Eurofurence

Patronise: Mostly removed some ambiguity about it's size. I think the new phrasing is less easy to misinterpret while still giving Eurofurence its well earned place.

Eurofurence
Eurofurence (commonly also EF), is the largest furry convention in Europe and the 10th largest in the world. It was founded in 1995, making it the longest running furry convention. The 2023 event in Hamburg, Germany had 3,408 attendees.

It is typically held in summer and located in various places of Germany, but it has seen other countries as well, notably Sweden, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic. Eurofurence 12 was held at the same venue as the Eurofurence 11, and Eurofurence 15 marked a return to the Ringberg Hotel in Suhl, Thuringia for the third and final year in succession. Since Eurofurence 16 in 2010, the convention has been held at the Maritim Hotel in Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. In 2014, Eurofurence returned to Berlin, taking place at the Estrel Hotel, the largest hotel in Germany.

Programming
Since Eurofurence 12, Eurofurence has run five days from Wednesday to Sunday. Early arrival and late departure options are offered for those who want to stay another night or two. There are several main events that are held every year, often on the same day and time each year. Popular main stage events are the Opening Ceremony, Uncle Kage's Story Hour, the fursuit dance contest Enter the Arena, a fursuit game show, a concert by Fox Amoore or Foxes and Peppers (depending on Pepper Coyote's availability) and the pawpet show. The pawpet show is a furry hand and rod puppet performance, produced and performed by a mixed crew of Eurofurence staff and attendees. It is written as a feature-length stage show, mixing comedy and drama, with music, added sound effects, special effects and more recently also prerecorded video footage inserted between the scenes. The Big Blue Dance follows the pawpet show and is the last event of the convention. It is a dance event held in the main dance hall by BigBlueFox and other DJs, and often continues throughout the night. Light effects, live mixed background animations and other atmospheric effects are also present.

On the final (departure) day of the convention, a Dead Dog Party is held for those who want to relax and wind down while preventing post-con depression. In earlier years, a group photo of all those attending the convention was taken on Sunday morning. However, it was moved to an earlier day as many congoers were not able to get out of bed so early after the Big Blue Dance the previous night. It also posed problems for people wanting to depart early in the morning, who had to miss the photo.

Art and merchandise
For the duration of the con, the dealer's den is available for attendees to sell merchandise of varying sorts. Since Eurofurence 17, two dealer's dens have been available, as the single one could no longer handle the demand.

There is also an art show, where attendees can look around for art and make bids for pieces they would like. About half-way through the convention, the art show is closed and the art auction is held to sell the pieces to the highest bidders. The auction is conducted by Uncle Kage.

Fursuiting
There are several events and other facilities for fursuiters. There is always a headless lounge available, which is an area that only fursuiters can enter where they can freely un-suit and relax. The lounge is normally full of fans and other cooling equipment to help the fursuiters cool off. During most of the convention there is also a official fursuit photoshoot, where fursuiters can have pictures of their fursuits taken by a team of professional photographers.

Besides Enter the Arena, a second dance contest Paws on Fire has been established. It is a dance battle style contest also known as Floor Wars at other furry conventions and takes place on the second (or club) stage.

Finally, a fursuit group photo is traditionally taken on Saturday, followed by the fursuit parade which fursuiters and non-fursuiters alike are invited to participate in. Since fursuit attendance has been steadily rising over the years (reaching 400 in 2011), the parade is now held entirely outside, and in Eurofurence 17 the parade took place in the city streets of Magdeburg.

EF Prime
EF Prime is a tv channel which broadcasts an information and entertainment during Eurofurence on the internal hotel TV system. It launched in 2007 during EF 13, and airs information about EF-related events and hotel facilities. In between, it shows furry and furry-related shorts, clips and shows as well as clips that aren't furry related, yet popular among the fandom.
A live twitter feed is being shown during the whole time where tweets, directed at @EF_prime, being shown as well as changes in programming and announcements.

At EF 17, EF Prime got its own mascot, a computer generated wolf named Spikey Wolf. He was introduced in a video parody of Eminem's "My name is" and is voiced by Shay. Spikey highlighted the days timetable on EF Prime on daily base and also provided in numerous quotes during live events.

Responsible for EF Prime are:
* BigBlueFox (program schedule, content management, on-air design)
* Athesis (playout and twitter software)

Daily Eurofurence
The Daily Eurofurence is a newspaper published during Eurofurence, reporting all kinds of events from the prior day. The 'newspaper' consists of various articles, some cartoons, an occasional cross-word puzzle and the updated timetable for the convention.

Organization
Eurofurence 1 was first organized in 1995 by Tes-Tui-H'ar and unci, neither of whom are now involved with running the convention. In 1997, Sven "Cheetah" Tegethoff, took over as convention chairman of Eurofurence 3 and has chaired nearly every Eurofurence since then. Eurofurence 4 was organized and financed by Samarindus, who found a location for the 1998 convention in the Netherlands with the help of Naros.

Later in 1998, Eurofurence e.V. was registered as a social organization in Germany to operate the convention annually from Eurofurence 5 in 1999 to the present day. However, it is not limited to any specific location, and has many international members among its staff and members. Since 2009, Eurofurence e.V. has their own flags, banners and posters with the logo.

Current staff
For Eurofurence 25 (2019), the core members of convention staff, and their areas of responsibility, are as follows:

MiDFur

2010-07-18T09:45:52Z

Patronise: Added link to con venue video

:See also MidFur for fans from the English Midlands.

MiDFur is short for Melbourne in December Fur Meet, an event that has been held annually since 1999 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

History
Origins
MiDFur was originally Atpaw's planned December 1999 meet-up of five furs scattered around Australia. From Melbourne, Alpha X-ray. From Newcastle, Atpaw and Sepharen. From Adelaide, TimberFox and finally, from Brisbane, Whyrl.

During the course of planning, 'MiDFur' was decided upon to identify the event and word spread of the small private meet-up. However, as the time of the convention grew near, the founders began to withdraw from attendance due to real-life commitments, until all five had pulled out. A furry named Muse volunteered to step in and take up the reins. Since then, a different furry has organised the meet each year. However, none of the original founders of MiDFur attended the event they set into motion for several years.

Since then, planning of the event has become increasingly open to the public, mostly discussed on the Ozfurry mailing list and SA Furs discussion forum. Four of the five founders did end up attending MiDFur, though rarely in the same year.

Then in 2008, in the tenth year of the event, MiDFur made the transition from furmeet to convention. For the first time MiDFur was held at a hotel, there were local and international guests of honour and other events were introduced, includeding a charity auction, panels and party events every night. At the same time MiDFur was already extended from being a three day to a four day event.

Nowadays MiDFur continues to run as a convention. To date, the charity events have raised over $13,000 since 2007 and continues to have international guests, party events every night for four nights and a constantly rising level of organisation.

MiDFur 2006
MiDFur 2006 was organised by Scrapper and was held from December 15 to 17 with a "plushie" theme. About 55 furs were booked for the opening night feast. The event concluded with the South Fur Lands Binding Party, where awards were presented for different categories of plushies. Two different t-shirts were made available; one of them featured a colour design by Mye.

MiDFur 2007
In 2007, organisation of MiDFur was again headed by Scrapper, with other furs – Byftpup, ArcticPete, and Firey – organising parts of the event. It was held on the 14th to the 16th of December 2007. 127 furries attended the Friday dinner, which broke previous dinner attendance records. MiDFur shirts (featuring art by MistyStriker), hoodies, and lanyards were made available to attendants for purchase.

The eleventh MiDFur was the second year of MiDFur as a convention and was held at Rydges Hotel in Melbourne and had 247 attendees. The convention movie themed and so the convention area was decorated with furry mock-ups of movie posters, storyboards, lengths of 16mm film and other film related objects as well as several movie-centric events including a Hollywood style Gala Ball complete with red carpet. The announced guests were 2 Gryphon and Tim Albee. However Tim Albee could not make it due to catching Swine Flu. Instead, in keeping with the movie theme two Australian filmmakers were brought in as guests of honour; writer/director Stephan Elliott (The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Easy Virtue) and writer Sheridan Jobbins (Easy Virtue, Simon Townsend's Wonder World), both making their first appearances at a furry convention. Carnival

2010-04-02T04:44:22Z

Patronise: Added detail on work for MiDFur and ACTfur

Carnival (also known as Erika Vasos) is an anthro artist and furry born in 1986 in Tasmania, Australia. She uses a variety of traditional media along with some CG. She joined the online gallery deviantART in 2002. She is one of the main hosts of the Australian furry podcast series, ACTfur On Air and is also in charge of merchandise for the Melbourne furry convention, MiDFur.

Fursona
Carnival's fursona is a half crocodile, half panther anthro. The body is covered in brown felt-like fur, and her limbs below the elbows/knees are green lizard skin, as well as the lower part of the face and tail. Her hair is purple-ish, and her reptilian tail has purple spikes. Her usual clothing is a collar, baggy pants, and a tube-top type shirt.

ACTfur On Air is a fortnightly furry/anthro based podcast hosted by Carnival, Jeneara and Kraden that premiered on October 30th, 2008. The show is named after the Australian Capital Territory, which is where the show is recorded, and the pun of acting like a fur. The podcast was created by Kraden and Jeneara in late 2008, as they felt that there wasn't really enough of an Australian furry audio presence yet. Kell Bengal was originally recruited as a third host, but was later replaced by Carnival.

The focus of the show is on interviews, discussion and events inside the local and international furry fandom, as well as general talk about news and events. The show is recorded every second Thursday and uploaded on the following Wednesday. It was originally also streamed live, but due to technical limitations live broadcasts have been abandoned for the time being.

In May of 2009 the ACTFur On Air website was launched, with articles and embedded players as well as competitions and other extras. Their aim was to create a furry radio show that was more true to real radio, giving the community the ability to broadcast advertisements and announcements.

At the current point in time the ACTFur On Air website is undergoing a major re-design. The website is still under construction but the show has resumed broadcast as of February, 2010.

Hosts
Kraden: An avid artist and member of the local community, Kraden is well known for his eclectic behavior and boisterous personality. Having a love of podcasting in the past, he wanted to start a furry based show with local friends. Honest at heart but born without a filter between mouth and brain, he’ll always try to be interesting to listen to, even if he’s not politically correct about it.

Jeneara: Being new to the furry fandom Jeneara is most likely best known for her active role in the cosplay community. Her love of cute and fluffy things and her spiritual views on animals naturally guided her to the furry fandom. Bright and bubbly she is always up for a laugh. Jeneara always loves a good debate and is not afraid to go against the norm in her views, which always makes for interesting conversation.

Carnival: An enigmatic, energetic and colorful character, Carnival join the show off-site from Tasmania to take the place of Kell Bengal. Carnival is a very active Anthro artist, bolstered talker and old friend of kradens.

Kell Bengal: Although active in the fandom for almost a decade, Kell Bengal has kept a low-profile outside of the Canberra furry community. He has a PhD in robotic engineering and has years of technical experience building gadgets and gizmos. While his attitude is often dire and cynical, he nurtures a dry wit and indulges terrible puns. Once described as a store-house of useless information, Kell Bengal enjoys producing bizarre and unlikely facts to amuse and educate. In 2009 he moved to America to study robotics at Yale. The ACTfur team is going to miss him dearly, but he'll still be sending in segments under the new guise "Kells wonderful life".

MiDFur X (2008)

MiDFur 11: At The Movies (2009)
And the fourth guest of honour which was kept secret until his dramatic reveal on Friday night was Uncle Kage. 2 and Uncle Kage paired up for a charity comedy performance which raised $840 which was followed by the MiDFur charity auction. Taking Up Space is a internet radio show based in Canberra, Australia, which debuted in August, 2007. The show is hosted by Kraden, Emily, Nat, and Neil. It features multiple user segments, and covers topics ranging from entertainment to world news and Internet culture. The show is intentionally laid-back stylistically.

Unfortunately, due to internal problems the podcast was placed on an indefinite hiatus on July 14th 2008. Then on August 25th, 2008 Taking Up Space host Kraden returned to podcasting with a new show, ACTfur On Air.

Segments
*News Noms: The main hosts report news segments which they collected throughout the week, usually lasting no more than minute.
*That's Nasty!: An unusual food is described, then eaten on air.
*Fen Rants: Fenris rants about a controversial subject. This segment is intentionally modeled after the rants of 2.
*Silent Paranoia: RayLiehm investigates conspiracy theories, often ending his investigations with criticism of his subject.
*Blue Cat Central: Nanaki XIII sings about his life in a parodic manner. He accompanies his music with acoustic guitar and sometimes drums.

*Feedbork: Listener feedback from the last show is read.
*Epic Versus: Listeners are given two subjects and asked which would win in a fight. No formal vote is measured.
*Fun Task: Listeners are presented with an abstract challenge to respond to for the next episode.

MiDFur is short for Melbourne in December Fur Meet, an event that has been held annually since 1999 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Traditionally, the furmeet takes place in 'MiD'-December, two weeks before Christmas.

History

MiDFur 2006
MiDFur 2006 was organised by Scrapper and was held from December 15 to 17 with a "plushie" theme. About 55 furs were booked for the opening night feast. The event concluded with the South Fur Lands Binding Party, where awards were presented for different categories of plushies. MiDFur is short for Melbourne in December Fur Meet, an event that has been held annually since 1999 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Traditionally, the furmeet takes place in 'MiD'-December, two weeks before Christmas.

History

In 2007, organisation of MiDFur was again headed by Scrapper, with other furs – Byftpup, ArcticPete, and Firey – organising parts of the event. Klisoura

Patronise: Added catagory: sociology

Alex Osaki (born 6 August, 1985 in Baltimore, Maryland), more commonly known in the fandom as "Klisoura", is a writer, photographer, and amateur sociologist who currently resides in Lafayette, California, in the San Francisco Bay area. With friends Vulpecula and Ebon Scaled, he administers the FurIRC IRC system.

The man
Alex Osaki is a furry anthropologist, sociologist and writer. A longtime resident of Colorado, he moved to Lafayette, California in the fall of 2007 to take a job at a research firm.

Inside the fandom, he is an author, having written many highly-praised works, including the novella Sympathy for the Devil. He is a frequent poster on the message boards at Yiffstar, and since 2004 has run an IRC chatroom derived from that website.

Beyond writing, his primary focus within the fandom is an academic one. He holds a degree in anthropology with a focus on culture and gender studies and has attempted to bring a more scientific angle to the study of furriness. Since approximately 2000, he has sporadically worked on researching the furry fandom, and is behind a longterm surveying effort, entitled the Furry Survey. It originated as an attempt to dispel misconceptions about the fandom but has since become a more broad effort to gather data about it.

The avatar
Klisoura is a young Colorado archaeologist, a writer, and a curmudgeonly moderate conservative academic. He is a border collie.

Furry Survey

2008-10-22T16:21:58Z

Patronise: Um...did it properly this time.

:The Furvey is a personal, detailed questionnaire that originated on alt.lifestyle.furry

The Furry Survey, developed by Alex Osaki, is intended to compile information about people in the furry fandom. It is a 27-question web-based poll gathering information on geographic location, sexual orientation, and other common demographic issues. As of May 27, 2008, it had roughly 3555 respondents.

History
An initial version of the survey was compiled in late 2003 and posted to various Usenet groups and furry message boards. The current version, slightly rewritten in August 2007, has been running since April 4, 2005 and does not include data from the initial survey.

The stated goal of the survey is both "to improve the public perception of the fandom by providing a database of objective information" and, more objectively, to gather "primary-source data... critical to the understanding of any sociological demographic".

Summary
Please note that the survey is ongoing and continues to update. Unless otherwise noted, results quoted in this article are as of 6 September 2007.

In general, the results of the survey mesh with existing data, including that of the University of California, Davis campus. The survey reports that 80.7% of respondents were male, 82.7% self-identified as "Caucasian, non-Hispanic", and 72.4% reported their location as the United States (10.7% reported their location as Canada).

General Demographics
The survey indicates a comparatively young fandom, with nearly half (47%) of respondents reporting their age as between 15 and 19; the average age of 21 years is slightly younger than the UC-Davis indicated figure of 24.6 years. Correspondingly, more than 70% of respondents said they had considered themselves a furry for between 0 and 5 years; 2.8% said they had done so for less than 1.

The education level is roughly what one would expect from the age distributions. The percentage of respondents aged 25 or higher reporting a college degree, at 31%, is higher than the 28.4% reported by the US Census Bureau by a statistically meaningless amount.

Furries tended to report that they shied away from mainstream religions; less than a quarter reported adhering to a Christian belief system; there were only three Jews, one Muslim, and no Hindus or Buddhists. 10.1% reported their religion as "pagan"; the most popular answer, "other" (25.4%), includes a wide variety of people adhering to systems of their own design. 40% were agnostic or atheist.

Furry Issues
Self Identity
68.6% of respondents identified "strongly" or "extremely strongly" as human. 11.3%, asked to respond to the statement "I am predominantly human", said that they did not consider themselves human at all.

Sexual Orientation
Among respondents listing an orientation, 42.3% described themselves as heterosexual, 17.1% as homosexual, and 35.9% as bisexual. These numbers mesh to some degree with those reported by the University of California (32.7% heterosexual, 25.5% homosexual, 37.3% bisexual); however, the percentage identifying as heterosexual or homosexual differs by a statistically-significant degree in both cases. No explanation is offered for this difference.

Sexual Activity
Perhaps one of the more intriguing aspects comes from a series of questions asking respondents to describe how important they considered sex to be for their furry lives, as well as for the furry lives of others. A third question asked respondents to comment on the perception of the importance of sex by the public at large.

While nearly all (94.6%) answered that the public assumed sex played a "large" or "extremely large" role in the furry fandom, only 18% of respondents answered similarly for themselves. The distribution is strongly skewed towards a minimising of the importance of sex; more than half (50.4%) said it played a "small" or "extremely small" role.

However, they were more agnostic about their fellow furries. Well over half (57.4%) believed it was of "medium" importance to other furries; more than a quarter answered that they believed it was important to a "large" or "extremely large" degree. While 29.2% of respondents said sex played a "small" role to them, only 12.2% said they believed it played a small role for others. More drastically, while one-fifth of respondents (20.7%) said sex had an "extremely small" degree of significance to their furry lives, only 1.7% believed it played an extremely small role in the lives of other furries.

Zoophilia
15.7% of respondents self-identified as zoophiles, an amount which may or may not be different in a statistical sense from the general population (Alvarez and Freinhar's control groups reported a 10% and 15% prevalence respectively). No questions were asked as to the degree of activity, if any.

Respondents were agnostic leaning negative towards zoophiles. Of users reporting an opinion, a plurality (28.8%) described themselves as ambivalent, with 20% reporting positive feelings and around 40% reporting negative ones. If the answer is limited to non-zoophiles, the number reporting "negative" or "extremely negative" feelings increases to 54%, with "extremely negative", while remaining the second most common answer, increasing to a third of all respondents.

Activities Within the Fandom
A portion of the survey is dedicated to exploring what people consider to be important within the fandom. Respondents consistently reported creative activity; 48.8% described themselves as artists and 49.6% as authors. Correspondingly, 86% described graphic art as "important" or "extremely important"; 71.2% said the same about writing.

Besting both of these, 93% of respondents said that online communities were "important" or "extremely important", with 80.7% choosing the latter option--perhaps unsurprisingly given that the survey was administered online. Music was much less popular; only 21.8% of respondents described it as "important" or "extremely important"; 35.4% described it as "unimportant" or "extremely unimportant".

Although only a tenth of furries (11.7%) described themselves as a regular attendee of conventions, more than half (56.4%) identified conventions as being "important" or "extremely important"; only 4% of respondents believed them to be unimportant or extremely unimportant.

Miscellaneous
The data from the survey matches closely with that from the University of California in suggesting that ~82% of furries are not themselves fursuiters. On the whole, furries display a strong commonality of interests; 77.8% described themselves as being fans of science-fiction; 75.4% said they were fans of science and technology or computers. 58.1% described themselves as fans of anime; 54.8% as fans of role-playing games.

Greetings,

I’m here to tell you about the Furry Sociological Survey. You may or may not know, but a few years ago David Rust, a furry and history student, conducted a survey of 360 furs. Now in 2006, I hope to replicate his survey, as well as ask a few questions that Rust didn’t ask.

So why do this? The answer is: out of curiosity. Once the results have been collected I will collate them and present them online so that you can see what trends we have amongst us furs.

If you wish to complete the survey all you need to do is to download the Word document file or read the HTML file from this website: http://www.furnation.com/TheFurrySurvey/

Then just fill it in and email it to furrysurvey@gmail.com. Be sure to read the consent statement and instructions carefully.

With many thanks,
Kyle (furry and first year psychology student)

PS. There is no deadline by which the survey must be submitted. I’ll keep taking them as long as people keep sending them in. But it would be appreciated if you don’t take too long.

Also if you don’t have Microsoft Word on your computer just email me and I’ll send you version of the survey that you can work with, such as a txt file.

And also, you can see the original survey by Rust here: http://www.visi.com/~phantos/furrysoc.html

:Given that furries are all over world, wouldn't question 14 really need to specify the currency as well? Higgs Raccoon 22:11, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

:I've already got it under control, Higgs. I just use a currency converter to convert their national currency into US dollars. I already know their nationality from question 3, and I find it's easier to do this myself rather than make participants have to find their own currency converter and do it themselves. -- Kyle

::How do you know their nationality from question 3? It seems to ask for continent only? -- Higgs Raccoon 22:29, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

:True, but given that the salary options are in $10,000 integers all I need is the continent, given that currency values don't vary too much between countries within a continent. Actually, there hasn't been much need to convert currency as the majority of participants have been from North America.

:It might be helpful if you told us a little more about yourself. All we have right now is a first name, and I personally feel uncomfortable about disclosing some of the information in that survey to what is essentially an anonymous email address. Thanks. --Douglas Muth 23:53, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
::Hmmm...this person does seem to have an article here...looking at contributions from that IP, we find that they edited this article, which has a history of a few months here on WikiFur. Also, that article was formerly called Edge, of which there is a user here by a similar name that edited that article, leaving commit messages indicating this was them. So maybe not enough to make you comfortable, but at least it doesn't look like someone just showing up out of the blue. It'd be a rather elaborate cover up if it was one. Simba B 00:08, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

:::It does appear to be Kyle Evans - there is information on the survey on his Fur Affinity page here. -- Higgs Raccoon 00:23, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

::Kyle -- as a junior majoring in Biological Science/Psychology who performed a similar mass-survey this past spring (on human sexuality), I have to say that you're missing quite a few options for sexual preferences which could be seen as researcher bias. For example, you have polyandry, but not polygyny (multiple female partners). And a big one that's missing is asexuality (I forgot that on mine and had several people reply to my survey saying it should have been included). Those who identify as queer often prefer that as a label over 'bisexual', so that is something to consider adding as well. In addition, saying 'other' for gender is a little disrespectful to transgendered people; you should list transgendered as an option as well rather than lumping it with everything else under 'other'. Just my 2 cents. Spaz Kitty 00:24, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

::Ok Douglas, I'll tell you a little about myself. My name is Kyle C. Evans and I'm a furry (obviously) whose been in the fandom for around two years who resides in Australia. I'm also a psychology student. I completed my first year of psychology at Deakin University this year, recieving a Distinction for my first semester and a Credit for the second semester while doing a major in film. Also, as for disclosing sensitive information, you are completely annoymous. Given the number of surveys I'm getting I don't even look a the name or email of the person, so I don't remember a thing about them. And after the study is completed every single survey will be deleted. I hope this makes you feel more comfortable about the survey now, but if you want to know more about anything, feel free to ask! Also, Higgs can vouch for my existence - I met him briefly at MiDfur this year. -- Kyle Evans

::Thanks Spaz Kitty for pointing out those flaws in the survey. Quite a few people have also mentioned them, although you're the first to remark that "other" might be seen as insensitive, which definately isn't my intention. The reason for omitting transgender and asexuality as a response to the questions and just having a generic "other" option is because I'm fairly ignorant of these topics and I felt there might be other, less well known genders or sexualities, so I felt it would be easier to simply have an other option and let the participant describe their gender or sexuality. The ommision of polygyny was again, due to ignorance on my part. Although, in my defense, David Rust, who did the original study also made the same ommision. I've done surveys and studies while studying psychology at university, but the surveys were also preconstructed by our professors. I have to say, this survey has definately been a hands on learning experience. -- Kyle Evans

Yiff!

2008-01-31T14:13:57Z

Patronise: Added link to interview on Clawcast

:This page is about the musical. For the computer game, see Yiff! (video game).

Yiff! is the name of a forthcoming piece of musical theater themed around the furry fandom, created by composer/lyricist Tim Saward, co-lyricist Darren Deeks (in the UK) with consultancy from Vahn Fox (in the US). It is featured on a website at yiff.org.uk, was first performed in an abridged showcase concert-version in September 2007, and will be showcased again (again in abridged form) on 28 January and 3 February at the King's Head Theatre, Islington, London.

Videos of the first performance have now been posted to YouTube.

Polls on its website originally determined the basic plotline and sexuality of the main character as well as the musical style. Saward, who at the project's inception, was studying on a musical theater course, worked with artist/animator Kyle Evans (in Australia) to create animations for the show, to be mixed with live action, showing typing in chatrooms and the actions of online fursonae.

Plot and music are by Saward and lyrics by Saward and Deeks, with additional material by Vahn Fox. Consultants listed on the show include Stage Lion and Syrras

Yiff! is distinct from Furry Tales, another musical theater piece about the furry fandom, by American authors.

Plot Details
spoiler

So far, Saward has released the following plot details on his blog. Some details have also been drawn from videos posted on YouTube.

:The story is about Russ, a young English guy of 19, who is a fur. His mother worries about his apparent internet addiction, but he can't tell her what it's all about; she'd never understand.

:Russ goes online and starts to mix with the furry community, in particular with a mentor figure from the States called AzurePhoenix, under whose tutelage he establishes his own fursona, RedFox, and first hears of the concept of yiff - which in his mind becomes a holy grail - the thing that he wants most. He also starts an online romance with JadeVixen, the fursona of a girl in the States, but his mother is worried about the wolves of the world, and fears that Russ is too innocent and inexperienced not to be harmed.

:Russ and Jade continue to roleplay and yiff online and Russ quickly starts falling in love with her. After Primrose realises that Russ's sexuality is all bound up with his furriness, she takes action to make sure he can't express his furry side again by cutting off his internet connection.

:Driven by his mother's actions, Russ steals her credit card and flies to the United States to attend FurCon - a generic furry convention parodying Anthrocon. Here he spends days in the presence of other furs, loving every moment of it. He meets Gr1z, who makes Russ a conbadge to wear.

:Later on into the convention Russ learns that JadeVixen is present at the convention and goes to hunt her down; eventually finding her in fursuit, they begin a duet together, ending with him removing her fursuit head only to find that JadeVixen is actually a gay man who is already in a relationship with someone else attending the convention.

:Downhearted, Russ decides to leave the convention, only finding out that his mother's credit card has been blocked when he tries to pay. His mother contacts him telling how she's paid for a plane ticket home and that a taxi is waiting for him. Unable to return to his furry-devoid life back home, Gr1z offers to pay for his convention and invites Russ to live with him. He accepts, and goes on to live his new furry life.

Other sections are planned to follow this plot, which will deal with the Russ/Gr1z relationship, as it enters darker territory.

Characters
The following characters have been listed as part of the show:

;Russ/RedFox

:Russ is a 19-year-old fur from somewhere in England. He's wanted to be a fox since his childhood, and thinks he can realize it somehow some day. He's naive, but charming.

:RedFox is everything that Russ wants to be, and who he can be online. He's a dashing, handsome fox who can move at speed and hunt with tremendous cunning. He also knows how to seduce.

;Primrose Bacon

:Russ' mum is worried about her boy spending all his time on the internet in the company of people who seem weird. She worries about predators and wants to protect Russ because she's not sure he's ready for the world. She's a member of the Army of the Light - a conservative Christian group.

;Gr1z/AzurePhœnix

:Gr1z is a more experienced fur than Russ, aged 26, from the States. He's tried to realise his furry dreams, but life hasn't yet let that happen. He's a graphic designer by profession, originally named Griff, but he changed it in his script kiddie days.

:His fursona is a wise old bird of the furry community, more than once burned by it. Azure stands apart from other furs these days, but has useful words of advice, and occasional words of cynicism for newbies.

;Eric/Xanthinus

:Eric, a Geography student at De Montfort, got into furry a little before Russ/RedFox, also comes from the UK, and he's there to advise Russ and help him induct a little into the real life furry community.

:His fursona is an American yellow ferret with the power of invisibility, whom he roleplays in detailed RPGs based on the universe of a TV show.

;Jeannie/Malvina

:She wanted to be a librarian, but ended up having kids. She looks out for Russ/RedFox as he makes his journey into the darker, riskier parts of the furry world.

:Her fursona, a cat called Malvina, is a smart, glamorous librarian.

;JadeVixen

:Jade is like Russ - young, romantic and naive. She loves playing in character online. As a character, JadeVixen is a royal vixen in a future world. Confident and assured, she knows how to prowl, how to hunt and how to seduce. Yet holds a certain secret...

;Vernon

:Vernon sits at his computer through the day and late into the night, being someone he isn't. He leaves his computer to go to conventions.

;CanusWolf

:CanusWolf is hidden. He's the wolf on the path to grandmother's house; the hunter, the loner and the outsider. Beware.

Planned Performances
The first and currently only performance of Yiff! was a workshop performance running 40 minutes (made up of excerpts from the show, which is expected to run 70 or so minutes in total once complete). This was at Goldsmiths College, London (the launchpad of artists such as Damien Hirst and Damon Albarn), on 27 and 29 September 2007.

This will be followed on 28 January and 3 February by a London Fringe production of the showcase version, at the King's Head Theatre, Islington, London, with possibly a Manchester production in Summer 2008, featuring the entire show, coinciding with Confuzzled.

Tirrel

2007-10-03T10:22:29Z

Patronise: Added link to Vex Hates You and the Nut Job cartoons

Cerberus (A.K.A. Cerberusui, Tirrel) is a Macrofur artist living in Britain who used to run a (mainly) Macrofurry based comic titled Not Big and Not Clever, hosted on Macrophile.com under his user section. He also has a Fur Affinity site for unrelated works, including Flash animations.

Cerberus seems to enjoy exploring the less commonly explored areas of his chosen scene and presenting them in a humorous way. A reoccurring theme in his art is visualizing the frustrations and dangers posed to his single non-giant character as a result of living amongst much larger friends and family. The results of such dangers are often portrayed with horrific and graphic detail, however this is the only extreme trait of his work as he strictly avoids sex and related anatomy.

There's also a recurring theme of futility to Cerberus’ humour. Even though it's always the middle of a bright sunny day in his drawings, the comedy is almost always black. Nikita can't make friends, Snow can't be an adult, Rachel's schemes are always less clever than she imagines, Tetchie despises everything and Cerb gets to suffer physically for all their failings.

The majority of Cerberus’ works are drawn entirely with traditional mediums, namely ‘Sharpie’ markers and colouring pencils. It isn’t clear why he chooses to use such labour intensive methods, but it does give his work a distinct novelty that sets it apart from others.
He also enjoys trying out other forms of image making, having produced Flash animations (‘Raiders of the Trash’, 'The Ekkosangen' 'Vex Hates You' and the ‘The Nut Job’), as well as Sculpey models, textile dolls and cardboard sets.
