'''First Aid''' is a service that some furry [[convention]]s provide for their members. Many conventions offer qualified people to perform first aid if a convention guest needs it. First aid [[furs]] are generally on duty in shifts, providing 24 hour coverage.

At most conventions, the first aid staff are available to provide first aid (contact [[Con_Ops | ConOps]]) but also carry radios/pagers and will respond to any reported medical issues, to offer their assistance in line with their training and skill levels. Training levels and team sizes vary, with some conventions having multiple Doctors, paramedics and EMTs on staff, with advanced lifesaving skills and equipment, down to volunteers with basic first aid training.

Medical incidents are expected to happen throughout any con (you have several thousand people, all of whom are partying for 12+ hours a day... accidents happen), with staff working in the background treating patients, however occasional incidents occur which provoke a substantial response from medics which gets noticed by attendees, but this is uncommon.

All care is provided as immediate care only, with the expectation that ambulance services or normal GP/family doctor care is sought out for ongoing care.

==Structure==
Various cons structure their departments differently, however the basic layout is:

# Head of Welfare
# Head of Medical
# Deputy Head of Medical
# Medical Team (Consultants, Doctors, Paramedics, EMTs, ECAs and other people with advanced first aid training)
# First Aid Team (People with basic first aid training, able to perform CPR and provide basic care of injuries)

The head of department tends to operate as an on-call senior accountable individual, with the rest of the team operating on a shift pattern, varying between 4,8 and 12 hours a day depending on the convention.

==Equipment==
Equipment varies con to con, most will provide basic first aid equipment, with medics bringing gear to their skill level, types of equipment can include:

* Medical gasses (Entonox and Oxygen)
* Lifesaving drugs
* Defibrillators/ECGs/Monitoring Equipment
* BLS and ALS gear
* Wheelchairs
* Stretchers

Some even set up temporary clinics for treating injuries or illness while awaiting ambulances.

==Liability concerns==
Some states have a legal concept on the books known as "expectation of care". This means that if a convention offers "first aid services", a person who becomes injured and fails to (or is unable to) receive any medical assistance from a convention may be entitled to file a claim against the convention in civil court. While most liability insurance policies have "riders" available to offset this risk, it is expensive, and usually out of the budget of a furry convention. As such, a convention running in a state which has "expectation of care" is unable to provide first aid services.

On January 1, 2008, Zakai met a [[Doberman (species)|doberman]] by the name of Danny Demont (many called him Dobe). Zakai found Danny using the site [[Pounced]] to search for local furries in his area. Originally he wasn't going to message Danny, since his interest were opposite of his own. Danny enjoyed rap, beer, and sports while Zakai was into all other music, didn't drink beer, and didn't enjoy watching sports. But he decided to send Danny a message anyway, that simply said "Happy New Year!" The two talked for quite a bit, engaging in phone calls a day later. On January 5th, when Zakai mentioned he had plans to go on a date, Danny admitted he was starting to like him by simply saying "I kinda dig ya myself". Later that day the two decided to begin dating.

In Febrary 2008, Zakai moved in with Danny and his current college room mate, then a few months later the two of them moved into their own apartment where Danny was able to get his then eight year old Yellow Labardor Retriever and Zakai received his Black Labrador Retriever puppy as a gift. Because the two shared nearly everything, they decided to make a joint FurAffinity account under the name [http://www.furaffinity.net/user/Raidyanddobe/ Raidy and Dobe]

Later, in 2011, Danny would change his fursona to a Pit Bull named Rocky.

Zakai's fur color is usually white, though some artist give him a slightly gray color. He has a slightly larger and fluffier tail then other jackals, with it's tip colored the same shade of blue as his hair. His hair is currently styled in that of a fawks hawk. His fursona also has red eyes (a trait carried over from a previous fursona). Originally, Zakai went by "Raidy" but having three characters of the same name became confusing for most people, so he decided to rename his main fursona to Zakai with the help of his boyfriend, Rocky and Sister, Ikka.

[[Lee Strom]] is one of the furry convention's founding fathers. He says just because it's ''weird'', it's still perfectly normal to the people involved in it. (laughter) convention will have workshops for the furries: [[puppet]]ry, costume making, writing about mythical creatures, and here's one I think ought to be videotaped: a workshop on furry [[anatomy]]. Apparently some furries aren't waiting until the convention starts this weekend to act out their ''inter-species fantasies''. A reporter caught up with Katie Matthew, 20, prancing through the lobby of a hotel dressed as a ''fox''... she was prancing with other adults dressed as goats, tigers, other creatures. Katie likes the fun of dressing up and escaping into her made up animal character, which she calls "Shadow".

'''Fornax''' refers to the fictional five-piece [[ratel]] musical group who are the cornerstone of a number of short stories created by [[Matt J. McCullar]]. ''Fornax'' is also used to refer to the stories featuring the group.

== Concept ==

The world in which Fornax lives is made up of various [[anthropomorphic]] [[animal]] races, each having many of the traits that their real-world counterparts have. Ratels, in general, are considered to be short-tempered and dangerous, a stereotype that Fornax does not live up to for the most part.

When [[Dalmatian]] music producer and engineer [[Trevor Sarnoff]] travelled to the backwater Saunim province for a business conference, he found more than he bargained for.

Visiting a shopping center shortly before the conference started, he heard a beautiful melody being played on a piano. Finding the music store where the sound was coming from, he discovered a beautiful lady ratel behind the keys. This was his first encounter with [[Pink Fornax]]. It was love at first sight.

Eventually, Trevor (who was almost immediately nicknamed "Spotty" by Pink) would meet her family - she was one of five quintuplets, all of whom were named for colours. His first encounter with [[Yellow Fornax]] almost ended in tragedy when he surprised her, thinking she was Pink. His initial interactions with the other Fornax sisters - [[Green Fornax|Green]], [[Blue Fornax|Blue]], and [[Violet Fornax|Violet]] - were much less stressful, despite having to give Violet the [[Wikipedia:Heimlich maneuver|Heimlich maneuver]] when she choked during dinner.

Trevor found out that the sisters were excellent singers (save for Pink, who had been rendered mute due to a childhood accident) and musicians. The sisters, at first, humoured his suggestions that they perform at the closing of the conference; it took pointing out his name as producer of a number of the recordings they had in their home to get them to take the suggestion seriously.

In that first performance, Fornax wowed the audience to a degree Trevor had never seen before, starting them on a journey that would make them their world's most beloved band. Later stories focus on these later years, and the band's relationships with their fans, their crew, and each other, through good times and bad.

McCullar's original ''Fornax'' stories first appeared in [[APA Castlehome]], and were later collected and republished as ''[[Fornax Remix]]''. A revised version - ''Fornax Remix 1.1'' - was released by [[Fauxpaw Publications]] in 2002.

Fauxpaw has since released the ''Fornax'' novellas ''[[Fornax: You Don't Believe]]'', written by McCullar, and ''[[Outtakes From A Recording Studio]]'', written by [[Gary Akins, Jr.]]. Another novella, ''[[Touch The Sound...Feel The Music]]'' by [[Cirrel|Philip Eggerding]], takes place in the "Fornax Universe", but is not specifically focused on Fornax themselves.

Stand-alone short stories have also been published, mostly in [[Fur Visions]], over the years. One story, "I Remember, I Remember", was published in the 1999 [[Mephit Furmeet]] con book. The webcomic started up in early 2005. '''TwilightPhoenix''' is a science fiction/fantasy [[writer]] (or sci-fantasy) who actively writes short stories and engages in web-board based roleplaying. His stories, while not generally [[furry]] in nature, do often include furry characters (sometimes as the central character). These stories are mostly in a universe of his own making, with a few exceptions of either being in a different, original universe, or his two pieces of fanfiction.

He is presently working on a novel titled "Tigerheart" and has two chapters up on his [[Elfwood]] gallery. He also states that this release makes most of his work non-canon.

==Works==

TwilightPhoenix is able to divide his stories into categoies based on the year they were written, though he does not list his works like this. Until recently, this has been limited to three categories: 2004, 2005, and 2006. The first he would label as the "Gamer Style Stories", the second as the "Transistional Period", and the final as the "Present Style", which roughly correlate with the year written. It remains to be seen if 2007 works will he given a new category or be placed in the "Present Style".

Most of what he writes is science fiction, fantasy, or both combined. Twilight's stories generally revolve around action and combat with the climax laying somewhere in a fight or battle. These are almost always written from a third-person omniscient perspective and serious in nature. He has also been described as using a very formal style, which somtimes contrasts with, and even clashes against, some of the character's dialogue, according to some comments. Though he hardly is above writing humor pieces, albeit they are few. They usually tend to be his favorite works, however.

Presently, Twilight is working on rewriting his work from the "Gamer Style Stories" and "Transitional Period" categories, though he admits he isn't even changing the plot in them at all, just how they are written. He claims that this is due to the fact that most of them, if not all, are no longer canon within his universe. He also adds that if he were to change the plot enough to make it good in his eyes, he might as well write a new story.
