LAFFur: /* Nominations */

{{proposed}}
Here we determine which articles are featured on [[WikiFur:Featured articles]], and on the front page. '''A featured article should exemplify WikiFur's very best work.''' See [[Wikipedia:What is a featured article|what is a featured article]] for criteria.

Once [[Wikipedia:Consensus|consensus]] has been reached about a particular topic, place a summary of it it in the next available slot, and update the featured article pages to reflect this. For an article that is particularly significant on a certain day, such as a radio broadcast, it may be suitable to postpone it to a later date.

__TOC__
== Procedure ==

=== Adding nominations ===
#'''Check the [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:What is a featured article|featured article criteria]]''' and make sure the article meets ''all'' of them before nominating.
#*WikiFur is not as big as Wikipedia, therefore it may be appropriate to nominate articles that are lacking in one or more areas. You should still try to remedy this to the best of your ability before nominating it.
#Place <tt><nowiki>{{FAC}}</nowiki></tt> on the talk page of the nominated article.
#From there, click on the "leave comments" link.
#''(If you are resubmitting an article)'' Use the '''Move''' button to rename the previous nomination to an archive. For example, [[WikiFur:Featured article candidates/Television]] &rarr; [[WikiFur:Featured article candidates/Television/archive1]]
#Place <tt><nowiki>===[[name of nominated article]]===</nowiki></tt> at the top.
#Below it, write your reason for nominating the article.
#Finally, place <tt><nowiki>{{WikiFur:Featured article candidates/name of nominated article}}</nowiki></tt> at the top of the list of nominees on this page by first copying the above, clicking "edit" on the top of the page, and then pasting, making sure to add the name of the nominated article.

=== Supporting and objecting ===

Please read nominated articles fully before deciding to support or oppose a nomination.
* To edit nominations in order to comment on them, you must click the "edit" link to the right of the article nomination on which you wish to comment (not the overall page's "edit this page" link).
* If you approve of an article, write <nowiki>'''Support'''</nowiki> followed by your reasons.
* If you oppose a nomination, write <nowiki>'''Object'''</nowiki> followed by the reason for your objection. Each objection must provide '''a specific rationale that can be addressed'''. If nothing can be done in principle to "fix" the source of the objection, the objection may be ignored.
** To withdraw an objection, strike it out (with <tt><nowiki><s>...</s></nowiki></tt>) rather than removing it.

Consensus must be reached in order to be promoted to featured article status. This will probably involve some changes to the article based on feedback. Before objecting, consider just changing the article yourself so you don't have to.

=== Writing a good summary ===

Once an article has been selected, it should be summarised in a way that encourages readers to read more about the topic. Ideally, the first paragraph of a featured article is already a [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Lead section|lead section]], but if it is not you may need to adjust the article. You '''should''' merge these sorts of refactoring changes back to the original.

Once this is done, pick and choose sections of the lead to be placed in the featured text. You may also decide to include the lead portions of further sections within the article, or to synthesise your own summary of them. Try to include plenty of links within the summary so that readers have an easy time reading about related topics too.

The final touch is the picture. This should usually be right-aligned and sized to anywhere between 100px to 150px, depending on the shape of the image. Don't forget to turn the text of the article name into a '''bolded''' link to the article, otherwise people won't be able to read more about the topic.

=== Featuring an article ===
Once the summary is written, you should feature the article:

#Place the summary on the appropriate page - e.g. <tt><nowiki>[[WikiFur:This week's featured article/</nowiki>Week {{CURRENTWEEK}}, {{CURRENTYEAR}}]]</tt>
#Change the template on the article's talk page from <tt><nowiki>{{FAC}}</nowiki></tt> to <tt><nowiki>{{featured}}</nowiki></tt>
#Add <tt><nowiki>{{featured article}}</nowiki></tt> to the very bottom of the article itself (''after'' categories)
#Make a note of the featured article in the [[WikiFur:Featured articles#{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}}|appropriate section]] of the Featured articles page
#Add <tt><nowiki>{{WikiFur:This week's featured article/</nowiki>Week {{CURRENTWEEK}}, {{CURRENTYEAR}}}}</tt> to the top of the [[WikiFur:Featured articles/Complete|complete list of featured articles]]
#Click the header of the month name on that page to bring up the featured article log for that month, and move the nomination discussion template from below to the top of that page.

Organized originally by [[User:AshMCairo|"The Reverend" Ash Maurice Cairo]], the bowling meet has been around since early 2004, the first meet only having 4 attendees. Since then, chairmanship of the event has been taken over by [[Shale Ari]], attendance has skyrocketed to an average of 85 each month, numbers having reached over 100. The evening begins with a welcoming dinner at a local [[Wikipedia:Buona Beef|Buona Beef]]. Traditionally, bowling is held at [http://www.foxbowl.com Fox Bowl] in [[Wikipedia:Glen Ellyn, IL|Glen Ellyn, IL]], but other venues have hosted the event which hosts typically upward to 85 furs. In recent months, due to several issues between LAFF and Fox Bowl's management, LAFF bowling has shifted temporarily to [http://www.bowlbrunswick.com/center_info?centerId=3850 a local Brunswick Zone] in [[Wikipedia:Glendale Heights, IL|Glendale Heights, IL]]. Thanks to cooperation with staff, [[fursuiter]]s are welcome to suit up and bowl in [[fursuits]]. A [[headless lounge]] is provided by both alleys free of charge. In the background, [[artist]]s set up supplies on the tables and begin drawing, often offering free sketches to friends or those interested. After the first round, Fox Bowl often turns off the lights to begin Cosmic Bowling, where blacklights illuminate balls, pins and even fursuits. The event usually lasts 2 or 3 games before the afterparties begin. Popular venues have been [[Wikipedia:Denny's|Denny's]], [[Wikipedia:Steak and Shake|Steak and Shake]] and [[Wikipedia:White Castle|White Castle]], home of [[SliderCon]]. Since moving to the Brunswick location, bowling went into decline, due to waning interest in the event and the new location. Attendance had been rapidly falling as a result. However, in January 2007, the introduction of an air hockey tournament combined with some basic solutions to the problems at hand and bowling has become no longer in danger of fading away.

[[Image:Laffbowling.jpg|right|thumb|200px|[[LAFF]] furs bowling]]
Every third Saturday of the month, [[Lake Area Furry Friends]] holds its monthly '''LAFF Bowling''' meet. Once food and drinks are had, Shale begins the task of shepherding furs towards their vehicles to head to the bowling alley. Thanks to cooperation with staff, fursuiters are welcome to suit up and bowl in [[fursuits]].
'''SliderCon''' is a monthly trip started and organized monthly by [[Sema JayHawk]] to [[Wikipedia:White Castle|White Castle]] that usually follows [[Lake Area Furry Friends]] [[LAFF Bowling|bowling]] events.

SliderCon is not exclusive to the LAFF group. There is always one held during [[Midwest Furfest]] and everyone, even non-LAFFurs, is welcome to attend.

== History ==
SliderCon started in March of 2005 when the [[Wikipedia:Denny's|Denny's]] that the LAFF Group would usually go to after bowling told them they would have to wait two hours just to get a table. Sema decided that she didn't want to wait and went to White Castle instead.

In the following months, SliderCon gained popularity as the "After Bowling Event" and to this day is one of a few choices for post-bowling entertainment. In Spring 2007, SliderCon celebrates its two year anniversary, making it the longest running after-bowling event.

[[Image:Board.jpg|left|thumb|175px|SliderCon on Second Life]]
== Virtual SliderCon ==
In late December of 2006, Sema decided to recreate SliderCon on [[Second Life]]. Being the founder of both SliderCon and the Second Life LAFF group, she decided that this place would be LAFF's official Second Life headquarters.

The Second Life's SliderCon currently sits on a 1024sm plot of land in the sim of Osondoson and doubles as Sema's Second Life home. The castle is still under construction, but in the future, users will be able to buy bags of [[Wikipedia:White Castle|Slyder]]s, Crave Cases and Crave Crates.

[[Image:LAFFLogo.jpg|right|175px]]
'''Lake Area Furry Friends''' (also known as '''LAFF''') is a regional social group and [[:category:mailing lists|mailing list]] focused on the northern [[Wikipedia:Illinois|Illinois]], southern [[Wikipedia:Wisconsin|Wisconsin]], and northwestern [[Wikipedia:Indiana|Indiana]], including the [[Wikipedia:Chicagoland|Chicago]], Milwaukee, and Madison metropolitan areas.

==History==
LAFF came into being in 1996 as a more regionally-oriented [[Wikipedia:mailing list|mailing list]] than its predecessor, the ChiFur mailing list, which was focused around Chicago. It has since become the dominant [[furry]] group in the region and has branched off into cyberspace to [[LiveJournal]] and [[MySpace]] communities, moderated by [[Artemis]] and [[User:AshMCairo|Ash M. Cairo]] respectively, to the [[Second Life]] group, founded by [[Sema JayHawk]] and helped moderated by [[Blazger]] and [[Steel the Warrior]]. Its main website was created in 1998 by [[Aureth]] on his [[Cornwuff Press]] site. Artemis took over as webmaster in 1999; he revamped and ran the site on [[Catbox|catbox.com]] until 2007 when, under the direction of Ash M. Cairo, [[Ken Redtail]] and [[Laff:User:Infinity Squared|Zel]], a new website was created using a wiki format.

==The present==
Currently, the community is based around the "LAFF mailing list," which is hosted at catbox.com by [[Puma (person)|puma]]. The mailing list is primarily used to organize social functions, including a monthly [[LAFF Bowling|bowling]] outing (organized by [[Shale Ari]]), which features karaoke and followed by multiple after-bowling parties, including [[SliderCon]] (organized by [[Sema JayHawk]]), as well as monthly softball games in the summer (organized by [[Stevie Maxwell]]), and the annual trip to Noah's Ark Water Park in the Wisconsin Dells (organized by [[laff:Hakeber|Hakeber]]). The year culminates in a grand [[LAFF New Years Eve|New Years Eve party]] in Northern Illinois. In past years, that's been organized by [[Linnaeus]] but in 2006, the party was hosted by [[Riley West Wolf]] with the help of several other furs. Numerous weekly events also take place, as well as one-off outings organized by community members. Many members of LAFF also volunteer their time for [[Midwest FurFest]] as staff members, gophers, or support their hometown convention by being a sponsor.
