Furry BlackLight
Furry BlackLight (commonly abbreviated FBL) is the largest furry convention in France. It brings together many furries from all around the country and also from Europe. The convention has been running since 2013 and is growing.

It traditionally takes place around November 1st and has always been hosted in the Ile-de-France area. It went from a small fur meet hosted in Maurepas (Yvelines) to France’s biggest convention now in Paris (Saint-Denis), in the one of the biggest monuments of the capital, the Pleyel Tower, now rebranded H4 Hotel Wyndham.

French used to be the main language when FBL was still a furmeet, but as it switched to the convention format, it was decided to make communication available in English to welcome furs from outside the country. The event is now held in both languages, English being primarily used in communication and official events.

The convention features activities such as a Dealers' Den, dances, competitions, shows, sometimes a concert, panels like fursuit games, and several lounges for fursuiters, artists, and gamers.

Organisation
Furry BlackLight is officially run by a French non-profit association (law of 1901) registered under the name "Anthrofur”.

In comparison to most other furcons, FBL does not host Guest of Honors nor does it contribute to charities, furry or not.

History
Created by Furnace in January 2013 under the name Fursuit Blacklight, the first iteration was a one-day furmeet organized in honor of Hai, a German fur. Bringing together 17 attendees, this first day of under-blacklight activities (karting, minigolf, laser game, etc.) was a great success and was subsequently repeated, marking the start of an annual tradition.

Back then, the french fandom was small and mostly used to gather during the annual Furmeet de Lyon in April, one of the biggest furmeet in the country organised by Naffie. With its disappearance after its last edition in 2015, furries slowly turned towards FBL, which was getting popular on the french forum FranceFurs.

In 2014, for its third edition, the furmeet was organised around a week-end with activities split during two days and most furs gathered around the Première Classe hotel located in the activities area before moving in a bigger one located nearby, the Mercure, which also offered meeting spaces for the event.

Expansion and evolution
Over the years, FBL has seen its attendance grow, requiring an increasingly complex organization. In 2017, a "board" was created to support the management of the growing event, allowing a quality experience to be maintained while meeting attendees' expectations.

In 2018, the board changed the venue's name from "Fursuit Blacklight" to "Furry BlackLight". This change reflected a desire to represent the diversity of furry fandom better, as the former name might have suggested that the event was mainly aimed at fursuiters, which was not in line with what FBL intended to be, an open to all furry community members. This year also marks its first try in a convention format.

With the format change and the new board, the convention took a level up and moved into a bigger hotel in 2019 and went to the other side of the Ile-de-France area, in the now closed Hyatt Regency Charles de Gaulle (Tremblay-en-France), whose name was coming from the nearby airport.

Covid-19 Pandemic
In 2020, Furry BlackLight was not held in person due to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. A virtual dealer's den was proposed on Discord on October 30 and 31, 2020.

Post-Covid changes
In 2021, FBL is the first event to take place right after the end of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Following some unexpected difficulties in negotiating with the Hyatt and for the safety and comfort of everyone, the staff took the decision to move to a new convention hotel a month before the convention and moved closer to the airport Charles de Gaulle in the Hilton Charles de Gaulle.

Chairman Handover
In 2023, Furnace left the board of directors and the remaining members took over the venue's management and the Anthrofur association. This handover marks an important milestone in the convention's history, ensuring its continuity and paving the way for new opportunities with the introduction of new board members. The chairmanship of the event and association was handed to Naalik.

With the departure of Naalik and Orthank in 2025, the chairmanship was split between Kassn who took the presidency of the association Anthrofur, and Luuwaku who took the chairmanship of the event itself.

Renewal
The year 2025 marks a brand new year for the convention as its location switched to a hotel located in Saint-Denis (Paris). The hotel is the one of the highest monuments of the capital, the Pleyel Tower, now rebranded H4 Hotel Wyndham, featuring 700 rooms split across 40 floors, a Skybar (with a stunning view on the Eiffel Tower and the Sacré-Cœur) hosting the Survival Party, a swimming pool and convention centre attached to the tower.

Win a fursuit
Since 2017, FBL offers the unique opportunity to win a fursuit. As an attendee, you are automatically added to a lottery to win a partial fursuit. Since its third edition, the lottery takes place right after the opening ceremony.

The original idea was brought by Brek and he offered a partial fursuit for every edition from 2017 to 2024. After FBL 12, he decided to hand over the fursuit building part to others. Nowadays, he still manages the Win a Fursuit as an event, but collaborates with other fursuit builders like SewShi in 2024 and Sifuraw Studio in 2025.

2017
FBL 6 (October 27-29) was the first to take place at the Mercure hotel in Maurepas, as well as the first to include a Fursuit Lounge, managed by Orthank and several other rooms directly into the hotel, including a Main Stage.

2018
This year, to encourage non-fursuit participants to join the convention, the name is changed to "Furry BlackLight". The event was also extended to a four-day event and took place on November 1-4, 2018, in the Mercure Hotel in Maurepas. This edition featured a Dealers' Den for the first time, and a special menu was offered in conjunction with the hotel, which proved to be a great success, resulting in long waits in the dining room, as the hotel teams were not expecting this.

2019
FBL 8 "Alchemy and Black Magic" took place on October 31-November 3 in a new hotel: the Hyatt Regency Paris Charles de Gaulle next to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport. Following this change of venue, the outdoor activities are removed in favor of new events, the return of a theme, a mermaid panel at the pool, games over several days, riddles, ... A total of 317 attendees registered from 9 different countries, including 129 fursuiters and 55 artists.

2021
FBL 9 "Space Travel" took place on October 29 to November 1, 2021. Due to some difficulties with the previous venue, a new hotel hosted the event: the Hilton Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. This edition was also marked by the presence of several measures related to COVID (wearing a mask, no snack exchange, ...) but it still allowed more than 500 people to meet and enjoy the return of activities like the Just Dance tournament or the Furry Olympics, and some new panels like the Watch & Talk.

2022
FBL 10 took place on October 29 to November 1, 2022. This 10th edition welcomed 655 furries from 17 countries with the "Steam Ages" theme. The second fursuit dance contest of the FBL was organised with 17 contestants, and the snack exchange was also back at this edition. The convention also introduced "Unleash the Beast" as well as "Fifty Shades of Gear" with an After-Dark Dealers' Den, new meet & greets, and more flexible rules for wearing certain accessories such as puphoods or latex outfits during some dances and parts of the hotel. Finally, a new webapp was introduced, which included the events list, maps of the hotel, news, contact information, photoshoot registration and other features.

2023
FBL 11 took place from November 1 to 5, 2023 and was the first 5-day edition. The theme was "Welcome to Olympus", and this edition, which was handled by a reduced number of board members, saw a number of adjustments, such as a main stage twice as large during the ceremonies, using the part of the room reserved for the Dealers' Den the rest of the time, and a new registration system that greatly reduced waiting time on site. At the closing ceremony, new board members were introduced, as well as a nearly 10-minute aftermovie, shot on-site by Murrpy.

2024
FBL 12 took place from October 30 to November 3, 2024. The theme "Ride the Retrowave" has been unveiled at the 2023 closing ceremony with a dedicated video made by Oskar. For the fourth time, an aftermovie was produced on site by Murrpy and PotitCerf, in a cooperative format, and unveiled at the closing ceremony..

It was the last edition held in the Hilton Paris Charles de Gaulle. The closing ceremony featured an important announcement about the convention moving to a new hotel in Paris (Saint-Denis), the H4 Hotel Wyndham. It features a brand new convention centre, a refreshed tower of 40 floors with a view on Paris and opened its doors in 2024.

2025
With the new location, the convention unveiled a refreshed identity with an updated logo and new colour schemes for a new visual identity.

FBL 13 took place from October 29 to November 2, 2025. The theme "Gold Rush" has been unveiled at the 2024 closing ceremony with a dedicated video made by PotitCerf. For the fifth time, an aftermovie was produced on site by Murrpy and PotitCerf, showcasing a "Manifesto", the core that drives the staff of the convention. It was again unveiled at the closing ceremony.

In comparison to most other furcons, FBL does not host Guest of Honors nor does it contribute to charities, furry or not.

It features a brand new convention centre, a refreshed tower of 40 floors with a view on Paris and opened its doors in 2024.
