===2005===

With the recent revelation, Quentyn uses fire to kill several Wights and drive out the rest. With the Millfolk's arrival, and the realization that the rats were real, they retreat to the Dining Hall.

Using the book as a resource, Quentyn figures out how to destroy the Wights. Because they sense and feed on Lux, he has to be the one to go since he's the weakest mage there. Using Squidge as a guide, Quentyn travels down into the sewer and finds a door to the lab of one Rosad Athair Beither, the "evilest Rac Conan ever" - a monster hunter turned mad scientist who lived centuries ago.

After sending Squidge back with a message, Quentyn goes in alone and discovers a Rat King, five rats bound together by their tails. They are the source and controller of the Wights. They create more Wights and trap Quentyn. His body would provide sufficient food to allow the Rat King to produce enough shadow rats to overrun the city.

In a last ditch effort, Quentyn heroically hurls himself through the Wights massed in front of him, and though bleeding profusely, manages to kill the Rat King and destroy the Wights.

He nearly dies from blood loss and injuries. He has a near death experience in which he comes before Yeshua and believes himself a sinner who threw his life away. Yeshua believes otherwise but tells Quentyn that it is not his time. The White Stag licks Quentyn and he wakes up to find Squidge biting him in order to make him stay awake and seek help.

Quentyn finds a ladder up to the surface and collapses before a patrol. He's taken to the hospital where everyone piles in to see him when he wakes up: Nessie, Emmett, the Millfolks, his parents, and a guardsman.

Nessie, it turns out, was the one who found Quentyn. Her Kenning abilities alerted her to the Wights and to where Quentyn was. Speaking to Quentyn and Emmet alone, the guard informs Quentyn that the Council and the Guard want Quentyn to play down what Quentyn saw in the lab.

Quentyn and Emmet are told that Rosad Beither had disciples, and that the Council didn't want to risk a panic by revealing that. Emmet and Quentyn are unhappy and think that lying to the people is wrong, but have not disputed the official story put out about the Wights. At least not yet.

Quentyn also confronts the Millfolks about the doctor who advised Lady Millfolk not to go to Colin, and gives his own advice to the Millfolks, earning the ire of Lady Millfolks' mother-in-law. Colin's Night Terrors are cured, the Brownies return and adopt Quentyn into their tribe. Then Quentyn gets news about his sword.

The sword may have the most unique Lux pattern in the world, and it contains eight new runes. He learns that it is indeed bonded to him until the day he dies, so that only he can use it. While he can't control what it does, he can remove the Sales Pitch Spell by naming the sword. He appropriately names it Wildcard.

We also learn from Kestrel that her and Quentyn's friend '''Fen''' is obsessed with trying to catch a Fae song by sitting in a Fae Rath (Fairy Ring).

Quentyn prepares to return home. However, as he's buying a ticket back, his pack, in which he has stowed Wildcard, is stolen from him. The thief gets away with Quentyn's most prized possession. The thief, who wore a purple scarf, did so as an initiation to a gang called the Royals, all of their members wear purple. The thief is accepted when Wildcard is handed over.

Quentyn agonizes over what to do and finally decides to go "undercover" to get his sword back. Squidge, who stowed away in his money pouch, helps Quentyn get in touch with the Brownies, who agree to help him look for the sword.

As they're doing this, Quentyn first sends a message to his parents saying that his homecoming will be delayed; he then goes into a tavern in order to find information about the gang that robbed him.

During a chess game, he learns that the Royals, whose color matches that of the scarf that the thief wore, run the high alleys; he goes there in order to spy on them. His early attempts end up landing him in jail until Squidge pays bail. Quentyn is no closer to the Royals.

He instead chooses to spy on them from above which presents different troubles, including angry citizens with guns and crashing through the roof of someone's home, once again landing him in jail. He pays bail again, but this time is informed by the officer who arrested him both times, one Officer Mulharney, that he'll be keeping a close eye on Quentyn.

Desperate and not thinking clearly due to the separation anxiety he feels over the loss of Wildcard, Quentyn abandons all pretense at subtlety and wanders from tavern to tavern in the Tumbledowns, asking about the Royals. In one such locale he gets an answer in the form of a rival gang: the Red Caps. They throw him out of the bar, thinking him a spy for their rivals.

They strip his shirt off him, hoping to verify this through whatever gang tattoos, brands, or marks he might had. That Quentyn has none proves that he is not a spy nor a member of any gang.

However the Red Caps decide that they don't like "no-names" any more than they do enemy gangs so they decide to "mess him up." Quentyn uses his glimmer rope (which he was wearing as a belt) in order to climb up a wall and escape, with the Red Caps in hot pursuit.

After a frantic chase through the Tumbledowns, Quentyn discovers the large wall that separates the Tumbledowns from the Good Neighborhoods and finds a small crack in it he can climb through. As he's crawling through the Red Caps catch up with him and attempt to pull him back in since they're too big to fit through and the wall's too high to climb. While they fail to keep hold of Quentyn, they do succeed in ripping his pants off, leaving Quentyn naked on the other side of the wall in a affluent gated community called Silvergate.

Quentyn sneaks into a large household having a party in the hopes of snatching something he can use for clothes. Meribeth, the barmaiden from Freeman Downs, is inside; her great aunt Rubey is hosting the gala. Quentyn, meanwhile, sneaks into a broom closet and in the process overhears a conversation regarding two men who may be behind the gang troubles in Sanctuary. However, an incoming servant cuts his listening short and he's forced to flee down a hall. Tripping over a mop, he finds himself on stage in front of everyone, still naked, and mistaken for a Bard.

Quentyn freaks out after seeing Meribeth in the crowd and throws a potted plant out the window, through which he escapes. He is then seen in prison. We hear that he was arrested after running from several guards, including two females. The Adjudicator dismisses the numerous charges against Quentyn--disturbing the peace, resisting arrest, public indecency, et al--as he thinks that Quentyn has suffered enough.

Quentyn is released and, once again clothed, pounds the streets of the Tumbledowns, furious at his humiliation and lack of success. He then stumbles upon a trio of Red Caps beating up a kit with a purple hat - the Royals' insignia. By a combination of skill and luck, he and Squidge knock out the Red Caps. When Quentyn tries to escape with the kit he is stopped by one of the guards (Mulharney again), and is so frustrated at being caught again that he kicks the guard in the groin.

Grateful for his rescue and amused at seeing the guard beaten up, the kit invites Quentyn back to the Royals' hideout where he can lie low for a while. Quentyn is amazed at his luck, but is less happy when the kit tells him to leave Squidge behind because the Royals' leader believes all small fae, or "grubbers" as he calls them, are spies for the guards.

Quentyn arrives at the Royals' hideout and is allowed to stay. A party is thrown when they hear of his injuring Mulharney and in the course of the party all of the Royals get either drunk or high and consequently fall asleep, allowing Quentyn to look for and ultimately find his sword. However, it is highly guarded by various Lux-powered wards. The kit Quentyn had rescued discovers him staring at his sword and admonishes him for such a risky move. The kit also reveals that he was the one who had stolen Wildcard from Quentyn.

Two days later, an unknown buyer appears. He demands that all grunt Royals leave the hideout, but Quentyn manages to sneak back in. The buyer notices the sword and the fact that it isn't properly warded, but gives up all apparent interest when the Royals leader, Viktor, claims it as a trophy. The exchange complete, the buyer leaves the hideout. A conversation between he and his partner implies that they are the two men who Quentyn overheard conspiring [http://npc.comicgenesis.com/d/20050805.html here.]

A Royal discovers Quentyn in his hiding place, who jumps through a hole in the floor and promptly sprains his ankle. He is captured and brought before Viktor. One of the females recognizes Quentyn as a Questor. Due to this, Viktor and the others decide to give Quentyn the beating of a lifetime, abandoning his battered body in a trashbin. Coincidentally, Squidge had been hiding in the bin. Quentyn vehemently swears to get his sword back.

After quite a bit of preparation, Quentyn lures the Redcaps straight into the Royals hideout, thus sparking a massive brawl. He subsequently uses some poppers to scare a couple of tree apes into demolishing the Royals hideout. As the gang members stumble out of the ruins, Quentyn activates another of his tricks, unleashing a tremendous charge of lux within a matter of seconds. This disables all lux-powered items within a hundred yards, including the wards and lux tappers surrounding Wildcard. The connection restored, Quentyn summons Wildcard back to his hand.

At that moment, the City Guard appears and takes everyone prisoner. Quentyn is released in a matter of hours, but not before a conversation with several of the higher-ups of Sanctuary City. All charges against Quentyn are dropped, much to the dismay of Mulharney. Just as the elders begin to formulate a grand conspiracy theory regarding the human coins found at the gang hideouts, Quentyn deflates the theory by pointing out that the coins are counterfeit.

As he is about to leave the police station, Squidge says that he managed to get someone from Freeman Downs to pay for his legal fees - Meribeth. Viktor, in a nearby cell, spouts various threats at Quentyn until he forcefully shuts him up and reciprocates with the threats. In true Quentyn fashion, however, he throws up as soon as he exits the station.

Meribeth follows Quentyn outside to console him and reveals that back when Quentyn and his friends got drunk for the first time, they hadn't been drinking blackberry sherry, but blackberry brandy - a much more potent drink. As it turns out, Meribeth had mixed up the bottles, which is why she felt that she owed Quentyn a favor.

In a dark room, Mulharney speaks to a figure obscured by the darkness. Through his conversation with the man, Mulharney reveals that while the coins were indeed counterfeit, the conspiracy theory was most certainly not. Mulharney also reveals the shady figure as one of the elders present at Quentyn's police station debriefing and that, as he already knew Quentyn ([http://npc.comicgenesis.com/d/20050325.html He is the city guard depicted here.]), Mulharney had actually helped Quentyn along his quest through his actions. While Mulharney knows that he can do little to expose this plot, he leaves the shady figure with a warning that future endeavors of the sort will not fare as well.

Once at home, Quentyn is summoned before the council. Gilder, as expected, is absolutely outraged and in the middle of a fierce diatribe when a message from the Sanctuary City council arrives, absolving Quentyn of all criminal charges. However, the board still votes to censure Quentyn for his rash actions.

Quentyn angrily tromps home. In a nearby bar, Rahan and his cohorts poke fun at him from afar until Meribeth comes by and calmly rebukes his accusations.

===2006===

Fearing parental retribution for his actions, Quentyn enters his home through the kitchen door, where he finds Squidge happily eating a pie. Squidge reveals that he had sought out Quentyn's parents beforehand and told them everything about his Sanctuary City exploits. Quentyn fearfully steps into the living room, asking his parents to hear him out. However, his parents burst into laughter instead of admonishing their child.

At Gilder's house, Gilder continues to vent about the Questor situation to his wife, claiming that this anachronistic behavior will only lead to ruin for the town.

Quentyn visits Rilcreek, who explains to him why he voted for censure: firstly, to play politics and maintain his influence in the council, secondly, to ensure that no harsher punishments would be suggested, and finally, to express genuine disapproval of Quentyn's actions. Unexpectedly, what Rilcreek took offense to was not Quentyn's actions, but rather his weak defense of said actions. To that end, Rilcreek gives Quentyn a Questor journal to ensure that Quentyn's account of the actions appears in the news scrips first.

Reading angry letters from people who had read the erroneous and sensationalized news scrip accounts, demanding retractions and corrections from the news scrips, and recovering from Rahan's pranks take up much of Quentyn's time in the subsequent weeks.

One night, Quentyn receives a letter from the council allowing for the removal of his censure if he agreed to several very limiting requirements and what turns out to be the journal of a former Questor of Freeman Downs.

Exercising his Questor powers, Quentyn summons an elder council meeting in the middle of the night. He reads out loud a passage from the journal of the former Questor, who is revealed as the first Quentyn the Questor. He then proceeds to harshly rebuke the council's actions; the council revokes the censure two days later.

With Squidge's help, Quentyn also puts an end to Rahan's pranks, forcing Rahan's family to pay considerable damages. The arc ends with Quentyn happily gloating about his revenge.

In "A Brief Interlude," a few unfortunate Rac Conans find themselves careening wildly through a field as they try to control their wind-powered lev-carriage. In the words of a traditional lev-carriage driver, "That ... is why you don't see no sail-powered lev-carriages."

In yet another “Meanwhile...” Fen is discovered sleeping in the Fae Rath again. As Fen shuffles off to bed, his teacher expresses concern over his obsession with the Rath. The comic flashes back to a few months prior, revealing the root of Fen’s obsession with the Rath - he wishes to become a living legend by retrieving a whole song from the Elsewhere.

Eventually, one of the teachers forces Fen to take some time off from school and the Fae Rath, as his grades have begun to slip due to his spending every available hour in the Rath. As he spends the free days sulking, the teacher enlists Kestrel’s help. Kestrel, with the help of a rebuilt golem, drags Fen away from his room and into the glorious outdoors. She realizes that Fen wants to use the Fae Rath as a fast track to success.

===2001===
The comic strip begins with a series of strips relating the adventures of ''Quentyn, Questor of Ridgedale''. The style of the telling is comical and stuffed with adventure-story clichés, giving a hint that it is not the real story. After a few strips, we find Quentyn, the hero of the strip, is reading a Questor novel.

===2002===
Quentyn's friends are introduced: Kestrel and Fennel. Fennel makes fun of Quentyn for reading the Questor novels. Quentyn is told that the wizard Rillcreek has his 'evaluation' ready. Quentyn quickly discovers that he has failed to show talent in ''Luxcraft'', the "magic" of the Rac Conan, and cannot be an apprentice. In shame, he wanders home. Quentyn's family is upset about the news, and his parents are very concerned about his future, as he has yet to display talent or real desire for any career as the time for him to choose a living draws near.

Quentyn's father takes him on a fishing trip to try to figure out what Quentyn really does want. Quentyn breaks down and tells him that he does not believe he will be able to be anything. His father reassures him and supports him. In the night, Quentyn has an encounter with a White Stag, a mythical creature associated with their religion. The Stag tells him to pursue his dream, though afterward Quentyn isn't entirely sure that the encounter was real.

When the choosing day ceremony arrives, Quentyn's social nemesis is introduced, '''Rahan''', the son of a wealthy father. Choosing day almost passes entirely before Quentyn finally summons the courage to name his choice - Questor - in the face of certain public mockery. The tables turn, however, when the magical artifact known as the ''soothstone'' shows that Quentyn's desire is the most fervent seen in centuries, stunning everyone into silence.

The entire village of Freeman Downs (Quentyn's hometown) is suddenly thrust into an uproar as the rules governing succession of a Questor, not used in a century or more, now are brought forward again. Quentyn must face any other challengers in a test of the village council's choosing. (The same council has Master Rillcreek as a member, which plays to Quentyn's favor.) After weeks of exhaustive crash-course training, Quentyn finds that there were no challengers and he is the official Questor of Freeman Downs.

That night, Quentyn's father takes him to the ''Gilded Flagon'', a local tavern. Quentyn's friends take leave from their respective professions (which they have by this point begun) and come to celebrate. After a few rounds of blackberry sherry, however, all three of them wander off and end up drunk in Master Rillcreek's workshop. Quentyn spends the next few weeks (and eventually months or years) piecing together what happened that night. It is during this night that his sword is created with Kestrel's help, though neither of them remember doing it.

Master Rillcreek quickly reviews the sword and pronounces it to be a generic practice-artifact for apprenticing [[Wikipedia:artifact (fantasy)|artificers]], and largely worthless. To keep from hurting Quentyn's feelings, however, Rillcreek and Quentyn's father decide to withhold that information. Meanwhile, Quentyn finds out that he spent most of his life's savings on 'equipment' at the local junk store. As he fumes at the humiliation and takes inventory, he finds that his equipment really isn't that bad a start, and he has most of what he needs to set up business.

Quentyn finds an unclaimed lot of just the right size and sets up shop, only to quickly learns that the world is still laughing at his expense. After two months without any sign of employment, he finally decides to go do something else... just as his first customer arrives. A rain-drenched child from the swamps offers Quentyn a solid gold coin (apparently quite a substantial amount of money) to help him find his missing sister. Quentyn tries to investigate among the "swamp folk" for clues. However, the swamp folk are xenophobes who don't appreciate his attempts and outright refuse to help.

Finding a clue in her "bevy nest", Quentyn starts off into the swamp to track the missing child. A short way into the swamp, he bumps into the official search party, which is none too thrilled to find him. They are slightly more receptive, however, when he explains his idea to find the missing girl...

The search party, now including Quentyn, is lured into a trap using a bit of the missing kit's fur. They are then surrounded by Gragum: [[anthropomorphic]] [[taur|gator-taurs]] who inhabit the Dire Swamps.

===2003===

The party is confronted by a Gragum [[Wikipedia:Shaman|Shaman]], the first Gragum mage ever, who has used his abilities to convince his fellow Gragum that he is a [[Wikipedia:Messiah|Messiah]], a God. He kidnapped the kit in order to lure other Rac Conans into the swamp so that he can divest them of their magical weapons and tools, as he does to the search party.

His apparent aim was to win prestige among his fellow Gragum and become their leader. From there he would have used his magical abilities and the items stolen from the Rac Conans to attack the Seven Villages. Using the little kit as a shield, he forces the search party to hand over their weapons.

The kit's crying angers Quentyn so much that he uses his Lux-infused Journey Boots to run across the water and grab the cage she's kept in, getting her away from the Shaman, though he trips and the cage falls into the swamp and sinks. Quentyn is forced to follow it down before the kit drowns.

With the Shaman's bargaining chip gone, the rest of the search party is now free to attack their captors, retrieving their weapons in the resultant confusion. The Shaman pursues Quentyn underwater in an attempt to get the kit back. Quentyn's sword inexplicably breaks loose and hovers toward its owner. Quentyn uses the sword to break the kit out of the cage.

The Shaman Gragum corners the kits underwater as Quentyn suddenly remembers his Fish Poppers, fishing explosives that activate when wet; he had put them in his pocket when he planned to go fishing at the beginning of this arc. He removes his coat and tosses it into the Gragum's mouth, where the Poppers detonate.

The Shaman is killed and Quentyn and the kit return to the surface. Seeing their 'Messiah' the Shaman killed, three Gragum set upon Quentyn with intent to kill him. Acting on instinct, Quentyn draws his sword and in one power slice, slays all three Gragum, leaving stunned all who see it.

The search party brings the kits aboard and tows the Gragum bodies as well, per the treaty between the Rac Conan and the Gragum that requires all Gragum killed by the Rac Conan to be registered and confirm that they were killed in self-defense.

The party returns the kit to her family and village who begin a celebration. Quentyn sneaks out, believing himself unworthy of being there. The Captain of the Guards, an earlier critic Quentyn’s role as Questor, approaches Quentyn and praises him for his courage and wit and assures him that he did good as the story arc draws to a close.

When we next see Quentyn he has just completed telling the story to Master Rillcreek, who is forced to reevaluate his previous assessment of Quentyn's sword and arranges for a trip to the College of [[Wikipedia:Thaumaturgy|Thaumaturgy]] in Sanctuary City, the capitol of the Seven Villages, in order to analyze the sword and its abilities.

As Rillcreek makes his preparations, Quentyn falls victim to Night Terrors (nightmares complete with luxcrafted visual effects) over his killing of the Gragum. Meanwhile his father, Quinn, gets to do some bragging as the Council breaks into fervor over Quentyn's actions; the young Questor is unaware of this.

Rillcreek and Quentyn then take a luft-ship, a Lux-powered airship, from Freeman Downs to Sanctuary City. Onboard he runs into a barmaid from the Gilded Flagon whom he had been cheeky toward while he was drunk. He apologizes and attempts to compliment her in a more genteel manner, with dismal and embarrassing results.

After the ship lands in Sanctuary City, Quentyn's bad luck continues when he runs into Rahan, who is no less a bully now than before, and is unimpressed with Quentyn's feat in saving the Swamp Chief's daughter from the Gragum. Quentyn is still unable to deal with Rahan, much to his frustration.

From there, Rillcreek and Quentyn visit the College of Thaumaturgy to meet Headmaster Irons, an old friend of Rillcreek's, and run into an old friend of Quentyn's, Kestrel, who is a student there.

Quentyn relates his story to her and tells us via a flashback what happened when he sought Merchant Max (the Merchant who sold Quentyn the sword and swindled him out of all his money when he was drunk) about the nature of the sword. Max claimed that the sword was broken when Quentyn bought it and that he did nothing to it, save slap a "Sales Pitch" Spell on it.

Returning to the present, the four of them go to Headmaster Irons' workshop, where he attempts to figure out the sword. Hours pass with no success. Unable to work out how a jumble of incomplete spells could exhibit the power it did in the Swamp, Irons takes it out to a [[Wikipedia:Henge|Henge]] (a stone circle used as a safe testing area for strange or potentially dangerous artifacts), where he instructs Quentyn to draw his sword and use its power against one of the stones.

The sword acts in a phenomenally bizarre manner, embarrassing Quentyn, who in a fit of anger commands the sword to do something. The sword releases its energies in a fantastic manner that impresses and excites Quentyn, but scares everyone else. Irons and the others convince Quentyn to give up his sword so that it can be examined further. The sword is kept under lock and key as Quentyn, Rillcreek, and Kestrel go down to the Dining Hall for dinner.

While there Quentyn reveals that he overheard Irons say that Quentyn was "bonded" to his sword, prompting an excited conversation with the Artifactor students who attempt to determine what kind of bonding it is and how it occurred. Kestrel speaks up and reveals that she remembered doing something with the sword, a tuft of Quentyn's fur, and a crystal, bonding Quentyn to his sword.

As an apology, Kestrel offers to show Quentyn around Sanctuary City while he's there. Quentyn accepts, and he and Rillcreek take their leave of the College to go check into the Green Bough Inn, where they'll stay so long as they're in the City.

===2004===

The year begins with a final strip in this arc with a letter written by Quentyn to his parents explaining his situation and wishing them well.

The first tangent of Tales of the Questor, called ''Meanwhile: Part One'' then begins, the only strips in the series that are not colored. This entire segment seems only sketched, yet is not lacking in any manner. In this arc a Luxcraft History Professor named Inkling begins a discussion with his class denying the existence of magic, prompting disbelief among his students. One of the students in the class is Quentyn's friend Kestrel, who features prominently in this side story.

This then begins an explanation of what Lux is and how it exists in regards to the Rac Conan. It is an entirely natural aspect of Rac Conan biology, not unlike the ability of electric eels to manipulate electricity. There is nothing otherworldly about it, hence classifying Lux usage as magic is incorrect.

Background information on the history of the Rac'Conan is also included, especially regarding their interactions with humans. Humans could not comprehend Lux and viewed the Rac Conan as sorcerers and witches and treated them as such. This led to some Rac Conan using their abilities in an attempt to frighten and control humans, with disastrous results for themselves and their people.

But these Rac Conan, the Fakirs, nevertheless left their mark, since words like magician and wizard are still used in regard to Lux use. Professor Inkling also expresses hope for bridging the gap with Humans and the other races so that the Rac Conan will no longer need to hide. As class concludes, so does Part I of ''Meanwhile''.

Next is ''Meanwhile: Part II''. This arc is colored, though the artistic style is different than that of the main story. This one features Brother Linnaeus, who is waiting with the Guardsmen from the Gragum story arc at the edge of the Dire Swamp. His mission is to save souls. He tells us in a flashback of his encounter with Quentyn, who visited the Sacred Heart Tabernacle, a Sojourner Church in Sanctuary where Linnaeus was an Assistant Minister.

Quentyn went in to pray, and to unburden himself about the Gragum he killed and about a strange encounter he had with the Gragum leader when Quentyn and the guards returned the bodies of the Gragum slain by them. Quentyn told Linnaeus in another flashback that the Gragum leader was amazed that Quentyn had killed the Gragum, and had asked him if he was God.

When Quentyn explained that he wasn't God, the Gragum leader told him that many frauds, like the Shaman, had come to the Gragum claiming to be God. He wondered why God never came to the Gragum and gave Quentyn a necklace asking him to give it to God and ask Him why He hadn't come.

Quentyn's flashback ends; he leaves the necklace on a Cross and departs the Tabernacle. Brother Linnaeus' own flashback ends right afterward. It's taken him twelve months to put together what he's planning, and when the Gragum leader arrives, he announces that he will go among the Gragum and teach them about God.

While initially skeptical, Linneaus wins the Gragum Leader's support when he admits to being Lux-blind (Having no Lux ability whatsoever) and agrees to put himself in the Gragum's hands. Brother Linneaus is then carried into the Dire Swamp on the Gragum leader. The success of his Missionary work, and his own fate, are as of yet unknown.

''Meanwhile: Part III'' then begins, with yet another different artistic style. This one revolves around '''Nessie''', the swamp kit Quentyn saved from the Gragum.Ever since her rescue, her mother has been concerned about the way she's acting. Nessie has developed a powerful crush on her savior but is afraid that her tail, which was damaged when the Gragum constantly plucked fur from it, will mar her forever.

She developed the ability to "Ken" upon her rescue, and had been using small animals in the swamp to fetch the tufts of her fur, in the hope that she can be healed.

But her hopes of going to the city and seeing a sorcerer are dashed when she realizes that they can't afford it. Nessie then uses her Kenning to find gold, which she does in the form of a large treasure chest at the bottom of the swamp. She uses her ability to command a large creature into fetching it for her. Unaware of all of this, her parents have brought the Frog Mage (the wizard who accompanied Quentyn and the Guards on the search party for Nessie when she was abducted) to her to test her.

His discovery is interrupted as a local calls to her father, the Chief, that a large creature called a mudgullet is wrecking the fishery. The Chief runs off and Nessie, concerned for his safety follows. The creature nearly devours the Chief; he is saved when Nessie commands the creature to back down. She then orders it to spit up the treasure chest it brought and with her last ounce of strength orders it to leave.

When she recovers, Nessie finds that her family retrieved the treasure from where the Mud Gullet spat it up and are grateful that no one was killed during the attack. Nessie then breaks down and confesses to summoning the beast. The Frog Mage explains that Nessie is a Kenning prodigy and that he would like to take her to Sanctuary City for further testing. Nessie's fears about her tail's condition are unfounded as her parents explain that it'll grow back in time.

Using the money, Nessie, her older brother Jacobin, Oggy (a bog-dragon Nessie enlisted when collecting her fur tufts and kept as a pet), and her mother accompany the Frog Mage back to Sanctuary City. This sidestory eventually intersects with the main storyline around Quentyn.

After six months of side stories, we return to the main story. As promised, Kestrel is showing Quentyn around the city. Some of their stops include the Luxfont and the Archivist Guild's Central Library, where Quentyn picks up books on Questors and Questoring; they also view a display about (among other things) artifacts pertaining to those who tried and failed to take over the Seven Villages and, of most interest to Quentyn, a replica of Snakefang: the sword used by Questor Quentyn of Ridgedale, Quentyn's namesake, founder of his hometown Freeman Downs, and the hero of the tale which originally started this entire comic.

While admiring it, he lets his identity slip to a Rac Conan kit next to him who then begs him for an interview for his newspaper, ''Fact and Opinion''. His name is '''Emmet''' and he's a Soothscribe. He's fascinated by Quentyn and the paper he works on already ran a story on Quentyn's rescue of Nessie, though the artist's rendition of Quentyn was a bit off.

Emmet invites Quentyn and Kestrel to the office of ''Fact and Opinion'' so that they can update the picture of Quentyn and get his interview. Quentyn is pleasantly surprised by the unusually positive reception he gets there.

As the artist, Aislynn, is redoing the portrait of Quentyn, Emmet begins the interview. When he inquires whether or not Quentyn dyed his forelock white to match to look more like his namesake, Quentyn of Ridgedale, who had also had a white forelock, Quentyn reacts with surprise at this revelation. He hasn't dyed it and muses that he thought it was getting paler since the White Stag licked him there just before his Choosing Day.

The others are stunned at the news. Kestrel relates that the White Stag is a rare and mysterious creature as well as an important symbol of the Sojourner Church. Before settling down in what is today the Seven Villages, the Rac Conan lived in what were called the Wandering Times. During this period a White Stag led a Rac Conan to a Human Minister who was also following a White Stag. The Minister taught the Rac Conan about God and his faith and that Rac Conan became the founder of the Sojourner Church.

Emmet adds that Questor Quentyn of Ridgedale also had a white forelock and used to say that: "It must be where the White Stag licked me...."

Quentyn tries to dismiss it all as a dream, but Kestrel inquires how a dream could cause his forelock to turn white.

When the next ''Fact and Opinion'' comes out, it appears that they did not write just one article on Quentyn, but devoted the entire issue to him.

Rilcreek encourages Quentyn to use this publicity to his advantage and invites him to go to a party being held at the Hall of Flour and Grain Merchants by the Millfolk family, a very rich and powerful family of grain merchants.

As the guests draw Quentyn out into talking about himself, Lord Millfolk asks Rillcreek if he can find out why the Brownies (Gnomes) have gone. Because of this, the rats the Brownies kept in check have returned and multiplied. Rillcreek is unable to offer an explanation.

Meanwhile a young kit approaches Quentyn and after finding out that he is a Questor, falls asleep in his lap. His mother asks Quentyn not to disturb the kit as this is the first he's slept in over two days.

Quentyn tells Rillcreek that he will not be returning with him to Freeman Downs and has taken a job with the Millfolks. He explains that the Millfolks' son, '''Colin''', suffers from Night Terrors. Usually the kit's father would stay with Colin at night to dispel the Night Terrors, which manifest themselves with Lux. However, Lord Millfolk already tried staying with Colin, to no avail. Because Colin is a Questor fan, the Millfolks hope Quentyn will have more luck.

Colin is at first dejected because he doesn't think Quentyn will believe him when he says that he isn't being haunted by Night Terrors but by real monster rats. Quentyn promises that he will help Colin, no matter what it is, and wins his trust.

Quentyn spends several days at the Millfolks' Estate and several nights with Colin, but no Night Terrors appear. During that time though, he does find out several troubling things about the Millfolk family.

Lady Millfolk is often too busy for Colin. She's a working girl who married into a rich family by marrying Cole Millfolk. As such she's constantly criticized by other rich women, including her mother in law for not acting enough like a "proper" lady. She feels so pressured that she consented to listen to a doctor hired by her mother-in-law who said that she shouldn't "mother" Colin too much or go to him when he's going through the Terrors.

Lord Millfolk is an easygoing man, fair and friendly to his workers as they repair faulty Lux lines and sewer lines, and is a hero to his son. However he is going through feelings of inadequacy for not being able to help Colin with his Night Terrors.

Quentyn meanwhile goes investigating, trying to find the root of Colin's Terrors. It turns out that not only is he not afraid of rats, as Quentyn originally thought, but is in fact a fearless boy who hunted rats with the Brownies. Quentyn is unable to discover a source for Colin's Terrors.

Then one night a monster appears out of a crack in the floor, which turns out only to be a Bogey-man named '''Squidge''': a small shapeshifting creature that's essentially harmless. Squidge tells them of scary shadow rats that live down below in the sewers.

Out of the crack come a horde of black shadow rats. These are not Night Terrors, as they manage to inflict harm on Quentyn. Using Lux causes them to multiply uncontrollably. Colin figures out that they were Wights, from one of the Questor stories he read and thus vulnerable to fire.

With the recent revelation, Quentyn uses fire to kill several Wights and drive out the rest. With the Millfolk's arrival, and the realization that the rats were real, they retreat to the Dining Hall.

Using the book as a resource, Quentyn figures out how to destroy the Wights. Because they sense and feed on Lux, he has to be the one to go since he's the weakest mage there. Using Squidge as a guide, Quentyn travels down into the sewer and finds a door to the lab of one Rosad Athair Beither, the "evilest Rac Conan ever" - a monster hunter turned mad scientist who lived centuries ago.

After sending Squidge back with a message, Quentyn goes in alone and discovers a Rat King, five rats bound together by their tails. They are the source and controller of the Wights. They create more Wights and trap Quentyn. His body would provide sufficient food to allow the Rat King to produce enough shadow rats to overrun the city.

In a last ditch effort, Quentyn heroically hurls himself through the Wights massed in front of him, and though bleeding profusely, manages to kill the Rat King and destroy the Wights.

He nearly dies from blood loss and injuries. He has a near death experience in which he comes before Yeshua and believes himself a sinner who threw his life away. Yeshua believes otherwise but tells Quentyn that it is not his time. The White Stag licks Quentyn and he wakes up to find Squidge biting him in order to make him stay awake and seek help.

Quentyn finds a ladder up to the surface and collapses before a patrol. He's taken to the hospital where everyone piles in to see him when he wakes up: Nessie, Emmett, the Millfolks, his parents, and a guardsman.

Nessie, it turns out, was the one who found Quentyn. Her Kenning abilities alerted her to the Wights and to where Quentyn was. Speaking to Quentyn and Emmet alone, the guard informs Quentyn that the Council and the Guard want Quentyn to play down what Quentyn saw in the lab.

Quentyn and Emmet are told that Rosad Beither had disciples, and that the Council didn't want to risk a panic by revealing that. Emmet and Quentyn are unhappy and think that lying to the people is wrong, but have not disputed the official story put out about the Wights. At least not yet.

Quentyn also confronts the Millfolks about the doctor who advised Lady Millfolk not to go to Colin, and gives his own advice to the Millfolks, earning the ire of Lady Millfolks' mother-in-law. Colin's Night Terrors are cured, the Brownies return and adopt Quentyn into their tribe. Then Quentyn gets news about his sword.

The sword may have the most unique Lux pattern in the world, and it contains eight new runes. He learns that it is indeed bonded to him until the day he dies, so that only he can use it. While he can't control what it does, he can remove the Sales Pitch Spell by naming the sword. He appropriately names it Wildcard.

We also learn from Kestrel that her and Quentyn's friend '''Fen''' is obsessed with trying to catch a Fae song by sitting in a Fae Rath (Fairy Ring).

Quentyn prepares to return home. However, as he's buying a ticket back, his pack, in which he has stowed Wildcard, is stolen from him. The thief gets away with Quentyn's most prized possession. The thief, who wore a purple scarf, did so as an initiation to a gang called the Royals, all of their members wear purple. The thief is accepted when Wildcard is handed over.

Quentyn agonizes over what to do and finally decides to go "undercover" to get his sword back. Squidge, who stowed away in his money pouch, helps Quentyn get in touch with the Brownies, who agree to help him look for the sword.

As they're doing this, Quentyn first sends a message to his parents saying that his homecoming will be delayed; he then goes into a tavern in order to find information about the gang that robbed him.

During a chess game, he learns that the Royals, whose color matches that of the scarf that the thief wore, run the high alleys; he goes there in order to spy on them. His early attempts end up landing him in jail until Squidge pays bail. Quentyn is no closer to the Royals.

He instead chooses to spy on them from above which presents different troubles, including angry citizens with guns and crashing through the roof of someone's home, once again landing him in jail. He pays bail again, but this time is informed by the officer who arrested him both times, one Officer Mulharney, that he'll be keeping a close eye on Quentyn.

Desperate and not thinking clearly due to the separation anxiety he feels over the loss of Wildcard, Quentyn abandons all pretense at subtlety and wanders from tavern to tavern in the Tumbledowns, asking about the Royals. In one such locale he gets an answer in the form of a rival gang: the Red Caps. They throw him out of the bar, thinking him a spy for their rivals.

They strip his shirt off him, hoping to verify this through whatever gang tattoos, brands, or marks he might had. That Quentyn has none proves that he is not a spy nor a member of any gang.

However the Red Caps decide that they don't like "no-names" any more than they do enemy gangs so they decide to "mess him up." Quentyn uses his glimmer rope (which he was wearing as a belt) in order to climb up a wall and escape, with the Red Caps in hot pursuit.

After a frantic chase through the Tumbledowns, Quentyn discovers the large wall that separates the Tumbledowns from the Good Neighborhoods and finds a small crack in it he can climb through. As he's crawling through the Red Caps catch up with him and attempt to pull him back in since they're too big to fit through and the wall's too high to climb. While they fail to keep hold of Quentyn, they do succeed in ripping his pants off, leaving Quentyn naked on the other side of the wall in a affluent gated community called Silvergate.

Quentyn sneaks into a large household having a party in the hopes of snatching something he can use for clothes. Meribeth, the barmaiden from Freeman Downs, is inside; her great aunt Rubey is hosting the gala. Quentyn, meanwhile, sneaks into a broom closet and in the process overhears a conversation regarding two men who may be behind the gang troubles in Sanctuary. However, an incoming servant cuts his listening short and he's forced to flee down a hall. Tripping over a mop, he finds himself on stage in front of everyone, still naked, and mistaken for a Bard.

Quentyn freaks out after seeing Meribeth in the crowd and throws a potted plant out the window, through which he escapes. He is then seen in prison. We hear that he was arrested after running from several guards, including two females. The Adjudicator dismisses the numerous charges against Quentyn--disturbing the peace, resisting arrest, public indecency, et al--as he thinks that Quentyn has suffered enough.

Quentyn is released and, once again clothed, pounds the streets of the Tumbledowns, furious at his humiliation and lack of success. He then stumbles upon a trio of Red Caps beating up a kit with a purple hat - the Royals' insignia. By a combination of skill and luck, he and Squidge knock out the Red Caps. When Quentyn tries to escape with the kit he is stopped by one of the guards (Mulharney again), and is so frustrated at being caught again that he kicks the guard in the groin.

Grateful for his rescue and amused at seeing the guard beaten up, the kit invites Quentyn back to the Royals' hideout where he can lie low for a while. Quentyn is amazed at his luck, but is less happy when the kit tells him to leave Squidge behind because the Royals' leader believes all small fae, or "grubbers" as he calls them, are spies for the guards.

Quentyn arrives at the Royals' hideout and is allowed to stay. A party is thrown when they hear of his injuring Mulharney and in the course of the party all of the Royals get either drunk or high and consequently fall asleep, allowing Quentyn to look for and ultimately find his sword. However, it is highly guarded by various Lux-powered wards. The kit Quentyn had rescued discovers him staring at his sword and admonishes him for such a risky move. The kit also reveals that he was the one who had stolen Wildcard from Quentyn.

Two days later, an unknown buyer appears. He demands that all grunt Royals leave the hideout, but Quentyn manages to sneak back in. The buyer notices the sword and the fact that it isn't properly warded, but gives up all apparent interest when the Royals leader, Viktor, claims it as a trophy. The exchange complete, the buyer leaves the hideout. A Royal discovers Quentyn in his hiding place, who jumps through a hole in the floor and promptly sprains his ankle. He is captured and brought before Viktor. One of the females recognizes Quentyn as a Questor. Due to this, Viktor and the others decide to give Quentyn the beating of a lifetime, abandoning his battered body in a trashbin. Coincidentally, Squidge had been hiding in the bin. Quentyn vehemently swears to get his sword back.

After quite a bit of preparation, Quentyn lures the Redcaps straight into the Royals hideout, thus sparking a massive brawl. He subsequently uses some poppers to scare a couple of tree apes into demolishing the Royals hideout. As the gang members stumble out of the ruins, Quentyn activates another of his tricks, unleashing a tremendous charge of lux within a matter of seconds. This disables all lux-powered items within a hundred yards, including the wards and lux tappers surrounding Wildcard. The connection restored, Quentyn summons Wildcard back to his hand.

At that moment, the City Guard appears and takes everyone prisoner. Quentyn is released in a matter of hours, but not before a conversation with several of the higher-ups of Sanctuary City. All charges against Quentyn are dropped, much to the dismay of Mulharney. Just as the elders begin to formulate a grand conspiracy theory regarding the human coins found at the gang hideouts, Quentyn deflates the theory by pointing out that the coins are counterfeit.

As he is about to leave the police station, Squidge says that he managed to get someone from Freeman Downs to pay for his legal fees - Meribeth. Viktor, in a nearby cell, spouts various threats at Quentyn until he forcefully shuts him up and reciprocates with the threats. In true Quentyn fashion, however, he throws up as soon as he exits the station.

Meribeth follows Quentyn outside to console him and reveals that back when Quentyn and his friends got drunk for the first time, they hadn't been drinking blackberry sherry, but blackberry brandy - a much more potent drink. As it turns out, Meribeth had mixed up the bottles, which is why she felt that she owed Quentyn a favor.

In a dark room, Mulharney speaks to a figure obscured by the darkness. Through his conversation with the man, Mulharney reveals that while the coins were indeed counterfeit, the conspiracy theory was most certainly not. Mulharney also reveals the shady figure as one of the elders present at Quentyn's police station debriefing and that, as he already knew Quentyn ([http://npc.comicgenesis.com/d/20050325.html He is the city guard depicted here.]), Mulharney had actually helped Quentyn along his quest through his actions. While Mulharney knows that he can do little to expose this plot, he leaves the shady figure with a warning that future endeavors of the sort will not fare as well.

Once at home, Quentyn is summoned before the council. Gilder, as expected, is absolutely outraged and in the middle of a fierce diatribe when a message from the Sanctuary City council arrives, absolving Quentyn of all criminal charges. However, the board still votes to censure Quentyn for his rash actions.

Quentyn angrily tromps home. In a nearby bar, Rahan and his cohorts poke fun at him from afar until Meribeth comes by and calmly rebukes his accusations.

===2006===

Fearing parental retribution for his actions, Quentyn enters his home through the kitchen door, where he finds Squidge happily eating a pie. Squidge reveals that he had sought out Quentyn's parents beforehand and told them everything about his Sanctuary City exploits. Quentyn fearfully steps into the living room, asking his parents to hear him out. However, his parents burst into laughter instead of admonishing their child.

At Gilder's house, Gilder continues to vent about the Questor situation to his wife, claiming that this anachronistic behavior will only lead to ruin for the town.

Quentyn visits Rilcreek, who explains to him why he voted for censure: firstly, to play politics and maintain his influence in the council, secondly, to ensure that no harsher punishments would be suggested, and finally, to express genuine disapproval of Quentyn's actions. Unexpectedly, what Rilcreek took offense to was not Quentyn's actions, but rather his weak defense of said actions. To that end, Rilcreek gives Quentyn a Questor journal to ensure that Quentyn's account of the actions appears in the news scrips first.

Reading angry letters from people who had read the erroneous and sensationalized news scrip accounts, demanding retractions and corrections from the news scrips, and recovering from Rahan's pranks take up much of Quentyn's time in the subsequent weeks.

One night, Quentyn receives a letter from the council allowing for the removal of his censure if he agreed to several very limiting requirements and what turns out to be the journal of a former Questor of Freeman Downs.

Exercising his Questor powers, Quentyn summons an elder council meeting in the middle of the night. He reads out loud a passage from the journal of the former Questor, who is revealed as the first Quentyn the Questor. He then proceeds to harshly rebuke the council's actions; the council revokes the censure two days later.

With Squidge's help, Quentyn also puts an end to Rahan's pranks, forcing Rahan's family to pay considerable damages. The arc ends with Quentyn happily gloating about his revenge.

In "A Brief Interlude," a few unfortunate Rac Conans find themselves careening wildly through a field as they try to control their wind-powered lev-carriage. In the words of a traditional lev-carriage driver, "That ... is why you don't see no sail-powered lev-carriages."

In yet another “Meanwhile...” Fen is discovered sleeping in the Fae Rath again. As Fen shuffles off to bed, his teacher expresses concern over his obsession with the Rath. The comic flashes back to a few months prior, revealing the root of Fen’s obsession with the Rath - he wishes to become a living legend by retrieving a whole song from the Elsewhere.

Eventually, one of the teachers forces Fen to take some time off from school and the Fae Rath, as his grades have begun to slip due to his spending every available hour in the Rath. As he spends the free days sulking, the teacher enlists Kestrel’s help. Kestrel, with the help of a rebuilt golem, drags Fen away from his room and into the glorious outdoors. She realizes that Fen wants to use the Fae Rath as a fast track to success.

===2001===
The comic strip begins with a series of strips relating the adventures of ''Quentyn, Questor of Ridgedale''. The style of the telling is comical and stuffed with adventure-story clichés, giving a hint that it is not the real story. After a few strips, we find Quentyn, the hero of the strip, is reading a Questor novel.

===2002===
Quentyn's friends are introduced: Kestrel and Fennel. Fennel makes fun of Quentyn for reading the Questor novels. Quentyn is told that the wizard Rillcreek has his 'evaluation' ready. Quentyn quickly discovers that he has failed to show talent in ''Luxcraft'', the "magic" of the Rac Conan, and cannot be an apprentice. In shame, he wanders home. Quentyn's family is upset about the news, and his parents are very concerned about his future, as he has yet to display talent or real desire for any career as the time for him to choose a living draws near.

Quentyn's father takes him on a fishing trip to try to figure out what Quentyn really does want. Quentyn breaks down and tells him that he does not believe he will be able to be anything. His father reassures him and supports him. In the night, Quentyn has an encounter with a White Stag, a mythical creature associated with their religion. The Stag tells him to pursue his dream, though afterward Quentyn isn't entirely sure that the encounter was real.

When the choosing day ceremony arrives, Quentyn's social nemesis is introduced, '''Rahan''', the son of a wealthy father. Choosing day almost passes entirely before Quentyn finally summons the courage to name his choice - Questor - in the face of certain public mockery. The tables turn, however, when the magical artifact known as the ''soothstone'' shows that Quentyn's desire is the most fervent seen in centuries, stunning everyone into silence.

The entire village of Freeman Downs (Quentyn's hometown) is suddenly thrust into an uproar as the rules governing succession of a Questor, not used in a century or more, now are brought forward again. Quentyn must face any other challengers in a test of the village council's choosing. (The same council has Master Rillcreek as a member, which plays to Quentyn's favor.) After weeks of exhaustive crash-course training, Quentyn finds that there were no challengers and he is the official Questor of Freeman Downs.

That night, Quentyn's father takes him to the ''Gilded Flagon'', a local tavern. Quentyn's friends take leave from their respective professions (which they have by this point begun) and come to celebrate. After a few rounds of blackberry sherry, however, all three of them wander off and end up drunk in Master Rillcreek's workshop. Quentyn spends the next few weeks (and eventually months or years) piecing together what happened that night. It is during this night that his sword is created with Kestrel's help, though neither of them remember doing it.

Master Rillcreek quickly reviews the sword and pronounces it to be a generic practice-artifact for apprenticing [[Wikipedia:artifact (fantasy)|artificers]], and largely worthless. To keep from hurting Quentyn's feelings, however, Rillcreek and Quentyn's father decide to withhold that information. Meanwhile, Quentyn finds out that he spent most of his life's savings on 'equipment' at the local junk store. As he fumes at the humiliation and takes inventory, he finds that his equipment really isn't that bad a start, and he has most of what he needs to set up business.

Quentyn finds an unclaimed lot of just the right size and sets up shop, only to quickly learns that the world is still laughing at his expense. After two months without any sign of employment, he finally decides to go do something else... just as his first customer arrives. A rain-drenched child from the swamps offers Quentyn a solid gold coin (apparently quite a substantial amount of money) to help him find his missing sister. Quentyn tries to investigate among the "swamp folk" for clues. However, the swamp folk are xenophobes who don't appreciate his attempts and outright refuse to help.

Finding a clue in her "bevy nest", Quentyn starts off into the swamp to track the missing child. A short way into the swamp, he bumps into the official search party, which is none too thrilled to find him. They are slightly more receptive, however, when he explains his idea to find the missing girl...

The search party, now including Quentyn, is lured into a trap using a bit of the missing kit's fur. They are then surrounded by Gragum: [[anthropomorphic]] [[taur|gator-taurs]] who inhabit the Dire Swamps.

===2003===

The party is confronted by a Gragum [[Wikipedia:Shaman|Shaman]], the first Gragum mage ever, who has used his abilities to convince his fellow Gragum that he is a [[Wikipedia:Messiah|Messiah]], a God. He kidnapped the kit in order to lure other Rac Conans into the swamp so that he can divest them of their magical weapons and tools, as he does to the search party.

His apparent aim was to win prestige among his fellow Gragum and become their leader. From there he would have used his magical abilities and the items stolen from the Rac Conans to attack the Seven Villages. Using the little kit as a shield, he forces the search party to hand over their weapons.

The kit's crying angers Quentyn so much that he uses his Lux-infused Journey Boots to run across the water and grab the cage she's kept in, getting her away from the Shaman, though he trips and the cage falls into the swamp and sinks. Quentyn is forced to follow it down before the kit drowns.

With the Shaman's bargaining chip gone, the rest of the search party is now free to attack their captors, retrieving their weapons in the resultant confusion. The Shaman pursues Quentyn underwater in an attempt to get the kit back. Quentyn's sword inexplicably breaks loose and hovers toward its owner. Quentyn uses the sword to break the kit out of the cage.

The Shaman Gragum corners the kits underwater as Quentyn suddenly remembers his Fish Poppers, fishing explosives that activate when wet; he had put them in his pocket when he planned to go fishing at the beginning of this arc. He removes his coat and tosses it into the Gragum's mouth, where the Poppers detonate.

The Shaman is killed and Quentyn and the kit return to the surface. Seeing their 'Messiah' the Shaman killed, three Gragum set upon Quentyn with intent to kill him. Acting on instinct, Quentyn draws his sword and in one power slice, slays all three Gragum, leaving stunned all who see it.

The search party brings the kits aboard and tows the Gragum bodies as well, per the treaty between the Rac Conan and the Gragum that requires all Gragum killed by the Rac Conan to be registered and confirm that they were killed in self-defense.

The party returns the kit to her family and village who begin a celebration. Quentyn sneaks out, believing himself unworthy of being there. The Captain of the Guards, an earlier critic Quentyn’s role as Questor, approaches Quentyn and praises him for his courage and wit and assures him that he did good as the story arc draws to a close.

When we next see Quentyn he has just completed telling the story to Master Rillcreek, who is forced to reevaluate his previous assessment of Quentyn's sword and arranges for a trip to the College of [[Wikipedia:Thaumaturgy|Thaumaturgy]] in Sanctuary City, the capitol of the Seven Villages, in order to analyze the sword and its abilities.

As Rillcreek makes his preparations, Quentyn falls victim to Night Terrors (nightmares complete with luxcrafted visual effects) over his killing of the Gragum. Meanwhile his father, Quinn, gets to do some bragging as the Council breaks into fervor over Quentyn's actions; the young Questor is unaware of this.

Rillcreek and Quentyn then take a luft-ship, a Lux-powered airship, from Freeman Downs to Sanctuary City. Onboard he runs into a barmaid from the Gilded Flagon whom he had been cheeky toward while he was drunk. He apologizes and attempts to compliment her in a more genteel manner, with dismal and embarrassing results.

After the ship lands in Sanctuary City, Quentyn's bad luck continues when he runs into Rahan, who is no less a bully now than before, and is unimpressed with Quentyn's feat in saving the Swamp Chief's daughter from the Gragum. Quentyn is still unable to deal with Rahan, much to his frustration.

From there, Rillcreek and Quentyn visit the College of Thaumaturgy to meet Headmaster Irons, an old friend of Rillcreek's, and run into an old friend of Quentyn's, Kestrel, who is a student there.

Quentyn relates his story to her and tells us via a flashback what happened when he sought Merchant Max (the Merchant who sold Quentyn the sword and swindled him out of all his money when he was drunk) about the nature of the sword. Max claimed that the sword was broken when Quentyn bought it and that he did nothing to it, save slap a "Sales Pitch" Spell on it.

Returning to the present, the four of them go to Headmaster Irons' workshop, where he attempts to figure out the sword. Hours pass with no success. Unable to work out how a jumble of incomplete spells could exhibit the power it did in the Swamp, Irons takes it out to a [[Wikipedia:Henge|Henge]] (a stone circle used as a safe testing area for strange or potentially dangerous artifacts), where he instructs Quentyn to draw his sword and use its power against one of the stones.

The sword acts in a phenomenally bizarre manner, embarrassing Quentyn, who in a fit of anger commands the sword to do something. The sword releases its energies in a fantastic manner that impresses and excites Quentyn, but scares everyone else. Irons and the others convince Quentyn to give up his sword so that it can be examined further. The sword is kept under lock and key as Quentyn, Rillcreek, and Kestrel go down to the Dining Hall for dinner.

While there Quentyn reveals that he overheard Irons say that Quentyn was "bonded" to his sword, prompting an excited conversation with the Artifactor students who attempt to determine what kind of bonding it is and how it occurred. Kestrel speaks up and reveals that she remembered doing something with the sword, a tuft of Quentyn's fur, and a crystal, bonding Quentyn to his sword.

As an apology, Kestrel offers to show Quentyn around Sanctuary City while he's there. Quentyn accepts, and he and Rillcreek take their leave of the College to go check into the Green Bough Inn, where they'll stay so long as they're in the City.

===2004===

The year begins with a final strip in this arc with a letter written by Quentyn to his parents explaining his situation and wishing them well.

The first tangent of Tales of the Questor, called ''Meanwhile: Part One'' then begins, the only strips in the series that are not colored. This entire segment seems only sketched, yet is not lacking in any manner. In this arc a Luxcraft History Professor named Inkling begins a discussion with his class denying the existence of magic, prompting disbelief among his students. One of the students in the class is Quentyn's friend Kestrel, who features prominently in this side story.

This then begins an explanation of what Lux is and how it exists in regards to the Rac Conan. It is an entirely natural aspect of Rac Conan biology, not unlike the ability of electric eels to manipulate electricity. There is nothing otherworldly about it, hence classifying Lux usage as magic is incorrect.

Background information on the history of the Rac'Conan is also included, especially regarding their interactions with humans. Humans could not comprehend Lux and viewed the Rac Conan as sorcerers and witches and treated them as such. This led to some Rac Conan using their abilities in an attempt to frighten and control humans, with disastrous results for themselves and their people.

But these Rac Conan, the Fakirs, nevertheless left their mark, since words like magician and wizard are still used in regard to Lux use. Professor Inkling also expresses hope for bridging the gap with Humans and the other races so that the Rac Conan will no longer need to hide. As class concludes, so does Part I of ''Meanwhile''.

Next is ''Meanwhile: Part II''. This arc is colored, though the artistic style is different than that of the main story. This one features Brother Linnaeus, who is waiting with the Guardsmen from the Gragum story arc at the edge of the Dire Swamp. His mission is to save souls. He tells us in a flashback of his encounter with Quentyn, who visited the Sacred Heart Tabernacle, a Sojourner Church in Sanctuary where Linnaeus was an Assistant Minister.

Quentyn went in to pray, and to unburden himself about the Gragum he killed and about a strange encounter he had with the Gragum leader when Quentyn and the guards returned the bodies of the Gragum slain by them. Quentyn told Linnaeus in another flashback that the Gragum leader was amazed that Quentyn had killed the Gragum, and had asked him if he was God.

When Quentyn explained that he wasn't God, the Gragum leader told him that many frauds, like the Shaman, had come to the Gragum claiming to be God. He wondered why God never came to the Gragum and gave Quentyn a necklace asking him to give it to God and ask Him why He hadn't come.

Quentyn's flashback ends; he leaves the necklace on a Cross and departs the Tabernacle. Brother Linnaeus' own flashback ends right afterward. It's taken him twelve months to put together what he's planning, and when the Gragum leader arrives, he announces that he will go among the Gragum and teach them about God.

While initially skeptical, Linneaus wins the Gragum Leader's support when he admits to being Lux-blind (Having no Lux ability whatsoever) and agrees to put himself in the Gragum's hands. Brother Linneaus is then carried into the Dire Swamp on the Gragum leader. The success of his Missionary work, and his own fate, are as of yet unknown.

''Meanwhile: Part III'' then begins, with yet another different artistic style. This one revolves around '''Nessie''', the swamp kit Quentyn saved from the Gragum.Ever since her rescue, her mother has been concerned about the way she's acting. Nessie has developed a powerful crush on her savior but is afraid that her tail, which was damaged when the Gragum constantly plucked fur from it, will mar her forever.

She developed the ability to "Ken" upon her rescue, and had been using small animals in the swamp to fetch the tufts of her fur, in the hope that she can be healed.

But her hopes of going to the city and seeing a sorcerer are dashed when she realizes that they can't afford it. Nessie then uses her Kenning to find gold, which she does in the form of a large treasure chest at the bottom of the swamp. She uses her ability to command a large creature into fetching it for her. Unaware of all of this, her parents have brought the Frog Mage (the wizard who accompanied Quentyn and the Guards on the search party for Nessie when she was abducted) to her to test her.

His discovery is interrupted as a local calls to her father, the Chief, that a large creature called a mudgullet is wrecking the fishery. The Chief runs off and Nessie, concerned for his safety follows. The creature nearly devours the Chief; he is saved when Nessie commands the creature to back down. She then orders it to spit up the treasure chest it brought and with her last ounce of strength orders it to leave.

When she recovers, Nessie finds that her family retrieved the treasure from where the Mud Gullet spat it up and are grateful that no one was killed during the attack. Nessie then breaks down and confesses to summoning the beast. The Frog Mage explains that Nessie is a Kenning prodigy and that he would like to take her to Sanctuary City for further testing. Nessie's fears about her tail's condition are unfounded as her parents explain that it'll grow back in time.

Using the money, Nessie, her older brother Jacobin, Oggy (a bog-dragon Nessie enlisted when collecting her fur tufts and kept as a pet), and her mother accompany the Frog Mage back to Sanctuary City. This sidestory eventually intersects with the main storyline around Quentyn.

After six months of side stories, we return to the main story. As promised, Kestrel is showing Quentyn around the city. Some of their stops include the Luxfont and the Archivist Guild's Central Library, where Quentyn picks up books on Questors and Questoring; they also view a display about (among other things) artifacts pertaining to those who tried and failed to take over the Seven Villages and, of most interest to Quentyn, a replica of Snakefang: the sword used by Questor Quentyn of Ridgedale, Quentyn's namesake, founder of his hometown Freeman Downs, and the hero of the tale which originally started this entire comic.

While admiring it, he lets his identity slip to a Rac Conan kit next to him who then begs him for an interview for his newspaper, ''Fact and Opinion''. His name is '''Emmet''' and he's a Soothscribe. He's fascinated by Quentyn and the paper he works on already ran a story on Quentyn's rescue of Nessie, though the artist's rendition of Quentyn was a bit off.

Emmet invites Quentyn and Kestrel to the office of ''Fact and Opinion'' so that they can update the picture of Quentyn and get his interview. Quentyn is pleasantly surprised by the unusually positive reception he gets there.

As the artist, Aislynn, is redoing the portrait of Quentyn, Emmet begins the interview. When he inquires whether or not Quentyn dyed his forelock white to match to look more like his namesake, Quentyn of Ridgedale, who had also had a white forelock, Quentyn reacts with surprise at this revelation. He hasn't dyed it and muses that he thought it was getting paler since the White Stag licked him there just before his Choosing Day.

The others are stunned at the news. Kestrel relates that the White Stag is a rare and mysterious creature as well as an important symbol of the Sojourner Church. Before settling down in what is today the Seven Villages, the Rac Conan lived in what were called the Wandering Times. During this period a White Stag led a Rac Conan to a Human Minister who was also following a White Stag. The Minister taught the Rac Conan about God and his faith and that Rac Conan became the founder of the Sojourner Church.

Emmet adds that Questor Quentyn of Ridgedale also had a white forelock and used to say that: "It must be where the White Stag licked me...."

Quentyn tries to dismiss it all as a dream, but Kestrel inquires how a dream could cause his forelock to turn white.

When the next ''Fact and Opinion'' comes out, it appears that they did not write just one article on Quentyn, but devoted the entire issue to him.

Rilcreek encourages Quentyn to use this publicity to his advantage and invites him to go to a party being held at the Hall of Flour and Grain Merchants by the Millfolk family, a very rich and powerful family of grain merchants.

As the guests draw Quentyn out into talking about himself, Lord Millfolk asks Rillcreek if he can find out why the Brownies (Gnomes) have gone. Because of this, the rats the Brownies kept in check have returned and multiplied. Rillcreek is unable to offer an explanation.

Meanwhile a young kit approaches Quentyn and after finding out that he is a Questor, falls asleep in his lap. His mother asks Quentyn not to disturb the kit as this is the first he's slept in over two days.

Quentyn tells Rillcreek that he will not be returning with him to Freeman Downs and has taken a job with the Millfolks. He explains that the Millfolks' son, '''Colin''', suffers from Night Terrors. Usually the kit's father would stay with Colin at night to dispel the Night Terrors, which manifest themselves with Lux. However, Lord Millfolk already tried staying with Colin, to no avail. Because Colin is a Questor fan, the Millfolks hope Quentyn will have more luck.

Colin is at first dejected because he doesn't think Quentyn will believe him when he says that he isn't being haunted by Night Terrors but by real monster rats. Quentyn promises that he will help Colin, no matter what it is, and wins his trust.

Quentyn spends several days at the Millfolks' Estate and several nights with Colin, but no Night Terrors appear. During that time though, he does find out several troubling things about the Millfolk family.

Lady Millfolk is often too busy for Colin. She's a working girl who married into a rich family by marrying Cole Millfolk. As such she's constantly criticized by other rich women, including her mother in law for not acting enough like a "proper" lady. She feels so pressured that she consented to listen to a doctor hired by her mother-in-law who said that she shouldn't "mother" Colin too much or go to him when he's going through the Terrors.

Lord Millfolk is an easygoing man, fair and friendly to his workers as they repair faulty Lux lines and sewer lines, and is a hero to his son. However he is going through feelings of inadequacy for not being able to help Colin with his Night Terrors.

Quentyn meanwhile goes investigating, trying to find the root of Colin's Terrors. It turns out that not only is he not afraid of rats, as Quentyn originally thought, but is in fact a fearless boy who hunted rats with the Brownies. Quentyn is unable to discover a source for Colin's Terrors.

Then one night a monster appears out of a crack in the floor, which turns out only to be a Bogey-man named '''Squidge''': a small shapeshifting creature that's essentially harmless. Squidge tells them of scary shadow rats that live down below in the sewers.

Out of the crack come a horde of black shadow rats. These are not Night Terrors, as they manage to inflict harm on Quentyn. Using Lux causes them to multiply uncontrollably. Colin figures out that they were Wights, from one of the Questor stories he read and thus vulnerable to fire.

== Origins of DMFA ==

DMFA began in 1998, when on Furcadia Amber promised a shrine of sorts to anyone who could find a particular song for her. When a friend who went by the name of Daniel Ti'Fiona found the song in question, Amber made good on her promise and created the shrine. As a joke, she added a sign proclaiming "Coming soon: the Misadventures of Daniel Ti'Fiona, the comic!" However, Daniel took this seriously and continually prodded her to actually start the comic until she finally gave in. The first comic was posted on the website in 1999.

Initially featuring Daniel and Miss Mab, the cast of the comic soon expanded, including both friends of Amber's on Furcadia and characters of her own creation. Later on in 1999, the comic fell into a hiatus for about a year. Amber resumed comic production in 2000, and the comic has been updating steadily ever since.

:A kangaroo rat/kangaroo mix, Jyrras is one of the most brilliant inventors in all of Furrae. He is rather shy and dislikes attention. Most notably, he has an aversion to being called "cute." He is credited with inventing "patches," devices that use both technology and magic to alter the users' physical appearance.

;Lorenda Soulstealer
:Lorenda is a cow/demon-mare hybrid. As such, she is carnivorous, a trait rarely seen in bovines. Since she is half-demon, she has had a hard time keeping a job. She used to work at [[wikipedia:Twink (internet slang)|Twink]] Territories, a haven for [[wikipedia:powergamer|powergamers]] and godmoders everywhere until she met Jyrras, who offered her a place to shack up in return for not devouring him. She currently lives with him near Lost Lake.

:A boisterous and devious ferret, Wildy is small compared to the rest of the cast but she is quite fierce at times, perhaps rivaled only by Pip. With a sharp tongue and a tactless demeanor, she is unafraid to speak her mind. However, she is very protective of her friends and is very open with them. She lives in an apartment away from Lost Lake, yet spends most of her time at Lost Lake.

;Alexsi Ti'Fiona
:Daniel's half-sister and fellow feline, Alexsi runs the tavern and inn known as Lost Lake. Unlike Dan, she does not possess a 'cubi heritage (Alexsi's father remarried after her biological mother's death). She is quite often seen with a comically oversized mallet (inherited from her mother) which she uses to forcibly eject unruly tavern patrons or inn customers.

;Merlitz Meshaiko
:Yet another feline cast member, Merlitz is a practicing fire mage. Currently working as Alexsi's bodyguard, over the years he has become attached to the rest of the Lost Lake denizens. Many consider him the [[wikipedia:straight man|straight man]] of the cast. He is currently dating Aaryanna, a [[wikipedia:succubus|succubus]].

;Pyroduck
:Nobody knows much about Pyroduck, not even his species, although he has revealed himself as a time-traveller. He is perhaps best known for making witty comments about the occurrences at the inn, often breaking the [[wikipedia:fourth wall|fourth wall]] in the process. Sometimes he will disappear into the countryside to explore, dropping by Lost Lake to offer his quips and comments at exactly the right time.

;Azlan
:An adventurer as well as a vulpine fae, Azlan is fun-loving and quite silly at times. Many of his appearances serve as comic relief. Azlan quickly learned that very few adventurers would take a fae seriously, so he uses a patch to alter his wings' appearance and hide his fae antennae. Azlan often tells stories of the exploits of his wife Neni, who appears to cause chaos wherever she goes. He carries around a "squeeky koala of doom," a gift from Neni.

;Aaryanna
:Merlitz encountered Aaryanna during one of the cast's many adventures. A feline succubus, Aaryanna graduated from the Succubus and Incubus Academy (SAIA) roughly 25 years ago and since then has been seeking her favorite teacher, Destania, who left SAIA on an assignment and never returned. A [[phoenix]] [[wikipedia:oracle|oracle]] led her to believe that Daniel had killed Destania, and she set out in search for Dan. A short fight ensued, but Mab forced the two to talk things out. Now that Dan's incubus side has been revealed, she has become Dan's mentor, whether he likes it or not. Aaryanna has an affinity for toast.

:A demon-mare and Lorenda's mother, Kria could be termed the stereotypical demon, as she believes that might makes right, and that the meek shall not inherit the earth. Her daughter being her one soft spot, Kria tries her best to maintain her relationship with Lorenda, despite her daughter's continuing association with those... ''lessers''.

;Biggs-san
:Wildy's brother, Biggs is the ruler of Twink Territories. Like all ferrets, Biggs is diminuitive in size but is a fearsome ruler. He has a long rivalry with Wildy, and several encounters ended violently... most with Wildy emerging triumphant.

;The Basement Rats
:Dan's roommates, the four rats have never been seen outside of the basement, yet contain a good deal of street smarts. Their names are unknown, except for the female, Photophie. The dark grey one has never been noticed awake. Although they refer to each other as "Bro" and "Sis," only Photophie and the light grey male are actually related.

;Matilda Kissriss
:A female Mythos, Matilda owns a small magical homes and knick-knack store. Some speculate that she is attracted to Daniel, citing the fact that she gave Dan an expensive sword for free as evidence.

;Dark Pegasus
:A demonic pegasus, Dark Pegasus was one of Dan's most erstwhile foes. In their most recent encounter, where Dark Pegasus attempted to overthrow the kingdom of H-ann and ressurect a dark god for the third time, he and Dan engaged in a fight to the death. Dark Pegasus was vanquished once again and Dan banished his soul by means of an ancient ritual. ("Bad Pegasus! No come back to life! Stay dead! No cookie!!!")

;Abel
:Like Dan, Abel is a feline incubus. Unlike Dan, Abel has fully embraced his cubi heritage and is one of the top students at SAIA. Abel has been banned from the SAIA library due to the "Library Incident." (Much like the "Noodle Incident" of [[wikipedia:Calvin and Hobbes|Calvin and Hobbes]] fame, it has never been described yet it has been referenced on occasion.) He has also been hell for the rooming assigners, who have to find him new roommates as often as once a semester.

;Aliyka
:A phoenix (but not the flaming type) and a natural arbitrator, Aliyka is an odd combination of adventurer and peace advocate. Therefore, she is usually hired as a messenger rather than an adventurer.

;Fa'lina
:A canine succubus with a love for muffins, Fa'lina is the headmistress of SAIA, which she founded several thousand years ago.

;Deathbringer
:The result of one of Jyrras' experiments. A bit of magical energy reacted with some bubblegum Jyrras was chewing to form a pink, rabbit-shaped, sentient bubblegum-being. In an ill-advised move, Jyrras allowed her to pick her own name. She chose "Deathbringer" since it sounded cool. Most simply call her "Deebs."

;Edward Ti'Fiona
:The previous owner of Lost Lake, Edward is Alexsi and Dan's father. He protected an injured Destania when a band of adventurers at the tavern threatened to kill the succubus, knowing full well that he risked his life in doing so. However, Edward and Destania fell in love, married, and had a baby boy named Daniel.

;Destania
:A former professor at SAIA, Destania left SAIA on an assignment. She had been attacked during the assignment and stumbled upon Lost Lake. The rest is history.

;The Mows
:Although not really characters in their own right, the mows still must be mentioned for sake of authenticity. Mows appear to have been created accidentally during an insane experiment by two of Jyrras' assistants in his absence (as documented in strip #363). Mows are practically indestructable, although generally harmless. They appear to feed on organic material, chiefly cloth. Their one weapon is the ability to latch onto something and buzz their wings quickly, effectively simulating the feeling of that limb falling asleep.

::I do need to point out, though, that Burned Fur was never, at any time, "anti furry". We were anti-bad-press. Our entire point was that using common sense and a little discretion would solve pretty much the entire problem. We did not advocate "running people out of the fandom". But there are easily a dozen posts to WikiFur alleging various acts or intents on our part which exist only in the minds of those making the allegations.

::For example, the section on FAASA refers to that group's desire to "remove bestialists and zoophiles from Furry Fandom", then goes on to suggest the problem FAASA raises is one of "sinful" activities --- as opposed to out and out illegal activities, which bestiality and zoophilia are. There's no issue of "sin" here; it's a crime being talked about. For that matter, Burned Fur never talks about "sin" at all nor does it couch any of its arguments in religious terms, yet the article on FAASA claims that "all Anti-Furries" of the period shared the religious angle. In the following section, both FAASA and Burned Fur are specifically listed as Anti-Furry (as opposed to just being referred to in the previous link) --- which is essentially an advocation that bestiality and zoophilia ARE part and parcel of Furry Fandom.

::I will state, however, that complaints were in fact lodged with the Alt.* hierarchy regarding alt.lifestyle.furry, expressly because threads promoting the bestiality and zoophile lifestyles appeared there. The promotion of illegal activities is against the Usenet charter, so we simply informed the Usenet authorities that the system was being abused. They warned the posters, who took down the thread, and that was that...just as it's supposed to work whenever anyone anywhere on the Usenet abuses it to promote illegality. No one contacted any carriers to have the group yanked, and it would have been an extensive waste of time and effort to even try calling a tiny percentage of the necessary carriers.

Manawolf's linked "counteressay" starts right off attacking "hate and intolerance" --- against bestiality and zoophilia.

This is not a case of just getting them to be more discreet. It is a case of not associating with them at all.

I will remind you that I did not claim that Burned Furs were "tolerant" of those things they spoke against. I specifically said they were not. And no, I have not said that there was not a desire for certain people to leave the fandom. If I believe a President should be impeached for specific reasons, this does not amount to anything wrong --- it is simply my opinion. Even if I call for other people to join me in that impeachment call, neither is that wrong. We are not talking about a lynch mob here.

"Not associating" with the aforementioned people neither created nor solved the problem. The problem was that many furries found themselves hounded from the fandom by their friends, family, and sometimes even their employers, because of the poor word of mouth --- and later, press coverage --- the fandom obtained. Every scrap of that bad coverage and poor word of mouth has concerned people who refuse to be discreet in their sexual lifestyles. Going right back to your own quote of Squee Rat, I note that "expelling every last wacko from the fan base" comes up as a matter of idle fantasy, not a matter of actual intent. Sure, and I'd like to see the Republican and Democrat Parties as a whole rise up and throw out all the scumbags, but I don't think you're about to suggest that I'm going to base a political movement on this premise.

The simple fact is that, if Furries with alternate lifestyles did not try to press upon the rest of the world just exactly what their lifestyles ARE, there would not be a problem.

And why do ANY of us HAVE to know? It was never my business to know that the friendly gryphon down the street masturbates to Road Rover pics off the Internet, so if he MAKES it my business, do I not have the right to be offended? Why am I not allowed to accept someone without having to know that he swings both ways and screws a stuffed pig named Mimi on Saturdays? This is the problem --- there are people in the fandom who are not satisfied with having a sexual lifestyle different from others. For these people, it must be made public, and more importantly must be ACCEPTED, as though my opinion meant a damn to him in the first place. And if I don't accept, if I have any kind of problem with any given thing he does, I'M the one attacked for being "hateful".

I may have wound up clipping it out, but I thought I noted that bestiality is not yet illegal in a handful of states. Nonetheless, it does not have to be universally illegal for it to be opposed where appropriate. The reason I included the term "zoophilia" is because the original article defended it under the same terms as bestiality, and in zoo circles the two terms are often interchangeable.

That said, it's also a fact that one can be a zoophile and NOT break any laws. Drawing a picture of a man raping a sheep isn't illegal, for instance. Nor is selling it. As long as the animal in question is entirely fictitious, no laws are being broken. Of course, the same is true of someone who draws pictures of babies being strangled. If someone is offended by any of this, they certainly have the right to voice their disapproval. That is neither censorship nor fascism of any stripe, but FAASA and BFs were routinely accused of such by their opposition.

I mention Manawolf, and her views, because they are directly linked right from the FAASA article, and presented as a core point of the opposition to FAASA.

I'm sorry, but that's not a logical statement and must be taken out of context to effect the meaning you seem to wish to attribute. What Manawolf said, specifically, was that bestiality and zoophilia should be understood AND ACCEPTED. You cannot make an "effort" to "accept" something; either you do or you don't. I cannot make an "effort" to enjoy refried beans or asparagus. The only thing I can do is make an "effort" to wolf them down and try not to taste them while I'm at it. You can eventually change your mind as to what you will or won't accept, but if my opinion in FAVOR of bestiality would be respected, then my opinion AGAINST bestiality should likewise be respected, even if not agreed with, and Manawolf has made clear she does not respect any opinion which does not approve of it.

Manawolf certainly has every right to call for a revisitation of the issue, and make her case, and if she does not convince enough people that the law should be changed, then she has lost and that's that. To date, she has not won her case, but you seem to be suggesting that until she does, I should act as though she already has.

There can be no legitimate comparison of homosexuality and bestiality for this singular reason: animals are not sapient, and as such cannot give consent. Manawolf's argument, that an animal can indicate a desire for sex (and thus consent) ignores the fact that a human child may do the same and yet remain legally incapable of giving consent. The capacity for consent is not based in law upon whether or not someone is technically capable of signaling a desire for it --- it is based on the presumption that a person will, over time, develop the capacity to use calculated judgement in deciding where, when and how they will have sex. Animals never develop that calculated judgement, and thus cannot give consent.

Thus, bestiality will always be exactly what it is: abuse of animals for sexual gratification, and animal abuse should not be tolerated. If society is to say differently 60 years down the road, fine, but society does not say that now, nor does the law where applicable.

'''''Badly Drawn Kitties (BDK)''''' in an online [[furry]] [[web comic]], which as the title suggests, features [[cat]]s and is, in theory, badly drawn; however, the artist himself admits it is not as badly drawn as it once was. The comic was created by [[Mat Sherer]], and stars a couple of [[anthropomorphic]] cats named Lucy and Lydia, who share an apartment in the fictional country of New Talia, a small island nation off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

An adult-themed comic, sex plays a major role in many strips, whether it is actually occuring, implied, or the subject of a joke. There is nudity in the comic, but due to the simplistic art it is not very graphic. Recently, the comic has focused less on sex, but it is still an important part of the comic.

The comic has had various release schedules in its run, but is currently updated every Monday, Wednesday and Friday; Keenspace permitting.

She has routinely tried to get her roommate Lydia to have sex with her, but she refuses; Lucy has since stopped trying due to Lydia's relationship with Dirk, and her own with Jezzebel.

She has lived in New Talia for the last few years after moving from Atlanta, Georgia; and currently works as an editor for Sonica, a music magazine. She originally worked there as their harshest, most vicious music critic; Lucy also composed music for some of Zig Zag's movies, wrote songs and produced an album for a band, and even appeared as a professional wrestler's on-air girlfriend.

A white cat with black hair, and Lucy's childhood friend, she works at the ''White Cat'' tattoo, fur dying and body piercing parlor. Lydia is totally straight—although she once thought she might have been bisexual—and resists Lucy's come-ons. It's at work that she met her boyfriend, Dirk who was in getting a body piercing. On October 18, 2004, Dirk asked her to marry him, and on August 31, 2005, they were married.

===Dirk===

Dirk is a male cat who came into Lydia's parlor for some body piercing, specifically his scrotum; when Lydia saw his "equipment", she was immediately enamoured by him. He currently runs his own music store. During the ''New Talian Idol'' incident, Lydia and Dirk got in a fight when Lucy tried to use him to get some of her co-workers off her back, but things got a little too comfy, and Lydia got a little too jealous. After a while, they got back together. They married on August 31, 2005. Jay Naylor came up with the name ''Dirk Savagewood'', because it sounded like a good name for a porn actor.

===Fisk===

Fisk is Lucy's twin brother, and they have been in an incestuous relationship since before they came to New Talia. At first Fisk worked as a security guard for Zig Zag, but after a while, moved back to the U.S. and joined the army, following in his father's footsteps. Sadly, Fisk also followed his father's footsteps right into his grave; his father died in the Vietnam War, and Fisk was killed in Iraq.

Fisk was created by Jay Naylor, and was friends with Mat for a time; so Fisk was included in BDK, while Lucy appears in Jay's comic, ''[[Better Days]]''. The two had a falling out, which would explain Fisk's lack of presence in the comic, and his death. Lucy still appears in ''Better Days''.

===Jezzebel===

A bat with one eye; she is Fisk's former girlfriend, and now Lucy's girlfriend. Lucy first meets Jezzebel when they are buying birthday presents for Fisk; at said party, they are formally introduced. When Fisk gets drunk, Lucy offers Jezzebel a ride home, one thing led to another, and Lucy woke up in Jezzebel's bed. Shortly after Lucy returned to Sonica, Jezzebel and Lucy started dating. She works in Sonica's mail room.

===Zig Zag===

A skunk with a distinctive tiger-stripe pattern, [[Zig Zag (furry)|Zig Zag]] is the owner and star of Double Z Studios, an adult film studio, and is the creation of Max BlackRabbit. For a while she and Lucy dated. With both of them being almost totally promiscuous, it seemed like a perfect match; even though Lucy still made out with Fisk, and Zig Zag still made out with almost anybody with a pulse. When Lucy lost her job at Sonica over the ''New Talian Idol'' incident, Zig Zag offered her a job composing music for her movies. After Lucy was rehired at Sonica, the two have drifted apart. They are still friends but are no longer dating; Lucy says it's because of Zig Zag's eye for Double Z's [[Sabrina Online|web mistress]].

===Desi===

A black cat who was once Lucy's boss at Sonica. She was the one who pegged Lucy for the host position on ''New Talian Idol'', and she received a hairspray enema for her trouble. When Lucy was rehired at Sonica, Desi was demoted for causing the whole mess, and Lucy was now her boss. It was too much for Desi, and later on she quit. Desi now hosts ''New Talian Idol''.

===Dirk's Parents===

Dirk's parents show up just in time for his and Lydia's wedding. They are divorced, and it seems they are not from North America—or at least his father isn't—as there is a reference to "football" being the same as "soccer". Dirk's father's name is Kirk, and his mother's name is Carol.

===Linda===

Dirk's sister, who has been in England for the last five years. When Lucy tried to get Dirk and Lydia back together, she found him with another woman, not knowing that it was his sister. Unlike Lucy and Fisk, there is nothing more to their relationship.

An annoying cat who appears every now and then when Mat can't come up with a good way to end a comic, usually by making some stupid comment on the current goings on, or doing something completely irreverent; as such, she often talks to the audience directly, breaking the [[fourth wall]]. Unlike the other characters, Lola takes the shape of a normal cat.

One time when Mat was feeling down, Amber, creator of [[Dan and Mab's Furry Adventures]] kidnapped Lola and threatened to change her into a succubus if Mat didn't pay her a ransom of jellybeans, but no licorice ones. Lucy's answer was to kidnap all of DMFA's mows, which proved disastrous, and Amber turned Lola into a succubus. She is now promising much revenge on Mat.

Lydia takes very much after her mother, right down to their inability to drink alcohol—both get drunk whenever the slightest bit touches their lips. Ironically, Lydia's father looks like an older version of Dirk, although this could be the result of Mat's simplistic art style leaving little room for character variation. Lydia's mother's name is Delia, while her father's name was recently retconned to "Charles"; it was originally given as "Albert".

===Mat===

The author of the comic. Mat inserts himself occasionally when there is need to talk about the direction the comic is going. In real life, Mat works at a Pizza Hut, loves music, and was a professional wrestling fan, though horribly disappointed by it now. Mat isn't really a part of the comic continuity, and often speaks to the audience directly, breaking the [[fourth wall]].

===Nikashi===

A friend of Dirk's who works at his record store. He's also Sally's boyfriend.

===Sally===

A heavily tattooed woman who works with Lydia. In a Halloween strip, it is revealed she is actually a carnivorous demon from the depths of Hell, who knew? It's unknown if her boyfriend, Nikashi knows.

===Sheila===

Lucy and Fisk's mother, she has appeared frequently through the comic. Even though she often asks Lucy if she's got a boyfriend, she suspects that her daughter is gay; she accepts her daughter is bisexual, but Sheila hopes that Lucy will at least get a boyfriend and mother a child at some point.

===Snow===

A pet ferret that Lucy bought Lydia during her break-up with Dirk. Lydia named her ''Snow'' (short for ''Snowball'') because her fur is completely white, a la Snow White.

===Vincent Rann===

The president of Ranntech, he is a billionaire who bought Sonica magazine. Shortly after, he tried to sue Lucy for $1.5 million for damages related to the ''New Talian Idol'' incident. Lucy countersued, forcing an out of court settlement. Rann didn't like that he had to bow down at all, and has tried various schemes to make her life a living hell.

==The New Talian Idol Incident==

''New Talian Idol'' is a parody of ''American Idol'' and is the closest thing to an epic story to appear in BDK; of all plot lines and story arcs in BDK, this was the biggest and affected the most people.

===New Talian Idol===

In Late 2002/Early 2003, ''Sonica Magazine'' signed a deal with ''New Reality Studios'' to produce a home-grown version of ''American Idol''. On January 21, 2003, Desi gives the assignment of hosting ''New Talian Idol'' to venom-tongued critic Lucy, who utterly despises ''American Idol'', thinking she'd be the perfect Simon Cowell-esque host.

On March 17, 2003, Lucy arrives on the set of ''New Talian Idol'', and meets the two people that she and Desi are working with. '''Buck''' is the producer and is so vain that he thinks every girl secretly wants to make out with him, constantly joking with lines like "Sorry, but I'm already married". '''Jack''' is Lucy's co-host, and is attracted to Lucy, but he has a nasty habit of saying things that he thinks are compliments, but are actually insulting.

:At this point, the comic drones on about some other stuff, primarily flashbacks from Lucy to delay the continuation of ''New Talian Idol''.

On May 19, 2003, Lucy returns to the set for taping of ''New Talian Idol'', were she is confronted with Buck and Jack again; sadly her annoyance over the whole deal is quite pronounced, making her seem like the perfect "Simon Cowell". As a result, Lucy loses her job, and reluctantly goes to Zig Zag looking for another job; thankfully getting one that doesn't involve what she is or isn't wearing. Dirk and Lydia break-up over the incident where he and Lucy pretended to be lovers. Meanwhile Sonica is left footing the bill over ''New Talian Idol'', and is forced to pay damages to ''New Reality Studios'' for breaching their contract.

April 27, 2004, Lucy receives a notice in the mail that she is being sued 1.5 million New Talian Dollars—roughly 900,000 USD according to Lola—because she walked out on ''New Talian Idol'', and Sonica was left to foot the damages. It turns out Sonica was bought by a company called Ranntech, and its owner, Vincent Rann is looking to make as much money off it as possible. When Lucy mentions it to Zig Zag, she gets her lawyer to look into it; apparently Zig Zag had a run in with Rann and would love to tie his legal knickers in a knot. The meeting with the lawyer goes well, and Lucy countersues Sonica on grounds of wrongful dismissal.

Knowing that Lucy is in the right and would likely win the suit, Mr. Rann's lawyer comes up with a solution: if they both drop their lawsuits, Sonica hires Lucy back as an editor; that way she's working for Rann and making him money, or if she steps out of line he can fire her legitimately. Meanwhile, Desi gets punished for causing the whole fiasco.

In the end, Lucy gets the job she wanted, but she is now in the sights of Vincent Rann, who is waiting for a chance to trip her up. Desi despises working under Lucy, but eventually gets a new job, hosting the new ''New Talian Idol''; Lucy thinks this is fitting punishment, not realizing there are people who like the Idol concept. Also, Lucy finds out that Jezzebel works in Sonica's mail room; soon after, they start dating.

The comic was created by [[Mat Sherer]], and stars a couple of [[anthropomorphic]] cats named Lucy and Lydia, who share an apartment in the fictional country of New Talia, a small island nation off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

An adult-themed comic, sex plays a major role in many strips, either actually occuring, being implied, or having some joke related to it. There is nudity in the comic, but due to the simplistic art it is not very graphic. Recently, the comic has focused less on sex, but it is still an important part of the comic.

The comic has had various release schedules in its run, but is currently updated every Monday, Wednesday and Friday; Keenspace permitting.

Fisk is Lucy's twin brother, and they have been in an incestuous relationship since before they came to New Talia. At first Fisk worked as a security guard for Zig Zag, but after a while, moved back to the U.S. and joined the army, following in his father's footsteps. Sadly, Fisk also followed his father's footsteps right into his grave; his father died in the Vietnam War, and Fisk was killed in Iraq.

Fisk was created by Jay Naylor, and was friends with Mat for a time; so Fisk was included in BDK, while Lucy appears in Jay's comic, ''[[Better Days]]''. The two had a falling out, which would explain Fisk's lack of presence in the comic, and his death. Lucy still appears in ''Better Days''.

A bat with one eye; she is Fisk's former girlfriend, and now Lucy's girlfriend. Lucy first meets Jezzebel when they are buying birthday presents for Fisk; at said party, they are formally introduced. A skunk with a distinctive tiger-stripe pattern, [[Zig Zag (furry)|Zig Zag]] is the owner and star of Double Z Studios, an adult film studio, and is the creation of Max BlackRabbit. For a while she and Lucy dated. With both of them being almost totally promiscuous, it seemed like a perfect match; even though Lucy still made out with Fisk, and Zig Zag still made out with almost anybody with a pulse. When Lucy lost her job at Sonica over the ''New Talian Idol'' incident, Zig Zag offered her a job composing music for her movies. After Lucy was rehired at Sonica, the two have drifted apart. They are still friends but are no longer dating; Lucy says it's because of Zig Zag's eye for Double Z's [[Sabrina Online|web mistress]].

Dirk's sister, who has been in England for the last five years. When Lucy tried to get Dirk and Lydia back together, she found him with another woman, not knowing that it was his sister. Unlike Lucy and Fisk, there is nothing more to their relationship.

An annoying cat who appears every now and then when Mat can't come up with a good way to end a comic, usually by making some stupid comment on the current goings on, or doing something completely irreverent; as such, she often talks to the audience directly, breaking the [[fourth wall]]. Unlike the other characters, Lola takes the shape of a normal cat.

One time when Mat was feeling down, Amber, creator of [[Dan and Mab's Furry Adventures]] kidnapped Lola and threatened to change her into a succubus if Mat didn't pay her a ransom of jellybeans, but no licorice ones. Lucy's answer was to kidnap all of DMFA's mows, which proved disastrous, and Amber turned Lola into a succubus. She is now promising much revenge on Mat.

Lydia's mother's name is Delia, while her father's name was recently retconned to "Charles"; it was originally given as "Albert".

The author of the comic. Mat inserts himself occasionally when there is need to talk about the direction the comic is going. In real life, Mat works at a Pizza Hut, loves music, and was a professional wrestling fan, though horribly disappointed by it now. Mat isn't really a part of the comic continuity, and often speaks to the audience directly, breaking the [[fourth wall]].

A friend of Dirk's who works at his record store. He's also Sally's boyfriend.

A pet ferret that Lucy bought Lydia during her break-up with Dirk. Lydia named her ''Snow'' (short for ''Snowball'') because her fur is completely white, a la Snow White.

The president of Ranntech, he is a billionaire who bought Sonica magazine. Shortly after, he tried to sue Lucy for $1.5 million for damages related to the ''New Talian Idol'' incident. Lucy countersued, forcing an out of court settlement. Rann didn't like that he had to bow down at all, and has tried various schemes to make her life a living hell.

==The New Talian Idol Incident==

''New Talian Idol'' is a parody of ''American Idol'' and is the closest thing to an epic story to appear in BDK; of all plot lines and story arcs in BDK, this was the biggest and affected the most people.

===New Talian Idol===

In Late 2002/Early 2003, ''Sonica Magazine'' signed a deal with ''New Reality Studios'' to produce a home-grown version of ''American Idol''. On January 21, 2003, Desi gives the assignment of hosting ''New Talian Idol'' to venom-tongued critic Lucy, who utterly despises ''American Idol'', thinking she'd be the perfect Simon Cowell-esque host.

On March 17, 2003, Lucy arrives on the set of ''New Talian Idol'', and meets the two people that she and Desi are working with. '''Buck''' is the producer and is so vain that he thinks every girl secretly wants to make out with him, constantly joking with lines like "Sorry, but I'm already married". '''Jack''' is Lucy's co-host, and is attracted to Lucy, but he has a nasty habit of saying things that he thinks are compliments, but are actually insulting.

A pet ferret that Lucy bought Lydia during her break-up with Dirk. Lydia named her ''Snow'' (short for ''Snowball'') because her fur is completely white, a la Snow White.

The president of Ranntech, he is a billionaire who bought Sonica magazine. Shortly after, he tried to sue Lucy for $1.5 million for damages related to the ''New Talian Idol'' incident. Lucy countersued, forcing an out of court settlement. Rann didn't like that he had to bow down at all, and has tried various schemes to make her life a living hell.

''New Talian Idol'' is a parody of ''American Idol'' and is the closest thing to an epic story to appear in BDK; of all plot lines and story arcs in BDK, this was the biggest and affected the most people.

===New Talian Idol===

In Late 2002/Early 2003, ''Sonica Magazine'' signed a deal with ''New Reality Studios'' to produce a home-grown version of ''American Idol''. On January 21, 2003, Desi gives the assignment of hosting ''New Talian Idol'' to venom-tongued critic Lucy, who utterly despises ''American Idol'', thinking she'd be the perfect Simon Cowell-esque host.

On March 17, 2003, Lucy arrives on the set of ''New Talian Idol'', and meets the two people that she and Desi are working with. '''Buck''' is the producer and is so vain that he thinks every girl secretly wants to make out with him, constantly joking with lines like "Sorry, but I'm already married". '''Jack''' is Lucy's co-host, and is attracted to Lucy, but he has a nasty habit of saying things that he thinks are compliments, but are actually insulting.

:At this point, the comic drones on about some other stuff, primarily flashbacks from Lucy to delay the continuation of ''New Talian Idol''.

On May 19, 2003, Lucy returns to the set for taping of ''New Talian Idol'', were she is confronted with Buck and Jack again; sadly her annoyance over the whole deal is quite pronounced, making her seem like the perfect "Simon Cowell". She goes to Lydia for help and gets a makeover, trying to act nicer. When it seems that Jack is coming on to her, she tells him she's a lesbian, but he seems unphased; worse, it draws even more unwanted attention from Buck. This leads to her changing her story and saying she has a boyfriend, and uses Dirk to try and throw Buck and Jack off; but Dirk acts a little too cozy with Lucy and Lydia accuses him of philandering. All this fails, and Buck simply uses it to promote Lucy as a lesbian caricature on the show.

During the show, Lucy realizes that the only way out of this is to simply daydream and ignore the show completely. Buck mentions to Desi that Lucy doesn't seem as volatile as she described, but Desi says that the next act will bring out the worst in her. The next song is the most horrible thing in the world, that dreaded Céline Dion song from Titanic.

:After a brief repose to celebrate Canada Day and Independence Day, we return to ''New Talian Idol'' where...

Lucy goes totally off the deep end. She berates the whole show for taking people who may have real talent and squandering it on useless pop tunes; she blasts Jack for constantly eyeing her and Buck for his egotistical delusions, then storms off to her dressing room promising a hairspray enema to the first person she sees. That person happens to be Desi, who orders Lucy to go back out there, saying that it's just another assignment and is part of her job at Sonica, ignorant of the can of hairspray Lucy is now shaking. When Desi tells her to do the show or she's fired, Lucy leaves, giving Desi the payback she deserves.

As a result, Lucy loses her job, and reluctantly goes to Zig Zag looking for another job; thankfully getting one that doesn't involve what she is or isn't wearing. Dirk and Lydia break-up over the incident where he and Lucy pretended to be lovers. Meanwhile Sonica is left footing the bill over ''New Talian Idol'', and is forced to pay damages to ''New Reality Studios'' for breaching their contract.

===Aftermath===

April 27, 2004, Lucy receives a notice in the mail that she is being sued 1.5 million New Talian Dollars—roughly 900,000 USD according to Lola—because she walked out on ''New Talian Idol'', and Sonica was left to foot the damages. It turns out Sonica was bought by a company called Ranntech, and its owner, Vincent Rann is looking to make as much money off it as possible. When Lucy mentions it to Zig Zag, she gets her lawyer to look into it; apparently Zig Zag had a run in with Rann and would love to tie his legal knickers in a knot. The meeting with the lawyer goes well, and Lucy countersues Sonica on grounds of wrongful dismissal.

Knowing that Lucy is in the right and would likely win the suit, Mr. Rann's lawyer comes up with a solution: if they both drop their lawsuits, Sonica hires Lucy back as an editor; that way she's working for Rann and making him money, or if she steps out of line he can fire her legitimately. Meanwhile, Desi gets punished for causing the whole fiasco.

In the end, Lucy gets the job she wanted, but she is now in the sights of Vincent Rann, who is waiting for a chance to trip her up. Desi despises working under Lucy, but eventually gets a new job, hosting the new ''New Talian Idol''; Lucy thinks this is fitting punishment, not realizing there are people who like the Idol concept. Also, Lucy finds out that Jezzebel works in Sonica's mail room; soon after, they start dating.

==Recent Changes==

* Lucy and Lydia became—or filed to become—New Talian citizens on November 3, 2004, in response to the reelection of George W. Bush as president of the United States; up to that point they were still American citizens. It's an obvious spoof of liberals and Democrats who threatened to move to Canada if Bush was reelected.

* Fisk was killed in Iraq. Sheila received a $3 million insurance payoff; she gave half to Lucy, and is planning to move to New Talia.

* Lucy tries her hand in the professional wrestling circuit as a wrestler's girlfriend, whose bit is to kick guys in the crotch; her wrestling name is ''Monica Sweet''. The promoter fires her when he feels there's no place for her, prompting Lucy to kick one last guy in the crotch.

An adult-themed comic, sex plays a major role in many strips, either actually occuring, being implied, or having some joke related to it. There is [[nudity]] in the comic, but due to the simplistic art it is not very graphic. Recently, the comic has focused less on sex, but it is still an important part of the comic.

The comic has had various release schedules in its run, but is currently updated every Monday, Wednesday and Friday; [[Keenspace]] permitting.

She has lived in New Talia for the last few years after moving from Atlanta, Georgia; and currently works as an editor for Sonica, a music magazine. She originally worked there as their harshest, most vicious music critic; Lucy also composed music for some of Zig Zag's movies, wrote songs and produced an album for a band, and even appeared as a [[professional wrestling|professional wrestler]]'s on-air girlfriend.

A white cat with black hair, and Lucy's childhood friend, she works at the ''White Cat'' tattoo, fur dying and body piercing parlor. Lydia is originally from Atlanta, and followed Lucy to New Talia where they share an apartment. Lydia is totally straight—although she once thought she might have been bisexual—and resists Lucy's come-ons. It's at work that she met her boyfriend, Dirk who was in getting a body piercing. On [[October 18]], [[2004]], Dirk asked her to marry him, and on [[August 31]], [[2005]], they were married.

===Dirk===

Dirk is a male cat who came into Lydia's parlor for some body piercing, specifically his scrotum; when Lydia saw his "equipment", she was immediately enamoured by him. He currently runs his own music store. During the ''New Talian Idol'' incident, Lydia and Dirk got in a fight when Lucy tried to use him to get some of her co-workers off her back, but things got a little too comfy, and Lydia got a little too jealous. After a while, they got back together. They married on August 31, 2005. Jay Naylor came up with the name ''Dirk Savagewood'', because it sounded like a good name for a porn actor.

===Fisk===

Fisk is Lucy's twin brother, and they have been in an incestuous relationship since before they came to New Talia. At first Fisk worked as a security guard for Zig Zag, but after a while, moved back to the U.S. and joined the army, following in his father's footsteps. Sadly, Fisk also followed his father's footsteps right into his grave; his father died in [[Vietnam War|Vietnam]], and Fisk was killed in [[2003 invasion of Iraq|Iraq]].

Fisk was created by Jay Naylor, and was friends with Mat for a time; so Fisk was included in BDK, while Lucy appears in Jay's comic, ''[[Better Days (webcomic)|Better Days]]''. The two had a falling out, which would explain Fisk's lack of presence in the comic, and his death. Lucy still appears in ''Better Days''.

'''Dan and Mab's Furry Adventures''' (or '''DMFA''') is a [[furry]] [[web comic]] by [[Amber Panyko]]. It is divided into arcs (subplots) of variable length. It updates three times a week, normally on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The first 5 arcs are in black and white. Starting in the middle of the 6th arc, the comic has been in color. The comic is partially based off of the online game [[Furcadia]] and several of the main characters are based off of the artist's friends on Furcadia.

== Origins of DMFA ==

DMFA began in 1998, when on Furcadia Amber promised a shrine of sorts to anyone who could find a particular song for her. When a friend who went by the name of Daniel Ti'Fiona found the song in question, Amber made good on her promise and created the shrine. As a joke, she added a sign proclaiming "Coming soon: the Misadventures of Daniel Ti'Fiona, the comic!" However, Daniel took this seriously and continually prodded her to actually start the comic until she finally gave in. The first comic was posted on the website in 1999.

Initially featuring Daniel and Miss Mab, the cast of the comic soon expanded, including both friends of Amber's on Furcadia and characters of her own creation. Later on in 1999, the comic fell into a hiatus for about a year. Amber resumed comic production in 2000, and the comic has been updating steadily ever since.

== Plot ==
The comic's arcs revolve around the adventures and misadventures of the cast. Most of these exploits are whimsical and humorous, sometimes parodizing aspects of [[popular culture]]. Most events occur in a fictional land called Furrae; specifically, in an inn/pub called Lost Lake (based off of the real Lost Lake in Furcadia).

===Main Characters===

;Daniel Ti'Fiona
:A retired feline adventurer, Daniel is one of the main characters of the comic. He loves [[ale]] and has a strong fascination for [[Amazons]]. It has been revealed that Dan is an [[incubus]]. Currently, he is struggling to come to terms with his 'cubi heritage at the Succubus and Incubus Academy (SAIA) with the 'assistance' of Abel and Fa'lina. He resides in the basement of his sister's tavern and inn, Lost Lake.

;Miss Mab
:Mab is a feline [[fae]]. Usually a whimsical, happy-go-lucky character, Mab has a penchant for hugging anything and everything within reach. In fact, she possesses a list of "Things to Hug." However, don't get her angry. She once blew up an entire glen when aggravated. Apparently thousands of years old, Mab used to live in a distant Fae kingdom, although she left for unknown reasons.

;Pipclideous Dominiscus
:Simply nicknamed 'Pip,' he is a golden [[drake]] owned by Miss Mab. Easily angered and quite fierce, Pip will often attack anyone that comes within lunging distance, with biting as his preferred method of attack. He especially targets Dan and photographers.

;Jyrras Gianna
:A kangaroo rat/kangaroo mix, Jyrras is one of the most brilliant inventors in all of Furrae. He is rather shy and dislikes attention. Most notably, he has an aversion to being called "cute." As a result, he wears glasses (although he doesn't need them) to create a nerdy visage rather than a cute one. He is credited with inventing "patches," devices that use both technology and magic to alter the users' physical appearance.

;Lorenda Soulstealer
:Lorenda is a cow/demon-mare hybrid. As such, she is carnivorous, a trait rarely seen in bovines. Since she is half-demon, she has had a hard time keeping a job. She used to work at [[Twink Territories]], a haven for [[powergamer]]s and [[godmoder]]s everywhere until she met Jyrras, who offered her a place to shack up in return for not devouring him. She currently lives with him near Lost Lake.

;Wildy-san
:A boisterous and devious ferret, Wildy is small compared to the rest of the cast but she is quite fierce at times, perhaps rivaled only by Pip. With a sharp tongue and a tactless demeanor, she is unafraid to speak her mind. However, she is very protective of her friends and is very open with them. She lives in an apartment away from Lost Lake, yet spends most of her time at Lost Lake.

;Alexsi Ti'Fiona
:Daniel's half-sister and fellow feline, Alexsi runs the tavern and inn known as Lost Lake. Unlike Dan, she does not possess a 'cubi heritage (Alexsi's father remarried after her biological mother's death). She is quite often seen with a comically oversized mallet (inherited from her mother) which she uses to forcibly eject unruly tavern patrons or inn customers.

;Merlitz Meshaiko
:Yet another feline cast member, Merlitz is a practicing fire mage. Currently working as Alexsi's bodyguard, over the years he has become attached to the rest of the Lost Lake denizens. Many consider him the [[straight man]] of the cast. He is currently dating Aaryanna, a [[succubus]].

;Pyroduck
:Nobody knows much about Pyroduck, not even his species, although he has revealed himself as a time-traveller. He is perhaps best known for making witty comments about the occurrences at the inn, often breaking the [[fourth wall]] in the process. Sometimes he will disappear into the countryside to explore, dropping by Lost Lake to offer his quips and comments at exactly the right time.

;Azlan
:An adventurer as well as a vulpine fae, Azlan is fun-loving and quite silly at times. Many of his appearances serve as comic relief. Azlan quickly learned that very few adventurers would take a fae seriously, so he uses a patch to alter his wings' appearance and hide his fae antennae. Azlan often tells stories of the exploits of his wife Neni, who appears to cause chaos wherever she goes. He carries around a "squeeky koala of doom," a gift from Neni.

;Aaryanna
:Merlitz encountered Aaryanna during one of the cast's many adventures. A feline succubus, Aaryanna graduated from the Succubus and Incubus Academy (SAIA) roughly 25 years ago and since then has been seeking her favorite teacher, Destania, who left SAIA on an assignment and never returned. A [[phoenix]] [[oracle]] led her to believe that Daniel had killed Destania, and she set out in search for Dan. A short fight ensued, but Mab forced the two to talk things out. Now that Dan's incubus side has been revealed, she has become Dan's mentor, whether he likes it or not. Aaryanna has an affinity for toast.

===Secondary Characters===

;Kria Soulstealer
:A demon-mare and Lorenda's mother, Kria could be termed the stereotypical demon, as she believes that might makes right, and that the meek shall not inherit the earth. Before she discovered that she was pregnant with Lorenda, Kria devoured her husband after she discovered him cheating on her. Her daughter being her one soft spot, Kria tries her best to maintain her relationship with Lorenda, despite her daughter's continuing association with those... ''lessers''.

;Biggs-san
:Wildy's brother, Biggs is the ruler of Twink Territories. Like all ferrets, Biggs is diminuitive in size but is a fearsome ruler. He has a long rivalry with Wildy, and several encounters ended violently... most with Wildy emerging triumphant.

;The Basement Rats
:Dan's roommates, the four rats have never been seen outside of the basement, yet contain a good deal of street smarts. Their names are unknown, except for the female, Photophie. The dark grey one has never been noticed awake. Although they refer to each other as "Bro" and "Sis," only Photophie and the light grey male are actually related.

;Matilda Kissriss
:A female Mythos, Matilda owns a small magical homes and knick-knack store. Some speculate that she is attracted to Daniel, citing the fact that she gave Dan an expensive sword for free as evidence.

;Dark Pegasus
:A demonic pegasus, Dark Pegasus was one of Dan's most erstwhile foes. In their most recent encounter, where Dark Pegasus attempted to overthrow the kingdom of H-ann and ressurect a dark god for the third time, he and Dan engaged in a fight to the death. Dark Pegasus was vanquished once again and Dan banished his soul by means of an ancient ritual. ("Bad Pegasus! No come back to life! Stay dead! No cookie!!!")

;Abel
:Like Dan, Abel is a feline incubus. Unlike Dan, Abel has fully embraced his cubi heritage and is one of the top students at SAIA. Abel has been banned from the SAIA library due to the "Library Incident." (Much like the "Noodle Incident" of [[Calvin and Hobbes]] fame, it has never been described yet it has been referenced on occasion.) He has also been hell for the rooming assigners, who have to find him new roommates as often as once a semester.

;Aliyka
:A phoenix (but not the flaming type) and a natural arbitrator, Aliyka is an odd combination of adventurer and peace advocate. Therefore, she is usually hired as a messenger rather than an adventurer.

;Fa'lina
:A canine succubus with a love for muffins, Fa'lina is the headmistress of SAIA, which she founded several thousand years ago.

;Deathbringer
:The result of one of Jyrras' experiments. A bit of magical energy reacted with some bubblegum Jyrras was chewing to form a pink, rabbit-shaped, sentient bubblegum-being. In an ill-advised move, Jyrras allowed her to pick her own name. She chose "Deathbringer" since it sounded cool. Most simply call her "Deebs."

;Edward Ti'Fiona
:The previous owner of Lost Lake, Edward is Alexsi and Dan's father. He protected an injured Destania when a band of adventurers at the tavern threatened to kill the succubus, knowing full well that he risked his life in doing so. However, Edward and Destania fell in love, married, and had a baby boy named Daniel.

;Destania
:A former professor at SAIA, Destania left SAIA on an assignment. She had been attacked during the assignment and stumbled upon Lost Lake. The rest is history.

;The Mows
:Although not really characters in their own right, the mows still must be mentioned for sake of authenticity. Mows appear to have been created accidentally during an insane experiment by two of Jyrras' assistants in his absence (as documented in strip #363). Mows are practically indestructable, although generally harmless. They appear to feed on organic material, chiefly cloth. Their one weapon is the ability to latch onto something and buzz their wings quickly, effectively simulating the feeling of that limb falling asleep.

===Non-canon===
These characters are not a part of the DMFA [[canon (fiction)|canon]], but they do appear in the comic.

;Amber M. Panyko
:Based off of the real Amber but exaggerated in several respects, she usually appears in the comics answering "Questions from the Readers" or providing a little [[Deus_Ex_Machina]] to wrap up a plot. The "Questions from the Readers" comics are considered non-canon.

;Fluffy D. Funni
:A character from a comic Amber began in 6th grade (which she eventually abandoned), Fluffy was resurrected out of a need for some kind of sidekick that didn't violate copyrights in the aforementioned Amber appearances in the comic.

'''Furfire''' is a [[furry]] [[web comic]] by [[Angela Beaman]], otherwise known as Silverfox Relahstar. The comics are separated into many [[subplot|arcs]] of variable length. Currently on hiatus, Angela plans to resume the comic sometime in the near future.

==The History of Furfire==
The idea of Furfire originates from a story Angela wrote in the early 1990s named ''The Twilight Magic Project.'' She put the project on hold for a while as she experimented with other things such as [[Furcadia]], which eventually led her back to the project with renewed interest. Angela added the concept of "furmentials" and their powers over the elements and rechristened the project ''Furfire.'' In 2002, [[Terry Bailey]] joined the Furfire staff as a scriptwriter.

==Setting==
The story begins in the city of Talla'doon. Three races populate the world of Furfire: Humans, faffurs ([[anthropomorphism|anthropomorphic]] animals), and furmentials (faffurs with magical elemental powers). Later, due to a strange incident at an ancient temple, the story shifts to the world of the past.

==The Plot So Far==
===Escape===
After a faro-bird knocks him unconscious during a mid-air battle, Savrin plummets to the ground. After unwillingly acting as a cushion, Diane ropes him (literally) into assisting her plot to rob an ancient temple. Diane inadvertantly reveals her plan to the archaeologists at the temple, who promptly tie them up in a tent. During their excavation, the archaeologists trigger something ancient, releasing a horde of zairabats and opening a magic portal. One of the zairabats manages to give Diane a poisonous bite, putting her life in severe danger. With nowhere else to go, Savrin and Abbie leap through the portal with the unconscious Diane in tow.

===The Time Temple===
Several hours later, the trio land in a mysterious room with a pool of water. Soon discovered and led out of the temple by Quvas Litefoot, Savrin and Abbie realize that they were not in Talla'doon anymore. Quvas escorts them to the throne room of the Chief of the Wildtra.

The story then focuses on the present-day Talla'doon, detailing an exchange between the human Tyler Winchester and the rat Jaster Maivin. Jaster realizes that Tyler had seen Savrin, one of Vandabar Micker's former students, at the temple. Jaster then tells the tale of the Twilight Magic Team, of which Vandabar and Jaster's boss Cavecor Javrafar had been a part of. After an inexperienced Cavecor fell under the influence of the mysterious Shadow Dark, he turned on his fellow Team members, planning to usurp their elemental powers. Vandabar was the only one to survive Cavecor's assault, and he ran away into the night. Soon he began training new recruits, but only one had true potential: Savrin. He was the counterpart to Cavecor's new student, a female kangaroo he had mind-controlled when she was an infant.

===Wildtra - The First Tribe===
After Diane is taken away for healing, Savrin and Abbie find out that the Wildtra chief believes that they are a sign that an ancient legend has come to pass, that Diane is some sort of princess and the two guys are gods. In the guest room, Savrin takes a few minutes to worry about Diane and ponder where they were, theorizing that the portal had sent them into the past. Abbie initially discounts the notion, but the actions of the tribe members cause him to rethink this position. A festival is held in honor of the "gods."

===Tai'far===
Diane sneaks into Savrin's rom while he is asleep, wakes him, and tells him that she overheard a guard plan to overthrow the chief along with something called the "Tai'far." Two shadowy assailants kidnap Diane and render Savrin unconscious. When he awakes, Savrin learns that the Wildtra chief and Abbie have gone missing as well. He eventually discovers their trail in the woods. Another shadowy faffur attacks Savrin, slashing Savrin's ear. Quvas appears in the nick of time, killing the assailant and removing the poison spines now embedded in Savrin's ear. Quvas unmasks the corpse, revealing a black weasel - a Tai'far assassin. The Tai'far are the "hidden enemy" of the Wildtra, the ones who the gods in the legend were supposed to dispatch. While the chief believes in the legend wholeheartedly, Quvas has his doubts. Diane and Abbie languish in a Tai'far prison.

The plot also shifts again to the present, centering upon a skunk named Taxwin. He is apparently drowning his sorrows and his memories of female named Lilly in beer when the feline faffur Katina appeares to drag him home. Elsewhere, Tyler has a clandestine meeting with an unnamed male feline. Vandabar is shown practicing his fire magic and wondering where his lost student Savrin had gone.

===Zephyr's Tale===
Diane and Abbie discover a firewolf furmential in the prison cell next to them who promptly attacks Diane; Abbie halts his attack. The other prisoner reveals his name (Zephyr) and his heritage (firewolf furmential), the latter via transforming into his firewolf form. He notes that he had been in the prison for 9 months, and then launches into a story of how his brother Inavara betrayed him during a raid on a Tai'far camp, leaving him with a mysterious female Tai'far captor.

===The Fur Hunter===
Quvas seems to become quite aggravated whenever someone mentions his son’s death, even going as far as physically threatening Savrin when he asks a question about the incident. Then, without warning, they are ambushed by Maxwell Freeman, aka the Fur Hunter. Maxwell manages to paralyze Quvas and is about to remove his tail when Savrin hurries to the rescue. During the ensuing fight, Maxwell notices that Savrin did not appear to possess the abilities of a full-blooded furmential. While Savrin distracts the hunter by burning his leg, Quvas runs away, but Maxwell lodges a poisoned dagger in his arm. Savrin and Quvas do escape from the hunter, though. In his thoughts, Maxwell acknowledges that he cannot pursue the pair in his current state while also revealing that he works for Inavara.

At the same time, ten miles away, Diane accidentally creats a hole in the prison wall while bemoaning her lack of thieving skills. She also grudgingly helps Zephyr escape from the leg-chain that had been nullifying his magical powers; he immediately blows up the bars separating him from Abbie and Diane. Zephyr silences Diane’s angry protests with a kiss, which only incurs more of Diane’s wrath. The bickering continues until a sudden noise discloses the presence of what appeared to be Zephyr’s captor.

===Loss of the Love===
Back to the present, the plot focuses on Taxwin, who has a flashback to the times when he was training to become a member of the New Twilight Magic Team with the love of his life, Lilly, Vandabar’s top student. Taxwin had a nasty habit of teasing Vandabar’s “son,” Savrin. Vandabar sent his students on a simple scouting mission, which went horribly wrong after a surprise attack left Lilly dead. It was then that Taxwin left the New Twilight Magic Team. Shortly after that, Savrin ran away.

In the past, Quvas rested after Maxwell’s attack. Unbeknownst to him, the poison was taking effect. Savrin thought about some of the things that had been said about him in recent days and remembered what Vandabar had said to cause Savrin to abandon the kindly old horse. One day, Vandabar had recounted the tale of the firewolves, that had one day gone rabid and began a massive killing spree. After one of these slaughters, Vandabar had found Savrin in the ruins of the city and revealed that Savrin was most likely a human-firewolf hybrid. The shock of this information sent the young Savrin into a powerful rage, destroying the room. Terrified of what lay within him, Savrin ran away, leaving Vandabar to call weakly after him. Quvas quickly brings Savrin out of his reverie.

===Queen of the Tai'far===
In fact, the visitor is not Zephyr’s captor, but her daughter: Yuira, queen of the Tai’far. She uses her powers of hypnosis to hold Zephyr in a daze until Diane breaks her mesmerizing gaze with a piece of rubble. Yuira retaliats by putting Diane in a chokehold until Zephyr utilizes a flame spell to break the hold. When Yuira returnes with reinforcements, Zephyr once again becomes a firewolf. With Abbie and Diane on his back, he blasts the wall to create and exit and leaps out into the moat.

In the present, Tyler stands watch outside of the ancient temple. The male feline (Tyler revealed that his name was Fu) contacts him telepathically and reminds him of his task, which is apparently to retrieve a carving from the ruins.

===The Yellow Rose===
The wound is affecting Quvas more than he lets on. Despite his valiant attempts to continue, he collapses. Quvas then comes to the realization that Maxwell’s dagger was poisoned. Since the rules of the High Guard state that one cannot return if one has been injured outside of the village, Savrin takes Quvas to the nearest town in order to heal him and allow him to return to his tribe. As the town isn’t exactly friendly towards furmentials, Savrin disguises himself with a stolen robe. At the Inn of the Yellow Rose, a pink and yellow vixen ([[Hollyann]]) comes to Quvas and Savrin’s aid when Savrin gets into a fight. Conveniently enough, Hollyann is also a healer. Due to the seriousness of his wound, she uses a rather unorthodox method: She allows him to die, then resurrects him. Because of his brush with death, Quvas finally comes to terms with his son’s death. Later that night, Savrin goes to thank the vixen, but she had already disappeared into the forest.

Diane, Abbie, and Zephyr survive the leap from the prison tower into the river. Diane and Zephyr promptly resume their bickering. The three find a log and peacefully float down the river, lulling Diane to sleep; she has a dream of her beloved father disappearing into a bright light. Shortly afterwards, the log washes up on the shore. Zephyr roughly retrieves his blade from Diane; after a jibe from Abbie he threatens to turn the blade on him. Due to this, Abbie promptly kicks Zephyr out of the group.

Yuira meets with Inavara, who apparently plotted with Yuira so the two could gain power in their respective groups.

===The Brothers' Feud – Part 1===
Zephyr is resting on a branch when a figure cloaked in shadow knocks him out of the tree. After a short battle, the figure uses a confinement stone to seal Zephyr’s firewolf form and then reveals himself to be Gera, Zephyr’s godfather. He also informs the feisty firewolf that his brother, who he thought was dead, was in fact very much alive. Zephyr learns that he cannot return to his tribe because Inavara erased any trace of him from their memories.

Abbie and Diane wake up early in the morning, just in time to hear the cry of a Tai’far pursing them. When confronted by the Tai’far, Abbie takes it upon himself to defend Diane. One attempts to kill Diane, but Inavara cuts it down in mid-leap, reminding the Tai’far that he wanted the pair alive. As Inavara threatens Diane to divulge Zephyr’s location, Zephyr solves that problem by appearing to confront his brother. When Inavara shifts to his firewolf form, Zephyr finds himself unable to do the same due to Gera’s confinement stone. Thus, what appears to be a David vs. Goliath battle commences.

During a nightmare about his past, Savrin suddenly awakes in a strange realm. A spirit informs him that it brought him into this realm to comfort him, as the spirit had overheard Savrin’s nightmare. Then the spirit sends Savrin back into his body, but its parting words strike Savrin as particularly odd… what did it mean by “You hold my only safety?” Something Quvas says triggers an enraged magical reaction from Savrin and he falls unconscious, so Quvas decides to go back to the camp to find out what exactly is wrong with him. The spirit drags Savrin back into the other realm. The spirit finally shows herself, taking a canine form. She tells Savrin that whoever has the sword (the sword Savrin had stolen from Vandabar before he ran away) is her keeper.

===The Brothers’ Feud – Part 2===
As Diane and Abbie run away from the battle, they encounter Quvas and Savrin. After the cheerful reunion, Diane speedily returns to her argumentative ways with the furmential. Savrin notices a couple of bright flashes emanating from the clearing where Zephyr and Inavara were fighting and flies over to help, but he distracts Zephyr, giving Inavara an opportunity to knock him out. By now, Inavara has reverted to his lower form. Zephyr recovers in time to return the favor. Savrin creates a smoke cloud to facilitate a hasty escape. They do not get far before Inavara finds the pair and knocks Savrin out. As falls down towards the river, Zephyr uses an airshell necklace to allow him and Savrin to breathe underwater. Abbie, Diane, and Quvas rush over to where Savrin and Zephyr fell into the water, only to see Inavara about to flush them out with fire. Inavara flies off after a tense standoff with Quvas. Abbie pulls the two firewolves ashore. As the group leaves, Inavara spies on them, with a few silent parting words for his brother.

===Xasalas===
In the world of Talla’doon, Xasalas is the weeklong holiday at the end of the year celebrating peace and unity, where everyone tosses aside their differences. Abbie walks through the snow until he runs into Diane, who had been caught stealing some fruit. Hiding Diane in the snow, Abbie led her pursuer in the wrong direction. Abbie and Diane then head to the cave where Zephyr and Savrin were waiting. The mere mention of Xasalas stirs up some old memories of Savrin’s past. Stomping outside into the snow, Savrin remembers the last time he had celebrated Xasalas, before the taxes became so high that Vandabar could not afford presents. An avalanche catches Savrin off-guard, but he emerges unscathed. A light-fly named Eoira leads him to a Xasalas party, where all of the magical folk can frolic. Savrin awakes to Diane and Zephyr. Was his Xasalas experience just a dream? Zephyr discloses that he had a similar experience years ago, something only those of magic could experience.

===Sleepers===
In the present, Tyler and another human meet with Fu and present him a charcoal rubbing of the massive boulder. Fu throws away the rubbing when he realizes it is a fake. Tyler’s partner had been continually aggravating Fu with his angry comments, eventually drawing the wrath of the faffur. Fu sends Tyler off to the college to get a copy of the map from the leader of the excavation.

Returning to the past, Diane and Savrin resume arguing and Abbie finally reveals that he had been acting stupid all along simply to build Diane’s self esteem. The three finally get around to making formal introductions. Abbie tells Savrin that he is adopted, and Savrin informs the others that he was abandoned as a baby and is a human/firewolf hybrid. Savrin has another angry reaction when Abbie mentions the Great Slaughter, forcing Abbie to knock him out with a blow to the head.

The spirit in the sword draws both Zephyr and Savrin into the spirit realm. Savrin decides to call her “Kira” as opposed to the gibberish that is her real name. Kira tells the two firewolves to seek out the elf Erior and they awake shortly afterwards.

Without warning, Zephyr and Savrin fly off. As it turns out, they flew off due to an encroaching band of thieves: The Red Claw. Abbie manages to kill one before they all attack the heroes. Quvas and Abbie fend them off for a short while before Savrin and Zephyr leap into action, driving the thieves off after Zephyr handily dispatched their leader. The gang stumbles upon the apparently abandoned Wildtra village. While exploring the village, Zephyr and Savrin discover a little Wildtra girl. Zephyr almost attacks the girl, but Savrin stops him just in time. The little girl is Tara, daughter of the Wildtra chief and Quvas’ “niece.” Apparently when the Tai’far had attacked a couple of days before, they had put everyone into a deep sleep with their powder.

===Warrior's Vendetta===
A black musteline faffur approaches Inavara in the forest, claiming he knows where Zephyr and the gang have gone. A tense truce is reached as the two trek towards the Wildtra village.

Everyone in the village has fallen into a deep sleep except little Tara. Savrin, Zephyr, Diane, and Abbie head over to the bath-hut, for they haven’t washed in days. Diane is the first to sample the wonders of the bath-hut, until Zephyr accidentally wanders into her room. Outside the village, the musteline and Inavara make their stealthy entrance. The ferret trips Zephyr, taking the opportunity to compare the feather he carried around with him to the feathers on Zephyr’s back: An exact match. The ferret lays down the challenge and a swordfight commences. The battle turns into a fistfight after they abandon their swords in the wall. While Abbie throws a dirt clod at the ferret, Quvas sneaks up from behind and delivers a hard knock to the back of the head.

When he awakens, Sable Flame (for that is his name) states that he is out to exact revenge upon his father’s killer. The only evidence of the horrendous crime had been a single feather, apparently one of Zephyr’s. Diane postulates that Zephyr was framed. Regardless, Zephyr becomes so enraged that Abbie and Quvas dump him in a bathtub to cool off. He emerges in a robe which he immediately complains about. Abbie takes matters into his own hands, yanking Zephyr’s wing until he quiets down. Next, Sable turns his attention to Savrin, managing to irk him as well. Inavara waits outside, overhearing the conversation in its entirety. Everyone leaves the room except for Tara and Sable. Sable privately reveals to Tara that he believes that Zephyr was framed. Savrin has yet another nightmare, this time about being attacked by Inavara in firewolf form.

In the morning, Quvas unties Sable and lets him go, but not before Tara drags him back to say his goodbyes. Inavara accosts Sable in the forest, but Sable simply sprays something in his face and runs off. Later, Inavara ambushes Sable again, but this time a sword battle ensues. Sable coats his blade with a sleep-inducing herb he was collecting earlier, effectively knocking out Inavara for the next hour. Sable saunters off into the distance and Inavara flies off into the sky when he awakes.

===Inner Demons – Part 1===
Zephyr quickly returns to his teasing ways after Savrin drops a bucket of water. Savrin grabs his shirt and yells at him him before collapsing. His voice quite oddly changes as well as his eyes, which become a deep shade of red. Savrin definitely does not appear to be himself, as he promptly threatens Zephyr, both physically and verbally. His magic is considerably stronger, as he almost incinerates Diane, but she ducks. He would have killed Zephyr had it not been for Quvas’ interference. Quvas quickly realizes that this was not Savrin. The spirit possessing him calls itself “Yuumei.” “This is my body now,” he claims. Abbie once again leaped into action, putting Savrin/Yuumei in a sleeper hold, taking him out for the moment. A blue mist emanates from Savrin and he apparently returns to normal.

In another location, a blind wanderer asks for directions. But when two ruffians attack him, he handily takes them out. One of them gets up and tries to attack him again, but the wanderer casts a spell that shows him two possible futures and warns him to choose his actions wisely.

===Inner Demons – Part 2===
Savrin awakes with no recollection of his transformation. Abbie had suffered some injuries during the fight, and was recovering as well. Being a furmential, Savrin is good to go while Abbie is still unconscious. The others do not mention what had happened earlier that day when Savrin joins them for dinner. Afterwards, when Zephyr and Savrin meditate, Savrin notices something odd occur. Zephyr reveals that he had performed a firewolf bonding ritual, one that linked their magical energies together. The resulting conversation awakens a disgruntled Abbie. Quvas recommends another day of rest, which everyone takes gladly.

The next morning, everyone awakens feeling refreshed. Quvas stays behind to watch over the sleeping populace while Diane, Abbie, Savrin, and Zephyr venture forth in search of a cure. While Diane and Zephyr argue again, Savrin wonders why he and Abbie had been injured. Something spooks the hoofra (their term for an equine animal), who throws Abbie onto the floor and sends the cart crashing into a ditch. A group of Tai’far assassins approach and Yuumei possesses Savrin once again. He reduces three of them to ashes and the last one runs away. But before Yuumei can turn on Zephyr, Savrin regains control of his body. The hoofra returns to Quvas, who starts fearing for Diane’s safety.

In another section of the forest, the leader of the Red Claw, Uito, curses Zephyr and promises revenge. Inavara appears, fire blasts the leader, and hurries off, muttering about how he had to “amuse myself with lesser beings.” A canine stranger remarks on Inavara’s talents as he walks by; Inavara demands to know who the stranger is.

===Inner Demons – Part 3===
After noticing the remains of the cart strewn all over the side of the road, Savrin gives up hope of finding a cure for the sleepers until Zephyr yells some sense into him. Savrin, Abbie, Diane, and Zephyr make a pact to stay together no matter what. Continuing on their trek, Diane refuses to walk past a pole with a strange carving on it and gets into an argument with Abbie over it. Yuumei for the third time possesses Savrin and tells everyone to be quiet. It seems that the carving on the pole causes anger in people and devours them and their emotions. Yuumei reveals that he had been lying dormant within Savrin since he was born. While Yuumei and the carving converse in the language of the spirits, Abbie, Diane, and Zephyr begin arguing again, only feeding the carving. Yuumei attempts to burn the carving, but to no avail. The statue retaliates with an energy blast to Yuumei’s back. Zephyr attempts to burn the statue with equally ineffective results. Yuumei gets up and tries again, succeeding this time. He promptly falls unconscious and Kira brings Savrin into the spirit realm. In the land of the conscious, Zephyr tells Abbie and Diane of Kira’s existence. Naturally, they think he is insane. When Savrin awakes, Zephyr throttles him when he denies the presence of Kira in his sword. Abbie truly believes that Zephyr had gone crazy and slaps him silly.

At sunset, the group reaches the resting house of a Dr. Simeon. Zephyr rests comfortably while Abbie disregards all of Savrin’s questions about what happened with the carving. Savrin has yet another odd dream, dragged into the spirit realm by Yuumei. Savrin looks into a mirror and is shocked to see Yuumei leap out of the mirror in Savrin’s form. Savrin awakes screaming. He manages to reassure himself that it was only a dream… until he heard Yuumei’s voice.

===Against the Sides===
Professor Fetch has just finished teaching a class in the present. Tyler tries to get his attention (as part of Fu’s mission), but he just misses Fetch; Tyler dejectedly leaves the college. Jaster appears and drags him off to a meeting with Cavecor. Along the way, Tyler bumps into Palen. Cavecor asks Tyler about the “New Twilight Magic Team.” When Tyler comes up with nothing, Cavecor nearly kills him for neglecting his duties. But the Shadow Dark takes control of him and he gives orders to both Tyler and Jaster.

Cavecor flashes back to three decades ago, when he was just a fledgling member of the Twilight Magic Team. Frustrated by his inability to control his element, Cavecor angrily leaves the training center. He enters a tent in the local carnival and the mysterious blind wanderer from the end of the “Inner Demons – Part One” arc is sitting at the table. He warns Cavecor to refuse the ancient power that will allow him to vanquish the Twilight Magic Team, but Cavecor cockily refuses the advice. The Shadow Dark (in his faffur form – a black horse) approaches the Time Guardian and demands that he tells him the future. The Guardian refuses and the Shadow Dark attacks. It is unknown as to how this battle turned out.

Back in the presence, Cavecor realizes the folly of his deeds, but it is too late to change it. Jaster calls up a shadowy assassin and tells him to eliminate Fu, as per the Shadow Dark’s orders. The assassin’s enigmatic thoughts (“It’ll be like a family reunion”) suggests that the assassin is somehow related to Fu.

Katina enters Taxwin’s apartment, only to find him moodily sulking, pondering revenge for his dear Lilly. Katina proposes that Taxwin return to Vandabar and Taxwin finally agrees. While they walk through a park, a trio of punks accosts the two. While Taxwin momentarily holds off the three, Katina uses her water powers, but all it does is further enrage them. Vandabar senses Katina using her magic and sets off to assist her. Out of nowhere, Palen appears and kills the three. Taxwin recognizes Palen as the one who killed Lilly. Palen quickly takes him out, but she runs off upon Vandabar’s arrival. After they leave, one of the punks - a female bat - is actually alive. Palen sneaks into Taxwin’s room and stabs a picture of him, an act of symbolism.

;Savrin Furfire
:A human/firewolf furmential hybrid, Savrin is wary of revealing his furmential heritage. As his father was a human, he has no fur except for on his tail.

;Diane Mai'lar
:A young feline faffur, Diane wishes only to become like her father, an accomplished thief. She has had various problems doing so, due to her limited skills.

;Abbalion "Abbie" Mai'lar
:Diane's adoptive older brother, he is much more skilled than Diane. However, the coyote faffur tends to act incompetent and stupid in order to boost his sister's self-esteem and confidence.

;Zephyr
:A cocky firewolf furmential, Zephyr looks down upon "normal" faffurs. Despite this attitude, he seems to have an infatuation with Diane.

;Kira
:She is the spirit that lives in Savrin's sword. While she has no form, she takes a canine faffur form out of respect for her companions.

;Vai'ray Stareye
:While she does share Zephyr's haughty attitude towards non-furmentials, this windhawk furmential healer has a soft spot for Diane.

;Inavara
:Zephyr's brother and a skilled swordsman, Inavara's quest is to end his brother's life, though he has yet to succeed.

;Yuumei
:A spirit much like Kira, Yuumei is far more malicious than the friendly Kira. Like all spirits, he is formless, but he prefers to copy his "host" Savrin's form. He possesses Savrin from time to time.

;Professor Fetch
:Leader of the archaeological dig at the beginning of the comic, he also teaches at the nearby college.

;Quvas Litefoot
:Guardian of the sacred Time-water temple and member of the Wildtra High Guard, Quvas discovered Savrin, Diane, and Abbie soon after their arrival in the past.

;Jaster Maivin
:Cavecor’s second-in-command, Jaster carries out all of his orders..

;Tyler Winchester
:A human rogue working for Jaster, he also appears to be taking orders from a male feline.

;Vandabar Micker
:A member of the Twilight Magic team and the lone survivor after Cavecor’s betrayal, he found Savrin as a baby and raised him as his own son.

;Cavecor Javrafar
:A wanderer prior to joining the Twilight Magic Team, Cavecor had not finished his training before confronting the Shadow Dark, as a result it took control of him.

;Taxwin Pacara
:A former member of Vandabar's New Twilight Magic Team, he left shortly after his love Lilly died. He did not finish his training; as such his power over the earth element is limited.

;Katina Shavara
:The only current member of the New Twilight Magic Team, Katina spends much of her time caring for the heartbroken Taxwin. She commands the element of water.

;Maxwell Freeman
:More infamously known as the Fur Hunter, Maxwell hunts furs so he can take their tails and sell them for high profits.

;Yuira
:The ruthless Queen of the Tai’far, Yuira killed her own mother in order to ascend to her current position.

;Palen Blackfurr
:The mute kangaroo who Cavecor had mind controlled, she becomes a killing machine at his command. It was Palen who had killed Lilly on the scouting mission.

;Fu
:A male fur with snow leopard markings, Fu is apparently Tyler’s second boss.

;Hollyann
:A traveling vixen, musician, and healer, she comes to Quvas and Savrin’s aid at the Inn of the Yellow Rose

;Gera
:An earthbear furmential, Gera is Zephyr’s godfather.

;Tara Mioow
:The daughter of the Wildtra chief, Tara is also Quvas’ “niece.” She was the only one who did not fall victim to the sleeping powder during the Tai’far raid.

;Sable Flame
:A wandering musteline faffur with an odd fascination with a certain firewolf feather.

;Shadow Dark
:An evil entity that took control of Cavecor years ago.

;Time Guardian
:A mysterious blind purple faffur, the Time Guardian (as the Shadow Dark referred to him) apparently has some power over time, as he is able to show people their futures. However, he acknowledges that what he knows is not set in stone.

'''DMFA''' or '''Dan and Mab's Furry Adventures''' is a [[furry]] [[web comic]] by [[Amber Panyko]]. It is divided into arcs ([[subplot]]s) of variable length. It updates three times a week, normally on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The first 5 arcs are in black and white. Starting in the middle of the 6th arc, the comic has been in color. The comic is partially based off of the online game [[Furcadia]] and several of the main characters are based off of the artist's friends on Furcadia.

== Origins of DMFA ==

DMFA began in 1998, when on Furcadia Amber promised a shrine of sorts to anyone who could find a particular song for her. When a friend who went by the name of Daniel Ti'Fiona found the song in question, Amber made good on her promise and created the shrine. As a joke, she added a sign proclaiming "Coming soon: the Misadventures of Daniel Ti'Fiona, the comic!" However, Daniel took this seriously and continually prodded her to actually start the comic until she finally gave in. The first comic was posted on the website in 1999.

Initially featuring Daniel and Miss Mab, the cast of the comic soon expanded, including both friends of Amber's on Furcadia and characters of her own creation. Later on in 1999, the comic fell into a hiatus for about a year. Amber resumed comic production in 2000, and the comic has been updating steadily ever since.

== Plot ==
The comic's arcs revolve around the adventures and misadventures of the cast. Most of these exploits are whimsical and humorous, sometimes parodizing aspects of [[popular culture]]. Most events occur in a fictional land called Furrae; specifically, in an inn/pub called Lost Lake (based off of the real Lost Lake in Furcadia).

===Main Characters===

;Daniel Ti'Fiona
:A retired feline adventurer, Daniel is one of the main characters of the comic. He loves [[ale]] and has a strong fascination for [[Amazons]]. It has been revealed that Dan is an [[incubus]]. Currently, he is struggling to come to terms with his 'cubi heritage at the Succubus and Incubus Academy (SAIA) with the 'assistance' of Abel and Fa'lina. He resides in the basement of his sister's tavern and inn, Lost Lake.

;Miss Mab
:Mab is a feline [[fae]]. Usually a whimsical, happy-go-lucky character, Mab has a penchant for hugging anything and everything within reach. In fact, she possesses a list of "Things to Hug." However, don't get her angry. She once blew up an entire glen when aggravated. Apparently thousands of years old, Mab used to live in a distant Fae kingdom, although she left for unknown reasons.

;Pipclideous Dominiscus
:Simply nicknamed 'Pip,' he is a golden [[drake]] owned by Miss Mab. Easily angered and quite fierce, Pip will often attack anyone that comes within lunging distance, with biting as his preferred method of attack. He especially targets Dan and photographers.

;Jyrras Gianna
:A kangaroo rat/kangaroo mix, Jyrras is one of the most brilliant inventors in all of Furrae. He is rather shy and dislikes attention. Most notably, he has an aversion to being called "cute." As a result, he wears glasses (although he doesn't need them) to create a nerdy visage rather than a cute one. He is credited with inventing "patches," devices that use both technology and magic to alter the users' physical appearance.

;Lorenda Soulstealer
:Lorenda is a cow/demon-mare hybrid. As such, she is carnivorous, a trait rarely seen in bovines. Since she is half-demon, she has had a hard time keeping a job. She used to work at [[Twink Territories]], a haven for [[powergamer]]s and [[godmoder]]s everywhere until she met Jyrras, who offered her a place to shack up in return for not devouring him. She currently lives with him near Lost Lake.

;Wildy-san
:A boisterous and devious ferret, Wildy is small compared to the rest of the cast but she is quite fierce at times, perhaps rivaled only by Pip. With a sharp tongue and a tactless demeanor, she is unafraid to speak her mind. However, she is very protective of her friends and is very open with them. She lives in an apartment away from Lost Lake, yet spends most of her time at Lost Lake.

;Alexsi Ti'Fiona
:Daniel's half-sister and fellow feline, Alexsi runs the tavern and inn known as Lost Lake. Unlike Dan, she does not possess a 'cubi heritage (Alexsi's father remarried after her biological mother's death). She is quite often seen with a comically oversized mallet (inherited from her mother) which she uses to forcibly eject unruly tavern patrons or inn customers.

;Merlitz Meshaiko
:Yet another feline cast member, Merlitz is a practicing fire mage. Currently working as Alexsi's bodyguard, over the years he has become attached to the rest of the Lost Lake denizens. Many consider him the [[straight man]] of the cast. He is currently dating Aaryanna, a [[succubus]].

;Pyroduck
:Nobody knows much about Pyroduck, not even his species. He is perhaps best known for making witty comments about the occurrences at the inn, often breaking the [[fourth wall]] in the process. Sometimes he will disappear into the countryside to explore, dropping by Lost Lake to offer his quips and comments at exactly the right time.

;Azlan
:An adventurer as well as a vulpine fae, Azlan is fun-loving and quite silly at times. Many of his appearances serve as comic relief. Azlan quickly learned that very few adventurers would take a fae seriously, so he uses a patch to alter his wings' appearance and hide his fae antennae. Azlan often tells stories of the exploits of his wife Neni, who appears to cause chaos wherever she goes. He carries around a "squeeky koala of doom," a gift from Neni.

;Aaryanna
:Merlitz encountered Aaryanna during one of the cast's many adventures. A feline succubus, Aaryanna graduated from the Succubus and Incubus Academy (SAIA) roughly 25 years ago and since then has been seeking her favorite teacher, Destania, who left SAIA on an assignment and never returned. A [[phoenix]] [[oracle]] led her to believe that Daniel had killed Destania, and she set out in search for Dan. A short fight ensued, but Mab forced the two to talk things out. Now that Dan's incubus side has been revealed, she has become Dan's mentor, whether he likes it or not. Aaryanna has an affinity for toast.

===Secondary Characters===

;Kria Soulstealer
:A demon-mare and Lorenda's mother, Kria could be termed the stereotypical demon, as she believes that might makes right, and that the meek shall not inherit the earth. Before she discovered that she was pregnant with Lorenda, Kria devoured her husband after she discovered him cheating on her. Her daughter being her one soft spot, Kria tries her best to maintain her relationship with Lorenda, despite her daughter's continuing association with those... ''lessers''.

;Biggs-san
:Wildy's brother, Biggs is the ruler of Twink Territories. Like all ferrets, Biggs is diminuitive in size but is a fearsome ruler. He has a long rivalry with Wildy, and several encounters ended violently... most with Wildy emerging triumphant.

;The Basement Rats
:Dan's roommates, the four rats have never been seen outside of the basement, yet contain a good deal of street smarts. Their names are unknown, except for the female, Photophie. The dark grey one has never been noticed awake. Although they refer to each other as "Bro" and "Sis," only Photophie and the light grey male are actually related.

;Matilda Kissriss
:A female Mythos, Matilda owns a small magical homes and knick-knack store. Some speculate that she is attracted to Daniel, citing the fact that she gave Dan an expensive sword for free as evidence.

;Dark Pegasus
:A demonic pegasus, Dark Pegasus was one of Dan's most erstwhile foes. In their most recent encounter, where Dark Pegasus attempted to overthrow the kingdom of H-ann and ressurect a dark god for the third time, he and Dan engaged in a fight to the death. Dark Pegasus was vanquished once again and Dan banished his soul by means of an ancient ritual. ("Bad Pegasus! No come back to life! Stay dead! No cookie!!!")

;Abel
:Like Dan, Abel is a feline incubus. Unlike Dan, Abel has fully embraced his cubi heritage and is one of the top students at SAIA. Abel has been banned from the SAIA library due to the "Library Incident." (Much like the "Noodle Incident" of [[Calvin and Hobbes]] fame, it has never been described yet it has been referenced on occasion.) He has also been hell for the rooming assigners, who have to find him new roommates as often as once a semester.

;Aliyka
:A phoenix (but not the flaming type) and a natural arbitrator, Aliyka is an odd combination of adventurer and peace advocate. Therefore, she is usually hired as a messenger rather than an adventurer.

;Fa'lina
:A canine succubus with a love for muffins, Fa'lina is the headmistress of SAIA, which she founded several thousand years ago.

;Deathbringer
:The result of one of Jyrras' experiments. A bit of magical energy reacted with some bubblegum Jyrras was chewing to form a pink, rabbit-shaped, sentient bubblegum-being. In an ill-advised move, Jyrras allowed her to pick her own name. She chose "Deathbringer" since it sounded cool. Most simply call her "Deebs."

;Edward Ti'Fiona
:The previous owner of Lost Lake, Edward is Alexsi and Dan's father. He protected an injured Destania when a band of adventurers at the tavern threatened to kill the succubus, knowing full well that he risked his life in doing so. However, Edward and Destania fell in love, married, and had a baby boy named Daniel.

;Destania
:A former professor at SAIA, Destania left SAIA on an assignment. She had been attacked during the assignment and stumbled upon Lost Lake. The rest is history.

;The Mows
:Although not really characters in their own right, the mows still must be mentioned for sake of authenticity. Mows appear to have been created accidentally during an insane experiment by two of Jyrras' assistants in his absence (as documented in strip #363). Mows are practically indestructable, although generally harmless. They appear to feed on organic material, chiefly cloth. Their one weapon is the ability to latch onto something and buzz their wings quickly, effectively simulating the feeling of that limb falling asleep.

===Non-canon===
These characters are not a part of the DMFA [[canon (fiction)|canon]], but they do appear in the comic.

;Amber M. Panyko
:Based off of the real Amber but exaggerated in several respects, she usually appears in the comics answering "Questions from the Readers" or providing a little [[Deus_Ex_Machina]] to wrap up a plot. The "Questions from the Readers" comics are considered non-canon.

;Fluffy D. Funni
:A character from a comic Amber began in 6th grade (which she eventually abandoned), Fluffy was resurrected out of a need for some kind of sidekick that didn't violate copyrights in the aforementioned Amber appearances in the comic.

''Jack'''s debut arc involved a child named ''Fnar'', who was little more than an unborn fetus whose life was ended early in the first trimester. This arc also debuted the primary character for which the comic was named: Jack. This character is portrayed as a rather ragged green rabbit in rags, wielding a scythe much akin to the various incarnations of the Grim Reaper.

The comic centers around decidedly mature themes in one form or another, most noteably in the visual artistic form. It also features Hell most prominently. This can be demonstrated when the third strip in the debut arc arc allowed Fnar to meet his mother, who was restrained to a cave wall with the rock actually encompassing her right leg and holding her arms as if it was eating her. The mature themes of the comic are made quite plain at that time, as the woman bore a stab wound under her left ribs near the stomach and also had her throat slashed. The blood from these wounds is still dripping in the scenes, and Fnar himself looked grisly as he was "aged" by Jack in stages to the age of a preteen boy.

''Jack'''s plot bounces around quite often, but it remains true to the Hell theme for the most part. On occasion, strips are published which pertain to real world events, like the ''Angry Brian'' story arc which depicted events similar to those of the horrific [[Wikipedia:Columbine High School massacre|Columbine High School Massacre]]. Other features of the comic include the appearance of real places like the former [[Wikipedia:World Trade Center|World Trade Center]] that was destroyed in the infamous and very tragically devistating terrorist attacks of [[Wikipedia:September 11, 2001 attacks|9/11]]. It should be noted that the ''Angry Brian'' story arc sparked heavy feedback from the readers and was what earned the comic a large reader base.

Similarly, ''Jack'' features Heaven (as you might expect) as well as angels. These two forces do not fight each other much in the comic; in fact, for the most part they appear to work together without any major problems, although this may be due to the focus on Jack, the most amenable of Sins. Some arcs do take place in the mortal world, which both sides occasionally find themselves.

In all, the comic can be morbid, but it has its tender moments and optimistic highlights. Not all the characters fo the comic are doomed to Hell for eternity. They all have a chance to eventually live on earth again as a test to see if they have "learned" from their previous life's mistakes and if that is so, they get admitted to heaven. If not, they are condemmed once more to the bowels of Hell.

'''Amber Panyko''' is an American artist and writer, most known for her [[Censorship Pandas]] and the popular webcomic [[DMFA]]. She often goes by the name ''[[Miss Mab]]'', after her [[fursona]] on [[Furcadia]]. She graduated from the University of Southern Indiana in August of 2005. == DMFA ==
DMFA began in 1998, when on Furcadia Amber promised a shrine of sorts to anyone who could find a particular song for her. When a friend who went by the name of Daniel Ti'Fiona found the song in question, Amber made good on her promise and created the shrine. As a joke, she added a sign proclaiming "Coming soon: the Misadventures of Daniel Ti'Fiona, the comic!" However, Daniel took this seriously and continually prodded her to actually start the comic until she finally gave in. The first comic was posted on the website in 1999.

Initially featuring Daniel and Miss Mab, the cast of the comic soon expanded, including both friends of Amber's on Furcadia and characters of her own creation. Later on in 1999, the comic fell into a hiatus for about a year. Amber resumed comic production in 2000, and the comic has been updating steadily ever since.

Amber occasionally creates comic strips for her brother Darkmoon's site, The Inverted Dungeon. In addition, she has taken to "chibifying" the cast of the webcomic [[Jack]] and many members of the Jack forum.
