle" to Doug's son, Jason.

Many of the comic's stories begin from Paulie's point of view, in the form of journal entries. It is indicated that Paulie wants to leave them behind when he dies for Douglas to read, so that he may remember their time together.

Paulie represents a lot of the heart of the comic, and a recent poll shows him as the favorite character of fans of the series. His combination of quiet reliability, love for the family he has created, and the pain of his past mistake seems to have struck a chord with those who enjoy this series.

====Douglas Pope====
Drawn as a [[Wikipedia:River otter|river otter]]. Doug Pope is one of the more conflicted characters in the series, having a tendency to follow his passions and to let his feelings get the better of him. He is 32, working as a financial consultant for a company in Boston. He is the long-standing self-proclaimed husband of Paulie Mayhew and the father and surviving parent of Jason Pope.

Doug was born in [[Wikipedia:Cambridge, Massachusetts|Cambridge, Massachusetts]] to upper middle-class parents. His childhood has been described as being largely uneventful, although he admits to having feelings for men at even a fairly young age. After enrolling in [[Wikipedia:Harvard Business School|Harvard Business School]], he met a young woman named Linda and became study partners with her, as well as romantically entangled with her. Upon meeting Paulie at a safe-sex lecture, however, he became increasingly drawn towards Paulie, despite being engaged to Linda.

When Paulie rejected his advances, showing no desire to be the "other woman" in Doug's relationships, Doug, confused and stung by Paulie's rejection, stormed to Linda's dorm room and had unprotected sex with her. This confused him even more, and he withdrew from everyone for a time, finally coming to the conclusion over a boiling pot of noodles that Paulie was the person he wanted to be with. He had a very painful break-up with Linda, who did not tell him that she was now pregnant with their child. He and Paulie reconciled and have been together ever since. Linda eventually told Doug about the birth of their son, Jason, and he attempted to make some contact with Jason, occasionally visiting them in Maine.

When Arthur Korsky returned to Kinsey Circle, it created awkwardness, and when Doug learned that Arthur was indirectly responsible (at least in his mind) for getting Paulie infected, it drove a wedge between them. After the events of September 11, 2001 (this was added later. The original script, according to Andrew French, did not have this reference), and learning of Linda's death in an accident with a drunk driver, Doug, suddenly a single parent, let his emotions build, until a confrontation with Arthur almost drove Paulie to leave him. The threat of losing Paulie finally broke Doug's defenses down, and he apologized to Arthur for the anger he'd been carrying. Several months later, he decided to take responsibility for his son, and, after a custody battle with Linda's parents, brought Jason home to Boston to live. Despite some awkward moments, Jason revealed that both he and his late mother rather liked Paulie for inadvertently encouraging Doug to come out, preventing Linda and him from entering a loveless marriage. Only time will tell how things turn out between them all, but the indications have been positive.

====Arthur Korsky====
Drawn as a [[Wikipedia:Kodiak Bear|Kodiak Bear]]. Arthur is in his mid-40s, the second oldest of the Kinsey Six, just after Paulie. He is self-employed as an artist, freelance graphic designer, and occasional handyman. He lives in the finished basement of the Kinsey Circle house, having decorated it in what he refers to as Tiki chic. He has also made part of the basement his art studio. He is responsible for the majority of the house's interior color/design, and often refers to the basement as his "Art Cave."

There has not yet been an issue centering around Arthur's backstory, but we do know that he was born in [[Wikipedia:Hartford, Connecticut|Hartford, Connecticut]]. He must have moved to Boston sometime in the mid to late seventies and became romantically involved with both John Brockhurst and Paulie Mayhew. He blamed himself for Paulie's HIV infection, as Keith had come home that night with the intention of being with Arthur. It was only after Arthur, very drunk, passed out, that Keith turned his attentions on Paulie. He left the house for New York after discovering Paulie had become infected by Keith, but it's not known what he did there. He returned to Boston and the Kinsey Circle house in the late 90s, and his guilty attitude helped fuel Doug's belief that he was responsible for Paulie's illness. They have only recently begun to reconcile, but Arthur has gotten involved with more charity work through Doug, and the two of them seem to have at least one thing in common: a great love for Paulie.

====Kenneth "Ken" Brassai====
Drawn as a [[cheetah]]. If everyone in the house seems to embody a stereotype of the animal that represents them, then Ken's embodiment is that he's fast and fickle. Little is known about Ken, as he hasn't had an issue of his own yet, but he's known for making and breaking relationships with at amazing speed. Within the course of the first 4 comics (a year in the comic), it became evident that he was with at least 5 different people, though we can safely assume the number was larger than that. He works as a model, often naked, and works out quite a bit, both at home and at a gym. He is 24, and he lives on the second floor of the Kinsey Circle house.

So far, Ken has mostly acted as a foil for he other characters, although there is the promise of a future storyline that will help explain his behavior. He has problems with jealousy and seems to dislike people who cling to him. Ken prefers the fun of a few one night stands to the emotional depth of a relationship. He has recently hooked up with a young man named Michael Lang and are in a six month relationship as of issue #6. This is unexpectedly longer than normal for Ken as far as the household is aware.

====Taylor "Taye" Dooley====
Drawn as an [[Wikipedia:Eastern Grey Kangaroo|Eastern Grey]] [[Kangaroo]]. The best way to describe Taye is as a force of nature (as quoted directly from the creators themselves). Intensely affectionate, bold to the point of being forward, and seemingly unafraid to take any action, Taye has, nevertheless, mostly been defined so far by his relationship to Marty. He is 23, recently graduated from Boston University, and lives with Marty on the ground floor of the Kinsey Circle house. He is an actor, having understudied for Angel in the local touring company of ''[[Wikipedia:Rent (musical)|Rent]]''. He currently works as a waiter in a French restaurant called La Maison du Chanteur (House of the Singer) where all the waiters sing. (Note that this restaurant is fictional, although there are several restaurants that share the same idea. The "Bravo" chain of restaurants, for example, often employ opera singers of young voice students as waiters, to perform arias, scenes, duets and quartets from operas).

His nature was kept largely a secret to people who were being introduced to Circles. The previews of the comic did not contain images of him, only references, and he does not appear until close to the end of issue #1. His build up climaxes in an appearance that the writer has described as a tribute to the first appearance of [[Wikipedia:Mary Jane Watson|Mary Jane Watson]] in the original ''[[Wikipedia:Spider-Man|Spider-Man]]'' comics. He and Marty shared an immediate attraction to one another which continued to grow as they became roommates and has culminated in their becoming a couple.

Taye seems to have an irrepressible nature, saying rather outrageous things at times. He also seems to be an extremely patient and gentle individual, submitting to Marty's desire to wait on actual sex for months after they began dating. Their new relationship tends to book-end the old "married" relationship nature of Paulie and Doug. Taye has not had an issue of his own yet, but we know he was born in [[Wikipedia:Sydney, Australia|Sydney, Australia]] (but has no accent, as his parents moved to America shortly after his birth.) He is a bit effeminate, but he had no problem belting his ex-lover, Roger, when Roger was threatening Marty in public.

====Martin "Marty" Miller====
Drawn as a common striped [[Skunk]]. Marty is the last of the primary Kinsey Circle characters. The preview comic released in 2000 centers upon Marty's learning of a house that was looking for a tenant, and issue #1 features Marty's introduction to the other characters. He acts as an [[Wikipedia:audience surrogate|audience surrogate]] in that first appearance. He is 20 when the series starts and is a student at Boston University. Although he studies business, his real love is in working on computer video games and has aspirations of becoming a programmer. Marty is mildly obese but is comfortable with his weight, and Taye, his boyfriend, prefers this look. Marty's family is [[Wikipedia:Jewish|Jewish]], but his family is relaxed about observance with the exception of his grandmother. She is strictly [[Wikipedia:kosher|kosher]].

Marty and Taye's relationship is a primary storyline of the first four issues. They met in issue #1, Marty declared his interest to his family in issue #2, they kissed for the first time in issue #3, and they consummated their relationship in issue #4. Thereafter, the book has been focusing more on the other characters of the series. Marty has gotten along well with all the other characters, although some issues of jealousy over Taye caused friction between him and Ken for a bit. Marty is [[Wikipedia:Coming out|out]] to his family as of issue #2, and they are accepting of his and Taye's relationship with only his grandmother displaying disapproval.

He is old friends with Paulie and Arthur, having been romantically involved with them together as a triad during the 70s. He's very perceptive about people's actions (as demonstrated in issue #4, when he and Ken were discussing the [[Wikipedia:Hanuka|Hanuka]] gift Ken had given to Marty).

====Mrs. Nussbaum====
Drawn as a [[Wikipedia:Grey Squirrel|Grey]] [[squirrel]] first appearing in issue #2. She lives a few houses away from the boys and speaks in a rather Old-World accent. She and Paulie are old friends, having both lived in the neighborhood longer than almost anyone else. She has a playfully antagonistic relationship with Doug, and they often trade recipes with each other. Despite how they treat each other, she and Doug are very good friends. She cooks foods in incredibly large portions.

====Carter Allen====
Drawn as a [[Red Fox]] first mentioned in issue #2, but first appearing in issue #3. He bears no relationship to the local Boston D.J. He is the father of two children who seem of mixed feelings on the Kinsey Circle household. Carter Allen, himself, is quite resentful of the Kinsey Gang and tries to steer his sons away from their household at all costs.

====Michael Lang====
Drawn as a [[Wikipedia:field mouse|field mouse]] first appearing in issue #4. Very little has been revealed of him since his introduction. He has been in a 6 month relationship with Ken since they met. It is safe to assume (by the way he greeted Ken for the first time) that the two are very similar.

Drawn as a [[Wikipedia:Northern River Otter|river otter]] first appearing in issue #6. He is Doug and Linda's son. Although the relationship between him and his "Uncle Paulie" started off rocky, a mutual enjoyment of [[Wikipedia:The Beatles|The Beatles]] brought them closer together.

Most furry artists have an active connection to furry fandom. Many attend furry [[convention]]s and [[furmeet]]s, and some even organize specialized artist furmeets. While some furry artists are able to make a living from their furry artwork, most do not. '''Sage Nadia''' (Sah-Geh Nah-Dee-Ah) is the moniker used by the former administrator, now Overseer of [[fchan]]. Currently, due to many misunderstandings regarding her name, being taken from popular imageboard culture, she uses the moniker Nadia.

== Nadia ==

Nadia is a lesbian who openly dislikes porn. She claims her avatar is a Scorpiontaur.

She was known for her no-nonsense, abrasive, direct and very iron handed method of administration, and also for respect for most artists, furry or not.

Her stated philosophy was that she could create a system by which a *chan style board could survive as a respected and useful part of the community. During her administration, the popularization of the [[DNP]] allowed for many artists who did not wish their work to be distributed to request their work be exempt from display.

Her initial plan upon taking control of fchan was to initiate a series of events which would cause the community to implode upon itself. This plan lasted less than a month. She came to the conclusion that if fchan died, it would only be replaced by many more clones. As long as she had fchan, she would be able to shape the future of how an image board could be effective and eventually accepted within the community as a whole.

She then created a threefold plan.

== Nadia's three step plan ==

Step one was to dominate the boards. To create a hatred of the users toward her while elevating the users love for her assistant [[Xenofur]]. This included popularizing the DNP and making it available to any artist who wished to be placed within it able to be without question. In this manner she was also able to target who in the community would be least likely to accept the system and learn what changes were needed to build a better image board. One of her major changes was the removal of user rights to post non-constructive criticism, a decision which led to the banning of many trolls.

Step two was to disappear from the community eye. In order to achieve this, she appointed Xenofur to take her place as Administrator, but remained on board as an adviser. During this time she helped guide Xenofur, and eventually [[Raven_Rivers|Raven]] into following her plan. The major factors involving tightening of the system code and board itself, trimming the DNP, and bringing on more staff to assist in policing the boards.

Step three was to return the board to the initial model. To trim staff, removing most ranks, and to trust more in the rules and in a form of structured anarchy than in the previous two steps. This step was initially created to be a safety net and was only intended to be used in the case of human error.

== Nadia's retirement ==

As part of the second step in her plan, Nadia retired from active adminship. In doing so she passed the job of administration over to her assistant [[Xenofur]]. For a brief time she remained on as a ninja-moderator, but remained hidden from public view. Shortly after she removed herself from the public eye almost entirely, remaining as an adviser to Xenofur. This included her remaining active in the administrative channel of irc and her retaining root control over the system. Xenofur was at all times aware of her access, and both had made an active decision to conceal this knowledge from the public and remainder of staff.

During this time she acted in an advisory capacity only.

== Nadia's return ==

On December 16, 2007 Nadia seized control of the server, locking everyone including the owner out at the root level. The next morning she returned [[Xenofur]]'s access and returned access to the server owner a week later. The events leading up to her decision to initiate step three have been speculated on, but no public statement has been issued.

Apparently, Nadia had decided [[Raven_Rivers|Raven]] was no longer stable enough to be trusted with administrative duties. She felt he had lost his objectivity and his flexibility. The final decision was made after Raven ordered Xenofur to remove Nadia's irc admin flag, immediately followed by his anger at Xenofur for not removing all her access. Contrary to popular rumor, it was not the removal of her flag which instigated her return as much as it was the lack of cooperation. This action led to Xenofur leaving for a week and the system being without any programmer or system guru other than Nadia to deal with any issues.

In the interests of system stability, Nadia seized control a week later.

== Sage? ==

According to Nadia, the term Sage in her original name had nothing to do with the herb or with being wise. It was taken from popular [[imageboard]] culture where the term Sage is intended to be used when there is nothing important being said and therefore no bumping of the thread occurs.

In her name, the term Sage is taken from the [[Japanese]] term 下げる, pronounced sah-geh-roo, which means ''to lower''.

== Nadia's viewpoint ==

Nadia made the following comment early on in her adminship of fchan. It is considered by many to be the most controversial statement she ever made. Some consider it to be very cold and crass while many others consider it to be spot on.

To date, no individual has ever asked her to explain the meaning of her statement.

Much of Sheezy's community was abandoned after the rules change took effect. This migration left many with few alternatives. Fur Affinity had suffered from major security holes and a hacking in during Summer of 2005. The site was shut down on 1 August 2005 due to a disagreement between lead coder Jheryn and host provider [[Arcturus]], the primary administrators of the site. At that time Fur Affinity had 12,174 user accounts and nearly 100,000 submissions. Arcturus and supporters went on to found [[ArtPlz]].

Over the course of 2005, Fur Affinity was able to raise $1,500 in donations towards the purchase of new hardware for its primary server; a server which would, unfortunately, not realize itself until the middle of 2006. Thanks to the community, Fur Affinity was able to build a stronger, faster server than the site originally used for operation.

Fur Affinity returned to operation in December 2005 with a solid backbone and more efficient coding, although full operational status would not be reached until December 10 due to a defect in the ASUS motherboard which powered the server. During Fur Affinity's official re-opening on December 10th, over 10,000 submissions for music, art and writing were submitted to the site during its initial 12 hours. These submissions included imported art from returning users and pieces not previously posted.

Fur Affinity is assisting in the planning of a [[convention]] known as [[United!]], tentatively scheduled for August 2007.

== Features and rules ==

Fur Affinity's features for users include the ability to allow users to track new updates from particular [[artist]]s; highlight favorites; and upload a wide variety of art (images, music and stories). The site attempts to promote community through its comments system and individual journals.

While works of all ratings are accepted (other than ''photographic nudes, "[[cub]]" related [[pornography]] and images whose intent are to slander or discredit others''<ref>[http://www.furaffinity.net/faq/ Fur Affinity FAQ]</ref>), art rated as mature or adult is not shown to visitors, or to users who have not specified it as a preference (which requires giving a date of birth indicating an age over 18). In addition, a tagging system is in use, but in the current version of the website software it doesn't have any effect on the site functionality, being used only as a visual addition to the submission page. Previously, users could browse and block the display of art based on these tags, but much like the search feature it was disabled due to performance issues, and haven't been brought back since.

Fur Affinity used to have a search feature that allowed users to search for specific art on the site, but this feature became disabled in mid-2006, listed as 'temporarily disabled', and a faux search feature was temporarily implemented on April Fool's Day, much to the chagrin of some users.

==== Pornographic cub art ====

August 2006 saw the restart of an internal administrative debate over the presence of [[pornographic]] underage furry artwork (or "cub art").<ref>''"[http://dragonmyr.deviantart.com/journal/10641590/ DA account reactivated -- FA Truths revealed]"''. Posted by [[Myr]] on November 6, 2006 and deleted several days after.</ref> Such art was forbidden by the site's Terms of Service, which specified that "depictions of sexually immature characters in any sexual situation are not permitted on Fur Affinity", but bans for this rule were not uniformly enforced. As with previous discussions, administrators could not come to an agreement on whether or not to modify site policy.<ref>[http://www.furaffinityforums.net/showthread.php?tid=4335&pid=63174#pid63174 Comment by The Dragoneer on previous attempts to solve the cub debate]. Posted on November 6, 2006.</ref> Over the following months the issue developed into a public debate, with forum polls and discussion suggesting that the site's members were divided on the topic.

On November 5, it was announced that such work would be allowed, with the requirement of mandatory tagging. The main reasons given for this decision were that no actual minors were harmed during the artwork's creation, and that depictions of many other illegal activities, such as rape, murder, and drug use, were permitted. More then half of those who left, however, have decided to give FA another chance.

==== Ferrox code update ====

As of June 21, 2006 the site announced an impending upgrade to the site. FA opted to shed their previous naming convention (v1, v2 and v3) and go by codename for the major upgrade, known as "Ferrox". The code reached an estimated 60% completion before being pushed back to an early Winter/Spring 2007 release in effort to follow new quality and coding standards.

The effective release date is "when it's ready". Ferrox is not going to be released until the coding team feels it has undergone sufficient testing and bug hunting.

Features announced as introduced or improved upon are:
* A new user interface supporting better web programming standards, user-requested features and more streamlined navigation for ease-of-use
* Revised submission interfaces for art, music and stories to allow for faster, more accurate uploads and provide unique features for each artistic area
* Re-written server back-end to better support scalability and future upgrades
* Time-limited editable user comments
* Flood detection to prevent spam and abuse
* Enhanced site security focusing on account creation and content delivery
* A flexible keyword-based search system
* Communities, allowing users to post art directly to themed submission groups
* Community-sponsored error messages inspired by [[VCL]]
* Monthly themes and mini-contests where users can obtain ranks and profile enhancements
* Better integrated help and site information.

== Mascots ==

[[Fender]] is the Fur Affinity [[mascot]]. He was primarily created by artist [[K-9]], based upon a character concept by [[Preyfar]]. He is half [[fox]] and half [[ferret]].

A second mascot, [[Rednef]], a female dragon, was announced in May 2007. She has been shown in the Fur Affinity header on April 1, 2007.

* In less than a year since the site's re-launch, Fur Affinity gained over 45,000 users and over 300,000 submissions.
* The site transfers a daily average of nearly 80 GB of data and well over 10,000,000 individual files. The site's peak bandwidth record stands at 33.2Mbit.

* Fur Affinity gets approximately 2.5 million page hits per day (estimated on 01/11/2007).

==== The hardware ====
There are currently two servers in use by Fur Affinity:
* The primary server, Gecko, is a dual processor Intel Xeon 3.0Ghz system with 4GB of RAM. It acts as both a storage and as an HTTP server.
* The backend DB server, Tiamat, is a dual CPU, dual core Opteron 2212 with 4x2GB DDR2-533(ECC) memory, 4x74GB 10k SATA WD740ADFD hard drives on 3ware 9650SE-4LPML hardware raid card, running in RAID10 configuration.
Gecko is planned to be replaced by it's successor, Bahamut, which is a single CPU, dual core 2.0GHz Opteron, with 2x1GB DDR2-667 and an I/O subsystem of 4x500GB Seagate drives on 3ware 9650SE-4LPML hardware RAID card in RAID5 configuration.

The word '''furry''' has several meanings, dependent on the context in which it is used. Someone who says they are furry is generally expressing an interest in anthropomorphic animals and/or creatures.

Unfavorable attention from the media has created a negative stereotype of a furry. Contrary to how a Furry is portrayed in pop culture and mass media, how deep or meaningful an interest in Furry is varies greatly from person to person. Also, the breadth of a person's interest in the fandom, and what ultimately makes them furry, is specific to each individual. Below is a list of common interests with which a fur is likely to identify. A furry may be interested in any or all of them, to any degree.

Interest in anthropomorphic animals and/or creatures can be as simple as the many popular furry cartoon characters, known as [[funny animal]]s. Some furs believe they have a spiritual connection to a particular animal which is typically their [[fursona]], but also may be a [[totem]]. From within the fandom, anything classified as an anthropomorphic animal and/or creature could be called a furry. Since mainstream characters are generally not created with furries in mind, the furry context is presumed by most outsiders to not be present despite subcultural interest.
