Trolls typically bait their victims with inflammatory and derogatory remarks, to which users respond with criticisms of the troll's behavior. The goal of a troll is to detract users from their normal communications and get them to instead start arguments with them or other users. ==Second Life==
October 2004 [[User:wolfeedarkfang|wolfeedarkfang]] found [[Second Life]], where she created the account [[Yiffy Yaffle]]. She became a builder and scripter rather quickly. She created many things which can be found throughout the grid. She created a open source vendor system, which helps new residents sell their creations and learn from the codes. She's very active in the community and forums.

January 2005 she was given the tasks of Head Security Administrator and a Builder for the popular [[Second Life]] [[furry]]-themed Island Simulation [[The Forest]]. She was in charge of keeping peace, by making sure troublemakers don't harm the residents or visitors. She made a side task of managing a [[Furry Art Museum]] in the western side of the island, which contains artwork from various artists in the Furry Fandom. This artwork can rate from G to XXX but is tasteful.

In May of 2006 she moved along with the other administrators of The Forest to manage a new sim named [[Serenity Woods]] located in the [[Fur Valleys]]. They had fund raisers to help them purchase the sim, then Ron Overdrive made the final purchase. The sim was held under his ownership but managed as a group effort.

In June of 2007 Ron announced he would have to sell the sim. It was purchased by [[Mako Minogue]] and [[Kerwin Newall]], owners of several sims in Fur Valleys. Eventually they had difficulties, which resulted in the sim being purchased yet again by one of it's administrators [[Curt Pascal]].

It changes color slightly when viewed from different angles, ranging from darker hues of blue-gray, to a lighter bluish color. The blue fur is accented with softer light gray fur over his [[muzzle]], chest and belly. (His chest being particularly furry) This lighter variation extends further down between his inner thighs and under his tail. He has big gleaming hazel eyes that seem to look right into a person’s soul, but in a pleasant way.

Wolfers has an artistic nick in his left paw, and likes to exploit it. He isn’t very efficient with digital media and prefers to stick with pencils and paper. Furcadia is free to all users. To join Furcadia, the [http://www.furcadia.com/download/ Windows client] can be downloaded and installed. This client connects to the Furcadia server, allows for character creation, and provides a graphical environment where a [[furre]] (Furcadia character) can explore [[Dream (Furcadia)|dreams]] (player-made areas) and interact with others.

Joining Furcadia involves creating a character by selecting a name, entering a contact e-mail address to activate an account, selecting a [[species]], choosing colors, and writing a personal description that is visible to other furres.

The following species can be selected during the character creation process: [[Rodent]], [[Equine]], [[Feline]], [[Canine]], [[Musteline]], [[Lapine]], [[Squirrel (species)|Squirrel]], [[Bovine]] (also known as [[Minotaur]]s), and [[Ursine]]. It is also common to use one of these base species to create another; for example, choosing the coloring on a squirrel to make it look like a [[skunk]].

In addition to the basic species, furres can purchase various add-ons for their character using real-world money. These add-ons are known as "Digos". Some players have criticized Furcadia for not providing an interesting gaming environment.{{fact}} Some players who are used to [[Wikipedia:MMORPG|MMORPG]]-style games find the online roleplay and chatroom-style interaction to be repetitive and boring after extended play, lacking the elements found in other MMORPGs such as killing, leveling up, and other common game play features of the MMORPG genre. Other players find that the social interactions, role playing and the creative aspects of Furcadia provide an engaging and positive environment when compared to games that focus on war, killing, acquisition of wealth and property and level grinding that typifies many MMORPGs.

The Furcadia Guardians enforce community standards for behaviour in the main maps, and depending on the severity by which a given player is violating the rules or disrupting the game, they may be banned temporarily or permanently from the game. Many players who have been banned claim that the bans are a result of them being personally targeted. However, since the Guardians will not discuss the reasons behind a ban for confidentiality reasons, the official cause of many bans can not be determined by the public or by the player who was banned.

Some players have complained about the "Banish" commands which are available to dream owners.{{fact}} They claim that these commands allow the dream owners to deny players access to dreams for arbitrary reasons, and are used to discriminate against certain players. Given that the Furcadia rules state that dreams are solely owned by the dream owner, they are free to use the Banish/eject commands on whomever they choose for whatever reason, if any, they choose.

Disputes between players have arisen when one dream owner loads their dream in a location where another, usually more well-known dream, has been loaded in the past. When a dream is for a chartered guild, a spot on a map is reserved for them. In this case, if another dream is loaded in their officially designated spot, the Guardians will remove the other dream to allow the guild to upload their dream.

A common complaint revolves around the [[Lost Lake]] dream, a dream in Allegria Island that is always uploaded in the same spot as an official tribute and shrine to the deceased owner [[Alexsi]].{{fact}} People who upload their dreams or sit in Lost Lake's "spot" may receive anything as minimal as being ejected from AI to something as extreme as being temporarily suspended from the game as a whole.{{fact}} This has led protestors to rhetorically question whether or not their dream would get special attention if they were to commit suicide.{{fact}}

'''''A Fox in the Works''''' is a long-running online furry story written by [[Fox Cutter]] that first appeared online on December 25th, 1995. The series is a [[sci-fi]] and [[fantasy]] mixture following the life and adventures of Fox Cutter, his wife Oriana, and their friends through a sprawling multi-verse. The stories range from high fantasy, political intrigue, science fiction, mystery, romance and drama, all to varying degrees.

The series will end in March of 2008.

== Background ==

''A Fox in the Works'' was started, almost by accident, in the very early hours of Christmas 1995. The first story was a short writing exercise called '''It Begins Anew'''. Fox wrote it simply because he had not written anything in almost two months, and he wanted to get a story idea out on paper. He used himself as the main character simply because he was too tired to come up with a different name.

It would have ended there if it was not for [[Brian W. Antoine|Brian Antoine]], who read the story and encouraged Fox to continue it. At the time Fox highly admired Brian, and had twice before attempted to start his own story series ala ''[[The Family nas Kan]]'', both attempts failed. So when Brian asked for more, Fox was at least willing to provide it.

Forgoing plotting out more then the current story for the time being, Fox started to write the series, quickly establishing the core framework.

As the series progressed through the first year an overall plan started to form as Fox became more comfortable with the story telling. By the time of '''...And into the Fire''' Fox has most of the next year of stories planed out, and taking a cue from ''[[Wikipedia:Babylon 5|Babylon 5]]'' he started weaving the story arcs throughout the text.

The series also provided a place for Fox to hone his writing skills. The early stories are the work of an amateur, with a plot, and some characterization, but lacking in description and refinement. As the series progressed the story telling improved.

While it is best to read the series from the beginning, the story [http://www.chaos-keep.com/AFiW/YearThree.html#Runaroun Run Around] is intended to be a mid-series starting point.

The series is edited in part by [[Hikaru Katayamma]].

The capital world of the Council, and where Fox and his family lives. Prid is the central location of the series. The planet is located in a binary star system two hundred light years from the edge of the galaxy. It was terraformed specifically for the Council, and outside of a few large cities, is sparsely populated.

====Earth====
Fox's home planet. At least six Earths are known to exist in the multi-verse. It's a small blue green planet in the out spiral arm of a barred spiral galaxy.

====City of Corbin====
The capital city of Prid, and was the capital of the Council. This is the largest city on Prid. Fox lives in one of the more expensive areas near the edge of town.

====The Marble Hall====
The sprawling office park and residential complex where the Council was located. It's buried under a ten mile-wide park in the center of Corbin.

====The "Old" House====
Where Fox and Oriana lived for many years. It's located in the wilderness of Prid and is connected to the Marble Hall by a teleport curtain. The house sits on the edge of a large lake, surrounded by forest. As the family started to grow, they moved to Corbin. Fox still owns the house and they sometimes spend time there.

====The "New" House====
Fox's current home in Corbin; a large, somewhat sprawling house in the more expensive part of town. Most of it isn't used, but Fox enjoys the having the extra space. It also allows him to offer a place for his friends to stay.

== Series synopses ==

The series is broken up into five years, akin to seasons of a television series. It is primary made up of short stories, with the occasional novella and one or two novels every year. Each year is built around a large story arc first started in the previous year, and may continue onto the next. Many subplots wind through the series.

=== Prehistory ===

Fox first entered the multi-verse when he was just 15 years old, discovering his abilities as a Natural (and the fold in his bedroom) mostly by accident. In the early days he started exploring the different universes, meeting new friends in his travels.

It wasn't too long until Fox found himself in trouble, cut off from support and on an unknown world, the only way he was going to get home was to play at being a hero. After his survival he decided to start playing at being [[Wikipedia:Doctor Who|The Doctor]], jumping to places at random, trying to fix what he saw was wrong, and generally poking his nose into other peoples business.

Soon, Fox started to pick up some friends who traveled along with him. Most of them were young and a little bit foolish, but many of the friendships he made then lasted for years. But he also made enemies. Two of them were tenacious enough to continue to threaten him as the years went by. He has had multiple encounters with each, usually coming out ahead each time.

Fox carries many scars for his different fights, and for many years wore a high-quality prosthetic in place of his left hand. Events would eventually conspire to replace the lost limb, but not for many years.

After a year and a half of adventuring, Fox told his secret to Becky, one of his best friends on Earth. He took her into the multi-verse and they worked together for until they were both exiled. During this time Becky gained a secret of her own.

Near the end of 1994, Fox and Becky ended up a planet called Catarn. This was where things went wrong: Fox and Becky got separated during a war and nearly ended up on different sides. They made the powers that were ruling the world very worried. This ended with the surface of the planet being destroyed as Fox and Becky ran. The pair were tried for the destruction of the world; though they were found not guilty, they were exiled back to Earth and forbidden to return to the multi-verse.

In the year that followed, Fox was worried and depressed. Worse yet, halfway through the year Becky had to move to England. A few months later she was killed. It was only after this happened that Fox realized just how much he loved her.

=== Year One: The Song of Change ===

The year starts with Fox in exile on Earth, but soon he finds himself back in the multi-verse, being escorted by his old friend and former companion Oriana, an anthropomorphic [[lioness]].

Things quickly get interesting after a botched attempt on Fox's life, and a murder on a distant planet. These two events leads into the investigation of corruption in the Council (the local ruling body of the multi-verse). This leads to Fox and his friends becoming pivotal players in stopping a coup by the HammerHeads.

As the year comes to a close Fox discovers that the fold to Earth has started to destabilize, and he's forced to chose between staying on Earth or in the multi-verse. Soon his hand is forced, and he has to stay, loosing Earth for the moment.

In the closing days of the year Oriana confess her love for Fox, which had been growing over the year, but which he does not yet return. She leaves him with a gift before they both go off in different directions, each one trying to understand the changes in their lives.

=== Year Two: Standing on the Edge of Forever ===

While trying to get away from it all, Fox is transformed from a normal human into an anthropomorphic version of his namesake for a couple months. At the same time he meets Sora when she literally falls from the sky, and who helps him off the planet. But Sora has her own problems.

At the same time Oriana is trying to find her own place in the multi-verse and decides to look up an old friend. This starts a chain reaction that leads to her killing a man and being forced into the Assassins Guild.

After this Oriana returns to Fox, who helps her though a cleansing at her Temple, which brings them closer together.

Other things have started to happen of interest, including a strange human named Burke who has started to pop into Fox's life, dropping hints and clues and the future. Fox goes on a side trip to help an old friend stop a war. Meanwhile, a new virus has wiped out two worlds in the multi-verse.

Soon after, a third, unconnected world dies from the plague, and Fox is part of the group who is sent to investigate a distress call. This results in Fox adopting a young skunk girl named Naomi as his daughter.

Fox, Oriana and his friends escape from a trap set by Grasion, his oldest foe. This leaves Fox critically injured and both he and Oriana are left unconscious as the year came to a close.

=== Year Three: The End of the Innocence ===

Fox and Oriana awake, only to discover that they have switched bodies. This lasts until they find a way to stop Grasion (which involves stealing a space shuttle), after which a magical user friend is able to change them back. However, this is only the start of the transformations for the year, as Fox starts to occasionally change into his anthropomorphic [[fox]] form, and starts seeing a [[unicorn]].

While a new Council head is sworn into office, Fox is sent to investigate the people who seem to be responsible for the plague. That was curtailed when an attack that was meant for Oriana struck Fox by accident, transforming him into a non-morphic lioness.

The lioness has her own mind and personality, and she is named Rhea. Over the following month Fox is slowly destroyed and Rhea takes over, until he is completely gone inside and the lioness flees into the forest.

This is a state that doesn't last long, as Rhea sufferers a serious accident. Fox's mind is restored, and with help from a woman named Romana, he is taken home. Once there, his friends help turn him back, but not without side effects. Fox now has eyes the color of ice, and sharp claws.

Fox adapts to his new abilities while going on another side trip, looking for an item that Graison had hidden. During this, things finally come full circle, and Fox realizes his love for Oriana.

Two things happen soon after to change the status quo: Oriana finds a way to leave the Assassins Guild and Naomi starts to age rapidly into a adult. Both become pregnant, with Oriana carrying Fox's child.

Things take a turn for the worse when Fox is sent to the world that created the plague, only to learn that the new Council Head has given him a bomb that will kill everyone on the world. Fox refuses to take this action, and it starts a chain reaction that brings about the end of the Council and the start of the Joint Consortium of the Multi-Verse.

As the year comes to an end Naomi has her child, but at a great cost, and Fox finds a way to become a anthropomorphic lioness again. The appearances of the unicorn are connected to a person that shouldn't exist, and the possible return of a friend Fox thought to be long dead.

=== Year Four: Mirror Cycle ===

The beginning of the year starts on a slightly sour note as the attempts by Fox and Oriana to wed is short-circuited by her culture. They try to fill in the needed blanks, but come up empty. Soon it's Rhea who comes up with the answers, permanently making her part of their relationship and allowing them to be wed.

At the same time, Fox is starting to learn of something disturbing about a man named Cain - who is his double. This double has a fairly nasty history of terrorism and violence, and has taken an interest in Fox.

In the early part of the year Oriana gives birth to twins, and soon after Fox and Oriana receive a message that confirms that his old friend isn't as dead as he first thought.

Soon, Fox gets a chance to meet his in-laws, which goes better then one can expect. Soon after he successfully provides a way for Rhea to have her own body, so they no longer have to share.

This is tempered when Cain makes a move on Fox, which is unsuccessful, but puts everyone on edge. Fox decides to take the fight to Cain, which works to a point, but he does eventually get away. Fox continues to follow after him, even when it leaves him without any backup.

Eventually Cain ends up dead, and Fox makes a new friend in Samantha St. Clair. Cain's death nonetheless brings about implications about a new enemy who has the patience to wait a lifetime.

As things start to become normal again, Fox sheds some of the extra responsibility he had gained over the last few years. At the same time he is looking for a way to get Samantha back to her home, which leads him back to his double at Metamor Keep.

Things start to get worse as the next month wears on, and Fox becomes seriously ill. This leads to the discovery that he has become a shape-shifter, but one with very few forms. Because of not understanding his power he had made himself sick, but he learns to control it.

Meanwhile, Oriana has an encounter with a golem that has been following her for a few months. Soon she learns that the spell that made it belonged to the HammerHeads, and realize that they might still threaten her family. To learn to protect them she turns to the only experience she has, and rejoins the Assassins Guild, a move that Fox is not supportive of.

Thanks to the help of Oriana and Samantha, Fox learns more about the mysterious NeverEnding that has been watching him for the last few years, and who seems to be the one who sent the unicorn to follow him.

As the year winds down, Fox is preparing for a long mission to collect the last of the times that Graison had hidden in the multi-verse. Soon after, information about who has taken an interest in Oriana drops into their lap, pointing to a small group of people including the presumed dead second-in-command of the HammerHeads.

The quarterly magazine published its first issue in January 2007.

Head editor [[Fox Cutter]] began the magazine as an outlet for [[anthropomorphic]] stories, both of the type familiar to the [[furry fandom]] as well as other usages of anthropomorphic angles in genres beyond the furry subculture.

The magazine distinguishes itself by paying all contributors to the publication, both the authors and the artists. Authors are paid at one cent per word, and all art is purchased on commission.

The first issue was published in January of 2007, featuring both original fiction and art. The issue can be ordered from the magazine's web site. Subscriptions are also available. The second issue will be on sale in April of 2007.

Published as a trade paperback, with a full color cover and black and white illustrations inside, ''Renard's Menagerie'' strives for the highest quality it can. Printing is done though the print on demand service [[Wikipedia:Lulu.com|Lulu.com]], allowing back issues to be available even as new issues are published.

2 also performs and records audio 'rants', and hosted an Internet radio show called [[2 Sense]] which ran for 87 mostly-weekly episodes, up to two hours in length, before being discontinued due to time and work constraints on July 2nd, 2005, at the peak of its popularity. 2 ranted about many things during the early stages of his website. His rants were between 3-6 minutes long and normally focused on three areas. These areas are [[Wikipedia:religion|religions]] (rants about [[Wikipedia:holy wars|holy wars]], prayer, and [[Wikipedia:Christmas|Christmas]]), political issues (delving into such issues as [[Wikipedia:gay pride|gay pride]], hunting, guns, abortion, and the U. S. military), and the furry fandom itself. Rants on the latter are geared specifically to that community, and thus less accessible to those outside the fandom, and have dealt with [[Further Confusion]], [[Anthrocon]], [[furry artist|fur artists]] and "Muck Talk".

The rants were originally scripted and were released on average once every two months. Their main purpose was for 2 to spread his opinions.
His latest rants have dealt with [[Wikipedia:Intelligent design|intelligent design]], the [[Wikipedia:news media|news media]] and [[wikipedia:Justice|justice]]. Before the rants however, 2 created a lot of music. Some of the more popular songs include "Salvation" and "Jaunt". In the 1980s, 2 had originally hoped to become a rock artist, and still aspires to make music professionally.

It is thought that the files were named LSD Files because they give the same euphoric feel as the drug of the same name (though they have nothing to do with drugs). The files are in fact named Lucid Sonic Delusions; this may have been on purpose so that the initials would be LSD, but this has not been confirmed.

==Dear 2==
2 Gryphon is doing a short show (if it can indeed be considered a show) approximately 10 minutes long in which he answers letters sent in by (presumably) past 2 Sense listeners and fans of his website. The show is identical to the Dear 2 segment from 2 Sense with the exception of there being no co-host. This show has no actual release date and is released based on the amount of mail recieved and time restraints on 2 himself. Dear 2 is expected to end when 2 Sense 2.0 starts.

2 the Ranting Gryphon has released four DVDs and a CD since 2002. These are available to buy from 2's official website.

The first DVD, "Rolling A One", is a one hour long comedy show recorded live at Anthrocon in 2002.

The second DVD, "The Truth", is a one hour long comedy show recorded live at Anthrocon in 2003. It includes commentary from 2 and Lord Skandranon on one track, and a separate track consisting of 2, [[Lord Skandranon]], [[Skates]], and [[Krahnos]]. The DVD also includes the infamous "chocolate bunny death" video.

The third DVD, "The Gods Hate Me", is a one hour long comedy show recorded live at Anthrocon in 2004. Among the DVD's special features are a full length MST3K style commentary from 2, the DVD's creator Lord Skandranon and their friend [[Gir Tygrin]] (who in the video refers to himself as random other guy), some random bonus footage, and an explanation of the "beer shot" joke.

Plans for a fourth DVD, "Place Gryphon Here", were scrapped due to technical problems while recording the shows at [[Anthrocon 2005]] and [[Midwest FurFest 2005]]. Instead, an audio CD was released that contains audio from both. It replaces an earlier audio CD that has gone out of print.

A fourth DVD was eventually released, called "Live In Germany". This DVD is a one hour long comedy show recorded live at Eurofurence 12 in 2006.

==Second Life and furry==

The [[furry fandom]] has a major presence in Second Life, with multiple areas devoted to providing accommodation, entertainment and creative services specifically for members of the furry community. Themes range from the pedestrian to the bizarre, although trees are common in furry haunts. Each user can create their own objects from the inbuilt primitives, but the majority of users rely in part on objects created and sold by others. These include body parts for avatars, accessories, vehicles (which may be purely aesthetic or provide extra functionality), toys, [[pose ball]]s for avatar animation, and scripts to provide extra features (like "push" and "shield" defensive/offensive capabilities).

==Controversy==

On September 8th 2006, Linden Lab reported via a security bulletin (which was also emailed to all SL users) that the servers holding player account information had been attacked using a zero-day exploit. According to Linden Lab, this attack on the servers may have begun as early as September 3rd and they only noticed an increase in activity on the 6th which they then quickly locked out. Their investigation showed that the attack allowed a significant amount of customer account information to be downloaded such as credit card numbers, PayPal transaction ID's, real life names, Second Life names, account passwords, and contact information.

As part of their effort to improve the security of their servers, Linden Lab had invalidated the passwords (assuming they were already compromised) of all Second Life users and has required said users to reset their passwords. Linden Lab further mentioned that while the compromised payment information was encrypted, no encryption is unbreakable given enough time and computing power. They had thus stated that if any SL user believed themselves to be the victim of credit card fraud, they (the user) should contact their credit card company.

Second Life was started in 2003 as a project by "Linden Research, Inc." doing business as "Linden Lab".
Second Life's primary attraction has always been the level of customization; from the ground under your feet to the clouds in the sky. This was quite literal since the game's developers intended for the user to be able to create the world to their desire, as is quoted in the Second Life overview on its site:

The true answer to the question "is it such a game?" is "yes and no" - Second Life is technically not a [[role-playing|role-playing game]] by itself.
Also, unlike other role playing games, there is no goal to reach, no levels to gain, no enemies to defeat, therefore it isn't a game at all. It is more a MUSE: Multi User Simulated Environment.
Rather, it is a platform that allows games and worlds to be built within its framework. It is better classified as a richly graphical multiple user chat kingdom ([[MUCK]]) rather than an MMORPG. Some go so far as to just call it a [[Wikipedia:Metaverse|metaverse]], which isn't that far of a stretch. Membership requires a credit card or [[Wikipedia:Short message service|SMS]]-capable cellphone, both for security reasons and because each region has its own content rating, from PG to Mature (which can be very mature at times), though as of April 2007, both of these appeared to no longer be required.

Second Life has become one of the popular forms of online entertainment for members of the furry fandom; at last count there were over 500 furries registered as Second Life users, and the true number is probably several times that by now. This arose out of the fact that the avatars, humanoid objects representing the user, are very customizable and the game's disposition for allowing users to create anything has made the concept of a virtual "[[fursuit]]" possible. Many furries of Second Life don't like to be considered to be wearing fursuits. Instead, they pretend it is their real body. These consist of a variety body parts which are attached to the user's avatar. These parts include [[tail]]s, [[wing]]s, legs, and so on - some have even made complete sets that resemble mythical beasts such as [[dragon]]s, complete with scripted flame effects. Such avatar add-ons can be sold by their creators, who retain the ability to control distribution of their objects as part of their copyright, enforced by inbuilt copy restrictions. Some choose to give works away for free, for apparently [[Wikipedia:altruism|altruistic]] or promotional purposes.

As with most social environments on the Net, there is no way to tell inside the game how old someone really is. The game's Terms of Service state quite clearly you must be over the age of 18 to enter the "main grid" of Second Life. If anyone is found to be under 18 in the main grid, they will be banned from the game and all money and inventory will be forfeit. It is generally assumed that almost all players in the main grid are over the age of 18.

Second Life rates the individual sections of the game as Mature, or PG, with other possible ratings. These ratings help moderate the behavior of people that populate the various sections of the game, as they won't tolerate someone breaking the PG rating by performing a Mature-rated act in a PG-rated zone. Premium accounts come at a rate of US$9.95 each month, with discounts for paying quarterly or annually -- $22.50, and $72, respectively. The premium accounts come with the privilege of owning 512 square meters of land, known as 'First Land'. This is approximately 1/256 of 1 simulator, or "not much". They also come with a weekly stipend of L$300. The ability to acquire additional amounts of land bring an additional charge, called ''land tier''.

Many users own no land or accommodation at all - it is not required for object ownership, although object creation can be another matter.

Land, once purchased, may be traded between users at market rates. Large contiguous plots of land (or even relatively small plots of land in a busy place) can often sell at a hefty premium. Linden's tier remains the same whatever the selling price.

Each user who joins Second Life gets an unique referral link. Giving this link to people who have yet to sign up, and getting them to do so used to credit the user with a certain amount of Linden Dollars -- the in-world currency. Users can buy or sell their Linden Dollars (L$) from within the game using the Lindex money market run by Linden Research. There are also third-party exchange services.

Exchanges can be performed with any number of Linden Dollars. The Lindex calculator will give you an idea of what you'll be receiving as a result of your sale. The amount that you receive as a result of your sale gets placed into your account, where you may have it applied to anything you owe for your account if you are a premium user, or may have it sent to you via PayPal for a US$1 charge. For larger amounts, you may also have a check mailed to you for a fee - US$5 if you're inside the United States, or US$15 for locations outside of the United States.

There are some furs who extract do this with the earnings from their businesses (custom avatar creation, generic avatar vending, etc.), turning it into profit that allows them to do whatever they want to pay for, up to, and including starting their own islands. Historically-speaking, the L$ is a relatively volatile currency prone to bouts of inflation. It can therefore be a good idea to remove any significant sums from the game, unless they are to be spent quickly in-game.

[[island (Second Life)|Islands]] are user-owned simulators within Second Life. You can buy your own island but the price to play is pretty steep: $1675 for start up costs and a server (you don't own the server itself though and due to multiple CPU servers, you are effectively buying space on a single CPU for your island), as well as $295 a month maintenance fee. Islands, as opposed to the mainland, get a dedicated processor to run on. Mainland sims (regions) may have to share resources with up to 3 other neighboring regions. An additional benefit is that purchasing an island allows you to contact the Linden Concierge directly with questions, bypassing the standard technical support lines and forums.

Prior to the creation of islands, every simulator belonged to a large land mass. Regions of these simulators sometimes ended up dedicated to specific groups, including the furry fandom.

Furry plateau is teengrid's oldest furry hangout (3.75 years now), it was originally founded by [[Reggie Marquez]], and [[Inuyasha Overlord]]. The hangout was originally a 1024 plot for the "brothers" to live in. After sometime, Reggie's account was disabled due to payment issues. Inuyasha Overlord continue to take care of the parcel untill it moved to Gordon, where it became a mainstream hangout. After a year Inuyasha left the parcel due to his payment issues and continued on with his sl. Shortly after Reggie returned on an alternate account [[Reggie Clifton]] who brought FP back to teengrid alongside [[Phox Sillanpaa]] in hopes that it would reach mainstream again, which it did. Furry Plateau quickly reached the top of the pop-list with it's "housing for homeless furs" a program started inorder to help new furries adjust to the community. This housing project became big enough to put FP at the top of the popular list for another six months. The land soon became too small to contain the community and the group continued on to create the FP Peacelands alongside [[Nicelus Borelly]]. The "four founding furs" have been through hell and back and now continue the community on the sims Citivas and Leviathan.

Teen Second Life (TSL) Fur Fest (TSLFF) is the Teen Grid's first [[furry]] and [[anthropomorphic]]s [[convention]]. TSLFF was founded by Ferret Surface ([[Ferret Vulpsi]]) and the first TSLFF was held in 2007 on August 17th, 18th, and 19th mainly in the sim of Unreal. The convention was mainly attended by members of the FP, FN (TSL), and Tiamat communities however the con was a grid wide event and made history as the first furry convention (or convention of any kind for that matter) to be held on the Teen Grid.

Castle Dark Haven is a huge furry castle located within an ancient mystical forest on Growl1. Owned and operated by [[Growl Fardel]] and [[Nilsninian Dryke]], the castle and forest offer many distractions. Concealed surprises may also be found by unsuspecting adventurers within the vastness of the castle.

Rated mature, Dark Haven is open to all furs and offers an Avatar Shopping Center, the Twisted Tails Dance Club, private skyboxes, a [[yiff]] lounge, yiff dungeon, hot tub area and beautiful scenic areas for peaceful relaxation.

These two estates are run by Draconian Estates, a subsidiary of [[Draconian Enterprises]].

Drachen is a scaly and furry region that is home to the Dragon Spire, a scaly themed dance club. It is also the location of Waster's Mall, a shopping centre. Land is currently available for tenants should shops or private business owners wish to expand.

Amaru is a region to the west of Drachen that is the home of a new Anthro club "Constellation. The region also contains an art gallery known as the Mouseface Gallery, HermHQ, Doog Labs, Pavi's Avi's and The Water Plant (formerly The Tool Shed) which are all part of Hantu's collective lands. Residences in this world are part of the 'Spamalot' subdivision and can be found on the ground around the club in addition to the sky at 400m.

Both regions contain sandboxes for furs without land to create items on.

== "Second Life Furry" logo ==

In (early 2006?), a "furry admin" meeting for all furry and/or furry-friendly sims' administrators or owners was held to discuss several unifying strategies regarding the fandom population in world ([[Inferniel Solvang]] was the lead fur for this particular encounter.) Of the many proposals, one was the creation of a common, official symbol or logo for identifying purposes for sim or fur.

The final design, a SL logo inspired image, came to be thanks to the design of SL [[furry artist]], [[Yiffy Yaffle]]. The logo can be viewed on most of the older furry sims, with propagation to newer ones going at a slow, but steady rate.

As of version 1.6.0, Second Life now hooks [[Wikipedia:Quicktime|Quicktime]], if it is installed on the user's system, to provide an interface that allows one to watch movies within the client itself. A '''very''' fast connection is suggested in this case, as you will be streaming world data ''and'' a video at the same time. If Quicktime is not installed, the user will be reminded that Quicktime is needed to watch video within the client when they enter a parcel with video.

A number of furs use the video feature to watch the [[Funday PawPet Show]] on their land.

Some users have taken advantage of this new feature to bring forward a new business: Movie Rentals. One may rent adult movies from a couple of the businesses in Second Life, for the express purpose of being able to watch pornography on their land for a couple of hours.

== Preview Grid ==
As Linden Lab draws closer to a potential release, be it a sub-version upgrade, or a full point-release jump, they release preview versions of the client, to allow all interested parties to test the new client and its features. This is extremely important to builders, scripters, and texturers, as knowing how the new software will handle their works is very important.

The Preview client is run on a separate grid from the current client, which means there are less people to interact with. Most of the people available test their wares, making sure they won't have to do a full rebuild or rescript for the next version, as well as reporting bugs.

== Technical advice ==

Due to the amount of data that is sent between the client (you) and the servers, Second Life requires a fast internet connection, at least 128kbps, though more (768kbps or better) is highly recommended, at least 512MB of RAM (preferably at least 1024), and a CPU faster than 800MHz, though the bare minimum will not be as pleasant an experience. Linden Lab suggests that you invest in hardware that will exceed the minimum specs. There are also specific graphics card requirements due to the game making use of a certain OpenGL standard. The system requirements for interested people is listed at the Second Life website partially, and more exact requirements can be found inside its technical support area.

Although it is not impossible to use a dial-up connection with Second Life, nearly every option of the game requires serious cutting back; close to the bare minimum. This makes the experience flatter and less pleasant, with lag so heavy that movement is difficult and awkward with occasional stop-frame style "clipping" animation. Walking forward one step, for example, might occasionally result in sliding forward more then a yard or two before being snapped back to your intended position in a rather sudden jerk, or scenery change. Sometimes, said movement could make you sink through the ground or pass through other objects (like a wall) before the snap-back occurs. Then you find you need another of the regular 24MB to 25[[Wikipedia:Megabyte|MB]] updates to play. There aren't many dial-up users on Second Life as a result. ISDN provides a usable experience, but only just. Mobile broadband solutions such as UMTS or HSDPA are usually good enough, however.

Second Life has been dealing with issues over ATI's video card drivers for quite a while. It has become practice on the forums to suggest to ATi users to pick up the [http://www.omegadrivers.net/ Omega Drivers], a set of user-modified drivers recognized by ATi (according to their author) as "''the best-modded drivers in the Internet''". These Omega Drivers enable features that Second Life can use which aren't easily enabled in the default drivers.

It was described by its creator [[Richard Chandler]] as "a cross between an [[Amateur press association|APA]] and a [[fanzine]]."

== History ==

When Richard Chandler was first getting started in [[furry fandom]], he became aware of two APAs, ''[[Rowrbrazzle]]'' and its predecessor, ''[[Vootie]]''. He discovered that although he heard about them, he was not able to locate any copies to view because they were only available to members; ''Vootie'' had ceased publication before ''Rowrbrazzle'' began, and the waiting list to join the later was estimated to be three years long at the time he inquired. While he hadn't seen either APA, he had seen copies of some of the artwork inside them and was very impressed.

Lacking drawing skills and not wanting to wait to join, Richard Chandler decided to start his own fanzine in the fall of 1989. Feeling shut out from the other publications, he decided to make it open to subscribers, and created the first APA that paid royalties. Since he was not well known, he arranged the finances as a non-profit, figuring that would make him look more trustworthy (this was very important to him, and he made other efforts to uphold it as his standard).

[[Matt High]], of the [[comic book]] company [[Antarctic Press]] is credited by Richard Chandler as the person who coined the term "APA/'zine" to describe a publication like ''Gallery''.

When he discontinued publication, Richard Chandler stated he was having trouble finding fresh talent and people willing to buy new issues, and felt these were due in part to easy self-publication and the availability of free artwork on the [[Wikipedia:Internet|Internet]], and his own inability to attend fan [[convention]]s to sell them.

== Appearance ==

Physically, ''Gallery'' was 8.5 inches wide and 11 inches tall, and many issues were between 200 and 300 pages with 25-32 artists contributing. It was printed (black and white Xerographically) on 20# bond with 60# cardstock covers, and bound with heavy-duty staples, flattened and covered with black masking tape.

== Policies ==

''Gallery'''s rules became a model for other APA/'zines like ''[[Huzzah]]'' and ''[[Yarf!]]'', and helped keep the friendly atmosphere of "give and take" from an APA in a publicly accessible fanzine.

There were three types of members: Member Artists, Contributors, and Subscribers.

*Member Artists were artists whose work was accepted for publication. Member Artists received one copy of ''Gallery'' at cost. Although there were no waiting lists, new Member Artists were required to be Contributors in the first or second issues after they joined or be dropped immediately. If a Member Artist did not contribute artwork for three consecutive issues, the future issues would be sent on Subscriber terms (see below), and that Member Artist was considered a Subscriber until another contribution was received.
*:Member Artists could also submit advertisements of up to one page for inclusion in one issue. They were solely responsible for the accuracy and content of such ads, and could promote any publication or artwork in which the artist is creatively involved. They were often resubmitted for later issues.
*Contributors were a subset of the Member Artists who have contributed artwork to a particular issue, and in addition to copies were paid a royalty of 15¢ for each copy sold.
*Subscribers were people who wanted to receive ''Gallery'' and had sent in money in advance to pay for those issues. They received each copy at cover price (computed at 35¢ per artist and rounded up to the nearest dollar) plus the royalties owed to the Contributors.

All three groups paid postage and handling.

Royalties were based entirely on participation rather than page count to make accounting simpler. Even so, the price of each issue still fluctuated because there were often different numbers of Contributors with each issue. To accommodate this, ''Gallery'' used an account system, making it possible for Subscribers to pay only for what they were getting. After payments were made into a subscription account, only three things were deducted from it -- the printing cost of each copy sent, royalties for each artist in that issue, and the postage and handling.

== Artwork ==

Anyone who was able to demonstrate the talent to express themselves artistically was welcome to try out for admission as a Member Artist, whether professional or amateur. Although many of the artists were [[furry fandom|furry fans]], there was never a requirement for [[anthropomorphic]] or [[funny animal]] art, nor even a theme or other restrictions on creativity (subscribers were required to sign an age statement).

Like in an APA, Member Artists were invited based upon the art sent in for review. Richard Chandler stated he looked for things like anatomy, varying line weight, balance, shadows, textures, backgrounds. He also preferred character interaction and pictures that seemed to tell a story, especially comic strips, and considered a good sense of humor to be a plus.

Although content was entirely the responsibility of the Contributors (including the political, sexual, or religious nature of any artwork), he had final choice on whether something would not be used, and warned against personal attacks, and copyright and trademark violations. Another prohibition was against contributions of which 50% had been previously published, or simultaneously submitted to other publications (exceptions were made for limited, members-only publications such as ''Rowrbrazzle'').

'''''Trouble's Tales''''' (also known as ''Tanj's Tales'') is a space-opera [[furotica]] series that has lasted over thirty stories, as well as inspired art and 'spinoff' stories. [[Kittiara]] is the author of the series, although she has collaborated with a co-author on a handful of the stories. The series began in 1997, and the most recent story, which the author states is the "final episode", was posted on 12 July 2005.

At the beginning of the series, the titular Trouble (whose real name is Sou An Ki) and the rest of the crew of a tramp freighter are railroaded by a corrupt government, with Trouble herself being sold to the Elysium Academy, a facility for training sex slaves. After enduring a long, sometimes erotic and sometimes harrowing ordeal, she completes the training and is sold to her new master.

Although Trouble is technically a sex slave, her new master (who is never named and is known simply as "The Lion"), the leader of a space pirate gang, gives her a considerable amount of freedom -- enough that if she wished it, she could easily take the pirate's best ship, fly out into space, and sell everyone out to the government for a hefty reward. However, she not only does not do so, she actually falls in love with her master, and forms deep relationships with the rest of her crewmates. One of the core themes of ''Trouble's Tales'' - besides the ubiquitous kinky wanton sex and the silver-formfitting-spacesuits-and-rayguns space opera - is the development of trust among the core members of the team.

Many artists, including [[JonwI]], [[Ironbadger]], and [[Paul Pinewood]], have drawn characters and scenes from the story. A few authors, including [[SMWolf]], have written works of fan fiction using characters from ''Trouble's Tales''.

==Story list==
The titles are followed by the "Stardate", which in theory is supposed to indicate when the story takes place. However, a couple of them are missing stardates, and the dates in book three apparently switch to a year/month format vs. the decimal fraction of a year used in the first two books. They should not, in any case, be treated as reliable indicators of the timespan covered during or between stories. The order shown here is believed to be the correct storyline sequence.

The stories in book one are much shorter and read like chapters or short stories. Later in books two and three the stories get much longer, many of them long enough to be novels in themselves. Some of the stories in book one were written to "fill in the gaps" after parts of book two had been written and posted.

It is believed that Kittiara had planned to write a Book Four, but for personal reasons had to end the series earlier than originally planned and decided to tie up all the loose ends and finish the series in the last two stories.

==Controversy==
Trouble lives up to her name.

In the first days of September 2000, an author known as Renee Newsom threatened to sue the author. Her claim was that Kittiara's character Trouble was a rip off of one of her own characters, a [[LARP]] character about whom she claimed to have written some stories. In an effort to avoid legal action, Kittiara changed Trouble's name to Tanj (an acronym for "There Ain't No Justice").

However, the only common ground the two charcters shared was that they were both cheetahs and were both pleasure slaves. Kittiara's character has appeared in multiple stories, with substantial character development, while Newsom's Trouble was in two brief stories and a LARP. Kittiara's Trouble is from a science-fiction world; Newsom's character is from an alternate history. Kittiara's Trouble was a poor engineer, working her way up from the bottom; Newsom's Trouble is a mage born to high society.

Legal advice given to Kittiara has indicated that she would have nothing to lose in court besides lawyer fees, which is something she can't afford. Additionally, Kittiara would have to disclose her real name, and she values her privacy a great deal. For these reasons, Kittiara still calls Trouble Tanj, but most Trouble fans still call her Trouble.
==Trouble in Print==
In 2005 Kittiara gave her permission to the furry author known as [[EternalWanderer]] to reformat her Trouble's Tale works into a collected printer friendly version. The effort took a total of just over 2 years and its last segment was made available in 2007. Its prohibitive length lead the editor to turn to [[wikipedia:Lulu (publisher)|Lulu]] for production of printed copies for their own use. With permission from Kittiara the print version has been made available at cost via Lulu.
