Hey. I'm Dana Dragonpaw. I'd rather not give out my real name or exact location, but I'm a Canadian furry. Um, I don't know if I'll be adding anything, but I may edit some stuff (I don't claim to know everything about furry fandom, but I am a bit of a spelling and grammar Nazi).

Anyway, I just thought I may as well make my presence known here. :)

Y'know, I'm also pretty new here. I was just a bit too shy to make a post about it.
And, like you, I don't think I can contribute that much, besides being a grammar and spelling Nazi.
Welcome, anyway.
Okay I've decided to write a story that is basically revolving around a world in which there are atleast 3 races: The Canin (Wolf Furries) Talking wolves( I'm going to choose a name for them later, basically they are Wolves that are able to communicate with the Canin and are basically guides for them as well) and then there are the Elders( Bad Guys , Think Neanderthals but like a dwarf kinda thing) So anyway the main character Lance (Canin) is going to go on a quest to find a mystical object called the WolfStar, Which is incidentally the title of the story. Would you guys/girls be willing to have me bounce Ideas off of you.
Hello. My name is Yoshi Prower. I am block ID #2989 and my IP is 71.65.75.225. I didn't have a change to fart and I was banned for having a "known troll personality". So you just ban people without any reason just because they have a "known troll personality"? I haven't done anything wrong. My ban wasn't fair at all}}

However, the handle Yoshiprower has been widely associated with trolling in some LJ communities (most recently in [http://community.livejournal.com/zetatoys/ zetatoys]) and elsewhere, and at the very least this person needs to choose a different user name. What are people's thoughts on this matter? Should the username ''and'' the IP continue to be blocked or should we allow this person a chance under a different user name? [[User:Simba B|Simba B]] 22:07, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
:IMHO, give him a second chance. If the prior behavior returns, his chance can be reversed as easily, just my two cents =/ [[User:Spirou|Spirou]] 22:16, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
::I don't know. After posts like [http://community.livejournal.com/zetatoys/61311.html this], and especially what was said [http://community.livejournal.com/zetatoys/61849.html here], I can't help but feel like no good can come of having someone under that user name. Perhaps we can ban the username but give the IP a month or so to be, ehm, distracted by something else shiny?

Hello. My name is Yoshi Prower. I am block ID #2989 and my IP is 71.65.75.225. I didn't have a change to fart and I was banned for having a "known troll personality". == Re: Question for vandals ==
"Furries are gay" is closer to "Furries are idiots", than "Furries are sexually attracted to members of their born gender". That said, the infamous Taura Learfox drawing showing a rainbow-bedecked fox doing his Iron Eyes Cody impersonation certainly has become a lulzcow of epic proportions and has probably fueled a misconception amoung people unfamiliar with Furry that Furry's a Gay thing. Further renderings of various specie of Furry taking it in the pooper probably haven't helped much, either. True, Furry embraces a long and disquieting list of proclivities, but it does seem like the AB (ORCA STACKS!) and Gay Furries seem to stand out most among the P&L crowd. [[User:733|733]] 22:23, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
:I am familiar with the use of "gay" as a general insult (hey I went to high school too) but it does seem alot of these guys are (overly) obsessed with actual gay furries. Many of them are probably bored teenagers so attempting to stimulating brain patterns resembling actual thought may be an exercise in futility. [[User:Simba B|Simba B]] 22:32, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

::Maybe one of the reasons that Furry has the Gay reputation is that so many Furries wave their sexuality around like a flag? The fourth thing you tell us about yourself is that you're bisexual. Nothing wrong with being bisexual, but is that information really so important that you have to tell us about it or that you feel you have to define yourself by it? My boyfriend knows I'm Bi, but it's not something I would ever announce to the world at large. I've seen more than a few WF entries where a person lists their sexuality as the second thing they say about themslves, right after their name. Maybe if less Furries defined themselves by their sexuality, Furry as a whole would be less defined by sexuality as well. I agree that most of the vandals are just looking for the lulz, but it's not like we haven't handed them a huge box of ammo to takes shots at us with. [[User:733|733]] 21:35, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

:::I think the flag-waving furry image is in the eye of the beholder more than anything else. At any rate, I don't consider this kind of information "ammo". Personally, I think that many furs who are gay or bisexual are more secure in their sexual orientation and mature about it than the people who obsess over them, which is why it is even an issue in the first place. Sex is part of the deal, you can allow it to coexist peacefully with the other stuff and ignore the criticism, or you can let it bother you. I don't think you'll get very far trying to convince others of the squeaky-clean point of view, but you are welcome to your own opinions. I see the problem as immature, bored teenagers who are still stuck in the highschool mindset about sex, not mature adults being open about who they are. Hi Simba. I notice you reverted the edits made to the entry on [[AussieHusky]] (and eventually blocked those who made them). Although it could have been written a little better (and was unreferenced), I believe it *was* a legitimate attempt to add to the entry. On the OzFurry mailing list, AussieHusky did claim to have made chocolates for the event, which were going to be given out as prizes at some point. -- [[User:Higgs Raccoon|Higgs Raccoon]] 21:32, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
::Well, the reason I blocked the person who made them was that as well as the fact that they created a nonsense article, and when that was deleted, registered an account and recreated the article. The edits to [[AussieHusky]] weren't enough alone (IMHO) to be a problem. It's a little unclear to me what exactly this person is up to as I got an e-mail asking for the ban to be lifted, and I replied saying if they'd stop creating nonsense articles I would lift the ban. == Edits to AussieHusky ==

I went back and read the deleted article and I don't see any other way to interpret what was there other than as a nonsense article. [[User:Simba B|Simba B]] 21:36, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
:It's not furry related, nor is it a disambiguation page. Even on the latter, it wouldn't be necessary. I highly doubt someone looking to know what Ctrl+C does on a computer would go to a furry wiki. [[User:SpazKitty|Spaz Kitty]] 01:21, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
== Owner ==

Sorry, i didn't know "owner" was already deleted once, but since owner-pet relationships are very common between furries, and already being [[pet]], i thought it would be good having its counterpart.
(By the way, i'm not sure if this is the correct way to talk to an user, i hope is ok) [[User:KamuiNeko|Kamui Neko]]
:It's ok, although I have to admit I find it odd that [[pet]] still exists, because [[owner]] was deleted quite a while ago when I was last active (several months ago).
:And yes, this is the correct way to contact [[WikiFur]] users.
:Finally, you should sign your messages and talk page comments with four tildes, like this <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>, that automatically datestamps and signs your user name. [[User:Simba B|Simba B]] 19:20, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
Hello. My name is Yoshi Prower. I am block ID #2989 and my IP is 71.65.75.225. I didn't have a change to fart and I was banned for having a "known troll personality".
Perhaps we can ban the username but give the IP a month or so to be, ehm, distracted by something else shiny?
It was originally a positive exclamation in [[Foxen]]'s [[Foxish|Foxish language]], but the word has degenerated over time from its original meaning of "a cheerful greeting, an energetic 'yes!'" to an expression of sexual interest or activity (see [[Foxish|Foxish Language]] for details on the lexicon). It is now a very common word which can be used as an interjection, an adjective ("yiffy"), a verb, or a noun (in which case it typically refers to [[anthropomorphic]] [[erotica]]).
In Foxish, '''yiff''' initially meant "yes!" or an enthused "hello!". (It should be noted that, while it is a matter of preference, many people highly dislike the use of "yiff" as a verb and prefer seeing the real English equivalents used, as they find that "yiff" makes sentences awkward, lacks a clear definition, or "sounds stupid.")
'''deviantART''' is one of the largest online art galleries and discussion sites (approximately 2 million existing members and growing.) Many professional "[[furry artist|anthro artists]]" submit their work there, as well as amateurs.

* '''Address''': http://www.deviantart.com/
* '''Ran from/to''': August 6th, 2000 - present

deviantART does not allow [[pornography|pornographic]] material to be submitted; however, "tasteful" nudity is allowed. This rule is enforced very strictly in cases of furry-oriented sexuality due to concerns of [[zoophilia]] or [[bestiality]].

As of August 2006, deviantART has a top-level anthro category, potentially exposing a greater proportion of the deviantART audience to anthropomorphic art.

Various "clubs" have been formed to connect the furry community on deviantART, similar to communities on [[LiveJournal]]. A handful of anthro-oriented chat rooms have also formed since August 2004.
'''Knarmah Fox''' ('''Tim Palumbo''') or Vyprosyn is a [[red fox]] electronic musician in the furry fandom from [[Wikipedia:Chicago|Chicago]], [[Wikipedia:Illinois|Illinois]], U.S.A. He produces various kinds of electronic music, including Trance, [[Wikipedia:Melodic Trance|Melodic Trance]], Dance, some [[Wikipedia:EBM|EBM]] and Industrial. He uses [[Wikipedia:FL Studio|FL Studio]] and as of November 2007, at 16 years old, has some years of experience in electronic music. He is influenced by [[Wikipedia:Apoptygma Berzerk|Apoptygma Berzerk]], [[Wikipedia:VNV Nation|VNV Nation]], DJ Tiesto, Armin Van Burren and Floorfilla. But his main influence is a trance producer from Sweden he met on Acidplanet.com that goes by the name Terra Nation.

Knarmah Fox studied and experimented with different software programs and keyboards, and has taken piano lessons to better understand music.

Tim also creates all his own website's and page designs, he is also is the founder of a game communitie called 'EyE-Games' that launched in 2006. In 2008 Tim announced the new web site design and feature that he created and edited himself. You can find his content all over the web, he has created many loops that are used in websites and in games that other people created. For a while Tim was accepting requests for music/loops for websites and videos done by other people, but soon stopped for the amount of work he was doing for no credit. Its been rumour that he is working on a website design company, but nothing has been said about it yet.
Phantom tail syndrome is similar to phantom limb syndrome which is where a person with missing limbs will still feel that limb. Phantom tail syndrome though is when you feel body parts that you never had before, mostly tails but also animal ears and wings. The person with phantom tail syndrome will feel their extra part as if it was real, like someone with phantom limb syndrome, but don't feel pain in them at all often, which people with phantom limb syndrome often do, Though they can feel pain if the body part is stepped on or closed in a door. Also unlike those with phantom limb syndrome, they lose the feeling of these extra parts, sometimes by choice.
[[Image:Gay_flag.png|right|thumb|150px|The rainbow flag associated with [[wikipedia:homosexuality|homosexuality]] in and out of the [[furry fandom|fandom]].]]
'''Sexual preference''' describes the gender or genders that someone feels sexually attracted to. The term [[wikipedia:Sexual_orientation|'''sexual orientation''']] is often used interchangably, but the term 'sexual preference' is more broad and includes personal attitudes in between the three general categories defined as [[Wikipedia:sexual orientation|sexual orientations]].

[[Wikipedia:Heterosexuality|'''Heterosexuality''']] describes an attraction to someone of the opposite gender. [[Wikipedia:Bisexuality|'''Bisexuality''']] is the sexual attraction to members of both sexes, [[male]] and [[female]]. [[wikipedia:homosexuality|'''Homosexuality''']] describes an attraction to someone of the same gender.

The term '''gay''' has three different meanings. First, it is occasionally used synonymously with '''homosexual'''. Second, and most oftenly, it is used to refer specifically to [[male|male/male]] attraction while the term '''[[Wikipedia:lesbian|lesbian]]''' refers to [[female|female/female]] attraction. Third, '''gay''' is sometimes used to refer to both homosexuals and bisexuals.

In addition, a very small, atypical minority of individuals do not express attraction to either gender and are considered '''[[Wikipedia:asexual|asexual]]'''.

== Sexual preference and furry ==

[[non-furry|Non-furries]] generally take the position that a significantly larger proportion of the [[furry fandom]] is gay or bisexual compared to the general population.<ref name="rust"/> A lack of completely reliable survey data exists within both the fandom<ref name="rust"/> and the general population.<ref name="wiki"/> The studies that have been done suggest that this is true, though not to the large extent that is often suggested.<ref name="rust"/> Furries have suggested various theories for this.

==Categorization==

The current [[Wikipedia:scientific consensus|scientific consensus]] advocated by various social and educational organizations<ref>such as the [[Wikipedia:American Psychiatric Association|American Psychiatric Association]], the [[Wikipedia:American Psychological Association|American Psychological Association]], the [[Wikipedia:American Counseling Association|American Counseling Association]], the [[Wikipedia:National Association of Social Workers|National Association of Social Workers]], the [[Wikipedia:American Academy of Pediatrics|American Academy of Pediatrics]], the [[Wikipedia:American Association of School Administrators|American Association of School Administrators]], the [[Wikipedia:American Federation of Teachers|American Federation of Teachers]], the [[Wikipedia:National Association of School Psychologists|National Association of School Psychologists]], and the [[Wikipedia:National Education Association|National Education Association]]</ref> is that people develop their own permanent, unchangeable [[Wikipedia:sexual orientation|sexual orientation]] within one of the three categories in their [[Wikipedia:childhood|early childhood]] as [[Wikipedia:Biology and sexual orientation|a combination of genetic tendencies and their social environment]].<ref>[http://www.apa.org/pi/lgbc/publications/justthefacts.html Just the Facts About Sexual Orientation & Youth: A Primer for Principals, Educators and School Personnel] 1999, American Psychological Association</ref>

A minority of researchers, sometimes known as [[Wikipedia:Queer theory|'queer theorists']], believe that the concept of sexual orientations is a [[Wikipedia:social construct|social construct]] and that people naturally exhibit a variety of attractions. Some furries also subscribe to this view.<ref>[http://pressedfur.coolfreepages.com/essay/postvixen/index.html "Sitting On the Third Side of the Fence"] by Hannah Kincaid from [[Pressed Fur]]</ref> Although he did not advocate the social construct theory, [[Wikipedia:Alfred Kinsey|Dr. Alfred Kinsey]] stated that "[[Males]] do not represent two discrete populations, heterosexual and homosexual... The living world is a continuum in each and every one of its aspects."<ref name="scale">[http://www.kinseyinstitute.org/research/ak-hhscale.html "Kinsey's Heterosexual-Homosexual Rating Scale"] from the [http://www.kinseyinstitute.org Kinsey Institute].</ref> He postulated a [[Wikipedia:Kinsey Scale|scale]] of sexual preferences from zero to six, zero being exclusively heterosexual.<ref name="scale"/>

==Social attitudes among furries==
''[[The Sociology of Furry Fandom]]'', a 2002 paper by [[David J. Rust]] hosted at [http://www.visi.com/~phantos/furrysoc.html The Darken Hollow], found that "race, religion and sexual orientation (as divisive factors) are simply too minor to attract any real attention" and that furries have "higher tolerance for variety in sexual orientation and activity".<ref name="rust"/>

A small yet significant minority of furries self-identify as [[Christian furs|Christian]].<ref name="rust"/> Some of them believe in the [[Wikipedia:the bible and homosexuality|traditional Christian view]] that homosexual conduct is immoral and that homosexuals should be [[Wikipedia:celibacy|celibate]]. Other [[Christian furs]] believe that the Bible verses and [[Wikipedia:sacred tradition|sacred traditions]] cited against homosexuality are misinterpreted.<ref name="ark">[http://community.livejournal.com/rainbow_ark The furries of 'Rainbow Ark'] [http://community.livejournal.com/rainbow_ark/profile take this view]</ref> Both sides maintain a cordial relationship with each other and try to promote mutual understanding.<ref name="ark"/> [http://www.gaychristian.net/greatdebate.php This website] summarizes the arguments in the debate.

==Why does it seem that many furries are homosexual or bisexual?==

===General surveys===

Estimates of the incidence of homosexuality in the general population vary greatly, due in part to the lack of reliable survey data and the difficulty in defining [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_orientation sexual orientations].<ref name="wiki">[[Wikipedia:Demographics of sexual orientation|Demographics of sexual orientation]] at [[Wikipedia]]. In addition, the book stated that "10% of males in the sample were predominantly homosexual between the ages of 16 and 55".<ref>[http://www.kinseyinstitute.org/research/ak-data.html Research Summary] from the [http://www.kinseyinstitute.org Kinsey Institute].</ref> Kinsey's book, and its companion ''[[Wikipedia:Sexual Behavior in the Human Female|Sexual Behavior in the Human Female]]'', have received [[Wikipedia:Sexual Behavior in the Human Male#Criticism|vocal criticism]] for their findings and methodology.<ref>[http://www.leaderu.com/jhs/reisman.html "Kinsey and the Homosexual Revolution"] by [[Wikipedia: Judith Reisman|Dr. Judith Reisman]]</ref><ref>[http://www.swlearning.com/quant/kohler/stat/biographical_sketches/bio15.1.html Biography of Statician] [[Wikipedia:John Tukey|John W.
Several recent surveys done in [[Wikipedia:Western world|Western countries]] such as [[Wikipedia:Canada|Canada]], [[Wikipedia:Australia|Australia]], and the [[Wikipedia:United States|United States]] typically define between 1% and 10% of the general population, which an average around 5%, as homosexual or bisexual.<ref>[[Wikipedia:Demographics of sexual orientation|Demographics of sexual orientation]] at [[Wikipedia]].
===Fandom surveys===

There are multiple estimates of the percentage of gays in the furry fandom. It is often thought within the fandom that the number is high, possibly as high as 90%,<ref name="rust"/> but polls have shown differences in estimation.

*A 2007 [[Wikipedia:University of California, Davis|University of California at Davis]] study found that 37.3% of respondents were bisexual, 32.7% heterosexual, 25.5% homosexual, and 8% were [[Wikipedia:questioning (sexuality)|uncertain]].<ref>[http://studyf3.livejournal.com/1383.html "Furry Survey Results"] from University of California, Davis: Department of Psychology.
===Theories===
One viable theory involves [[Mark Merlino]], a former chair of [[ConFurence]] who co-founded the first furry [[conventions]]. [[Crush Yiff Destroy]] has suggested that Merlino actively recruited alternative lifestylers into the fandom, and that this influences furry demographics to this day.<ref>[http://www.crushyiffdestroy.com/show/merlino "Journey to the Center of Mark Merlino"]</ref>. Furries also guess that, since having a [[non-furry]] significant other and raising children may result in a fan having less time and money to devote to the fandom, gays are over-represented because they are less likely to be raising children.{{fact}} Some speculate that the negative [[Wikipedia:social stigma|social stigma]] [[Wikipedia:Furry fandom#Media coverage|attached to the fandom]] keeps away heterosexual [[mundanes]] who would otherwise feel interested. David Rust has stated that "The social variations for Furries may seem unusual from a generic, American viewpoint. However, from the position of a group of people who are already predisposed to enjoying anthropomorphic animals, other concepts such as homosexuality... seem somewhat mundane and unimportant by comparison."<ref name="rust"/>

Others guess that gays are not over-represented, but that they are simply much more likely to be open about their sexual orientation among their fellow fans than they are in other areas of their life.{{fact}}
One other theory is that the demographics of the fandom is reasonably close to the general population. It just happens that people who become furries, a [[Wikipedia:Coming out|'coming out']] of sorts, become more exposed to alternate lifestyles and may reconsider their own sexuality, which might result in a paralell [[Wikipedia:Coming out|'coming out']].{{fact}}

'''Amy Rose''', previously known as '''Rosy the Rascal''', is a pink [[hedgehog]] from the [[Sonic the Hedgehog|''Sonic the Hedgehog'' video games]] released by Sega. She has chased [[Sonic]] for over a decade and has been trying to gain his heart in everything from animated TV shows to comics and games. Like Sonic and Tails, she has her own sidekick [[Cream the Rabbit]]

== Appearances ==
=== Original appearance ===
Amy first appeared in the ''Sonic the Hedgehog manga'' published in 1992, as the girlfriend of Sonic, in a design very similar to Nintendo's Princess Peach. After that appearance, Sega took the character, and Kazayuki Hoshino redesigned her for ''Sonic CD'' in 1993.

=== Game Appearances ===
In her first game appearance, ''Sonic CD'' (1993), Amy was introduced and kidnapped by Metal Sonic, but was rescued when Sonic challenged him to a race to save her.

Amy has also appeared in most of the other Sonic games, such as ''Sonic Drift'', ''Sonic Drift 2'', ''Sonic the Fighters'', ''Sonic R'', ''Sonic Adventure'', ''Sonic Shuffle'', ''Sonic Adventure 2'', ''Sonic Advance'', ''Sonic Advance 2'', ''Sonic Advance 3'', ''Sonic Heroes'', ''Shadow the Hedgehog''and ''Sonic Riders''.

=== Sonic X ===
Amy is one of the main characters in ''[[Sonic X]]'', an [[anime]] series which is the latest of the [[Sonic the Hedgehog]] cartoons. In Sonic X, Amy is Sonic's self proclaimed girlfriend, although her long-term goal is to get him to notice her. Despite his annoyance at her antics, Sonic's feelings are still unclear about her. In some translations, he has given her flowers to telling her he loves her.

=== Archie Comics ===
In the Archie Comics, Amy is the youngest member of the Freedom Fighters, and has a crush on Sonic that he tends to ignore. Amy is the cousin of [[Wikipedia:Minor characters in Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie)#Rob O' the Hedge|Rob O' the Hedge]] (a thinly veiled homage to Robin Hood), who sends her to live with Sonic, where she falls head over heels for Sonic, but remains distant out of respect for [[Sally Acorn]].

==Relationships==
===Sonic===
The love of Amy's life is Sonic the Hedgehog. Ever since Sonic rescued her in Sonic CD, she has fallen in love with him and been trying to win his heart. Only in the Sonic manga is it clear that she's succeeded in this, because it states she was his girlfriend. However, if Sonic wasn't so busy saving the world, they likely would be much closer.<ref name="offical_profile">Sega.com, [http://www.sega.com/sonic/globalsonic/post_allabout.php?article=soniccharacters Amy's Profile at Sonic Central]. URL Accessed March 23, 2006</ref>

===Cream===
[[Cream the Rabbit|Cream]] has been Amy's sidekick practically every time they appear together. They first teamed up in ''Sonic Advance 3'' as ''Team Jubilee'' and played a largely equivalent role to Sonic and Tails' ''Unbreakable Bond''. This has been backed up by their friendship in ''Sonic X''. They also seem be together in many other games, like ''Sonic Heroes'', ''Sonic Battle'', and ''Shadow the Hedgehog''.

==Voice actors==
*In ''Sonic X'' and the games beginning with ''Shadow the Hedgehog'', she is voiced by Lisa Orti.
* Previously, she was voiced by Jennifer Douillard for the ''Sonic Adventure'' games and Sonic Heroes.
* Her Japanese voice actor is Taeko Kawata.
Blaze has assumed many roles in his lifetime in such games as [[DragonSpires]], [[Furcadia]], and [[Tapestries]]; however, it seems that no matter what scene he's in, Blaze will always be a [[wikipedia:Lawful evil|lawful evil]], sexual deviant who views himself as a merciful crusader of the people.
Blaze's [[fursuit]] was created by [[MixedCandy]] and debuted at [[Further Confusion 2007]]. Because Blaze sees the world as inhabited by both humans and anthros, he sees your average [[furry]] as nothing more than a [[fanboy]] or [[anthro]] wannabe. In suit, Blaze is cynical towards these [[furries]], but treats other [[fursuiters]] as normal everyday anthros. He is particularly insulting to furries who wear ears/[[tail]]s.

[[Image:Elven Star Rainbow.jpg|right|thumb|The Elven Star, a symbol of otherkin. [http://www.our-elysium.com/otherkin.htm Source]]]'''Otherkin''' are those who believe that their physical forms do not define or fully encompass their mental states, personality, psychology, or [[spirituality|spiritual]] nature.

The term predates its use on the Internet, and is believed to have been coined in the late 1980's by those who felt an affinity or connection to the ''fae folk'' and/or ''[[Wikipedia:elf|elves]]'' of traditional mythological culture and folklore. First appearing in use on the Internet in the mid-1990s, the word was intended to imply some form of kinship with an 'other' element outside of a person's biological nature, physical mind and experiences, and [[human]] life.

==Otherkin beliefs==

Otherkin feel they have a sympathetic connection, affinity, or some other form of relation with another animal or being. Traditionally these have been mythological in nature, beginning with fairy and fey folk, elves, and a few other European mythological archetypes. Later, associations with other creatures became common, including [[unicorn]]s, [[gryphon]]s, [[dragon]]s, angelics, and [[demon]]s; as well as "non-living" types such as golems and other inorganics. In time, some people also began to describe concepts for beings which were derived from mythological archetypes, though having unique qualities; fully undefinable or one-of-a-kind kin types appeared as well.

With the unusual nature of the basic otherkin premises, there has been skepticism directed at it along with the proposal that many people adopt the otherkin identity to justify social difficulties - the outcast syndrome - or because they have a delusion and are in denial about their biological humanity. The idea that otherkin believe they are physically non-human in a spectacular way - such as actually being biological dragons - is seen as a pervasive misunderstanding by otherkin themselves, who point out the spiritual and psychological focus of the concept. Some community members believe this confusion arises from those unfamiliar with the concept or having only a sketchy or distorted awareness; comparing it to psychiatric cases such as [[lycanthropy]] and dissociative identity disorder, and concluding that in order for someone to state that they identify as an elf or gryphon, they must be experiencing a form of hallucination or delusion.

Contrary to [[stereotype]]s which have been perpetuated, most who identify as otherkin are fully aware of their biology and human existence. Many otherkin do have particular spiritual and metaphysical beliefs, and as part of those beliefs have discussed elements of a proposed spiritual reality which is not to be confused with the material world. Even if a given person believes, for instance, that on a spiritual plane they may have wings, it is uncommon that they are making a claim about such things that is scientific in nature, or that they exist in what most people might consider the real world.

Despite these points, some dislike the otherkin concept on the grounds that they feel it is abused by individuals who wish to present themselves as special and unique without merit, and that making unverifiable spiritual claims is one way to achieve this. Over time, otherkin has proven to be appealing to a number of people for this reason, and those within the community can be rigorous about screening out 'me too' and 'fluffbunny' adopters of the otherkin moniker. Some otherkin themselves do not consider the Internet Kin community to have much or any validity, saying that it is easy and tempting for a person to claim almost anything within the realm of online anonymity.

Within the loosely defined otherkin community, online or off, there is no consensus as to just what makes a person otherkin. A variety of phenomena have been observed and theorized about which many feel create some sort of affinity between a person and something else. In this light, some see otherkin as related to concepts such as [[Wikipedia:Totemism|Totemism]], which have appeared in human culture since ancient times. There has also been some debate over how potential factors such as [[Wikipedia:Clinical lycanthropy|clinical lycanthropy]] may account for a percentage of the experiences otherkin believe they have had. While many, and some conjecture most, otherkin follow a paradigm of spiritual reincarnation in some form to help explain their state of being, not all otherkin share this, and may view themselves in other spiritual, philosophical, or psychological frameworks. Even among those who believe in reincarnation, there are a wide variety of interpretations.

Another viewpoint is that the term otherkin largely denotes a social network and should not, or can not, be used as a description for individual spiritual beliefs or to describe an particular theory or explanation for phenomenon. Many people use the otherkin community to find discussion for a variety of subjects and to compare subjective experiences without considering themselves to be otherkin in a descriptive sense.

==History of the community==

Although there are spiritual parallels with shamanism and totemism, the modern otherkin subculture appears to trace its roots back to the counterculture of the 1960s. [[Wikipedia:Hippie|Hippies]] and [[Wikipedia:Flower child|flower children]], in particular, were heavily influenced by the fantasy works of [[Wikipedia:J.R.R. Tolkien|J.R.R. Tolkien]].<ref>[http://lists.econ.utah.edu/pipermail/marxism/2004-April/006893.html Tolkien and radical ecology in the sixties] - Mailing list marxism@lists.econ.utah.edu (accessed April 21 2004).</ref>

One example of this influence was the rock band [[Wikipedia:Tyrannosaurus Rex|Tyrannosaurus Rex]], whose drummer took the name [[Wikipedia:Steve Peregrin Took|Steve Peregrin Took]], after a [[Wikipedia:hobbit|hobbit]] character from ''[[Wikipedia:The Lord of the Rings|The Lord of the Rings]]''. The short-lived magazine ''[[Wikipedia:Gandalf's Garden|Gandalf's Garden]]'', named after another Tolkien character, described the group's singer-songwriter [[Wikipedia:Marc Bolan|Marc Bolan]] as "of elfin descent".<ref>[http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Studio/4730/gandalf.htm Tyrannosaurus Rex] - ''Gandalf's Garden'' (July 1968)</ref> Bolan was also frequently referred to as "the Bopping Elf".<ref>[http://www.marc-bolan.com/public/biography2.htm "From Darling Of The Underground To Dandy In The Underworld" - A Brief Bolan Biography], The Official Marc Bolan Fan Club (accessed May 8 2005)</ref>

Another musician of the time who used similar fantasy imagery was Donovan. In the cover notes to his 1966 LP [[Wikipedia:Sunshine Superman|"Sunshine Superman"]], he wrote "starring mr. plod in action with a daughter of the evil land of mordor."<ref>[http://www.sabotage.demon.co.uk/donovan/writings.htm#part_one Sunshine Superman] - Donovan's Non-Poetic Writings (1966)</ref> In the cover notes to his 1967 LP [[Wikipedia:A Gift from a Flower to a Garden|"A Gift from a Flower to a Garden"]], he wrote "We shall fill their days with fairies and elves and pussys and paints, with laughter and song and the gentle influence of Mother Nature."<ref>[http://www.sabotage.demon.co.uk/donovan/writings.htm#Oh,_what_a_Dawn_Youth_is_Rising_to A Gift from a Flower to a Garden] - Donovan's Non-Poetic Writings (1967)</ref>
And in the underground publication ''[[Wikipedia:International Times|International Times]]'', better known as IT, John Peel advised readers to "go to the children's playground in Kensington Gardens and stare at the elves on the trees there".<ref>[http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/10/27/db2701.xml Obituary: John Peel] - Daily Telegraph (27 October 2004)</ref>
That was one of the first to use the image of earth as a physical Goddess."<ref>[http://groups.google.co.uk/group/alt.religion.all-worlds/msg/89f26a9ce27ab423?dmode=source&hl=en Aeona Silversong Interview] - The Electronic Foghorn (June 15 1993)</ref>

According to the Silver Elves, the Elf Queen's Daughters had ''"given up the path to elfin"'' around 1977. However, in 2004 they wrote that they had recently encountered one of them, Loriel Lyndoreyn.<ref>[http://www.renaissancefestival.com/community/discussion/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=875 magic connects us] - magical elven love letters (accessed May 21 2004).</ref> Another former member, Aeona Silversong, became a priestess in the Church of All Worlds in 1993, while continuing to identify as an elf.<ref>[http://web.archive.org/web/20040407120835/http://www.caw.org/clergy/index.html CAW Clergy] - CAWeb (accessed February 23 2004).</ref><ref>[http://groups.google.co.uk/group/alt.religion.all-worlds/msg/89f26a9ce27ab423?dmode=source&hl=en Aeona Silversong Interview] - The Electronic Foghorn (June 15 1993)</ref> Furthermore, Circle Network News published an article on the seven-pointed elven star citing the group as late as 1986. The Silver Elves suggest that the Elf Queen's Daughters were adept with magic and the use of the Ouija board.<ref>[http://www.sonic.net/~elves/necromancer.html The Way of the Necromancer] - The Elven Tree of Life (May 4 2002).</ref>

The Silver Elves are one of the more prominent groups in the modern subculture, mainly because of the Magical Elven Love Letters which they have regularly published for over twenty years. In their published compilation of these letters, they write that at the time they began to write them in 1979, ''"it had been nearly two years since the Elf Queen's Daughters had forsaken the dharma of the magic letters"''. This would indicate that the letters of the Silver Elves are a direct descendant of the newsletters released by the Elf Queen's Daughters; furthermore, the Silver Elves themselves profess to have been awakened as elves by that group.

Until the Internet became accessible, the letters were sent out by post and further distributed by their recipients, as well as being printed in various newsletters and magazines. Contact details for the Silver Elves were also listed in pagan books, such as [[Wikipedia:Margot Adler|Margot Adler]]'s ''[[Wikipedia:Drawing Down the Moon (book)|"Drawing Down The Moon"]]'' in 1979 and [[Wikipedia:Laurie Cabot|Laurie Cabot]]'s ''"Power of the Witch"'' in 1989.<ref>Adler, Margot, ''Drawing Down The Moon: Druids, Goddess-worshippers and other pagans in America today'', ISBN 0670283428, Viking Press (1979)</ref><ref>Cabot, Laurie, ''Power of the Witch'', ISBN 0385297866, Delacorte Press (1989).</ref>

In 1990, R'ykandar Korra'ti founded the Elfinkind Digest, an e-mail-based mailing list for "elves and interested observers".[http://groups.google.co.uk/group/rec.games.frp/msg/834976939ac48fcc?dmode=source&hl=en] At the time, her signature on Usenet was "Elfinkind Unite!" The next year, in 1991, she posted a subdued announcement to several newsgroups publicizing the Digest for the first time.<ref>[http://groups.google.co.uk/group/rec.games.frp/msg/834976939ac48fcc?dmode=source&hl=en Small mail-based digest] - Usenet (September 26 1991).</ref> As of 2003, more than 2000 digests had been posted, and this otherkin mailing list is generally acknowledged as the first one.[http://www.murkworks.net/~elflist/]

While Korra'ti had expected to find only other elves through her mailing list, she in fact discovered people with ''"a large number of self-identifications."''<ref>[http://www.rialian.com/elfinkin.htm Elfinkind Digest] - Elven Realities (December 23 1996).</ref> This was one of the first indications that there were other [[species]] identifications out there besides those of elves, and this dichotomy persists to this day in the name of one of the more popular otherkin mailing lists, elven-realities.

On 6 February 1995, the [http://groups.google.co.uk/group/alt.magick/msg/e5adba21569abd19?dmode=source&hl=en Elven Nation Manifesto] was posted to Usenet.<ref>[http://groups.google.co.uk/group/alt.magick/msg/e5adba21569abd19?dmode=source&hl=en The Elven Nation Manifesto.....everyone must read this!] - Usenet (February 6 1995).</ref> This document was interesting in several ways: firstly, although it included a real name and a postal address, as well as a partial email address, it was posted through the anonymous remailer at anon.penet.fi. Secondly, several of the common themes in the modern otherkin movement are visible in it, such as the concept that elves have something significant to contribute to the world, and mention of the "Veil to the Otherworld", or the invisible boundary between the real world and the magical world of faerie.

Since it was posted to eleven newsgroups, it also violated Usenet's crossposting etiquette, which was far more strictly observed at the time than it is today. On Usenet itself, the document was universally panned and considered to be either a troll or an attempt to frame an innocent party. However, enough people contacted the original author of the Elven Nation post in good faith for a [http://www.rialian.com/elvsnatn.htm mailing list] to spin off from it.<ref>[http://www.rialian.com/elvsnatn.htm Excerpts from the Elven Nation mailing list] - Elven Realities (accessed May 4 2005).</ref> At least one person considered it to have played a part in their awakening.<ref>[http://web.archive.org/web/19991009032307/www.absinthia.com/otherkin/awakening/willow.html Willow] - Awakenings (October 9 1999).</ref>

The community first hit the headlines in 2001 when the Village Voice published an article on it. Entitled "Elven Like Me", it drew gentle comparisons with the antiglobalisation movement, and suggested that otherkin were antimodernist.<ref>[http://www.villagevoice.com/news/0107,mamatas,22273,8.html Elven Like Me] - Village Voice (14 February 2001)</ref>

==Otherkin in the media==

The otherkin phenomenon has experienced less exposure in general media than subculture venues such as furry fandom, although it has been noted with increasing frequency in [[Wikipedia:Neo-Paganism|Neo-Pagan]] culture due to crossover of shamanistic and spiritual elements that has brought otherkin to the attention of contemporary pagans.

To date, there has been little formal study or publication of culture and theory relating to otherkin. One of the first reference volumes to deal with the otherkin culture specifically, ''A Field Guide to Otherkin'', by Lupa, was released in April 2007. The book contains the results of surveys distributed throughout the otherkin and therianthropy communities by the author and volunteers.

==Otherkin and therianthropy==

Otherkin bears no small resemblance to [[therianthropy]], and some people consider them the same thing and use them interchangeably. Of these, some might feel there is insufficient difference between the concepts to present them separately, while others might be outsiders who are not familiar with the nuances or history of the ideas and communities surrounding them. However, in tradition to date, otherkin has come to be associated with people who experience an affinity with an animal, creature, or being which might ordinarily be considered mythological, or sometimes entirely unique/alien. In contrast, therianthropy is heavily connected to the affinity for ''existing'', real-world animals which have been observed to live today in nature or to have lived in the past. Typically, someone who identifies with fairies, elves, dragons, gryphons, unicorns, or even angelic or demonic beings might be seen as otherkin. While one who identifies with [[wolves]], [[foxes]], [[bear]]s, [[cat]]s big and small, or [[otter]]s might be seen as a therianthrope.

In some cases, a specific person might consider themselves - if they use a formal term or subculture association at all - a member of either community in spite of their species/entity connection. For example, someone who feels they are a part of the general otherkin community socially might use the term therianthropy to describe the mechanics of their own nature.

==Otherkin and furry fandom==

[[Furry fan]]s appear to be generally aware of otherkin and therianthropy. The practices and viewpoints of many [[furry lifestyle]]rs have some similarity to these ideas; because of this, some lifestylers associate with one or both terms. Likewise, while [[furry fandom]] in general might not have been formed to explore spiritual connections with animals and other creatures, many otherkin and therianthropes find the content and subject matter of furry appealing because of their own interests. In the opposite direction, many [[furry fan]]s discover the otherkin community through the fandom and begin to take part in it as well.

A noticeable number of people within the otherkin community are also furry fans in some capacity and frequently attend events such as furry [[convention]]s in addition to otherkin-specific social events. The philosophy and spirituality tracks at some conventions have hosted otherkin and therian speakers. Panels and discussions on mythology have also attracted otherkin to participate. Otherkin who are artists have used furry conventions to display their work, and those with an interest in make-up and costuming have attended for masquerade contests and dances.

Some otherkin feel that the furry fandom is a more relaxed atmosphere in which to explore ideas of animal and human relations and hybrids, seeing the fandom's lack of core spiritual doctrines as neutral ground. Due to this, some people decide to leave the general otherkin and therian communities in favor of furry. Furry events are sometimes popular as a meeting place with otherkin who are geographically isolated from kin-specific events.

===Controversy within furry fandom===

Opinions vary as to whether or not their association with the fandom is positive, negative, or irrelevant. Some people find the association of furry with things beyond its base definition of the appreciation of [[anthropomorphic]] animals in art and fiction to be inappropriate, ridiculous, or uncomfortable. Because of this, otherkin and therian connections or intermingling with the fandom have taken on a pejorative tint for such people. Much as furry lifestylers are sometimes disliked, otherkin might be made to feel unwelcome or derided by some furry fans.

A large degree of fandom awareness has been spread not only by contact with otherkin within the fandom, but by the adoption of otherkin as another topic with which to portray elements of Furry in humorous or negative light by websites such as [[Something Awful]] and [[Crush! Yiff! Destroy!]]. Due to such framing, otherkin has for some people become a generic term to identify furries who feel there is something more to their animal avatar than [[role-playing]]. Some also point out that a good deal of otherkin awareness has been spread by sardonic humor, which often singles out individuals with the most outrageous behavior or controversial opinions. As a result there appear to be inaccuracies in the knowledge of many furry fans and nonfurs relating to more moderate members of the otherkin community.

In response, others have said in spite of this confusion, there are those who identify as otherkin while putting forth dubious claims and questionable behavior. Because of the effect of visibility from the crowd, it is often the most over-the-top examples that are seen by outsiders, and thus tend to be associated with the entire fandom, not unlike many of the other problems with publicity that furry fandom has endured over time.

==Outside otherkin==

Otherkin is a label to describe personal beliefs, experiences, and traits that occur in a variety of combinations depending on the individual. As there is no consensus on what qualifies as otherkin, not everyone who shares similar beliefs feels the term is appropriate or useful for themselves.

Some who might otherwise describe themselves as otherkin downplay or conceal the affiliation. Citing outbreaks of controversy, individuals have confessed reluctance to reveal the extent of their beliefs for fear of losing status or being ostracized by a particular community, to avoid employment difficulties, or relieve pressure from friends and family.
'''Saph''' (born January 30th, 1986)<ref>[http://saphykitten.livejournal.com/profile Saph's Profile] on [[LiveJournal]]. Retrieved November 20th, 2007</ref> is a [[furry]] who lives in [[Wikipedia:Portland, Oregon|Portland, Oregon]], United States. He goes by the names '''Saphron''' and '''Saphy''' and does not like to be called "Saph".

Saph's [[fursona]] is a cream-coloured [[panther]], usually [[wing]]ed with the shimmer of scales on his underside. He stands roughly 6' tall, and 190lbs, and wears a pair of Violet tinted glasses.

==History==
[[Image:Saph-1-.jpg|right|thumb|200px]]
From the ages of sixteen to nineteen, Saph identified himself as furry in public, as well as on the internet. In early 2005, going through an identity crisis, Saph renounced his furdom and proceeded to live a fast-paced life of drinking, exotic dancing, and the occassional party.

Throughout that time he ignored his furry alter-ego, but in 2007 Saph began to show his furry side again, and began to socialize with other like-minded people.

[[Image:furcsaph1.jpg|right|thumb|200px]]
He is in [[Furcadia]]. There, he is racist, vulgar, and offensive to all five senses. In person, Saph has a very powerful personality, and is very outgoing. He cares nothing for the oppinion of others, as he feels supperior to them on a regular basis.

== Controversy ==
Saph has in the past stirred up a little bit of trouble in the community, mostly limited to the onlne game of Furcadia. Durring his earlier years, Saph ran the first chartered dream to have a gay theme to it, in the area of Furrabian Nights. After a breif encounter with people of lesser inteligence, it became obvious that competition was required in order to keep a healthy consumer base. With the advent of many other themed areas, Saphs dream eventually died out when his personal life picked up, and he lost interest in the furre community. Saph now frequents his successor state, the Gay Forest Inn, for a little bit of drama and mayhem. His previous dream, the Gay Isle, now sits abandoned on the outskirts, ran by former associate Ambrose Ignatious.

==Real Life==
Saph frequents the night life of Portland, Oregon. Currently working as a Support Supervisor in an office on the outskirts of Portland, his hobbies include Dungeons and Dragons, Live action theater, Stage performaces, makeup art, and writing. He holds significant knollege in the feilds of european history, and historical politics, and speaks three languages which are Russian, French, and English.

Simba B:

'''Fursecution''' is a word coined in the late 1990s that has come to mean either the perceived persecution of [[furries]] from elements outside the fandom, or as a derisive term by [[anti-furries]] to any fur's reaction (or overreaction) to an attack by said outside elements.

==Fursecution's meaning==
A greatly debated subject, with some claiming it to be a legitimate form of discrimination, while others find it a severe overreaction, this term may have originated from the mockery generated by sites like [[Something Awful]], which is often targeted at the [[furry fandom]]. The primary reason for these disagreements is the fact that the term is applied to situations both serious and trivial, predominantly the latter.

It has been suggested<ref>[http://xydexx.livejournal.com/583464.html?thread=4333352#t4333352 Xydexx's suggestion about the origin of the word]</ref> that this word was conceived by members of [[Crush Yiff Destroy]], but use of the term was documented in [[Usenet]] posts as far back as 1998<ref>[http://groups.google.com/group/rec.music.dylan/browse_frm/thread/5569b2c96e682e0/11bffd743b8334d1?lnk=st&q=&rnum=15&hl=en#11bffd743b8334d1 Earliest known use of the word in a Usenet post dated Oct 26, 1998]</ref>.

==Term "validity"==
It can be argued that a large amount of the perceived "fursecution" could be due to certain people's oversensitivity to criticism about the furry fandom (such as claims that many furries may be homosexual or bisexual, or furs are in just for the sexual aspects of the culture.) [[Encyclopædia Dramatica]], which pokes fun at various internet phenomena, especially furries, says, "Furries suffer from an acute victim complex. This makes them very easy to torment."

In other words, while any group that is at least relatively well-known will inevitably draw criticism or mockery, the (oversensitive) reaction (or overreaction) by some individuals to such attacks is what they would claim qualifies as being "Fursecuted."

==Anti-furry "fursecution"==

By 2005, anti-furry groups or people had added alternative meanings to the word:

* Either as it being one signifying an actual "attack" by anti-furry elements on a furry person, group or site for the sole purpose to, hopefully, generate furry [[drama]].

* Or, as a mocking term towards a furry person, group or site when a situation or event is unfavorable or detrimental towards them<ref>[http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia%3ADeletion_review%2FLog%2F2007_June_5&diff=136209598&oldid=136209578 A call to delete a furry category on [[Wikipedia]] is mocked by a Encyclopedia Dramatica editor ("Fursecution!!!111")]</ref>

'''The Werewolf''' has been around the [[furry fandom]] for since before there was a formal furry fandom. His drawings, sketches and fiction, mostly of an [[furotica|furotic]] nature, have been circulating for years, although he denies being an [[artist]].

As he notes, the comment he most often gets is "Your art was some of the first furry art I ever saw..." usually in a tone one reserves for someone discovered to not actually be dead.

He has been on the forefront of various media and styles and was one of the first [[furry artist]]s to do furry [[photomorph]]s (first image dating back to the late 1980s) and may have been one of the first furry artists to draw [[male]] furs with [[penis|sheath]]s and animal-style [[genitals]] rather then [[human]]-style.

His [[fursona]] is a [[folf|wolf-fox]].

The Werewolf lives in [[Wikipedia:Canada|Canada]] and doesn't go to many cons.
