Osfer:

Alex Vance is a furry author, founder of the Bad Dog Books anthropomorphic publishing house, the furry fiction archive FurRag, and most notably, producer and author of the Heathen City series of graphic novels.

Bad Dog Books and FurRag
In 2005, his frustration at the death of furry fiction periodicals of significance led him to found a publishing operation and its flagship product, the periodical erotic furry fiction anthology FANG, and later that year, with the aid of a friend, set up a furry fiction archive intended as a more general-purpose counterpart to Yiffstar. Yiffstar's admin Toumal provided some coding assistance. Since then he has been involved in Yiffstar's transition to SoFurry, most recently designing the new interface for SoFurry 2.0 dubbed "Espresso".

RSI
In early 2006, he began suffering from repetitive strain injury, causing him pain in his fingers which required him to substantially moderate his typing. He announced his intention to put FANG on indefinite hiatus in order to let his fingers heal. With the help of Ben Goodridge, he founded Bad Dog Books in July 2006 and resumed development of FANG, which also made its publishing services available to third-party authors interested in bringing their works to print.

Bibliography
Until the deterioration of his fingers, Alex was an avid writer. Between 2004 and 2005, he wrote nineteen chapters of a serial story called Maranatha, totalling nearly two hundred thousand words. Besides occasionally contributing stories of his own to FANG, his fiction has appeared in Magazine issues 9 & 10 and Heat volume 4 from Sofawolf Press. His new graphic novel Heathen City, illustrated by Ayato, Distasty, Krahnos, Charha and Fel, was released on June 26 2008, with the subsequent issues released annually thereafter.

Appearances
So far, Alex has attended Further Confusion in January of 2008, where he gave a series of four writing panels, continuing the Bad Dog Boot Camp panel started by Ben Goodridge at Anthrocon '07. Most recently he appeared at Eurofurence 2010 where he presented a series of panels about writing, editing and publishing.

External links
Osfer
* alexfvance.com, his personal website.
Osfer: Removed references to the defunct Free Press Program.

Bad Dog Books is a publishing house founded by Alex Vance which employs modern print-on-demand technology to publish anthropomorphic fiction.

Originally named Osfer's Joint Publications, its flagship product was FANG, a serial anthology of furry fiction intended to reinvigorate widespread interest in printed anthropomorphic fiction. To emphasize its focus on imagination over imagery, FANG featured no artwork whatsoever, with the exception of the iconic BDB logo by Kamui.

Ben Goodridge joined in spring of 2006, as Alex's health did not allow him to continue serving as FANG's editor and when the anthology was restarted in July 2006, Bad Dog Books was created to continue and expand OJP's original vision.

Beside FANG, BDB produces a line of novels by authors hand-picked by the staff. As of January 2010, five novels are available, including White Crusade by Ben Goodridge.

Bad Dog Books produces its books in trade paperback, black and white with a full-color cover, typically for a list price of $19.99. As of 2007, BDB's books are available directly through the Bad Dog Bookstore as well as through FurPlanet.

Bad Dog Books are more expensive than most paperbacks due to the print-on-demand method of publication. Print-on-demand has a very high unit price, but does not require the bulk printing and significant initial investment of traditional offset printing, resulting in lower average cost for small print runs. This lower initial investment minimizes the risk involved with the production of any particular title, freeing Bad Dog Books from large financial concerns and conferring a substantial measure of freedom and flexibility in the projects it selects and products it publishes.

Print-on-demand allows the manufacture of books with a very fast turnaround. FANG was first conceived in June 2005 and was released to the public three months later -- in those three months, a website was created, authors were attracted, submissions were reviewed and edited, and the book was proofed for printing. Considering the speed and efficiency of print-on-demand publication and the absence of up-front investments, the actual conversion of a print-ready text into a publishable document is a comparatively swift process, owing primarily to BDB's experience in publishing.

Logo
In early 2006, Kamui was contracted to design a logo for Bad Dog Books. The logo was to bring to mind the sleek black premium style of the FANG books that were BDB's flagship product, as well as the gritty, mature energy of BDB's other books.

Working from keywords such as 'dog', 'smoke', 'cool' and 'danger' Kamui came up with several design concepts, finally pitching the two prelimenary logos shown here. The first was deemed too geometric and static, the second too heavily stylized, resembling the visual style of White Wolf, publishers of, among others, the Werewolf line of RPG books.

By fusing the stark geometry of the first with the rough-edged energy of the second,, the final design was achieved. This logo graces all BDB products.

The canine character depicted (also informally known as Jules Reve or, more commonly, as the Bad Dog) is not an existing character or representation thereof.

Graywolf produced a variation on the BDB Logo for the "Year of the Bad Dog" promotional campaign in 2007.

External links
* Bad Dog Books Website
* Free Press Program on Bad Dog Books website
* Bad Dog Books Blog
* Bad Dog Books LiveJournal
* Bad Dog Books for sale on Furplanet

Bad Dog Books
Publishing companies

ru:Bad Dog Books
sv:Bad Dog Books

Osfer: /* Publication */ Added info about upcoming Vol. 2

Heathen City is a serial graphic novel written by Alex Vance, illustrated by Ayato, Distasty, Krahnos, Charha and Fel.

Described as a modern, erotic thriller, Heathen City is an adult title with strong gay themes, graphic sex, strong language and violence. The gritty, contemporary setting and the sense of peril and isolation in an urban environment show the influence of works like Sin City and Blacksad. The art style and the promotional materials emphasize the cinematic quality of the title, with much the original promotional artwork in widescreen letterbox format.

Volume One is published by Bad Dog Books, and printed and sold by FurPlanet. It debuted on June 26, 2008, to coincide with Anthrocon 2008. Volume Two is available for pre-order from FurPlanet with scheduled debut date of 2009 July 2 to coincide with Anthrocon 2009.

Synopsis
Owen Zelazny, a hustler who has decided to quit his life of prostitution, finds himself unintentionally entangled in what appears to be a criminal, political conspiracy. With his new lover Ruy Ortega in tow, Owen seeks out an old friend, Q. I. Malloy, whom he hasn't spoken to in three years. With the threat of pursuers at their heels, the burden of secrets that each of the characters bear, and old flames rekindled, tensions rise as they traverse the globe in a struggle for survival. Action takes place in London, Paris, Shanghai, and the Pacific Ocean.

Setting
The world in which Heathen City takes place is nominally identical to the real world as of 2008. Reference is made to the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans, U.S. President Bush, and notable cosmopolitan cities.
There are explicit differences, geographic and social. While all characters are anthropomorphic animals, there seems to be little relation between their ethnicity and their species (the antagonist Caulfield and his mother are cougars, despite being of English descent). At a bar in Shanghai the character Ruy remarks that there are no Asians present, indicating scent plays a substantial role in recognizing geographic origin.
The most substantial difference between the Heathen City universe and ours is the existence of Maranatha City, ostensibly located in Florida, on the fictional Blood Bay Peninsula.

Characters
* Owen Zelazny, an American hustler, wolf, 27 years old, on the verge of retiring and starting a new career
* Q. I. Malloy, an English Doberman, former burglar, pickpocket and drug dealer who was at one point incarcerated and is now of uncertain legal status.
* Ruy Ortega is a secondary character in Heathen City. He is Owen's current lover and is dragged into the whole story by Owen, who calls him for help after he is attacked. Ruy at first seems like any normal guy, but soon it becomes clear that he is more than that, as captain Dolan remembers him for his youth.
* Tony Caulfield is the principle antagonist. A sophisticated, manipulative and wealthy English cougar with strong sadistic and homicidal tendencies, he pursues Owen, and deals harshly with anyone who might hold a clue to aid his hunt.

For more information see List of characters in Heathen City.

Promotion
Promotion for the upcoming release began in early October 2007, when FurNation and FurPlanet showed their support by posting the promotional posters on their front pages, causing the hit counter on the Heathen City a 2000 hit spike in 48 hours. After vocal support from Wookiee, artists such as ArtDecade, Decaf, and K-9 showed their support by contributing fan art of some of the characters, which attracted even more attention.

Merchandise
At Further Confusion 2008, FurPlanet sold booklets of promotional artwork, and gave away complimentary HC-branded condoms. A deck of playing card decks was released in tandem with Volume 1 at Anthrocon 2008, featuring art by Graywolf, Vahnfox, Charha, Fel, TheRGHU, SilverFenrir, MINE CHAOS and Fabercastel.

Publication
On May 18, 2008, it was announced on the Heathen City mailing list that Volume One would be released on June 26, 2008, where FurPlanet would sell copies from their tables at Anthrocon. As of October, 2008, it is available for order from FurPlanet, Yiffing.com and United Publications. Volume One sold out of all available copies at Anthrocon '08. It was also a sell-out hit at Eurofurence 2008, and was available at Rainfurrest 2008.

Volume 2 will be released at Anthrocon 2009 and available for discounted pre-order from FurPlanet. Alex Vance remains the writer, with Krahnos, ZooShaman, Vahnfox and Blue_Panther each illustrating one of the four stories that comprise this issue, with supporting coloring work from Fel and Charha, a cover by Kaji and additional illustrations by West and Dajan.

External links
*Heathen City homepage
*Bad Dog Books homepage
*FurPlanet pre-order page
*Heathen City mailing list

maranatha

sv:Heathen City

Drawn by Ayato, colored by Distasty]]Owen Zelazny is a wolf and a hustler, one of the protagonists in the serial graphic novel Heathen City by Alex Vance. Born in 1981, Owen came to Maranatha City in late 1999, having begun selling his body at an early age. He is youthful, energetic, very comfortable with his chosen profession, which he takes very seriously.
Residence: Originally from New Orleans, Owen lived in a small apartment in a dilapidated building in Maranatha City. After his departure from Maranatha City, he was most recently seen in London, not far from Piccadilly Square, though it's unknown whether he resides in that city.
Occupation: Owen is a prostitute, servicing exclusively male clients, preferring the term hustler over escort because of his preference for the quick and anonymous servicing of a large number of clients rather than 'spending the night' with one particular customer. Owen continued to ply this trade even after Maranatha City, though by the time he appears in Heathen City he is very close to 'retiring' fro the profession to find another direction for his life.
Relationships: Owen's oldest friend and lover, in all but name, is Q. I. Malloy, a dobermann burglar and drug dealer, with whom he first traveled to Maranatha City.
Relationships: Owen's oldest friend and lover, in all but name, is [[Q. Art by kamui.]]

It debuted on June 26, 2008, to coincide with Anthrocon.

Osfer:

maranatha

Maranatha City is a fictional city in the United States, the setting of the erotic story series Maranatha and heavily referenced in the graphic novel Heathen City, both written by Alex Vance. Originally its location was unspecified, though Heathen City definitively indicated that the city is located in the state of Florida, on the Blood Bay peninsula, connected to the mainland by St. Lucy's bridge.

In the Maranatha story series
Located in an originally unspecified region of what is presumably the United States, Maranatha City is an urban dystopia -- distinct from K. M. Hirosaki's Blue Forest City in that the commercial rather than the industrial sector is dominant.

In some ways resembling post-Wall Berlin, the city has a low population for its size; entire regions of the city lie empty as a result of economic shifts some time before the story started. Lacking a medium middle class, Maranatha City is characterized by a strong separation, both economically and geographically, between the upper middle class and upper class on the one side, and the working class on the other.

Crime is highly organised and regimented. It is implied that the police force is largely corrupt and disinterested in any criminal activity outside the city's prosperous center.

In the Heathen City graphic novels
Two of the protagonists of Heathen City are survivors of an event known as the fall of Maranatha. An unanticipated geological cataclysm which occurred in 2005, shortly after Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of New Orleans, a large portion of the city's center collapsed.

In addition to the casualties caused by the sudden collapse of so much of the city, the geological shift freed a stratum of lethally toxic dust, later labeled as TCT.

Furthermore, the rescue efforts in New Orleans had depleted the country's already scant resources, leaving the inhabitants without support. The collapse of St. Lucy's bridge severed the only connection to the mainland.

Reports vary on the number of survivors, from 6000 to as little as a few hundred.

The toxicity of the TCT dust hampered any reclamation efforts, and, leaning on innovations by Russia in dealing with the Chernobyl incident, construction began on a 'sarcophagus' to shield the city from wind and rain, to alleviate any risk of TCT contamination through wind or groundwater. Construction was never completed.

At the start of Volume 1 of Heathen City, it is indicated that the United States government was making arrangements to sell Maranatha City and the Blood Bay peninsula, as it could no longer justify the cost of maintaining the sarcophagus and it seemed unlikely that the city would become habitable again.

RSI
In early 2006, he began suffering from repetitive strain injury, causing him pain in his fingers which required him to substantially moderate his typing. He announced his intention to put FANG on indefinite hiatus in order to let his fingers heal. Drawn by Ayato, colored by Distasty]]Owen Zelazny is a wolf and a hustler, one of the protagonists in the serial graphic novel Heathen City Alex Vance. Born in 1981, Owen came to Maranatha City in late 1999, having begun selling his body at an early age. He is youthful, energetic, very comfortable with his chosen profession, which he takes very seriously.

Residence
Originally from New Orleans, Owen lived in a small apartment in a dilapidated building in Maranatha City, with neighbors Double Bill and Mrs Ackerby and her dog Pickles, under the rule of landlord Butterfly. His second-story apartment faces into a courtyard with clear line of sight from Nicky Marlowe's apartment on the other side.

After his departure from Maranatha City, he was most recently seen in London, not far from Piccadilly Square, though it's unknown whether he resides in that city.

Occupation
Owen is a prostitute, servicing predominantly male clients, preferring the term hustler over escort because of his preference for the quick and anonymous servicing of a large number of clients rather than 'spending the night' with one particular customer.

Owen continued to ply this trade even after Maranatha City, though by the time he appears in Heathen City he is very close to 'retiring' fro the profession to find another direction for his life.

Relationships
Owen's oldest friend and lover, in all but name, is Q. I. Malloy, a dobermann burglar and drug dealer, with whom he first traveled to Maranatha City. While sexually active and emotionally intimate with each other, the pair never had a relationship in the romantic sense, and only briefly shared an apartment in their early days in Maranatha before going their separate ways.

Owen has most recently been seen in various Soho nightclubs in the company of a tiger named Ruy. The precise nature of this relationship is unclear, though Owen's decision to quit his life of prostitution came very soon after his first encounter with Ruy.

Trivia
Owen is technically Jewish, and is known to occasionally uphold certain aspects of the faith, electing to eat kosher on significant days such as Hanukkah, Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashannah. The arbitrary nature of his observances and, of course, his profession, indicate that this is motivated less by actual belief in the Jewish scriptures, and more by his upbringing, and the comfort of familiar rituals.

Heathen City
Owen Zelzny appears as one of the core cast of the upcoming serial graphic novelHeathen City, written by Alex Vance, illustrated by Ayato and digitally colored by Distasty, Krahnos, Charha, and Fel. He had previously appeared in Alex Vance's unfinished story series Maranatha.

Yiffstar's admin Toumal provided some coding assistance.

Besides occasionally contributing stories of his own to FANG, his fiction has appeared in Magazine issue 9 and Heat volume 4 from Sofawolf Press.

Heathen City
Alex is currently working on an upcoming graphic novel by the name of Heathen City, with art by Ayato and colored by Distasty. Promotion for the upcoming release began in early October, when FurNation and FurPlanet showed their support by posting the promotional posters on their front pages, causing the hit counter on the Heathen City a 2000 hit spike in 48 hour.

A promotional campaign including on-line advertisements on Google Adsense, ProjectWonderful and the ad rotation on the Keenspot comics website is currently underway.

After vocal support from Wookiee, artists such as ArtDecade, Decaf and K-9 have showed their support by contributing fan art of some of the characters, which has attracted even more attention.

The first volume of this graphic novel will be available in early 2008.

External links
Osfer
* Bad Dog Books, home of FANG, the FANG Presents line of novels and Bad Dog Books' publishing services.
* Heathen City homepage
* FurRag Fiction Archive
* Osfer's writings on VCL
* Osfer's writings on AnthroArchives
* Osfer's writings on Yiffstar
* Heat Volume 4
* FurNation Magazine 9

Born in 1981, Owen came to the Maranatha City in late 1998, having begun selling his body at an early age. He is youthful, energetic, very comfortable with his chosen profession, which he takes very seriously.

Residence
Owen lives in a small apartment in a delapidated building, with neighbours Double Bill and Mrs Ackerby and her dog Pickles, under the rule of landlord Butterfly. His second-story apartment faces into a courtyard with clear line of sight from Nicky Marlowe's apartment on the other side.

Occupation
Owen is a prostitute, servicing predominantly male clients, preferring the term hustler over escort because of his preference for the quick and anonymous servicing of a large number of clients rather than 'spending the night' with one particular customer. Concerns about STDs are negated by his regular use of the clunky, laborious and extremely uncomfortable Immunizer at a local free clinic.

His oldest friend and in all but name lover is [[Q.
