Scalie

2022-08-04T17:05:45Z

ProfessorDoctorUnimpressive: Note: The Usenet posts all say "scalie" and not "scaly" because I don't feel like scrolling through the 60,000 search results that "scaly" brings up. Sorry if the references are bad in some way.

unref
Scalies (singular: scaly/scalie) is a furspeech term used to describe both anthropomorphic creatures of the reptile and amphibian variety, and furries that identify themselves as such or prefer the concept of such beings over furred characters. It is also a self-moniker for the users of alt.fan.dragons, a Usenet discussion group for all things draconid.cn

Origin
The term scaly existed before its usage as a furspeech term, being used to describe animals or other entities with scales. It is made from the adjective-making suffix -y, which can give a subject the quality of a root, and the root scale. The usage of scalie as a term for anthropomorphic reptiles and their fans started sometime in or before the year 1997, as Usenet posts from the year 1997 show usage of the word to describe fans of reptilian characters.
Description
As creations, scaly characters tend to have a coating of scales much like the animals they represent. However, some scalies, such as amphibians, lack scales, instead having bare and/moist skin, and some others, like some dragons and (very few) dinosaurs, have very light or no true scales, but a fleshy hide similar to the skin of a human (in the case of dinosaurs, feathers are also common).

Media
Some well known scaly artists include AmberScale, Fossil, Chris Sawyer, Lizardbeth, Kaa Bakensobek and Yusky, Richi aka Vitheo among others.

Shark

2022-05-25T17:31:56Z

ProfessorDoctorUnimpressive: While this isn't comprehensive yet, it is better than it was before.

unref

Sharks include many species of cartilaginous fishes. They belong to the class Chondrichthyes, which also includes rays and skates. Sharks are among the most feared predators on Earth, frequently referred towho as 'mindless killing machines'. They have been featured in movies like Jaws, Deep Blue Sea and Open Water. Shark faces lack expression, and they can't be petted. Brushing up against that sand-paper skin, with its minute dermal denticles, results in a rug-burn.

Sharks are swift, strong, silent and very well adapted to their lifestyle, remaining unchanged since the time of the dinosaurs. Shamanism attributes the shark with many fine qualities, including remorselessness and shapeshifting. They take the role of protector and savior. Sharks are gods of the sea and guardians of family, with the ability to move constantly, a connection to past knowledge, the ability to defend themselves and to never be caught off guard.

Kamohoali'i was the king shark god of Oahu and the elder brother of Pele. Each island of Hawaii has their own shark god, and many families have personal shark guardians, or aumakuas

Anthropomorphization
The apparent lack of distinct limbs on a shark can make it hard for some to imagine an anthropomorphic shark character. However, many still manage to overcome this limitation by giving their anthropomorphic shark characters limbs anyway. Anthropomorphic shark characters are also often given distinct, elongated snouts (like those of anthropomorphic caniforms or dragons), possibly to emphasize their jaws or to replicate the head shape of a non-anthropomorphic shark. Speaking of jaws, anthropomorphic sharks may sometimes have very sharp teeth, kind of like their non-anthropomorphic counterparts. Anthropomorphic shark tails can vary, but many sharks have large caudal fins on the end of their tail. Sometimes, anthropomorphic sharks will have additional fins on their tails before the terminal caudal fin. In truth, anthropomorphic sharks can have fins in many places, including the back of their head, their limbs, and their back.

While sharks may be an uncommon choice for fursonas or other characters compared to species such as cats, they are still rather popular. For example, some furries (or you) may recognize the character Mayhem and their music, made and released by Emma Essex or Halley Labs/LapFox Trax. The once-a-year week-long television sensation Shark Week often gives many furries a chance to show off shark characters or the idea to turn pre-existing non-shark characters into sharks.
Species
*The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) or white pointer is one of the most popular/famous species of sharks, likely due to its decently high number of recorded biting incidents (As of 2012, 272 in total) and its usage in the previously mentioned Jaws series. It is found in many bodies of water near the equator, but it can still be found in more northern and southern waters as well. Its famed predatorial behavior makes it a popular candidate for anthropomorphization.
**While the great white shark is by far the most famous lamniform/mackerel shark, it is not the only one present in furry communities. The goblin shark (Mitsukurina owstoni) is notable for its almost horn-like elongated snout and its extensible jaws, possibly making it a stand-out character from other kinds of sharks, anthropomorphic or not. The shortfin and longfin mako sharks (Isurus oxyrinchus and paucus respectively), or blue pointers, are rather similar to the great white in body shape, but show a more vivid blue in their coloration.
*The great hammerhead shark (Sphyrna mokarran) is found in all tropical waters, in both the open ocean and costal areas. Normally 12 to 18 feet in length, these sharks are easily recognized by their strange, 'hammer' shaped heads. These are used as an advanced electroreceptory organ and for rapid turns. The hammerhead's usual hunting behavior is to slide just above the seabed and detect living prey underneath much like a metal detector. Modern research suggests that the 'hammer' may have been a spontaneous mutation, since the basal species has the largest hammer of all. Additionally, unlike other species of hammerhead in family Sphyrnidae, the great hammerhead is solitary and dangerous to humans. They feed on rays, smaller sharks and many species of bony fishes.
**Great hammerhead shark is one of the three hammerhead shark species suggested for Rokea characters (weresharks of World of Darkness RPG). They get a bonus on sight-based rolls and Social rolls with other Rokea (the system grants this bonus to all hammerhead species).
