Doc Rat is a PG-rated webcomic about an Australian general practice run by a rat, treating a varied cast of anthropomorphic animals. It began on the 26th of June, 2006, and it is drawn by "Jenner", a full-time doctor.<!-- Jenner does not release his real name, as a professional courtesy. -->

History and premise
The character of Doc Rat has appeared in various publications, both medical and non-medical, since the mid-1990s. The comic strip is set in the suburbs of a major Australian city; judging by some of the current events referenced (particularly, patients affected by the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009), it is most likely analogous to Melbourne.

Jenner assisted Bill Holbrook in creating a realistic medical emergency during the wedding of Lindesfarne Dewclaw to Fenton Fuscus in Kevin and Kell in 2010.

Presently, several compilations (treasuries) of Doc Rat are available for sale, both online through the comic website, and at the Minotaur comic book store in Melbourne. Jenner did make an appearance at Anthrocon 2010, where he did debut the fifth treasury. The treasuries come out more often than once a year.

The comic started off with mostly puns and has changed over time to more dramatic story arcs. It still sparkles with Jenner's creativity. Doc Rat is linked to the Cross Time Forum.
Characters
Main characters
Benjamin Rat
*Dr Benjamin Rat M.B.,B.S. D.R.A.N.Z.C.O.G. F.R.A.C.G.P.
Ben is a thirty-something, Australian general practitioner rat, battling the odds to run a solo practice in the suburb of Templeton, in the city of Fornor, state of Flora. After setting up shop eight years ago, prepared to do what it took to succeed against the long hours, on-call work, endless red tape and local competition from the nearby medical centre, he continues to fight to stay afloat.

An experiment with a very entrepreneurial practice manager, Charmane Prideaux, didn’t solve the problem - she was a hungry lioness, and even now she’d gone, Ben’s accountant is still finding the leftover bones.

For the moment, though, Ben remains good-natured and conscientious, carrying out a professional job to the best of his ability. He tries to make people better. He also gives money to street buskers and is kind to pets.
After a fraught and adventurous romance, he married Daniella Hood, his tae kwon do instructor and dentist. The two rats are now just settling down into married life together. (Although this is not forgetting he has an ex-wife and daughter somewhere in America.)

Daniella Hood-Rat
*Dr Daniella Hood-Rat (B.D.S.)
Daniella - Danni (or Daz to her closest friends) - is a rat dentist in the Sullivan Street Dental Clinic, and also a lecturer at the Bluegum College, several suburbs across town. She’s an instructor in tae kwon do, with a black belt third dan. The discipline she cultivated in this quest helped her through the rocky times of rebellion against a family unaccepting of her decision to be a single professional woman.

Her checkered past includes a jilted romance with a rabbit, Russell, which left her with a certain bitterness against the insular values of tight-knit rabbit society. But after treading a long road of independence, against all the odds, she fell in love with the gentle, funny and far-from-dynamic Ben. Now, they are husband and wife. She has a very nosy and obnoxious family.

* Gizelle Thompson, a Thompson's gazelle.
Zell has been working as the receptionist at Doc Rat's medical practice since its beginning, eight years ago. Through the hardest of times, she's stuck by him loyally, with devotion and a fiercely short temper. And while she can sometimes be a touch over-protective, she always tries to shield Ben from the slings and arrows of outrageous patients. And creditors. And lawyers. While trying to keep him on-time with his appointments and up-to-date with his paperwork (did I mention the short temper?)
Gizelle is married to Gazza and has no children.

* Mary Scamper (qualifications), a rabbit
If you need a good, straightforward, uncomplicated nurse, there's no one better than Mary. Her open and trusting nature is a great asset when folk in need are looking for comfort. She runs the treatment room with order and discipline.
Mary is particularly good with children - but as a rabbit, she'd have to be. Above all, as a nurse and a valuable part of the team, she really knows her stuff.
She is an elder in her rabbit community and gives private relationship counselling in Secret Bunny Business.
Mary and her husband Tom have six children, all of whom have left the burrow.

Supporting characters
* Phil Krubnuckle (qualifications), a gorilla
Phil, the local pharmacist, is the proud owner of a successful small business that has been in operation for forty years. He didn't get where he is today without a very sharp sense of commerce. His memory can reach back to the good old days when he would turn a good living by mixing up squill of oxymel, until no-one could remember what it was used for (and then for about a year after that.) On the down side, he has stuck with his well-worn professional sales pitch for so long that he could be accused of being behind the times. But then, no one accuses a gorilla of anything.
Phil loves fishing and playing jazz saxophone, but otherwise, his private life is his own. Any argument?

* Wilbur Fuzz, a bear of some kind
Ever the prankster, Wilbur puts a cheerful face on his diabetes and heart disease, despite having already died once (in the doctor‘s waiting room - now, there’s a story). Some people may tire of his endless stream of bad jokes. But many people hopes he succeeds in his romantic quest to find the woman of his dreams before it’s too late. And novelty t-shirts aren’t helping his pulling power.
a koala, and a frequent patient, very sarcastic and likes to pull pranks on staff and fellow patients;
recently suffered a heart attack, and was saved by Ben and Mary.
Recently discovered he has diabetes.

Melanie Hyde, a rhinoceros
Mel has been Daniella’s best friend since they met at tae kwon do, some years ago. Once this woman has made up her mind, she is unstoppable - if you get in her way, you’re history. She has a boyfriend, Max Horne. Before Daniella married Ben, Melanie was also Daniella's roommate.

Siobhan Seamróg, a shrew
Daniella’s dental receptionist and unofficial liaison between the two practices.

Jack Rat, a rat
Jack is Ben’s brother. He’s a lawyer, and after his divorce, he decided to go into divorce law. He and Ben have had their differences in the past, but his help with Ben’s search for his estranged wife brought them back together.

Winston Rat, a rat
Winston is Ben’s father. The extent of Winston’s dementia became apparent when his wife Lizzie died of breast cancer, eight years ago. He now lives in a nursing home, and Ben visits him every Sunday. Had a rare moment of clarity when he met Daniella.

Daniella’s family, the Hoods, rats every one of them
Dear, oh dear, do we have to deal with them? A father, mother, two sisters, two brothers-in-law, a brother and a sister-in-law. All older than she is. That’s it. Now rack off.

Julian Sands, a camel (No relation to the English actor.)
Julian is a distinguished and respectable gentleman who spent much of his life in Africa. Sadly, his first partner, Jan, died there of an infectious illness in the prime of his life. Recently, Julian managed to put his lingering grief behind him and find a new partner, and so he now happily lives with Kenneth Roads. His major injuries in a mugging were successfully treated by Ben, Mary and Daniella.

Kenneth Roads, a Thomson’s gazelle
Julian’s vibrant and funky lifemate.

Pat O’Kake, an Irish setter
Also known as Pat the Dog. He’s a well-manicured executive. He studied a couple of years of law before changing to a degree in business and information technology. He has done very well for himself in the IT field, particularly with the lucrative on-line portion of the Florists of the Night franchise, owned by his partner, Pat the Tiger. Loves the finest things in life - drives a deep red Lotus Elise. Some would call him driven. Occasionally nosy, he is known and used for his keen sense of smell.

Ravi Patel, a tiger (No relation to the American actor.)
Also known as Pat the Tiger. A deceptively sensitive tiger. Rides a black and yellow Ducati Monster 1100. Lives with Pat the Dog.

Flopsy Jaegermond (secretly Jaegermond é Lockley), a wolf
Fangripp Jaegermond is a gentle wolf who, after a lifetime of taunts and ridicule from his own kind, began to feel an increasing affinity for - not to mention a fascination with - rabbits. One day, he nervously approached a young doe rabbit whose husband had apparently walked out the door for the final time, and they fell in love. After a short courtship, Fangripp took her into his arms and asked her to marry him, at the same time embracing his cruel nickname of Flopsy with pride as his own. He also looked after her subsequent children as his own, in accordance with traditional rabbit practices. Although not naturally bright, he has applied himself to scholarship in Lapine lore, as is expected of all bucks and does of the tribe, and it was this dedication, as well as an unthinking act of conspicuous bravery, that led to the rabbit Lord Lockley’s adopting him into the noble family.

Jasmine Jaegermond (secretly Jaegermond é Lockley), a rabbit
Why would the air-headed doe rabbit, Jasmine Down, fall for a hulking wolf? If she had really thought about it, perhaps she wouldn’t have. But she went with her heart, and Flopsy has repaid her trust with dogged loyalty. Introducing a wolf into the mysteries of Secret Bunny Business has landed her in very hot water from her own rabbit community, but following the public approval from Lord Lockley, perhaps she will start to get a more sympathetic ear or two from her people.

Lorna Lappin, a rabbit
This old lady is 73 years old. She knows she is wise and experienced, and she has little patience for people who do not appreciate this fact. Although she may look frail on the outside, Lorne lives by the motto the moment you slow down you start to die.

Shirley Dryandra, a numbat
As an endangered species, Shirl sees it as her duty to have as many children as possible, even when she doesn’t know if her latest man will last. She lives with her mother, Lily, and raises the brood of four (or five, no-one’s sure) children. Her latest partner is Brayden. Shirl is a bogan numbat, and she and her older children take delight in scaring her youngest, Jarrad, when he has to go to the doctor. Her eldest, Jackson, is addicted to video games. She has a new boyfriend, Brayden, whom she had another litter with.

Lily Dryandra, a numbat
Shirl’s mother, who has successfully smoked her way into lung disease. She’s just hanging on to her status of family matriarch, having succeeded in whipping Brayden out of the road of crime and back onto the straight and narrow.

Jackson Dryandra, a numbat
Mid-teens, video game addict

Jarrad Dryandra, a numbat
Seven years old, he spent his early life terrified of doctors, and given how many bad experiences he had with asthma, who could blame him? But he has a bursting, florid imagination, expressed in his self-produced comic books. Favourite character: Captain Kerpow.

Pippie Green, a border collie
Also seven years old, she was adopted by her uncle Col and then befriended by Jarrad Dryandra after losing her entire family in a horrendous bushfire.

Mavis Wattle, a koala
Koalas may be rare, but old women of the like of Mavis are in plentiful supply. She is four square and straight down the line.

Elsie Tabb, a cat
Another venerable woman. Some are wide and some are narrow. Joan compliments the duo with Mavis, although she sometimes feels the intimidated one of the two.

Jim and Jeanette, a pair of lynxes
Part of the senior population of Ben’s practice.

Mandy, a kangaroo
Mandy is into a natural lifestyle, who would just as readily take an ear candle as an antibiotic. Or to be doubly safe, both. Her son Donovan is allowed to run free and wild, without the stultifying shackles of patriarchal discipline. It’s beautiful. Mandy fervently believes in various "complementary therapies" of dubious safety and efficacy, to the horror of Ben.

Nichaud, a goat kid
She’s adorable, and she eats every item she can get her hooves on, because that’s what goats do in comic strips.

The unnamed, overweight, little kangaroo joey
Hey, he knows he has a health issue, and now he’s doing something about it, okay? Get off his back, sport.

Allan Finchley, some kind of mongrel dog
When the struggle against alcohol addiction is a constant battle, his resident fleas may just tip the scales in his favour, as they have begun to act as a "conscience" for him to help him recover.

Rufus, a fox
One of the many drug reps visiting Ben on regular basis. He works for Animpharm, whose latest great drug is Zappo and whose marketing division is an office full of totally insane meerkats.

The unnamed snow leopard
You can understand his passion for environmental advocacy. He’s fighting for the survival of his endangered people.

The unnamed badger
A lawyer. Expect jokes without mercy.

Doe Rémi, the solar tea doe
A one-off joke

A bull who’s obsessed with his bowels and laxatives
Joke number two

Harry P. Otter
Not Harry Potter

Dr “Chippy” Chang, a panda
Ben’s ethnic Chinese doctor friend from way back in medical school chose to specialise as a dermatologist, while Ben proceeded to general practice.

Charmane Prideaux, a lioness
Don’t get her wrong: Charmane stayed within the letter of the law in every practice she managed, and boosted efficiency by maximising yield and cutting waste to the bone. It’s just that some people don’t feel comfortable when she smiles with that hungry glint in her eye. Ben hired her as a practice manager, but she used the position to cheat the Australian Medicare system. She did the same for a previous practice that went under after she left. Ben ultimately was able to sack her without irreparable damage to the practice. She did introduce computers to the practice.

Old character sheet, Do not discard until you have picked out all the good facts and put them up.

* Julian Sands - a camel and another frequent patient of Ben's. After he came out, he was beaten up by a group of thugs who eventually were caught after also trying to mug Ben and Daniella.
* Jasmine Jaegermond (nee Down) - a ditzy female rabbit; married to Flopsy, has four children.
* Fangripp "Flopsy" Jaegermond - a big wolf. He believes himself to be a rabbit in the body of a wolf. His marriage to Jasmine led to their ostracism from the larger rabbit ethnic group until he almost killed himself saving a group of rabbit children from a runaway cart. His wolf pack is not completely happy with the marriage.
* Male Pig - a businessman who is near-permanently attached to his mobile phone
* Dr. Bell - an anglerfish; He is a partner in Daniella's dental practice
* Honey - Ben's ex-wife. They married young, and quickly separated. They forgot about their marriage until Ben fell in love with Daniella, forcing him to scramble to find her and divorce her. By then, she was living in the United States. She got pregnant by him, but the separation occured before their daughter was born.

* Gizelle Thompson, a Thompson's gazelle.

Minor characters

And novelty t-shirts aren’t helping his pulling power.
a koala, and a frequent patient, very sarcastic and likes to pull pranks on staff and fellow patients;
recently suffered a heart attack, and was saved by Ben and Mary.

Siobhan Seamróg, a shrew
Daniella’s dental receptionist and unofficial liaison person between the two practices.

The extent of Winston’s dementia became apparent when his wife died of breast cancer, eight years ago. He now lives in a nursing home, and Ben visits him every Sunday.

* Pat - another frequent patient; homosexual, and occasionally nosy. Known and used for his sense of smell.

Wilbur Fuzz, a bear of some kind
Ever the prankster, Wilbur puts a cheerful face on his diabetes and heart disease, despite having already died once (in the doctor‘s waiting room - now, there’s a story). Some people may tire of his endless stream of bad jokes. But many people hopes he succeeds in his romantic quest to find the woman of his dreams before it’s too late. And novelty t-shirts aren’t helping his pulling power.

Mandy, a kangaroo who fervently believes in various "complementary therapies" of dubious safety and efficacy to the horror of Ben.

Nichaud, a goat kid
She’s adorable, and she eats every item she can get her hooves on, because that’s what goats do in comic strips.

The unnamed, overweight, little kangaroo joey
Hey, he knows he has a health issue, and now he’s doing something about it, okay? Get off his back, sport.

Allan Finchley, some kind of mongrel dog
When the struggle against alcohol addiction is a constant battle, his resident fleas may just tip the scales in his favour.

About Jenner
Jenner has been an Australian newspaper and magazine cartoonist for over twenty years, drawing professionally and non-professionally in both the Australian and US scene in the small amount of time outside his duties as a full-time doctor. He is currently working in a city general practice, and has adopted the anonymous pen name Jenner as an ethical courtesy. Although a daily strip on the Internet is four years old, his Doc Rat character has been appearing in medical and non-medical magazines for over a decade, including Bush Alert and vicdoc.

Old character sheet, Do not discard until you have picked out all the good facts and put them up.

* Julian Sands - a camel and another frequent patient of Ben's. After he came out, he was beaten up by a group of thugs who eventually were caught after also trying to mug Ben and Daniella.
His wolf pack is not completely happy with the marriage.
* Allan - a male wolf who is alcoholic. His fleas have begun to act as a "conscience" for him to help him recover.
* Jack Rat - Ben's brother, an attorney. He assisted in Ben's search for his estranged wife so he could divorce her and lawfully marry Daniella.

Currently, four treasuries of Doc Rat are available for sale, both online through the comic website and at the Minotaur comic book store in Melbourne. Jenner will make an appearance at Anthrocon 2010, where he will debut the fifth treasury.
* Gizelle Thompson - a Thomson's Gazelle, Gizelle is the practice's receptionist.
The furry fandom mostly comprises a male population. A 1998 survey of 350 furries found that males comprised 85% of the population, as compared to a 2005 U.S. Census report of 49% in the U.S. as a whole <ref>The Sociology of Furry Fandom by [[David J. Female refers to organisms that produce ova, or egg cells. Hormones, genetics, and overall form are other physical characteristics that typically differentiate females from other sexes.

Females and furry
Femaleness occupies places within the furry fandom, in both "real life" and virtual communities, that don't reflect its place in the larger society.

In "real life", females are drastically in the minority: A 1998 survey of 350 furries found that females comprised 15% of the population, as compared to a 2005 U.S. Census report of 51% in the U.S. as a whole <ref>The Sociology of Furry Fandom by [[David J.
In virtual communities, however, there appears to be a higher percentage of female participants, as a substantial number of male players control female characters. (One saying about the online world FurryMUCK goes, "The guys are guys, and the girls are, too.")

Those female furries who play female characters online report that they get unwanted attention from some male players who have a tendency to (falsely) believe that they may have a chance of getting RL sex or a relationship from female players. In addition, some report alienation because of common depictions of females within the furry community (like the 'foxy lady').

As in any community, (male) views of females differ from person to person, and it is typically the extreme that is seen by the mainstream society as being normal within the furry community. This, in turn, may discourage females from joining the furry community, and encourage them to keep their furry interests 'in the closet', or refrain from mentioning their furry interests to others.

The Suburban Jungle is a webcomic written by John "The Gneech" Robey. It is currently hosted on Keenspot. The strip is Robey's second effort.

The Suburban Jungle is set in a fictional urban community and is centered around the life of its star, Tiffany Tiger (a model/TV personality), and her circle of friends and associates.

The comic's storylines are usually of the "slice-of-life" variety and are centered on model and actress Tiffany Tiger, her friends, and her relatives. The comic chronicles Tiffany's ventures into the world of fashion and entertainment, as well as her love life and the lives of those she knows. The writing style combines light humor, mostly appropriate for all ages, with romance, and sometimes even adventure.

The world of The Suburban Jungle is like our own reality but it is solely populated by anthropomorphic animals. Furthermore, predation (in the style of Kevin and Kell) exists, but with many laws, both written and moral, concerning where and when a kill may be made. While this was prominent in the early years of the strip (The Gneech has been overheard saying "I just thought that was how furry strips were done"), it has been relegated to the background in recent years.

Currently, Tiffany is involved with Leonard Lion, the owner of her favorite bar, The Watering Hole.

The Suburban Jungle is available online free of charge at suburbanjungle.com. A new strip is usually released every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with some artwork of interest on Saturday. The complete archives are also available. There have also been four books published by Plan 9 Publishing:

*La Vida Panthera: ISBN 1-929462-08-5
The books, along with additional merchandise, are also available at Merchandise Maven.

Doverspeak
Doverspeak, or D-speak, is a term used by The Suburban Jungle fans to describe the peculiar speech impediment of Dover Cheetah, one of the strip's main characters. Dover is a computer programmer who can only speak in code.

Dover Cheetah is a character in The Suburban Jungle. He is a computer programmer who worked in the I.T. Departments of MegaHuge ConGloMaCo and Amalgatronix Corporation. He is so good at his job that, until recently, working with computer code all day had afflicted him with a strange speech impediment: he could only talk in a strange amalgam of normal English and generic computer code, referred to by fans as "D-speak" or "Doverspeak". For example, "Hello Tiffany, my name is Dover" comes out as:

SET GREETING=HELLO(TIFFANY)<br>LET MYNAME=DOVER

This impediment, coupled with Dover's somewhat geeky personality (he has been known to follow trends such as trading card games, online shooters, and console video games) did not make him popular with girls, until Tiffany's half-sister Comfort took an interest in him. The two quickly fell in love, later got engaged, and eventually married.

Dover began college at DeMontfort University in 1992 and got his friend Kurt Kingston to get him on the football team as the school mascot in an effort to win the affections of their R.A., Chase Cheetah. He later transferred to Tech after being involved in the incident that partially destroyed Richter Hall, which may ultimately have been better for him since Tech had a stronger computer curriculum and an athletic department focused on track and field.

Dover has a likeable enough personality, but being an only child in a rich family has left him somewhat spoiled. Until recently, he would go to great lengths to get his way - in the most memorable incident, he caused a "BIG HONKIN' CRASH!", sabotaging MegaHuge ConGloMaCo's computer system so that Tiffany would have to work overtime and miss her date with Conrad. Dover was fired for his actions, though he was eventually rehired with a major pay cut. He also hacked the company's system once before, to make the hiring system recommended Tiffany for the vacant programming position. Comfort has had a beneficial effect on his personality since she makes him so happy.

When Amalgatronix took over MegaHuge, Dover was made I.T. manager. He had almost continual conflict with his boss, Lagston Swine, and nonexistent support for I.T. combined with the lack of employees left Dover to fend for himself, much to his annoyance. After Amalgatronix went under, Dover worked at a Roebucks coffee shop for about a year, at which time he was offered a job as a programmer at a new company started by former MegaHuge CEO Oswald Proboscis.

Another distinctive trait of Dover is his total inability to hunt, partly because he has never had to, partly because of his squeamishness, and partly because of his severe case of prey empathy. Leonard makes an effort to teach him, but Dover proves to be hopeless as a hunter. The final blow to his predatory career was being beaten up by Ramses after trying to eat him.

A current development in Dover's personality due to a mixture of several months of no real work except for a job at Roebucks and the shock of being offered a new technical position by Eddie Ape, Dover's D-Speak was jolted out of him, he now speaks with a normal, understandable language which, at times can be a bit of an annoyance with how many words one breath can send off.

The unicorn is a legendary creature embodied like a horse, but slender and with a single &mdash; usually spiral &mdash; horn growing out of its forehead. Though the popular image of the unicorn is that of a white horse differing only in the horn, the traditional unicorn has a billy-goat beard, a lion's tail, and cloven hoofs, which distinguish them from horses. Interestingly, these modifications make the horned ungulate more realistic, since only cloven-hoofed animals have horns (see "man-made unicorns" below).

Marianna Mayer has observed (The Unicorn and the Lake), "The unicorn is the only fabulous beast that does not seem to have been conceived out of human fears. In even the earliest references he is fierce yet good, selfless yet solitary, but always mysteriously beautiful. He could be captured only by unfair means, and his single horn was said to neutralize poison."

In medieval lore, the alicorn is the spiraled horn of the unicorn and is said to be able to heal and neutralize poisons. This is derived from Ctesias's reports on the unicorn in India, where it was used by the rulers of that place for anti-toxin purposes so as to avoid assassination.

The qilin, a creature in Chinese mythology, is sometimes called "the Chinese unicorn", but it is not directly related to the classical Western unicorn, having the body of a deer, the head of a lion, green scales and a long forth-curved horn. Currently, the word "kirin", in Japan, written with the same kanji (Chinese ideograms), is used to designate the giraffe as well as the mythical creature. Curiously, the Japanese mythological creature is usually portrayed as more closely resembling the Western Unicorn than the Chinese qilin, even though based on the Chinese myth.

Unicorns in prehistory
A cave painting in Lascaux, France depicts an animal with two straight horns emerging from its forehead. The simple perspective of the painting makes these two horns appear to be a single straight horn; since the species of the figure is otherwise unknown, it has received the moniker "the Unicorn". There have been unconfirmed reports of aboriginal paintings of unicorns at Namaqualand in southern Africa. . A passage of Bruce Chatwin's travel journal In Patagonia (1977) relates Chatwin's meeting a South American scientist who believed that unicorns were among South America's extinct megafauna of the Late Pleistocene, and that they were hunted out of existence by man in the 5th or 6th millennium BC. He told Chatwin, who later sought them out, about two aboriginal cave paintings of "unicorns" at Lago Posadas (Cerro de los Indios). Such possibilities, unconfirmed by fossils, would not have affected European legends.

Unicorns in antiquity
According to an interpretation of seals carved with an animal which resembles a bull (and which may in fact be a way of depicting bulls in profile), it has been claimed that the unicorn was a common symbol during the Indus Valley civilization, appearing on many seals. It may have symbolized a powerful group.

An animal called the re'em is mentioned in several places in the Bible, often as a metaphor representing strength; in the King James translation (and some other translations), this word is translated as "unicorn", producing phrases such as "His strength is as the strength of a unicorn". "The allusions to the re'em as a wild, untamable animal of great strength and agility, with mighty horns (Job xxxix. 9-12; Ps. xxii. 21, xxix. 6; Num. xxiii. 22, xxiv. 8; Deut. xxxiii. 17; comp. Ps. xcii. 11), best fit the aurochs (Bos primigenius). This view is supported by the Assyrian rimu, which is often used as a metaphor of strength, and is depicted as a powerful, fierce, wild, or mountain bull with large horns." (Jewish Encyclopedia: "unicorn") This animal was often depicted with only one horn visible in ancient Mesopotamian art.

The unicorn does not appear in early Greek mythology, but in Greek natural history, for Greek writers on natural history were convinced of the reality of the unicorn, which they located in India, a distant and fabulous realm for them. The Encyclop&aelig;dia Britannica collects classical references to unicorns: the earliest description is from Ctesias, who described in Indica white wild asses, fleet of foot, having on the forehead a horn a cubit and a half in length, colored white, red and black; from the horn were made drinking cups which were a preventive of poisoning. Aristotle must be following Ctesias when he mentions two one-horned animals, the oryx, a kind of antelope, and the so-called "Indian ass" (in Historia anim. ii. I and De part. anim. iii. 2).

In Roman times Pliny the Elder's Natural History (viii: 30 and xl: 106) mentions the oryx and an Indian ox (the rhinoceros, perhaps) as one-horned beasts, as well as the Indian ass, "a very ferocious beast, similar in the rest of its body to a horse, with the head of a deer, the feet of an elephant, the tail of a boar, a deep, bellowing voice, and a single black horn, two cubits in length, standing out in the middle of its forehead." Pliny adds that "it cannot be taken alive." Aelian (De natura. anim. iii. 41; iv. 52), quoting Ctesias, adds that India produces also a one-horned horse, and says (xvi. 20) that the "monoceros" was sometimes called carcazonon, which may be a form of the Arabic "carcadn", meaning "rhinoceros". Strabo (book xv) says that in India there were one-horned horses with stag-like heads.

Medieval unicorns
Medieval knowledge of the fabulous beast stems from biblical and ancient sources, and the creature was variously represented as a kind of wild ass, goat, or horse. By A.D. 200, Tertullian had called the unicorn a small fierce kidlike animal, a symbol of Christ. Ambrose, Jerome, and Basil agreed.

The predecessor of the medieval bestiary, compiled in Late Antiquity and known as Physiologus popularized an elaborate allegory in which a unicorn, trapped by a maiden (representing the Virgin Mary) stood for the Incarnation. As soon as the unicorn sees her it lays its head on her lap and falls asleep. This became a basic emblematic tag that underlies medieval notions of the unicorn, justifying its appearance in every form of religious art.

The unicorn was also found in courtly terms: for some 13th century French authors such as Thibaut of Champagne and Richard of Fournival, the lover is as attracted to his lady as the unicorn is to the virgin. This version of salvation provided an alternative to God's love and was called heretical.

With the rise of humanism, the unicorn also acquired positive secular meanings, including chaste love and faithful marriage. It plays this role in Petrarch's Triumph of Chastity. It was a heraldic motif, appearing on the national arms and coins of Scotland. The royal throne of Denmark was made of "unicorn horns" (actually narwhal tusks). The same material was used for ceremonial cups because the unicorn's horn was believed to neutralize poison.

The translators of the King James Version of the Bible (1611) employed unicorn to translate re'em in Book of Job 39:9-12, providing an animal that was proverbial for its untamable nature for the unanswerable rhetorical questions:
:"Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib? Canst thou bind the unicorn with band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee? Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him? Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn?"

The unicorn, tamable only by a virgin woman, was well established in medieval lore by the time Marco Polo described them as
:"scarcely smaller than elephants. They have the hair of a buffalo and feet like an elephant's. They have a single large black horn in the middle of the forehead... They have a head like a wild boar's...They spend their time by preference wallowing in mud and slime. They are very ugly brutes to look at. They are not at all such as we describe them when we relate that they let themselves be captured by virgins, but clean contrary to our notions." It is clear that Polo was describing a rhinoceros.

In German, since the 16th century, the name unicorn ("einhorn") has become attached to the various rhinoceros.

In popular belief, examined wittily and at length by Sir Thomas Browne in his Pseudodoxia Epidemica unicorn horns could neutralize poisons (book III, ch. xxiii). Therefore, people who feared poisoning sometimes drank from goblets made of "unicorn horn". Alleged aphrodisiac qualities and other purported medicinal virtues also drove up the cost of "unicorn" products such as milk, hide, and offal. Unicorns were also said to be able to determine whether or not a woman was a virgin; in some tales, they could only be mounted by virgins.

The unicorn also served as a common symbol of indomitable pride and purity and of Jesus.

One traditional method of hunting unicorns involved entrapment by a virgin. Another involved angering a unicorn, fleeing from it toward a tree when it charged, and diving out of the way just before the tree, causing the unicorn to strike the tree, rendering it dead, unconscious, or stuck, held by its horn in the wood.

The famous late Gothic series of seven tapestry hangings, the Hunt of the Unicorn at The Cloisters, New York City is a high point in European tapestry manufacture, combining both secular and religious themes. In the series, richly dressed noblemen, accompanied by huntsmen and hounds, pursue a unicorn against millefleurs backgrounds or buildings and gardens. They bring the animal to bay with the help of a maiden who traps it with her charms, appear to kill it, and bring it back to a castle; in the last and most famous panel, &#8220;The Unicorn in Captivity,&#8221; the unicorn is shown bloody but now alive and happy, chained to a tree surrounded by a fence, in a field of flowers. Scholars continue to hunt the meaning of the resurrected Unicorn. The series was woven about 1500 in the Low Countries, probably Brussels or Liège, for an unknown patron. A set of six called the Dame á la licorne (Lady with the unicorn) at the Musée de Cluny, Paris, woven in the Southern Netherlands about the same time, pictures the five senses, the gateways to temptation, and finally Love ("A mon seul desir" the legend reads), with unicorns in each hanging.

Heraldry
In heraldry, a unicorn is depicted as a horse with a goat's cloven hooves and beard, a lion's tail, and a slender, spiral horn on its forehead. Whether because it was an emblem of the Incarnation or of the fearsome animal passions of raw nature, the unicorn was not widely used in early heraldry, but became popular from the fifteenth century, usually collared, an indication that its nature had been tempered.

It is probably best known from the royal coat of arms of Scotland and the United Kingdom: two unicorns support the Scottish arms; a lion and a unicorn support the UK arms. The arms of the Society of Apothecaries in London has two golden unicorn supporters.

Sources of the myth
Alleged skeletal evidence
A unicorn skeleton was supposedly found at Einhornhöhle ("Unicorn Cave") in Germany's Harz Mountains in 1663. Claims that the so-called unicorn had only two legs (and was constructed from fossil bones of mammoths and other animals) are contradicted or explained by accounts that souvenir-seekers plundered the skeleton; these accounts further claim that, perhaps remarkably, the souvenir-hunters left the skull, with horn. The skeleton was examined by Leibniz, who had previously doubted the existence of the unicorn, but was convinced thereby.

Baron Georges Cuvier maintained that as the unicorn was cloven-hoofed it must therefore have a cloven skull (making impossible the growth of a single horn), but this was later disproven by Dr. W. Franklin Dove, a University of Maine professor, who artificially fused the horn buds of a calf together, creating a one-horned bull.

P.T. Barnum once exhibited a unicorn skeleton that was exposed as a hoax.

The rhinoceros
Since the rhinoceros is the only land animal to possess a single horn, it has often been supposed that the unicorn legend originated from encounters between Europeans and rhinoceroses. The coelodont (Woolly Rhinoceros) would have been quite familiar to Ice-Age people.

Elasmotherium
One suggestion is that the unicorn myth is based on an extinct animal sometimes called the "Giant Unicorn" but known to scientists as Elasmotherium, a huge Eurasian rhinoceros native to the steppes, south of the range of the woolly rhinoceros of Ice Age Europe. Elasmotherium looked little like a horse, but it had a large single horn in its forehead. It seems to have become extinct about the same time as the rest of the glacial age megafauna, but it may have survived into historic times.

Elasmotherium probably died out in prehistoric times. However, according to the Nordisk familjebok and to space scientist Willy Ley, the animal may have survived long enough to be remembered in the legends of the Evenk people of Russia as a huge black bull with a single horn in the forehead.

There is also a testimony by the medieval traveller Ibn Fadlan, who is usually considered a reliable source, which indicates that Elasmotherium may have survived into historical times.

Ibn Fadlan's account states:
:There is nearby a wide steppe, and there dwells, it is told, an animal smaller than a camel, but taller than a bull. Its head is the head of a ram, and its tail is a bull’s tail. Its body is that of a mule and its hooves are like those of a bull. In the middle of its head it has a horn, thick and round, and as the horn goes higher, it narrows (to an end), until it is like a spearhead. Some of these horns grow to three or five ells, depending on the size of the animal. It thrives on the leaves of trees, which are excellent greenery. Whenever it sees a rider, it approaches and if the rider has a fast horse, the horse tries to escape by running fast, and if the beast overtakes them, it picks the rider out of the saddle with its horn, and tosses him in the air, and meets him with the point of the horn, and continues doing so until the rider dies. But it will not harm or hurt the horse in any way or manner.

:The locals seek it in the steppe and in the forest until they can kill it. It is done so: they climb the tall trees between which the animal passes. It requires several bowmen with poisoned arrows; and when the beast is in between them, they shoot and wound it unto its death. And indeed I have seen three big bowls shaped like Yemen seashells, that the king has, and he told me that they are made out of that animal’s horn.

Even if Elasmotherium is not the source, ordinary rhinoceroses may have some relation to the unicorn. In support of this claim, it has been noted that the 13th century traveller Marco Polo claimed to have seen a unicorn in Java, but his description (quoted above) makes it clear to the modern reader that he actually saw a Javanese rhinoceros.

It is therefore possible that the entire unicorn myth derives from rhinoceros, but this does not explain why the unicorn is envisaged as a horse. Furthermore, it should be noted that classical authors seem to have been able to distinguish clearly between rhinoceros and unicorns.

A mutant goat
The connection that is sometimes made with a single-horned goat derives from the vision of Daniel recorded in Book of Daniel 8:5:
:And as I was considering, behold, a he-goat came from the west over the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes. which is soon exchanged for four horns, as a symbol of a great kingdom giving place to four monarchies.

In the domestic goat, a rare deformity of the generative tissues can cause the horns to be joined together; such an animal could be another possible inspiration for the legend. A farmer and a circus owner also produced fake unicorns, remodelling the "horn buttons" of goat kids, in such a way their horns grew deformed and joined in a grotesque seemingly single horn.

The narwhal
Relics ornamented with supposed unicorn horns can be found in museums in Vienna and elsewhere in central Europe. However, these horns are in fact the spiral tusks of an Arctic cetacean known as the narwhal (Monodon monoceros) as Danish zoologist Ole Worm established in 1638. Presumably they were brought to central Europe as a trade item by Vikings or other northern mariners and sold as genuine unicorn horns, passing the various tests intended to spot fake unicorn horns.

The oryx
The oryx is an antelope with two long, thin horns projecting from its forehead. Some have suggested that seen from the side and from a distance, the oryx looks something like a horse with a single horn (although the 'horn' projects backward, not forward as in the classic unicorn). Conceivably, travellers in Arabia could have derived the tale of the unicorn from these animals. However, classical authors seem to distinguish clearly between oryxes and unicorns.

Fiction
Modern fantasy fiction tends to perpetuate the medieval notion of a unicorn as a beast with magical qualities or powers.

Furry fandom

Malkin:

cleanup

The term Furry Fandom (also known as Furrydom/Furridom, Fur Fandom or Furdom) is used to describe both the state of belonging to the group of furry fans -- as in, 'I am part of the furry fandom' -- as well as a group identifier for the people, creative work, and organizations that are described as furry in interest, nature, motivation, or scope.

There has been a great deal of debate within the fandom through the years caused by conflicting definitions of what the furry fandom actually consists of, or what some parties assert it should consist of. These debates have appeared to frequently come about during times when segments of the fandom have experienced upset or internal fragmentation. Partly a result of the occassionally heated debate, a significant number of fans and participators react negatively to using the term Furry Fandom with "spare baggage" attached to it beyond a basic definition of enthusiasm for anthropomorphic art, fiction, and characters. It is often advised that those new to the fandom or who are outside observers should not assume very much when approaching it or using the term "Furry", because it is guaranteed that the fandom and community will mean very different things to different people.

Clarifications
Many people unfamiliar with the fandom (sometimes called mundanes, a tradition common to many fandoms and subcultures) have been known to refer to or see it as a club, fandom of one particular media item such as Walt Disney's animated movie, Robin Hood. This is not actually the case. There is no organized membership to say one "belongs" to the fandom currently, though such an idea has been proposed, half in jest. Additionally, the history of Furry Fandom's formation is complex and eclectic, the result of several trends coming together.

<!--including?-->

In this sense, Furry falls into the most basic definition of a fandom: a group of people with a particular core interest who organize (however loosely) the exchange of discussion and materials related to the subject (anthropomorphic animals) at hand. Other fandoms, such as those surrounding Star Trek, or Anime, have been called arguably more structured and focused than Furry, in fact.

However, Furry remains distinguished from many fandoms that involve art, literature, and media, in that the vast majority of the content which Furry makes its topic is produced by the fans themselves. For many Furry fans, this makes the fandom feel more grass-roots, and personal - it is not dependent on the production of a commercial television show or film, or publication of a particular author for its direction and vitality. This particular trait of Furry is so strong that in some circles, people do not even think of it as a fandom, but in some cases, a lifestyle.

Trends and Future
Furries are generally typified as being male, although there are some females in the fandom.

A question asked by some within Furry, especially by long-time fans is: has the golden age of Furry passed? Furry has experienced its share of internal and external strife and negative publicity, to the point that several anti-furry groups have emerged and long-time personalities and contributers have moved on from the fandom. Many wonder if Generation Y and the iGeneration will experience the same enthusiasm in Furry as the first convention goers, artists, writers, and role-players.

Anthropomorphic characters continue to be popular in mainstream media however, and despite periods of trouble, more people stumble across Furry fandom who become participants. In spite of the predictions of some anti-furry groups (many of which disbanded after only a few years - a relatively short time compared to the history of Furry fandom), the community continues to grow, with Furry Conventions generally increasing in attendance every year and fresh infusions of talent in all areas, from writing to costuming.

Interest in the Furry concept has also spread to more recent trend-setters such as Second Life, which boasts a large Furry fan user demographic. Some fans have joked that when genetic engineering becomes more advanced, then the fandom will really have a fresh motivation. Though it has also been observed that such ideas are not far off from many science-fiction works, some of which pre-date Furry Fandom itself.

Despite the males outnumbering the females, there is still a certain degree of competition and angst among the females. As in any fandom, to a certain degree, there are people who feel the need to top the totem pole of their gender.
Kappa

Malkin: /* Kappa in fiction */

Kappa (&#27827;&#31461;) are mythical creatures, water imps found in Japanese folklore.

Appearance
Most depictions show kappa as child-sized humanoids, though their bodies are often more like those of monkey's or frog's than human being's. Some descriptions say their faces are apelike while others show them with beaked visages more like those of tortoises. Pictures usually show kappa with thick turtle shells and scaly skin that ranges in color from green to yellow or blue.

Kappa inhabit the ponds and rivers of Japan and have various features to aid them in this environment, such as webbed hands and feet. They are sometimes even said to smell like fish, and they can certainly swim like them. The expression kappa no kawa nagare ("a drowning kappa") means that even the experts make mistakes.

The kappa's most notable feature, however, is the water-filled depressions atop their heads. These cavities are surrounded by scraggly hair, and this type of bobbed hair style is named okappa atama for the creatures. The kappa derives their incredible strength from these liquid-filled holes, and anyone confronted with one may exploit this weakness by simply getting the kappa to spill the water from its head. One trusted method to do this is to appeal to the kappa's deep sense of etiquette, for a kappa cannot help but return a deep bow, even if it means losing its head-water in the process. Once depleted, the kappa is seriously weakened and may even die. Other tales say that this water allows kappa to move about on land, and once emptied, the creatures are immobilized. Stubborn children are encouraged to follow the custom of bowing on the grounds that it is a defense against kappa.

Behavior
Kappa are mischievous troublemakers. Their pranks range from the relatively innocent, such as loudly passing gas or looking up women's kimonos, to the more frightening, such as stealing crops, kidnapping children, or raping women. In fact, small children comprise one of the gluttonous kappa's favorite meals, though they will eat adults as well. They feed on these hapless victims by sucking out the entrails (or blood, liver, or "life force", depending on the legend) through the anus. Even today, signs warning about kappa appear by bodies of water in some Japanese towns and villages. Kappa are also said to be afraid of fire, and some villages hold fireworks festivals each year to scare the sprites away.

Kappa are not entirely antagonistic to mankind, however. They are curious of human civilization, and they can understand and speak Japanese. They thus sometimes challenge those they encounter to various tests of skill, such as shogi (a chess-like game popular in Japan) or sumo wrestling. They may even befriend human beings in exchange for gifts and offerings, especially cucumbers, the only food kappa are known to enjoy more than human children. Japanese parents sometimes write the names of their children (or themselves) on cucumbers and toss them into kappa-infested waters in order to mollify the creatures and allow the family to bathe. There is even a kind of cucumber-filled sushi roll named for the kappa, the kappamaki.

Once befriended, kappa have been known to perform any number of tasks for human beings, such as helping farmers irrigate their land. They are also highly knowledgeable of medicine, and legend states that they taught the art of bone setting to mankind. Due to these benevolent aspects, some shrines are dedicated to the worship of particularly helpful kappa. Kappa may also be tricked into helping people. Their deep sense of decorum will not allow them to break an oath, for example, so if a human being can dupe a kappa into promising to help him, the kappa has no choice but to follow through.

Origins
There are several theories for the origins of the kappa in Japanese myth. One possibility is that they developed from an ancient Japanese practice of floating stillborn fetuses down rivers and streams. Another theory is that the kappa were invented to explain the swollen anus common in drowning victims. The name "kappa" may be derived from the term for "robe" used by the Portuguese monks who arrived in Japan in the 16th century; they called this garment a capa, and the monks' appearance is not unlike that of the similarly named Japanese sprites, from the loose, shell-like cloaks to the tonsure|tonsured hair. Some modern commentators even suggest that the kappa may be space aliens, and many of their pranks are similar to those often attributed to UFOs.

Kappa in fiction
Embedded in popular folklore as they are, Kappa are popular figures in modern times on Japanese animation, children's toys, and literature. Modern depictions make them much less monstrous, showing them instead as cute, cartoonish figures.

A notable literary appearance is the short story "Kappa" by Akutagawa Ryunosuke. They also appeared in a more sinister form as the organization of INKlings in Haruki Murakami's Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. The kappa were also the inspiration for the creature in the film Ringu; Kappas have recently been introduced in Western literature, in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The creatures have been featured in the sixth installment of the Final Fantasy series of roleplaying games (though renamed "imps" in the English translation), and were the inspiration for the "Koopas" in the Super Mario Bros. series of video games. Super Mario World goes so far as to name a mountain with its peak filled with water "Kappa Mountain". Two Pokémon, Lombre and Golduck, are undoubtedly based on the imp. InuYasha, Harvest Moon, and Animal Crossing also feature kappa characters.

Western media includes notable appearances of kappa as well. The James Bond novel The Man with the Red Tattoo by Raymond Benson features a Japanese assassin nicknamed "The Kappa", because of his short height.
In the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, the Ninja Turtles tend to be confused with Kappa during their time travels to Japan's feudal era. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them also mention kappa. The children's cartoon Arthur aired an episode in which one character faces a kappa during a fantasy scene.

The Lion King is an animated movie that was released by Disney in 1994. It is popular in the furry community and is considered by some people to be the thing that got them introduced to the fandom. Many participate in The Lion King MUCK.

It is the third movie ever produced by Disney to feature an entirely furry cast of characters, after Bambi and Robin Hood.

The movie was part of a three movie series

* The Lion King, released in 1994
* Simba's Pride or The Lion King 2, release as a direct to video in 1998 in the US.
* The Lion King 1 1/2 (The Lion King 3 in Europe) released as a direct to video in 2004.

There were a few points of controversy having to do with the first movie:

* In one scene, Simba flops down into the grass and stirs up some pollen. The pollen hovers in the air of a moment and appears to make a word in the sky before drifting off. Many people claimed they saw 'SEX' as the word, however Disney claims the word is 'SFX' as in 'Special Effects'. While the scene was not modified in the VHS release of the movie, the DVD release has the word darkened out and hardly visible at all.

* Another controversy has to do with many simularties between a Japanese anime series called Kimba, The White Lion. Originally, The Lion King was to be called King of the Jungle and was to include a white lion as the lead. There are many parallels in characters and story points between the two movies that did make it into the final production. This page goes deeper into the similarities between the two movies, including images of the two. Also, The Lion King has been presented as a reimagining of Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Stage show
The original movie was adapted as a musical stage show which uses a combination of masks, puppetry and models to depict the animal characters. All of the costumes are designed to allow the human actors' faces to be seen as well as their animal personas, creating a deliberate duality. The show has been enormously successful both on Broadway and in London's West End.

During the break he had taken from producing Ninja High School, Ben Dunn created Quagmire USA, a 6-issue mini-series set nine years after the 100th issue of NHS in which Kassy and Lexus first appeared. The series followed Kassie and a new character named Bento on their adventures in Quagmire.

Unfortunately, very quickly after meeting, Kassy and Bento have to go save Ricky Feeple from an alternate dimension. They bring at least two supporting crew with them and travel into the alternate dimension to extract Ricky. The adventures they have in this other world turn bad when they face down a megalomaniac bent on "gooning" the world's population to serve his every whim. Even worse, they return home to find the villain already there and in control of the town, and they have to fight not only for their freedom, but to free the city as well.

By the end of the mini-series, an unplanned reaction from one of the minor characters to the gooning of Kassy, Bento, and the deaths of two of her friends results in the series's universe being destroyed. In a surprise cameo, Ben Dunn himself appears to lend the surviving character his "godlike powers" for a period of one second to recreate the universe as it once was before she destroyed it.

Kassy, Lexus and Asrial make their return appearances in this series and the half-Salusian Kassy is the most prominent in the entire mini-series.
Furry Ninja High School is a parody of the regular Ninja High School. Rather than the normal mostly-human cast, all the characters are represented by their furry equivalants. For example, Jeremy Feeple is protrayed as a squirrel, Asrial is still a Salusian but definately more skunk-like, and so on.

The plot follows the early issues of NHS with a furry twist and less conservative tones. So much is the bar lowered that the two primary female characters both overtly attempt to win Jeremy's heart by being nude in front of him, though in one case it was an accident that resulted in Jeremy being told to help the poor girl wash out the Skunk spray that Asrial had inadvertantly hit her with while using her non-anthro form. Shortly thereafter, Asrial attempts to even the score by being fully naked right in Jeremy's face.

The differences Asrial has between versions is that in the Furry version, she can change at will from anthro to non-anthro. The effect of this is that most of the characters are not aware of who she really is in that state and it helps her sneak around better, although the unfortunate side effect is that some characters would get on her nerves and interfere directly in her affairs, such as when two teenage boys found her wandering the house and picked her up by the tail wondering if she was a boy or girl... the obvious result being an odourous end for the two boys.
