The giraffe was given a full makeover/rebuild in late 2008 to mid 2009, with its new look debuted at the 2009 Maker Faire. The hydraulic drive system was rebuilt; all manual controls were removed and the control system was converted to radio control; the frame was upgraded and the wooden floor replaced with plexiglass panels; and the entire machine was disassembled, sand blasted, and sprayed with pearlescent sunset orange paint. The electronic control system was changed from Ethernet to USB, making the giraffe itself a USB peripheral.

Second Life is an online virtual world consisting of hundreds of interconnected large-scale areas populated by interactive avatars, whose players may choose to take any form they can create or purchase. The major form of short-distance transportation is flight, while transportation between areas is typically performed through teleportation; both abilities are innate. The "main grid" is restricted to those 18 or over, as some regions contain strong violence or sexual content. A teen version for those 13 to 17 is also available.

Second Life has over 573,000 registered users and 257,000 active users as of August 26, 2006; logged-in users range from 3,000 to 8,000 at any one time. The system is funded through a combination of account subscriptions and "tier" (a form of land value tax). Users have the option to own or rent land parcels in a variety of sizes - as in real life, some owners may zone their land to restrict certain activities, such as commercial development. Business in the game's virtual currency (exchangeable for real-world funds) is encouraged by the Linden Research, and a variety of content vendors have sprung up to meet demand.

The furry fandom has a major presence in Second Life, with multiple areas devoted to providing accommodation, entertainment and creative services specifically for members of the furry community. Themes range from the pedestrian to the bizarre, although trees are common in furry haunts. Each user can create their own objects from the inbuilt primitives, but the majority of users rely in part on objects created and sold by others. These include body parts for avatars, accessories, vehicles (which may be purely aesthetic or provide extra functionality), toys, pose balls for avatar animation, and scripts to provide extra features (like "push" and "shield" defensive/offensive capabilities).

Outline
Second Life was started in 2003 as a project by "Linden Research, Inc." doing business as "Linden Lab".
Second Life's primary attraction has always been the level of customization; from the ground under your feet to the clouds in the sky. This was quite literal since the game's developers intended for the user to be able to create the world to their desire, as is quoted in the Second Life overview on its site:

:"Second Life is a virtual world - a 3D online persistent space totally created and evolved by its users. Within this vast and rapidly expanding place, you can do, create or become just about anything you can imagine. Built-in content creation tools let you make almost anything you can imagine, in real time and in collaboration with others."

Second Life is considered by some to be a variant of the Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, or MMORPG for short. The true answer to the question "is it such a game?" is "yes and no" - Second Life is technically not a role-playing game by itself. Rather, it is a platform that allows games and worlds to be built within its framework. It is better classified as a richly graphical multiple user chat kingdom (MUCK) rather than an MMORPG. Some go so far as to just call it a metaverse, which isn't that far of a stretch. Membership requires a credit card or SMS-capable cellphone, both for security reasons and because each region has its own content rating, from PG to Mature (which can be very mature at times).

Second Life has become one of the popular forms of online entertainment for members of the furry fandom; at last count there were over 500 furries registered as Second Life users, and the true number is probably several times that by now. This arose out of the fact that the avatars, humanoid objects representing the user, are very customizable and the game's disposition for allowing users to create anything has made the concept of a virtual "fursuit" possible. These consist of a variety body parts which are attached to the user's avatar. These parts include tails, wings, legs, and so on - some have even made complete sets that resemble mythical beasts such as dragons, complete with scripted flame effects. Such avatar addons can be sold by their creators, who retain the ability to control distribution of their objects as part of their copyright, enforced by inbuilt copy restrictions. Some choose to give works away for free, for apparently altruistic or promotional purposes.

The high interactivity is also a plus for online social networks - as a result, various furry communities began to pop up in the game and are now a sizable force in the virtual world. In the October 2005 issue of Computer Games, "Furries" (used as a proper noun) were noted as a major userbase in Second Life in an article about the use of MMOs for self-actualization.

Although signing up for a new account requires a credit card or an SMS-capable cell phone, current members have the option of changing their billing information in the members area so their membership fees can be deducted through PayPal.

Age policy
As with most social environments on the Net, there is no way to tell inside the game how old someone really is. The game's Terms of Service state quite clearly you must be over the age of 18 to enter the "main grid" of Second Life. If anyone is found to be under 18 in the main grid, they will be banned from the game and all money and inventory will be forfeit. It is generally assumed that almost all players in the main grid are over the age of 18.

Second Life rates the individual sections of the game as Mature, or PG, with other possible ratings. These ratings help moderate the behaviour of people that populate the various sections of the game, as they won't tolerate someone breaking the PG rating by performing a Mature-rated act in a PG-rated zone. The rating system is not in place to keep children out of areas in SL; it is there because many adults don't want to be exposed to adult material during their time in the game or to take a break from it for a time by visiting a PG sim. Luskwood is a prime example of a furry PG sim, safe from displays of naked hermaphrodites with a huge phallus and even bigger breasts parading around as one might see in a mature furry sim like Worlds (technically they are not supposed to be visable from a casual flyover).

Teen Grid
Late in 2005, Second Life created a separate version of its game designed with teens in mind, strictly separating those 18 years of age or greater from those 17 and under. Server-side tracking differentiates teen users from adult users, sending teens to the Teen Grid instead of the main grid. The Teen Grid has different rating policies than the main version; being made for teenagers, none of the regions are rated Mature and nothing may exceed the general PG13 to PG17 rating spans.

* Website: http://teen.secondlife.com/

Environment and Economy
Costs and land ownership
Membership of Second Life falls into one of two categories: "Basic" and "Premium". Basic accounts are free to create an incur no monthly fee. If you wish to have more than one account however, secondary accounts (Alts) incur a one-off fee of US$9.95, which may be paid with a credit card, or a positive PayPal balance.

Basic accounts are subdivided into "verified" and "unverified". A verified account means that the user has submitted a credit card, PayPal account, or telephone number to verify their identity. However, users may create an account without any verification of their identity. This was a highly unpopular move that sparked protests. In response to this, Linden Labs added the ability to prevent unverified users from entering a parcel of land, and introduced an option to the LSL function llRequestAgentData() to return an agent's payment status as one of:

* No Payment Info on File
* Payment Info on File
* No Payment Info on File AND Payment Info Used (Only Beta/Lifetime users fall under this status)
* Payment Info on File AND Payment Info Used

The fears of "open registration" were that it would lead to an influx of minors on the main grid - both opening Linden Labs to potential lawsuits and its users; and allow griefers to quickly and freely create a new account as soon as one account is banned for their misdeeds.

Premium accounts come at a rate of US$9.95 each month, with discounts for paying quarterly or annually -- $22.50, and $72, respectively. The premium accounts come with the privilege of owning 512 square meters of land, known as 'First Land'. This is approximately 1/256 of 1 simulator, or "not much". They also come with a weekly stipend of L$400. The ability to acquire additional amounts of land bring an additional charge, called land tier.

* US$195.00/month: 65,536 square meters - Entire Region
* US$125.00/month: 32,768 square meters - 1/2 Region
* US$75.00/month: 16,384 square meters - 1/4 Region
* US$40.00/month: 8,192 square meters - 1/8 Region
* US$25.00/month: 4,096 square meters - 1/16 Region
* US$15.00/month: 2,048 square meters - 1/32 Region
* US$8.00/month: 1,024 square meters - 1/64 Region
* US$5.00/month: 512 square meters - 1/128 Region

These are the official Linden rates - it is possible to find island owners (see below) who will sell or rent land for lower rates, usually with some restrictions as to its use. It is also possible to get low-cost rented accommodation with no specific land ownership, and to own land without a premium account through a "group" to which the land is deeded. Many users own no land or accommodation at all - it is not required for object ownership, although object creation can be another matter.

Land, once purchased, may be traded between users at market rates. Large contiguous plots of land (or even relatively small plots of land in a busy place) can often sell at a hefty premium. Linden's tier remains the same whatever the selling price.

Referrals
Each user who joins Second Life gets an unique referral link. Giving this link to people who have yet to sign up, and getting them to do so used to credit the user with a certain amount of Linden Dollars -- the in-world currency. Since late January 2006, only premium account signups will result in a bonus, of L$2500, staggered over a three month period, where you get L$500 on the spot, another L$500 after one month, another L$500 after two months, and the final L$1000 after three months, to prevent gaming of the premium account referral bonus.

Currency
Users can buy or sell their Linden Dollars (L$) from within the game using the Lindex money market run by Linden Research. There are also third-party exchange services.

Exchanges can be performed with any number of Linden Dollars. The Lindex calculator will give you an idea of what you'll be receiving as a result of your sale. The amount that you receive as a result of your sale gets placed into your account, where you may have it applied to anything you owe for your account if you are a premium user, or may have it sent to you via PayPal for a US$1 charge. For larger amounts, you may also have a check mailed to you for a fee - US$5 if you're inside the United States, or US$15 for locations outside of the United States.

There are some furs who extract do this with the earnings from their businesses (custom avatar creation, generic avatar vending, etc.), turning it into profit that allows them to do whatever they want to pay for, up to, and including starting their own islands. Historically-speaking, the L$ is a relatively volatile currency prone to bouts of inflation. It can therefore be a good idea to remove any significant sums from the game, unless they are to be spent quickly in-game.

Islands and other locations
Islands are user-owned simulators within Second Life. You can buy your own island but the price to play is pretty steep: $1250 for start up costs and a server (you don't own the server itself though and due to multiple CPU servers, you are effectively buying space on a single CPU for your island), as well as $195 a month tier. Islands, as opposed to the mainland, get a dedicated processor to run on. Mainland sims (regions) may have to share resources with up to 3 other neighboring regions. An additional benefit is that purchasing an island allows you to contact the Linden Concierge directly with questions, bypassing the standard technical support lines and forums.

Prior to the creation of islands, every simulator belonged to a large land mass. Regions of these simulators sometimes ended up dedicated to specific groups, including the furry fandom.

There are currently a number of furry-owned or themed islands and regions in Second Life:

;Luskwood

* Luskwood consists of two sims/regions, Lusk and Perry, with some elements spilling into Clara; PG-rated, though not heavy on rules, Luskwood (started in mid-2003) is the oldest Furry-themed area in SL. Though not an island in practice (it resides on the SL mainland) these regions are wholly owned by the Luskwood group, and can be considered its own furry-themed area. It is home to Luskwood Creatures the first Furry avatar makers on SL. Luskwood builds many varieties of furry avatars, and is considered a sister-sim to, and administered by some of the same folks who run Taco.
:Luskwood
; Taco
* Currently owned and run by Arito Cotton of Luskwood fame.
* This sim currently has a Mature rating label, though it is asked that you keep the blatantly mature items far, far away from ground level.
* This sim has a slightly cartoony feel to it, and is the home of Dwellget, a department store that heavily parodies the USA based retail store chain, Target.

; Worlds

* FurNation Worlds is a group of seven simulators (Prime, Alpha, Vista, Aqua, Reia, Omega, and Kitsune) run by the crew at FurNation.
* Each of their simulators seems to serve a particular purpose.
** Alpha appears to be the residential area;
** Vista and Omega appear to be sandbox areas;
** Prime is the welcome area and hub for everything in the area.
**There was a seventh (private) sim attached to the south of FNW, Asteria Prime, which is not related in any way to it.
*On April 5, 2006, Asteria Prime moved to the Fox Valley's sim conglomerate, followed by former FN sim Tria on April 7, becoming "Masquerade Valley" on the process.
*On May, 2006, Kitsune (formerly Kitsune valley, from the Fox Valley's sim conglomerate) moved in, along with Aqua, which took Trias spot.
:FurNation Worlds

; The Forest

* The Forest was the first Furry oriented island in Second Life.
* This sim had an abundance of trees, but towards the end of Spade Richlieu's management, trees were a bit too bare in many spots to really own up to its name.
* This sim suffered from severe lag issues in the beginning, as it was a prime hangout to many furs, which led to the island being full at peak times. This distinction was taken later on by the FurNation Worlds.
* Sibe was banned from this simulator for reasons unknown; this made big news within the furry circles of Second Life, and it wasn't long before many wanted to know why. This ban has long since been repealed, probably during Anshe's acquisition.
* In its first months, The Forest it earned at least one dwell award (money previously given to people who rake in the most dwell - or butt hours - each month by Linden Research). The entire island earned one of the awards for January 2005, which offset the first month's island fee by about half in this case.
* The Forest eventually came under Anshe Chung's ownership. She soon added Tiger Creek to the south of The Forest as a residential area for furs to purchase or rent land. In March 2006 a second residential island was added, Bunny Bay. Revenues from Tiger Creek and Bunny Bay go towards paying for The Forest's tier.
* The Forest, Tiger Creek and Bunny Bay are part of what many call AnsheLand (mostly out of dislike for its owner - its proper name is actually Dreamland), a chunk of 55 linked islands located west-north-west of the North Continent of the main Grid.
* As of late May 2006, The Forest has suffered a crisis of administration. Disagreements between Anshe and the Forest Guides led to the replacement of the latter with a set of Dreamland administrators. Meanwhile, the Guides removed all their content, including the vast majority of the trees.
* At the start of June 2006, the Guides moved to a new sim in the north of the Fox Valley region, Serenity Woods.
:The Forest

; Fox Valley
* Sometimes know as The Valleys, this sim is furry residential world run by Costello as an alternative to The Forest and Tiger Creek.
* The single island is located in the island cloud, southwest of Anshe Chung's Dreamland, northwest of Furnation Worlds.
* Fox Valley was founded in November 2005, making it the youngest of the furry islands. Since then it has grown, with additional islands named Wolf Valley and Tiger Valley (run by Kithylin Perth), FlyinTails Airfield (run by Effsey Nelson), Rabbit Valley (run by the Kenzo Clan,) Dragon Valley, Masquerade Valley (formerly Furnation Tria) Ryu Valley and Isteria Prime. Two former sims moved out in May 2006, Kitsune Valley and Fae Valley (run by Alynna Vixen), with Serenity Woods moving in at the start of June 2006, and Critter Valley at the end of the same month.
; Abbotts Aerodrome

* Abbotts Aerodrome bills itself as "the most famous airport in Second Life". Occasionally referred to as Abbotts Furrodrome, Abbotts is among the most fur-friendly airports in Second Life. The Aerodrome features free demo flights, a skydiving center, A.I. flights, and shops owned by some of the leading aircraft designers in Second Life. Founded by Apotheus Silverman and Cubey Terra in 2004, Abbotts Aerodrome is a center for aircraft development and skydiving.

;Gay Yiffy Club
* Gay Yiffy Club promotes itself as the most popular gay furry place on Second Life. Originally build by Senjin Soothsayer and managed by Kiroja Fluffy and Darkfoxx Bunyip. It's not even an island SIM, yet it's traffic surpasses most islands. The club is commonly referred to by its abreviation GYC and thanks it's popularity mostly to the very active staff containing dancers, DJs and Bartenders. The club features dancefloor, bar, darkroom, stage, pool and loungearea.

; Rainbow Tiger
* Originally a dance club owned by Spike Nico and an adjoining mall owned by Shadow Garden in the Cleary region, Rainbow Tiger has expanded onto a full island. Rainbow Tiger currently has: Club Rainbow Tiger, a large dance club with live DJ's spinning tunes regularly as well as a large 3 story mall, swimming pool, events center, casino, and an exercise room. It is also the primary retail location for OrcaHorse, owned by Fore Odets. Rainbow Tiger has been awarded Developer's Incentive awards twice by Linden Lab since its creation. A second island named Rainbow Stallion was added at the end of March 2006, and is being developed as a residential area. Both sims are rated 'mature', and are open to all species.
:Rainbow Tiger

; Tartarus Island
* The new home of The Fur Dungeon, a club that once existed on the mainland. Underwater dungeon areas and an array of domes (including, presently, a mall and movie dome) complement the club itself. Created by Musuko Massiel.

; The Wild
; Cub Conclave

* An island for babyfurs. Features a castle, a mini mall, a marina, a bathhouse, a spaceship and Club Softpaws among other things. Founded and owned by Raven Welesa
:Cub Conclave

; Prometheus
* Mature-rated furry-themed island sim run by Sabvriel Padar. Mostly residential, with several houses nestled amid beautiful landscaping and apartments for rent up in the sky. Also hosts a small shop for vendors, and Club Synergy.

; Coonspiracy
* Southwest corner of Noonkkot sim, a hangout for raccoons, gators, swamp foxes, and the like.

; Meeting Island
* Mature-rated furry-themed island sim run by Pounce Teasle. Raccoon Hill (Former sim Fae Valley from the Fox Valley's sim conglomerate) was added in May, 2006. Meeting Island is best known for the furry escort establishment, The Seven Tails Brothel.

;Lost Furest

*After ownership of the original Forest was passed from Spade Richlieu to Anshe Chung, four furs decided to make a new home for themselves, thus the furry sim "Lost Furest" was born in 2005. It's now called home to many furs who seek a relaxing atmosphere.
*This island sim is "Mature" rated and correctly named Sables Dalliez >Lost Furest<.
*Visitors usually are thrown off by the sim's name, expecting trees and foilage yet finding an island full of sand. The name actually represets the act of being at rest or as we call it "Fur-Rest".
*Home to the Lost Creatures furry avatars, founded by two creators Cheetah Kitty and Daisuke Tokugawa.
*Awarded Developer's Incentive awards three times by Linden Lab and has recently become a heavy traffic area, earning the islands name in the top 20 most popular places often.
Collecting donations for Island upkeep fees is a popular activity on islands, furry or otherwise.
"Second Life Furry" logo
In (early 2006?), a "furry admin" meeting for all furry and/or furry-friendly sims' administrators or owners was held to discuss several unifying strategies regarding the fandom population in world (Inferniel Solvang was the lead fur for this particular enconter.) Of the many proposals, one was the creation of a common, official symbol or logo for identifying purposes for sim or fur.

The final design, a SL logo inspired image, came to be thanks to the design of SL furry artist, Yiffy Yaffle. The logo can be viewed on most of the older furry sims, with propagation to newer ones going at a slow, but steady rate.

Video
As of version 1.6.0, Second Life now hooks Quicktime, if it is installed on the user's system, to provide an interface that allows one to watch movies within the client itself. A very fast connection is suggested in this case, as you will be streaming world data and a video at the same time. If Quicktime is not installed, the user will be reminded that Quicktime is needed to watch video within the client when they enter a parcel with video.

A number of furs use the video feature to watch the Funday PawPet Show on their land.

Some users have taken advantage of this new feature to bring forward a new business: Movie Rentals. One may rent adult movies from a couple of the businesses in Second Life, for the express purpose of being able to watch pornography on their land for a couple of hours.

Preview Grid
As Linden Lab draws closer to a potential release, be it a sub-version upgrade, or a full point-release jump, they release preview versions of the client, to allow all interested parties to test the new client and its features. This is extremely important to builders, scripters, and texturers, as knowing how the new software will handle their works is very important.

The Preview client is run on a separate grid from the current client, which means there are less people to interact with. Most of the people available test their wares, making sure they won't have to do a full rebuild or rescript for the next version, as well as reporting bugs.

Technical advice
Due to the amount of data that is sent between the client (you) and the servers, Second Life requires broadband internet of 1Mbps or better, at least 512MB of computer RAM, and a CPU faster than 800MHz, though the bare minimum will not be as pleasant an experience. Linden Lab suggests that you invest in hardware that will exceed the minimum specs. There are also specific graphics card requirements due to the game making use of a certain OpenGL standard. The system requirements for interested people is listed at the Second Life website partially, and more exact requirements can be found inside its technical support area.

Although it is not impossible to use a dial-up connection with Second Life, nearly every option of the game requires serious cutting back; close to the bare minimum. This makes the experience flatter and less pleasant, with lag so heavy that movement is difficult and awkward with occasional stop-frame style "clipping" animation. Walking forward one step, for example, might occasionally result in sliding forward more then a yard or two before being snapped back to your intended position in a rather sudden jerk, or scenery change. Sometimes, said movement could make you sink through the ground or pass through other objects (like a wall) before the snap-back occurs. Then you find you need another of the regular 17-20MB to 20MB updates to play. There aren't many dialup users on Second Life.

Second Life has been dealing with issues over ATi's video card drivers for quite a while. It has become practice on the forums to suggest to ATi users to pick up the Omega Drivers, a set of user-modified drivers recognized by ATi (according to their author) as "the best-modded drivers in the Internet". These Omega Drivers enable features that Second Life can use which aren't easily enabled in the default drivers.

Fansites
Linden Lab's policies reguarding the use of trademarks on Second Life fansites are loose, provided the following stipulations are met.

* There is no attempt to pass off a fan site as Second Life or Linden Lab itself

* The following legal text is present on all Second Life related pages: "Second Life® and Linden Lab® are registered trademarks of Linden Research, Inc. No infringement is intended." this must include the ® circles though can be any size the website creators see fit.
Hi, GreenReaper
This is partly a test to see if I've got this editor figured out before I do anything important with it. I notice someone put in an entry for yours truly (in fact that's how I wandered in - I was checking old Other Suns links which led to Nicolai's entry which led to mine) which I may update later; at least I suppose the fact that I was Den Mother of ConFurence for years and am now holding that position in CaliFur is at interesting as anything already there. Also an excuse for putting in a few Ursa Major links inasmuch as I maintain the Recommended List.

Speaking of which, I got your note suggesting the addition of WikiFur to the Recommended Anthropomorphics list for this year - makes sense, though I'll have to discuss where to put it with the rest of the committee. We're currently counting nominations for this year's Ursa Major ballot.
--Yealurowluro 00:58, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

:Glad you got my note! I wasn't entirely sure if I should suggest it myself, but I figured it's something that's worth reading. :-)

Moving assistance.
Hey GreenReaper,

Thanks for the help moving the page for my listing. I was woundering if it should have been moved over as you did, but didn't have time IRL to send a message. The dire warning kinda steared me off. (I figured I would mess around with my own page before messing up some one elses =)

:No problem! A lot of people start off in the User: namespace, as that's where you would normally do it on (e.g.) Wikipedia.

Let me know if I'm misplacing anyother articles so we can keep the database as consistant as possable! (Or if you have any other suggestions)

:I'm sure I or another contributor will let you know should that be the case. :-)

I hope the format of the post is accaptable. I wrote the thing in third person as if I was writing about someone else. Thanks again - PG

:That was fine. Feel free to edit your User: page if you want to say something from first-person persepective in addition to that which is already there (but don't feel you have to - most people are just fine with what's on the page about them already). --GreenReaper 03:02, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
View counts
I've noticed that the view counts in :Special:Popularpages have not updated at least since last Thursday on several articles I've been following, even though I've viewed some of those articles myself during that time. I've verified this from two different computers and used a couple of other tricks to make reasonably certain it's not a browser cache issue. What gives?

Edit: There are also several hundred articles that currently show 0 views.
--mwalimu 14:23, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

:Yes. I had a chat with the admins and apparently they had to discontinue popular pages updating due to server loads. We can get the same sort of information from the google analytics stats, so it's no great loss, although it is a pity that people can't access that without talking to me first.

:As this makes the page rather useless, I've removed the link in the main page header and added in links to the article and user talk pages instead. --GreenReaper 16:29, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
Re my WikiFur entry
Just noticed that you had stuck in an unwritten link from the Kay Shapero entry for the Anthropomorphic Literature and Arts Association. I had deliberately NOT put a link there, because the ALAA exists to produce the Recommended List and present the Ursa Major awards, both of which have links right after the reference. So I figured it would be superfluous. What do you think? I could probably write an entry, but it'd only be a couple of lines long and probably wouldn't contain much you can't find out from the other two links. --Yealurowluro

:(I'm not GR, but we never have a shortage of opinions around here! :-) Actually, even the small amount of information you mention would be useful, if only to define the parametes of the organization and to show that it is independent of any other organization out there (when I first saw mention of ALAA, I erroneously conflated it with AAE, which is a different beastie entirely). ----DuncanDaHusky(talk) 00:28, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

:That's basically why I put it in there (also because I rememebered it was linked in Ursa Major Awards). If you really don't think it should have an entry, take it out, but as Duncan mentions, Anthropomorphic Arts and Education seems to do well enough. It's a short page, but it gives a link to the organization, and as it is a separate page it can be put into :Category:Organizations which helps us keep a tab on all such organizations. --GreenReaper(talk) 03:19, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

To Stub or Not to Stub?
Is there a guideline as to when a short article (which just doesn't have much to say) doesn't need to be tagged as a stub? 1000 bytes, etc.? Wouldn't stop anyone from dropping in to make changes anyway. Just curious. --Frizzy 23:11, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

:I usually go by the rule of whether I feel there's anything that ought to be added (but that I'm not sure about or don't know or don't feel like putting in right now). -- Siege(talk) 05:02, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

:The general rule is "if there is probably something that could be added fairly easily by someone who doesn't know much about the topic" (say with a few minutes of google searching) then it is a stub. If not, then it is not a stub, although if you can describe it entirely in a couple of lines, it is probably a strong candidate for merging with another article. --GreenReaper(talk) 08:04, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Categorization?
Thanks for the quick feedback! I was looking through WikiFur's style guide and had another question: Are there any guidelines on category order at the end of articles? I was going through alphabetically, but it might be helpful to define this in the style guide if there's a prefered order to doing this. --Frizzy 19:10, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

:Technically any order is fine. In practice, for articles about people I've tended to do People and then subcategories of People (note that we only do this category + subcategory thing with people so as to get a full listing in that category), and then their location and year of birth/death. In general I would put the most important or relevant category first, but that's just a personal style. --GreenReaper(talk) 20:44, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
Requesting page protection
How do I go about requesting my page to be locked so that only myself and administrators can edit it? --Banrai

:You just did. I'm at work right now so I can't really look that closely to ensure it's appropriate, but I will later this evening.

:Be aware that "your page" is User:Banrai. Banrai is "the page about you". As such it is expected to be reasonably complete, and I do find it odd that there is no mention or reference to the actions mentioned in a certain LiveJournal entry that comes up when searching for your name. What's past is past, and it is important not to dwell on it, but it does deserve recording so that people understand how things ended up as they are today (and so we don't get complaints on the talk page from people who think things are being hidden). I will try and see about that tonight as well. I'm not a concerned party other than ensuring the accuracy of the article, and I don't particularly want to raise any drama about it, so fear not - it'll be brief.

:Oh, and just something I noticed glancing over the page - you only need to link to other articles the first time a linkable name comes up, not every time. It's assumed that people will already have clicked on the link if they want to go to it. :-) --GreenReaper(talk) 15:04, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

::I added a small blurb about... that. But feel free to edit it as you see fit. It's a very personal preferance that the article itself not actually be linked, since it IS over and done, but.. yeah, you're the mod. I also went back in and fixed the massive-linking, so it looks a little cleaner now. ;3 --Banrai

:::I've not linked it. Instead, I spent a while reading various sources, then tried to give a summary of your actions, the context behind them - part of which was already evident in previous sections - and the response from others, without turning it into a duplicate of that post (or another Sibe). I think it says all that needs to be said about that without taking up too much of the article. If people really want to know more, I'm sure they can find out for themselves - but I suspect for most it is enough that they will not feel the need to do so.

:::As for your request, the article seems a good one as it stands. I will post a notice on the talk page, and unless there is significant dissent from the WikiFur community I will enable the page protection within a day or so. If at a later point you decide that you no longer want the page protected then any admin can help you remove it at request. --GreenReaper(talk) 06:35, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
Do we have an understood point where we block for longer periods, or infinitely? -- Sine 03:20, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

:I would say go up by one category per repeated offense - hours, days, weeks, months, years (or forever). If all they do is vandalism feel free to skip a step. We're not Wikipedia, we've not really got time to deal with trouble again and again. --GreenReaper(talk) 03:32, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
Edit patrols
It's about this time that I think bringing back the "patrol this edit" marker may be a good idea. It just has to be explained clearly: "These markers are for admin to make rounds of patrols through the various edits," and so forth. I'd also like to suggest a proxy banlist which is shared across Wikia. That way, once a proxy is confirmed, all wikis have the option of automatically banning it. -- Siege(talk) 06:24, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
:I would support the creation of a shared proxy banlist with all of Wikia. Is there a feature for this currently in mediawiki or would it have to be added through some sort of module? -- DeVandalizer 06:33, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

:This might be a good idea. We are getting a lot of edits - certainly more than I manage to have the time to look at, let alone edit. We can probably try enabling it for a time.

:I think there is actually a proxy blacklist. We may be using a service, in which case it probably doesn't get everything. JasonR on the live chat would be the perosn to talk to about that (or he's available via technical at wikia dot com, or the wikia-l mailing list, or the wikia LiveJournal). --GreenReaper(talk) 08:12, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
Database error on page move
I was attempting to move Art Show over its redirect Art show (note the caps - one is the name of a show, the other is a type), and I received this error:

:A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:
::<tt>UPDATE `wikicities`.`gpage` SET page_namespace = '0',page_title = 'Art_show' WHERE page_namespace = '0' AND page_title = 'Art_Show'</tt>
:from within function "<tt>Database::update</tt>". MySQL returned error "<tt>1062: Duplicate entry 'furry-0-Art_show' for key 2 (paris.wikia.com)</tt>".

Would you mind passing this on to the Wikia folks? Looks like the parser is missing the routine which checks for a page/redirect/whatever under the name being moved to. Thanks. -- Siege(talk) 10:13, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
I think I'll just leave the Kevin Duane item as it is. While there's a hundred times more, it isn't really that important,and what's there is probably impartial enough. Though I doubt very much Kevin would own up to much on the negative side of the ledger.
Here is a summary:
*August 1990: FurryMUCK is founded at North Carolina State University (or more specifically, at the Furry Home at Squirrel Hill) as a successor to Islandia when the previous idea (DisneyMUCK) fails to work out, with original wizards Drew, his housemates Ashtoreth, Shaterri, Centaur, and Erych, Abigail, Ryuuko and Bluemage - Revar, lynx and Tugrik arrive shortly after the launch
*Spring 1991: FurryMUCK outgrows the resources and moves to the University of California at Irvine. Siegfried became a wizard, as did Lionman, Carelia, and Tugrik; Erych left soon after. Archteryx was made a wizard for a few days by Drew without approval and was dewizzed shortly after.
*April 1991: The original taxi, the Cafe Rose, and Lynx's truffel program are installed; 10,000 objects reached
*October 1991: 20,000 objects reached
*November 1991: FurryMUCK is forced to move to Carnegie-Mellon University (Shaterri's workplace) by the actions of a user called Bruce
*1992: Helpstaff formed; lynx, Revar, Mishael, Kimi and Riss are made wizards, while Ashtoreth, Carelia, Lionman, and Siegfried resign - Revar resigns later in the year
*August 1992: 50,000 objects reached
*September 1992: FurryMUCK is deleted, but mostly restored from Revar's backups; relaunched at the University of Toronto with Chris Siebemann administering
*New Year's Day 1993: The Quicksilver virus written by Targhan infects the MUCK, diverting all conversation to Yozduk, who posts the log on rec.games.mud.tiny
*Spring 1993: The Demons vs Angels role-play takes place
*March 1994: Wired publishes Johnny Manhattan Meets the Furry Muckers, and FurryMUCK gets a deluge of sex-seekers
*July 1994: 100,000 objects reached
*Mid-1994: Triggur is elected as Mayor of FurryMUCK
*1995: Data corruption on the move to a new server causes FurryMUCK to finally implement proper backup procedures; Kimi retires from the wizcorp, Nightwind replaced her, and K'has, O'Nara and Slipstream joined too, while AJWolf "acquires" the mayoralty
*July 1995: 125,000 objects reached
*Late 1995: Lumpy the Squirrel, the primary source of urine in the FurryMUCK park pond, is finally toaded once and for all; the pool is thoroughly cleaned afterwards
*August 1998: Inari is elected as Mayor
*October 2000: @shout is removed over age concerns and abuse. A private version called "Scream", written by Sarusa, fills the void left by @shout. Being outside of wizard control, it is not censored and becomes a community of its own.
*March 2001: Dwight Dutton started an eBay auction on the domain names furrymuck.com/net/org. The wizards were not pleased (see this post to a.f.f. by Shaterri), and shut the auction down, but not before it reached $500. Darrel Exline, the high bidder, bought the names for $550, and later let the domain registrations lapse. Triggur bought them and donated them back to FurryMUCK. The domains are now managed by lynx. One result was an increased highlighting of the use of the term "FurryMUCK" as a service mark.

Places
In general, all public areas of FurryMUCK are officially PG-13, although conversation has a habit of straying into more mature topics. Private areas, and areas specified for the purpose, may have a higher rating.

West Corner of the Park
The West Corner of The Park (t park) is the center of the FurryMUCK universe. New players appear from under the Bandstand in this corner of the park. It is also the location of the Bulletin Board. As a result, it is usually the most populated place on FurryMUCK. The WCotP is ironically the most reviled location on the MUCK. Years ago a center of conversation about the fandom, arts, games, and technology, the park is currently heavy on spam and RL-whinging. The regulars occasionally partake in impromptu roleplaying. Rules are sporadically enforced through vague interpretations, resulting in a fair number of 'parkbanned' players.

:West Corner Of the Park is also a comic based around this location, and FurryMUCK in general.

The Purple Nurple
The Purple Nurple (t tpn) is FurryMUCK's gay/lesbian/bisexual nightclub and meeting place, although straight people are welcome as well. Created by Slinky and Cargo, and operated by Cargo and later Rigel for several years. After an extended series of controversies and headaches in 1999-2000, it was owned and operated by Bohor until January 2006. It is currently owned by Rigel again.

Upstairs from the nightclub are the Nurple Apartments, a popular form of accommodation for those who can stand the heavy dance music that thumps up from below. Beneath the nightclub are the cellars, the topic of several rumors - these are owned by Cargo but are now basically unmaintained.

The Vanilla Club
The Vanilla Club (tport vanilla), run by D'anna, is an establishment for furries who wish to escape some of the more extreme fetishes that are sweeping other areas of the MUCK. Furries must be either male or female to enter; hermaphrodites and other genders are not permitted. This has caused some controversy, but the club has become quite popular despite that, with a regular nightly crowd sometimes exceeding even West Corner of the Park.

The main room has a series of plaques about roleplaying, powergaming, and other interesting topics. There are also themed back rooms for sexual play, including a exhibition room and voyeur room for exhibitionists and those who like to watch them.

Hermaphrodite Haven
The Hermaphrodite Haven (t hh) is an establishment for hermaphrodite enthusiasts and fetishists, party to both hermaphrodite or shemale characters and those who enjoy roleplay with them. The grounds are age-locked against minors for sexually explicit behavior. Founded by Tulip, it is now operated by Shadow. Most activity actually takes place in the clubhouse grounds, although there is a truth or dare room inside. Nearby is Lake Hermy, and adjacent to the Haven are the Hermaphrodite Estates, a set of strictly herm-only residences. The structure has been 'under construction' for the better part of a decade, functionally frozen.

Libertyville Nude Beach
Libertyville Nude Beach (t lnb) is another age-locked social hangout. Characters must be equipped with a nude description before entering.

Willing Victims Guild
The Willing Victims Guild (t wvg), age-locked, is designed to bring dominant and submissive characters together to arrange roleplay. Safeword rules and BDSM conventions apply.

The Emerald City Tavern
An adult rated area for casual discussion and socialization. Similar to the West Corner of the Park, but with no conversational age limit. Maintained by Sorien and Cuprohastes.

Garden of Eden
The Garden of Eden (t goe) is yet another adult area for both casual conversation and adult roleplay. The Garden's theme stems around the concept of representing varying bioclimatic zones within a greenhouse, offering many rooms for players to enjoy for various purposes. Players are required to read the rules and set a usage acceptance flag before entering, and the entire area is age-locked to prevent minors from entering. Maintained by Jurann.

Regular events
* The Owlhaven Literary Lounge has weekly story readings every Tuesday night at 7pm CST (GMT-6)
* Artist's Ambush occurs every Monday in the Studio de l'Artiste at 10:30pm EST (GMT-5) (For January and February 2006, ambushes will be held on Wednesdays instead of Mondays)

Programming
FurryMUCK offers two types of programming:
*MPI, a Lisp inspired text-replacement language used by most regular players for simple scripts
*MUF, typically used for more complex operations and to implement system actions - apprentice access typically granted on request

Organization
FurryMUCK is run by its wizards, those responsible for keeping it up and running smoothly.

Current wizards
*Aragh - Player Relations / Character Creation
*Chip_Unicorn - Player Relations
*Drew - @age registration / Player Relations
*Frang - Player Relations
*K'has - Player Relations
*Lisa_Lynx - Player Relations
*Lynx - Server Problems and Restarts
*Mishael - Assistant @age registration and character creation
*Nightwind - MUF/MPI / Helpstaff / Idle Purges / @age assistant
*Shaterri - Player Relations
*Tugrik - Site Administration / Builder Wizard / Quota

Revar is not a wizard, but is responsible for many of FurryMUCK's scripts and helps Tugrik with administration.

Previous wizards
Players who are no longer wizards for one reason or another include:

*Centaur - Recycling
*Erych (1990-1991)
*Archteryx (1991)
*Lionman (1991-1992)
*Revar (1992)
*S'A'Alis: Character Creation / Site Administration (Oct 1993 - stepped down Jul 2001)
Note: This list is probably incomplete.

Mayors of FurryMUCK
FurryMUCK has historically also had a Mayor, typically elected, although the mayoralty has been known to pass hands for as much as $1.37, and little as the wag of a tail. It was an official part of the process that new mayors were selected in a different way each time. The first mayor was selected by a relatively fair election, so all others thereafter were selected by varying other methods, all deliberately corrupt in some way. Bribery, nepotism, theocracy, and vote-buying were all used.

The joke is that despite the good–natured (and otherwise) hullabaloo over the selection process, the post is almost entirely symbolic. The only responsibility of the Mayor being to change the name of the currency. One day you may be strolling through the park and see "You found a reason to taunt a fox!" and the next you might see "You have 234 catnip mice." Toast explains:

:A good mayor changes the currency frequently, no less than every other day, RL permitting.

Past Mayors and how they lost their title include:

* Triggur (mid-1994 to February 1995) - position bought out in a shady deal with Tugrik
* AJWolf (February 1995 to January 1996) - sold for loose change at ConFurence 7
* Frang (January 1996 - October 1997?) - lost in a corrupt election where the votes could be bought
* Toast (October 1997 - August 1998) - delivered to a god by material sacrifice
* Inari (August 1998 - July 2000?) - lost in a contentious election
* Rose de Stitches - (July 2000 - August 2000?) - dethroned after protests, the wizards got annoyed and declared the Mayoralty suspended

While players have asked for the Mayorship contest to return, so far the wizards have not re-approved the event.

Characters
