Cóyotl Awards

2020-12-19T23:30:09Z

Makyo: Added 2019 winners

The Cóyotl Awards is an annual award for "excellence in anthropomorphic literature", run by the Furry Writers' Guild since 2012. Winners are announced at a ceremony held during at RainFurrest (2012, 2014, and 2015) until moving to Rocky Mountain Fur Con 2016 because "Our usual location for the awards ceremony is no longer available".

Guidelines
Guild members are eligible to nominate works in four categories (short stories, novellas, novels, and anthologies). Comics and graphic novels may also be eligible, based on word count. Membership in the guild is not required for a work to be nominated. Self-published works are eligible. Members may not nominate work with which they have a monetary, editorial, or domestic interest. The top four works nominated in each category, and any tying with them, are then presented to Guild members for the final vote.

The award is presided over by the Cóyotl Awards Chair, who has the authority to interpret the rules and determine the eligibility of a work, including "questionable works".

The Furry Writers' Guild is a furry writers' association with the aim of bringing writers of all levels of skill and ability together to help improve the quality of furry anthropomorphic fiction. Founded in April 2010 by Sean Silva, the Guild aspires to facilitate community building and information sharing between writers and readers of furry literature alike.

In September 2013, leadership of the guild passed to Sean Rivercritic, who brought in new forums and developed what is intended to be an ongoing anthology of guild-members' work, Tales from the Guild. In May 2014, he announced that he would not compete in the upcoming elections due to personal time constraints. Poetigress subsequently became president of the guild, deploying a new Wordpress-hosted website.

In August of 2017, the Furry Writers' Guild was a Guest of Honor at Furry Migration.

Mission
Lowd]].

Website
At the core of the Guild is its website, which aims to bring together people and resources and organize them into a cohesive whole. It collects useful links and information from throughout the internet and the furry fandom, including various writing resources, articles, distributors and publishers of anthropomorphic related literature, and an up-to-date Furry Writer's Market listing many publishing opportunities throughout the community.

Fur Affinity group
On January 31, 2011, a group was formed on Fur Affinity for Guild members, aspiring members, and other interested parties. Anyone may freely watch the group, and by doing so, automatically receive updates of new publishing venues and other news to their Fur Affinity inbox. Guild members are also authorized to post the Guild icon on their Fur Affinity profile page.

Membership
Although the web site and forums are open to all, full membership in the Guild is only available to writers who have met certain criteria for publication. Associate membership is offered on a case-by-case basis to "specific individuals who have made key contributions in the field of anthropomorphic fiction (such as editors and publishers)".

Eligibility
Membership in the Guild is free, but requires a writer to meet simple publishing criteria. Presently the available options are to either have at least one published entry in a paying venue, or two published works in non-paying venues. In either case, the written work must have anthropomorphic characters or themes. The publication venues themselves do not have to be inside the furry fandom, so long as the published work itself is appropriate.

Benefits
Membership provides access to a members-only section within the forum as well as providing announcements and advertisements for upcoming projects and publications through the website. It also provides recognition to its member authors and offers them a way to use their talents to improve furry fiction for everyone.

Weasyl is a social art gallery website, intended to to serve artists in both the furry fandom and the broader online artistic community. Weasyl is "a social gallery website designed for artists, writers, musicians, and more to share their work with other artists and fans." The project's stated primary goals are to provide a secure and easy-to-use site that grants its users the greatest possible margin of artistic freedom. As of December 2013, Weasyl is home to over 300,000 submissions, and over 38,000 registered user accounts.

History
Serious development on Weasyl (then known as the Fergal Project) began in early September 2011, with the intention of it being a simple gallery site exclusive to the furry art community; however, as development progressed and new features were added, the scope of the project expanded beyond its original intentions.

In October 2011 the project underwent major architectural changes (including a change in programming languages) in order to support a larger userbase and more advanced features. By the end of that month, a demonstration website was made available for users interested in testing the in-progress site. Beginning in January 2012, the codebase underwent yet another refactoring phase coinciding with an upgrade away from its original user interface. The original site staff was also largely formed during this month.

Weasyl LLC was formed in March 2012, becoming the website's operating organization. About three months later, staff launched a two-month long donation drive for site start-up costs, with a target goal of $5000. Donations of $5 or more earned the donor an invite to the beta release. On August 1, the drive came to a close, with over 200 people donating a combined $6015.

In June 2012, Weasyl presented a panel at Anthrocon, where a new user interface was demoed for the audience. The panel met with a positive reception. Weasyl's forums opened July 26, two months ahead of the planned beta launch.

Weasyl was slated to be released into open beta during the summer of 2012; the launch was later moved to "late-September" 2012. On September 30, the site came online, but was taken offline a day later to resolve "obvious issues", remaining offline for a week, before being brought back online.

On February 14th, 2013, in celebration for Valentine's day, Weasyl went into Open Beta mode, meaning an invite is no longer required for account creation.

On March 1st, 2013, Benchilla stepped down as an officer of Weasyl LLC amidst accusations of Weasyl staff sockpuppeting on Fur Affinity's donation drive journal. However, Benchilla has since stated that the accusation is simply a rumour, and to not believe anything without "actual physical evidence." He has since officially relinquished any stock in the LLC as of December 2013, leaving Kihari to be the sole proprietor.

Features
The site boasts a number of features:
* A Collections tool, which "enables a user to have a second gallery of submissions that were made for them, rather than by them." Through this, the intended effect is to reduce the number of duplicate uploads of commissioned, gift or shared-credit works in separate galleries. Followers are notified of collections updates.
* Characters, allowing users to post reference sheets and biographies for their original characters and fursonas. These are considered separate from general "Content" (including art and literary works) and "Journals".
* Streaming Notifications for informing users of when one is broadcasting live video of composition
* Four-Tiered Rating System - "General", "13 and Up", "18 and Up" and "Graphic".
* Folders for user submissions.

Mascot
The mascot of the website is Wesley, an ermine dressed in a beret and vest whose tail is usually tipped in wet paint (as he frequently uses it as a paintbrush). His markings change with the seasons, adorning him with either his summer or winter coat as appropriate. The mascot was originally designed by FayV, who created the character after input from the rest of the staff. Since the character's inception, Wesley has been drawn by many different artists, including staff members Fiz the Ancient and Stereo Plair.

Anthrocon
Anthrocon is the world's largest furry convention, with an attendance of 5179 in 2012. It is held each summer in Pennsylvania.

Background
The convention was founded in 1997 as Albany AnthroCon, itself an offshoot of the Furry Halloween parties held by Aloyen Youngblood; when attendance pushed triple digits, he decided to book a hotel, and organized it as a convention in 1997 with the aid of local friends Points, Rigel and others. In its first year, it had approximately 500 attendees.

In late 1998-9 the chairmanship of the convention was transferred to Dr. Samuel Conway by Points, and they formally organized the group as Anthrocon Inc., renamed the convention simply "Anthrocon", and relocated it to Pennsylvania. Its first venue was the Hilton of Valley Forge, PA (1999 and 2000). Due to rapidly increasing membership numbers it was forced to relocate to the larger Adams Mark Hotel of Philadelphia, PA in 2001- when it became the largest furry convention ever held, with 1,457 attendees.

Attendance continued to grow: by 2004 it was 2,406. Attendance in 2005 dropped slightly to 2,373, due in part to higher parking fees, a different and unfamiliar hotel (the Wyndham Franklin Plaza in downtown Philadelphia), and possibly due to Hurricane Dennis's effect on the southern United States which closed many airports and prevented people from traveling.

Attendance again began to increase in 2006 with the move to Pittsburgh, PA and the David Lawrence Convention Center, reaching 2,489. In 2008 total attendance topped three thousand at 3,390, and in 2010 exceeded four thousand with 4,238 attendees and four official convention hotels. Growth for the convention has historically averaged 14% a year.

Since 1997, the Anthrocon Charity Auction has donated more than $86,000 to animal-related charities.

Security for the convention has been provided by the Dorsai Irregulars since 2002.

Current location and timeslot
Due to the unforeseen sale and closure of the Adam's Mark Hotel in November 2004, Anthrocon chose the Wyndham Franklin Plaza in Philadelphia as the site for its 2005 convention. In 2005, Anthrocon announced that they would be moving to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for the 2006 convention. Because of scheduling conflicts, the convention had to temporarily leave its normal July timeslot and was held June 15-18 in 2006. The 2007 convention was held July 5-8 at the same location.

A 2007 move to Pittsburgh was actually envisioned by Anthrocon's Board of Directors before the sale of the Adam's Mark Hotel took place, due to Anthrocon's increasing attendance. Anthrocon began soliciting people's opinions about moving to Pittsburgh in October 2004. At the time, the convention was already too big for any affordable hotel in Philadelphia, and the Adam's Mark had the most convention space of any hotel of its size in the city before its demolition. The closing of the Adam's Mark simply moved those plans up a year.

While some were opposed to the move, most were supportive of it. Many attendees who supported the move lived so far away from Pennsylvania that the move made little difference to the trip there.

Current leadership
The chairman of the convention, Dr. Samuel Conway (nicknamed "Kagemushi" or "Uncle Kage" among attendees), oversees the operations of the Anthrocon with the help of staff and a number of volunteers who donate their time and energy throughout the weekend to assist the multitude of small tasks which arise.

The choice of Toonseum was made with consultation of the furry community via a LiveJournal post by Rigel. It has so far been the only (fandom-approved) exception to the "animal related" charity rule.

Attendance
Each yeah Anthrocon sees an average 17.3% increase in attendees with a bigger increase of the number of fursuiters in the fursuit parade with an average of 34.6%. Fursuiters typically make up 15-20% of the attendance.

Incorporation and trademarks
Anthrocon, Inc. was incorporated as a non-profit organization on 25 June 1998 and registered as a 501(c)(7) social and recreation club in the state of Pennsylvania (entity 2823650). This classification differs from the 501(c)(3) status of Midwest Furry Fandom and Anthropomorphic Arts and Education - most notably, donations are not tax-deductible to their donors, but in return the company has more flexibility about its operations, and more leeway to restrict access to non-members (in fact, it is expected to, as otherwise it is not a club).

Applications to register the word "Anthrocon" and the 'Anthrocon paw' as US trademarks were filed on 18 September and 12 November 2006, respectively. According to these filings, the word "Anthrocon" was first used on 1 February 1997, while the paw logo was used from 30 June 1998.

Phil Geusz (born 1961) is a furry author, working primarily in the transformation-story sub-genre. He's best known for his work in the The Blind Pig (TBP) storyverse, as well as for his books Transmutation Now!, The First Book of Lapism, Freedom City, Manifest Destiny, Wine of Battle, A Left-Handed Sword, Descent, Resisting Arrest, Spur, the David Birkenhead series, and Corpus Lupus. His TBP story Graduation Day appeared in the landmark anthology Best in Show, edited by Fred Patten; he also wrote the introduction to the transformation story section of this collection. His short stories appear in several mainstream collections. Phil is a notably prolific author-- in 2010 alone he sold five novels to three separate publishers. Three of them, the "No Oath Sworn" trilogy, were sold to a mainstream (non-fandom-related) house. Phil also has numerous other publication credits, served as Writing Guest of Honor at 2007, and has been nominated several times for the Ursa Major Award. His work has appeared many times on the Ursa Major Recommended Anthropomorphics List.

Within the furry world, Phil's fiction is posted almost exclusively through the Transformation Story Archive and Furry-lit Mailing Lists; he's been active on the TSA since approximately 1996.

Phil also founded the annual TSA-Bash, a sort of minicon for TSA-ers that has been held annually at various locations across the nation since 1998.

In late 2012, Phil became a contributor for the furry site, [[Adjective Species|[adjective][species]]], writing under the name Rabbit.

Although Phil does not MUCK, he is known simply as Rabbit on the Anthrochat IRC channel #TheZoo. However, he attends and enjoys many furry-cons primarily in the American midwest and south, as time and budget allow. He can most often be found at Mephit Furmeet, in his home state of Tennessee, which he considers his "home con". He has served as Writing Track Coordinator for numerous cons, and immensely enjoys chairing panels and working with other furry authors at these events. Phil is divorced, and works for a major automobile manufacturer.
