Ryshili:

wikify
context
Transgender is an umbrella term referring to individuals who's gender identities do not match their birth sex. This includes both binary (male or female) and non-binary identifications.

While the term "transgender" is often conflated with transsexuality, not all transgendered individuals identify as transsexual (because of negative connotations of "sexual" in the name which denates that it is about sex or is a sexuality, when in fact, it is a gender).

Also note "transvestite" is not the same as a "transgender".

Transgenderism
Transgenderism is when an individual's gender identity strongly conflicts with their biological sex. In most cases, a transgender individual strongly identifies as a member of the other sex and wishes to transition socially, legally, and/or medically. However, there are same who wish to be genderqueer or neuter/genderneutral.

Transgender individuals may chose to change their sex medically/surgically.. This process, known as transition, is heavily monitored by medical and psychiatric professionals. Methods of transition include hormone injections and/or genital surgery. Many female-to-male transsexuals may chose to have a double mastectomy performed to remove their breasts; male-to-female transsexuals may undergo breast augmentation. There are also lower surgery for the construction of reproductive organs (albeit sterile).

Restrictions on changes to legal documentation such as birth certificates or drivers licenses vary from area to area, though many require some form of surgical transition. In some states,unfortunately, transition is not recognized and there is no way for a transgender individual to amend their legal documentation.

Transgenderism/Transsexuality and furry
It is not uncommon to find furries who are transgender or transsexual, also known transfurries, or those who have create fursonas of the opposite sex for transgender roleplay. According to Pounced.org, 1 in 62 furs considers themselves transgendered, as compared to about 1 in 1000 for the United States as a whole. This may be as high as 1 in 10 when the group is limited to lifestylers.fact

It is important to realize that during TinySex, though one may roleplay with a character of the opposite sex of one's own character, the actual person behind that character may in fact be of the same sex. This, in and of itself, does not make one transgendered (or homosexual).

See also
* Transgender on Wikipedia (A more political explaination)
* Furry Grrls
* Transfurry
* Shemale (derogatory)
* Hermaphrodite
* Transmale

External links
* Furry Grrls, a Livejournal community for trans-furries
* Transfurry, another Livejournal community catering to transsexual and transgendered furries

term-stub

nl:Transgender
